Talent knows no disability Dylan Hoover Reporter Here at Buckeye Boys State, everyone is above average, talented and intelligent. We all persevere and work hard to reach our goals. I had the pleasure to sit down with one particular delegate who defies limitations and does what he loves no matter the situation.

Although he only has one arm, Nathaniel Boerner from Cincinnati plays both piano and cello, and he does it well. He has been playing since he was seven years old, first taking lessons and then teaching himself at home with a keyboard. Because he does not have a right arm, when he plays cello he plays notes with his left hand and bows the instrument with his right foot.

Boemer tells me that he has no real preference between either instrument. Like many musicians that play multiple instruments, he tells me that the instrument he plays is often times based on how he has been feeling. When he plays piano, however, Boemer really enjoys jazz and some of his favorite pianists are Dave Brubeck and Herbie Hancock. He often jokes that he is not quite at that level just yet. Boemer furthered that, “I wouldn’t say I’m that great right now...I like to think there is always room to improve.”

Even though he is indisputably impressive, Nathaniel does not really think of himself that way.

Even when given a direct opportunity to brag about himself, he remained humble. When asked what makes him exceptional, he simply

stated that he approaches everything with a servant attitude. He does not view that having one arm makes him any different than others.

Although Nathaniel thoroughly enjoys playing music, he is also very interested in engineering; as a matter of fact, here at Boys State he serves the city as his city engineer.

So the next time the band plays, pay special attention to that pianist; he might be more talented than you assume at first glance.

Highway Patrol gets sued Davyn Williams Reporter On June 15th 2017 Vincent Dragos, the Chief of police in Downing city, was sent to the courtroom at 8:00am. Dragos was being tried for getting three tickets for jaywalking, evasion of an officer of the law and speeding during the previous day.

However, the tickets he was issued were given to Vincent at 4:15pm about an hour after the work day had passed. In the Highway Patrols handbook it says the officers cannot issue a ticket after office hours have ended.

Vincent had this to say about the tickets he had obtained after office hours were over, “I didn’t feel that bad about it at first, but once I looked back on it I real-

ized that this wasn’t right.”

Vincent was not the only delegate that was given a ticket unjustly, Devin Blair from Sklenicka city was also issued a ticket that was after hours, “I think they’re taking their privileges a bit too far.”

Of course giving tickets outside of the office hours is not the only thing the Highway Patrol is doing, they are also giving the wrong times to go into the courtroom or not listing a time for the trial at all.

Dragos’ court case was listed for 8:00am, but when he got to the courtroom, there was no one inside. This was due to the officers who had given him the tickets scheduling his case when all judges and courtroom officials were at the bar association meeting earlier that morning.

As a result of the Highway Patrol’s incompetence, Vincent and many other BBS delegates are looking to sue the Highway Patrol.

The group is planning to sue the Highway Patrol for as much as $100,000 BBS currency, and plan to divide the money among the group evenly. Many law firms are supportive of the decision to sue the Highway Patrol and are willing to help the group in the case.

Although some State Highway Patrolmen are abusing their power, this doesn’t mean all Highway Patrol abuse their rights.

Welsh County: A house divided Dawson Wohler Reporter Creating a budget and managing finances are integral parts of the Buckeye Boys’ State experience. The economic interplay between individuals, counties and cities promotes cooperation. In the case of the mayors of Stockner city and Sklenicka city, it sparked conspiracy.

According to the mayor of Stellar city, Allan “AJ” Rady, a meeting between the mayors of all the cities in Welsh county, (Stockner, Stellar, Sklenicka and Peltier), was convened in order to work out a way to meet their budget. The mayors of Stellar and Peltier proposed that the cities in the county work together to file for a grant.

The mayors of Stockner and Sklenicka had other ideas.

They proposed that the counties should instead work together to kidnap a mayor from another city and hold them for ransom. Rady was firmly against this idea and when he voiced his opinion on the matter during the meeting, he claims that “Sklenicka left and Stockner continued to fight for the right to kidnap and hold for ransom a mayor at Buckeye Boys’ State.”

Rady’s claims are corroborated by an audio recording taken during this meeting. An especially incriminating quote from the mayor of Stockner from this recording is as follows: “A year to shape a lifetime, so let’s have fun.”

Moving forward, Rady intends to file a suit against the mayors of Sklenicka and Stockner

for conspiracy to commit a crime.

Rady is very confident in his lawyers, stating that he believes these mayors will be held accountable “in the highest court of law.” Despite these distractions, Rady continues to lead the charge in securing a grant for Welsh county.

Just because a job is not heavily glorified does not mean that it lacks importance. The position of county commissioners are vital to the flow of government even though they are hardly talked about. This is the type of job where if the people are not hearing about them then it is a job well done.

County commissioner is an important role because many other offices are dependent on the decisions of the county commissioners, just as the county commissioners are dependent on many other jobs’ work to be done. Munson county commissioner Ethan Hayes said, “we have to wait on J19 forms to be filled out and given to us before we can fill out our budget.”

The job of the commissioner can be held up if the responsibilities of other offices are not completed. In this way the government here at Boys’ State is consistent with the U.S. government

in terms of having a long and thorough process.

The actual job of the county commissioners is also one that is misunderstood by many.

Munson county commissioner Ian Swain does a good job summing up their duties by saying, “We get requests from all of the departments and then we decide how much money we will issue them based on our tax revenue as well as their job performance.” With this kind of power over the money it would be a smart idea to stay on their good side.

With three commissioners and a clerk all working together, it is expected that they will have to collaborate on ideas. Interestingly enough, that is not always the case.

Again commissioner Ian Swain was able to provide a good overview on how their job works by stating, “Once decisions have to be made on allocating money we will have to collaborate with our ideas but until then we basically just do things by the book.”

They are able to blend in as just another spoke in the wheel when doing their job, but without them their impact would surely be felt.
