FROM THE HEADMASTER Dear FPD Family and Friends, In December, at our Board of Visitors Luncheon, five of our seniors shared perspectives on their time at FPD and their plans for college as they responded to questions from Mr. Kitchell, our high school principal. Listening to their responses and often humorous memories, I was reminded of the Profile of an FPD Graduate, shared below. Each of the five students had different interests and connected with the academic, extra-curricular programs, and service opportunities uniquely. They each spoke of the investment in their studies and involvements beyond the classroom that led to personal growth. They spoke of connecting with adult mentors who supported them in that growth and encouraged them spiritually. Each identified specific faculty and coaches who had impacted their lives and experiences. Interestingly, each student named different faculty and staff who were of significant influence and encouragement. It was a privilege to have our seniors share these experiences with our special guests, some of whom have been involved at FPD since the ‘70s and ‘80s. (The Board of Visitors is a council of advocates that commit to pray, support, and advocate for FPD beyond the date of their youngest child’s graduation.) This edition of the FPD Magazine provides a glimpse of educating and equipping our future graduates in early elementary, middle, and high school, and highlights some of our alumni who are being used by God to change the world for His glory. Thank you for partnering with us. Because He is faithful, Gregg Thompson

HEARTS

How FPD’s elementary curriculum helps students make connections - Wade Putnal, FPD Elementary Principal When many of us as parents were in elementary school, the general theme was memorization, set reading groups, and rote learning. Desks were set in rows with the teacher at the front, chalk in her hand as she wrote things on the blackboard. My how things have changed! Educators now recognize that students learn best when they are active and engaged. When they can get messy, try new things, and see in action what they are reading on the page.

make owls in art class (Also improves fine-motor skills!)

read about forest animals in the library

For that reason, we no longer have stacks of textbooks in our elementary classrooms. Desks are arranged in groups instead of rows for active group work. Students study in a variety of settings both inside and outside. We also take this concept of engaged learning a step further.

example: learning about animals in 3K

At FPD, we weave all of our subjects together, across multiple platforms, with a continuous thread of discovering more about God’s wonderful creation. sing songs about animals in music class and use stuffed animals to practice rhythm

Teachers in each grade meet with each other and our co-curricular instructors, including those in art, music, Spanish, computer lab, science lab, and our media center, to plan ways to connect the thematic units of study across multiple platforms.

As a result, students see connections. They see relevance between subjects as well as their everyday lives. For example, when our fourth grade class studies the stages of water, the students engage in a hands-on experiment in the classroom, followed by an exploration of all the water phases in the science lab. They have fun with a writing project titled “My Life as a Drop” and read Paddle to the Sea in language arts. They study the story of Jonah during their Bible time and research the different bodies of water in geography. By weaving the material together in multiple formats, students not only retain the material at a deeper level, they also see the information “come to life.” They recognize that they are not just reading words on a page or memorizing facts, but are making connections about things they encounter on a daily basis.

And so begins a lifelong love for learning! Students are excited about going to school. Learning is fun! Math is not memorizing facts to pass a test; through games and play, students see how math is used on a daily basis. Reading is no longer a rote practice, but an opportunity to discover more about someone discussed in social studies or a concept studied in science. Science is not about a textbook, but about hands-on exploration of God’s wondrous creation. The connections are truly limitless! Students recognize that the world is full of opportunities to learn and discover. They have a God-given inclination to ask questions and seek answers. Through weaving together our curriculum, we can tap into that innate desire and give them the opportunity to make connections about God’s amazing design each and every day.

Using this weaving method, we are also able to connect with students’ different learning styles. No two learners comprehend things exactly the same way. Some children learn a concept best by writing a story. Others prefer to review the facts. Some like to read a book while others grasp lessons best with a demonstration or experiment. Furthermore, some students learn best in the morning hours, others in the afternoon. By presenting the information in multiple formats at different times during they day, we reach each student in a way that best suits his or her learning style.

things every

18-Year-Old should know

- Brad Thompson, FPD Director of College Counseling One of the things this old English major likes to do over the summer is to catch up on some reading. This past summer, I looked into one of the “hot books as recommended by others in college guidance. This book is called How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success by Julie LythcottHaims, Dean of Freshman and Undergraduate Advising at Stanford University. As you can see, the title is pretty catchy to an educator (specifically someone who works mostly with high school students), and it is also pretty catchy to parents as well. While reading the book, I was particularly struck by a checklist she came up with in chapter six. The list contained practical things that she says eighteen-year-olds need to know before they head off to college. As I read through the list, I was intrigued by what could impact our seniors but also what could impact all ages as they head toward their senior year. I sought how I might encourage others (including my own 14-year-old, 10-year-old, and 5-year-old) as they moved towards their young adult years. And as we all know, time does indeed fly!

A Different Kind of Checklist An 18-year-old must be able to talk to strangers.

An 18-year-old must be able to find his way around.

Bottom line is that they need to talk to adults, period! This needs to start young. Have your student go to ask their teacher something, have them talk to their coaches, have them talk to their college counselors, and have them talk to college representatives of colleges they are interested in attending. Have them do something as simple as ordering their own food at a restaurant. The more they practice this, the more ready they will be to talk to a roommate, an advisor, a college professor, a landlord, or even to a future employer down the road.

Those who know me might laugh that I am advocating that students learn how to navigate places due to my own sense of direction, or lack thereof. However, it is critical that students begin to learn their way around their own town or as they go to other towns. Have them drive and have them navigate ways to new places. I am shocked about how little some of our students know about even navigating Macon. When they are young, ask them which way to turn as you go to a destination. One of the best things my mom did when I turned 15 was to have me drive through Atlanta to my grandparents. At the time, I was

a little concerned, but looking back, it was so helpful. I learned the city and the confidence to drive in and around the city that a lot of my friends did not get to do until later. All of this will pay off as they go to a new college town, navigate a city on a mission trip, or go to a new city for an internship or job interview.

An 18-year-old must be able to manage his assignments, workload, and deadlines. This is pretty much a no-brainer. However, this must begin early. The more we take care of these things for them; the more they don’t learn to become responsible. This moves all the way throughout high school. If we do things for them, how will they become responsible college students when we, as parents and educators, are not there for them? How will they become responsible graduate students or employees if they don’t begin to practice these habits? How will they be responsible spouses and parents as well? Don’t do everything for them! Often, we don’t want them to miss an assignment or deadline because they may face a consequence. Wouldn’t the consequence teach them so much more about life?

An 18-year-old must be able to contribute to the running of a household. Wow! Now, please use wisdom depending on the age of the student. There are and have been child labor laws in our country for a long time. The responsibilities must increase as they get older. My oldest can get up on her own, get her breakfast and get ready on her own. My youngest can barely get dressed or buckle himself up on his own (some of that is age but mostly it is because he has two older sisters). One is 14 and one is 5, and our expectations are different. One could be leaving in 4 years and one has a long time to go. How will they know how to take care of themselves or a household if we don’t ask them to help when they are younger? They have to do their share and that share increases as they get older. Even to the time when parents are no longer around. We are not going to go off to college with them. If we don’t increase this independence, we are creating future issues with roommates, spouses, and even their own children. For the sake of all future roommates, start early!

An 18-year-old must be able to handle interpersonal problems. That means that we, as parents, don’t “handle” or “fix” everything. A common question my wife and I ask our kids after someone begins whining is, “Is anyone bleeding?” The point we are making is that they need to handle something that is small in nature. If it is big enough to need a parent, then let’s talk. Our view is down the road. We want to help them prepare for issues with a college roommate, a friend, a spouse, or a co-worker. They need to learn to handle those issues and not wait on us to do so. An 18-year-old must be able to cope with ups and downs of courses and workloads, college-level work, competition, tough teachers, bosses and others. Again, it is okay for them to struggle. Raise your hand if your life has not had any downs. Exactly. Life is full of the ups and, of course, the downs. If it weren’t for some of the downs, we would not grow in our faith to trust in God. The times in my life where I have grown the most are those where I was in a “down.” I have to allow my children to have some downs so that they can grow in their faith. They will be okay! This list is, of course, just part of the complete picture. However, it gives perspective to the importance of combining lessons learned at home with lessons learned in the classroom, all of them on the foundation of a biblical world view. I encourage each of us as parents to take a step back and think about the lessons we learned as students that we now really appreciate or even lessons we wish we had learned. For as it says in Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

FPD’S INAUGURAL

CLUB FAIR Did you know that FPD has 20 clubs on campus from which students can choose in addition to numerous athletic and fine art extracurricular activities? In order to showcase these numerous opportunities, FPD hosted its inaugural Club Fair this fall. Club advisers set up a booth or classroom display for students to browse and sign up to receive information about any groups that were of interest to them. “Often students don’t realize how many clubs they have to choose from at FPD,” stated High School Principal, Matt Kitchell. “The goal of the Club Fair was to give students the opportunity to browse the different options and for the clubs to showcase the great things they do.”

FPD HIGH SCHOOL GETS

UNPLUGGED

It’s not everyday that you see high school students put down their tablets, turn off their cell phones, and pull out colored pencils, paint brushes, ping pong paddles, or acoustic guitars. That’s what FPD Unplugged is all about! During an activity period in October and December, FPD students were asked to unplug and engage in activities and conversation with their peers and teachers. “At FPD we embrace the use of technology and believe its use in our context is extremely helpful in preparing students with necessary skills for future success,” remarked High School Principal, Matt Kitchell. “We also understand that their minds are actively engaged with technology for large portions of the day. Sometimes students just need to ‘unplug’ and engage in purposeful, active conversations and activities. FPD Unplugged is a break from the norm.” Faculty members designed activities around a hobby or special interest that they are passionate about. Students signed-up and joined in during activity period. These activities included nature walks, ping pong tournaments, story time, bracelet making, KanJam, and acoustic guitar playing among others.

FPD students take in the

Solar Eclipse On August 21, FPD’s entire student body, and even several parents and grandparents, came together to witness the historical solar eclipse. This wonderful teaching moment was something the students prepared for weeks in advance, reading books about the event, studying it in science, and participating in hands-on experiments in their labs. A special thanks to FPD parent Dr. Jeffery Hinson who donated NASA approved safety eclipse glasses for students and teachers so they could see God’s handiwork in the heavens.

FALL SPORTS RECAPS

Seniors who participated in 2017 Fall Sports & Auxiliaries

- Jason Godbee, FPD Sports Information Director

CROSS COUNTRY At the beginning of the season, both FPD Cross Country teams set their sights on Carrollton, where the GHSA annually holds the State Cross Country Championships. The FPD Boys Cross Country Team put together a memorable season on the trail this fall. They would not finish outside the top 10 prior to the state championship and in eight of their ten races this season they would finish in the top four. The FPD Girls Cross Country Team had not competed at the state meet since 2014. With their hard work and determination, they would get back to State ending a two-year absence. During the season, the Lady Vikings would finish in the top eight in every race but two.

FOOTBALL For the second consecutive year, the Vikings would advance to the second round of the GHSA Class A Private Playoffs. They finished the 2017 season with eight wins, which was their most since the 2011 season.

SOFTBALL

The Lady Vikings battled their way into the Final Four at their fifth straight appearance in the state playoffs. After losing the opening game of the Elite Eight in Columbus, the Lady Vikings would return the following day and compete in 21 innings in one day. They would shut out region foes behind exceptional pitching from junior Karsen Ochs, advancing to the Final Four. The Lady Vikings finished the season ranked fourth in Class-A. All season the Lady Vikings worked on improving each game to put themselves in a position to return to Columbus. Coach Denny Bryant contributed his team’s success this season to their attitude. “The girls loved each other, and they played for each other. They had the goal of returning to Columbus, and they knew it was going to take everyone being on the same page to accomplish that,” said Bryant. The Macon Telegraph’s 2017 Softball Region 7-A All-Region selection for 1st Team were juniors Karsen Ochs and Moe Register. Second Team honors went to seniors Sydnee Sconyers, Sadie Frame, and Caylee Ann Sutton as well as sophomore Abbey Surles and freshman Olivia Parker.

VOLLEYBALL

On offense, the Vikings were led by senior quarterback Dalton Cox. Cox completed 62% of his passes, while throwing for over 2,900 yards along with 30 touchdowns for a Viking football record. His main target was senior Titus Moore. Moore caught 76 of his passes, tying him for the all-time, single-season record of receptions, and received for 1,476 yards and 15 touchdowns, setting a new touchdown reception record.

Lady Viking Volleyball has a lot to be proud of from their 2017 season. The seniors ended their volleyball careers with a 20-win season.

Defensively, the Vikings were led by senior linebacker Ryan Jones, who led the team in tackles-assists with 110. The Viking secondary that consisted of seniors Maurice Gordon, Robert Johnson, Titus Moore, and Josh Raines would combine for eight interceptions and two defensive touchdowns of their own.

Old records were broken and new ones established with the seniors leading the way. Caitlin Farr broke her own record of 75 aces set in 2015 with 76 aces this season. Lundy Lader topped two records this season. She set a new record of 164 kills and 51 solo blocks, and Sophie Seneker set a new career digs record with 392 digs over her four-year volleyball career.

Senior Dalton Cox was named Offensive Player of the Year by the Macon Telegraph as part of their 2017 Region 7-A All-Region Team. Seniors John Lester, Blaine Kizer, Titus Moore, and Maurice Gordon as well as junior Wesley Wilson were named to their 1st Team Offense. First Team Defense included seniors Robert Johnson and Ryan Jones.

“These seniors set the bar higher in leadership and in practice. It was special to watch them train together as a unit,” said head coach, Sarah Futo.

The Vikings will be returning six players from this year’s varsity roster along with the additions from the JV team.

TWICE IS NICE!

The FPD Spirit of the Viking Marching Band takes home top honors at both fall competitions The FPD Marching Band and Vanguard had a phenomenal season! The Spirit of the Vikings participated in the Stateline Showdown and took home superior ratings in Color Guard, Drum Major, Majorettes, Percussion, and Overall Band. Percussion and Majorettes also received best in class awards. Later in the season, they attended the Sound of Silver Festival and Competition. FPD received all superior ratings in all categories of adjudication as well as 1st Place in Class A. The band received a superior rating in festival performance and placed fourth overall in the entire competition. Their performance this year was titled “A Believer’s Journey,” featuring hymns How Great Thou Art, Amazing Grace, Fly Fly Away and It Is Well, interwoven with Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copland.

Truth Rocks in Elementary Art! FPD’s elementary art students put their own spin on the national rock painting trend with a campuswide instillation project called Truth Rocks. At the beginning of the school year, students in grades 1 - 5 painted hundreds of rocks with messages about God’s love and promises. The rocks were then placed around campus. Students were asked not to move them, but instead enjoy their beautiful messages as reminders of joy and hope for others to see as they walked our campus.

with the Orff Ensemble Launched in the spring on 2017, the Elementary Orff Ensemble is a group of third, fourth, and fifth grade students who meet on Wednesday mornings to enhance their musical talents and prepare for three showcase events. This year’s group consists of twenty-one students. They play musical instruments based on the Orff-Schulwerk approach to music education. Orff, a famous German composer, created instruments that are smaller versions of traditional percussion instruments, such as xylophones, marimbas, and bells. They are made to be portable, have removable bars, and easily played by young children. “In the Orff Ensemble, we go above and beyond what we cover in their weekly music classes,” says Mindy Krejci, FPD’s Elementary Music Teacher. “It’s a form of musical enrichment for students who are looking for that. Orff Ensemble members also learn ensemble skills like teamwork, accomplishing goals, creative thinking, and personal responsibility for their own instrument parts.” The Orff Ensemble performs at the elementary Christmas program, Grandparents’ Day, and Elementary Honors Day.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

A Dream of Paris FPD Alum Pearce Groover (‘12) follows his lifelong goal of transcribing literature in Paris.

It’s rare that you know while in high school what you want to do “when you grow up.” It’s even more of an anomaly to know it in middle school. However, for FPD alum Pearce Groover, he knew his calling beginning in elementary. Now, a graduate of the University of Georgia, Pearce is off to fulfill that calling in Paris, studying for his PhD in Medieval French Literature at the École Nationale des Chartes and the École Pratique des Hautes Études.

and 2017, Groover participated in art historical curation internships at the Château de Chantilly (Musée Condé) and at the Château de Versailles.

“I have always been interested in French culture,” states Groover. “I remember reading from a very early age about French art and history. My family always encouraged me to travel in order to experience other cultures —especially my mother and my paternal grandmother. They were the ones who introduced me to Paris for the first time.”

His sights set on the City of Lights, Groover wasted no time preparing for the next step in his journey. He moved to Paris in September 2017, where he will spend the next four years studying for his PhD. The bulk of his work includes transcribing an unpublished manuscript written by Octovien de SaintGelais in the 1480s, followed by a critical analysis of the work, both literary and art historical. Groover hopes to shed greater light on that era of history as understood through its art and literature.

Groover began to show an undeniable interest once in high school. This caught the attention of longtime FPD French teacher, Mrs. Irene Marxsen, who suggested to Groover the possibility of a summer study at the Sorbonne in Paris. “She was a fantastic teacher,” remembers Groover. “She showed me what was possible.” Mrs. Marxsen helped him research and apply for the program, perfectly suited for a student as passionate as Groover. Groover excelled, focusing on French art and history. The rest, as they say, is history. Upon graduation from FPD, Groover attended the University of Georgia, attracted to their Honors Program and the opportunity to pursue his undergraduate and graduate degrees at the same time. During the summers of 2016

Groover graduated from UGA in May 2017 with bachelor degrees in French language and art history, magna cum laude, and a masters degree in French literature, summa cum laude.

“The more you study another culture, the more you understand your own,” says Groover. “If you look at a historical phenomenon that at that time fulfilled a certain cultural purpose, you understand your own period differently. By studying their culture, I understand better the roots of our own.” Groover is thankful for the support of teachers at FPD, especially Mrs. Marxsen, and that of his mother, Kay, father, Duke, brothers, Noah, Wyatt, and Jacob, and his “Gammy,” Mrs. Betty Ragland. No matter where the next steps lead him, Pearce knows he belongs in Paris. Most heritage curators in France study at the school he is attending. It is very possible that FPD students abroad might one day visit an art museum curated by one of FPD’s own alumni.

Robert Thompson proposed to Ciera Williams on November 3, 2017. Both graduated from Georgia Southern in 2016 and are currently working in the St. Pete area, Robert as a construction manager and Ciera in interior design.

Kalo Oglesby was selected by 13WMAZ in Macon for “My Teacher is Tops.” He was nominated by his students at Crawford County Elementary.

2013 2012 Victoria Coppage married Jess Weece in July 2017. The couple now resides in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Lindsey O’Quinn graduated in May 2017 from Samford University with a bachelor of fine arts in interior design. She married Jay Davis on August 26, 2017. The couple is living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where Lindsey works at a contract furniture dealership.

2015 Tesch Jerles is studying abroad in Castiglione Fiorintino, Italy with the University of Texas, Austin.

2017 Juliana Hawkinson submitted her idea to Research that Reaches Out on the Mercer University campus. Based on her idea, Dr. Kathryn Kloepper and Hannah Vann selected Julianna as part of a twenty-student presentation panel. Juliana presented her idea, called “Game Changers,” that would provide entertaining and engaging new board games to encourage families to spend meaningful time together while their child is in the local hospital.

An amazing legacy....

Cheryl Hayes Ogle (‘94)

FPD alum Cheryl Hayes Ogle touched countless lives as a teacher at Gray Elementary School in Gray, Georgia. Friends noted that she “lived to teach and take care of children.” That devotion and care was what led her to be named Gray Elementary’s 2015-16 Teacher of the Year. Upon her death on November 3, 2017, the close-knit community rallied together to make sure her legacy of love and compassion continued. In addition to teaching, Ogle was the coordinator for the Guardian Angels at Gray Elementary. Her friends remember her concern that the program might not be able to raise enough money to meet the needs in the community. After her death, gifts to the Guardian Angels program arrived in droves. Likewise, a book drive began at

Gray Elementary with numerous parents purchasing books that were then donated in Cheryl’s honor to the school’s library. The legacy Cheryl leaves is one of hope and joy. Cheryl’s son Parker said it best, “She loved children’s books and children’s literature, so I know she’s up there smiling.” For more information about how you can participate in any of these ways of honoring Cheryl, visit www.facebook.com/lovelikecherylogle.

Homecoming Awards

2017

Distinguished Alumni Award - Kris Hattaway Vaughn (‘04) The Distinguished Alumni Award goes to an alumnus/alumna who has made an outstanding contribution through his/her vocation or who otherwise deserves to be recognized for outstanding achievement in some field or endeavor – an individual who has “changed the world for God’s glory.” Since August of 2015, Kris Vaughn has served as the Executive Director of GeorgiaForward, a statewide nonprofit working to strengthen communities, unite our state, and create a talent pipeline within Georgia. Prior to joining GeorgiaForward, she led economic development and community engagement efforts for the Macon Water Authority. For over five years before that, she was the Director of Place for NewTown Macon and a leading member of the development team transforming downtown Macon. Named 40 Under 40 by Georgia Trend Magazine in 2016, Kris is a rising star in the state of Georgia. She and her husband are members of Leadership Georgia Class of 2017. She is a 2010 graduate of Leadership Macon as well as the Georgia Academy of Regional Economic and Leadership Development. Kris holds a Bachelors of Arts in Journalism from the University of Georgia and a Certificate of Leadership from UGA’s Terry College of Business’s Institute for Leadership Advancement. Kris is married to Forsyth attorney Ben Vaughn and they live in Monroe County with their daughter Hattie and two dogs. They are active members of Mulberry Street United Methodist Church in Macon.

Service Award - Barbara Henley The FPD Service Award goes to an individual who has shown continued service and support to First Presbyterian Day School. In 1981, Mrs. Barbara Henley became a part of the FPD family when she arrived to teach physical science. To the benefit of hundreds of students, she made her home at FPD for 33 years. Her service to FPD extended far beyond her hours in the classroom and her years as a faculty member. Mrs. Henley was a friendly face at just about every event on campus. When she was not volunteering to chaperone dances or keep the books for the basketball teams, she was there to cheer on her students. At Friday night football games, it was Mrs. Henley who welcomed guests at the Pass Gate at every home game, a role she continues even after retirement. Mrs. Henley’s love for serving others extends far beyond the FPD campus. While teaching at FPD, she cooked breakfast at Macon Outreach every Tuesday morning beginning at 5:30 a.m. Upon retirement from FPD in 2014, she decided to extend her work with the homeless, and began serving lunch at Macon Outreach daily. Olivia Taylor, 2014 FPD Valedictorian, had this to say about Mrs. Henley, “Thankfully, I had Mrs. Henley to remind me that life isn’t just about work. She served as a reminder to enjoy the little things. Mrs. Henley was able to maintain the balance between work and fun. She made learning fun, and in the process touched many lives including mine.”

ANNUAL REPORT One of the really wonderful things about serving and working at a Christian school is that sometimes you get to see God’s providence working out in a wonderful way. Last year, I reported to you about the school’s purchase of additional acreage across Calvin Drive. Subsequent to that purchase, the seller, having learned more about FPD’s master plan and the sports complex being planned for the land, decided to donate an additional 112 acres, placing 102 acres in a conservation easement. This gift extends FPD’s campus footprint further down Foster Road and gives us access to Tucker Road as well. The property is heavily forested and has a large creek, a pond, and an old house. We are very excited to see what the Lord has in store for our campus through the addition of this land. Some initial elements of the sports complex are now being developed. An 18-acre tract has been cleared close to Calvin Drive. The construction of eight new tennis courts as well as a large field for the start and finish area of cross country meets is nearing completion. The expansion of the Peake Cross Country Trail to a full two-loop, 5K course will begin soon and will allow us to host meets on campus. Some of you have seen our “All In” theme on Facebook, our website, in our promotional materials, etc. For me, being “All In” at FPD, even as an alum and a parent of alumni, is that I am “All In” for God’s vision and plan for FPD, and I am “All In” to support FPD with my time, gifts, and prayers. This Annual Report shows that many of you are also “All In” for supporting FPD. For that we are very grateful. Through your gifts and prayers, FPD has become a model for other Christian schools to follow, a model of excellence in Christian education, and of faithfulness to the Lord. Sincerely, Jay Strickland, 2015-2017 Board Chairman

THANK YOU FOR GIVING Dear Friends and Families of FPD, So much has happened over the last year that it’s hard for me to know where to start. First of all, let me just say a huge thank you to each and every person, family, company, group, church, foundation, and organization listed in this Annual Report. Your faith in our faculty, staff, and administration and your willingness to invest your resources in this school are amazing. Your gifts last year met countless needs in the areas of academics, technology, facilities, fine arts, athletics, and financial aid. Second, I want to also thank the FPD family for all of the warm thoughts and prayers for me and my family after the passing of my mother on March 14. My mama led me to Christ as a child, took me to church every time the doors opened, and modeled an exemplary Christian walk for me her entire life. She demonstrated the fruits of the spirit and had a kind word and a sweet smile for everyone. One of the biggest lessons I have learned over this past year is that life is short and so many things just aren’t that important. How much we HAVE is not nearly as important as how much we GIVE! Giving is what it’s really all about – and it all belongs to our Heavenly Father anyway! Sowing seeds into His kingdom means making an eternal difference. Training up our children in a way that teaches them to follow after Christ is paramount, especially in today’s world. Nothing is more important than that, and that is the work that is happening at FPD every single day. We could not do it without you. In Greatest Appreciation, Jennifer Barfield FPD Director of Advancement

STATEMENT OF GIVING 2016 - 2017 Annual Fund The FPD Annual Fund consists of two kinds of gifts - restricted and unrestricted. Restricted gifts may be designated for various academics, athletics, fine arts, facilities, or miscellaneous categories. Unrestricted gifts go toward the greatest need. The funds work like a checking account in that any gifts not spent in a given year roll over to the next year. Many times, restricted funds are encumbered for ongoing projects. The total number of donors to the 2016-2017 FPD Annual Fund was 603.

VPA leadership team

Several members of our Board of Visitors worked with some of our high school art students to participate in our school-wide mural. After wrapping up their spring Board of Visitors meeting, they each painted a 3”x3” square tile. These tiles were combined with others painted by students and faculty for a complete work of art. See page 13 for more information.

Under a Georgia state law established in 2008, taxpayers are able to re-direct a portion of their state income tax payment to provide need-based tuition assistance. FPD has partnered with the GOAL Scholarship Program to help facilitate the provisions of the law. This program allows FPD to provide needbased financial assistance to eligible students. Letter from Charlie Parrish

Chief Financial Officer

As you read through the FPD Magazine, let me encourage you to read specifically about FPD alumni, and the way that they are engaging their communities and changing the world around them. I love reading those stories, as every single one is about a student who was once walking the halls of FPD, becoming equipped for what they are doing today.

Likewise, nearly 30% of our budget is dedicated to resources and programs that make our educational experience robust and engaging so our students have the strong college-preparatory tools they need to be prepared for some of our nation’s top colleges and universities.

My role as CFO puts me in front of parents who have firmly made the choice to send their children to a school where they can establish a solid Christ-centered college preparatory foundation, surrounded by mentors who love and want the very best for them. What a blessing it is to see that come full circle with alumni who are now God-honoring leaders and parents themselves.

If you are a current FPD parent, thank you for the sacrifices you are making for your children. You have made a deliberate choice to make your child’s education a top priority. Your tuition dollars ensure a strong foundation for your child and others. If you are a contributor to FPD, thank you for your investment in a special mission. Your gift will impact students for years to come, so that today’s kindergartners may benefit from the same exceptional educational experience as the alumni who are featured in this magazine.

FPD’s Board of Trustees and Administration knows that the future health of our school is based on the health of our students and alumni. Every decision made is viewed in the light of our longstanding mission to “educate and equip students to change the world for God’s glory.” For this reason we invest heavily in our teachers, the men and women who interact with our students on a daily basis. We commit 69% of our budget to retaining, attracting, and developing the most qualified Christian educators.

FPD remains committed to being faithful stewards of our tuition revenue as well as gifts. God continues to bless our school with wonderful families, faculty, coaches, donors, and students who desire a strong, Christ-centered, college-preparatory education in middle Georgia.

While our teachers are living out the FPD mission in the classrooms, you are all part of the mission as well. It remains evident that God has great plans for FPD and the many men and women who call it their school home or their alma mater.

Dr. Richards was the pastor of First Presbyterian Church from 1956-1972. He and several visionaries had a dream to open a Christ-centered college preparatory school. The John E. Richards Society was established to glorify God and to honor Richards’ role in the founding of FPD. The John E. Richards Society provides financial resources to

The

FPD through planned giving. Making a planned gift is a simple way to ensure that the vision of FPD will continue not only today but for generations to come. There are six ways to join:

Society

•

Prepare a will with a bequest, remainder trust, gift annuity, lead trust and/or retained life estate plan.

•

Leave a gift to FPD in your will.

•

Consider using assets such as stocks, bonds, investments other than cash for your charitable gift. Such gifts may provide additional tax advantages.

•

Name FPD as the beneficiary of your individual retirement account or pension plan.

•

Name FPD as the beneficiary of a new or existing life insurance policy.

•

Remember deceased loved ones with endowed memorial gifts to FPD.

Donors who make gifts totaling $1,000 or more annually, including matching gifts, are automatically qualified to become members of the Day School Society, FPD’s annual giving club, and are recognized at a special reception and dinner each year. Donors who wish to remain anonymous may choose to opt out of membership. Donors who make lifetime gifts totaling $100,000 or more are considered Life Members of the Day School Society.
