A SUPERB SECOND CAREER DARRELL AND KAREN MEDDINGS HAVE MADE BILLIARDS AND BARSTOOLS A BELOVED DESTINATION IN CALIFORNIA By Anthony Stoeckert 8 | BCA INSIDER • EXPO 2019
It was 1989 when Darrell Meddings attended his first BCA Expo. He and his wife, Karen, had just opened their first store under the moniker of Billiards and Barstools in Glendale, California, and it’s fair to say that Darrell’s participation in that Expo was an important factor in the success of his business. “He was just crazy about it, he was so excited,” Karen says. Darrell brought with him a level of excitement and enthusiasm common among new entrepreneurs, and he learned about products at the Expo – along with what he needed to buy and how to go about owning and operating his own home recreation store. Then there were the connections and friendships he made with people within the industry from all across the country – people he still calls friends some 30 years later. But Darrell Meddings wasn’t some young, starry-eyed kid when he opened his business. He was 55 and had been working as a meat cutter for 39 years when he decided to set up shop. “I think it’s miraculous that he started the business at 55,” Karen says. “Most people are retiring at that age. He had been a meat manager for many years and he decided that his feet were hurting and it was so cold that he figured he needed to get out.”
into the business. We made the change when he retired from the meat industry.” Darrell played pool casually when he was younger, but the game wasn’t a passion of his – until he opened his first store. “It was called Billiards and Barstools from the start,” Karen says. “And we sold anything and everything you’d want in a game room. We had the pool tables, the jukeboxes, barstools, foosball, ping-pong, we just had it all. That’s still what we’re doing today. “In the beginning, it was just Darrell and myself working in it. He still worked part time as a meat cutter to keep our insurance until he saw the business was going to be OK and be able to support us.”
SUCCESS THROUGH SERVICE Darrell worked both jobs for six months and when Billiards and Barstools was successful enough for him to devote his full energies to his new business, he was happy to make that move.
Darrell had dabbled in the billiard business about 20 years earlier when he teamed up with a friend who manufactured pool tables, and they sold Gotham tables out of Darrell’s garage.
“We absolutely loved it,” Karen says. “We loved meeting the people; people would come in just because they saw all the interesting things in our windows. We would be there until late at night, talking to people. Maybe they were buying things, maybe they weren’t, it didn’t matter; we were just building a good rapport with a lot of people. We really believed word of mouth is your best advertising.”
“And then that went by the wayside and the friend ended up going into production; he was a manufacturer of pool tables,” Karen says. “We were always good friends and he wanted Darrell to come
Also helpful was the excellent reputation Billiards and Barstools earned rather quickly.
STARTING A SECOND CAREER
“Before long, we were doing very well, we were successful,” Karen says. “Our customers always came first and then we grew from there.”
CONTINUING A TRADITION Over the years, Darrell and Karen opened several stores, all of which offered Billiards and Barstools’ renowned level of customer service, along with the finest merchandise. They recently closed their operation in Sylmar, just outside Los Angeles, but they are still operating showrooms in Newbury Park and San Marcos. “Now we’re down to two stores,” Karen says. “But Darrell just loved the business, and he loved everyone he met in the business; he played golf with Willie Mosconi, and he just absolutely loved it.” Billiards and Barstools aptly bills itself as a “Big Kid’s Toy Store,” and it sells everything a person could want in a recreation room. Feel like playing a game? In addition to pool tables, the store sells air hockey, pinball, arcade games, darts, foosball, shuffleboard and table tennis. Furniture offerings include bars, barstools, dining sets, game chairs, and poker and game tables. Add some music to the room with a jukebox, and pick up all Left to Right: Brian Otis, Dan Henderson, Angela Otis

the accessories you need, such as cues, cases, lighting, gloves, tips, and cloth.
she’s quick to reply, “That sure is. We like that very much, that is for sure.”
And the store’s variety of offerings also allows customers to add some personality to their game rooms. For example, if you want to buy a pinball machine, you can choose themes such as The Walking Dead or Transformers. And children of the ’80s and ’90s can add to their recreation rooms a favorite arcade game – whether it’s Pac-Man or Super Mario Brothers.
THE CHALLENGE OF A LIFETIME
Also for sale at the store are accessories for other table games, such as pingpong, foosball, shuffleboard, air hockey, along with cabinets and dart supplies.
THE FINEST QUALITY The owners also take pride in selling their patrons the very best brands, such as Brunswick, Presidential, Aramath Fusion, and California House tables. Shuffleboard offerings include Champion, Brunswick and Olhausen. Then there are Brunswick and Joola hockey tables, and Joola, Cornilleau, Presidential, and Brunswick table tennis models. Another key aspect of the business’ success is service, as Billiards and Barstools’ experts are renowned for doing excellent work and bringing care and pride in craft to every job. “We have a wonderful service team,” Karen says. “We do very well with our service and repeat business. It’s just amazing with service, how people do things. They’ll move a pool table from one house to another house and then six months from now they move it back to the other house. It’s amazing, to me, how people are with their service work, with the moving of things and redoing the tables.” Indeed, she marvels at how a lot of Billiards and Barstools’ clientele spend a good deal of money on their game rooms, and when it’s pointed out that that’s a good thing for the business, 10 | BCA INSIDER • EXPO 2019
Sadly, fate has dealt Darrell and Karen a tough hand. Darrell had been experiencing terrible pain for years, but didn’t get any answers as to what was wrong even when doctors examined him at a hospital this past January. “We couldn’t find out what was wrong with him,” Karen says. “He had neurologists, he had all the doctors doing all this testing on him and he was in there for about a week and they found nothing.” It was during an eye examination when his doctor noticed something unusual. “And he sent him for a CAT scan and that’s when they discovered this tumor,” Karen says. “It was from there that he had his biopsy and he was Stage 4B, which meant that it was incurable and it was inoperable.” The tumor is on the right side of Darrell’s face and extends to his spinal cord. “It was growing quite rapidly and he was in a lot of pain,” Karen says. In April, doctors told Darrell the horrible news that his tumor was inoperable and incurable. He started radiation in May, which lasted for three weeks, but he isn’t receiving chemotherapy because the combination of the two would be too much for him. “The purpose of giving him radiation was to hopefully take away his pain,” Karen says. “It has done so immensely, he’s still having pain but it’s not a constant 24/7 pain, he does have relief now. We just need to make him comfortable, they say, and we’re doing that.” Top-Left: Vicki Bliss; Opposite: Karen Parsons
FIGHTING THROUGH TOUGH TIMES Darrell’s illness isn’t the first challenge Billiards and Barstools has faced since opening its doors in 1989. Like so many other business owners Darrell and Karen Meddings experienced difficult times during the economic downturn about a decade ago. “In 2008, everything really went downhill and we really struggled,” Karen says. “That’s when that little depression hit and it took us a while to overcome it. We’re still having struggles today but I attribute that to Darrell not being in the store for three years. He hasn’t really been well for that length of time.” But things are turning around under general manager Brian Opis. “He’s working hard and really has a lot on his plate because he’s trying to do everything that Darrell would want him to do,” Karen says of this dedicated employee. One key goal for the store is to improve and update its digital presence, with
more active social media platforms, and a re-designed website. “We’re changing our system and they’re going to be redoing our whole website,” Karen says. There is hope that Darrell will be able to attend this year’s Expo in Las Vegas and see his friends in the home gaming industry one more time. “He just wants to go to this BCA show so badly,” Karen says. “He wants to see his old friends. It’s changed a lot since we first went, but he wants to see the vendors, he hopes to be able to go. I hope that he can and we may try to do it because he wants to so badly.” It’s far from a guarantee that they’ll be able to attend, but Karen thinks it’s possible if they can get there a few days early, which would allow Darrell to rest before the big event. And if the Meddings do attend, this year’s Expo is going to be extra special – for Darrell Meddings and his colleagues in the business, so be sure to say hello, and tell him how much Billiards and Barstools has meant to the home recreation industry.

It is also a fantastic opportunity to network and make connections that can help your business succeed. Indeed, the Expo offers a few activities that are perfect for networking – there’s even an Industry Social & Networking event scheduled for July 24. Then there are the Membership Buffet Breakfast and Industry Nightcap, which bookend the activities set for July 25. But effective networking takes more than walking up to random people asking them how they can help you. With a little research, some smart planning, and the right approach, you’ll be able to introduce yourself to the right people and lay down the foundation for relationships that can help everyone’s businesses thrive and survive.
PLAN AHEAD – FAR AHEAD If you want to leave the Expo with some new contacts, you need to get to work well before the big event itself. Beth Bridges, an author, speaker, and coach who shares insights on networking on her website, www.thenetworkingmotivator.com, says that while a lot of people judge events like the Expo based on the ability to make contacts and networking opportunities, they don’t have a game plan on how to create those all-important networking opportunities. 28 | BCA INSIDER • EXPO 2019
To get started, Bridges suggests finding out in advance who will actually be at the big event. You can then reach out to people through social media with a hashtag, like #BCAExpo. “I did this once to find running partners at a conference,” Bridges says. “By the last day, there were six of us heading out together for a morning jog! By talking with, or connecting with, other attendees on social media beforehand, you’re creating a warmer environment. Imagine walking up to a booth and instead of meeting a stranger, you see someone you know from social media. It’s a warm introduction instead of a cold one.” Bridges also suggests reaching out to people who you would specifically like to connect with people in advance of the Expo. “This should not be any kind of sales pitch or call,” she says. “Simply a note to say ‘I will be at BCA Expo this summer and I’m looking forward to meeting you or learning about your company. Here is our booth number.’” Kristen Fowler, vice president for JMJ Phillip Executive Search, a manufacturing branch of Heaver Hitter Holdings, also suggests reaching out to potential new contacts ahead of time to schedule a meeting. “Many of the attendees at the Expo or convention are from out of state, freeing them from any normal obligations, and that makes scheduling time to discuss business easier than normal,” Fowler says. One other tip as you prepare for the Expo – bring business cards. “Yes, business cards still exist in 2019,” says Stanley Tan, a digital marketing specialist with Selby’s. “It is still the fastest way

to exchange contact information in a fast-paced networking event like a trade show.”
She then suggests emailing people of interest, or contacting them via LinkedIn.
USE THE WEBSITE
“It can be just for introduction purposes but the ultimate goal is to set up a meeting with them during the event or at least get to know each other in case you bump into that person,” she says. “Besides, during the events there are always networking opportunities, during which you can introduce yourself to other participants.”
There is a fantastic resource that can help you prepare for networking opportunities at the Expo – and it’s right at your fingertips. The Expo’s website, www.bcaexpo.com, offers a tremendous amount of information that can help you get the most out of your Expo experience. Two areas of the website to pay particular attention to are the schedule of events and the floor plan. The schedule lists everything that will be going on at the Expo, and when, which allows you to establish a game plan as to when to arrange meetings, or schedule some time to explore and meet new contacts right at the Expo.
“
THINK TWICE ABOUT A CALL
...GETTING IN TOUCH WITH PEOPLE AFTER THE EXPO IS KEY.”
The floor plan is a map and guide that tells you where all the exhibitors will be located during the big event. You can look over the entire floor plan, and hover your mouse over booth spaces to find out the booth number of the businesses you’re interested in visiting. Nadya Yatsenka, marketing manager for Blinger.io, which helps companies connect through social media, says working through a list of participants is a terrific way to prepare for the Expo.
As helpful as reaching out to people in advance can be, Stacy Caprio, founder of Growth Marketing, warns against using the old-fashioned phone for the most part.
“Contacting someone by phone ahead of time isn’t the best idea unless you have a very specific reason for doing so, as they could perceive you as rude, simply a fan, or even a borderline stalker,” she says. “The best thing to do is to engage with them in small ways on social media, and if they send out monthly emails in a newsletter you can reply to a few with insightful questions or comments. This way you’ll stand out in their mind in a small, positive way, and you will have a much warmer introduction when approaching them in person at the conference.” Similarly, Leo Friedman, CEO of iPromo, has mixed feelings about a direct contact by email or phone prior to the Expo.
BCAINSIDER.COM | 29
“I think it depends on the circumstances and the subject of the call or email,” he says. “Some might be impressed with your enthusiasm; others might find it a little odd as well. It’s a tough call honestly.”
DO YOUR RESEARCH There will be lots of great people representing the best businesses in the billiard and home leisure industry at the Expo, and having quality meetings with everyone there isn’t feasible. It also might not be productive, as not every vendor there will be someone who can help your business, so take the time to find out in advance who will be there and prioritize the people you want to meet based on how they can help you and vice-versa. “It’s a good idea to research which vendors will be attending the Expo beforehand,” Friedman says. “That way you can get a sense of whom you might want to talk to and allow you to make better use of your time there. It will also give a good impression that you know your stuff about the company or representative you’ll be talking to. Don’t be afraid to go outside of your comfort zone there and approach people as well. Introduce yourself to anyone that might be of interest to your business.” Friedman also offers a helpful tip that can help break the ice while meeting new people at the Expo. “I recommend looking up some conservation starters designed specifically for networking events,” he says. “They have proved useful and can open the door to more targeted conversations, which may lead to future business deals. And like anything, practice makes perfect.” A quick Google search will lead you to several websites that provide examples of conversation starters for busi30 | BCA INSIDER • EXPO 2019
ness, but a few choice examples include some pretty basic things. Of course, ask about their business, not only what they do but what led to them getting into the industry. Ask about where they’re from, how they like Las Vegas, how many Expos they’ve been to. Most people like to talk about themselves, so be prepared to ask questions. And very important, be sure to listen, which helps build a good conversation. Yanina Noel, communications director for L2TECH Drones Detection LLC, says networking begins with posts to your social media accounts and messaging people to set up a meeting. Now that you have a few meetings scheduled, prepare what you’re going to say. “Get your pitch polished,” Noel says. “What you are going to say to your valuable contacts is 90 percent of your success. During [the Expo] everyone will be exhausted. It’s like an elevator pitch – you have only one to two minutes to catch the other person’s attention.” And don’t underestimate the importance of social gatherings. “Be a social butterfly. You won’t look awkward,” Noel says. “Just approach people, either presenting yourself or with casual phrases like ‘How are you enjoying the Expo so far? Did you attend last year?’ Don’t miss out on after-parties and the Expo’s hotel bars and restaurants, as most of the attendees will show up there later. The relaxing atmosphere will be more helpful.” Also, while researching businesses, figure out how you can help other entrepreneurs. The best relationships are those where everyone walks away happy.

AT THE EXPO So it’s Expo time and you’re surrounded by terrific people who help make the industry special and who are there to build upon their businesses and also find some time to relax and have some fun. And if there’s someone there who you think can help you and your company, you can’t sit around hoping they make the first move. “Put yourself out there and never wait for someone else to approach you,” Fowler says. “Don’t be afraid to make the proper introductions and ask the appropriate questions when networking. Keep in mind that people love to discuss what they do or talk about their products. Take the time to listen and to make a proper connection. Once you do, exchange contact information to follow up in the future.” Planning is fantastic but you can’t predict every networking opportunity the Expo will offer, and there’s nothing stopping you from approaching people during the event. “Just want to introduce yourself to someone you’ve never met? Go ahead. That’s a big part of what expos and conferences are for,” Bridges says. “They should be open to at least the introduction. If not, they had a different agenda. You can’t take it personally. Move on to others who appear to be talking with new people. They are there to meet new people.”
AFTER THE EXPO Meeting new people and talking about how you can help each other’s businesses is just the beginning. In order to see the fruits of a new relationship, you have to get in touch with your new contacts after the Expo is over.
32 | BCA INSIDER • EXPO 2019
“I think the best way to follow up is the day after with either a phone call or an email unless you’ve both agreed to expect a call or email beforehand,” Friedman says. “Many show attendees will be very tired after a long day on the floor and may want to relax afterwards.” Tan notes that getting in touch with people after the Expo is key. “If there isn’t a follow-up after the event, the relationship ends there at the trade show,” he says. “A simple follow-up email will do. The email doesn’t need to have a business goal. The goal of the email is to let them know you remembered and it was nice to meet them.” Yatsenka also stresses the importance of the follow-up. “I would say it’s a must to follow up after an event if you don’t want to lose the contact or lead,” she says. “It’s one of the most important stages where you estimate the potential return on investment for your business. Emailing is the best way. In the email you should introduce yourself, do some pleasant talk on how you enjoyed meeting at the event and outline the main ideas discussed together with the next steps for potential cooperation.” Another key to following up with a new client is timing. “Avoid following up with your contact too soon,” Fowler says. “For best practices, send an email a day after to follow up with your contact. Be sure to thank them for their time and include one or two sentences about what you had discussed previously.” And that can be the first step to a beautiful friendship – and business relationship.

GET NOTICED ON LINKEDIN By Charles S. Donnavan Most of us in the billiard industry are on Facebook, and many people have joined Twitter and Insatgram in recent years. But one social media site that’s still not getting its due is LinkedIn. Yes, LinkedIn can be a great way to promote your business. Currently, there are more than 65 million business professionals from around the world on LinkedIn and the average LinkedIn member has an average annual household income of $109,000. A recent survey released by LinkedIn shows that approximately 50 percent of LinkedIn members have decision-making authority for their companies, so that could help your business grow and thrive. Billiard retailers can use LinkedIn to network, gain referrals and shares information about what’s happening in the store. 40 | BCA INSIDER • EXPO 2019
Linda Pophal, a social media expert with Strategic Communications, LLC, says as a B2B social media channel, LinkedIn offers some great opportunities to get in front of relevant target audiences. She recommends that billiard retailers build a strong LinkedIn personal profile (or several personal profiles) for each key spokesperson (CEO, sales people, business development, etc.). “Personal profiles are much stronger and more flexible than company profiles,” Pophal says. “Company profiles, for instance, are not able to follow others and are, therefore, limited in their reach. Company profiles are, generally, used more for job postings than anything else. While organizations should have one, the focus should be on personal profiles.”
Once you set one up, it’s important to use the right keywords in the personal profiles. These should be the words and phrases that those seeking your services would likely be using to find these services/products, such as cue ball, billiards, pool table, etc.
“
She believes those personal profiles of executives are where you should be engaging with your customers and potential customers. By generating quality content, strangers begin to see you as a friend of a friend – someone they feel comfortable doing business with or asking for advice.
...THE MORE ACTIVELY INVOLVED GETTING STARTED YOU ARE, THE MORE EFFECTIVE To get started on LinkedIn, one simply has to create a username and set the profile up. Your goal should be to avoid a AND QUICKER THE RESULTS.” boring ho-hum profile, and instead to create a profile that attracts people to you and your company.
“Find and follow other profiles that are relevant to your marketing efforts as these might be potential customers, or they might be influencers,” Pophal says. “Reach out and connect with those you already know and those with whom you would like to establish relationships.”
There are two main ways to dive into LinkedIn business promotion – using a passive approach or taking proactive action. Either way, like all other marketing strategies, the more time and effort you put into your LinkedIn marketing efforts, the bigger the rewards.
Additionally, when on LinkedIn, it’s a good idea to find groups that are relevant to your target audience and industry. While currently there aren’t a lot of groups for billiards, there may be other phrases and terms you could try to identify the target audience or related audience.
By simply having a LinkedIn profile, building your connections, and keeping your account updated, you can get the attention of potential clients, customers, joint-venture partners, and influencers.
“Find and join the relevant groups and become active in them by posting information and responding to others’ posts,” Pophal says. “This is a great way to build your network as well as to build relationships and referral sources.” Marcin Nieweglowski, a LinkedIn adviser for Digital Now, notes billiards makes people envision noble, elite activity. Thus, it has many common things with the business of the sport.
“This gives you exposure to people hunting for products or services,” Pophal says. “LinkedIn’s search features allow others who are looking for what you offer to find you.” It can also help with gaining you introductions to potential clients.Your LinkedIn business connections can give you an in with people and businesses you might not otherwise be able to reach.
“That is strategy mindset, self-discipline and resilience,” he says. “All these values should be taking advantage of communicating on LinkedIn’s Company Page by providing human stories.” Additionally, if the owner of a given billiard retailer is true 100 percent aficionado of these cue sports, he or she can share their passion for this on a private profile, boosting business proof and becoming a hero on the B2B platform. LinkedIn is also a perfect platform for social listening, to follow business needs related to the billiard issues on a daily basis. Joni Holderman, a social media expert, says the key to a successful LinkedIn presence is to deliver interesting, engaging content several times a day; not just post press releases about company news or accomplishments. “Company pages are not effective marketing tools on LinkedIn. They just do not generate leads,” she says. “But you do need a company page to make the personal profiles of your executives more credible.” BCAINSIDER.COM | 41
“Displaying your recommendations from others on LinkedIn is another plus,” Pophal says. “Recommendations are word-ofmouth testimonials for you and your business. They provide credibility that encourages people to do business with you.” A low cost Buffer or HootSuite account can automate posting on LinkedIn, which will save a lot of time, but a billiard retailer will still need to engage manually by liking, sharing and commenting on posts. Like most other business tactics, the more actively involved you are, the more effective and quicker the results. To best take advantage of LinkedIn’s ability to promote your business, you should be posting regular status updates, talking about what’s happening in the store and including updates that would be of interest to your target customers and clients.
A LITTLE MORE FOR THE MONEY Although basic LinkedIn is free, there are some things the site offers that cost money, but can be well worth it. First is LinkedIn advertising. Paid advertising on LinkedIn is still a relative bargain and can get your business in front of your market quickly.
42 | BCA INSIDER • EXPO 2019
Or consider upgrading to a paid LinkedIn membership. This will give you additional contact options and other benefits that may be a good fit for what you’re trying to accomplish. LinkedIn offers “Career,” “Business,” “Sales” and “Hiring” upgrade options. Often, LinkedIn offers a free trial so you can test out the additional features from a paid membership before committing to it.
MARKETING MATTERS Adding LinkedIn to your marketing strategy can help you expand your network, find clients/customers, and create a professional image for you and your business. Consider adding a LinkedIn Badge to your website or blog, so your visitors can see your profile. Even if you don’t think LinkedIn can work for your business, it’s worth a tour to check out how others in your field are maximizing what LinkedIn has to offer. As a networking resource, LinkedIn can give you connections that can lead to publicity, more work, and other great business growing advantages.

KURT SCHMIDT HONORED WITH BCA PRESIDENT’S AWARD By Keith Loria
Kurt Schmidt of A.E. Schmidt is the recipient of the 2018 BCA President’s Award. “I selected Kurt for this award because his company has been a mainstay in the billiard industry for over 150 years, and under Kurt’s stewardship, A.E. Schmidt Billiards has weathered, and even prospered during adverse economic conditions,” says BCA Chairman Brian Igielski. “Kurt Schmidt has spent his entire life in billiards, and his knowledge and history of this business is a living treasure for the game.” A.E. Schmidt, which crafts beautiful pool tables and game room furniture in St. Louis, Missouri, has been family owned and operated since 1850, maintaining a remarkable allegiance to the original ideas of its founder, Ernst Schmidt. 44 | BCA INSIDER • EXPO 2019
“We have always maintained that quality pool tables should be the focus of our business, that we should be the ‘go to company’ when no one else can help,” says Kurt Schmidt, who co-owns the company with his wife, Karen. “A pool table hasn’t changed that much in 100 years; in fact, we still build one model that came out in 1924. We are all for the family-run mom and pop billiard dealers. They are the backbone of this industry year in year out. They need to be protected and helped in every way possible.” Igielski notes that Schmidt doesn’t take shortcuts. “When some in this industry have looked to alternative materials and construction in order to save money and time, Kurt has remained true to ‘quality first,’ because his name is on every
table, literally,” he says. “To me, his biggest accomplishment has been his ability to remain committed to the industry and his ancestry. While most of us have come into the billiard industry as a career choice, Kurt was born into it. And his company has been a stalwart in this industry, successfully managing the ebb and flow of the billiard industry.” It was about a decade ago when Schmidt wondered if the industry would continue supporting a domestically made pool table and he was pleased with what he discovered. “That answer has come loud and clear that this industry still wants a quality, hand-built table. More importantly, they want options – lots of them,” he says. “We have based our business on trying to never say no to what the cus-
tomer wants design wise. We currently build nearly 70 different models, some of which are private label. While most of what we build is semi-custom, we do lots of fullblown customs.”
“
room on the front of our factory,” he says. “We made this decision so that our customers could experience all the stages of our product, from going into the factory to seeing how the tables are built, then going back in the showroom and building their table exactly how they want. This type of experience really helps close a sale and helps show the customer the value of our product.”
SCHMIDT IS THRILLED THAT THE FAMILY LEGACY HAS LASTED SIX GENERATIONS.”
The company’s flexibility in woods, finishes and designs has been a big help to many of its dealers and has helped A.E. Schmidt greatly expand its dealer presence. According to Schmidt, a top showroom in today’s world is made by what kind of experience you can bring customers when they’re in your store. “Last August, we implemented that change to our own showroom, by closing a branch store and adding a show-
Many years ago, Igielski was told by a colleague, “if you want to know anything about this industry or pool tables, just ask Kurt Schmidt. And when you do, be prepared for a lengthy history lesson detailing more than what you asked.”
“He has a willingness to share his knowledge because it’s the health and preservation of the billiard industry that is paramount to Kurt,” Igielski says. “Kurt Schmidt builds pool tables. Not just his company, but Kurt himself builds pool tables. Day and night. He will outwork anyone.” For his part, Schmidt is thrilled that the family legacy has lasted six generations. “All the current members feel that we have to live up to what the prior generations have done,” he says. “That’s not to say that we all don’t have ambitions beyond those of the past for this company. Everyone wants to contribute and make their own mark. It seems so basic and simple, but we are one of the few that have not diversified into other industries. For that, I am proud.”

SCOTT LEE WINS PBIA JERRY BRIESATH INSTRUCTOR OF THE YEAR AWARD By Keith Loria Scott Lee has been selected as the winner of this year’s PBIA Jerry Briesath Instructor of the Year Award. “Being chosen for this award is an immense honor,” Lee says. “I have always tried to demonstrate and represent professional skills (on and off the pool table), dress, attitude, and communication, to position our profession as worthy of notice, as much as the professional tournament players.” 52 | BCA INSIDER • EXPO 2019
“He’s probably within the top three instructors in the country and works with more students and instructors annually than anyone other than myself,” says Randy Goettlicher, former PBIA instructor committee chair and the winner of the award last year. “His program is excellent and the way he delivers it is second to none. He deserves this not just on his name, but his work record.” Even though Lee was Goettlicher’s student for 30 years, the mentor still gets
jealous listening to him at times, because of his complete dedication to the game. “He was an entertainer on the comedy circuit for years and would go to college campuses and spend 3-4 days entertaining the students and showing the pool fanatics more information and instruction, and that’s how I first ran across him,” Goettlicher says. “This is going back a long time, but he was one of the original APA league operators and his background is billiards.”
There is only one Master.
Often Imitated, Never Duplicated.
The two have been friends for a long time, and Goettlicher notes Lee is the perfect person to take home the award this year. “He’s got a really good outlook on amateur pool,” he says. “There are 21 million amateur pool players around us and there’s never going to be enough great instructors, so Scott and I are on a mission.” Gary Nelson, PBIA instructor committee chair, has known Lee for about five years and says he’s developed an expertise in the stroke and has defined his analysis and teaching through video.
“
in 1987, Montana State University in Bozeman, had a ‘real-deal’ pool class. If you wanted to learn how to play, you had the opportunity. Over the next 10 years it became one of the most popular courses on campus, and I taught 200-plus students every semester.” Lee decided to be a professional certified instructor because of his friend and mentor Jerry Briesath. “The first time I saw him teach I was mesmerized at his ease with his own skill as a teacher, as well as his easy-go-

“He does an excellent job of showing the student exactly the behavior of his arm, shoulder, elbow and wrist during the stroking phase of playing pool,” he says. Lee started playing pool while in college, and took professional lessons to up his game. “By the time I was in my early 20s, I was traveling all over the country playing for a living, never hustling and never dumping,” he says. “I have always loved teaching, as my father was a teacher of sorts. He was a recreation director.” Fast forward 15 years, and Lee decided to teach his first college billiards class, at his alma mater in Colorado. This was around 1977. “I was hooked and when I got a chance years later to move to Montana and teach a full-fledged semester course, I jumped at it,” Lee says. “Beginning 54 | BCA INSIDER • EXPO 2019
ing manner with everybody,” Lee says. “Jerry originally certified me into the program, and I was honored to be chosen, along with Mark Wilson and Jerry, to teach the BCA Summer Youth Cue Camp for the three years it was in play. Sarah Rousey came from those camps!” He considers himself fortunate to meet Goettlicher, a second mentor and Lee’s partner on the “teaching circuit.” “Some people know us as the Dynamic Duo of Teaching,” Lee says. “We have donated a week of free lessons at several of the national tournaments in Las Vegas for many years. It’s just one way to give back to the sport that has created so much happiness and success for us.” While he’s taught some of the great players in the game, he doesn’t like to hawk his instruction through their success. Instead, he would rather someone put a value on him as an instructor by
what his students have to say about him and how he teaches. “I give it my all, and my students feel that from me. I love what I do,” Lee says. “One of the things I am most proud of is taking a beginner all the way to becoming a national champion (Kevin Carlberg). That’s often a several year roller coaster experience, but it’s certainly worth it.” Teaching pool has been Lee’s life for most of the past five decades and there’s nothing he likes more than seeing the “light to go on” for a student. It isn’t unusual for Lee to give a private lesson on a holiday or even his own birthday. While most people start slowing down in their 60s, Lee continues to be a workaholic. In 2015, he held a threeday pool school in Oshkosh,Wisconsin, where the student/instructor ratio was nearly 1-1, with seven instructors (four Master Level) teaching nine students. “It was a huge success, and over the past couple of years I have formulated a new plan for teaching nationwide,” Lee says. “I am launching The SPF (Set-PauseFinish) National Pool School Tour. We will be holding very exclusive four-day pool schools in 12 cities all across the USA. The pool school tour, presented by Predator and other sponsors, and featuring the Predator Revo line of cues, will be held in upscale pool rooms in many states.” The tour starts in September in Seattle at the brand-new Golden Fleece Billiards in Everett, and then moves to the hot new room in Chicago, Surge Billiards and Coffee Bar in October. RESEARCH REPORT SHOWS JULY MOST FAVORABLE MONTH FOR BCA EXPO By BCA Insider Staff Marketing General Inc. recently performed a study on behalf of the Billiard Congress of America, looking to identify the best time of year to hold its annual trade show. It also sought out opinions of some other issues the BCA was interested in learning about. “The biggest takeaway was that people were overwhelmingly in favor of July, or at the very least, a summer month,” says Matt Kerr, market research manager for MGI. For retailers, July was chosen as the month most wanted to see the BCA
Expo take place in by 35 percent of respondents, with June coming in second at 12 percent. May and August were both chosen by 10 percent of respondents. For manufacturers and dealers, July was picked as the top choice by 38 percent of respondents, with June the next popular at 18 percent. March and April both registered 11 percent.
“What we saw were some very definitive numbers,” Kerr says. “While there had been talk that spring might have been more preferable for some, there was nothing to back that up. People like the summer months because it’s easier to fit in their schedules.”
When it came to combinations, July was the first choice with June as second choice was the most popular response, with 51 percent of retailer/dealer respondents and 60 percent of manufac-
The only difference between retailers and manufacturers is the preferred second-choice month as retailers and dealers would prefer June while manufacturers and distributors would prefer August.

“Among retailers/dealers surveyed, 70 percent said they would attend if the BCA Expo was held during their preferred month, though 79 percent said they would if it was in July,” Kerr says. “Manufacturers/distributors were nearly as enthusiastic with 62 percent saying they would exhibit if the Expo was held during their preferred month.” The study involved MGI sending 1,740 emails to BCA members and billiard retailers, dealers, and manufacturers, with about 16 percent completing the survey. Only one response per organization was included. Current and past exhibitors were given the opportunity to confidentially provide the names of retailers to be surveyed. When answering on behalf of their current company, 62 percent of retailers/ dealers said that their organization has attended a BCA Expo in the past five years, while 67 percent of manufacturers noted that their organization has attended a BCA Expo in the past five years. Of those, 57 percent of attending organizations purchased four or more booths for exhibition. Kerr says the survey audience included mostly decision makers at the compa-
ny with 95 percent of retailers/dealers and 96 percent of manufacturers/ distributors are at least one of several decision makers in their organizations who decide whether to attend or exhibit at a BCA Expo.
WHAT THEY’RE LOOKING FOR The MGI survey also revealed that retailers/dealers want to see new products at the show and manufacturers and distributors want to exhibit new products.
Program will now include Best Design and Best in Show awards to go along with the Most Innovative Product award. And in 2019, more companies are participating than ever before. The 2019 Expo will also feature more than 17 new exhibitors.
EXPO BEHAVIORS The MGI study also revealed that 53 percent of retailers/dealers do some buying at the BCA Expo, and an additional 5 percent do their buying mainly at the Expo.
“Retailers are influenced by two main factors when deciding whether to attend an Expo, the ability to learn about and see new products (43 percent) and the location of the BCA Expo (42 percent),” Kerr says. “Manufacturers/distributors care most about maintaining the company’s brand image (36 percent) and introducing new products (33 percent) when deciding whether to attend.”
“The takeaway here is for most people, they are buying at the Expo,” Kerr says. “Roughly half are doing some sort of buying, so even if they do some and buy later in the year, they are learning about the items at the Expo.”
They will get their wish this year as the BCA Expo has expanded its innovative new product competition to three categories. The New Products Showcase
COST FACTORS
Purchasing Schedule (Retailers/Dealers)
The data also showed that 51 percent of manufacturers/distributors do some selling at the BCA Expo, while an additional 5 percent sell mainly at the Expo.
When looking at the cost of the Expo in the study, MGI found that 63 percent of retailers/dealers said that a change in cost would have some influence on their decision to attend a future BCA Expo. Meanwhile, 66 percent of manufacturers/distributors say that a change in cost would have at least some influence on whether they would exhibit at a future BCA Expo as well. “The gist of it is that cost would be somewhat of a factor but not the only factor,” Kerr says. “When we asked this question, we didn’t ask how much they would be willing to pay, as we didn’t want to ask a leading question.” Learn more about the results of the survey during the BCA annual General Membership Meeting on Thursday morning at 8:00 am in Grand Ballroom B.

SUPPORT THE NEXT GENERATION AT THE JUNIOR NATIONALS By Keith Loria The 31st annual Junior National 9-Ball Championships presented by Iwan Simonis will be held at the South Point Hotel Casino and Spa in Las Vegas, July 23-27, in conjunction with the BCA Expo. The event will allow top young cueists to compete for academic scholarships, prizes and an opportunity to represent North America at the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) World Junior
9-Ball Championships. Aryana Lynch, a 15-year-old junior player from Allen, Texas, came in first place in the 16U Girls, 2018 BEF Junior Nationals and is excited to be coming back again to compete. “It was a great experience because it’s a place where I could play with other juniors and make friends,” Lynch says. “It also allowed me the opportunity to
qualify for the Junior World Championship in Russia and play with other juniors from around the world.” While in New Orleans for the BEF tournament last year, Lynch also took first place at Dr. Cue’s Artistic Pool Championships with the highest ever score among any junior, amateur or professional player, making her the world title holder.
Kaiden Hunkins, a 17-year-old from Waukesha, Wisconsin, will be playing in his ninth Junior Nationals this year. Last year, he finished first in the Boys 16 and Under division. “This has been such a valuable experience for Kaiden, because Junior Nationals has also provided an opportunity to attend Worlds,” says his mother, Monica Paz. “We have had the ability to travel to Shanghai and Moscow.” Her favorite thing about Hunkins competing at the Junior Nationals is that it allows him to hang around other kids his age who love the sport. “We do not have a junior league in our area, so my son often finds himself playing strictly with adults,” she says. “My son has the best time these short 3-4 days. The relationships he has developed with the other juniors and the social media presence has allowed him to grow these friendships despite the juniors being all over the USA and world.” This year is the first time that the Billiard Congress of America will assume oversight of the Billiard Education Foundation, which is charged with the annual BEF Junior National 9-Ball Championships presented by Iwan Simonis. “With the recent partnership of the two organizations on the BEF Junior Nationals and Atlantic Challenge Cup, both organizations saw the benefit of joining together to promote the game of pool to a new generation of players,” says Brian Igielski, BCA’s chairman “We’ll look forward to continuing the momentum we’ve seen the industry express for our junior programs.” Other key programs of the BEF include the annual Junior State Qualifiers, annual selection and support of juniors competing in the WPA World Junior 9-Ball Championships, academic scholarship and awards, Pool in School programming and curriculum development, and junior instruction in part-
nership with the Professional Billiard Instructors Association.
SCHEDULE
“This partnership is a great addition to the ever-growing support we are dedicated to provide junior players and their parents,” says Tom Riccobene, BEF’s former president “Across America, in this the foundation’s 31st anniversary year, more teachers and coaches than ever now recognize that playing pool promotes positive growth in social, cognitive and physical skills. On behalf of these professionals, as well as our fantastic group of volunteers and trustees, we want to thank the BCA for their commitment to helping us each and every day to promote, operate and grow our junior programs.”
Tues., July 23
Another partnership between the BCA and BEF is the Atlantic Challenge Cup, a Mosconi Cup-style event for junior players, began in 2015 when the European Pocket Billiard Federation and the BCA teamed to promote junior pool. Two teams consisting of four boys and two girls represent Europe and America and do battle annually. This year’s Atlantic Challenge Cup will be held around Thanksgiving in Treviso, Italy. True American Made Quality
Stabilizers on the VBP weight system drastically reduce vibration that is inherent in traditional cues.
11 NEW MODELS!
Your struggle to get a perfectly-balanced cue is officially over.
FEATURING OUR NEW
Introduced in 2019, our H-Series is the first line of cues ever to feature the fully-adjustable Variable Balance Point (VBP) weight system. This breakthrough is made possible by our patented new technology that combines a full-length carbon fiber core with a rail on which the weights can be repositioned forward or backward inside the cue. No other cue allows you to have this much control over both the weight and balance.
ENGAGE BUTT PLATE SYSTEM
Standard on the H-Series is the newly-engineered Engage butt plate system, which features an internal threaded construction. This allows you to easily remove the bumper and access the VBP weight system. The Engage butt plate system is also compatible with our Engage Cue Extension that can be twisted into place in just one full turn.
Visit BOOTH 1003 to see all 11 of our new H-Series cues!
