LOUISIANA LIGHTNING BUSINESS SENSE AND CORE PRINCIPLES HAVE MADE INDOOR RECREATION A SUCCESS

By Anthony Stoeckert Jonathan Goudeau makes it sound easy.

As he talks about his store, Indoor Recreation in Lafayette, Louisiana, he speaks with good humor and a good amount of pride. For nearly 30 years, Indoor Recreation has been a destination for people who love billiards and other games.

“We pretty much do anything for the man cave,” Goudeau says. “From pool tables, shuffleboard, air hockey, table tennis, bars, bar stools, anything you can imagine for the game room.”

IT STARTED IN A GARAGE Goudeau got his start in the billiard business by working for his father, who for 65 years was in the commercial end of the billiard business. Goudeau was a parts manager and ran a route for his dad.

“After nine years of working for him, I branched off on my own and went into just strictly the retail side of it,” he says. “And I’ve been doing that for 27 years now.”

He saw there was a market and demand for home recreation based on feedback he got while working for his father, so Goudeau decided to get into the retail side of things.

“My father didn’t want to branch out to that side of it, so I did it on my own,” he says. “Actually, I started out in the garage of my house the first year. I had a small route at the time to off-set expenses and to have an income coming in. For the next five years, I was in a retail strip mall, and after outgrowing that, I moved into a

physical location that I built myself, and I’m still there today.”

That wasn’t a strategy to survive a recession, it’s just the way he does business.

His business was mostly a commercial route. At first, his garage was home to supplies and was the base for the service and repair side of his operation.

That represented the majority of his business, with some sales via catalog.

“I’ve always worked it that way,” Goudeau says. “I didn’t bite off more than I could chew and we didn’t try to operate beyond our means. We depended on the manufacturers bearing the supply at their warehouse and then as needed, we would ship it in for the most part.We keep maybe a 25 percent stock, and everything else, we have to order.”

“You build a business, then we expanded into what we needed, a showroom floor,” he says. “We did that, and went from a 1,250-square-foot floor to a 5,500-square-foot showroom floor.”

KEYS TO SUCCESS His approach to business is smart and simple. During the rough economy, he stayed the course, doing things his way in Lafayette, about two hours from New Orleans. Goudeau says the keys to the city’s economy are oil fields and tourism.

“We really haven’t seen many challenges,” Goudeau says. “When the oil fields hit a slump, as did the rest of the nation, we noticed a small decline in revenue, but you streamline your inventory and do everything you can there; it doesn’t tend to hurt you as bad as trying to play catch-up. We kept everything on an even keel and did the best we could with what we had.”

BILLIARDS, AND MORE In addition to selling game tables, Indoor Recreation also services tables and sells pool cues, ball sets, cloth, racks, pub tables, arcade games, juke boxes, poker tables, bars, barstools and clocks. It offers pool tables of various price points, starting at $1,795 and hitting various price points up to custom-made tables.

Brands Indoor Recreation offers include Brunswick, Presidential Billiards, Connelly Billiards and Drawknife for custom tables. Pool table options include models in a classic, elegant style to contemporary black laminate models with chrome corner caps and trim.

Other tables are modern-looking and some are sleek.

The store also has everything needed to keep tables in top-notch condition, including cloth by Brunswick, Championship and Simonis. It also sells cues from manufacturers including 5280, Action, Athena, Lucasi, Outlaw, Players, Viking and many others.

Foosball is another popular game, and Indoor Recreation sells models

by Brunswick, Champion, Presidential and Tornado. There also are shuffleboard tables by Brunswick, Championship and Presidential; air hockey

by Brunswick, Dynamo, Presidential and others; and table tennis by Brunswick (including the Smash line) and Presidential.

There’s more to a man cave or game room than the games, so Indoor Recreation also sells bars, tables, and comfortable reclining chairs, so that guests can enjoy a few drinks between games. Also popular are games and furniture decorated with logos from customers’ favorite collegiate and pro football teams.

THE RIGHT STAFF It’s no surprise that the store is successful. In addition to great merchandise, customers get first-class treatment.

Their best was pretty good. Of course sales dipped during the worst of the economic slowdown but Indoor Recreation not only stayed in business, Goudeau says he never had to lay off an employee at a time when other stores were slashing jobs.

“I didn’t have a huge overhead of inventory, everything that I have here is all paid for,” Goudeau says. “We didn’t have that strong overhead that would typically have killed some of the businesses that have been around for a while because they overstocked and they couldn’t move it fast enough.”

Call or visit Indoor Recreation and you’ll get a friendly greeting from a knowledgeable and helpful staff member. In fact, when asked what some of his biggest challenges have been over the years, Goudeau doesn’t name commonly heard answers, but instead says the most important thing is hiring the right people.

“People say when you get into business for yourself, the hardest thing is taxes and taxes and taxes,” he says. “I would disagree with that, it’s employment.

This is a niche industry, so it’s hard to find someone with the skill set that you need. I would say employment issues is one of the most challenging things.

“Taxes, you know what they are,” he says with a laugh. “You know what they’re going to be or approximate, so that’s not hard for me to figure out.”

Success has come with his approach to business, especially when it comes to building customer relationships, from people making the smallest purchase, to the priciest table.

“You never can go wrong doing the right thing,” Goudeau says. “We take care of our customer base. We make sure they’re happy, and I try to treat them as though I want to be treated in situations. We resolve issues that may 10 | BCA INSIDER • EXPO 2018

come up to make sure customers are satisfied and happy.”

And based on how the store’s customer base is growing, it definitely seems a lot of people leave Indoor Recreation happy and satisfied, and they make sure to spread the word.

“Sixty percent of our business is word of mouth, so we do minimal advertising, so 60 percent word of mouth is tremendous for us,” Goudeau says. “We have excellent customer service and our focus is on quality customer service.”

FINDING THE RIGHT HOME Indoor Recreation has been in its current home at 211 Rue Louis XIV in Lafayette since 1996. Goudeau owns the building as opposed to leasing and also designed the building, and hired a contractor to do the actual construction.

When the store first opened, it not only sold billiard equipment, but also hosted league play.

“The back portion of it was for leagues and exhibitions,” Goudeau says. “We did junior leagues every Tuesday night, which was for the high schools. Thursday nights we did a league under the

BCA program at the time. Every now and then, we’d have pros come in and do some exhibitions. From there, we outgrew the demand, so I shut that back part down, and that became a warehouse and half of that became showroom floor.”

That back room was not a pool hall that was open for public use. Goudeau describes it as an “exhibition hall.” But the showroom was open to the public, for sales, repair, service work, deliveries and moving tables.

When it comes to Indoor Recreation’s customer base, Goudeau says there’s a lot of variety.

“It’s multi-faceted,” he says. “Pretty much any age group comes in. I would say for people purchasing pool tables, it’s typically people 25 and up through around 60. It varies on their income.

We sell to a lot of pool halls, selling them supplies and cues, though our bread and butter is the equipment and the pool table sales.” But most of the store’s business is for people buying billiard equipment and other games and elements for game rooms.

GIVING CUSTOMERS WHAT THEY WANT While pool tables form the core of Indoor Recreation’s business, the store has had success with other table games, and one trend lately is an increase in table tennis sales.

“This past year, ping-pong was a big hit,” Goudeau says. “Our biggest dropoff has been air hockey; there’s less interest in air hockey and more interest in ping-pong and foosball this year. Last year was an increase from the year prior, and so far this year is poised to be better than last year.”

One new development businesses have needed to take on in recent years is social media, and Goudeau and his staff have made a presence in that area. It’s

a way to share information about the store, including promoting new merchandise and advertising sales. It also offers a direct way to communicate with customers, and other people in the industry.

“The last two years, we have been really marketing our Facebook page tremendously, we get a lot of hits there,” Goudeau says. “We do a lot of promotions on there, and now we’re navigating to the Instagram side of things.”

Also important to Goudeau is his work with Billiard Congress of America, and this year’s Expo is particularly exciting as its taking place in New Orleans, just a few hours from his store.

“I stay involved with the BCA as much as possible – roundtables, attending the conventions every year,” he says. “You get good ideas from what you hear from other dealers out there as far as what’s working for them. I take some of their ideas back and try to implement them, and some ideas I share, and they try them, too. Staying involved has been big for me and it’s an important part of our success.”

A NEW LOOK Goudeau has been in the billiard business for decades, and Indoor Recre-

ation has been in its current location since 1996, but you wouldn’t know it to visit the store. There’s more to keeping up with the times than offering the most popular games and staying on top of technology. And few things are sadder than a worn-out store in need of a makeover, so Goudeau and his staff recently remodeled the store to give it a spiffy makeover.

“I think it’s important to stay fresh, give customers a new look when they come in, as often as possible,” Goudeau says, adding that he was indeed wearing painting clothes during the interview for this story. “In the 27 years I’ve been opened, this is going to be our third facelift.”

Of course, that means painting, but it also means more, including adding a look that fits the latest trends in game rooms.

“I try to stay current; the rustic look is in, so we’re changing some of the floors to laminate wood floors instead of carpet,” Goudeau says. “Most of it will remain carpet, but we’re changing the color scheme, the positioning of our equipment on the showroom floor, that’s helping a lot as well too. Lighting also is important.”

It’s just one part of his efforts to keep Indoor Recreation at its best. And once the renovations were finished, it was back to the core practices that have made Indoor Recreation the success that it is.

“If you don’t stay on top of it, your competitors will,” Goudeau says. “I try to stay fresh and give it a new look. After that, the staff is important, to give customers a proper greeting.”

And that’s the approach that has paid off for Indoor Recreation in many ways.

COMPETING IN THE JUNIOR NATIONALS

By Keith Loria In conjunction with the BCA Expo, the Billiard Education Foundation will be holding its 30th Annual Junior National 9-Ball Championships July 10-14, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.

The event is the only junior contest in the U.S. that qualifies young players to compete at the World Pool-Billiard Association World Junior 9-Ball Championships.

“Any time you have an opportunity for kids to participate on a national stage, it’s a great thing,” says Roy Pastor, PBIA Master Instructor, who has been sending kids to the Junior Nationals for 14 years. “The kids look forward to this all year long.”

The national championships boast eight divisions: 18 & Under Boys, 16 & Under Boys, 14 & Under Boys, 11 & Under Boys (non-world-qualifying division), 18 & Under Girls, 16 & Under Girls, 14 & Under Girls, and 11 & Under Girls (non-world-qualifying division). The three upper age divisions for both boys and girls will also all be World Qualifiers.

Here are some of the competitors ready to compete in 2018.

MICHELLE JIANG, AGE 17 BCA INSIDER: What does this tournament mean to you?

JIANG: Being part of this tournament is a step in promoting this sport, especially among juniors. It might not seem like a single person participating in a tournament would have much effect, but it really is a collective effort. The sight of more than 100 junior players practicing and playing with each other is something that can really help the sport as a whole. This tournament is also an awesome learning experience, and it’s really just been great to see the event grow over the past couple of years.

BCA INSIDER: What are you looking forward to most about playing at this year’s Junior Nationals?

JIANG: Playing pool with friends I’ve made at previous Junior National tournaments.

BCA INSIDER: How many of these have you participated in before and how are you preparing for this year’s tournament?

JIANG: This is my sixth Junior Nationals. I’ve been practicing, as usual, and have played in some local tournaments for practice. I’ve also been working on my break, trying to get it more consistent, which has been one of my weaknesses in past years.

TY BLOWERS, AGE 14 BCA INSIDER: What are you looking forward to most about playing at this year’s Junior Nationals?

BLOWERS: I am proud to represent Wyoming and to test myself against other players from different states, playing other good players that aren’t adults. Most of my tournaments, I play the adults.

BCA INSIDER: How many of these have you participated in before and how are you preparing for this year’s tournament?

BCA INSIDER: What are you looking forward to most about the Junior Nationals?

BLOWERS: This is my second Nationals, though I have qualified three years in a row. I practice at least five hours a day before a tournament. I also play against good adult players that I know.

LIU: I’m really looking forward to meeting all the friends that I have made in the previous years and catching up with them.

In addition, I also look forward to visiting somewhere that I've never been before.

BCA INSIDER: How many of these have you participated in before and how are you preparing for this year’s tournament?

BCA INSIDER: What does it mean to you to be part of this tournament?

LIU: This year, I’m preparing just as I usually would. I try to increase my practicing time and focus my attention more on playing pool rather than school. This isn't my first Junior National tournament, I’ve been to three before this.

HENDERSON: I have been playing pool since I was 7 years old and could reach over the table. To be a part of any tournament is an accomplishment whether you win or lose.

BCA INSIDER: What are you looking forward to most about the Junior Nationals?

HENDERSON: Meeting people from around the country and outside of the country and learning about other parts of the world instead of plain old Iowa.

HENDERSON: I have played in the Junior Nationals three times.

I’m having fun building my game up and meeting other people that I can learn from.

LIU: To be able to play in this tournament means a lot to me.

It means that I get to play amongst the best juniors in the nation, which is a really big honor in and among itself, but I also get to get to meet new people who enjoy doing the same things as I do.

TOP 10 MUSIC DESTINATIONS AROUND NEW ORLEANS

By Charles S. Donnavan Once the events and activities unwind at the BCA Expo, you’ll want to be sure to check out the amazing music that the city is known for. After all, New Orleans is the birthplace of jazz and is widely known as having one of the best music scenes in the world.

Regardless of whether you enjoy an intimate club or large hall, New Orleans never disappoints music lovers. Here are some places you should visit to hear some of the city’s finest musicians doing their stuff.

PRESERVATION HALL

726 St Peter St.

You can’t call yourself a jazz fan and not stop by this historic site. Encompassing traditional New Orleans jazz, the venue is considered a cornerstone of music and culture. First established in 1961 to honor traditional New Orleans jazz, the site plays host to some of the city’s best jazz players nightly. The popular bar hosts a variety of musical performances, including gospel, hip-hop, bluegrass and rock. The best aspect of Preservation Hall is its non-profit affiliation. CHICKIE WAH WAH

Originally established in 2000, Chickie Wah Wah was one of the first in the city to offer a smoke-free atmosphere and its mission is to create a healthy environment for guests, staff and its guest musicians. The establishment is located in the historic Fauburg Mariginy and offers local and regional acts nightly. The room adapts to bands of different sizes and welcomes different styles. Every musical artist sets the entrance fee for the night, so there’s a revolving cover, but it’s money well spent, and the artists collect 100 percent of the proceeds.

That makes the venue a welcome home for rising and established musicians.

MAPLE LEAF BAR

A slightly different musical choice, Maple Leaf Bar is actually home to two types of artistic events – musical performances and poetry readings. Known by locals as “The Leaf,” it’s a top place

for New Orleans’ up-and-coming bands and local music students from Tulane University, Loyola University and The University of New Orleans to shine. Frequent performers at the Maple Leaf have included local legends James Booker, the Rebirth Brass Band, Papa Grows Funk, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Walter “Wolfman” Washington, “Money Mike” Armstrong, The Radiators and Henry Butler. Unannounced sit-ins are not uncommon; Bruce Springsteen once dropped in to jam with The Iguanas and Jon Cleary’s band was once joined by his frequent employer, Bonnie Raitt.

SNUG HARBOR JAZZ BISTRO 626 Frenchmen St. For more than 30 years, Snug Harbor has provided the best in live jazz and great regional cooking at reasonable prices. The venue is comprised of three rooms of a renovated 1800s storefront located in the Faubourg Mariginy, just outside the French Quarter. Snug Harbor has been home to most major modern New Orleans jazz musicians. In its space, young musicians gain real-world

music experience from veteran bandleaders. Be warned, the venue is only able to host 80 people but though the stage is small, it can hold a grand piano and large bands have played on it. Every night, patrons can witness two shows, at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.

TIPITINA’S UPTOWN

501 Napoleon Ave.

Originally established in 1977, Tipitina’s has encouraged the development of New Orleans’ best musical artists for decades. Located near the Mississippi River, the bar is dedicated to piano wizard Professor Longhair, one of the most renowned rhythm and blues musicians in New Orleans’ music history. His visage overlooks the stage and greets guests at the door. Tulane University and Loyola University music students frequent the music club. Tipitina’s also support a variety of community-based projects.

HOUSE OF BLUES

225 Decatur St.

This popular music venue grew out of founder Isaac Tigrett’s love for the blues and it’s considered a must-stop for any true music lover who comes to the Big Easy. Tigrett’s goal with the place was to introduce people to the music of the rural south, including genres such as blues, gospel, rhythm and blues and jazz. Bands play nightly and the House of Blues offers a mix of Louisiana favorites and mid-sized touring acts. The club offers three performance spaces: the main hall, the Parish and the Voodoo Garden. The place is also known for its food, serving up a strong mix of Southern-style favorites.

BLUE NILE

532 Frenchmen St. Blue Nile is one of the longest-standing music clubs located in the heart of the historic Frenchmen Street. It was

originally called Dream Palace and it has been home to funk, blues, soul and brass music concerts. The club offers a full bar and features live local, national and international performances; they have music acts on most nights of the week. Renowned artists like Kermit Ruffins, Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews and Soul Rebels Brass Band have played here.

BULLET’S SPORTS BAR

The Treme neighborhood is a historic incubator for New Orleans’ many homegrown party sounds – funk, brassband music, R&B – and the laid-back Bullet’s rests in the heart of it. Acts like the raucous, all-female Original Pinettes Brass Band and trumpeter Kermit Ruffins play regular weekly gigs at Bullet’s, which usually start fairly early (between 6 and 9 p.m.) and attract a relaxed crowd of grown folks. Food trucks park outside during gigs, and drink specials are kind to the wallet.

ROCK ‘N’ BOWL

Located in the heart of New Orleans, Rock ‘n’ Bowl is a unique venue that promotes both live music and bowl-

ing. Due to its rustic Southern roots, the famous bar and bowling alley tends to have a full house every night, so if you’re looking to bowl while you listen to music, make sure you reserve your lane before you get there. Every night brings new live entertainment, ranging from funk to blues to zydeco. Get ready to dance the night away while sipping on some beers and knocking down a few pins. Even owner John Blancher, a bona fide local character, likes to climb up on the bar and boogie down at least once an evening.

SIBERIA

2227 St Claude Ave. Looking for something a little different? Every night, Siberia hosts punk, hardcore and metal local bands, offering a change of pace from the jazz that dominates many of the bars and clubs.

This music club is perfect for anyone who wishes to break away from the typical Southern-style music scene.

Over the years, the club has expanded to include regular gigs from gay bounce rappers Katey Red and Big Freedia, touring veterans Hawkwind and Walter Lure, psychedelic rock, goth DJs, comedy, and burlesque, plus free happy hour shows for local singer-songwriters and old-timey string bands.

With all of that in mind, we’ve talked with social media experts for their insights on what to do, and what not to do, with social media. These tips can be put to good use while at the Expo, and throughout the year.

Make sure that everyone is smiling in your photos, share the idea that the BCA is a community, it will promote your business and the game in general. Not every post has to be about business – post pictures of the hotel, a meal you’ve had, the architecture of New Orleans, a beautiful sunset, musicians: everything that makes New Orleans great.

“Find a healthy number of times to post a day. The sweet spot for most brands is four to six posts a day,” says Morgan Kling, CEO of Market Boost, which connects brands with viral influencers to promote products, apps, and entertaining content. “Build a tone for your social media accounts that will resonate with your audience.”

“If billiard businesses targeted only 20- to 30-year-old men on social media, they’d really be missing the mark,” Sickler says. “Thirty percent of their customers are women, and the average age of billiard champions is 35.”

Kling suggests creating relationships with your followers, but not through spam. “When people engage with your posts, show some love. A heart emoji goes a long way,” he says.

He also suggests doing some research to learn and find out what kind of posts are popular with your followers. “Learn what your audience engages with,” Kling says. “Find some popular pages in the same industry and see which of their posts get the best engagement. Curate more of that content.”

“Each platform has a different vibe,” Kling says. “Learn what it is and stick to it. Don’t take the easy way out by using recycled content.”

Chelsey Heil, owner of Creatives by Chelsey, a marketing agency in Stockton, California, says billiard retailers have lots of opportunities to “blow up” their social media.

“Have you ever seen the trick shot videos on YouTube? They get millions of views because they’re interesting,” Heil says.

“They hold people’s attention and we all like watching those videos.”

She suggests making your own videos featuring trick shots, coaching tips, ways to properly care for a table and other equipment, and videos showcasing tables and other merchandise.

“I’d also make simple memes with quotes like, ‘I’d rather be playing pool’ or something like that,” Heil says. “It may sound cheesy, but it works. Post these to both Facebook and Instagram, use hashtags on Instagram and your social media will explode.”

When it comes to social media, people like things short and sweet. If you’re promising people a video of a terrific trick shot, get to it quickly. Of course, you can take a few seconds to tell people about yourself and your business, and introduce the player who’s making the shot. But then get to the shot. You also can talk with the player after the shot is made. Once they see the shot, a lot of people will want to keep watching to find out how it was done. Apply this approach to all videos.

By Keith Loria Attendees of past Billiard & Home Leisure Expos often talk about the innovative ideas and insights they received from the numerous education seminars presented throughout the conference, and this year’s seminars promise to be equally strong.

Lynn Switanowski, president of Creative Business Consulting Group, LLC, will present two seminars at this year’s Expo: “Doing Brick And Mortar Business In An Online World” beginning at 1 p.m. on July 11; and “20 Seconds to WOW and WIN” on July 12 beginning at 3 p.m.

The first session focuses on how to use social media in one’s billiard business.

“This year we focus on ‘doing brickand-mortar business in an increasingly online world’ and will share tips, tactics and ways that billiard businesses can connect digitally with their customers,” Switanowski says.

CBCG’s second session focuses on the visual merchandising within billiard businesses.

“We are trying to help billiard business owners understand that looks do matter, and spending time and energy – and sometimes a few dollars – can significantly improve the performance of their businesses and better meet today’s customer needs,” she says.

Switanowski is excited that this year CBCG will add an additional element

to the BCA Expo, as it will be on the show floor for five hours in the social and digital lounge, providing guidance and talking with billiard businesses who have specific challenges and issues with their social media presentations.

These sessions are from 2 to 5 p.m., on Wednesday and from 1 to 3 p.m. on Thursday.

“We hope that many show attendees will take advantage of this free opportunity to improve their social media presence and connect more effectively with their customers,” she says.

Brian Offenberger, owner and keynote speaker of CeM out of Scottsdale, Arizona, will be presenting the seminar “Top Converting Websites” on Wednesday, July 11 at 3 p.m.; and “10 Tips for Better Business Results” at 1 p.m., Thursday, July 12.

“One is about how to turn more website visitors into customers and the second is about how to generate better business results,” he says. “I enjoy helping business owners rediscover the joy and passion in their business and helping them lead their business to better results.”

For the first session, Offenberger says attendees can expect practical tips they can use to turn more website visitors into actual paying customers, providing real-life examples to illustrate easy-toapply website principles to get more customers and make more sales.

“This is important because you can have all the website visitors in the world, but if none of them buy from you, it’s wasted traffic,” he says. “This session teaches in an easy-to-understand, easy-to-apply way, the concepts to turn website visitors into customers.”

The chief takeaway of the seminar is that simple improvements can make big profit differences.

“It’s so important to view and understand your website performance analytics every month, just like you would

your bank and financial statements,” Offenberger says. “The best part of doing a seminar like this is seeing people’s eyes light up and get excited when they understand that they too can earn more and produce more from their website.”

For the “10 Tips for Better Business Results” session, Offenberger says attendees can expect to get some practical tips any business can apply – from startup to enterprise level – for better business results.

“This is important because if you aren’t in business for fun or profit, then why are you doing it? This session shows the importance of fun and profit, and how to have more of both,” he says.

“Remember, you are the magic in your business. How you run is how your business will run. Like a fine machine, you must take care of you.”

A pool room specific education session will take place on Thursdsy, July 12 beginning at 11 a.m., called “The Pool Room of Tomorrow.” In this seminar, Ozzy Reynolds, general manager at CueSports International and BCA’s room operator representative, will lead a roundtable discussion on ways to improve business for this segment.

“We felt it was important for each category of BCA board members to host a roundtable for their constitutes, and mine represents room owners and league operators,” Reynolds says. “For this session, I’d like to get that segment of the membership together and let them know what the BCA is doing and making them aware of everything going on, as well as get their thoughts on how the BCA can give them more value for their membership.”

He notes that all BCA members are welcome to join in on the discussion and the format will be informal, but he believes it will be highly educational for all involved.

“We’re going to touch on all the different initiatives and ideas and maybe get

into some they are considering for the future,” he says. “We’ll let everyone have some time to voice opinions on how the BCA can give them more value.”

Currently, this segment of the BCA represents one of the smallest memberships and Reynolds shares the board is trying to generate ideas to attract more room owners and more league operators to become members.

“For current members, I want them to walk away with the feeling that the BCA is aware of their needs and that we do listen,” he says. “Additionally, we want to hear their ideas. They may have far better ideas than we have as board members and we’re always willing to listen and hear what everyone has to say.”

The husband-and-wife team presents a bold cuisine set in an atmosphere that’s inspired by the fishing, farming, and hunting culture they grew up in. The menu, which features modern takes on Acadian and Cajun cuisine, includes Deviled Crab with whipped egg yolk, marinated cucumber and sabayon; Alligator & Mirliton with honey powder, white remoulade and pickled mustard seeds; and Wild Boar’s Heart – a bell pepper risotto-stuffed heart with maple sherry Brussels and shaved beet. WHAT DOES THE “LOOK” OF YOUR BUSINESS SAY?

By Lynn Switanowski The world of retail has changed and what visually attracts customers during an online search (which most importantly then prompts them to walk in to your billiard store/pool hall) has changed dramatically over the last five years. The question is, have you noticed these changes in your customers and adapted visual changes inside your billiard business to better meet your customers’ needs?

Attracting today’s customers to your billiard business and enhancing the visual presentation in order to attract more of them to your business can be thought of like a good book. There are three parts that must be created to engage your customers and keep them entertained while shopping at your store.

Let’s dive into the visual merchandising “book” for your billiard business.

PART 1: START WITH A GOOD “COVER” FOR YOUR BOOK As a retailer, your book cover is your storefront identity, which includes the parking lot, sidewalks and the front windows of your billiard business.

This “cover” for your billiard business serves to create a positive and lasting first impression of your business. Ask yourself, when is the last time you did anything to update the outside of your business including signage, window displays, entrance areas (including canopies and or lettering) that may be more visually distinctive?

road to your business and you will be able to share these updates online and attract customers who are searching for a billiard business to shop/play at.

(This would be via your digital marketing tools including your website, social media and email programs.)

PART 2: EVERY BOOK NEEDS AN INTERESTING FIRST CHAPTER The second part in our book analogy is to create an interesting first chapter.

Think of this as the initial impression when customers walk into your business. What your business looks like as customers initially walk in will confirm that they have made the right choice by heading to your business because of what it looks like. When reviewing the first chapter of your billiard business, think about creating interesting and unique displays that are easy to shop for at the front entrance. Make sure that the displays are engaging and well organized.

PART 3: YOUR BOOK ISN’T COMPLETED WITHOUT A SATISFYING CONCLUSION The third part and final part of a good book (and in this case a good experience at your billiard business) is for the reader (your customer) to come to a satisfying conclusion, which leads the audience to want more. In the case

of your billiard business, this means creating some sort of promotional tool that allows your customer to feel good about their experiences and makes them want them to come back again and again. Think about some sort of loyalty program, which is well displayed at all areas, to remind them how much fun they had.
