OPENING LETTER

It feels like well over a year since last year’s annual gathering of our industry in Las Vegas for the BCA Expo. Weeks have felt like months in our dynamic economic environment. Yet, as always, our industry has prevailed and is prepared to look ahead and identify ways to better serve billiard customers while growing our businesses and the game.

Tariffs one day, no tariffs the next. Inflation is high, yet the market continues to perform well. Unemployment is low, but so is consumer confidence. The tea leaves are all over the place, and billiard professionals with decades of experience report confronting challenges they have never faced before. As you all know, adaptability has once again proven to be an asset in our storied industry.

At BCA HQ, we have adjusted course slightly to better serve you in this rapidly evolving environment. We have made a new, concerted effort to monitor legislative initiatives that have the potential to impact our bottom lines. I attended an advocacy session in Washington, D.C., in June and met with legislators from across the country to promote our industry’s impact on American manufacturing and to highlight the negative effects that tariffs on countries like China and Brazil have on our membership. We will continue to collaborate with our partners at Amusement and Entertainment, along with all our stakeholders, to promote legislation that results in positive economic outcomes for our businesses.

Our industry’s strength and staying power are on full display at the 2026 BCA Expo. We are looking forward to a record-breaking event with numerous first-time exhibitors offering an array of new and groundbreaking billiard products. Expo 2026 features four Innovative Product of the Year categories, with awards presented for pioneering items introduced in 2026.

We are also exceedingly thankful for our many BCA family members who have been in the industry for decades – and in a few cases, more than a century. These pedigreed companies provide the foundation for our industry and sport by offering products of the highest quality that have stood the test of time and play. As always, our flagship members will be on full display at this year’s BCA Expo.

Thank you for attending this year’s BCA Expo. We are confident that your trip will be productive and serve your business well. Please take the time to share your thoughts about your experience. We are committed to learning how we can better serve you.

Thank you very much for supporting our industry.

FROM THE COUNTER TO THE CAMERA

A look at how social media is becoming a sales tool for billiards retailers and why the BCA Expo matters more than ever

For decades, the business of selling billiard equipment has been built on trust, expertise and personal relationships. Customers walk into specialty stores to get fitted for a cue, ask about table brands or debate tips and shafts with

people who know the game inside and out. That foundation hasn’t changed, but the way those conversations start has.

Today, more of them begin on a smartphone or computer.

As billiard retailers prepare for the BCA Expo, social media is no longer just a branding exercise or a way to share tournament photos. It has become a practical sales tool, one that influences purchasing decisions long be-

fore a customer ever steps into a store or picks up the phone.

THE MODERN SHOWROOM IS DIGITAL FIRST

For many consumers, especially younger players and first-time buyers, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and TikTok have replaced the showroom as the first point of contact. A cue, case or table is often discovered through a short video or post – not a catalog or ad.

Retailers who understand this shift are using social platforms to extend their expertise beyond the counter. Instead of waiting for customers to ask questions in person, they answer them publicly:

• What’s the difference between shafts?

• Why do tips feel different?

• How does table cloth choice affect play?

• What should a beginner invest in first?

By turning common in-store conversations into digital content, retailers position themselves as trusted advisors before a sale even begins.

WHY SOCIAL MEDIA WORKS

Billiard retail has a unique advantage in the social media landscape: products that are tactile, visual and tied to personal performance. Unlike many retail categories, billiards equipment benefits from explanation and demonstration.

A short video showing the sound difference between tips; a side-by-side comparison of shafts; a close-up of cue construction; or a table installation in progress can do more to justify price and quality than any spec sheet. Social media allows retailers to show why a product costs what it does – a critical factor in an industry where education often drives purchasing decisions.

One of the biggest mistakes retailers make on social media is using it solely as a digital flyer – posting product photos, pricing and promotions without context. While these posts have their place, they rarely build longterm engagement.

More effective retailers are diversifying their content and including things such as educational posts that explain equipment differences; behind-the-scenes content from the shop floor; staff expertise featured through quick tips and Q&As; customer stories highlighting upgrades or first tables; and event coverage from tournaments and trade shows.

This mix keeps feeds fresh while reinforcing the retailer’s role as a knowledge hub, not just a place to transact.

RISE OF SHORTFORM VIDEO

Short-form video has transformed how retailers communicate value. Instead of telling customers a product is better, retailers can show it.

A 15-second clip demonstrating cue balance, tip response or cloth speed can spark questions that lead directly to sales. These videos don’t need high production values. In fact, content filmed at the counter or in the warehouse often performs best because it feels authentic.

For retailers attending the BCA Expo, this format is especially relevant. Many of the products on display – new cue technology, accessories, table designs –lend themselves naturally to quick, visual explanations that can later be shared with customers.

SOCIAL MEDIA AS A RELATIONSHIP TOOL

Billiard retail has always been relationship-driven, and social media amplifies that dynamic rather than replacing it. Platforms allow retailers to stay connected with customers between purchases, leagues and events.

Retailers are using social channels to announce new inventory arrivals; answer questions in comments and DMs; highlight repeat customers and league players and share maintenance reminders and care tips.

These touchpoints keep retailers topof-mind, even when customers aren’t actively shopping.

Social media has also changed the relationship between manufacturers and retailers. Product launches are no longer confined to press releases or catalogs; they unfold across multiple platforms, often driven by video.

Retailers play a critical role in this ecosystem. Their hands-on demonstrations provide credibility that manufacturer-produced content sometimes lacks. Customers trust retailers to give real-world feedback – what sells, what lasts and what fits different playing styles.

At the BCA Expo, this dynamic becomes visible on the show floor, where retailers gather information not just to stock shelves, but to tell better stories once they return home.

USING THE BCA EXPO AS A DIGITAL ASSET

For retailers, the BCA Expo isn’t just an opportunity to see products, it’s a chance to create content that fuels months of social engagement.

Savvy attendees plan ahead by filming short clips of new products at booths; capturing conversations with manufacturers; sharing first impressions of

equipment and posting behind-thescenes moments from the show.

This content signals expertise and industry involvement to customers back home. It also reinforces the idea that the retailer is actively investing in staying current, which is a powerful differentiator in a competitive retail environment.

EDUCATION AT THE CENTER OF RETAIL SUCCESS

One reason social media resonates so strongly with billiard retail is that education has always been the industry’s currency. The most successful retailers are teachers as much as sellers.

Social platforms simply scale that role. A tip explained once at the counter can now be shared hundreds or thousands of times. The BCA Expo, with its emphasis on professional development and industry standards, reinforces this mindset.

Retailers who leave the Expo with both product knowledge and a plan for communicating that knowledge online are better-positioned to compete, not just locally, but digitally.

MEASURING ROI

Retailers don’t need sophisticated analytics to know whether social media is working. The most meaningful indicators are often the simplest: things such as customers referencing posts in-store, increased inquiries about featured products, website traffic following major posts and DMs leading to purchases or fittings.

Social media’s value lies in shortening the sales cycle and warming up conversations before they happen in person. When customers arrive informed, confident, and curious, everyone wins.

LOOKING AHEAD

As the sport continues to attract new players and evolve alongside broader entertainment trends, billiard retailers will play a central role in shaping how the sport is experienced. Social media is now part of that responsibility.

The retailers who succeed will be those who embrace education over promotion, use video to show expertise, build community, not just followers, and treat digital platforms as extensions of their stores.

The BCA Expo remains a critical gathering place for these conversations as it’s a place where retailers can compare notes, learn from one another and return home better-equipped to navigate a changing marketplace.

For those attending this March, the takeaway is clear: the future of billiard retail isn’t just about what’s on the shelf. It’s about how that story is told –both in the store and on the screen.

BCA Names JEFFREY DOLEZAL as the 2025 President’s Award Winner

When the Billiard Congress of America announced that Jeffrey Dolezal would receive this year’s President’s Award, it marked a rare moment of personal recognition for a man who has spent decades deflecting attention away from himself.

“It’s funny because I never do things for personal recognition,” Dolezal said. “I just do things to get them done.”

For nearly 20 years, Dolezal has been the driving force behind the National Wheelchair Poolplayers Association (NWPA), building tournament structures, securing partnerships, mentoring players and, when necessary, quietly filling financial gaps out of his own pocket. The award, he insists, is not about him.

“I guess this award is a recognition of all these years of efforts to improve the quality of life of others through provid-

ing opportunities in the cue sports,” he said. “Still, I was shocked.”

Jacklyn Ady, board chairperson of the BCA, will present Dolezal with the award at the upcoming BCA General Membership Meeting.

“Jeff was an obvious choice for the President’s Award,” she said. “I have been seeing him assist and play at BCA events since my election to the board. Once I learned about his contributions to cue sports and promotion of the game, there was no doubt that Jeffrey Dolezal represents the values inherent in our most distinguished award. His selflessness, integrity and commitment to advancing cue sports as a rehabilitative, community building exercise is admirable. The results of Jeff’s efforts are visible at pool rooms and competitive events every day.”

A BASEMENT TABLE AND A JOYRIDE

Dolezal’s love affair with billiards began long before leadership titles and international medals. He was 12 when his parents installed “a small, cheap pool table” in the basement.

“I remember the table was severely warped to one side,” he said. “Any ball shot toward one of the corners would drain into the pocket if you hit it anywhere in the vicinity.”

Still, he played constantly – in basements, at bowling alleys, at recreation centers and later at a rectory where a friend’s father kept a table. In high school in the late 1970s, he hustled a few dol-

lars at a video game parlor to fund cigarettes and quarter arcade games. The rules were simple and unforgiving.

“Playing a safety was tantamount to a sin – a definite no-no,” he said.

After high school, Dolezal entered the military. The sport followed him there, too, playing in enlisted clubs and day rooms, sharpening his confidence and feeding his competitive streak. Then, on April 20, 1980, everything changed. A motorcycle accident left him a high-level paraplegic.

During rehabilitation at a VA medical center in Milwaukee, Dolezal feared one loss more than most.

“One of the things I regretted…was I thought I’d never play pool again,” he said.

That changed the day he watched two wheelchair users playing 8-ball in a hospital dayroom.

“I was fascinated,” he said. “They played better than I did when I was standing up. I thought, maybe I can play pool again.”

REDISCOVERY AND DRIVE

Back home in Nebraska, pool became more than recreation. It was social outlet, ego boost and quiet therapy. He battled his brothers and local bar players, gradually reclaiming his competitive identity.

Years later, after a move to Washington, D.C., and a pause to focus on career

and family, a business trip reignited the spark. With time to kill, he entered a local tournament using a house cue and nearly won.

“I thought, wow, I want to start playing this again,” he said.

Soon after, he saw an advertisement for a national wheelchair championship in Cleveland. Confident from beating local able-bodied players, he went expecting to dominate. Instead, he met Ken “Rolling Shark” Miller, then ranked at the top nationally. Dolezal jumped out to a 6–1 lead before Miller diagnosed his fatal flaw: no defense.

“In Nebraska you didn’t play safe,” Dolezal said. “You had to always go offensive.”

Miller began hiding the cue ball, forcing three fouls and winning 7–6.

“He said, ‘Man, you can bank everything, but you need to learn how to play defense.’”

That loss changed everything. Dolezal bought a 9-foot table, tore out a wood-burning stove to install it in his living room and replaced carpet with hardwood floors so he could maneuver freely.

He studied relentlessly, reading books, entering leagues, regional tours and pro events. He trained under master instructor Fran Crimi in New York and became a recognized PBIA instructor, not for profit but to help other wheelchair players improve.

“I don’t do it for monetary gain,” he said. “I do it to help players get better.”

The effort paid off. In 2003, he finished second overall in NWPA rankings and captured his first championship title. He would go on to represent the U.S. internationally, including a bronze medal finish at a world-level event last year.

“I was excited,” he said. “I was right up there with those guys.”

A MISSION LARGER THAN A CUE

Dolezal’s competitive ascent coincided with a deeper calling. After a 20year career with Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), where he helped veterans secure benefits, he carried that service mindset into billiards.

“When I was injured first, there was someone there to help me,” he said. “The mission was to help others.”

In 2006, following a leadership transition, he stepped up as NWPA president. A year later, PVA hired him as a consultant to create an enhanced national tour structure.

The PVA/NWPA series, fully funded by PVA and sanctioned by NWPA, became the backbone of adaptive cue sports in the United States. The NWPA itself operates on shoestring resources.

“We literally have like $2,000 in the bank,” Dolezal said. “We have no paid employees. It’s all volunteer.”

Board members pay their own travel. Organizers sometimes cover shortfalls themselves. Sponsorship ebbs and flows. After the 2008 economic crash, a $1,000-per-month administrative stipend from the BCA disappeared, tightening finances further.

Yet tournaments continue. His Richmond, Virginia event, entering its 20th year (excluding COVID), boasts a $7,000 prize pool, raised locally through nonprofit partnerships.

“It costs people a lot of money to come,” he said. “Even if they win the tournament, they’re probably not going to come out ahead.”

So the focus remains on player experience – quality venues, shirts, cues, meals, sometimes travel assistance.

“I’m not trying to build coffers for the NWPA,” he said. “What I’m trying to do is provide a quality playing experience for the players.”

OPENING DOORS WORLDWIDE

The impact is now visible globally. Four Americans recently traveled independently to compete in Europe –something unheard of years ago.

Bret Clifton returned with two bronzes; Andrew Blood captured an international title; Hydred Goldberg, now a two-time world champion, competes internationally and is sponsored by Predator.

“I think our efforts have allowed these people to collaborate and identify each other,” Dolezal said.

Dolezal now serves on the national federation board representing wheelchair athletes and advocating for player-focused models, under the BCA umbrella.

“They need to remain player focused,” he said. “How do we make this an improved player experience?”

For Dolezal, wheelchair billiards is not just competition, it is rehabilitation, reintegration and confidence.

“Getting people out into the community, giving them confidence to be in public, is part of their rehabilitation process,” he said. “That’s what it’s all about – improving the quality of life for others.”

He also was instrumental in bringing the world championships for wheelchair players in 2009 and helped put countless events together for wheelchair players on ESPN.

From a warped basement table to international podiums and national leadership, his journey traces resilience and service. The President’s Award may carry his name, but the legacy belongs to the community he built.

“Hopefully this award is going to try to bring more recognition and more opportunities for wheelchair players,” he said. “I also want to focus on getting cue sports into the Olympics and Paralympics.”

MAKING THE MOST OF THE BCA EXPO: A Guide to Turning Floor Time into Real Value

For billiard retailers, the BCA Expo isn’t just another trade show on the calendar – it’s one of the few moments each year when the entire home recreation and leisure supply chain comes together under one roof.

Manufacturers, distributors, table builders, accessory suppliers, technology providers and service partners are all in the same place, having the same conversations, reacting to the same market realities. What retailers choose to do with that access often determines whether the show becomes a genuine business accelerator.

That usually comes down to intent. Retailers who treat the Expo as a strategic working session – rather than a casual walk through the exhibit hall – tend to leave with clearer buying plans, stronger supplier relationships and a better sense of where the industry is headed. Those who don’t often leave overwhelmed, underprepared and unsure how to turn what they saw into action once they’re back home.

With margins tight, competition evolving and consumer expectations continuing to shift, the BCA Expo represents a rare opportunity for home leisure retailers to step back from day-to-day operations and focus on the bigger picture. Making the most of it requires planning before the doors open, discipline while navigating the floor, and follow-through long after the booths are dismantled.

ARRIVING WITH PURPOSE

The most successful retailers arrive in Las Vegas already knowing what they want out of the show. That doesn’t mean every minute is rigidly scheduled, but it does mean having a clear sense of priorities. For some retailers, the Expo is primarily about sourcing – evaluating new tables, cues, cloth, lighting or accessories to refresh assortments or fill gaps. For others, it’s about strengthening existing supplier relation-

ships, renegotiating terms or understanding where key partners are headed in the coming year.

Still others attend with a broader lens, using the show to assess trends in home recreation, hospitality-driven installations, or technology that could reshape how billiard products are sold and serviced.

Retailers who try to do everything often end up doing very little well. The Expo rewards focus. Walking in with two or three clearly defined objectives makes it far easier to decide which conversations deserve time and which can wait. It also helps retailers avoid one of the most common pitfalls of the show: being pulled from booth to booth by novelty, rather than guided by business needs.

NAVIGATING THE FLOOR WITH DISCIPLINE

Once the exhibit hall opens, time becomes the most valuable currency. The BCA Expo floor not only has something for everyone, but it’s also dense with information. Every booth represents a potential product line, partnership or idea that could affect a retailer’s business for years. That density makes it easy to lose hours without realizing it.

Experienced retailers approach the floor methodically. They prioritize meetings with core suppliers early in the day, when conversations are less rushed and attention is sharper. They make a point to seek out newer exhibitors or companies they haven’t worked with before, knowing that innovation often comes from the edges of the category rather than its center. They also leave room for discovery, recognizing that some of the most valuable insights come from unexpected conversations.

What they avoid is wandering without purpose. Browsing

has its place, but retailers who rely solely on serendipity often leave with plenty of impressions and very few decisions. Treating the floor as a working environment – one where questions are asked, comparisons are made, and notes are taken – keeps the focus where it belongs.

EVALUATING PRODUCTS THROUGH A RETAIL LENS

One of the greatest advantages of the BCA Expo is the ability to evaluate products side by side. For billiard retailers, this is especially important, as many purchases represent significant investments for customers and long-term commitments for the store.

Smart retailers look beyond surface-level features. They ask how a table holds up over time, how easy it is to install and service, and what kind of support exists if something goes wrong. They pay attention to supply chain reliability, lead times and replacement parts availability – factors that directly affect customer satisfaction and cash flow. They also consider how products fit within their existing assortments, both in terms of price point and customer profile.

Just as important is understanding how suppliers support retail success beyond the product itself. Merchandising materials, training resources, warranty policies and marketing support all matter.

The Expo provides a rare opportunity to discuss these topics face to face, in an environment where both sides are focused on long-term partnership rather than transactional sales.

STRENGTHENING SUPPLIER RELATIONSHIPS

For many billiard retailers, the most valuable conversations at the Expo happen with companies they already do business with. Face-to-face meetings allow for a level of candor that’s difficult to achieve through email or phone calls. Retailers can discuss what’s working, what isn’t, and where adjustments might be needed.

These conversations often go beyond product. Retailers can gain insight into a supplier’s broader strategy – where they’re investing, which categories they see growing and how they plan to support dealers in an increasingly competitive landscape. Understanding a supplier’s direction helps retailers make better long-term decisions, particularly when it comes to committing floor space or inventory dollars.

The Expo also provides a chance to humanize relationships. Meeting the people behind the brand – the engineers, sales managers and executives – builds trust and context. When challenges inevitably arise during the year, those relationships can make a meaningful difference in how quickly and effectively issues are resolved.

LEARNING FROM THE INDUSTRY AT LARGE

While the exhibit hall is the centerpiece of the BCA Expo, the surrounding education and networking opportunities offer additional value for retailers willing to engage. Industry sessions often provide insight into broader trends affecting billiard retail, from shifts in consumer behavior to changes in how entertainment spaces are designed and monetized.

For retailers, these sessions can spark ideas that extend beyond immediate buying decisions. Hearing how peers are driving traffic, increasing attachment sales, or adapting to new customer expectations can be just as valuable as discovering a new product line. Even when sessions aren’t directly focused on billiards, they can offer transferable lessons about retail strategy, operations, and customer engagement.

SEEING BEYOND TRADITIONAL RETAIL

One of the most important roles the BCA Expo plays is exposing retailers to how billiards fits into a broader entertainment and recreation ecosystem. The lines between traditional billiard retail, home recreation, and hospitality-focused installations continue to blur, and the Expo reflects that reality.

Retailers who pay attention to these overlaps often gain an early look at emerging opportunities. Products designed for mixed-use spaces, technology that simplifies operation and maintenance, or designs that appeal to younger or more casual players can all signal where future demand may lie. Even retailers who remain firmly rooted in traditional billiards benefit from understanding these shifts, as they influence consumer expectations across the board.

MANAGING ENERGY AND INFORMATION

Trade shows are mentally and physically demanding, and the BCA Expo is no exception. Long days on the floor, constant conversation and the sensory overload of the exhibit hall

can quickly lead to diminishing returns. Retailers who pace themselves tend to extract far more value than those who try to push nonstop.

Taking time to step away from the floor, review notes and reflect on what’s been seen helps prevent information from blending together. Many seasoned attendees make it a habit to recap each day, identifying key takeaways and questions that need follow-up. This simple practice turns impressions into insights and ensures that important details aren’t lost amid the noise.

TURNING CONVERSATIONS INTO ACTION

The real work of the BCA Expo begins once retailers return home. Following up promptly with suppliers and contacts keeps momentum alive and signals professionalism. Referencing specific conversations, asking targeted questions, and outlining next steps all help move relationships forward.

Just as important is internal follow-through. Sharing insights with staff, evaluating potential changes to assortments or strategy, and deciding which opportunities merit investment ensures that the time and expense of attending the Expo translate into tangible results.

Retailers who skip this step often feel disappointed weeks later, unsure what they actually gained from the show. Those who approach follow-up with the same discipline they brought to the floor typically see clear returns.

A STRATEGIC OPPORTUNITY, NOT A BREAK FROM ROUTINE

For billiard retailers, the BCA Expo is best viewed not as an interruption to regular business, but as an extension of it – a concentrated period of learning, relationship building, and strategic planning.

Approached thoughtfully, it offers a chance to sharpen buying decisions, deepen partnerships, and gain perspective that’s difficult to achieve while managing a store day to day.

Las Vegas provides the backdrop, but the real value of the Expo lies in what retailers bring back with them: clearer direction, stronger connections, and renewed confidence in how to navigate a changing marketplace. When treated with purpose and professionalism, the BCA Expo becomes more than a trade show. It becomes a competitive advantage.

Family and Community: THE POOL TABLES PLUS STORY

Ever since Maria and Greg Trent became the owners of Pool Tables Plus, they have established themselves as pillars of the billiard industry, building strong relationships with their partners and supporting fellow members of the home recreation community.

They have been the proud stewards of Pool Tables Plus in Daytona Beach, Florida, for 25 years. But when Maria first started working in the store, she was still enjoying her career as a registered nurse and had no idea that billiards and home recreation would become her long-term profession.

“I never thought I would give up nursing. I definitely thought it was going

to be temporary,” she says. “Then we bought the business, and it became a career change. Even for the first few years, I thought I would return to nursing, but I never did. I fell in love with it. I fell in love with building those relationships and the design of a game room. It’s a fun business to be in.”

CONTINUING A PROUD HISTORY

The Trents are the owners of Beyer & Brown, the parent company of Pool Tables Plus. Beyer & Brown’s long legacy dates back to the 1920s, when it began primarily as a commercial recreation

business. Greg started working for the company while he was still in high school.

“That’s where the journey starts,” Maria says. “When I met him, he was a manager of Beyer & Brown, and the retail operation was tiny, with probably just eight pool tables on display. It was still called Beyer & Brown then; it didn’t have the Pool Tables Plus name yet.”

In 2000, a longtime Beyer & Brown employee who worked as the company’s secretary and in sales retired. It was only natural for Maria to help out –temporarily, of course – mainly by answering the phones. She had a practical reason for joining her husband, even if that expectation didn’t quite pan out.

“I thought I was going to get banker’s hours, to be honest,” Maria says with a laugh. “I was working as a nurse and we had kids, so I thought, ‘Awesome, OK.’ But as you know, that’s not how small businesses work. I dove in and started helping him in the showroom right before we purchased it.”

She quickly discovered she loved the business. The couple, who had been married for about a year at the time, decided to buy it.

“When we signed the contract, I remember being in the elevator afterward thinking, ‘What did we just do?’” Maria recalls.

A PERFECT TEAM

It turned out Maria and Greg were well-suited to combine their areas of expertise and run a billiard retail store together. Greg, who holds an accounting degree, understood the operational side of the business. Maria is outgoing and enjoys meeting people, making her a natural fit for sales and customer relationships. They were also ambitious.

“We decided to look at what we were going to do with the place, because we wanted to invest in it and grow,” Maria says. “We were young, in our 20s, and we saw the potential of the retail side. I quickly learned the power of an industry trade association and trade shows right out of the gate.”

Like any career change, the transition came with challenges. For Maria, one hurdle was entering a male-dominated industry. It was a challenge she was ready to face.

“Someone would walk in expecting to be educated on the products, and they’d see me,” she says. “I’m Hispanic, I look younger than I am, and my daughter was often in the showroom with me – she’d walk around with pink chalk. People would say, ‘Can I speak to a salesman?’ I can’t tell you how many

times that happened. I’d pivot quickly and say, ‘How about a saleswoman?’”

Maria notes that while attitudes have changed significantly over the last 25 years, she still occasionally encounters customers who expect a man to be the pool table expert.

“But it’s not at the same level,” she says. “Now it’s actually an advantage to have a female salesperson on the showroom floor. Women may feel more comfortable asking questions. I didn’t foresee falling in love with the business, but maybe it was the challenge – overcoming that stigma. This isn’t just a man’s world. Women love pool tables, too.”

LEARNING

ON THE JOB

Maria didn’t come into the business with extensive experience in table games or home recreation, so she learned on the job.

“I literally learned it while working here,” she says. “The only thing I could go back to was learning how to play pool when I was 7 or 8 years old from my grandpa in Puerto Rico. He had an old wooden pool table and was very old school – he only believed in blue chalk. Even when I had my own table with camel cloth, he insisted on using blue chalk, and since he was my grandpa, I allowed it.”

Maria and Greg also learned early on the importance of industry trade shows, such as the BCA Expo, and the positive impact they could have on their business.

“I’m blessed that I saw that early,” Maria says. “It helped us become what we are today through relationships – not just with customers, but with vendors and salespeople. That network was such an asset.”

They also discovered how supportive the billiard community can be. In the early years, Greg might spend morn-

ings collecting accounts for the commercial side of the business and afternoons making deliveries or handling service calls. If Maria needed information to answer a customer’s question, she always had someone she could call.

“I relied on them for answers to what I thought were the dumbest questions,” she says. “They never treated me like they were dumb.”

SUCCESS THROUGH TRYING

Another key to the Trents’ success is their willingness to take chances and try new products – giving customers more options while strengthening relationships with vendors eager to get new products on showroom floors.

When the Trents bought Pool Tables Plus, the store had an 8,000-squarefoot showroom in a building shared with an insurance company and a dance studio. In 2005, they purchased the building outright.

“Between 2000 and 2005, we dove in, used every tool available, and grew,” Maria says. “Our showroom went from 10 pool tables to 40 or 50, plus additional products. We aim to create interactive family entertainment that’s visible the moment you walk in.”

That growth stemmed largely from the Trents’ focus on relationships and continuous learning.

“When people walk through our doors, it feels like we’re physically larger than we are,” she says. “That’s because we support the industry by trying new products and showcasing them. Diversifying and growing our retail space is key.”

Not every experiment was a success. When spas became popular among home recreation retailers, Pool Tables Plus tried adding them to its lineup.

“We thought we should follow the trend, but it didn’t work for us,” Maria says. “That’s when we realized we didn’t have to be like everyone else – we just had to get better at what we do.”

Still, innovation remains central to the business. During the pandemic, one of their children even inspired a new venture.

“Our kids grew up in the showroom,” Maria says. “During COVID, my youngest son, Gregory, was in eighth grade and pitched an idea that led to a joint venture called E-sports Arcade. He was only 13, but he was wise beyond his years.”

A FAMILY BUSINESS

Today, Beyer & Brown employs more than 30 people and continues to grow. In 2022, the Trents seized an opportunity to purchase a bowling alley, turning it into a family entertainment center.

“It was still a risk, given the economy,” Maria says. “But Gregory was 16 and had been attending commercial-space conferences. We took the leap.”

The Trents now see their businesses as a connected gaming community in the Daytona Beach area. The bowling center features pool tables and pinball machines, along with QR codes directing visitors to Pool Tables Plus.

“If someone falls in love with a pinball machine, they can go two miles up the road to our showroom,” Maria says.

One standout attraction is an Elton John pinball machine featuring disco lights and classic hits.

“There’s definitely a return to nostalgic games,” Maria says. “Older players are reliving classics, and younger players are discovering them.”

With pickleball’s rapid rise, the Trents also partnered to convert a movie theater into an indoor pickleball facility, Rally Well. Their oldest son, Xavier, has joined the company to help coordinate growth across all ventures.

“He’s working on connecting our bowling alley, pickleball facility and retail store so customers see us as one company,” Maria says.

PART OF A COMMUNITY

Just as they’re active in the billiard industry, the Trents are deeply engaged in the Daytona Beach community. During the pandemic, Maria’s involvement with local boards and organizations provided critical connections.

“We didn’t have to lay anyone off,” she says. “Those relationships helped us survive those scary months.”

She later joined the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce as public relations director.

The Trents remain committed to trade shows and plan to attend this year’s BCA Expo, continuing a tradition that spans 25 years.

“Our goal is to stay relevant, especially for the next generation,” Maria says. “Between Xavier’s role and our attendance in the Amusement Expo, we’re focused on the future. And I’ve always believed in educational seminars.”

For the Trents, success comes down to engagement.

“This is where relationships are built, face to face,” Maria says. “It’s a niche industry, and staying relevant means staying involved. If you’re not participating, you’re not contributing to the love of billiards and games.”

A Day Dedicated to INDUSTRY EDUCATION

The educational lineup at this year’s BCA Expo underscores how today’s retailers must balance tradition with innovation to stay competitive.

Sponsored by Iwan Simonis, the seminar series delivers a full slate of business-building insights and hands-on technical expertise, covering everything from AI-driven marketing and streaming media strategies to fabric fundamentals and precision table recovery techniques.

With sessions designed to help store owners increase profitability, refine their craft and explore new revenue

opportunities, the program reflects an industry focused not only on preserving the heritage of billiards, but on positioning it for long-term growth.

Kicking things off on March 17 at 9 a.m., Shane Bouchard will discuss the economic benefits to selling dart boards at billiard showrooms in the seminar “Aiming for Profit: How Darts Can Give Your Store a Boost.”

Bouchard is a member of the BCA Board of Directors and owner of Maine Home Recreation. He stumbled upon a job selling pool tables and game room equipment shortly after high school,

where he learned the ins and outs of sales, installation, and entrepreneurship in the billiards world.

At the BCA Expo, Bouchard will use his showroom experience to push for the future of a different game – darts.

“We spend a lot of time on billiards,” he says. “Yes, it’s the backbone to what we do, but the home recreation and home leisure sector is much larger than that and includes several other sports. If we are going to grow our show and help retailers grow their business, then including these other sports is vital to our growth.”

If you are a junior player interested in this program, please email questions to info@pbia-instructor.com.

Over the years, Bouchard has seen dartboard sales take off. Not only are darts a popular activity in his region from a competitive standpoint, with leagues rivaling the size of those for pool, but they also provide people with an inexpensive pastime.

“League players aside, it’s one of the most affordable games for homeowners,” he says. “So it’s accessible to just about anyone whether it’s the only game in their home or they are adding it to an existing game room.”

The benefits aren’t just one-sided, either. When stores increase the volume of dartboards available for purchase, the monetary impact is significant. Bouchard will detail the virtuous cycle that leads to positive returns for both showrooms and manufacturers alike.

“What I hope others can get from the seminar is the value of investing in an expanded dart display for their stores,” he says. “If retailers can buy in, find the value, and increase their revenues, it will lead them to purchasing more dart-related products. This will help the dart manufacturers see more value in attending the show, so it works for everyone.”

Also at 9 a.m., Adwave will break down how billiard retailers can leverage targeted, cost-effective TV campaigns to raise their visibility and strengthen their brand and make the

most of a streaming world. Attendees will learn how to produce professional-quality ads quickly, connect with the right audience and drive measurable growth without overspending. Whether exploring TV for the first time or refining an existing approach, participants will leave with practical strategies to put into action and tap into a powerful and often overlooked marketing channel.

Then at 10:30 a.m., Chris Day and Amna Shamim will detail how the growing world of artificial intelligence is closely intertwined with billiards during their seminar, “Play the Angles: AI Marketing Tactics that Enhance Your Business and Delight Your Customers.”

Shamim is an expert in marketing and data storytelling. She works at The Cannabis Community, where she specializes in content marketing and brand development. At the BCA Expo, she hopes to share her knowledge of artificial intelligence as it pertains to both the performance side of pool, as well as the commercial side.

“AI is useful far beyond generating lists of the ‘best shots in billiards,’” she says. “We get to illustrate how everything from machine learning to generative AI can help pool halls be more efficient and increase their margins, while players can use AI tools to give them that competitive edge.”

Day is a co-founder of the Global Cannabis Network Collective and partner at Flourish Theory. His background in innovation and passion for pool has inspired him to discuss how AI plays a role in shaping the future of the game.

“We want to help define what AI actually is and highlight the ways in which AI-based tools can help players, products and pool halls be more efficient, more engaging, and more profitable, while simultaneously protecting the legacy of this amazing sport,” he says.

While the rise of artificial intelligence undoubtedly has great potential in furthering both the competitive and corporate aspects of billiards, concerns that AI will inhibit the human element of the game are common. Shamim and Day aim to quell those fears, outlining how people and technology can work hand in hand.

“AI is a tool to help us perform better and enhance our businesses,” Shamim says. “It definitely is not a replacement for people or the need for operators to bring their experience and style to the table.”

Also at 10:30 a.m., Bill Dunne of Championship Cloth will present “Billiard Fabric Fundamentals,” a session designed to deepen attendees’ understanding of cloth construction, performance characteristics and proper application. The seminar will explore how different fabric blends, weaves and finishes influence speed, durability and consistency, while offering practical guidance on selecting the right cloth for various customer needs. Additionally, Martin Urrutia. the 4th-generation president of the 540,000-squarefoot mill in Santiago, Mexico where Champion’s products are made, will explain the manufacturing process and talk about the history of the mill.

The BCA’s annual General Membership Meeting, set for noon, provides members with an important opportunity to stay informed and engaged in the association’s direction. Attendees will

There is only one Master.

hear detailed reports on membership growth, engagement and retention, along with a comprehensive financial update that addresses budget performance and long-term sustainability.

BCA CEO Shane Tyree will also outline the organization’s strategic priorities, sharing goals and initiatives aimed at strengthening the industry’s future. Designed to promote transparency and collaboration, the meeting ensures members have a voice in shaping the association’s continued progress.

At 1:30 p.m., the BCA’s Next Generation Seminar, led by Jacklyn Ady of Brunswick Billiards, spotlights the industry’s rising leaders and forward-thinking innovators. Representing the evolving home leisure market, these emerging voices will share fresh perspectives on trends, smart home entertainment and lifestyle-driven product development. Through a dynamic, expert-led discussion, attendees will gain practical insights they can apply to strengthen and modernize their own operations. The session reinforces the BCA’s commitment to blending creativity with technology, equipping professionals and enthusiasts to help shape the future of billiards and home leisure.

Bob Evens and Rob Molina of Predator Group will lead “High-Performance Rails – European vs. American Fold,” a technical session focused on professional table recovery techniques. The presentation will compare the two rail cloth folding methods, explaining how each impacts playability, durability and overall table performance. Attendees will gain practical insight into best practices, precision installation tips and the nuances that separate standard recoveries from truly high-performance results.

At 3:30 p.m., get more installation tips and tricks brought to you by Diamond Table and Simonis Cloth.

The seminars conclude with the Brunswick Dealer Summit at 4 p.m., which is something you won’t want to miss.

Katana Cuatro shafts fuse carbon power with wood feel, delivering explosive energy, precise control, and natural feedback for players who want modern performance with a more traditional feel.

New Katana Carbon shafts deliver ultra-low deflection, unmatched consistency, crisp feedback, and the power and precision players expect from Katana’s performance engineering.

Tradition Meets Transformation THE GAME WILL NEVER BE THE SAME

For nearly a century, the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) has promoted, protected and advanced cue sports across the United States. Today, we take one of the most consequential steps in our association’s history with the formal announcement and formation of USA Cue Sports.

USA Cue Sports has been established to serve as the unified player federation for professional cue sport athletes in the United States and North America. As outlined in its newly adopted Constitution, USA Cue Sports shall “encourage, promote, develop, advance and be the recognized unifying body of all cue sports in North America,” while operating in collaboration with

the BCA and in coordination with the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) and the World Confederation of Billiards Sports (WCBS).

This is not merely a structural realignment between organizations. It is a cultural shift for our sport and our industry.

For decades, cue sports in America have wrestled with perception. Far too often, they have been viewed as a pastime played in a smoke-filled bar rather than a disciplined athletic pursuit governed by rules, ethics, training standards and defined competitive pathways. That narrative changes now. USA Cue Sports formally adopts sports policy consistent with the Olympic Char-

ter, recognizes the WADA Anti-Doping Code and aligns with internationally accepted standards of governance and integrity.

This alignment is deliberate. The ultimate mission of USA Cue Sports is recognition by the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC). Such recognition would validate cue sports as an Olympic-level discipline in governance, athlete protection and competitive structure. More importantly, it would position American players within a globally recognized sporting framework – one that creates a clear, credible pathway to develop tomorrow’s world champions.

Yet this transformation extends well beyond elite competition. It strengthens the entire ecosystem of our industry.

The USA Cue Sports Board of Directors reflects the full diversity of our sport. Representation includes North American federations; a professional women’s athlete representative; a men’s professional athlete representative; snooker and carom delegates; a para-athlete representative; a youth representative through the Billiard Education Foundation; a national amateur league representative; and a pool room proprietor representative. For now, every voting member must be in good standing with the BCA, ensuring that sport governance and industry leadership remain strategically aligned.

Article IV of the Constitution makes the federation’s intent clear: USA Cue Sports will conduct national championships across all disciplines that nominate athletes to international compe-

titions. We will continue to maintain comprehensive ranking lists and develop training programs for officials and coaches. In short, it establishes a proper sporting code foundation our industry has long needed – one built on structure, accountability and opportunity.

“USA Cue Sports represents unity and the future of the next generation of players,” says BCA Chairman Jacklyn Ady. “It ensures that our athletes, leagues, rooms and industry partners stand together under one credible, internationally respected structure. This is how we elevate the sport throughout the United States and North America.”

USA Cue Sports President Ed Liddawi underscores the athlete-first mission: “For the first time, American cue sport athletes have a defined, protected and internationally aligned federation advocating on their behalf. This creates opportunity, accountability and legitimacy at every level.”

From my perspective, this is a turning point for our industry. It is bigger than governance. This is the moment cue sports in America stop asking for recognition and start defining their place on the world stage. We are building the infrastructure that transforms players into athletes, tournaments into championships and passion into Olympic possibility.

STATE O F THE BCA

BCA ANNUAL REPORT

While writing this message to our membership last year, we spoke of our hope that the inertia we had established would continue to result in positive organizational performance. Twelve months later, we are pleased to report that our wishes have materialized. We have completed our second year in a row with strong results in our performance indicators and a positive bottom line hovering comfortably in the green.

To serve your bottom line better and improve the quality of services to our PBIA instructors and play partners, we continue to realign assets and empower experts to direct our programs. This realignment has resulted in greater efficiencies while simultaneously improving the quality of our member services across programs. Our fiscal performance is strong, while feedback from our customers indicates strong satisfaction across program areas.

Our ability to better meet your needs as members was on full display this past year. As you all know, our industry was presented with an array of economic challenges this year. The pace of change relative to economic variables was unprecedented for numerous industries, and particularly for one as intimate and international as ours. We were hit with tariffs on the imports we depend on while struggling to overcome poor consumer confidence in a seemingly secure economic environment. Many of our customers are experiencing uncertainty that impacts their decision on whether to purchase that new break cue, another table, or even to reclothe the old one.

A lack of clarity and the uncertainty surrounding tariffs required us to shift course midstream last year. We were not confident that our traditional communication and advocacy practices with elected officials were effective and felt that an increased presence with our legislators was necessary.

During our Expo planning season and preparation for our summer play event, Shane Tyree, BCA’s CEO, went to Washington, D.C. to ensure our industry’s voice and membership were represented. Shane met with legislators from across America and communicated the impacts that tariffs have on our industry while highlighting our significant dependence on manufacturing in the United States.

We were able to pivot and refocus executive efforts on advocacy due to the repositioning of responsibilities with experts. Nowhere is this clearer than in our PBIA program. We have empowered longtime PBIA member Rob Moreno to administer our instructor program. He has grown it and enhanced the content of the curriculum. Rob’s efforts have resulted in program growth around the world and the addition of a cognitive centering program for our upper-level instructors.

We continue to depend inordinately upon our marquee Expo event to achieve our financial benchmarks. And, notwithstanding modest predictions, we are set for a record-breaking Expo 2026. Despite this strong performance, we realize that rising costs for exhibitors and attendees require us to remain vigilant in identifying ways to offer our membership buying and selling opportunities in a cost-effective environment.

Our management agreement with the Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) continues to provide a consumer-rich environment for tomorrow’s billiard consumers. And, while we continue to ensure the BEF provides young adults with high-quality play events in environments that encourage the acquisition of coping and life skills, we recognize that financial and administrative independence for the organization is essential for long-term success. Myrriah Pierson, BEF Director, and the BEF Board will work with billiard businesses and room operators across the country to establish a stakeholder structure that supports an independent funding structure.

To ensure the BCA promotes the interests of our membership in competitive play, we are creating USA Cue Sports, which will promote play events across the country that culminate in the creation of an annual National Team to represent the United States in competitive world play.

The creation of USA Cue Sports represents our ongoing efforts to promote our industry’s voice in world billiards and to streamline BCA operations. These aims keep us agile in a dynamic environment and ensure we can continue to promote your business as effectively as possible.

Momentum continues to build for the 2026 BCA Billiard & Home Leisure Expo, which will once again be co-located with Amusement Expo International (AEI) at the Las Vegas Convention Center, March 17-19.

Now entering its fourth-consecutive year of collaboration with AEI, the co-located format has proven to be a winning combination – expanding opportunities for exhibitors and attendees alike.

By bringing together the billiard, home leisure and amusement sectors under one roof, the Expo creates a dynamic marketplace filled with innovation, energy and cross-industry potential.

The 2026 event is shaping up to be a true industry celebration.

“This year’s BCA Expo will be better than ever,” said BCA CEO Shane Tyree. “We’re showcasing the very best brands in billiards and home leisure all under one roof, and we have an incredible lineup of events planned throughout the week –from informative installer education sessions to exciting giveaways and an amazing industry party. It’s going to be a can’t-miss experience for everyone in our industry.”

As a hub for cutting-edge products, premium equipment and essential services, the BCA Expo is designed to spark meaningful conversations and generate valuable leads. Retailers, distributors and manufacturers gather not just to display products, but to exchange ideas, explore new partnerships and gain insights into trends shaping the future of the billiard business.

The co-location with AEI further broadens the experience. Attendees can explore AEI vendors and discover products that complement or expand their existing offerings, opening the door to new markets and revenue streams. For many businesses, the shared show floor creates opportunities that simply wouldn’t happen in a standalone environment.

Beyond the exhibits, the week promises engaging programming, hands-on education and networking events that strengthen industry ties. Whether it’s connecting with longtime partners, meeting potential new suppliers or celebrating at one of the Expo’s signature gatherings, the BCA Expo continues to position itself as THE place to build relationships and grow your business.

PROHIBITION IS CANCELLED:

BCA INDUSTRY CELEBRATION PROMISES

ROARING GOOD TIME AT THE HUSTLERS’ HIDEAWAY

The password is out, the jazz is warming up and the billiard industry is ready to raise a glass – because at this year’s BCA Expo, Prohibition is officially cancelled.

The BCA Industry Celebration, themed “Hustlers’ Hideaway,” takes place Wednesday, March 18 at 5:30 p.m. at the iconic Las Vegas Country Club. With its storied history and old-school Vegas charm, the venue provides a fitting back-

drop for a 1920s-inspired evening filled with live music, traypassed hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, raffles and plenty of industry camaraderie.

Guests are encouraged to dress to impress in Roarin’ 20s fashion – think flapper fringe, pinstripes, fedoras and pearls –for a night that blends nostalgia, networking and nonstop entertainment.

Setting the mood for the evening is Lisa Smith and her ensemble. A Las Vegas-based jazz vocalist with more than 15 years of professional experience, Smith has performed throughout the United States and internationally. She is widely known for her interpretations of classic jazz, swing and vintage standards, creating a perfect soundtrack for a speakeasy-style soirée.

Smith is a multiple-time Rising Star Award winner and was ranked the No. 1 Jazz Singer in the U.S. on GigMasters for six consecutive years. Her polished stage presence and warm, expressive vocals bring authenticity to the golden age of jazz, making her a natural fit for an event steeped in 1920s glamour.

Backed by a seasoned ensemble, Smith’s performance promises a mix of timeless standards and upbeat swing favorites that will keep the energy high from the first cocktail to the final raffle call.

Rather than a formal sit-down meal, guests can expect elegant bites circulating throughout the venue, ideal for mingling and making connections.

Returning once again is Las Vegas Photo Booth Company, a longtime supporter of the event. The family-owned and operated business will provide its popular photo booth experience, along with select centerpieces and décor throughout the venue.

Known for high-quality photo booth services and premium floral rentals, the company believes photography and florals are an art form that should be accessible, especially for meaningful events. Their presence ensures that attendees can capture their best Gatsby-inspired looks while enjoying elevated décor that enhances the venue’s classic ambiance.

One exciting update for 2026: the raffle winners will be announced live during the event. This new format allows us to properly recognize and thank generous raffle donors in real time, adding another layer of energy and appreciation to the evening.

The raffle has long been a highlight of the Industry Celebration, and announcing winners live creates a shared moment of anticipation and celebration among attendees.

More than just a party, the BCA Industry Celebration serves as a gathering point for manufacturers, retailers, suppliers and partners across the billiards and game room industry. It offers a relaxed, festive environment to strengthen relationships, spark new conversations and celebrate the people who power the industry year-round.

With its historic venue, immersive theme and thoughtfully curated entertainment, this year’s “Hustlers’ Hideaway” is poised to be one of the most memorable celebrations yet.

So press your suit, polish your shoes and prepare to step back in time, because for one night in Las Vegas, the spirit of the Roaring 20s is alive and well.

ABOUT:

Billiard table lighting and whole home lighting. LED and incandescent.

Since the 1960s, the patented BRAD Scuffer has been shaping the tips of America.

Harold Reinhart, an automotive engineer and avid billiard player, invented a way to quickly replace a tip using a pop-in method. Because the plastic surface of the pop-in tips was slick, he needed something that would scuff up the tip so it would accept chalk. So, he invented the BRAD Scuffer.

Al and Alicia Morrison of International Billiards, Inc. met Reinhart through their mutual friend, the legendary Willie Mosconi. In the 1970s, International Billiards became the largest distributor of the BRAD Scuffer until they ultimately purchased BRAD in 1979. While the pop-in tips are no longer made, the BRAD Scuffer remains one of the most recognized tip tools in billiards.

We combined a fully carbon fiber cue with our VBP adjustable weight and balance system, so you can fine-tune feel, feedback, and control—together. This is the future of play.
