The Billiard Congress of America will again be hosting the BCA Industry Social on Wednesday after the exhibit hall closes. During the Industry Social, we will also announce this year’s BCA President’s Award recipient, and while I don’t want to give away any secrets too early, I’m confident everyone will recognize and honor this individual’s dedication to our game and industry.

This year, we will also be hosting a Professional Billiard Instructors Association social on Thursday evening. This is the 25th anniversary of the BCA’s instructor program, and as such we want to recognize our instructors for their contribution to the industry. Plus, we will be announcing an inaugural PBIA Instructor of the Year Award.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE ATLANTIC CHALLENGE CUP Charles S. Donnavan The top junior players from the U.S. and Europe faced off in the Sports Stadium in Klagenfurt, Austria for the third annual Atlantic Challenge Cup, July 5-7.

The Mosconi Cup-style battle between junior teams representing the Billiard Congress of America and the European Pocket Billiard Federation produced some awe-inspiring pool playing, with Team Europe taking home its third-straight trophy with an impressive overall score of 11-2.

Team USA was represented by April Larson, Sierra Reams, Shane Wolford, Nathan Childress, Manny Perez and Ricky Evans. Earl Munson and Johnny Archer served as captains.

Team Europe was comprised of Patrick Hofmann, who took home MVP honors for the tournament, Kristina Tkach, Diana Khodjaeva, Maksim Dudanets,Wiktor Zielinski and Daniel Maciol. The team’s captains were Albin Ouschan and Tomas Brikmanis.

Zielinski pocketed the decisive 9-ball in a scotch doubles match between Zielinski and Diana Khodjaeva vs. Manny Perez and April Larson. Results for the final day also saw wins for Dudanets/Tkach over Evans/Larson; Hofmann/Khodjaeva over Wolford/Reams; Zielinski over Perez; and Maciol over Childress.

“Our team came here with a lot of experience already,” says Ouschan. “The team is really strong. They have won many titles at European Championships so far and I knew I had a great team.”

The American squad actually scored the first point of the tournament on Day 1. The match consisted of all six players from each team playing against one another, and even though the Europeans were ahead 5-2 after seven racks, the American team fought their way back into the match to tie.

Wolford went up against Zielinski in the deciding match and came away the victor, putting the Americans in front at the time, 1-0.

However, Team Europe finished the day 2-1 after a triple match victory by Maciol, Zielinski and Khodjaeva over Wolford, Childress and Larson; and another triple win by Dudanets, Hofmann and Tkach over Evans, Perez and Reams.

On Day 2, Team Europe dominated their opponents, ending the evening with a 7-1 lead.

Polish born Zielinski and Maciol defeated Childress and Perez in a scotch double, while Tkach and Khodjaeva bested Larson and Reams in a girl’s scotch double in a very close match.

In single matches, Dudanets beat Evans; Hofmann dueled Wolford for a win; and then Tkach bested Larson in another close contest.

“I think it is important that players like myself compete in it because it is a great experience for any junior to have that type of pressure on them,” Larson says. “It is a very tough tournament, and you become part of a family by being a part of it.”

THE ROAD TO SUCCESS

By AlWilliams It’s a good thing he had to stop for gas. It’s a good thing he looked in the phone book. And it’s a good thing he found a listing in those trusty but now-gone yellow pages.

But they did happen, and Fodor Billiards is thriving. Here’s the backstory:

If none of those things had happened back in 1975 – if Bill Fodor hadn’t made a trip to California, then headed toward Mexico, and stopped at a gas station in San Diego – then Fodor Billiards & Barstools in Colorado may not exist today.

Fodor grew up in Trinidad, a small Colorado town of 12,000 people that is situated along the Santa Fe Trail. He started shooting pool in junior high school, and continued with the sport in high school and college. He became an industrial arts teacher, which turned out to be a nice fit with his love of billiards.

And even if it did exist, Fodor may not look like it does today.

It may not have three thriving locations, each staffed by family who sell billiard equipment, barstools and shuffleboards not just for the money, but for the mission.

“I enjoyed the woodwork aspect of the pool tables,” says Fodor, who was prompted to put that passion and fascination to work by the rowdiness of the kids he was teaching. “I spent a lot of time dealing with that.”

He decided to change careers and took a job with ACE Billiards of Denver, which needed someone with hands-on expertise to work on tables. Fodor fit, and with that, he transformed from a tech teacher to a billiards mechanic.

one for a deeper and longer-lasting reason. On a whim, Bill opened the phone book at the gas station and looked up billiard manufacturers. He found one: a tiny advertisement for a then-small manufacturer called Olhausen Billiards.

For Fodor, the next few years with ACE became a classroom of sorts – a place where he learned, worked, and shaped his future. With ACE, Fodor absorbed the technical and business side of the sport he loved. He learned about tables – their construction, how to service them, and how to differentiate between a decent table and a valuable one. He learned about business: how to sell, how to serve the customer, and most of all, that he wanted a company of his own. “I wanted to be my own boss,” Fodor says. “That’s what prompted me to open my own store.”

Fodor decided to pay a visit to Olhausen, which was run by two brothers, Don and Butch. They were around Fodor's age – “We were all in our 30s at the time,” he says – and he got along well with the brothers. He was impressed by their work, too. The Olhausen tables were made of well-crafted oak; Fodor was intrigued. There were four models on display in the showroom, and Fodor bought them all. He rented a trailer, hooked it to his pickup, loaded in the tables, and hauled them back to Colorado.

In 1975, Fodor decided to do exactly that. He did not want to compete, however, with ACE. He had learned too much and felt too loyal to position himself head-on against the company that gave him his start. Instead, he moved. Fodor scraped together $13,000 – $7,000 of it a government-backed smallbusiness loan; the rest of it saved from his teaching days.

He found a small space to rent in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Grand Junction, which is located on the so-called “Western Slope” side of the Rockies, was thriving at the time.The oil shale boom of the 1970s drove the town’s economy, and made it a smart spot for Fodor to set up shop. Grand Junction was filled with people who were highly aspirational risk takers. They were willing to spend, and envisioned a rich future for themselves.

With that, Fodor became the first official Olhausen dealer outside the manufacturer’s family. This, according to Bill and his son Tony, was a defining moment for the Fodor family business: It set up what has become a 40-year-plus relationship with Olhausen. The two companies have grown together over the years, and the relationship with Olhausen has been vital to Fodor’s success.

“We ended up with the right manufacturer – that was pure fate,” Bill Fodor says. “It’s not just knowing the product, but

He put down a deposit on a 1,200-square-foot retail space, constructed his own western-style sign for his newly named store: Western Billiard Supply. Now, he just needed to stock the store. Primarily, he had to find some good pool tables. To do that, Fodor had to hit the road. He packed into his 1967 Chevrolet pickup with his brother Arthur and drove west. Fodor knew the Los Angeles area was loaded with pooltable makers, and he hoped to find one who would work with his new store. If he suspected this wouldn’t be easy, he was right. First, Fodor had to find a manufacturer whose product met his exacting standards, ones that were heightened by his background as a pool player, his appreciation for craftsmanship borne from his days as an industrial arts teacher, and his strong sense of the billiard business thanks to his training at ACE. Bill and Arthur visited a number of manufacturers in Southern California, but didn't reach a decision. They decided to head toward Mexico because they had heard Tijuana was a good spot to find the stained glass used in the construction of billiard lights.

En route to Tijuana, Bill and Arthur stopped at a gas station in San Diego. It's a smart thing to fuel up before heading over the border, of course, but this decision was a well-advised BCAINSIDER.COM | 11

having the right product. Everybody would love to be an Olhausen dealer.”

The Olhausen relationship has been a constant, but business success for the Fodors was not. It came, and came impressively, but not without stark challenges.

“I made a few bucks for a while,” recalls Fodor, “and then oil went bust.”

It did, and it was bad.The real-estate market in Grand Junction crashed, and with it, the economy tanked. “You could literally buy six houses in a row for $90,000,” Fodor says.

When this happened, around 1985, it put a deep freeze on Fodor’s business. “I didn’t sell anything for a year,” he says.

“My only jobs were moving tables.”

That, of course, was for people who were getting out of town. Fodor realized that if his business was going to survive, he too would have to get out of Grand Junction. “I had to either change occupations or move,” he says.

He knew how to change occupations, of course, and had a hands-on skillset that was surely transferable to other jobs.

But he liked owning a store, working for himself, and he had a true passion for pool. So Fodor made another key decision, one that was as vital as serendipitously stopping in San Diego for fuel and flipping open a phone book. With no small sense of reluctance, he packed his family and moved to Colorado Springs, where he would re-open a shop.

Colorado Springs was the logical choice, Fodor says, “because they didn’t have an Olhausen dealer.” Fodor would take that region, but this new store would have a new name, since Colorado Springs is on the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains and the word “Western” no longer fit. Fodor decided to use his family name for what would become a true family business: Fodor Billiards.

It was around this late-’80s to early-’90s timeframe that Fodor’s then-teenage sons,Tony and Dominic, began working

in the business. When Tony – who at 41 today, is the oldest – was in junior high, he was adept at installing and servicing pool tables. “Before I was 16,” Tony says, “my father would send me out with people who had driver’s licenses, and I would finish installing and leveling the tables.”

After he graduated high school in the early 1990s, Tony started working even more for his father. His hours were full-time, but his commitment wasn’t – yet. Tony was also attending college, but realized that the combination of going to school and working in the family business wasn’t right for him. “I tried to do college,” he says, “but realized it’s hard to go to college when you’re delivering pool tables in the busy season during the holidays.”

By 1994, Tony left college and worked just for his dad.

He did well, and in 1997, Bill came to his son with an opportunity: Olhausen was hoping that Fodor would take over its Denver territory, which would mean the family could open a retail location in the Mile High City. This would be a second location for Fodor, and the timing was good: He had a longtime and trusted manufacturing partner supporting him, and a young-adult son with a passion and talent for the business, and the need to commit to a life path. “My father asked me if I wanted to take it on full-time as a career,” he says.

Tony accepted. Fodor Billiards opened a second 4,500-squarefoot location in September of 1997. The economy was strong and business was booming. The family reach extended deeper in the early 2000s, when Bill's son Dominic, who is also a photographer and darts player, joined the business, as did Bill's daughter Christa, a serious pool player.

“It wasn't the plan to have them be part of it,” Bill says. “They fell into it, so to speak. Tony was in his early 20s when we opened the Denver store. Christa and Dominic both wanted to be part of the business. They could have gone their own way, but they wanted to be part of it.

“We have the usual squabbles, but the good thing with having the family is the trust and the desire. They care about selling

the products. We present ourselves as sincere and honest, we know the products well and care about the customer.”

That deep trust and commitment to the business, the product, and most of all, the customer, would prove vital in the coming years. With that Denver location, Fodor expanded its array of products to include a broad range of furniture for game rooms, as well as stools for kitchen counters and bars.

The company moved into a larger Denver location and, in 2007, opened a third showroom in northern Colorado, just outside Denver. That room, at 13,000 square feet – or more than 10 times the size of Fodor's original location – elevated the company's retail approach. “(It) gave us the ability to display more items, like home theater seating,” Tony Fodor says. “This also allowed us to display products in more of a home setting with individual vignettes, to give customers a better buying experience.”

Bill’s nephew Alex and Dominic’s wife Leigh had joined the business; things probably seemed great: three locations, lots of family, and an impressive approach to retail sales.

Then the recession struck. The 2008 economic downturn hit Fodor hard.

“We endured some tough times,” Tony Fodor says. “We shrank our staff to mostly family members working seven days a week and paying ourselves the bare minimum to help the business survive.”

The business did survive, and while it’s still run by family, there’s a near 50-50 ratio between Fodors and non-family employees. Along with eight employees who comprise four two-person crews, seven Fodors oversee the company’s three locations: Dominic and his wife Leigh run the Colorado Springs store; Tony and his uncle, Arthur Fodor, are in the northern Denver location; while Christa, who’s married name is Forst, and cousin Alex Fodor operate the southern Denver space. Bill, who’s now in his 70s, is still active and involved in all the locations.

Today, Fodor Billiards is still thriving as an Olhausen dealer, and also has a healthy business selling darts, shuffleboards, and a wide array of furniture.

Looking back, Tony Fodor believes that the company’s strong sense of customer service is what helped it push through the recession, and stay strong today.

“My father’s philosophy, which he instilled in all of us, is that the customer is spending a lot of money on what probably is one of the most expensive pieces in their house,” he says. “We need to make the process fun for them.”

THE JUNIOR NATIONALS ARE RETURNING TO VEGAS

By Anthony Stoeckert Without question the best pool at the BCA Expo will be played by teens.

The Billiard Education Foundation will host its 29th Annual Junior National 9-Ball Championships, Aug. 2-6 at the South Point Hotel Casino and Spa’s Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, coinciding with the BCA Billiard & Home Leisure Expo.

The BEF Junior Nationals is the only youth billiard event in the nation that qualifies student-athletes to compete in junior events. Earl Munson, the tournament’s director, says about 150 to 160 young players will compete in the tournament.

That’s not as many as last year. But there still will be an abundance of talent on view. “We’ll have a good turnout like we always do,” Munson says.

This year marks the third time the Junior National 9-Ball Championships will be played in Las Vegas. Two years ago, the tournament tied into the BCA Expo, and then a few years before that they piggybacked on the BCAPL Nationals.

The competitors come from all over the country. Players from more than 30 states will participate, and those players will have to have won a state tournament or qualifying tournament.

Munson says the level of play by these kids is sure to impress anyone who watches them.

“I always tell everybody, when you sit and watch ESPN and you see the pros, that’s impressive, but when you see these 12-, 13-, 14-year-old kids playing at the level that they do, that’ll really catch your eye,” he says.

These young players also represent the future of the game.

April Larson, a five-time champion, took second place in a pro event this year.

The players will compete for scholarships and prizes. They will compete in four divisions: 18 and under boys; 18 and under girls; 14 and under boys; and 14 and under girls.

Ricky Evans, 16, of St. Peters, Missouri, has competed in the tournament several times before and is the 2016 18 and Under Boys Champion. He’s a 14-and-under Junior Nationals champion, and a two-time Super Billiard Expo Junior Champion. His goal is to become a professional pool player.

“I think it’s a real good experience for kids under the age of 18 because it shows them how pool really is in the competition world,” Evans says of the Junior Nationals. “Maybe they’ve seen people play in bars before, but the Junior Nationals really open it up for them. There’s a lot of great competition for kids to feel like they’re playing at the professional level, where they have to dress up, buckle down and try their hardest.”

A fire led his family to moving to North Chesterfield,Virginia.

His new town had a pool hall, where he started taking lessons.

He may have been born with a talent for pool, but he says practice has helped make him the player he is.

“Some say I had it in me, but I think I had to work to get it too,” he says.

He says he would like to play professionally, but he’s also planning on going to college. He also plays another sport he has a passion for, basketball, and would like to play in the NBA. Childress says he is looking forward to this year’s tournament, and is proud to return as a champion.

“It was a great feeling because it was my second year in a row, and going undefeated in the tournament added to it,” Childress says.

His interest in pool started because his dad owned a pool hall in O’Fallon, a town outside St. Peters.

“That got me into it, so I started playing. I picked up a stick and learned as I went along,” Evans says.

His favorite player is Earl Strickland, because he is entertaining, in addition to being a great player.

“I feel that I’m on my way to hopefully becoming a pro, maybe I can play in the Mosconi Cup or something,” he says.

Nathan Childress of North Chester, Virginia, is playing in his third Junior Nationals, and is the defending 14 and under boys champion. He also won in 2015.

“It was nice to win two years,” says Childress, who went undefeated in last year's tournament. “It’s good competition with the kids in juniors.”

His other accomplishments in the game include winning the Virginia State 14 and under Junior Championship in 2015 and 2016. He was a top 10 finisher in the Junior World Shanghai in 2016 and a Top 16 finisher in the 2015 Junior World Shanghai.

His interest in pool started at a very young age.

“When I was like eight, my grandpa had a pool table, and my dad played pool,” he says.

25TH ANNIVERSARY FOR PBIA

By Keith Loria In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the PBIA (formerly the BCA Instructor Program), a reception will be held at the Billiard and Home Leisure Expo on Thursday, Aug. 3, beginning at 5:15 p.m.

At the reception, the PBIA will introduce its inaugural PBIA Instructor of the Year, just one of the many exciting things happening during the BCA Expo. Throughout the three days, there will also be demonstrations by noted instructors such as Bob Jewett, Tom Rossman and Mark Finkelstein.

In 2011, Rob Johnson, the Billiard Congress of America’s CEO, helped transition the PBIA into its own separate entity.

While still an asset of the BCA, Johnson decided to revamp the program and further the BCA's commitment to promote the benefits of seeking quality billiard instruction from PBIA instructors to pool players of all skill levels.

“We hold tightly to the belief that quality billiard instruction enhances an individual’s enjoyment of the game, which in turn creates life-long customers for all categories of the billiard industry,” Johnson says. “If you can teach an individual to play pool better, they’re going to enjoy the game more, introduce it to more players and they’re going to buy more product or go to the pool hall more.”

plan that could improve membership and benefit instructors as best as they could.

“The biggest benefit of the program is the education,” he says. “One of the big things we have done is incorporating the PBIA with the youth programs, and helping these kids get started and grow in competitions.”

As part of its new initiative, the PBIA created the website, playbetterbilliards.com, which offers detailed overviews on PBIA master instructors and PBIA pool schools, an “Ask an Instructor” Q&A section, an instructor locator and additional content designed to encourage pool play.

The site also provides information on becoming a certified PBIA instructor.

This year, the PBIA has made a commitment to offer background checks for its instructors.

“When they go through the background check, and they are verified, they receive the benefit on our website, both with a branding designation and they come up earlier in the search function,” Johnson says. “We also added this as a responsibility of instructors who work with junior players – they must have a background check.”

The PBIA has added about 75 new instructors since it launched the new initiative.

PBIA SCHEDULE WEDNESDAY, AUG. 2 Jerry Briesath, considered the “father” of the instructor program, has seen it grow from about 15 instructors to more than 200, and says the changes that have been made over the past six years have really been monumental.

“It’s nice to have the program associated with the governing body of the industry because it benefits the sport as a whole,” says Briesath, who works in Phoenix, Arizona in the winter and Wisconsin in the summer. “People can go to the website and find an instructor near them and get some quality training to learn how to play our sport. It’s done a great deal to promote billiards overall.”

Bob Jewett has been an instructor with the program since Day 1 and was co-editor of the Instructors Manual.

“The major benefit of having instructor training is that it begins to ensure that players are getting accurate, useful instruction,” he says. “They become better at the game, like it more and stick with it. The PBIA is also useful for connecting students with instructors.”

Fran Crimi has also been an instructor with the program since its inception.

“The BCA has always placed emphasis on maintaining credibility within the billiard industry. Maintaining an unbiased certification program for billiard instructors adds to credibility in our industry,” Crimi says. “Credentials mean that the person has taken his craft seriously and has fulfilled necessary requirements to be considered as an expert in his or her field. Knowing this puts clients more at ease in taking instructions from a credentialed instructor.”

Mark Finkelstein started instructing for the BCA/PBIA in 1996 and believes its major benefits are an established body of knowledge for best practices, a body of peers to share ideas with, and a training standard for all to follow.

“I believe that the instructor portion of the BCA is an important part because the better people can play cue sports, the more interest they will have in the game,” he says. “The quickest way to playing better is better fundamentals, and those are best learned through an organized and regulated instructor organization.”

HALL OF FAME WELCOMES TWO

By Keith Loria The Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame has elected one of the sport’s most enthusiastic ambassadors in “Dr. Cue” Tom Rossman, and also welcomed transplanted English 8-Ball star, three-time World Champion Darren Appleton, to its class of 2017.

Appleton enters in the Greatest Players wing of the BCA Hall of Fame, becoming the first British player to earn enshrinement.

“The honor to me is the pinnacle of anyone’s career,” Appleton says. “When I switched over from English 8-Ball to American pool in 2006, I never thought I would get in. It was around 2010 when I started to really think about it because I was winning big tournaments, and that really motivated me.”

Reflecting on his career, playing in eight Mosconi Cups is what he calls most memorable, especially in 2010 when he won MVP. “Also, winning the 2014 World Cup of pool for England with Karl Boyes was amazing. I enjoy team events because you get to share with other people,” he says. “Also great has been getting to travel the world and meet some amazing people and being able to give back to the game and the people that need help, such as the British Wheelchair tour.”

Rossman will be honored in the Meritorious Service category. Rossman is credited with being the founding father of the modern day "Artistic Pool" movement. His efforts in organizing trick shots as a competitive discipline was also instrumental in the development of the ESPN Trick Shot Magic shows. He’s also a master teacher as well, certified as an Advanced Instructor by the Professional Billiard Instructors Association.

By Anthony Stoeckert One of the biggest advantages of attending the BCA Billiard and Home Leisure Expo at the South Point Hotel & Casino, Aug. 2-4, is being able to go to seminars where experts share ideas and insights designed to improve your business. And this year’s seminars promise to be can’tmiss opportunities.

Lynn Switanowski, of Creative Business Consulting Group, LLC, will present two seminars. The first, “Social Media Marketing: How to Create Posts, Pictures, Videos and Ads that Deliver Sales for Your Billiard Business,” will take place Aug. 2, beginning at 8 a.m.

On Aug. 3 at 2 p.m., Switanowski will present “Instagram 2017: Why You MUST Have it and How to Make It Work for Your Billiard Business.”

Also on Aug. 3, beginning at 8 a.m., Linda Cahan, of Cahan & Company Retail Visual Design, will present her seminar, “Let's Get Visual! Merchandising’s Secret Weapons.”

GETTING ONLINE WITH MARKETING A marketing vet, Switanowski has been in the retail industry for nearly 30 years.

She is the founder and president of Creative Business Consulting Group, a Boston-based retail strategy consulting firm. Using more than 29 years of retail 40 | BCA INSIDER • EXPO 2017

experience as her guide, Switanowski leads the CBCG team to engage with billiard retailers and manufacturers, helping them create and implement profit social media, marketing and inventory management strategies.

Switanowski says that while she has seen a lot of changes over that time, the keys to successful business marketing – how to reach customers, create loyalty, and drive sales – haven’t changed.

“With this in mind, more than 12 years ago I saw the shift in marketing beginning to change from traditional media – such as newspapers radio and TV – to the internet including email marketing and then 10 years ago, the introduction of social media with Facebook as a tool to connect with customers. I began to work with my small-business clients in order to help them understand that as consumers were changing – and using new tools.

So too must retailers change the methods in order to meet customers with their messages.”

Since that time, there are even more online tools for retailers – Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, blogs – but Switanowski says the concepts of marketing remain the same: “Finding out where your customers are getting information and asking questions about products and services that

your business provides and then putting marketing content in those places (and on those social media sites) for them to find your business,” she says.

THE SOCIAL EVENT OF THE SEASON Switanowski says her first seminar, on creating posts, pictures, videos and ads to deliver sales, is a how-to on how billiard retailers can create connections with their customers through their social media posts.

“We’ll work with the retailers to not only share the ‘formula’ for what makes posts ‘social’ but we’ll share tips on what time to post, show attendees how to create pictures and videos that garner attention and get ‘liked’ and ‘shared,’” she says.

The seminar also will cover how social media advertising – especially via Facebook and Instagram – can help businesses “meet” new customers every day.

If you’re a retailer who’s been reluctant to jump into the world of social media, you’re likely to find out that it isn’t as intimidating as it looks.

“It is easier once you understand how it works,” Switanowski says. “Most retailers don't want to commit the

time to learning something new, and therefore they say it's difficult. However, when understood, attendees will find that most of the social media tools are very intuitive, and there is a formula for success for creating posts that work!”

She says her sessions share that formula, and teach how to create posts that engage readers and lead to the conversion to sales.

“It's really important for retailers to have a commitment to following that formula and posting on a regular basis – and stick to it in order to succeed,” Switanowski says. “They must find the time to do marketing for the business, and today that's being on social media every single day – multiple times per day.”

INSTAGRAM RESULTS A separate seminar devoted to Instagram is important, Switanowski says, because the photo-based social media platform is growing in popularity, and because Instagram is a visual tool that takes less time for customers to view, which makes it effective in today’s fastpaced multi-tasking society. Compare it to looking at a political cartoon in a newspaper compared to reading a political column, you’re going to get the point of the cartoon much quicker than the column’s point.

She says Instagram is the “rising star” of social media, and that the seminar will be about “how billiard businesses can learn to harness the power of this powerful picture and video social media tool to help connect with customers.”

While Facebook has more users than Instagram (more than 1.5 billion for Facebook, between 400 and 500 million for Instagram), because Facebook owns Instagram, the two platforms work simultaneously.

“Lots of information can be shared via both, which makes it even more effective,” Switanowski says. “As owners of Instagram, Facebook has used the best tools to help it grow faster.”

HERE TO STAY If your business is not up to speed on Instagram and social media, then attending these seminars is vital, because Switanowski says social media isn’t going away.

“The new consumer mindset is to search on-line for information about products and services and then engage with brands they find interesting in the searches,” she says. “To compete effectively today, and tomorrow, the most important thing that I want retailers to understand about social media is that their customers are using it!

“And I mean every customer, whether they are Baby Boomers, Gen X-ers

or Millennials. And because of that, everyone in the industry must be prepared to use social media on a consistent basis in order to market their billiard business.”

She adds that her seminars are influenced by the people in attendance.

There is specific information that needs to be covered, but the sessions are geared for everyone in the room.

“We understand retail – and we understand social media – so we work with all levels to make sure they all get something out of the sessions,” Switanowski says. “We begin each session by understanding who is in the room, what knowledge they currently have and what their biggest concerns are, and then we deliver the content to help each participant in the room achieve the most they can out of the session.”

LET’S GET VISUAL You can date Cahan’s work in visual merchandising all the way back to 1971. She worked for department stores until 1983 when she opened her own firm. Since then she has worked with international companies such as American Express, United Rental and Singer Sewing Machine Company.

Cahan ghost wrote the visual standards manual for Saks Fifth Avenue, and has written manuals for other companies as well.

During her seminar, Cahan will discuss such topics as the science of retail color psychology, sensory merchandising, and basic design techniques of lighting, signage and display. She will use visual materials to illustrate examples of visual merchandizing, which she says is everything customers see when they walk “into, up to, and through” a store.

“Over the years, it has come to encompass what is called ‘the customer experience’ or ‘experiential retailing.’

know what it was,” Cahan says. “I also talk about emotional and sensory merchandising, which is obviously more than sight. It’s what you touch, smell, feel, hear, taste. I really talk about how adding those senses is going to make the experience far more memorable, and make people feel like your store belongs to them.”

“I think there are store owners who don’t think these things are important, that it’s just important to get the stuff out on the floor,” Cahan says. “While that’s important, the minute you set up any kind of visual stimulation or inspiration, people feel like you’re going that extra mile, that you’re essentially entertaining them.

The billiard retail business has a lot of potential to excite customers’ senses: the color and feel of the cloth, the colors and smoothness of the balls, the visual image of cues hanging on a wall.

All of these are opportunities for visual marketing. Sound is another sense that can be taken advantage of, Cahan says.

“When they see, for instance, a billiard table in an actual setting, all of a sudden, they can picture it in their home. You’re giving them an opportunity to be imaginative. Even just one good display can influence the perception of the entire space. You don’t have to display out every single square inch.”

“When a really expensive cue hits the ball, it sounds like a musical note,” she says.

In visiting billiard stores, Cahan says she has found some that do a wonderful job with visual marketing, but that there likely are owners who are overlooking things like design, lighting and signage.

She says many of these concepts are fairly simple and logical ways to market your products and services. They’re the kinds of things people hear and think, “Oh, of course.”

“When you’re setting up your store, or re-setting your store, you want to remember these things,” Cahan says.

These concepts can help successful businesses continue to grow, and they also can help a slumping business improve. Improving visual marketing can change a lot of things for the better, and not just what customers see. When retailers feel good about their stores, their mood and attitude are sure to improve, which in turn will improve relationships with customers.

“The minute you start refreshing, essentially, the store starts feeling better,” Cahan says. “It starts getting more interesting. It feels better. When you put energy into a space, people can feel that energy. If a business starts slumping, usually there’s depression that goes along with that. And the minute you start re-energizing the space, you re-energize yourself as well. Everything connects. When you start doing something, you feel good about it, if you feel good, you feel good when people walk in, and they’ll feel it. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.”

HOW TO SPEND YOUR TIME IN VEGAS

We asked a handful of industry insiders who’ve visited Vegas many times over the years to share advice for making the most out of your Sin City visit. Here’s what they had to say, including tips for first-time Vegas visitors:

SKIP NEMECEK

President, Tweeten Fibre

Nemecek, who is president of one of the industry’s best-known cue-tip and chalk makers, has been visiting Las Vegas on the regular for nearly 30 years. Nearly all of his trips have been for the BCA Expo or other industry-related business.

“Some of the best BCA shows have been in Vegas – no doubt,” he says.

The business atmosphere is “robust,” Nemecek says, but even more so, “There is always the social element that is hard to re-create anywhere else. Tons of special moments. However… not sure any of my colleagues would like me to share most of them,” he winks, a silent nod to the ubiquitous “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” motto.

Though Nemecek himself doesn’t play much pool in Vegas – “Too much work,” he says – he’s quick to point out that Sin City may be the pool town.

“Vegas has always been the spot for the major leagues in America to host their national championships,” he says.

“Considering these events bring upwards of 10,000 amateur pool players to Vegas year after year it could be argued Vegas is 44 | BCA INSIDER • EXPO 2017

the pool town. Several other professional events are also held annually in Vegas so I would think there is no other city in America that welcomes pool and its players more.”

Some of Nemecek’s favorite things to do in the city are outside the famous, bustling and often challenging area known as The Strip. He points out something that people who actually live in Vegas tend to let visitors know as well: Get away from the strip, and outside the all-encompassing world of the casinos, and you’ll find beauty, nature and wonderment.

“No doubt, Vegas offers tons of things to do,” says Nemecek who counts riding motorcycles to the Hoover Dam and hiking up to the mountains as some of his favorite memories.

Cohen says. “Everyone is excited to talk to you and share their story.”

Outside of work, Cohen’s staff from Championship Billiards – a provider of fabrics, rubber cushions and other pool components – takes an evening to go out and play pool.

“Las Vegas has a vibrant billiard scene,” Cohen says. He recommends the pool hall Griff’s, owned by Mark Griffin, as a “first-class” place to play.

He also recommends taking a night out on the town to take in a show on The Strip and have dinner.

Cohen, who has been visiting Las Vegas for trade shows for the last quartercentury, points out one of the great benefits of the BCA Expo – especially, in his mind – is moving it to a hotel off the strip in a quieter atmosphere.

“I enjoy running into everyone at dinner, shows and at the bar after show hours,” he says. “It brings so much more to the show when we can spend time with our industry friends once a year.”

He advises first-time BCA Expo attendees to invest time and preparation in the trade show itself.

“Plan ahead with your show schedule and be sure to see every company on the floor since that’s why you came,”

“We have also done some motorcycling around the area,” he says. To that point: A bike cruise through the Vegas Strip will feel like blasting through a splash of lights and noise, with larger-thanlife billboards featuring faces of famous Vegas performers – David Copperfield, Criss Angel, Elton John – staring down at you. You’ll zip by the dancing Fountains of Bellagio and the pyramidshaped Luxor, with its serene-looking Sphinx. You can make a quick stop at the iconic “Welcome to Las Vegas sign” (be prepared to wait in line if you want a close-up photo) and then, well, you’re free. In Vegas, once you get outside The Strip, you’re riding on flat, open terrain with striking mountains bordering you in every direction.

It’s quite the ride.

Cornwall, a retailer from Connecticut, calls Las Vegas “an adult Disney World.”

And it is: Every casino is like a theme park, and most have a clear theme too, whether it’s the Manhattan-themed New York New York, the Egyptianinspired Luxor, or the pirate-“infested” (but not really) Treasure Island.

That said, Cornwall has turned the BCA Expo into an annual family affair.

Her son, who is 15, has been coming to the trade show for the last seven years.

“It’s definitely family friendly,” she says of Vegas. “That’s not like many years ago.” Cornwall, who is 50, first visited Vegas when she was 10. Back then, it wasn’t good for a young kid. “It was very family-unfriendly way back when,” she says. “I’ve seen the evolution of it.”

She adds, “My husband and I have seen nearly every Cirque show.” (Note: Most, but not all, Cirque shows are family friendly. Check ahead on that.)

She also recommends the High Roller, a 550-foot-tall ferris wheel at The Linq Hotel & Casino. “It’s wonderful,” she says, adding that the roller coaster on top of the New York New York hotel and casino is another good family choice. (A note on the roller coaster: It’s hard and fast and jolting – leave your phones packed away!)

If you want to get outside The Strip, Cornwall recommends taking a helicopter ride or visiting the Grand Canyon. “But you’ll need to set aside a full day for that,” she says. But like most opportunities in Vegas – at least those that don’t involve slots or dice or cards – it’s surefire worth it.

And she likes that evolution. Cornwall and her husband took their son to see the Cirque du Soleil show “Michael Jackson ONE” at Mandalay Bay.

JohnnyArcher seems like a guy who would know Vegas well.The man has played, and won, seemingly countless tournaments in Sin City. He’s been visiting Vegas since the late 1980s, and though he hasn’t visited in a few years (he’s making good money running his business at home in Georgia), he knows the city well.

“It’s not inexpensive,” she says, “but if you can swing it, the shows are great.”

But ask the BCA Hall of Famer for some tips and recommendations, and he

laughs. Loud and hard. “Me and Vegas don’t get along too good!” he says.

That’s partly because he doesn’t game, but mostly because the Las Vegas Strip is loud and bustling and, well, just a pool of crazy.

Which doesn’t quite match up with Archer’s preferences. He’s a country guy and prefers the slower, quieter pace.

“My funnest time in Vegas is when I played Bonus Ball and I wasn’t on The Strip,” Archer says. “We had a place rented that was off The Strip. We stayed in little apartment houses, and I probably had my best time in Vegas.”

That’s because it “reminded me more of being at home.”

“It was calmer, it was slower, we walked to places,” Archer says. “It was not that fast-paced style that The Strip has.”

There’s a lesson here: The Vegas race isn’t for everyone, and it’s important to know that if you want it, you can find calm – even peaceful, serene nature – in the Las Vegas area.

“If you can get out and go see things like Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam, it’s well worth it,” Archer says. “The Strip got old. Every casino was the same.They all get your money the same way.”

PLANNING FOR YOUR BILLIARD BUSINESS TO PROFIT

As you sit reading this article, do you know how much revenue your billiard business needs in order to pay your rent, operating expenses and payroll – and still turn a profit? And do you have a regular strategy to review your business on a regular basis to ensure you’re going to make a profit at the end of the year?

If you don’t, you’re not alone. Many billiard retailers are so busy working “in” their businesses, they forget to work “on” their businesses – but that stops today!

At CBCG, we don’t want the concept of your billiard business making a profit to be a “fingers crossed, hope it works out experience.” We want you to have a plan to continually review your business during the year to ensure you make money all year long. Below, we share our best tips to help you plan for your billiard business to profit by looking at three key operating areas on a consistent basis.
