Grateful for her BB&N Experience When I think about BB&N, what stays with me most is the feeling of being truly known. As a student, my teachers saw me—not just academically, but as a whole person—and supported me in ways that built my confidence and encouraged my curiosity. That sense of being recognized and valued shaped how I saw myself and how I learned to engage with the world. Long after graduation, those relationships and memories have stayed with me, influencing how I approach my work, my values, and my understanding of what strong communities look like.

That experience also helped shape my professional path. Today, I work as a Development and Planned Giving Consultant in a field that is deeply relationship-driven and often misunderstood. Planned giving isn’t about complexity, wealth, or age—it’s deeply personal and is about intention. It’s about aligning your values with the organizations that have mattered most to you over time. At its best, planned giving grows naturally out of trust, consistency, and care. My work is centered on helping people see that legacy giving is accessible, thoughtful, and rooted in personal connection, not transaction.

My decision to include BB&N in my estate plans grew quietly and organically from gratitude. It wasn’t about recognition or making a statement—it was about staying connected to a place that played such a formative role in my life. BB&N helped shape who I am, and this is simply a way of honoring that relationship and ensuring that future students can experience the same sense of being known and supported.

Schools like BB&N exist because people remain connected to them over time, and for me, legacy giving is a meaningful way to remain part of a community that will always matter.

A planned gift to BB&N is less about looking ahead than it is about looking back with appreciation—and choosing to stay connected to a place that helped shape my story, long after my time on campus ended.

Letter from Head of School Jennifer Price

Spring 2026 has been full of memorable moments for BB&N. From the Trivia Team cementing its High School Quiz Show legacy, to Lower School students displaying their amazing work at the 3rd Annual Celebration of Learning, to hundreds of BB&N fans cheering the Varsity Baseball Team at the world’s most beloved ballpark, it has been a spring for the ages. As I soaked in the sun during our time as a community at Fenway, I was particularly moved by one seemingly small but meaningful moment as a group of Lower School students congregated alongside the home-side dugout, excitedly handing down baseballs for the Varsity players to autograph. I thought, wow, it doesn’t get much better than this!

An especially historic moment for the school will occur on May 7 as we announce the most ambitious and transformative capital campaign in BB&N history: Bright Bold Next. I invite you to visit pages 24-41 where you can learn more about the many exciting ways that this campaign will help launch BB&N into its next generation of educating students whose bright ideas and bold action will change the world for the better.

In short, it’s a perfect time to quote the cheer I heard so many times at Fenway Park: “Go Knights!”

41st Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Brunch BB&N families gathered in the Upper School Commons this winter for the 41st annual MLK Jr. Day Brunch, a celebration of unity, reflection, and the enduring power of love. Head of School Dr. Price opened the morning with a quote from Dr. King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” and noted that in these times, her hope lies in BB&N and the people who make up the school.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Global Education Officer Leila Bailey-Stewart also shared a quote from Dr. King in her remarks, one that resonated with the theme of the brunch: “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.”

The performances spanned campuses and genres, from jazz bands and singing to an original spoken word poem and violin concertos; the students and one guest performer immersed the crowd in an hour of art and hope.

After a morning spent connecting with each other and watching the talent of the performers, it was evident to the entire room that the BB&N community is something special. As Associate Director of DEIG Patty Dei reflected, “Thank you for being the light for forty-one years.”

Community News BB&N Alumna Represents Japan in Winter Olympics When Rei Halloran ’19 joined BB&N as a seventh grader in 2014 following her family’s move from Japan to Boston, she certainly wasn’t envisioning representing Japan in the 2026 Winter Olympics. The former figure skater turned hockey player was more concerned with making new friends and figuring out the culture she had been immersed into.

Flash forward 12 years, and Halloran found herself with the exact opposite dilemma this winter: re-orienting herself to Japanese culture when she joined the Japanese Olympic team in Germany for training camp.

“I really wanted to represent my Japanese side as I feel very tied to that culture,” noted Halloran. “But adjusting to the culture of the National and Olympic teams was difficult at first because of how long I’ve been living in the U.S.” It’s just one of many challenges Halloran has faced in her already impressive hockey career. Despite stints with multiple teams including The Boch Blazers, The East Coast Wizards, two teams in Europe, and the under-18 Japanese National Team, playing with the Japanese Olympic Team in Italy felt like nothing else.

“Participating in the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics was truly a dream come true. There were countless memorable experiences during my time in Milan, but stepping onto the ice for my first game against Sweden stands out as a moment I’ll never forget.”

In a Zoom conference with BB&N fifth graders set up by her former BB&N hockey coach Ed Bourget ’96 earlier this winter, Halloran shared her journey with the Lower Schoolers. Fielding questions and speaking about her experience, she touched on many topics, including how she is still close to her BB&N friends, how hard you have to work to pursue a sport professionally, and how important it is to find breaks, especially to play other sports beyond the one you’re passionate about.

With the Olympics now in the rear-view mirror, Halloran’s reflections on her experience have only bolstered her drive to continue her hockey dreams.

“What surprised me most was how normal everyone felt in the Olympic Village—despite being international superstars, the athletes I met were incredibly down-to-earth and approachable. Looking ahead, I’m hoping to continue playing professionally and representing my national team as I work toward the next Olympic Games in France.”

1 Bivouac Rolls On This fall BB&N ninth graders took on the wilderness of Camp Marienfield in the New Hampshire foothills as part of the school’s annual Bivouac tradition. The rite of passage for freshmen encourages them to come together as a class, and empowers students to explore resiliency and problem solving as they navigate the 11-day outdoor adventure. Of course, they have some fun along the way!

Ropes courses, swimming, hiking, games, lessons in sustainability, orienteering, and well-earned group meals enjoyed on tables built by themselves are all part of the experience students enjoy. Taking into account the three times the program was cancelled (due to the polio epidemic, a grade restructuring, and COVID), next fall will be the 75th year since the start of the program. Some traditions are built to last.

BB&N Takes Home the Trophy at GBH-TV’s “High School Quiz Show” For the fourth time in as many years, BB&N reached the finals of GBH-TV’s High School Quiz Show (HSQS), airing this spring, and for the second time since 2023, they emerged the state champions, firmly establishing themselves as masters of an astonishing array of facts and as beasts on the buzzer.

spreadsheets, Rollinson points out that in the two games BB&N was behind going into the last round—the rapid-fire Lightning Round in which each answer earns or costs teams 20 points—the Knights outscored opponents 340–100. In all of this tournament’s Lightning Rounds, BB&N led 720–200.

Acknowledging the team led by Bradford Kimball ’24 that began this run, You-Yan Wang ’26 says, “I think, for us, it has always been about continuing that legacy. To pick up right where they left off was certainly a special experience for us last year, and being able to climb the mountain again this year felt super rewarding.”

That data proving their last-round dominance, along with their consistent practice of playing along to old HSQS episodes with buzzers, gives the team their nerve in nail-biting situations. “It really reassures us going into that final round that, no matter what,” YouYan says, “we can storm back or really stomp on it and build an insurmountable gap during those 90 seconds.”

That climb through the Season 17 bracket of 17 Massachusetts schools included victories over Cambridge Rindge and Latin, Belmont, Mansfield, and finally, Sharon High School—two of them thrilling, come-from-behind wins. But those, apparently, are squarely in the wheelhouse of team veterans You-Yan, Andreas Bai ’27, Dean Riaz ’28, and rookie Alec Bailey ’26. In the championship game, for example, BB&N was down by 80 points after two rounds, down by 30 after three rounds, and then they outscored Sharon in the last round 180 to 40 to win the trophy.

“With our backs to the wall, they came out just swinging!” says Chip Rollinson, math teacher and Trivia Club and Quiz Bowl Team co-advisor along with English teacher Sam Crihfield. Known for his

HSQS host Joe Hanson had delivered only part of the last question— “In the 18th century, what became the official language”—when Andreas buzzed in to beat the game-ending chime. After a slight pause, he said, “French,” which won them the match by just 5 points.

(The rest of the question, by the way, was “. . . of the Russian imperial court under Catherine the Great?”)

“They always believed in themselves and each other,” says Coadvisor Crihfield. “I think that’s their super power.”

Community News BB&N Announces Junior-Year English and History Paper Prize Winners This fall the History and Social Sciences Department and the English Department announced the winners of their junior-year writing prizes for essays written last winter and spring.

Four BB&N seniors have received top honors in the annual Junior Profile Contest. The panel of judges—working writers and editors—has awarded first prize to Sarah Hirsch ’26, second prize to Ryan Clay ’26, and honorable mentions to Sadie Saarony ’26 and YouYan Wang ’26.

The judges noted that of the 22 outstanding profiles in the pool, “This collection of profiles demonstrates that BB&N students can bear witness to the lives of others, no matter how socioeconomically, intellectually, or politically different. They have accomplished this not only with impeccable neutrality, but also with heart.”

Among the professions depicted are a guitar maker, a midwife, a teenage makeup artist, a sushi chef, a farm manager, a cheesemonger, a symphony conductor, a Disney princess, and a firearms dealer.

All juniors also write a 2,200–3,600-word research paper on a topic of significance in United States history from 1491 to the present. The outside panel of judges awarded the U.S. History Paper first prize to Caroline Kovacs ’26, second prizes to Ella Botein ’26 and Lukas Wellesley ’26, and third prize to David Xiong ’26.

BB&N Debate Team Enjoys “Undebatable” Success Established in 1937 at Browne & Nichols School, the BB&N debate team has a history of success in regional and world debate tournaments. This year alone, the squad earned four top-three finishes, including second place in the first tournament hosted at BB&N. Coached by Upper School English teacher Talayah Hudson, the team travels to competitions as close as the Rivers School and as far as Bermuda.

This March, the group trekked to Loomis Chaffee and walked away with the third-place school award. Individual awards went to the third-place Advanced 4-person team, which included David X. ’26, Gordon M. ’27, Justin H. ’27, and Salar S. ’26. The undefeated novice pair of David Z. ’28 and Rishaan C. ’29 placed fourth.

Notably, senior captain Salar won the Advanced Speaker competition and qualifying him for the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships 2026 in Bristol, England. At a previous tournament at Choate, junior Anha J. ’27 also qualified to compete at worlds in April. (The World’s Competition was in process as this magazine went to press.)

Science Department Launches Innovative Research Program with Local Laboratories

On what turned out to be a not-your-average Tuesday last fall, Harper Dubovik ’27 stared into a glass chamber at a rat heart suspended from an external perfusion system, keeping it alive. “I never could have imagined that in my whole life, especially in high school, I would be looking at this little pink raspberry-sized heart pumping away,” she says. “That was definitely one of the coolest things I’ve ever witnessed—a life-changing experience.”

Working in the Richard T. Lee Lab at Harvard University, Harper is in the inaugural cohort—along with David Moon ’27 and Violet Zhang ’27—of BB&N’s Honors Science Research Program (HSRP), a two-year course, including intervening summer work, that teaches essential skills needed to conduct a long-term STEM-related research project the students will devise and complete. Concurrently, students procure placements in one of the Greater Boston area’s many professional labs, where they get to work with a scientific researcher.

“It’s a good opportunity for kids to have an unusual high-school experience that allows for the researcher to give hands-on and practical knowledge, whereas I hope to provide the conceptual foundation knowledge that the students might need,” says science teacher Jared Courtney, who introduced the idea of the program after he arrived at BB&N in 2024.

Earlier in his career, Courtney had mulled ways to offer students the same inspiring experience of shadowing doctors and doing research that he had enjoyed during high school and college. “A great thing about science and STEM fields,” Courtney says, “is this mentoring model: people who were inspired and guided by a mentor are later interested in paying it forward.” So, he tapped into his contacts, reached out to strangers, and, while teaching at other schools over the last fifteen years, devised and ran similar programs, which evolved with the students’ experiences. He realized that, as eager as mentors were to work with kids, they weren’t able to spend time teaching what they needed to know. “My idea then was to structure the students’ experience, to acclimate them so they could ask questions and actually do science in a lab in a way that usually doesn’t happen until graduate school.”

With Courtney’s support, BB&N’s pioneering HSRP students are enjoying advanced, hands-on lab involvement while making valuable contacts. Eager for “a more complex experience with different lab techniques,” Harper applied to the program, but her time at the Lee Lab has given her much more. She values the independence and greater responsibility she feels, the practice of having an open mind and approaching problems from different angles—strategies addressed in the course’s required summer reading, Think Like a Freak, and echoed in Courtney’s class and in the Lee Lab. “My mentor challenges me to be uncomfortable,” Harper says. “I might not know the answer, but I can use what I’ve learned so far about different topics to puzzle things together. It’s been really valuable to learn that I can do that.”

After completing some assigned reading on various cardiac-research processes, Harper says she found it “interesting to see how what I’d learned actually comes into play. That was really cool.”

Harper joined the Lee Lab just as a groundbreaking new project got underway, a terrific opportunity for her “to be growing with the project and learning along with the researchers,” she says. The experiments she has witnessed on living rat hearts contribute to the development of a high-resolution, flexible, and stretchable electronic mesh encompassing the outside surface of the heart to detect and correct abnormal heart rhythms, such as atrial fibrillation. Harper’s mentor at Lee Lab, Postdoctoral Fellow in Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology Hannah Fandl, notes the dangers of AFib, particularly, which can interrupt blood flow and increase the risk of stroke and heart failure. “While current treatment options are largely focused on addressing symptoms, such as blood clots, or require a trip to the hospital to resolve abnormal electrical rhythm, this technology has the potential to transform treatment by continuously identifying and resolving irregular electrical circuits in real time—potentially before they fully develop,” she explains. “The device could shift care from reacting to AFib after it occurs to preventing it at its earliest stages.” After months of experimentation on the rat heart, the researchers plan to move on to guinea pigs, then a larger animal, and then humans.

In addition to the awe-inspiring and stimulating experience with the science itself, the lab offers Harper time to learn from an adult in what perhaps feels like more of a real-world setting than school.

“I honestly just love talking to my mentor, Hannah,” Harper says. “She’s so interesting and so good at explaining things. To be able to mentor and teach and infuse a younger person with such interest and to keep piquing my curiosity—she’s amazing!”

From her vantage point, mentor Hannah Fandl believes that working in a lab can be both fun and transformative for high-school students, who see that progress often results from creative thinking and exploring new ideas. At the same time, though, “students learn that things do not always work the first time, and learning to adapt, persist, and continue moving forward is a fundamental part of discovery,” she says. “Giving students the opportunity to engage in this process helps them develop qualities that are essential for the next generation of innovators and problem solvers.”

Like Harper, her fellow cohort members Violet and David already feel empowered enough to count themselves among that next generation. Stationed in the Boland Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital, Violet explains, “Instead of the more well-known treatments like chemotherapy or some type of drug that can fight cancer, we’re essentially trying to use the immune system to fight it” by researching T cells and their potential salutary effect on tumors. Her experience, which she characterizes as “compelling and inspiring,” has taught her that “you don’t always have to know the answer to everything, and uncertainty is a major part of the research process—and life in general. It’s made me more open to making mistakes and learning from them,” she says.

Across town at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, David is working in a Neurosurgery Department lab focused on glioblastoma, an aggressive brain tumor. “We’re trying to get Herpes Virus 1, modified to be safe, to reactivate the immune system, which would try to attack the virus and then also the cancer,” David says. He is using his computer-science skills to vet a computer application used to visualize tumors.

“Even though I’m still in high school, I can still do a lot, which has made me more confident,” David says.

“I think it’s kind of mind-blowing that I get to work on stuff like this. I mean, we’re literally trying to cure

Preparing the students to contribute in useful ways during their weekly fourto-six-hour lab placements, Courtney focuses his HSRP classes on commondenominator skills: writing, speaking, collaborating, reading scientific articles with greater comprehension, and dealing with practicalities like research funding and peer reviews. Reporting on their individual lab work, the students have become more assured and knowledgeable week by week.

“It’s a very short time that I am the expert in the room,” he says. “Very quickly, they become the experts and I’m a learner, and that’s very rewarding as an educator.”

It’s thrilling for the students, too—as they see themselves in a new light. “I feel that it’s opened my mind and shown me so many possibilities and paths that I can take when I’m older,” Harper says. “I’m so fortunate to have this opportunity now!”

EMPOWERING THE NEXT GENERATION OF EDUCATORS: BB&N Launches Penn Fellows Program This fall BB&N’s Upper School campus welcomed two new faces to its faculty cohort—not unusual for the start of an academic year—but there was something different about history teacher Emma Grayeb and mathematics teacher Virginia Heinsen. The two teachers were the first participants in an innovative collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education residency program.

partners with in the program. “When I was looking at BBN’s website, I loved their core values of kindness, inquiry, and integrity. I think what really stood out to me was ‘kindness’…I felt like that was one that I hadn’t necessarily seen on a lot of school websites. When I interviewed, I absolutely adored all of the faculty and students that I met…and I felt like this was the place for me.”

Known at BB&N as the Penn Fellows Program, this new endeavor enables aspiring and early career teachers to receive a master’s degree in education while completing an intensive two-year teaching fellowship at a partner school, in this case, BB&N. Much like a teaching hospital model or BB&N’s longtenured Lower School Teacher’s Training Institute collaboration with Lesley University, the program allows committed educators to join a mentored, real work environment as they synchronously take classes and earn credits towards their degree.

Both Grayeb and Heinsen began the year by teaching two classes, one independently and one co-taught with their mentor. Beginning in the second trimester, they began leading both classes independently. And next year, they’ll teach three classes. Given the virtual studies both are still pursuing through UPenn toward their Master’s degrees, it’s a rigorous road, but a gratifying one.

Jed Lippard, Chief Learning Officer and head of BB&N’s Teaching and Learning Office, was thrilled to pilot the program at BB&N after learning about it from a former trustee and parent, Agnes Scanlan P’18. “We really loved the idea that BB&N could be a teacher training institute,” Lippard says. “Not only at the Lower School, where we’ve had our decades-long partnership with Lesley University…but also by placing young educators into the field at the Middle and Upper School campuses.”

In Heinsen’s case the program wasn’t even on her radar until she applied to BB&N following college.

“BB&N recommended I apply for the Penn Fellowship when I applied here for a math teaching job,” the Yale graduate notes. “In hindsight, it’s a much better spot to be in for your first year of teaching since you have so much more scaffolding…. I have a lot of built-in support through my mentor, through the program director, as well as just all of my colleagues.”

Grayeb, a Holy Cross graduate, discovered BB&N while she was researching schools that UPenn 20

“I have graduate school coursework while I’m also teaching at BB&N,” Grayeb notes. “But as I’m doing that coursework, I’m able to directly apply this new, exciting educational theory I’m learning to my classroom, which is wonderful.”

As hoped, the program is paying dividends in many directions, not only for Heinsen and Grayeb. Students receive instruction from carefully trained educators who have studied the best and most recent practices in the field, and BB&N’s existent teachers benefit from an infusion of new ideas and the perspective of colleagues closer to their students’ age.

“Virginia puts a lot of thought into how she structures her lessons, and I’ve been impressed with her ability to create a productive, yet fun classroom environment,” Heinsen’s mentor at BB&N, math teacher Joe Cyr, notes. “While doing observations of Virginia’s teaching, I can’t help but to reflect on my own work. The experience has definitely made me a more introspective and, I hope, better teacher.”

History teacher Suzy Glazer, echoes these sentiments in her role as Grayeb’s mentor. “Emma is deeply invested in teaching students not only the content, but also the skills needed to be an historian… She

It’s also nice to work with someone who has the experience of being a student more recently.”

Although a master’s degree may be the goal in joining the Penn Fellows program, both Grayeb and Heinsen agree that the real prize has been working with the students at BB&N. “I’ve been really impressed by how engaged they are academically, and how willing they are to challenge ideas and be critical thinkers,” Grayeb says.

Heinsen agrees, commenting how fun it’s been getting to know students on a human level, beyond the classroom.

“It’s been really nice to hear what’s important to the kids in their lives … what sticks with them, the things they’re stressed about, the things they’re excited about,” she notes.

“That changes after high school, and it’s fun to be sucked back into this world, sympathizing and remembering when I was in their spot.”

As the program wraps up a successful launch, the school is already excited for the future, one which will add two additional teachers next year; an Upper School science teacher and a Middle School math teacher.

“These Penn Fellows join departments, they bring new ideas and new energy, and so it’s a win-win all around,” Lippard says. “It’s been a really positive, formative experience… and it’s just a really wonderful way to keep the whole school current.”

A LEGACY OF CURIOSITY, CAMARADERIE, AND CHARITY: COMMEMORATING THE BB&N PARENT BOOK GROUP

BY SHARON KRAUSS Last spring, after 27 years, approximately 185 books read, and over $260,000 contributed to the Financial Aid Fund, the BB&N Book Group collectively turned its final page and shelved itself among the most innovative and successful chapters in the school’s history of parent initiatives.

“We began as a disparate group of BB&N parents, cobbled together to support a parentrun auction,” says Barbara Roberts P’97, ’99, “but we became a close group of friends, led by wonderful BB&N teachers, who shared books, meals, laughter, and life.”

Co-chairing the fundraising auction in the spring of 1997, Francine Crawford P ’97 had the inspired idea of offering a parents’ book group led by a BB&N faculty member. She got her son, Will, to ask his English teacher, Roger Stacey, if he were willing to contribute his time to the cause. “I was initially thinking of a one-shot guest appearance,” Crawford says. “Never did I think we would end up with a series. That is all credited to Roger.” In turn, Stacey recruited colleagues, and, after a vigorous bidding battle between two groups, the victors— about fifteen women—met for their first discussion in the fall of 1997.

“The members were a remarkable group of women with unusual generosity of spirit, a gift for friendship, and lively intellectual curiosity,” Stacey says. “What they and my highly capable colleagues created and sustained turned out 22

to be a distinctive and rewarding undertaking for all involved—as well as an unprecedented contribution to the BB&N scholarship fund. I was honored to be involved.”

Following a successful first school-year of monthly book-club gatherings, Crawford recalls, “We discussed how we could continue to benefit the school in response to the generosity of the faculty giving their time to us.” Each agreed to donate $500 annually—though many parents gave considerably more, and the amount kept rising with inflation—to their own earmarked pool, The Past Parent Financial Aid Fund.

“The book group kept our connection to BB&N alive,” Crawford says, long past the typical span of parental donations to a secondary school.

Hilary Wodlinger P’96, ’99 attributes the group’s longevity to the role of the faculty, several of whom continued their involvement after retiring.

“People would say, ‘You actually discussed the books?’ Yes, we really did,” she says, “because we were led by teachers who came prepared with really good questions. That’s what made it work.”

At first, to lighten their prep time, faculty members led discussions on books they were currently teaching, “such as works by Plato, Aeschylus, and Shakespeare,” says Fleet Hill P’92, ’96. “Our children were quite surprised by the choices!” Later, the selections broadened, including Just Kids by Patti Smith, Horse by

Geraldine Brooks, and Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown. Equally important as the book-talk, Hill says, was the “social aspect; we spent the first hour of every meeting socializing over a meal in our homes, often with a menu inspired by our reading.”

In their commitment to supporting both the school and their abiding friendships, these women have written their own well-illustrated story of a meaningful BB&N community.

G OA L : To elevate students’ athletic experiences with new fields for practices and games, enhance student well-being with more consistent scheduling, and deepen our impact as community stewards through our partnership with the City of Watertown.

Opened in Fall 2023, the Grove Street campus includes two new athletic fields for football, soccer, lacrosse, and softball practices and games, viewing stands, and parking spaces for students during the school day.

Through a public-private partnership with the City of Watertown, Grove Street also provides access to adjacent fields at Watertown’s Filippello Park.

During the school year, BB&N teams have access to the full 20-acre campus every afternoon until 6 p.m. so that all Middle and Upper School teams can practice during after-school hours at either the Grove

Bethany Sanders ‘10 (married to Zach Sanders ‘10) | Bethany is a nurse practitioner at NeighborHealth Q: What’s a favorite memory from your time at BB&N that still sticks with you?

A: Obviously becoming best friends with Zach during our time on the track team junior spring!

Q: What inspired you to start giving back to BB&N? A: Realizing I wasn’t a kid anymore and that it was my time to start giving back to important organizations that I believe in. BB&N changed my life in many ways, and I wanted to start showing my appreciation for all that it did for me.

Q: What does being a part of BB&N’s consistent giving society mean to you?

A: Of course I am proud, as it’s very important for me to show my BB&N loyalty in this way.

Q: What keeps BB&N top of mind for you year after year?

A: Just never forgetting the critical role that BB&N played in my life.

Q: What does it mean to you to support current BB&N students today?

A: I received generous financial aid from BB&N. It brings me so much joy to give to the financial aid fund and be part of someone else’s incredible journey. Also, now that my niece, Maya Berg, is at the Lower School, it’s even sweeter!

Q: What would you say to other young alumni who are considering making BB&N a giving priority?

A: We are so fortunate to be BB&N alumni and part of this incredible community. Even if it’s a small amount, giving is a great way to say thank you!

Alexa Horwitz ’12 | Alexa works in Marketing & Communications at Material Impact Q: What’s a favorite memory from your time at BB&N that still sticks with you?

A: I loved being a part of The Vanguard and have great memories of “Paste Up” weekends spent in the office with the editorial team and our faculty advisors, Ms. Krauss and Mr. Hudson. Those long hours were a true team effort, and there was always a real sense of shared pride when we published each edition. Today, I work in marketing and communications, where I continue to put that foundation to use every day.

Q: What inspired you to start giving back to BB&N? A: As a Lifer, I spent 14 years as a student at BB&N. When I graduated from the Upper School, I started giving back because it felt like a natural way to stay connected to a place that had been such a constant part of my life. I wanted to continue that relationship not just as a student, but now as an alum.

Q: What does being part of BB&N’s consistent giving society mean to you?

A: BB&N was woven into nearly every stage of my childhood and adolescence. Being part of the giving society on a consistent basis helps sustain the programs and culture that had such an impact on me, so current and future students can build their own meaningful experiences there.

Q: What keeps BB&N top of mind for you year after year?

A: Staying connected to the exciting initiatives underway and seeing how the campuses continue to grow keeps BB&N top of mind for me. As I’ve progressed further in my professional career, I’ve come to appreciate even more how much I learned at BB&N, not just academically, but in how to think critically, communicate clearly, and collaborate effectively.

Q: What would you say to other young alumni who are considering making BB&N a giving priority?

A: BB&N gives students opportunities, mentorship, and experiences that shaped who they are, and supporting the school is a way to help ensure those opportunities continue for the next generation. For me, it’s less about the size of the gift and more about being part of a collective effort to invest in a community that invested in us.

Parents Show Gratitude to Faculty and Staff through Year-End Appreciation Fund For the sixth consecutive year, BB&N parents came together at the holidays to say “thank you” to the faculty, staff, and coaches who work with and support their children every day, both in and out of the classroom.

Begun during COVID, the Parents’ Association Faculty and Staff Appreciation Fund has become an annual opportunity for parents to demonstrate their generosity and appreciation to all members of the community. This year, more than 460 parents participated in this initiative, contributing $146,894 that enabled BB&N to distribute a year-end bonus of $440 to all full-time employees and a proportionate amount to part-time faculty and coaches.

As Head of School Jen Price noted when sharing this news with faculty and staff, “Once again, I am struck by the generosity of our parents, and the thoughtful care they take to make sure this gift is shared equitably among all of you. This gift is a clear reminder of the deep appreciation our families have for your work. Every day, they see the way you inspire, challenge, support, and encourage their children, often in moments that stay with them long after the school day ends. This impact is the foundation of the trust families place in our community.”

San Francisco area alumni gathered earlier this year to network at our first Building Bridges & Networks regional reception. The evening brought together alumni from across industries, in classes ranging from 1952 to 2021, for meaningful networking and the chance to reconnect with fellow alumni in the Bay Area.

In addition to Head of School Jen Price, we were thrilled to have special guest David Strodel ’78, P’14, ’16, Upper School Science Teacher and Bivouac Director, in attendance.

A highlight of the night was David Sze ’84 accepting the 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award. In David’s remarks to the group, he cited the remarkable faculty and staff at BB&N during his time as a student.

Chase opened Padel Boston in December of 2024. The event was full of engaging conversations and plenty of action on the courts. Whether the alums were picking up a racket for the first time or showing off their seasoned skills, everyone embraced the fun and friendly spirit of the game.

Biggar Award, and the Independent School League Award of Excellence. It was inspiring to see generations of BB&N athletes gathered at 30 Gerry’s Landing— the former Pechet family home that had been purchased by the school in 2015—reinforcing BB&N’s commitment to both academic excellence and high-level, competitive athletics. We remain dedicated to celebrating our alumni achievements both on campus and in the years following their time here.

Alumni, families, and friends gathered to enjoy two days of athletic games and lively activities, highlighted by the newly added Dragon Foam experience that brought joyful energy to the field and plenty of unforgettable moments. The field was dotted with BB&N Affinity Group tables that proudly showcased and celebrated the rich diversity of our community. The Parents’ Association Spiritwear team was in full swing offering BB&N apparel and accessories, giving families and alumni the perfect opportunity to show their school pride. A great weekend was had by all!

ALUMNI ICE HOCKEY GAME December 27 2025 On December 27, alumni laced up their skates and hit the ice for the annual alumni hockey game at the Nicholas Athletic Center. BB&N’ers from across the decades came together for a friendly competition filled with laughter, great plays, and nostalgia. Family and friends cheered on from the Stonestreet Lounge, and following the game, alumni gathered down the street at Donohue’s Bar and Grill for further conversation and to catch up.

We welcomed Lifer Alumni and both current and former faculty back to the Lower School for a nostalgic evening of fun. We gathered in the gym to play LS-themed trivia, complete with elementary themed prizes such as Saltines, Cuisenaire rods, and of course, a recorder. After enjoying a collection of class photos and eating Armando’s Pizza and Ma MaGoo’s chicken fingers, the group toured the Lower School and shared reminiscences of their time at the campus. The evening was rich with memories, reconnections, and the joy of reliving a shared experience.

October 18-19 delivered an exceptionally beautiful fall weekend to celebrate the 60th Head Of The Charles Regatta, highlighted by the Women’s Alumnae 8 boat made up of Meg Barry ’93, Deirdre Brennan ’91, Meredith Coburn ’03, Julia Petropoulos Coupland ’93, Klara Kuemmerle ’19, Genna Lamphier ’20, Jameson McKenna ’19, and Melisa Nasella ’95.

We also welcomed back to the boathouse the family of Ryan Neff ’89, who passed away in 2008. His family was able to take out the boat they gifted to BB&N in his honor.

On Sunday, the boathouse welcomed alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff, and supporters for an unforgettable day on the water. The beloved tradition of afternoon clam chowder was served alongside breakfast pastries and refreshments. Three student boats competed: Women’s U17 Four, Girls Junior Four, and Boys Junior Four. They drew in cheers from the Eliot Bridge and along the Charles River as they powered past the BB&N boathouse.

Photos by Shawn Read Reunion Weekend 2025 was extra special as we welcomed alumni from the 0’s & 5’s back to campus, with many of them returning for the first time since reunion 2015. The weekend was filled with laughter, stories, and plenty of moments to reconnect with classmates and faculty. From taking tours of the Upper School led by current students, to taking photos at the photo booth and flipping through yearbooks, there were smiles everywhere you looked.

Trentwell “Pete” White passed away on August 25, 2025. Pete was a member of Browne & Nichols Class of 1950 and took great pride in his class. He gave them the nickname the “Nifty Fifty” and was a leader of the group that connects Buckingham and B&N Class of 1950 alums.

Pete was a long-time BB&N volunteer, having served as a member of the Alumni Council, Class uKnighter, Reunion, and BB&N Fund volunteer. He also served as a regional volunteer for BB&N activities in the Washington, D.C. area.

Pete grew up in and around the Greater Boston area, with his parents and two sisters Meredith “Mousy” and MaryWinne.

He attended Browne & Nichols, graduating in 1950 in a class of about 30! He participated in sports (including football, wrestling, and basketball) but moved to coaching crew after a heart murmur was discovered. He also appeared on stage with classmates Tony Perkins and Tammy Grimes (Tony winner for originating the Molly role in The Unsinkable Molly Brown on Broadway).

Pete also appeared in the role of Strephon in the Gilbert & Sullivan comic opera Iolanthe in his junior year. Pete had taken piano lessons in his youth, and an entry in his Browne & Nichols senior yearbook noted that Pete and Tony Perkins often competed for use of a piano at B&N. Pete was extremely active with BB&N as an alum, working tirelessly up until his passing to keep his class and members of other classes actively connected and communicating, arranging lunches and other get-togethers, and keeping everyone involved. In 2023 he was awarded the BB&N Medal for his extensive efforts.

Brianna Smith ’10, Associate Director of Alumni Engagement & Giving says, “I will always remember asking Pete how he was doing whenever we were on a Zoom or on the phone and his response was always ‘Well, I woke up today…’. Pete always invited me to enjoy lunch with members of the ‘Nifty Fifty’ in Hingham, which was a halfway point for members living in the Cambridge area and those living on the Cape.”

From the Archives BB&N’S LOWER SCHOOL THROUGH THE YEARS

The Lower School is BB&N’s oldest extant campus, dating back to 1892 when Miss Markham moved her school and home into a new space built on a former pear orchard. The Markham Building was joined in 1920 by the newly built Brick Building, and the school slowly grew over subsequent years with acquisitions of several houses on the street, referred to today as Kelsey (1892), Morrison (1897), and Bridgman (c. 1920). The first new building constructed on campus after 1920 came more than 40 years later in the form of the Morse Building, which opened in 1967.

Morse was designed specifically to reflect a home-like feeling to help the youngest students adjust to school, with students moving further up the building as they rose to each grade. The architect’s statement from 1968 explained that “in keeping with its educational purpose, the whole building is meant to be open, to connect children with many possibilities, to heighten their sense of awareness of the many things to explore.”

After the Morse Building opened, the Lower School saw smaller renovations, including some 1976 renovations to Morse and 1985 renovations to the Brick Building. The campus wouldn’t see another major change until Fall of 2001, when two large building projects came to fruition. The first was the renovation of St. Anne’s Convent at 15 Craigie Street from a convent and school into a home for the Head of School. BB&N first made an agreement with the sisters of St. Anne’s in 1986, when it was decided that the students at the convent would join BB&N and Sisters Natalie, Judith, and Catherine Louise would continue living in St. Anne’s for the remaining years of their lives. After their passing, BB&N became the official owner of the property in Spring 2000 and began plans to renovate the space as a home for the Head of School.

In 2001, Rebecca Upham joined the community as the new Head of School and became the first new resident of St. Anne’s.

The second major change to BB&N’s Lower School campus came in September 2001 with the grand opening of the Lehner Center for Science, Art, and Technology, which brought with it three science classrooms, a bright and spacious music room, and a technology classroom. As part of the same project, the campus also welcomed a new turf field. The Lehner Center and turf field were funded through the school’s major capital campaign titled Campaign 2000: Bridging Two Centuries.

The next major capital campaign, Opening Minds, ensured that the necessary improvements to the Lower School campus continued. In 2009, BB&N’s Beginners grade shifted to a full-day program, and the campaign’s funding supported the students and faculty with a thorough renovation of the Beginners classrooms in the Morse Building. The dedicated Beginners suite included new classrooms opening onto one large central room, a play area, art spaces, and a shared kitchen. The campaign also included renovations to the Morse Building Library and a fully renovated playground for younger students. In 2014, the school continued to grow and adapt to fit new student needs with its new Outdoor Classroom, which featured tree stump seats and a wooden bridge.

BB&N’s Campus Master Plan continues to focus on greatly needed improvements to the Lower School’s campus. In 2024, the school purchased the house at 5 Buckingham Place, which currently supports the catering staff who help provide lunches to students on campus. The Lower School remains the only one of BB&N’s three campuses without a space to cook fresh, hot meals for Lower and Middle School students, and both the school’s strategic plan and Bright Bold Next campaign are aiming to remedy this fact and continue dynamically adapting the school’s oldest campus to fit the needs of its youngest students, now and in the years to come.

Grateful for her BB&N Experience When I think about BB&N, what stays with me most is the feeling of being truly known. As a student, my teachers saw me—not just academically, but as a whole person—and supported me in ways that built my confidence and encouraged my curiosity. That sense of being recognized and valued shaped how I saw myself and how I learned to engage with the world. Long after graduation, those relationships and memories have stayed with me, influencing how I approach my work, my values, and my understanding of what strong communities look like.

That experience also helped shape my professional path. Today, I work as a Development and Planned Giving Consultant in a field that is deeply relationship-driven and often misunderstood. Planned giving isn’t about complexity, wealth, or age—it’s deeply personal and is about intention. It’s about aligning your values with the organizations that have mattered most to you over time. At its best, planned giving grows naturally out of trust, consistency, and care. My work is centered on helping people see that legacy giving is accessible, thoughtful, and rooted in personal connection, not transaction.

My decision to include BB&N in my estate plans grew quietly and organically from gratitude. It wasn’t about recognition or making a statement—it was about staying connected to a place that played such a formative role in my life. BB&N helped shape who I am, and this is simply a way of honoring that relationship and ensuring that future students can experience the same sense of being known and supported.

Schools like BB&N exist because people remain connected to them over time, and for me, legacy giving is a meaningful way to remain part of a community that will always matter.

A planned gift to BB&N is less about looking ahead than it is about looking back with appreciation—and choosing to stay connected to a place that helped shape my story, long after my time on campus ended.
