MESSAGE Welcome to the 2020 Annual Pillars Conference.

Pillars is part of a professional enhancement program that provides experiences for leaders to strengthen their sense of global purpose, personal well-being and individual resilience. This year’s theme is “Caterpillar to Butterfly: Maximizing Your Potential through Personal Development.” The progress from a caterpillar to butterfly provides a rich metaphor for the benefits of working from the inside out. In that regard, Pillars invests in leaders as they discover, grow and excel in their chosen career path.

This conference wraps up a year-long schedule of events in the SBSHS Professional Enhancement Program. In the past, we have held the conference at the Pillars Resort in Fort Lauderdale. The name of the resort combined with the imagery of “Pillars” has served us well over the years. It reminds us that certain critical skills of leadership, often described as “soft” should manifest in concrete forms and outcomes. And now, for the first time, we are meeting remotely.

Although we are not convening at our traditional location, we strive to carry the principles of excellence in leadership with us wherever we go, as pillars in our community.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Jessica Vera, PhD Transformational Practitioner, International Business Consultant & Founder of Elite Foundation

By her mid-twenties, Dr. J had experienced tremendous success. She founded multiple-million dollar corporations, was awarded several accolades and had spoken on international platforms. But underlying her success was an equally massive battle from within, one deeply rooted in childhood trauma. KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Clayton Mitchell, PE, CEM Senior Vice President, Real Estate and Facilities, Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals

Mitchell joined Jefferson from Kaiser Permanent Health Plan, where he served in various capacities, to include Executive Director, National Facilities Services Colorado and Mid-Atlantic States, and, Vice President (Interim) Facilities Operations. Kaiser Permanente is an integrated managed care organization with more than 12 million members, 200,000 administrative employees, 18,000 physicians, 51,000 nurses, and $80 billion in annual revenues.

For Jefferson, Mitch provides the leadership of facilities service delivery and public safety for a 15 million square foot portfolio comprised of 14 hospitals, a university with two main campuses, and research labs. He is charged with leading corporate transformation of real estate,facilities, and public safety and 400+ staff distributed across five divisions. He also develops creative and fiscally responsible plans for execution of Jefferson real estate and facilities strategies, to include sustainability, digital transformation within real estate and facilities, capital program delivery, and real estate portfolio management.

Raised in San Mateo, California, Mitch earned his Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo, and his Master’s in Civil Engineering, with a concentration in Construction Management, from the University of California at Berkeley. He has also completed executive management studies at both the Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth and the Harvard Business School. He completed a 25-year career as a U.S. Navy Civil Engineer Corps officer prior to transitioning to the healthcare industry delivering over $7B in facilities projects and services across the facilities spectrum to include planning, design, construction, real estate, operations, and maintenance.

Mitch served in various challenging assignments to include Director, Maintenance, Transportation, and Utilities at the U.S. Naval Academy; Operations Officer for Naval Mobile Construction Battalion SEVENTY FOUR based in Gulfport, Mississippi; Navy Legislative Fellow to Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott; Executive Assistant to the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Navy, Installations and Facilities; and Commanding Officer, Naval Mobile Construction Battalion FORTY based in Port Hueneme, California and which deployed to New Orleans, Louisiana (Hurricane Katrina); Okinawa, Japan, and; Fallujah, Iraq.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS: Gregory Adam Haile, JD Broward College President

Gregory Adam Haile is the seventh president of Broward College. He assumed the role on July 1, 2018. Prior to his appointment, President Haile served as the General Counsel and Vice President for Public Policy and Government Affairs for Broward College from September 2011 to June 2018 A career public servant, community leader, and accomplished educator, President Haile has championed the community serving in over 35 board or committee capacities and 20 Chair/President or Vice-Chair/President positions. His current positions include service with Leadership Florida as Chair, the Florida Chamber Foundation, the Broward Workshop, the Orange bowl Committee, the United Way of Broward County, the Pace Center for Girls, and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance. Since being recognized in 2007 by Gold Coast Magazine as a prominent South Floridian, he has been recognized with more than 2 dozen awards for his influence and commitment to the community.

As an educator, President Haile annually teaches in Cambridge, Massachusetts, teaching a self-designed 4-credit course in Higher Education Law and Policy at Harvard University (Summer School). He previously served as an adjunct professor at Broward College, teaching Business Law and Ethics, and with Miami Dade College, teaching Business Law. He was educated at the Columbia University School of Law, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and served as the Editor-in-Chief of the National Black Law Journal and as an Editor of the Journal on Gender and Law. He received his bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University, where he graduated magna cum laude and received the Most Outstanding Graduate award in his college. He is also a fellow of the Vanderbilt University Higher Education Management Institute. President Haile is married with two children.

Chae Haile, MPA Funded President & Grant Writer

Chae is passionate about promoting the well-being of youth, families and the empowerment of communities. She founded and presided over Funded, a freelance grant writing company dedicated to assisting nonprofit organizations raise funds to support their efforts. Haile has nearly 20 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, ranging from direct program services to grant administration, writing grants, as well as managing and disbursing grants for a local United Way. She has successfully obtained grant funding from private foundations, community foundations, corporate foundations and government entities. As president and founder of Funded, Chae Haile’s vision is to reduce the pressures faced by nonprofit organizations, small businesses and individuals who continuously seek out and apply for new sources of funding. Funded acts as an extension of an organization’s funding arm and is a part of their development team. This allows her to do the heavy lifting of researching and sourcing grant funding, crafting and submitting grant applications, creating outcome and assessment tools, conducting program analysis and completing summary reports –without taxing the organization's staff.

Ms. Haile holds a Master of Public Administration with a specialization in Public and Nonprofit Management from New York University’s Robert F. Wagner School of Public Service and a B.S. in Justice Studies from Arizona State University. A fervent advocate, Chae is involved in initiatives which support education, foster care and adoption, arts and anti-human trafficking. Ms. Haile also serves as a grant review panelist for the Broward Cultural Council’s Creative Investment Program, which supports arts-based nonprofits and individual artists throughout the county. Chae Haile is married to Gregory Adam Haile and they have two children.

These service efforts take many forms, including volunteer time, charitable giving and for doing visionary work to solve pressing challenges, build opportunity and equity, and create a brighter future for Broward College students and alumni.

Mr. Sutherland served as the top lead intern for the Professional Enhancement Program as well as the President of the Chess Club. He helped develop the Brain Machine Interface lab. In the future Ojdre aspires to become a neurosurgeon.

THE PILLARS OF THE C Ginger Martin, MBA, BBS, CPA American National Bank, CEO

American National Bank is proudly celebrating 33 years of building relationships and Ginger Martin has been with the bank 21 of those years.

Ms. Martin’s passion for fighting against human trafficking has led her on a mountain climbing journey with The Freedom Challenge since 2014.

With five climbs under her belt thus far, including a noteworthy climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa in 2015, Machu Picchu, Peru in 2017, Mt. Whitney in 2018, Ms. Martin has tirelessly raised funds and awareness for the women and children who are victims of human trafficking. As a result, Ms. Martin has been asked to speak to different groups throughout South Florida, including a recent TEDx Talk, to tell her story of climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro and the leadership lessons learned along the way.

Under her leadership, the bank has received numerous awards for its financial performance and community involvement, such as the 2018, 2017 & 2016 Banky Award from The Institute for Extraordinary Banking, Business of the Year Award from South Florida Business Journal, and Small Business of the Year from the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce. The Commonwealth Institute named the bank one of the “Top 50 Women Led Businesses” in the state of Florida in 2018, 2017, 2016 & 2015.

In addition, Ms. Martin has been personally honored for her business leadership with awards such as Ultimate CEO by South Florida Business Journal, 2015 Laureate by Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame, Profiles in Leadership Honoree by Leadership Broward, and Influential Business Women by South Florida Business Journal. Ms. Martin earned an MBA from Florida Atlantic University, a BBA Accounting Magna Cum Laude from the University of Louisiana, and is a Certified Public Accountant.

COMMUNITY AWARDS Tremaine Hemans, JD Immigration Lawyer

Tremaine Hemans is an associate immigration attorney at the Law Offices of Jesus Reyes. She earned her BA in Legal Assisting (summa cum laude) from Nova SE University and her Juris Doctorate from the FIU College of Law. She has worked as an intern in the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in the Office of the Chief Counsel, Office of the Principal Legal Advisor (OCC/OPLA). She has also served as a student attorney in the Carlos A. Costa Immigration and Human Rights Clinic. Before law school, Tremaine attended Broward College where she obtained an AA in Pre- Law (with highest honors), as well as an AS in Paralegal Studies (with high honors).

Tremaine stands out in litigation and is an expert in legal writing, as she was a member of the FIU Law Trial Team and is a published author of "The Intersection of Race, Bond and 'Crimmigration' in the United States Immigration Detention System" which is published on legal databases Westlaw and LexisNexis.Tremaine likes to participate in church activities and spend time with her family, especially her husband. A proud immigrant herself, Tremaine is a defender of human rights and is passionate about helping the immigrant community and others. Her faith in God has been a guide for Tremaine's life and cause for perseverance.

After Law School, she decided to transition her passion for mentorship into a mentorship and consulting endeavor through her website www.legallytrem.com, where high school, college and graduate students are given the opportunity to sign on as mentees and get advice on applying to, succeeding in, and graduating from college and seeking employment thereafter. She also enjoys singing and serving as a choir director and youth leader at the Christway Baptist Church and takes every opportunity to speak to young people to remind them that where they start does not define their destination in life.

Michael Landry, BA, LLB , GradD Landry Trebbi Investments, CEO

Mr. Michael G. Landry is a respected business leader and education advocate in Broward County. He holds a degree in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Born in Canada, he graduated from Carlton University in Ottawa with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. His first job out of college was as a teacher and basketball coach at St. Patrick’s High School in Ottawa. Three years later, he worked for a firm specializing in physicians’ investments, and then he worked with John Templeton.

His many organizational affiliations include membership in the Association for Investment Management and Research, and founding member of the International Society of Financial Analysts, for which he also served as director.

The investment business involved a lot of travel, which led to his interest in small boutique hotels, such as the award-winning hotel, The Pillars at New River Sound, which merited the Jerry Johnston Award as the highest-rated hotel in Broward County’s Superior Small Lodging Program. For the past 10 years, since the Pillars Conference was founded, he has generously offered his beautiful resort as the official site of the conference.

Mr. Landry serves on the boards of the Community Foundation of Broward, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Broward Workshop, Jack and Jill. And he is an honorary member of the Broward College Foundation Board of Directors because of his exemplary service. At Broward College, he has assisted students just like you with the establishment the George and Jean Trebbi Endowed Scholarship, named in honor of his wife’s parents, as well as the Michael Landry American Dream Scholarship.

Geographic Information System: The GIS certificates program prepares students for employment as a geographic information systems (GIS) technician or provides GIS training to those currently employed in these occupations. Introduction The SBSHS Professional Enhancement Program is a unique internship, which pairs Broward College students with Broward College leaders and community professionals. The interns gain experience and knowledge in their intended fields of study and/or careers. Internship providers who participate in the program share their time and talent to give students meaningful, career-related experiences. Expectations In addition to PIES, interns are assigned a lead intern, who acts as a peer mentor.

Indicators of successful participation and completion of the program by interns include consistent academic achievement, active participation in the program, and aspirations for continuing education beyond Broward College.
