From The Headmaster For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.

Psalms 100:5 ESV Dear FPD Parents and Family, As a school family we have much that points us to our Lord’s faithfulness to all generations. Colonel Michael Smith (’85) said it well in his Commencement Address, ‘very rarely does a day go by that I do not think about something that happened in my life that was impacted by my time here. …The foundation that FPD built in my life defined who I am today.”

While we can see the physical changes accomplished through sacrificial gifts of current and previous generations in the FPD family, the generational impact of an FPD education on each individual student and graduate are frequently attested to by our alumni. God uses the faculty and staff, friends and committed parents of FPD to mold boys and girls into future dads and moms and men and women of integrity who serve and lead in their communities to be world changers for God’s glory. God’s faithfulness to generations through a priceless FPD education!

I’m thrilled to announce the gift from Foster Road Properties of 112 acres, 102 of which is in the form of a conservation easement that will provide amazing educational and recreational space for future generations of Vikings and our middle Georgia community.

After we negotiated the purchase of the additional 37 acres to allow for the scope of the Master Plan to be realized (closed in January of 2016) we were approached by Foster Road Properties’ leadership regarding the remaining acreage between the school’s property and Tucker Road. We were privileged to work with them on building into the perpetual conservation easement agreement educational and recreational usage that will enhance our students’ experiences and extend to the community around us. An immediate result will be the extension of the Peake Cross Country Trail into the easement allowing for a two loop 5k course for competition. The Lord is good!

Reflecting back on our school’s history, one quickly sees the seeds planted continue to grow and mature – spiritually, academically and physically – not just to the physical campus; but, most importantly in the lives of the school family that spans generations. It is a privilege for my family and me to have been part of this amazing place where God is at work for 20 years now. To God be the glory!

FPD GRADUATES OF

2017 The Class of 2017 represents the forty-third graduating class in the 47 years of First Presbyterian Day School. Their 87 members were added to create a total of 2,936 FPD alumni.

Haiti, Honduras, Indonesia and Central Asia. They were led by Maggie Renfroe who turned in over 500 hours, and all have truly felt the call and impacted the world for God’s glory.

Some came to us from very close to Calvin Drive and some from nearly 7,000 miles away. Some joined us recently and fourteen have been here since 4K.

They also excelled athletically. They were led by so many classmates, including Senior Male Athlete of the Year, Denson Martin, and Senior Female Athlete of the Year, Kate Patterson.

Last year, they helped lead FPD to a #1 ranking of all single-A private schools in the state as the top overall athletic program.

This year, we again placed in the top 10.

In the classroom, they excelled and have always been a very competitive class. They were led by Valedictorian and STAR Student, Katlyn Smaha, and Salutatorian, Adam Young. They included 48 AP Scholars, 48 Honor Graduates, 49 members of the National Honor Society, and a National Merit Finalist, Tommy Bohan.

They also excelled in service to others. They gave over 16,175 hours of service for the previous four years. That comes out to an average of 186 hours per student when 120 hours was the amount required. They impacted over 100 different agencies and churches and went to places in Georgia, Alabama, Florida, New York, Tennessee, Alaska, Oklahoma, Louisiana, South Carolina, the Bahamas, Mexico, Nicaragua, Guyana, Brazil,

Over their high school careers, they were part of twenty-four region, area, and state champion or runner-up teams. This year they were crowned state champs in softball, shooting team and golf, and a state runner-up in girls soccer.

Several athletes in the class such as Torrian Bradley-McSwain, Wesley Hanson, Thomas McBride, Maggie Moody, and Allie Parkerson signed to compete next year at the college level.

They were also superior in the arts. We were blessed by the visual artwork of AP art students, the theatrical performances

such as Nora’s Lost, Disney’s The Little Mermaid, and Steampunk Romeo and Juliet have left us amazed. The leadership of seniors in our award winning bands, color guard, and dance teams was inspiring. They have truly left a lasting legacy in our Fine Arts Department and upon our school.

Now on to the college side of things.

The Class of 2017 kept our office busy with college applications. They sent out 302 college applications to 95 different colleges in 25 different states and 2 different countries. They will attend 31 different schools in 10 different states and one different country. Thirty-two percent will go to college out of state.

To the Class of 2017 You have been cared for, loved on, supported, nurtured, prayed over, and provided for. You have been given a priceless education, exposed to amazing service opportunities, and encouraged to pursue excellence in both athletics and the arts.

Now is the time to enter the next phase….

Why is FPD a great place to be? Having been a Each year FPD selects several representatives of the senior class to feature in this special graduation edition of the FPD Magazine. Here are their favorite FPD memories and plans for the future.

student at FPD since 4K, it has easily become a place that I call home. I truly cannot imagine a better place to gain an education, simply because at the end of my time here, I will have been given so much more than that. Being a part of the FPD family for fourteen years has equipped me with so many valuable experiences and relationships that I will take with me throughout my life. I truly believe that there is no other institution that could have better prepared me for what lies ahead than First Presbyterian Day School.

How do you feel FPD instilled in you a foundation of faith?

FPD’s faculty has always stood out to me. Each member of the faculty has taken interest in my spiritual well-being. Every one of my teachers and coaches has taken the time to know me as an individual and genuinely build a relationship with me. These personal relationships are where I have found that my foundation of faith and my relationship with Christ is strengthened. Not only have they encouraged me with the scriptures, but they have shared personally their stories of faith in their own lives.

Any advice for underclassmen?

Please don’t wish away your time. Growing up truly does happen so fast. Enjoy each step of your journey at FPD, even the awkward middle school years. One day you will blink and find yourself standing in your cap and gown at graduation wishing it hadn’t gotten here so fast. You may not realize it now but these are some of the best days of your life. John 10:10

College Choice: Texas Christian University Planned Major: Management and Market Analysis

What have you enjoyed most at FPD?

Experiencing the sports at FPD is the memory that I enjoy very much. Coach Middlebrooks and Coach Griffin really helped me find the sports that I love.

Why is FPD a great place to be?

The curriculum at our school is the number one reason. FPD’s academic power is profound because the teachers’ abilities are undoubtedly amazing.

Any advice for underclassmen?

As an international student, I want to give advice to other international students - walk out from your comfort zone, and you will find out that there are so many opportunities which are waiting for you to discover.

Jack is one of FPD’s thirteen international students from China.

He joined FPD as a freshman and is FPD’s first graduating International Student to attend FPD all four years of high school.

College Choice: University of Georgia Planned Major: Biology / Pre-Health

How do you feel FPD has prepared you for college?

FPD has pushed me to my full learning potential, especially Coach A’s AP European class. It’s true, you do have to “work like a sled dog in the Iditarod,” but my classes taught me how to multitask and manage my time wisely.

How do you feel FPD instilled in you a foundation of faith?

I have always considered myself a believer in Christ, but FPD’s faculty has really given me societal strength. What I mean by this is that they have given me a platform to speak candidly about my belief in Christ and instilled a Biblical knowledge within me that allows me to better defend my faith. Whether it be through simply prayer requests or casual conversation, Jesus was not limited to my Bible courses; He was an open topic that seemed to manifest in all my classes.

What have you enjoyed most at FPD?

I enjoyed the limitless opportunities that I was given. FPD connected me with various programs such as Elevate and Future Physicians of America that allowed me to travel around the country and pursue my area of interests. It was almost as if they gave me my own personal window to the world and genuinely wanted me to be exposed and succeed.

Any advice for underclassmen?

To all underclassmen, work as hard as you can from the very beginning because it all comes together in the end! Don’t take this time for granted; make memories and share experiences.

How do you feel FPD has prepared you for college?

How do you feel FPD has prepared you for college?

FPD has done two major things to prepare me for college.

It has greatly strengthened my faith, and it has taught me time management. Due to the diverse exposures to different principles of Christianity, I feel very ready to take on college and maintain my faith. The second is a little more complicated. This year I have not had an off-season in anything and have often had to juggle two or three things at once along with school. This has taught me how to prioritize my assignments and manage my time.

What have you enjoyed most about FPD?

The thing I enjoyed most about being at FPD was the people.

Both faculty and students were always extremely friendly to me. Every one of my teachers has seemed genuinely concerned with my spiritual and physical well-being. Now that my time is coming to a close, I realize just how much I am going to miss feeling like I can go to any teacher, at any time, for anything.

Any advice for underclassmen?

I have two big pieces of advice to give to underclassmen. First, enjoy it. Now that senior year is here, I can honestly say that I would go through another year of school just to be with the people here for a little longer. School makes it really difficult to stay in the present with all of the talk of colleges and the future, but try as hard as you can to stay in the moment and enjoy it. My second piece of advice is to get to know the teachers. Without my teachers to inspire and guide me, I would not have so many doors open for me as I do today.

I feel very blessed to have been given the opportunity to attend a college preparatory high school, and there are many ways in which I know my experience at FPD has equipped me to succeed in college. While I am very grateful for the hard work that has been instilled in me as a student, one of the best ways I feel FPD has prepared me for college is by giving me a firm foundation of faith and values.

Why is FPD a great school?

I believe what makes FPD such an amazing school is the sense of community we have. When times are good we celebrate together, and when times are hard, we mourn together. It’s like a family.

When my dad was sick, the FPD family brought food to us on a weekly basis and had prayer groups for my family. He passed away right before school started, but I still wanted to come to school because I felt comfortable and loved by the people. I will always treasure the Bible the school gifted to my sister and me through that hard time!

Any advice for underclassmen?

The best advice I can offer for underclassmen would be to get involved and say ‘yes’ to all opportunities thrown your way.

Some experiences might seem strange or seem like they will take up too much time, but still say ‘yes!’ All of the mission trips, sports events, pep club activities, and clubs like Project Lead can make high school such a rich and fun experience for you!

How do you feel FPD instilled in you a foundation of faith?

Being able to go to school at a place that encourages me to excel not only on an academic level, but also on a spiritual level, has allowed me to create a background for my faith that will follow me as I go to college and into the real world. It is through the teachers and faculty at FPD that I have been able to see a good example of a strong Christian adult and set a personal goal for my own future.

Why is FPD a great school?

FPD is a great school because it provides each student with the ability to succeed as long as they are willing to work. The best part about FPD is you get out what you put in. There is a course of classes for every type of student, allowing each of us to go as far as we are willing to push ourselves. Having left FPD for four years during middle school due to moving away from Macon, I experienced what it was like to be away from FPD. Needless to say after the fourth year, I was begging my parents to move back to Macon so we could come back to FPD.

Any advice for underclassmen?

I would tell all underclassmen to find what it is they enjoy doing at FPD and go for it. Find the thing you enjoy doing, even if you may be the only one, and do it. I can guarantee you there are other people around you who are waiting for someone to step up and start something new so they can join in. Be a leader, start something new, and be happy doing it.

Mr. Strickland, Members of the Board of Trustees, Mr. Thompson, faculty and staff, parents, and most importantly, the graduating seniors of the Class of 2017, I truly thank you for this opportunity to be a part of today’s celebration.

It’s kind of strange for me to be standing here on a Saturday afternoon. The only interaction I ever had in the past with FPD on a Saturday was pulling Work Detail for Mr. Middlebrooks. Do you still have that? This is a little bit nicer.

When Saynor called me a few months ago and said Mr. Thompson was trying to get in touch with me, I was overcome with fear. My mind filled with nightmares that an audit had found out I did not complete a class or missed too many days, and I was going to have to come back to finish high school. In hindsight, that wouldn’t be such a bad thing.

Once I realized I was invited to speak at this graduation, I took a deep breath of relief. And then a greater fear overtook me. I had thoughts of Mrs. Gibson, my 9th grade English teacher, looking down from Heaven to grade my grammar and presentation. Short story: Mrs. Gibson’s husband was my pastor growing up. He led me to the Lord…but in her English class, Mrs. Gibson taught me the power of prayer!

So, what can a 50-year-old soldier share with you as you get ready to start this next phase of your life? Honestly, not much that you haven’t already heard. You have been raised in an environment where so many people are truly invested in your success. Attending a great school like FPD is such a blessing. You may not realize it now, but you will truly miss this place. I graduated in 1985. Ancient history right? Very rarely does a day go by that I do not think about something that happened in my life that was impacted by my time here. I met my future wife here. Well, I was here, she was at Stratford, but don’t worry, she turned out ok. Many of you know Saynor… well, she set us up on our first date and well, 32 years later, I would say I owe a lot to Saynor. My best friend to this day is my classmate, Craig Bowman. We talk regularly and when we see each other in Macon, it’s like we are still in high school. At least our wives think we still act like we are in high school. Coach Mac was my football coach back then. Today, he is a source of strength and loyalty that stood by my dad as he fought and eventually defeated cancer when he passed earlier this year. And I make no secret that my goal is to one day return to Macon and teach here. So, FPD truly is a lifetime experience.

I do, however, realize that I am expected to give some pearls of wisdom.

As a soldier, we spend a lot of time worrying about where we are in the field. Nothing strikes fear in the heart of a leader like not knowing their exact location on the map. When I was a young second lieutenant in Germany, I was given the privilege of being a platoon leader in an Infantry battalion. We spent a lot of time in the field training and preparing for war. One of my key responsibilities was to navigate my platoon through the woods to set up an Aid Station to receive simulated casualties. It was critical for me to be at the right place at the right time. Now, keep in mind, this is before the days of GPS, Waze, or Google Earth. We had things called a compass and a paper map. The compass always pointed north so you

could orient your map to your surroundings in order to determine where you were. Getting lost was disastrous for an officer. Often, I would have to stop, let my compass orient me north and then go back to the map to determine where I was, and more importantly, where I was going. If I felt confident I had located where I was, I would look back at my Sergeant for reassurance and felt good when he nodded affirmatively at me. Once you learned to trust your map, navigating was pretty easy. When you thought you could do it on your own, without the map, is when you got lost. I take great pride in saying I’ve been lost at some point on five different continents.

As you leave FPD to begin navigating the next phase of your life, you have a map to help you on the journey. God’s Word is the key to staying on course in your life. Psalm 119:35 reads, “Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight.” That short passage says it all. Ask God to direct you, and you will not get lost.

God’s Word is all you need to face anything that will come your way. Over the past 27 years, I’ve navigated across Africa, Iraq, Afghanistan, Korea, and Fort Polk, Louisiana. Imagine trying to navigate across desert terrain at night…no features to orient against, no street signs, blackout conditions (that means no lights on) and a hundred or so soldiers trusting you not to get lost.

As challenging as that was, in hindsight, it seems simple compared to what we have to navigate in our lives. Personal failures, the loss of parents, the loss of friends, and for me the loss of a child is much tougher than navigating in the woods. I will be honest with you - sometimes I didn’t turn back to the map God had provided. I thought I could do it on my own, and often it took something truly terrible to shake me back to my faith. The beauty was, that map God provided never changed, it never failed me, and it was always there when I realized I was lost and needed an affirmative nod of support.

You have a phrase at FPD that I’ve noticed in the alumni mailings, on fundraising emails, and around the school. It reads, “ALL IN.” In small print underneath it, you find Deuteronomy 5:6, “ Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.”

Fairly straightforward guidance, isn’t it? Seems easy enough. In reality, it can be a constant challenge. There are things out there that are always competing for your heart. It is important to remember that those things are temporary. They come and they go. And the more they compete for your heart, the easier it may be to further distance yourself from God. The glorious thing is that the further you push God away, the closer He pulls you to Him, no questions asked. That’s called Grace.

The more I looked at ALL IN, and the Bible verse associated with it, the more I saw the importance in putting this commitment in the forefront of my own life. Kind of funny, isn’t it? I’m here to share words of wisdom with you, and I’m the one who probably gained the most from preparing for today. As you go off to college, I challenge you to carry that ALL IN mindset with you. In your classes, in your work, in your relationships - go All IN, to truly “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” At school or as you start your new career, find those people that share this same belief. Cling to them. Be a positive influence in their lives, and I assure you they will do the same for you. Draw energy from them, and they will help you face the challenges of being on your own for the first time.

FPD has been a “family” of faith for you. Your relationship with this school does not end when you walk off this stage today. Your teachers, the administrators, and your fellow alumni all want to see you succeed.

And they will have your back long after you’ve forgotten anything I’ve said today. They are truly ALL IN for you. I attest that the foundation that FPD built in my life defined who I am today. This school taught me to place my faith in God. It taught me to surround myself with other believers like the one I married 27 years ago. It taught me, especially Mrs. Gibson’s English class, the importance of praying to God and seeking His wisdom.

You are entering into the biggest season of change in your life that you have ever experienced. Change is a good thing. It forces you to step out of your comfort zone and allows you to grow, mature, and build confidence that you can handle this whole “adulting” thing. And as much as your life is about to change, there are some things that never will.

One of those is the love of your parents. I know it doesn’t always seem that way, but yes, your parents truly love you and always will. They want you to succeed and they want you to be content. And yes, they really don’t want you moving back home either. Regardless of your actions, your parents’ love is an unconditional love.

The most powerful constant in your life is the presence of God. In the darkest of times, in the loneliest of places, God is there. He is there to help you stay on path, to not get lost, to find your way home. Even when you refuse that help or convince yourself that no one cares, God is there. If you use God’s Word as your map in life, you will not get lost.

Don’t get me wrong, like every Second Lieutenant in the Army, you will make wrong turns, you will take the wrong road, you will have failures.

But when you trust the map, you can always find your way back to the correct path. Your journey that lies ahead will not always keep you on the right path. You will face challenges, you will face obstacles, and you may encounter others who try to lead you in the wrong direction. But at the end of the day, that map will always get you back where you need to be.

Read it, learn in, and most importantly, trust in it.

As I wrap this up, I want to share a few things I always share with our soldiers when I talk with them. We call them “Safety Briefings,” and as an officer, I can’t truly release you for the weekend without giving one; it’s in the regulations somewhere. I think a lot of them apply to you today: 1. Never pass up the opportunity to sleep. You will work long hours often under very stressful conditions. Sleep will not always be an option - take it when you can. (Well, don’t take it when you are supposed to be in class or at work.)

2. Never pass up a chance to eat. There will be times in college where all you want is a good home-cooked meal. Go home and get it once in a while. And when you do go home, bring some back for your friends.

3. Call home whenever you can. Believe it or not, your parents will worry about you and they will want to hear from you once in a while. Take a few minutes; talk to them. Don’t text them - call. It’s a generational thing.

And don’t only call when you need money. I found the random phone call home often ended with some money showing up in my account. And to be honest, I’ve found that it still works today.

4. Take care of each other. Look out for each other. Be there for each other. Everything is easier when faced with a battle buddy, and as we say in the field, “misery loves company.”

5. Drink water. Being dehydrated leads you to do dumb things, which leads me to my final point...

6. Don’t do dumb things. Remember who you are and don’t bring discredit to the school or yourself. We are Vikings. Don’t damage that.

In closing, five years from now, you will not remember a thing I talked to you about today. I honestly don’t remember who spoke at my graduation.

I do remember Mr. Oliver Bateman handing me my diploma. He was a World War II fighter pilot and decorated veteran. I was honored to shake his hand and he inspired me to join the military.

You will, however, remember your classmates. You will remember your teachers. You will remember FPD. Most importantly, you will remember the Biblical foundation that this great institution, along with your parents, built for you. Remain being ALL IN: ALL your heart, ALL your soul, and ALL your strength. If you do that, it will ALL work out.

Colonel Michael W. Smith has served 27 years as an active duty officer in the United States Army. He has held key staff positions at the Military District of Washington; at Headquarters, Department of the Army; and on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He has commanded at the company, battalion, and brigade level and currently serves as the Director of Healthcare Operations for The Surgeon General.

He is a distinguished graduate from Marine Corps Command and Staff College and completed War College at the National Defense University. He has a Masters of Science in Military History and a Masters of Arts in Strategic Security Affairs.

His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, four awards of the Bronze Star Medal,and the Purple Heart. He has served four combat tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. He is married to his high school sweetheart, Margaret (a graduate of Stratford Academy). They have a daughter, Kathryn, who passed away in 2003 at the age of 9; a son, William, who is a cadet at the United States Military Academy; and a son, Luke, a freshman at Fredericksburg Christian School.

VALEDICTORIAN ADDRESS: Katlyn Smaha My class of 2017, I cannot believe that we’ve finally made it to this morning of red robes, nervous anticipation of receiving our diplomas, and the sight of our red graduation caps flying through the air. Someone once said that usually if you are wearing a robe at 10 a.m. it means that you’ve given up. But for us, I know that is far from the truth, as we have long awaited this final moment of celebration of the fact that we did not give up. I realize that some of you may be ready to grab your diploma and run while others may want to press pause and soak up these final moments together. However, none of you can graduate until I finish, so listen up.

I have a story to tell you. But before beginning, I would like to thank the members of the board, faculty, family and friends whom this day would not be made possible without. The love you have shown us and the roles you have played in shaping who we are today will never be forgotten. You have been with us through both the best and worst times of our lives and though it may seem on a day like this that the tears will never end, Mom, they will. You haven’t gotten rid of us yet.

I know that the purpose of this speech is to encourage you all today—to not give up, to continue kicking it, and to see what specific purpose God has for your life. Therefore, I am going to tell you a quick story of when I literally had to keep kicking it and of why my purpose this summer seems that it will now consist of me saving lives. My friend, some of you may know her—crazy ginger, short, likes to talk me into doing whatever pops into her head like skydiving— decided that it would be a good idea if we became lifeguard certified for this summer. But, before receiving that little piece of paper which reads that I in fact did pass the only class which I thought I would fail, I think I almost drowned.

Mind you I haven’t swam more than a couple of feet maybe since Julie Bragg’s swim class and even then, the instructors had to chase me up the driveway to throw me into the deep end. So, on the first day, when we were required to swim 6 laps, there and back in a 25-meter long pool, needless to say I was hoping either my endurance from running cross country or simply my adrenaline would kick in. I think I needed a reality check. By the third lap, I was doggy-paddling my way across the pool, breathing like someone had just knocked the life out of me, and praying that I did not drown in the very class which I was learning how to save someone from doing so.

So, basically the point of my story is to never follow crazy gingers who think that it would be fun to go save a 200-pound man—that is, our instructor— from drowning in 30-degree freezing waters. But, hey at least the swimsuits are cute.

No, that is actually not my point.

While it is easy to feel happy on a day of celebration like today and forget about our worries, there will be times when you feel like you are drowning in waters deeper than those in which I almost did. My advice to you is that, when it is needed the most, there is hope - something 1 year at FPD (or 14 years in my case will give you.)

As we look around here today, at all of the people who helped make us who we are, it may feel like we are saying goodbye but we will carry a piece of each other into everything we do next, to remind us of where we come from and who we aspire to be.

COLLEGE CHOICE: UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA

The faculty at FPD have the power to change this world for God’s glory one student at a time, and along with the teachers, coaches, and our parents, it is you, my Class of 2017, who have made us whole and who have kept us from not giving up in times of adversity. Whether that is due to our supercompetitive nature or the real support and love we show for each other, I’ll leave for everyone else to decide. After four years together, maybe fourteen for some, we are a family. While we do share specific memories with specific people, all together we hold a special bond to this school and will never forget the faces which we see today.

I believe that it is a known fact that our class has a reputation for kindness, respect, talent, and intelligence. There is no jealously or malice, and the love we radiate as a class is unmatched. We look up to each other. I mean who doesn’t want to be able to get red cards like Kate Patterson can? Eat as many wings as Thomas can on Wing Night? Or swim a 300 like Hanny can as a warm up?

Even though we looked up to each other for so many reasons, we are all our own person—the person God made us—and nothing can change that. After graduating, I encourage you to follow your passion and stay true to yourself.

‘Never follow anyone else’s path, unless you’re in the woods and you’re lost and you see a path. Then, by all means you should follow that.’ But, that’s actually a piece of advice I took from Ellen, so don’t quote me on that.

As cliché as it may sound, my last wish for you is to never stop fighting for what you believe in. Don’t give up on yourself and don’t give up on each other.

These brief four years in high school were just that—brief, but I hope that you will take them with you, remembering the lessons you learned and the people you met. Specific to our class, I hope that you remember there is not a shortcut to happiness, but forming relationships with others is one step closer to the world God first had in mind. And even if everything does not work out as perfectly as you planned, what better way is there to live?

That’s it. I will miss you all very much and wish you the best of luck until we meet again. Thank you.

SALUTATORIAN ADDRESS: Adam Young Welcome to the First Presbyterian Day School Class of 2017’s Commencement Ceremony! It is an immense honor to speak to our class, our faculty, administration and board members, our friends, and families; to all of you who have shaped our lives, thank you for being here today!

I would like to start with a memory that we, as a class, have made together, to show you who we are. As freshman, we made a colossal effort to show our devotion to our class and school during Spirit Week. We recruited class members to participate, trained rigorously for relays, rehearsed lip sync routines for weeks, and labored at making our “America” theme in our hallway. We were confident. We knew we would win. Everyone in the school knew we would win, too. And then we lost. We were outraged!

In fact, we all decided to boycott classes and sit in the hallways as a sign of our solidarity. We didn’t, but for a moment we felt the strength of our unity in our resolve. All of us—scholars, athletes, musicians, artists, actors, hunters, jokers—“All in”-- as they say. We felt that loss as a family. We had learned that we are all God’s children, and just like a family, we found we all have a part to play. Together, we were strong!

We have always been open to accepting others and growing our family.

Throughout this year, the Senior Lounge has been our home. It is where

Senior Year. I say this as a refugee from another school in 6th grade. This Inclusion has made us special and unique as a class and as a school. I know everyone in high school has their ups and downs. Let’s be honest - friendships form and dissolve, but ultimately, like a family, we strain against each other as we grow and change, but the foundation is still there.

We have unique memories of one another. I will always look back fondly and remember obsessing over sea otters with Anna Claire, pestering Kat about what work we have, or piling into Bercik’s car. Yes, these memories are mine, but there are many more that exist between my fellow classmates that they can all just remember and smile about. We have had rough times too, but we pushed through them together and came out more tightly knit than even before. We all shared the same worries about what college we are going to, and we all comforted one another just when we needed it most.

or “Working like sled dogs in the Iditarod,” Mrs. Scott chasing everyone around for community service hours, or Coach Brad Thompson - with the patience of a saint, and “Doctor Professor” Coach Latimer in the college office? They never let us down with transcripts, reminding us of deadlines, and helping us on the path to college. Coaches have prayed with us, joked with us, hoped with us, and cheered us on; some have given us grace— thank you Coach Moore! Teachers have spent countless hours explaining difficult concepts—but most especially pouring their hearts into us so that we may fulfill FPD’s mission statement to change the world for God’s glory.

Like Jesus, they loved us even when we were not lovable.

Then there are our own parents. They pushed us to do our best, worried for us, and paid for this fine education. Thank you everyone for making this class our family. I hold all of you in my heart, as you hold everyone else in your hearts as well. Thank you.

Our family includes the faculty and staff, as well. Who could forget our principal, Mr. Kitchell? I know him to be fair, merciful, full of grace, and snarky. We have some memorable teachers. Who will forget, “Guys, guys!”

FPD’s new

Acre Woods

Gift of land expands FPD’s footprint to 240 acres

W

hen First Presbyterian Day School opened in 1970 it was on a small parcel of land “way out in the suburbs.” Over the last forty-seven years, those initial ten acres have continued to grow, each time an indication of God’s providence and direction. In February 2017, FPD’s footprint grew exponentially with a generous gift of 112 acres on the south side of campus, donated by Foster Road Properties. One hundred and two of those acres are in the form of a conservation easement.

“We are beyond grateful for this wonderful gift,” said FPD Headmaster, Gregg Thompson. “The main reason Foster Road Properties considered donating the land to FPD was the community-oriented perspective set forth in our Master Plan. This was a phenomenal, unexpected outcome of the forward-thinking that went into the Master Planning process.”

The land complements the direction laid out in FPD’s Master Plan adopted just a few months prior to the gift. It lies adjacent to the sports complex proposed by the Master Plan on the south side of campus, stretching east to west from Foster Road to Interstate 475 and north to south from the edge of our current Peake Cross Country Trail to Tucker Road.

The majority of the land is designated a Conservation Easement, managed by North American Land Trust. As a Conservation Easement, there are certain parameters and guidelines for how the land can be used. Minimal development is allowed to protect the land and its conservation values. Within the woods lie several habitats recognized as High Priority Habitats by the Georgia State Wildlife Action Plan and therefore protected. These amazing environments will offer unparalleled educational opportunities for FPD students.

“Our 102 acres of forest and wetlands will be a great place for studying nature and practicing environmental stewardship,” notes Dr. Barry Shealy, FPD’s Assistant Headmaster. “Nature study helps students build observation and reasoning skills, a sense of wonder at God and His creation, and provides a strong foundation for future study of science.”

When the property is ready to be accessed, students will be able to follow winding trails to explore the plant and animal life first-hand, learning how to identify the various trees, plants, and animal dwellings. The trails would be open to the public for hiking and biking, and possibly a future ropes course.

“Our goal with the land is to develop conservation-minded elements that provide educational opportunities, not only for our students, but the community as a whole,” says Mr. Thompson.

As owners of this conservation easement, FPD will be responsible for maintaining good stewardship of the land and care for it in its natural state. North Atlantic Land Trust will perform annual audits to make sure the plant and animal life is thriving and any development is within the guidelines of the agreement. A good bit of work still has to be done to prepare the land for public use. Our school families and the public will be notified when it is accessible.

“The long-lasting impact of this beautiful property is immense,” concludes Mr. Thompson. “It’s an amazing blessing from the Lord.”

Leaving Three legendary FPD faculty retire after a combined 97 years of service.

FPD first opened its doors to students in 1970. Since then, many things have changed. However, the quality of faculty and staff that FPD employs has not. Year in and year out, the excellent teachers are a favorite part of attending school here for both parents and students. This year, three teachers are joining the ranks of FPD Legends, those who have invested in the school and students for over 25 years. The FPD Saga staff took a few minutes to talk to each of these Legends and hopes to honor their years of service and all of the students who have loved them throughout the years.

33 years of service Coach Turner truly is legendary here at FPD. Anyone who has been in his class or on one of his teams would describe him simply with one word: unforgettable. Coach Turner is a source of encouragement, laughter, and wisdom for everyone around him - students and fellow faculty members alike. He is a shining example of how to model everyday life after Christ and not taking yourself too seriously. Students in his class will never forget softball signals, what C.S.O.P stands for, or lyrics to popular Christian songs. Coach Turner’s favorite thing about coaching and teaching at FPD has been influencing students for Christ. He has certainly done that and more. FPD is undoubtedly a better place because of him, and he will be dearly missed on campus. Coach, thank you doesn’t even begin to cover it!

28 years of service AP Government teacher Mrs. Roberts claims to be the “baby” of this retiring group of legends, but her impact on FPD has been one that will last for decades to come. This teacher is known to students by her high standards, but those standards made students love her all the more. She hopes that “students remember that she prayed for them regularly, challenged them daily because [she] believed in their abilities, and set the bar high because [she] knew they could reach it.” Mrs. Roberts’s influence reaches far and wide. She shines in her love for Christ and through her love of history and government. Mrs. Roberts hopes that students will remember to be informed voters and to think of her when they visit the polls.

Students and faculty alike will remember her during those times and many more.

36 years of service Mrs. Anderson has been at FPD for many years, and her service is widely recognized. She is a familiar, smiling face on campus. Her quiet grace and gentle voice calms students and allows them to experience her love of foreign languages.

Current eighth grade student Avery Kemper admires Mrs. Anderson because, “she has taught so long but still cares, loves, and eagerly helps each student.” Mrs. Anderson’s passion for languages has been passed along through generations of students. Years from now, students will remember her willingness to help students and her desire for students to understand the concept or the word, even if it meant extra time in the classroom for her. No one will ever forget her friendly “hola” or “bonjour.” Mrs. Anderson, FPD is so thankful for you, your love for students, and the Christ-like example you set daily.

How to put technology in its proper place during summer break - Dr. Barry Shealy, FPD Assistant Headmaster

S

pring Break this year gave Laurie and me a welcome opportunity to reconnect with our USMC pilot son and his wife in Southern California. After our visit, we spent three days at Grand Canyon National Park. That visit followed fall hikes in Rocky Mountain and Great Smoky Mountains National Parks. Anyone who knows me probably knows my love of the outdoors and understands how close to heaven I felt. Pictures cannot do justice to the majesty of the Pacific Coast, mountains, desert, canyons, and dark skies we were blessed to experience. The colorful pallet of spring desert flowers, fall aspens, and sunsets painting on the canvas of canyon walls fill the spirit.

I have always enjoyed sharing nature with children and youth. Our nature trails, instructional garden, ponds, and new forest preserve are some of the most valuable physical assets God has granted FPD. The foundation of Christian education is the creation mandate God gave us to care for the world and see to its appropriate use and to fill the world with His image (Genesis 1:26-31). Experiencing creation allows our children to learn more about our vocational responsibility and encounter God (Romans 1:20).

The devotional aspect of encountering God’s creation is vividly expressed in Scripture. “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands” (Ps 19:1). Mountains, rivers, and trees singing and clapping their hands, filled with joy, is a common image in scripture (Isaiah 55:12; Psalm 98:7-8; cf., Psalm 8) expressing God’s sovereignty and faithful providence. As Job said, if you want to recognize God’s hand in action, “ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you” (Job 12:7-8).

The Proper Place of Technology As Laurie and I made the rounds of our Southwestern sights, I thought about how I used my smartphone. Of course, I made sure it was charged and carried a mobile charger just in case.

However, I was mindful of the admonition we give our study abroad students in Italy. We ask them not to experience their trip only through a screen. We want them to take in a slow and patient sketch of any scene around them, experiencing the whole context before packaging it into a more contentimpoverished Instagram snapshot for friends back home. Andy Crouch, in Tech-Wise Families, says that one of technology’s places is helping “us cultivate awe for the created world we are part of and responsible for stewarding.” It is out of its proper place, Crouch says, “when it keeps us from engaging the wild and wonderful natural world with our senses” (21).

My smartphone helped me keep track of where we were (although I am a physical map lover), identify plants and animals, find stars and identify satellites, and check up on historical questions (although I tried to save those questions for later.)

Clearly, I hope this article encourages families to get out and experience the outdoors, contemplating God and our place in His world. However, I also hope we will think about the place of technology in all our activities. God has given us the technological tools we use. Any tool can be used in a productive and edifying way or in harmful and destructive ways. Crouch mentions several other ways technology can be in and out of place in our families beyond appreciating nature.

He also notes that technology does not get into its proper place on its own. We must use it with intention and care or “we will end up with quite an extraordinary mess.”

Crouch says technology is in its proper place when it is: • Helping us to bond with real people around us versus people at a distance, like celebrities, whom we will never meet; • Starting great conversations versus preventing us from talking with and listening to one another; • Helping us develop knowledge and skills versus replacing this development with passive consumption; • Helping us take care of our bodies versus seeking to escape our limits and vulnerabilities. (20-21)

Commitments for Healthy Technology Use In his book, Crouch provides help in thinking about the use of technology by describing ten commitments based on three choices. The foundational choices that “nudge” us in healthy directions are to choose to focus on character development,

shape space to promote proper use of technology, and structuring our time (38-39). Three of the commitments Crouch describes stand out for me.

I appreciate Crouch’s admonition that families focus on developing character together. One commitment resonated strongly with me. He suggests shaping the space in our homes so that the center is focused on activities that “reward skill and active engagement” and that help us “create more than we consume” (41). For example, Crouch emphasizes the value of making music rather than simply listening. Building and creative play were always a big part of our family’s life. Hours were spent with Lego, Playmobil, and other construction toys and action figures (and cleaning them up.) This is play that requires work and rewards time and effort. Choose activities that participants can get better at by practice. Games have been an important activity for our family. Risk, Settlers of Catan, Chess, Mancala, Scrabble, Monopoly, a panoply of card games, and a host of others have occupied our time.

Other families may invest their creative play outdoors hunting and fishing or in organized sports. A wealth of character development can take place during gameplay (including how to win and lose well.)

Crouch advocates using technology together and for a purpose rather than aimlessly and alone. Set aside time for engaging others as well as our surroundings in purposeful activity.

Another of Crouch’s commitments is based on the biblical idea of Sabbath rest. He suggests having a natural cycle of work and rest, including rest from technology. His family has one hour a day, one day a week, and one week a year that they go technology free. There is value in disconnecting to reconnect.

Plan for reconnecting with those around us, with the world around us, and with God. So, what will you do this summer?

Whether your activity for growth, character development, and togetherness includes sports, games, natural and historic sites, travel, or reading, I hope you will spend time intentionally thinking about character development together. Talk about your activities with your children. Discuss the books they read.

Maybe choose a book for your family to read together. Discuss current events. Reflect on God’s providence. Use technology as a tool to enhance this experience for your family and God’s glory rather than a focal point.

Standing at the Desert View Watchtower taking in one last vista before leaving Grand Canyon National Park, I was brought to tears as I noticed a plaque with Psalm 66:4 – “All the earth worships Thee; they sing praises to Thee; sing praises to Thy name.”

Three Students Graduate with New Diploma Endorsements Three members of FPD’s class of 2017 will graduate with new diploma endorsements. Ruth Samuel and Adam Young will each graduate with a STEM endorsement, and Jansen Oliver will On Campus graduate with a fine arts endorsement.

“FPD has numerous students with advanced talent and time commitment in STEM and fine arts programs,” commented FPD Assistant Headmaster, Dr. Barry Shealy. “These three students have taken their understanding and involvement to the next level.”

For her practicum and culminating senior experience, Ruth Samuel shadowed at a local OB-GYN practice and then presented on the “Long-term Pain Risks after Epidural Anesthesia for Women above the Age of 30.”

Adam Young studied DNA at Emory University and then presented on the “Efficacy of the 1.3’3 Plc B Primer for Use in Elucidation of the HIV-1 Genetic Bottleneck in Heterosexual Transmission.”

To earn his fine arts endorsement, Jansen Oliver gave extensively of his time and talents on the bass, performing in the FPD Praise Band, Jazz Band, and the praise band at his church. He was named to the GMEA District XI Honor Jazz Band multiple years and won the 2017 FPD John Philip Sousa Band Award for leadership and talent.

First Presbyterian Day School introduced the STEM and fine arts diploma endorsements at the beginning of the 2016-17 school year. Diploma endorsements are a way to recognize students with strong interests in STEM or the fine arts who have a substantial co-curricular commitment in those areas. They support students as they explore continuing study and involvement and are an indication to colleges and universities that the student is prepared and dedicated to study in their respective area.

“Not only have these students gained notable recognition,” said Dr. Shealy, “but through the process, they have also been better prepared for the rigors of college coursework.”

Ruth, who was also named a Morehead-Cain Scholar, plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Adam will attend Emory University, and Jansen will attend Berry College.

Named Teacher of the Year FPD is very honored to award the 2017 Teacher of the Year award to Lisa Spear. To be eligible, a teacher must have taught at FPD for at least three years and be nominated by his/her teaching peers, student leaders or a member of the Board of Trustees.

The Teacher of the Year award is given in memory of Mr. William Harris Bragg. Steve and Ginger Bragg wanted to remember their dad in a way that recognizes an FPD teacher’s commitment to honor Christ and make a difference in students’ lives. The criteria for selection include: christian character, professional excellence, concern for students, and commitment to our school.

Graduation Athletics

New

& Peake Cross Country Trail Expansion As the 2016-17 year came to a close, FPD started gearing up for some exciting new updates for our tennis and cross country programs. One of the initial projects noted in the FPD Master Plan was a new tennis complex to replace the current courts that were damaged by weather and now not suitable for matches. Likewise, the Peake Cross Country Trail needed an expansion and event space to accommodate cross country meets on campus.

Construction will begin this summer and these two projects will be realized during the next academic year.

“This is a huge step for our tennis and cross country programs,” said FPD Head Tennis and Cross Country Coach, Derek Lashley. “Our tennis teams have done a phenomenal job the past two seasons despite having to play all events off-

campus and it has been a long-time goal to host cross country meets on campus. To have both of the projects take shape in the same year is a blessing.”

Through the generosity of several friends and families, FPD now has over 70% of the funds needed for the new courts as well as the funds needed for the trail expansion. Construction crews will start clearing and grading the property this summer in preparation for building the courts in the fall.

The current plan for the tennis complex includes eight new courts. Adjacent to the tennis courts, the expansion of the FPD Peake Cross Country Trail will provide for a two-loop 5K course, suitable for high school and middle school cross country meets, and an event field that will allow FPD to host

FPD’s baseball teams were able to enjoy new covered batting cages this season thanks to designated Annual Fund dollars given by many generous donors. The covered batting cages are a muchanticipated addition for the teams so they can practice more consistently and without disruption when it rains.

The renovated cages consist of a 40’ by 75’ covered hitting area.

Within this covered area are two 70’ hitting tunnels and two full size bullpens. Surrounding nets will also expand to provide 3,000 square feet of turf area to perform drills.

Golf Team Captures FPD’s Third State Championship for the 2016-17 Academic Year!

Capturing FPD’s first Golf State Title since 1979, the Viking Boys Golf Team completed a whirlwind year of athletic play at FPD. With a team score of 289, the Vikings were awarded the 2017 GHSA Class-A Private State Championship on Tuesday morning, May 23, at Green Island Country Club in Columbus, Georgia.

Battling rain and weather delays on Monday, the Vikings still came through in the clutch. Luke Dasher led the Vikings with a 1-under 70. Wilson Andress finished with a 1-over 72, while Wesley Hanson carded a 2-over 73. FPD’s final counting score came via Jay Spivey, who finished at 3-over-par for a 74.

FPD’s golf program has experienced a phenomenal season. The Vikings posted a team-best 289 (1-over par) to take the Area Championship at Healy Point Country Club on April 25 and qualify for State after finishing second for four straight years.

The Lady Vikings also secured a spot at the State Tournament with a third place finish.

In boys competition, Wesley Hanson was low medalist and AllArea with a 2-under 70 at the Area Tournament. Luke Dasher

fired a 1-under 71 as well. Wilson Andress (74) and Jay Spivey (74) rounded out the scoring for the Vikings. All four of the aforementioned were named to the All-Area Team. In girls play, Cassidy Pearson placed third individually to earn a spot on the All-Area Team.

The FPD Golf Program graduates four seniors: Alex Odom, Alan Carlton, Wesley Hanson, and Cassidy Pearson. Hanson has signed to play golf at Valdosta State University.

The boys golf team was also named All-Middle Georgia Boys Golf Team of the Year by the Macon Telegraph, and Hanson was named All-Middle Georgia Golfer of the Year.

The golf state championship rounds out three state titles and one state runner-up for FPD sports in 2016-17. The varsity softball team picked up its first GHSA State Championship and the Clay Target Shooting Team was awarded the GISA General Division State Championship. FPD’s girls soccer team finished as state runner-up in May.

WINTER & SPRING SPORTS RECAP BOYS BASKETBALL The FPD varsity boys basketball team picked up its first GHSA Class-A State Tournament victory this past winter, a 62-55 victory over Riverside Military on Feb. 18.

The Vikings advanced to the Sweet 16 round of the State Tournament before falling to Athens Christian on the road 58-55. Armaun Smith paced the Vikings in scoring on the year, averaging 11.3 points per game.

Smith, Maurice Gordon and Henry Middlebrooks were named to the All-Region 7 Team. The Vikings graduate one senior, Caleb Kelly.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Under the direction of John Griffin, the Lady Vikings advanced to the GHSA Class-A State Tournament for the fourth time in program history. FPD fell in the Sweet-16 to the Prince Avenue Lady Wolverines 47-32. The Lady Vikings finished as the RunnerUp in the Region 7 Tournament in 2017.

FPD’s Kate Patterson, who was named to the All-Region 7 Team, surpassed 1,000 career points on Dec. 27 v. Locust Grove, becoming the 11th member of the 1,000 point club at FPD. For her career, Patterson totaled 1,231 points, good for fourth place on the all-time scoring list at FPD. FPD graduates three seniors: Patterson, Emma Lako and Bailey Ruble. All three were named to the All-Region 7 Team. Patterson was also tabbed as an All-Middle Georgia Honorable Mention by the Macon Telegraph.

SWIMMING With head coach Elizabeth Leslein at the helm, the Vikings and Lady Vikings continued to improve in GHSA play. The Vikings took first place in five out of nine meets while the Lady Vikings finished first in three meets, including the Middle Georgia Championship on January 20.

Vivianna Chang competed in the 100 Freestyle and the 100 Back Stroke for the Lady Vikings at the GHSA State Meet at Georgia Tech on Feb. 3. For the first time in program history, both the Vikings and Lady Vikings sent a relay team to the State Meet. Lindsay Strickland, Sophie Seneker, Madelyn Baltz and Chang competed in the Girls 200 Freestyle Relay. Alex Bercik, Dane Wiggins, Austin Murray and Hanny Marone were participants in the Boys 200 Freestyle Relay.

Chang was named All-Middle Georgia Swimmer of the Year by the Macon Telegraph at the end of the season for the second year in a row.

WRESTLING Under the leadership of Coach Ken Garvin, the 2016-2017 Wrestling Team continued to thrive. The Vikings placed fourth at Area Duals, third in the Bibb County Championships, and fifth at Area Traditionals. At Area Traditionals, Alan Carlton took home fourth, Seth Wilson walked away with third, and Denson Martin placed first. Martin went on to state, placing sixth.

The FPD Wrestling Program graduates seniors Martin, Carlton, Tyler Kelly, Hugh Moody, Hunter Boyle, Jonathan Canipe, and Thomas McBride.

LACROSSE In its first full season as a varsity sport, the Vikings gained some valuable experience under head coach Kristy Alvarez.

FPD picked up its first victory as a varsity squad on Feb. 24, a 16-6 win over Mount de Sales. Other victories included Fayette (16-5), South Cobb (15-5), Islands High School (7-6) and Mount de Sales again in the Area Tournament (8-6).

GYMNASTICS Under head coach Chelsea Latimer, the FPD varsity gymnastics team completed its fourth season of competition in 2017.

With 10 gymnasts participating, the team expanded its program to include sixth grade for the first time. The season ended with Heather Smaha qualifying for the State Preliminary Meet on floor.

The future is bright for the Lady Vikings. The entire squad will return for the 2018 season.

TRACK & FIELD Head coach Walker Middlebrooks paced the Vikings to a third place finish and the Lady Vikings took fourth at the GHSA Class-A Private Area Meet on April 21. Sadie Frame picked up the High Point Award at the Area Meet as well.

Titus Moore qualified for State in the long jump and the 110 hurdles and Robert Johnson in triple jump. Sadie Frame qualified for State in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles while Christiny Reeves solidified a spot at state in the long jump. Moore was also named to the Macon Telegraph’s All-Middle Georgia Track Team.

BASEBALL

TENNIS

The FPD varsity baseball team had a rebuilding season under thirdyear head coach Denny Bryant. The Vikings jumped out to a 9-2 start during the first month of the regular season, but finished 4-13 down the final 17 games of the season.

The Lady Vikings and Vikings had another impressive season under head coach Derek Lashley. The Lady Vikings (15-5) finished third at the Area-1 Private Tournament before falling in the first round of the State Tournament at Holy Innocents’. The Vikings (16-4) took Runner-Up at the Area-1 Private Tournament and fell in the first round of the State Tournament vs. Paideia.

The Vikings advanced to the GHSA Class-A Private State Tournament for a seventh straight season and fell to Calvary Day School 2-0 in a best-of-three game series.

Gavin Bloodworth was named to the The Macon Telegraph’s AllMiddle Georgia Baseball Second Team. Vikings graduate seniors Austin Hartley, Tee Turley, and E.J. Tobler from the 2017 squad.

GIRLS SOCCER The FPD varsity girls soccer team finished as the GHSA Class-A Runner-Up, falling in the State Title match to Wesleyan 4-1 at Mercer University’s Five Star Stadium on May 12.

Maggie Moody, Ruth Samuel, Camden Lashley, and Christian Tinkey were all named to the Area-1 Team. Moody also signed a national letter of intent to play collegiate tennis at Piedmont College following the end of the season.

Moody, Samuel, Tinkey and Parker White were all named to the Macon Telegraph’s All-Middle Georgia Tennis Team.

The Lady Vikings and Vikings graduate seniors Maggie Moody, Ruth Samuel, Katlyn Smaha, Yuka Yokoyama, and Will Sun.

Prior to the State Championship match, FPD allowed just one goal on the year in 22 matches. FPD also picked up the Area-2 Title, their sixth in GHSA program history and ninth overall.

The Lady Vikings have been a model of consistency since moving to the GHSA in 2010. FPD has appeared in the State Title match four times, winning twice. The Lady Vikings have also advanced to the Final Four six times during the past seven seasons.

Mia Ferro was named All-Middle Georgia Girls Soccer Player of the Year by the Macon Telegraph. Coach Josh Trieste picked up AllMiddle Georgia Soccer Coach of the Year. Players selected for the Macon Telegraph’s All-Middle Georgia First Team include Emma Lako, Jansyn Samples, Kate Patterson, and Mia Ferro. had thirteen goals and nine assists, leading the team in steals as she helped lead the Vikings to the GHSA Class 1A championship game. In basketball, she averaged 16 points and 8.7 rebounds, capping a career in which she was a four-year starter and a three-year captain.

Patterson was also involved with numerous service opportunities including teaching at Casa Hogar in the summer, spearheading basketball camps for children at Campus Clubs, and serving with FPD’s Project Lead team.

Patterson was named FPD’s 2017 Senior Female Athlete of the Year. Next year she will attend the University of Arkansas.

Fine Arts Behind the scenes of FPD’s Department of Fine Arts Production of

FPD’s Department of Fine Arts presented an amazing production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, March 9, 10, and 11, 2017. The colorful, underwater adventure achieved record sales with two sell-out performances. And while the stones seemed to shimmer peacefully in the water, and the fish and mermaids seemed to glide effortlessly (using wheely shoes!), the production was a huge undertaking involving new lighting techniques, a new animated projection backdrop, and over 70 students. From cast members, dancers, band members, technicians, and set designers, the production was carefully orchestrated to leave the audience wishing they could be a “part of their world.”

Included are some comments from some of the students who were part of this outstanding performance.

Will Reeves, 11th Grade, Theatre Technician How does it feel to be part of a sell-out production? I’ve been involved in theatre since fifth grade and have never seen a sold-out show until this year. It added a lot of stress to the technical side because any mistakes affect a larger audience; however, with more people the greater the reward when everything goes right. Thanks to a skilled tech crew, fantastic actors, an amazing band, and the best director, we were able put on one of the best performances to date in the FPD theatre department.

What makes a production this large challenging, yet fun?

The technical side of our musical productions provide numerous challenges, the biggest factor being the sheer number of actors involved in a show of this size. One of the greatest challenges I face as a theater technician are the microphones. We ran 18 personal microphones in the Little Mermaid, not including the 3 overhead mics used in the ensemble songs. However when all goes well, they become the most rewarding part, allowing the audience to better enjoy the show and better highlighting the talent of our actors.

Mary Bennet Rose, 11th Grade, Sebastian How does it feel to be part of a sell-out production? Being a part of a sell-out production is insanely humbling, but it totally gives you an ego boost at the same time. I say that because all these people are here to see the work of high school and middle school.

What is your favorite part about being an actress in FPD theatre? My favorite part of acting at FPD is that I get the chance to do something I love and find these wonderful characters and become a part of this little family at the same time.

John Drinkwater, 11th Grade, Orchestra What is the most challenging part of being in an orchestra for a live musical production? Being able to sync up with the actors is difficult, and often times I have to switch instruments quickly with no time to rest. However, playing really cool music and performing the shows is the best part of the musicals How does it feel to be part of a sell-out production? Being a part of a sell-out production is really gratifying. It shows how much the people love to see musicals they know from their childhood stories and how much they enjoyed the show.

Betsy Middlebrooks Peake, Jana Howells Cansler, Carla Kemper Morton continue their yearly tradition of a girls beach trip to St. Simons Island since their senior class graduation in 1980.

Frank Talbot was recently promoted to Acting Chief Assistant United States Attorney for the Jacksonville Division of the Middle District of Florida. Frank has been a federal prosecutor in Jacksonville for the past fifteen years. Frank is married to Cathy Talbot and they have three children, twins, Thomas and Craft (17) and Elizabeth (10). The Talbots are frequent visitors to Disney.

Kim Weaver Hope and her family live in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Her husband, Josh, is a special education teacher in Monroe, North Carolina, and she is a mathematics instructor at Winthrop University in Rock Hill. They have three children - Camden, a junior at the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics; Bailey, a junior at Rock Hill High; and Sawyer, a third grader at Providence Classical.

1995 Betsy Epps Smith graduated from the University of Georgia on May 5 with a Doctor of Public Health degree. She will use this degree to continue her career at Mercer University School of Medicine where she has been employed for the past thirteen years.

1983 Dimy Kendrick-Holmes Mixon earned a Masters of Marriage & Family Therapy from Mercer University School of Medicine in 2012. She is currently a Licensed Associate Marriage & Family Therapist for Perspectives Counseling, Inc. in Atlanta, Georgia. She is married to Tom Mixon Jr., and they have a son, Tommy (22), and a daughter, Garrett (21).

Al Ream was printed in Mt. Hope, New York for the third year by the Society of Classical Poets, in their yearly journal. He is also under consideration by a magazine, Urban Hive.

1988 Suzanne Fuchs Davis finished her twentyfifth year of teaching and completed her ESOL endorsement (English Language Learners) in Spring 2017. Her certification requires her to be nomadic, so she will be packing up and moving classrooms for the fifteenth time since joining the Monroe County School System. She writes, “I am blessed with a wonderful husband, Brooks, as well as three four-legged children, Ellie, Lucy, and Mickey. Life is good!”

1997 Josh Powell and his wife, Betsy, relocated to Asheville, North Carolina in March 2017.

Josh is Manager of Pharmacy Operations for Mission Health System and Betsy began her career as a nurse practitioner for a private practice in Asheville.

Patti Laurens Downs and her husband, Justin, welcomed their son, Jefferson “Jeffrey” William Downs. He was born April 7, 2017 and was 7 pounds, 14 ounces, 21 inches long. The Downs are living on St. Simons Island and love being new parents!

Syd and Jennifer Adams Rives have been married for seven years and have one daughter, Riley. Syd is the executive ambassador for sales for Spro International, a premier fishing tackle company. Syd writes, “I enjoy fishing, of course, but alternative history novels are my favorite along with my newest hobby, spelunking. As a new member of the Aichi bass fishing association, I have also become fluent in Japanese and Asian culture.”

Lyndsay Roberts Rushing and husband, Nate, welcomed a baby boy, Drake Mills, on April 28, 2017. He weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces and was 20 ½ inches long.

2002 Ken Smith and his wife, Amanda, welcomed a new baby girl, McKenna Joy, on November 17, 2016. She joins big sister, Lacey.

Mary Jo Causey Simmons and her husband, Matt, welcomed Matthew Richard Simmons Jr. on April 24, 2017. He joins his big sisters, Anna Cate, and Olivia “Livie” James.

2000 Carlie Bridges Martin and her husband, Anders, welcomed their third little boy, Hayes, in March 2017. Carlie writes, “He is such a joy to our family, and we are so grateful that the Lord has blessed us with him!”

Lindsay McGrail West lives in Savannah with her husband, Mikell, and their two children, Alan (4) and Madeline (1). Lindsay teaches online high school forensics with the Georgia Cyber Academy.

1999 Tiffany Thompson Buckthal earned her Masters of Education in educational leadership, summa cum laude, from the University of West Florida in Pensacola.

She completed this degree while being a stay-at-home mother with her children, Bradley (9), Chandler (6), and Sadie (3).

She plans on returning to her education career when her youngest child begins kindergarten.

2001 Ashley Mize Alderman and her husband, Brandon, are expecting identical twin boys in July! They will join big brothers, Baylor (5) and Bowen (2).

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Brad Whitfield, ‘99

All In Mentoring

rad Whitfield exemplifies FPD 2016-17 school motto - “All In.” Three years ago, Brad was asked by the founder Xcel, a youth development program in Savannah, to join the program as a mentor. The founder, Jay Thompson, had a vision for a program that would reach young men who lacked a father figure role in their lives and mentor them, provide them with a network for jobs, and help them pursue their goals.

2004 Robert Cabe and his wife, Becky, welcomed a new baby girl, Georgia Lee, on May 1, 2017.

She joins big brother, Bobby.

Kris Hattaway Vaughn was named one of Georgia Trend’s “40 Under 40” for 2016. She and her husband, Ben, moved to Monroe County and in December welcomed their daughter Hattaway “Hattie” Elizabeth. Kris currently serves as the Executive Director of a statewide nonprofit, GeorgiaForward.

She and Ben are members of the Leadership Georgia Class of 2017 and are active members of Mulberry Street United

Brad, a Partner at Coastal Consulting Management group, would lead a financial stewardship section of the program. He discussed his financial philosophy with the boys and stressed the importance of avoiding financial pitfalls such as short-term loans and title pawns.

He found it to be a natural fit and soon realized that it was more of a calling than he initially thought. After one year of mentoring, he joined the board of Xcel to continue his involvement and help steer the direction of the organization.

Still continuing as a mentor, Brad notes that his favorite part is “hearing about the success and impact Xcel is having.”

“Guys are pursuing college sports and high level degrees and finding job placement with top companies in Savannah.”

The short term impact is assisting students with goal setting, time management, resume building, health & fitness, financial stewardship and relational intelligence.

The long-term impact is continuing to build a network with students, mentors and local businesses to produce strong male leaders in Savannah.

Over the next few years, the Xcel board has plans to expand into Richmond Hill and possibly outside the Savannah area. “Maybe even Macon,” notes Whitfield.

Brad and his wife Dana (Lyles ’98) currently live in Savannah, Georgia with their two children William (11) and Catherine Anne (8).

2006 Jarrett and Haley Causey Clubb welcomed Callie Ruth on April 10, 2017. She joins her proud big sister, Clary.

Joby Peake and Jean Hawkins Peake welcomed a new baby boy, Holden Peake in June 2017. He joins big brother Henry Peake. He is pictured below with Henry and his cousin, Gus Craig, son of FPD alum Greer Hawkins (‘03) Craig and her husband, Bryan.

2007 Patrick Barry and his wife Amber are excited to welcome a baby boy, Arthur Patrick Barry V (Abel), on June 16. Patrick is working at Eberhardt and Barry and was named one of Middle Georgia Association of Realtors top commercial producers in 2016. Amber is working at Sonny Carter Elementary.

Caroline Wicker Jackson and her husband, Kelly, are Florida-bound. Kelly graduated from Reformed Theological Seminary in May 2017, and they along with their children, Nora (2) and Johnny (6 months), will move to Tallahassee.

Kelly has accepted a call to become the next campus minister for Reformed University Fellowship at Florida State University. They are grateful for the opportunity to reach college students for Christ and equip them to serve.

Rebekah Thompson is engaged to Luke Stafford. The wedding is planned for September 2 at First Presbyterian Church in Macon, Georgia.

2008 Katie Herring received her bachelors degree in nursing and currently works at the Medical Center Navicent Health. She is working on her Masters of Nursing to receive a degree in Acute Care of Adult/ Gerontology Nurse Practitioner.

Alexandra Markert Lamping and husband, Corey, are proud to announce the birth of their first child, Jason Dean Lamping, on April 4, 2017.

Caroline Taylor and Stuart Schmidtke were married April 9, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church in Macon, Georgia.

The Schmidtkes live in Atlanta where Caroline works as physician assistant with GI Specialists of Georgia and Stuart is a project manager for BDR Partners.

Ashley Welesko and Jason Reeves were wed on May 14, 2015 at Mulberry Methodist church. Ashley is a graduate of University of Georgia and Jason is a graduate of Kennesaw State University. Ashley is employed as a financial advisor at Wells Fargo Financial and Jason is employed as a business applications supervisor at Oldcastle. The couple resides in Atlanta, Georgia.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Tyler Lewis ‘11

A Calling to Teach in South Korea FPD alum Tyler Lewis knew he would one day want to travel to South Korea. He knew he wanted to experience Eastern culture and see a new environment.

He had no idea he would end up incorporating “Disney Clue” in a lesson plan for a group of young Korean students on a Saturday afternoon.

“During my sophomore year of college, I began to get into the music and dramas from South Korea, and my interest in the culture continued to grow from there. I knew that I would eventually want to visit the country,” remembers Lewis. “So, when I was introduced to the possibility of going to teach there during my senior year of college, I considered it seriously.”

In 2015 Lewis turned that idea into reality and signed on to teach at a Hagwon, a private academy in South Korea, as an English teacher for students ages six to fifteen. He works from 12:30 p.m.

– 9:30 p.m. covering everything from the basics of the alphabet to facilitating a discussion on the pros and cons of something simple like eating fast food. The Disney Clue board game comes into play during special Saturday classes for younger students which also include unique activities like American-style holidays and crafts.

“I knew I liked being around kids before, but being able to teach children that have been in this academy as long as I have, and observing the growth they have demonstrated over this time, has been overwhelmingly rewarding,” notes Lewis. “I have learned patience and creativity with respect to each individual student. I have learned adaptability. Also, there have been times when we have finished the lessons in class too soon, so I have to think on my toes about what engaging activity or craft we can do with the remaining time.”

When he first started, Lewis remembers it was difficult to balance learning all the necessary information to survive at work and

daily life in a foreign country. Without knowing the language and culture, it took some time for him to adapt. Things as simple as getting groceries, working a washing machine, or ordering a cup of coffee came with a whole new set of challenges.

However, over the course of the next two years, these barriers began to break down and Lewis fell in love with the country and opportunities he has there.

“I think the most important role of a teacher is to encourage students and let them know that they are loved,” comments Lewis. “The best part for me has been my students. I love getting to see them each day and interact with them.”

Lewis plans to come back to the States in 2017 and pursue a career in education. The experience has helped him confirm that his passion, his talent, and his mission is teaching.

“I know I wouldn’t have come to Korea if God didn’t want it to happen. I am so thankful for this opportunity that I was given and able to experience. God has been a part of this experience every step of the way. I have seen God in the people He placed around me and allowed me to meet.”

Lewis leaves this bit of advice for current FPD students: “I just want any student who is worried about their future to know that God has got you. He knows you and your talents, so don’t sweat it. He will shape you into exactly who you need to be. Also, don’t be afraid to broaden your perspective by traveling abroad. I highly encourage traveling and seeing different styles of life. It will make you think and grow as a person.”

Adelyn Bargeron Boleman graduated from Mercer Law in May 2017. She and Brock Boleman were married on January 7, 2017, at Ingleside Baptist Church in Macon, Georgia.

Haleigh Jones and James Watwood ‘12 married at First Presbyterian Church on July 23, 2016. The reception was held at the Hay House. Haleigh says, “We are so thankful to FPD because that is where we met!” James is in the Air Force, and the couple moved to Oklahoma where James will go through pilot training.

Lizzie Lisenby won the Scheller College of Business Outstanding Leader Award at the Georgia Institute of Technology for her superb leadership and high moral character. She is a junior at Georgia Tech entering her senior year this fall. Additionally this summer, Lizzie will be interning at the Coca-Cola Company corporate headquarters working on a global security project. Lizzie writes, “Looking back on my time at FPD, I realize over and over again that it built me into the strong woman that I am today. I could not be more thankful for my time spent there.”

Brooke Ellard received a Doctor of Pharmacy from McWhorter School of Pharmacy at Samford University on May 5, 2017. Brooke has also received a Bachelor of Science in nutrition science from the University of Georgia in 2013 and a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy science from Samford University in 2015.

She will be working at the Birmingham VA Medical Center beginning in July as a pharmacy resident.

Weathers Veazey recently passed the Alabama State Bar Exam. She is now a licensed attorney in Alabama.

Jonathan Easter and Katelyn Sutton were married on June 10, 2017, in a ceremony at First United Methodist Church in Evanston, Illinois. They currently reside with their corgi, Daisy, in Chicago, where they both attend graduate school at Northwestern University, Katelyn for Marriage & Family Therapy and Jonathan for Law.

Madison Busbee received an award for Volunteer of the Year for the entire student body at Valdosta State University.

Calli Watson and Steven Yi were married at Mulberry Street United Methodist Church in Macon, Georgia on May 28, 2016. Calli is a nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. Steven is pursuing a medical degree in radiology. The couple resides in Alpharetta, Georgia.

2013 Lauren Ellard graduated on May 5, 2017, from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science in nutrition science.

She will attend the University of Georgia’s Doctor of Pharmacy program this coming August.

Ru Yi Marone was named “Outstanding Sophomore” by the College of Computing at Georgia Tech. He is interning with QuantLab in Houston, Texas this summer, applying artificial intelligence algorithms to financial quantitative analysis.

The weather presented a perfect day for golf at the 18th Annual FPD Golf Tournament on April 17. This year we had 41 teams playing at the beautiful Idle Hour Country Club, the largest number of teams to date. The winners were Tommy James, Chris Wilson, Hal Greer, and Mike Kaplan. FPD is looking forward to another great season of Viking football and with that comes the opportunity for our families to purchase reserved seats at the George S. Johnson Memorial Stadium. Introduced prior to the 2013 season, reserved seats are limited and are tiered in price based on their position within the stands. Each purchase comes with premium parking and easy game access.

“Our reserved seats are the best seats in the house,” said FPD Athletic Director Greg Moore. “For our fans who want prime viewing of the games, these seats are the way to go. Plus, the nearby parking makes entry and exit very easy.”

Seat purchases are tax deductible, minus a game-entry fee. Proceeds benefit the stadium renovation and continued football program improvements.
