ervice S to others Service through Art Molly Lee, Class of ‘19 Last April, FPD middle and high school students visited various local elementary schools to teach the students more about art and lead them in a collaborative art project.

The event was such a success that several of our seniors were asked to return to Macon’s Ingram Pye this fall to help elementary students with a new art project.

Smiles of joy filled the classrooms as the FPD seniors visited with each of the students in kindergarten through fifth grade. They discussed art and various techniques, but, even more, they were able to connect on other topics.

“I loved being able to help the kids be creative, but most importantly I got to talk with the kids,” commented FPD senior Molly Lee, “They talked about their school, extracurriculars, goals for

the future, and more. They were so open, and I loved being able to encourage them.”

The students and their upperclassmen teachers used various mediums to create artwork reflective of artist Jacob Lawrence.

However, Molly hopes the students take away more than just lessons about art.

“I hope the students were able to see a Christ-like example in us,” notes Molly. “I believe it is important to be involved in service projects because it is important to serve our community. Jesus commands Christians to love our neighbors as ourselves, which means loving on the people around us. Working with the kids at Ingram Pye allowed FPD to be a witness for Christ.”

Community Service at FPD is an important part of our school’s culture.

Students discover their gifts and passions and use them to serve others. In elementary, students begin to learn what it means to have a servant’s heart. That continues in middle school with various projects and Middle School Service Day. In high school, students create, plan, and implement projects throughout the year that benefit the Macon community as well as others around the state, nation, and internationally.

Here is a sample of stories from students who have found their passion for serving others in various ways.

Campus Clubs

Gray Simmons & Sadonna Flemming, Class of ‘19

Over the past several years, FPD has established a special relationship with Campus Clubs in Macon. Many of our high school students spend numerous hours there, working with students in after-school and summer programs including cheer camps, flag football, basketball, and others. Two FPD students who gained a particular affinity for the organization are Gray Simmons and Sadonna Flemming, both members of the class of 2019.

Four years ago, FPD’s Gray Simmons helped Campus Clubs start a robotics program.

“When I was a kid, I enjoyed playing with LEGOs and creating contraptions and feel that is why my interests are what they are now,” said Gray. “Therefore, I felt using the (First LEGO League) competitions would be a great way to share my knowledge of robotics with the students at Campus Clubs in hopes that some would find it equally as entertaining and interesting as I did.”

Gray spends his afternoons at Campus Clubs helping the students design, build, and program their robots for First LEGO League competitions. At these competitions, each robotics team is given two minutes to complete missions for points. However, Gray’s hopes for the students goes much further than points in a competition. “My goal for every student is to have a better understanding of STEM. I hope they get enthusiastic about STEM-related fields.”

Sadonna Fleming found a similar calling.

“I have always been drawn to serve children who are underprivileged.

Helping those who are impoverished really shows me how fortunate I am and how to be grateful for the many things I have,” says Sadonna. “It truly warms my heart to see these children with smiles on their faces. The amount of love I have for these children is endless, which is why I continue to go back.”

When Sadonna first started at Campus Clubs, she helped with the kindergarten, first, and second grade students. During her third year she started working with middle school students and helping them with their homework. What she really enjoys is being a mentor. “They want someone to recognize their struggles and be there for them,” says Sadonna. “I sincerely hope the students know that I am always there to help them and strive for them to do better in all aspects of life.”

These unique experiences have also impacted Gray and Sadonna in more ways than they initially imagined.

They agree they have gained a better perspective on their own blessings and made some lifelong connections.

“Giving back builds hope and when there is hope there is always a future,” sums up Sadonna. “Too many of us are focused on the ‘struggle’ of our daily lives to even think about giving back. But in all honesty, we know that there are people in our communities who are living below the bread line and subsisting on a day-to-day basis.

I believe it is important for not only students, but for everyone to step away from their ‘norm’ and get involved in their community.”

Casa Hogar

Mary Daniel Windham ‘21 & Jansyn Samples ‘19

Casa Hogar holds a special place in the hearts of many FPD students. For years, FPD ninth through twelfth graders have chosen this orphanage in Acapulco, Mexico as a summer or spring break mission opportunity. While there, they help build, clean, assist staff, and, most importantly, minister to the kids.

Mary Daniel agrees, “Personally, I gained the understanding of loving others like Christ loves. He loves us unconditionally, and it’s something we do not deserve. These kids love everyone who walks through the doors of Casa Hogar. They taught me that no matter your background, or the background of others, we should love everyone.”

Two FPD students who found a love for Casa Hogar are Jansyn Samples ’19 and Mary Daniel Windham ’21. Jansyn’s first trip was in 2017 and Mary Daniel went for the first time this past summer. Both students heard stories of the unparalleled opportunities to serve at Casa Hogar, but neither realized how much the kids and their mentors would also impact them.

This past summer’s trip included physical challenges such as construction and moving large rocks into a dump truck. However, the highlights were always the afternoons spent playing soccer, volleyball, and various other games with the kids. Sunday plays an especially important role in the lives of both the Casa Hogar kids and the FPD students.

On Sundays both groups, despite language barriers, go to church together.

“Casa Hogar is such a special place because of the clear and apparent reflection of God’s love and His will in the lives of the staff and children there,” notes Jansyn. “The biggest impact that Casa Hogar always has on my life is the increased nearness to God and strengthening of my faith when I return home.”

“Obviously, when going on an international mission trip, it’s natural to be nervous about the language barrier between you and those you are going to serve,” says Jansyn.

“However, as I tell anyone who has ever talked to me about going on this trip, serving and building relationships founded on the love of Christ transcends all barriers.”

The “Friday Club” consists of fifteen students from FPD’s photography class who pack forty-four Backpack Ministry meal bags every week and take them to kids at Rosa Taylor elementary. After dropping off the bags, they generally spend time with the kids, playing and having fun. Beginning this year, the group wanted to take their ministry a step further. They wanted to teach the kids about their passion for art and photography by teaching Photoshop.

“Each one of the (FPD) photography students has a kid or ‘backpack buddy’ as we call them,” says Chase Garrison ’19, “We work on different projects every week, teaching them about art, photography, and recently we have been teaching them about Adobe Photoshop.

“The kids are all so sweet and just seeing them smiling and happy brings me joy.

Helping them out and giving them food to take home for the weekend really brings joy to them.”

While working on their projects, each student engages in conversations with their buddy, sharing God’s love and telling them how special they are. Some days the kids just want someone to listen to them as they talk about a new toy or their friends. The FPD students are happy to listen.

How a Christian education can

Recent studies have demonstrated the positive impact of Christian schools and their graduates on their communities. This theme of education for the community was also foundational for my calling as a Christian educator and helps answer for me the “Why?” of Christian schooling.

While in college preparing to teach, I asked the question, “What is a Christian philosophy of education?” All I could find in my college’s library on that topic was from the works of Martin Luther.

Luther was concerned that all be able to read and study the scriptures and to understand the Gospel.

However, he also believed citizens who were welleducated with a biblical world and life view and Christian virtue were necessary to a well-functioning society.

At FPD, our most common perspective on teaching from a biblical world and life view is the “biblical story” framework of Creation-Fall-Grace-Glory.

This framework follows the Gospel – humanity was created in fellowship with God, we were separated from God through sin in the fall, God provided a solution by grace through Jesus Christ, and then we have an eternal relationship with God in glory.

As a general educational framework, this leads us to look at any situation by asking four questions: 1. How should it be?

(Creation) 2. What is wrong? (Fall) 3. How do we fix it? (Grace) 4. What is the vision for the future? (Glory).

For example, in my Calculus class, I tell my students that mathematics is a way of thinking about the world (Creation) so that we can identify problems (Fall) and seek solutions (Grace) for broad future benefit (Glory).

We don’t just memorize equations to score well on a test. We discuss actual problems and use calculus-based methods to discover new opportunities. We focus on real situations, conceptual understanding, and problem solving.

This framework is the foundation for our classroom education as well as our community service initiatives. Our community service emphasis is not just giving time without payment - volunteerism at its basic level. We take it a step further.

We allow students to explore how things should be in the community, what is wrong, how they can be a part of the solution, and how that benefits the community as a whole.

FPD students are regularly in the community working with over 100 agencies on living issues such as poverty, homelessness, hunger, and other tough topics. Our faculty is committed to developing graduates who are sensitive to the needs of others and the community and challenged to participate in meeting those needs. To do so, students come face-to-face with those issues and find ways they can help make a difference.

So, when we say we are “educating and equipping students to change the world for God’s glory,” we really are educating for the common good.

We are concerned about our students coming to faith in Christ and their spiritual formation. We are also concerned about their walking in the good works God has prepared for them (Ephesians 2:10).

Our prayer is that the Middle Georgia community, and communities beyond, benefit from the service and leadership of FPD students and graduates who meet needs, solve problems, and advance the Gospel and God’s kingdom.

Years of Discovery

FPD’s Center for Discovery celebrates five years of beyond the classroom learning.

FPD’s Center for Discovery celebrated five years of “beyond the classroom” learning this past fall. This unique program on FPD’s campus, offers multiple afterschool and summer classes for students as well as adults. Over the last half-decade, hundreds of participants have enhanced their skill sets and discovered new hobbies through Center for Discovery camps and classes.

“It’s been amazing to look back at some of the classes hosted on our campus over the past five years,” commented Elizabeth Leslein, the Director of FPD’s

Center for Discovery. “Participants have enjoyed programs unlike anything else offered in Macon and each one of them is taught from the biblical worldview that is so distinct about FPD.” The Center for Discovery year is divided into three sessions - Fall, Winter & Spring, and Summer. Each session features new options for students to choose from. Classes range from chess to robotics, tennis to art, ballet to baking. Adults can also enjoy options such yoga, health, dance, and biblical studies.

All Center for Discovery classes are open to the community and scheduled so that students from other schools have time to arrive on campus for their class. Since the program began, approximately 45% of participants have been students from other schools or homeschool programs.

“It is a blessing that we are able to offer programs on our campus that anyone in the community can enjoy,”

noted Elizabeth. “We try, each session, to offer some of our classic favorites along with new and original opportunities.”

The latest selection of classes offers a range of new options for Winter & Spring 2019 including sign language for kids, a junior detectives course, and a session based on the beloved children’s book character Mercy Jackson. Lower school students can also enjoy the return of “Done in a Day” programs on Tuesdays and Thursdays. These pay-perday programs offer an afternoon of fun crafts or activities especially geared toward students in 3K through fifth grade.

“I cannot wait to see what we’ll be able to offer students next,” commented Elizabeth. “It’s such a joy to be able to offer new and exciting afterschool programs for FPD students as well as others in the community. And we’re always looking for new ideas!”

FPD Elementary Enjoys New Greenhouse

Class Spotlight:

Comparative Religion FPD’s curriculum is based on a Christian world and life view. That is something undeniably distinct at our campus. However, the same cannot be said for everywhere else. There are numerous other religions. The focus of Rev. Bob Veazey’s Comparative Religion class is to analyze the spiritual beliefs and practices of the world’s major religions, comparing their beliefs with those of evangelical Christianity.

“My earnest desire is for this class to be an instrument of God’s grace and guidance as [students] grow into young adults,” says Veazey. “I want them to leave FPD equipped to relate to people with diverse spiritual beliefs, while remaining undergirded and growing in their own Christian walk.”

Students begin the course by examining different Christian denominations. Dr. Veazey incorporates local field trips, including visits to the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches, thus giving students a more tangible understanding of their brothers and sisters in Christ. As part of their studies, each student also attends worship at a Christian church from a denomination or tradition other than their own.

After they study the basic tenets and distinctives among Christian denominations, the class examines faiths whose roots are in Christianity but are cults or sects. Finally, the class examines major religions of the world.

They study the origins and historical development of their traditions and the impact these faiths have in our world today.

“It definitely helped strengthen my faith because of all of the logical and historical evidence we learned” says Vivianna Chang, a 2018 graduate, who took the class her Senior year. “Also, learning about different religions and their beliefs created a stronger belief system that supported there is a Creator.”

Payton Bullington ‘19 agrees, “I think it’s very important to learn about other world religions, because when I’m faced with opposition from someone of a different faith, I will know the best way to respectfully defend my faith. Also, learning about other religions only strengthens my faith in Jesus.”

FPD’s elementary students have enjoyed the on-campus educational gardens for the past three years, planting an array of fresh vegetables and herbs in raised beds.

Now students can take their gardening exploration at bit further with a newly installed greenhouse.

With the greenhouse, students can plant seeds in seed trays and place them in the greenhouse to germinate.

So far the students have planted a variety of vegetables including kale, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, spinach, and collards.

The new greenhouse was funded by a grant from ANNUAL FUND ExxonMobil Educational AT WORK! Alliance and your Annual Fund gifts!

FPD Fourth Graders Program Robots as part of STEM education FPD’s fourth graders made their robots spin, twist, and zip across the floor using Dash and Dot, a block-based coding language. The program’s app, Blockly, allows students to learn the basics of coding and then see their work in the movements of a friendly, colorful robot. Through programming, students learn computational thinking, sequencing, loops, collaboration, and communication.

After a few years of using Code.org to teach coding to students in kindergarten through fifth grade, Lyn Brumbelow, FPD Elementary Technology Instructor, brought out the robots to give the students a different perspective on their coding work.

For their first lesson, the goal was to try different commands and see what happens. The students rolled dice and, based on the number rolled, coded a certain command. After the required number of rolls, the students watched their robot execute the program. The students then wrote about the project. Later, the students progressed to solve puzzles and set up their own course.

“This is a great introduction to robotics,” commented Lyn. “When working with the robots in groups, we assign roles and the rotate the roles. There is a Lead Programmer who programs the commands on the iPad, a Robot Wrangler who sets up or moves the robot around before starting the program, and a Documentarian who writes notes. This teaches teamwork in addition to coding.”

New program offers midday options for homeschool students Introduced this year, FPD’s Homeschool Connections welcomes homeschool students to campus during the school day for various midday programs that provide for active, engaged learning for homeschool students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Homeschool Connections opportunities are led by FPD teachers as well as community instructors. Students can study science through hands-on experiments in FPD’s science lab and explore nature using FPD’s nature trail and educational gardens.

Keyboarding and coding options are also available for students in 3rd - 5th grade. For physical education, homeschool students are invited to participate in the Viking Tennis Academy or afterschool Cross Country. For those interested in music, group guitar and ukulele are available. Classes are priced individually so homeschool families can select options that best fit their schedule and interests.

“These opportunities are just the beginning,” said Wade Putnal, FPD Elementary Principal. “We recognize that many of our community homeschool families are looking for opportunities.

We hope to expand these options in the years to come.”

Homeschool families are also invited to attend monthly elementary chapels as well as school theatre productions, concerts, and events.

Explore God’s Creation on FPD’s Expanded Cross Country Course September 19 was an exciting day for FPD, the cross country teams, coaches, and fans as we hosted our inaugural race for interscholastic competition on campus! We had almost 60 FPD students competing at the varsity and middle school levels and hosted approximately 200 additional athletes from area schools.

If you haven’t walked the course or taken a hike along the new 1.5-mile loop, you’re missing a very special trail. About 95% of the Peake Cross Country Trail is in the shade of the trees. As you walk in this quiet and peaceful setting, it feels like you’re miles away from any city.

A big thanks to Ken Garvin and his crews responsible for the loop extension and the construction of the new start and finish field area. Thank you as well to the many volunteers who gave their time and energy toward finishing touches. Thanks also to Allen and Betsy Peake for their continued investment in the cross country program. Thank you to SuperSod, Landscape Associates, and David Sparrow for their generosity and labor with the sod and grassing.

We anticipate expanding the trail network over the next months. We plan to add a full 5K loop and side trails. The side trails will lead to some of the unique treasures for nature study

3-PEAT STATE CHAMPS The Vikings returned from the GISA State Championships in Savannah with FPD’s 47th overall state championship and the team’s third championship in a row for the school’s first-ever 3PEAT! Team members Chet Thompson, Tate Skipper, Dallas Ward, Bryce Daniel, Bryce Floyd, and Truett Frame took seven out of the ten slots for the All-State Team. Dallas Ward also won Highest Female Overall Average at the State Championship.

SOFTBALL

The Lady Vikings were Region 7A runner-ups and returned to the state championships in Columbus, Georgia for the seventh straight year. There they finished third in Class-A Private with a 20-7 overall record for the 2018 season. Leading the way for the Lady Vikings were 1st Team All-Region members Olivia Parker, Cardin Weaver, Abbey Surles, Moe Register, Allison Hammack, and Region 7A Player of the Year Karsen Ochs. “The girls found a way, every single day, to get one percent better, and that’s why we were able to return to Columbus to compete for the state championship,” said Head Coach Denny Bryant.

The Vikings competed hard every Friday night and ended the season with a 28-12 win over Washington-Wilkes. “We got off to a slow start while we were trying to establish some identity after losing a very impactful senior class last year, but I was really proud of the way our team finished the second half of the season. The season-ending win at Washington-Wilkes spoke very clearly that our boys were still fighting and giving their all,” said Head Coach Greg Moore. “I’m excited about the development of our younger guys. They are eager to get back to work this offseason, and that hard work will pay off.”

The Vikings had three of its members named to the 2018 7A All-Region team this fall -Wesley Wilson, Joshua Raines, and Ty Turley.

FOOTBALL

VOLLEYBALL The Lady Vikings were Area Runner-Up and made their fifth consecutive trip to the GHSA Class-A Volleyball Playoffs, finishing with a 27-7 overall record. “This season we had a completely new group of girls and a young team. We asked a lot out of them, and they played with grit and toughness.

We laid a solid foundation to build on next year.

With most of our starters returning, I am excited to see the growth out of our team next year,” said Head Coach Sarah Futo. The Lady Vikings had two members, Emily Cox and Wynter Callahan, named to the 2018 All-Area Volleyball Team for their outstanding play.

COMPETITION CHEER FPD’s newest Varsity Sport has an unbelievable season finale

After a brief hiatus, FPD’s Varsity Competition Cheer team came back to the scene with an incredible 2018 season, placing sixth at their firstever appearance at the GHSA State Competition and hosting two home meets.

However, things took an unexpected turn during the competition. The girls started off strong, but then their music stopped mid-performance. Murnan and the assistant coaches weren’t sure how the girls would react. However, the team knew this was their moment!

“After about 4 years of watching these girls work hard and gain the skills needed to be the best (in middle school), I decided it was time to add back the Varsity team and show off what they have worked so hard for,” said Head Coach Jessica Murnan.

“They kept going like nothing happened,” notes Murnan. “I was even more shocked when the entire arena, thousands of people, starting counting their 8-counts in unison. The girls’ faces lit up, and they got even stronger. It was like an underdog Disney movie. I can’t even explain it.

The girls finished the best they have ever finished. We were so proud of them!”

The middle school and high school teams even brought competition cheer meets to FPD’s campus, welcoming 21 schools and hundred of fans from all over Georgia for the inaugural Viking Voyage on September 22, 2018. Later in the season, FPD was also honored to host the Class-A State Sectionals.

The highlight of the season would come a few weeks later at the State Finals in Columbus, Georgia.

“Before we left for Columbus, the entire school gave the girls a very energetic send-off. It was amazing!” remembers Coach Murnan.

When the officials announced that they would call down the top six teams to the floor, the girls’ hearts sank a bit. They had no thoughts that they would finish in the top six at their first state competition.

“When they announced First Presbyterian Day School was in the top six, we immediately lost it,” says Murnan.

“We began crying and screaming for joy.

It was an amazing feeling. All I have ever wanted for these girls is for their Godgiven talents to be rewarded and they were! They were number six in the state at their very first state competition. We cannot wait to see what next year brings!”

Applying a Biblical Worldview to Music Education

The last few years, we as a faculty have intentionally focused on what it means to teach our various subject areas from a biblical worldview. As I researched and thought about the place of music instruction in Christian education, I realized there is more depth and meaning to participation in music than we realize. I recently presented these ideas at the Association of Christian Schools International Regional Professional Development Forum.

Next, we talk about what a composer is. Simply, a composer is someone who writes music. (I love how in our writing curriculums we refer to the children as the “authors” and “illustrators” of their own work. This translates wonderfully to the music room.) Finally, even with the first graders, they compose and perform their own musical ideas. As they get older, the composition projects get harder.

Communication

Stop and think for a moment. Why did God give us the Bible? (I even ask the students this question.) My answer is that He wanted to communicate a message to us, namely, His love. In John 1:14, we learn that “the Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.” Jesus came to earth, as the Word of God, to communicate something to us.

Why do we teach music as part of Christian education?

Some of the common answers I encounter are: to teach students how to glorify God through music, to encourage those students who possess musical skill or aptitude, to help students take part in the traditions of the Church, and to learn sacred music texts.

I tell the students that communication needs both listening and talking to work. Musically, we look at the example of drum circles in West African cultures. The purpose of these drum circles is to send messages. The drums “talk” to each other. Often, a leader will play a pattern on a drum - the call, and the rest of the group will answer back - the response. The music is sending a message. In third and fourth grade we play a musical name game that uses drums to communicate in a call-and-response form.

None of these answers are wrong, however, I find them incomplete and too narrow in focus.

In elementary music classes, we routinely touch on two essential questions of biblical worldview - Who is God? and What Does it Mean to Be Human?

To break it down even further, I focus on two main themes within these larger categories - Creation and Communication. I’ll explain each theme and give some examples of how they are incorporated into various lessons.

Music is an amazing aspect of God’s creation in which all children should be able to participate.

Music education taught from a biblical worldview respects the image of God within each child. Everyone is invited to participate in the creation and communication of music, just the way God created us to participate in His story!

Creation

In Genesis 1, the very first thing we see God doing is creating. Later in the chapter (v. 27-28) He tells us that we have been created in His image and tasked with participating in His creation. This is often referred to as the Creation Mandate. Now, what does that “look like” in a lesson with a first grade class, for example?

9 Dragons Nine Dragons, FPD’s one-act competition play, took second place in GHSA Class A – Area 1 Private Competition on Saturday, October 19, and advanced to the state competition.

In addition to the team award, Ryann Perkins ‘21 was recognized with an Outstanding Performance Award for her portrayal of Yai Tzu the Fierce – better known to the audience and judges as the “Red Dragon of War.” The play featured traditional music and theatrical choreography that fused Chinese and Polynesian myth and imagery.

As hosts of the regional competition, FPD’s cast and crew spent the day helping the other schools as needed.

They watched every show they could see and celebrated the work of other casts, moved and inspired by other people who love theatre just as much as they do.

The first category on the judging sheets is for Ensemble, the theatre version of “team.” This category looks at whether the performers work seamlessly as a group and if every person is fully a part

of the show. It is FPD Theatre Director Dr. Andrew Strickland’s favorite category because “Ensemble” is the heart of FPD theatre - teamwork. In that category, FPD received an amazing 44 out of a possible 45. The scores in other categories were likewise impressive and the team was pleased with the final outcome.

“Every year the students and I go to the black box theatre after competition and read the judges’ comments together,” Dr. Strickland said. “I tell them every year that the words of the judges, while insightful and helpful to us as performers, should never change their view of the show. Our kids did not need a trophy to know that they had performed outstanding work. I loved watching how well the constructive criticism we received was accepted by the cast and crew. In short, they made me incredibly proud. Our play spoke to the judges – and we are thankful for that – but the real victory of the day was the attitude and spirit of our students.”

One-Act Competiton Play Takes Home Honors

FPD Participates in Inaugural ASCI One-Act Competition In addition to competing in the regional and state one-act competitions, FPD Theatre also competed in the first-ever Association of Christian Schools International One-Act Festival in Athens, Georgia on November 10.

There the students had the opportunity to hear speakers, participate in the theatre workshops, and fellowship with theatre students from other Christian schools. FPD’s cast and crew presented an amazing performance of Nine Dragons, which was awarded two major honors: Best Ensemble and Best Use of Tech. Ryann Perkins, Daniel Cardis, and Abigail Dean were also named to the All-Star Cast.

FPD’s Spirit of the Vikings Marching Band Takes Home Top Honors at Fall Competitions FPD’s Spirit of the Vikings Marching Band again took home top honors at two band competitions this past fall. The first was the Stateline Showdown in Franklin, Georgia, hosted by Heard County High School on September 29. FPD’s marching band received Superior Ratings in all categories and First Place in Class A. The second competition was the Eagles Nest Invitational at Collins Hill High School in Suwanee, Georgia. There, they received First Place in Class A Competition.

With Grace Morgan Mullis ‘17 has won multiple pageant crowns but what really shines is her love for others and the Lord.

Over the past three years, Morgan Mullis has traveled nationally and internationally competing in various pageants. This past summer she was crowned International Miss Teen and began touring the country. Her upcoming trips include California, Texas, Tennessee, and even international trips to Australia and Dubai.

All the while, Morgan is also enrolled full time at Kennesaw State University where she is pursuing her degree in Early Childhood Education. She is also active with the Children’s Miracle Network and was part of the Peach Bowl Parade on December 29.

While balancing her many responsibilities may be challenging, Morgan says she would not miss this opportunity.

Morgan chooses the particular pageants in which she participates because they value confidence, values, and empowerment of women. As she travels the world representing International Junior Miss, she hopes to impact young people through her platform “BeYOUtiful.”

As we wrapped up the 2017-18 school year, I had many opportunities to stop and reflect on what a busy year it was and quickly realized how thankful I am for each and every one of you! Whether you are a new or current family, a new or previous donor, an alum, a faculty member, a board member or a student – you are a blessing to our school and make FPD a very special place! I feel fortunate to work with a group of constituents who are like minded in supporting the mission of our school: to educate and equip students to change the world for God’s glory.

Under a Georgia state law established in 2008, taxpayers are able to re-direct a portion of their state income tax payment to provide need-based tuition assistance. FPD has partnered with the GOAL Scholarship Program to help facilitate the provisions of the law. This program allows FPD to provide needbased financial assistance to eligible students. God continues to abundantly bless FPD in many ways. During this past year, 875 students were immersed in the Christ centered, college preparatory education that is uniquely FPD. Another 350 students, who were not enrolled at FPD, enjoyed the enrichment offerings of FPD’s Center for Discovery. What a blessing to see over 1,200 students impacted by God’s work through FPD! Financially, God has again revealed his faithfulness as, for the twentyfirst consecutive year, operating fund performance was strong enough to provide for the building of reserves, improving FPD’s cash posture and positioning the school to be among the most financially stable independent schools in Georgia.

Stability indicators include an endowment fund which has grown to $4.6M, a reserve fund balance of $1.1M and a 2017-18 financial performance in which net assets were increased by $177,000. Spending priorities remain in place for twenty-first century learning initiatives, faculty development, student life, facility maintenance, and academic programs. The most mission-critical investment is the one made in FPD faculty and staff. Sixty-nine cents of every tuition dollar goes to fund salaries and benefits for the committed teachers and staff, whose passion for Christ-centered teaching equips FPD students to be world changers.

God has blessed FPD with a powerful needs based tuition assistance program (TAP). We are committed to serve families who desire for their children to be in a Christ centered, college preparatory school and can demonstrate a legitimate financial need. In 2017-18, $1.3M in needs-based assistance was awarded to 311 FPD students, representing 35% of our student population. $234,000 of that was funded by GOAL scholarship donors, easing the stress on the school’s operating budget and making a FPD education possible for 79 students, who couldn’t otherwise afford it.

In God’s providence, FPD continues to have no dependence on annual giving to fund operational expenses like salaries or electricity. Instead, your FPD Annual Fund gift carries a lasting impact and goes to fund capital initiatives that support the school’s mission and have a direct impact on the classroom.

FPD through planned giving. Making a planned gift is a simple way to ensure that the vision of FPD will continue not only today but for generations to come.

There are six ways to join:

Donors who wish to remain anonymous may choose to opt out of membership. Donors who make lifetime gifts totaling $100,000 or more are considered Life Members of the Day School Society.
