Country living in the South of the Metro

Q

uiet and rustic: two things most people consider when buying a new home. At Alta Monte, homeowners and guests are welcomed with a modern country scenery.

AN EXPERIENCE OF A MODERN COUNTRYSIDE LIVING

The perfect combination of the rustic charms of Tagaytay and the contemporary structural design transcend conventional residences. The Leisure Suites, a cluster home with six units in one cluster, is the first of its kind in the mountain resort city that provides every homeowner great living spaces complemented with laidback ambiance. Suites vary from 56 square meters (one

bedroom) to 123 square meters (three bedrooms). Every fully-furnished unit has a scenic bay window that emanates a cozy feeling. The 2-bedroom and 3-bedroom units have a split level design that resembles to an attic. Located along Magallanes Avenue, Alta Monte offers exclusivity thru its gated community and boasts wide-ranging amenities such as multipurpose club house, swimming pools, and recreational & sports facilities. “We can’t be happier with the choice we made. It is truly our home away from home. We feel safe and secured 24/7. Alta Monte is very convenient to most restaurants in Tagaytay City, close to markets and grocery stores. We don’t get bored because the casino is just few minutes away and always open. The weather of Tagaytay is a big plus to us because it’s comfortable whole year round. The Clubhouse that can accommodate large party is always available. Wide roads and sidewalks allow us to do our daily walking. Over all…it is a great place to live, friendly neighbors and a great investment!”

- Lei G. Hatfield, Leisure Suite unit owner

“Charmingly nostalgic. The best thing about this unit is that it doesn’t hit you with any ounce of intimidation despite the modern convenience. Its quaint interiors remind me of the tree house I used to dream of when I was younger—the rustic features and how the light seeps in from the window that simply exude the feeling of being home—only now, it doesn’t literally have to be a tree.” -M Portez, Managing Editor

A

few days ago while having lunch with my friends, I noticed that a few of them took pictures of the food. This in turn sparked a conversation about the rise of social media and peoples’ desire to share what they are doing—to post a status update. One of my friends said, “If you don’t photograph it and post it, then it never happened.” I thought this was a rather profound statement—the need for visual proof. As our discussion progressed, we were debating the pros and cons of being able to quickly share information instantly. Indeed, there are immense powers of social media that perhaps we have yet to fully comprehend. Having the ability to quickly share information in times of danger or emergency, to make someone laugh or entertain, or simply to share knowledge have enormous benefits. However, at the same time, it is incredibly influential—it can make us smarter, change decision-making and opinions immediately or over the course of time. But when certain information gets into the wrong hands, the results can be quite

14

BALIKBAYANMAGAZINE.COM

terrifying—which is why the role of media is incredibly important and valuable. We can shape, define, and ensure the quality of the narrative in order for the audience to make informed, sound decisions. Despite recent news headlines in terms of terrorism and war, climate change, and the volatility of the global economy just to name a few, I have not wavered from being optimistic about the future of our World—I find it too troublesome to be consumed by cynicism or pessimism—as a parent, you have to be. Yet, we have to remember to pause, analyze, and think about where we are going and what’s next. If we are afraid or unhappy, we must decide to make bold changes. Truly the World has changed and become thousands of times more complex despite the advancements in technology that makes our lives easier, more organized, more intelligent, and more connected. I have 5 children and I often wonder what kind of World they will be living in when they are my age. I also wonder, has the World always been this scary? Or is it because information can seemingly be shared, read, and watched from every

corner of the Planet and we can quickly find out and learn about what is going on? As an optimist, I prefer to believe that the best is yet to come, for a developing and rising nation like the Philippines—surely this is true—and you can absolutely count on the Asian Journal to report on what’s happening in our Motherland and within the Global Filipino community. Living in the Philippines is very different from living in the United States. For example, in the U.S., there have been more mass shootings than days in 2015. Parents live in fear, worrying if their children are even safe at school— this is not a problem in the Philippines. Growing up, my friends would dream of moving to America. But today and much more frequently, I now hear my friends say, “I wish I could live and retire in the Philippines.” And that, in itself, is perhaps what’s next in 2016. –– Roger L. ineteen years and three presidents later, APEC has finally returned to the Philippines. With $208 million spent, international and domestic flights cancelled, roads closed, and businesses unable to hold office— was the Philippines hosting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) worth it? The short answer: For the short and long-term, absolutely. APEC’s 21-member economies account for al-

most half of global trade and nearly 60% of global gross domestic product (GDP). The APEC summit is the highest-level and most influential economic summit in the Asia Pacific Region. Founded in 1989, APEC’s mission is to ignite free and open trade and investment as it acts like an incubator for ideas and policies in order to influence change on a host of topics ranging from climate change, gender equality, health standards, and economic disparity.

ith the creation of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC), APEC is no longer simply a government affair. ABAC recommends policies to government leaders and with that, public and private partnerships are formed. For the Philippines, the council is comprised of shipping magnate Doris Magsaysay-HO, Ayala Corporation Chairman and CEO Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, Jollibee Foods Chairman Tony Tan Caktiong, and Guillermo Luz of the National Competiveness Council.

Preparation and Return on Investment For the past three years, the Philippines prepared to be the host nation of APEC 2015. These preparations included security, airport arrivals, transportation, venues, food, uniforms, architecture, hotels, and cultural presentations. Driving from Bonifacio Global City or Makati to Manila’s main International Airport, the capital city’s dense traffic explodes into absolute chaos. However, it is not simply the result of the countless number of cars ravaging MetroManila, but also the tenuous development

of the brand new, towering, four-lane expressway leading to new casinos, hotels, resorts, and restaurants. Just a few days removed from the terror attacks in Paris and Beirut and several days after the bombing of a commercial plane over Egypt, the Philippines found itself in a peculiar position as the host nation for global leaders in politics, business, and diplomacy. Scores of industry leaders came to the country to discuss foreign investment and trade partnerships in order to drive inclusive economic growth on the macro and micro level. Undoubtedly, security was the biggest challenge as arrangements were much more stringent and complicated than when the country first hosted APEC in the pre9/11 era, back in 1996, or even just recently when Pope Francis visited in January 2015. Having been the center for high profile leaders and meetings, the country was able to prove to the world that the Philippines is a safe, secure, peaceful, and beautiful nation. Despite the lucrative investment of $208 million, which was heavily criticized, government officials explained that the

money invested into the economy generated jobs and improved infrastructure. Simply put, the government had no choice but to “fix up” Ninoy Aquino International Airport along with the roads leading up to the venues in order to put the best face forward. However, critics questioned that if the country can make necessary preparations to host global leaders in such a short time span, then why can’t the government do it for their own people? Looking at the return on investment from the time Vietnam hosted APEC back in 2006, Vietnam has now received over $189 billion in total foreign direct investment (FDI) dating from 2006 to 2014. In addition to FDI, trade has significantly increased for Vietnam as well with bilateral trade between Vietnam and China now valued at $42.3 billion in 2014 alone. During the same period, VietnamU.S. trade has reached $25.5 billion, and Vietnam-South Korea trade is respectively valued at $20.9 billion. Just under a decade from it’s hosting, it is clear that Vietnam made a sound investment. Today, Vietnam has the third lowest unemployment rate in ASEAN, behind Thailand and Singapore. Unemployment rate in the Philippines in 2014 is almost the same as Vietnam’s in 2000. Speaking at the APEC CEO Summit, President Aquino, when asked about his specific message to investors, said, “I guess the central message is: We really invite you to come in now rather than tell us two years or three years from now that you should

have listened to our advice.” The President went on to cite specific cases of Japanese and American manufacturing companies that invested in the Philippines because of their belief in the potential of the country and the kind of workforce the country has to offer. The country continues to splurge on infrastructure development—with 57 projects in the pipeline for 2016 and beyond. Just last November 26, 2015, the Senate voted for P3.002 trillion as the national budget for 2016.

The Guestlist Leaders of some of the World’s biggest economies joined President Benigno Aquino III such as US President Barack Obama, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, to Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau, and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Some of the seven thousand delegates included business leaders like Alibaba’s Jack Ma, Uber’s David Plouffe, and AirAsia’s Tony Fernandes. Over two thousand foreign journalists flew into the country from the likes of the Asian Journal, CNN, Bloomberg, and CBS News. And as a result of the international press coverage, the Philippines was able to generate millions of dollars worth of publicity as it reached millions of audiences around the World which should directly result in remarkable increases in tourism for 2016 and beyond.

PHILIPPINES 2016 ( 01 )

The Philippines hosted APEC under the theme, “Building Inclusive Economies, Building a Better World,” as the country desires to push for inclusive growth, which is hallmarked by the role of small and medium enterprises—which makes up 97% of business in APEC economies. This is largely considered to be the APEC Summit’s major highlight several economists praise. In the Philippines, SMEs account for a third of the gross domestic product and employ more than half of the entire domestic labor market. However, the government must first solve policy gaps and conflicts

in making the business environment more inviting and friendly both internationally and domestically. In 2014, the Philippines’ GDP has ballooned to $284.60 billion from $82.85 billion in 1996. Because of the significant rise of the Philippines in the past several years, many member-economies have grown to be intrigued and curious about what’s fueling the growth of the nation. Last year, China showcased its infrastructure developments. The Philippines showcased its English proficiency and the hospitality of Filipinos that is unrivaled in the entire region. For the past few years, the Philippines became the fifth largest economy in all of Southeast Asia with the third fasted

annual growth rate in the entire region. According to the World Bank, in terms of GDP, the Philippines represents 0.5% of the world economy—making it have the status of a lower middle-income country. The Philippines has significantly benefited from being a member nation of APEC since the total export receipts to APEC member economies amounts to $52.7 billion from 2014 to 2015. The country’s top exports to APEC include electronic products, manufactures, woodcraft and furniture, machinery and transport equipment, and minerals with the major trading partners being Japan, the United States, China, Singapore, and South Korea. The economic policies pursued over the past three decades have also contributed to the growth and expansion of the middle

class in the Philippines. When economic production and growth is productive, unemployment should be lower and income should increase as businesses hire labor to meet the demands of the growing economy. A healthy and stable economy indicates high consumption and production would equate to higher profits for companies, which in turn creates more jobs. Although not felt across the board, with a growing economy, household living conditions should move in an upward direction, yet people are left behind in this growth process and as a result, the need to drive inclusive growth is vital to the Philippines as the strength of all developed nations is the strength of the middle class. President Aquino, in a speech at the CEO Summit on a policy of “inclusive

Aquino revealed that in 2013, over 99 percent of all business enterprises in the country are MSMEs, accounting for 63.7 percent of total employment. As such, Aquino has set out to pursue initiatives to assist smaller businesses by encouraging the concepts of inclusion, resilience, and sustainability. He mentioned that the government’s Access of Small Enterprises to Sound Lending Opportunities (ASENSO) program has already released R153.1 billion to over 174,000 enterprises from 2010 to 2014, and Magna Carta for MSMEs, which requires banks to allocate 10 percent of their total loan portfolio for credit to MSMEs.

With 4% of the national gross domestic product (GDP) going toward infrastructure, the Philippines’ primary focus is to maintain economic growth, which is fueled and ignited by a recent spike in foreign direct investment (FDI). Since 2010, money pouring into the country has tripled. Yet, FDI accounts for only 1.4% of the national income, which remains significantly lower than the Philippines’ regional counterparts. In 2016, this is expected to remarkably rise. As the tiger economies continued to mature for the past few decades, the Philippines is finally showing signs of maturation of its own. From 2008 to 2012, GDP grew from an average of 4.7% to 7.2% in 2013—much higher than any other East Asian country with the exception of China and all of this despite the Philippines being ravaged by the most powerful typhoon ever recorded on the planet in 2013.

The World Bank forecasts the Philippine economy to reach 7% this year and grow another 7% in 2016. Earlier this year in May 2015, Standard & Poor, the esteemed credit rating agency uplifted the country’s long-term outlook and credit rating to BBB— two notches above the investment grade baseline and higher than the powerful economies of Brazil and India. The S&P’s rating was a direct result of the country’s major improvements in stabilizing politics, better governance, and ease of doing business. For the past three years, revenue growth

has exceeded GDP thanks in large part to the reforms of the internal-revenue service and the customs bureau under the Aquino Administration. Also posting rapid and strong gains were investment and private consumption, which are largely influenced and aided by overseas remittance, the influx of tourists, and the business process outsourcing industry. Since the late 1990’s, remittance continues to steadily rise—a whopping $26 billion in 2014. For 2015, based on early projections, remittance is expected to surpass last year’s mark and further jump in 2016.

E-Peso begins its work of transforming communities into cashless societies

T

hough providing simplicity and immediacy, the use of cash for frequent transactions can be risky, costly, and inefficient for consumers and businesses, not to mention, the lack of traceability has encouraged the perpetration of fraud. Presently, 90% of transactions in the Philippines are still cash-based. This has become the driving force behind the E-Peso initiative with the mission to create a single electronic payment platform for all transactions in the country. Realizing the compelling benefits of an intuitive and high-performing electronic payment system, the municipality of San Mateo has made waves by signing an ordinance to implement E-Peso across its community, thereby allowing its constituents to be first wave participants in stepping towards a cashless society. San Mateo has signed a MOA with Genuisys, Inc., the company behind E-Peso, last November 16, 2015 to fulfill its mandate of implementing an efficient payment structure that will ease government- and business-related payments. The project will be facilitated in two phases, the first of which is set to begin this December. Universal ID’s will be provided for residency, government payments, and will enable Near Field Communication (NFC) powered tap payments. All transactions are recorded and can easily be monitored in a centralized database complete with user information, heightening transparency and tightening prevention of corruption and fraud, resulting ultimately to increased efficiencies and economic stimulation. E-Peso is a secure yet user-friendly payment platform that is built to meet the demands of the digital age. Ralph Santos, founder of E-Peso, has structured the system to be comprehensive and include basic and advanced payment capabilities to harmoniously cater to the needs of individuals, businesses, and government

bodies. “We are glad to be writing history here. E-Peso was created to address the problems associated with a cash-heavy society and shift the country’s financial infrastructure to be more sustainable. We want to promote efficiency, transparency, and accountability in all financial transactions, as well as broaden financial inclusion to empower the unbanked. This milestone with San Mateo signals bigger and better things to come for E-Peso as people get to actually experience the power of the E-Peso system,” he shares. The E-Peso dashboard empowers individuals by equipping them with a robust, intuitive platform capable of various payment capabilities. Users of the dashboard can send and receive funds, pay bills, load prepaid services, and keep track of all financial movements in real-time, introducing a new and innovative way of banking. Fund transfers in the E-Peso network are instant and available 24/7 at very competitive fees compared to what is currently offered in the market. All these

and more provide an unparalleled user experience that fits perfectly into today’s fast-paced digital world. Flexible, intuitive and secure, E-Peso provides the ideal platform for online transactions. Users from all around the country benefit from the functionalities the platform has to offer, from government payments to simple day-to-day transactions. Perceived as the future state of money, E-Peso has begun its journey in redefining the country’s financial structure and economy.

PH projected to be a $1-trillion economy by 2030, only one in Asia with improving credit prospects – IHS

T

he Philippines is projected to become a $1-trillion economy by 2030, and is cited by international analytics firm IHS Global Insight as the only sovereign entity in Asia with improving credit prospects.IHS, whose reports are used as reference by other organizations including credit-rating agencies, investment banks, and development institutions, cited the trend of improving financial fundamentals, investor confidence, and governance standards in the Philippines. In its “Sovereign Risk Review” report for the third quarter of 2015, IHS, which also assigns its own credit ratings, said it upgraded its outlook on the Philippines’ credit rating from “stable” to “positive.” The improved outlook means that the Philippines’ existing credit rating with IHS, set at the minimum investment grade of “BBB-“, has a chance of being raised over the near term. The Sovereign Risk Review compares and assesses every sovereign worldwide across ratings agencies. IHS said in the report that what’s more encouraging about the Philippines is that the strong macroeconomic fundamentals are combined with improvements in governance. “…apart from the clearly strengthened macro-financials over the last few years, the more recent upgrade to the Philippines’ outlook to positive in Q3 rested on improved governance standards and reforms enhancing competitiveness under the

Aquino administration,” it said in the report. The Philippines is the only sovereign in Asia that garnered a positive action from IHS. IHS recognized the Philippines’ comfortable liquidity as evidenced by sustained surpluses in its current account, as well as continually improving manageability of debt on the back of prudent fiscal management and growing economy. The Philippines’ current account – fueled by remittances, revenues from the business process outsourcing industry, and tourism receipts, among others – posted a surplus of $4.7 billion during the first six months of 2015. The country’s current account has been in surplus for 12 consecutive years, or since 2003. The Philippines’ general government debt as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP), a measure of debt manageability, is on a downward trend. It stood at 36.2 percent as of end-June 2015, consistently declining from a peak of 68.1 percent in 2003. “The Philippines has been on a long ratings upgrade trajectory over the last few years. The key driver to these upgrades has been successively strong current account surplus generation with newfound sources of export earnings other than workers’ remittances and lower energy import bills,” Jan Randolph, IHS director of sovereign risk, said in a statement. Rajiv Biswas, IHS chief economist for Asia-Pacific, estimated that the Philippines, with a gross domestic

product of about $292 billion, has the potential to become a $695-billion economy by 2025 and over a $1-trillion economy by 2030. “Two important growth drivers for the Philippines’ economy are the rapidly growing information technology-business process outsourcing (IT-BPO) sector and the strong flow of remittances from Filipino workers abroad,” Biswas said. “The rapid growth of the IT-BPO industry is also creating positive transmission effects for the rest of the economy, including rapid growth in demand for commercial floor space, underpinning the development of existing and new office parks in urban centers,” Biswas added. Meanwhile, Investor Relations Office (IRO) Executive Director Editha L. Martin said the favorable views of IHS on the Philippines would help in further improving international perception of the economy. “Although the Philippines now enjoys investment grade sovereign credit ratings from a wide list of international debt watchers, further building confidence on the economy is a never-ending task as we aim for sustainability of gains. The positive assessment of IHS on the Philippines is a welcome development,” Martin said. She cited the concrete benefits of favorable credit ratings, including lower interest rates on loans as well as business confidence that helps boost investments and job creation.

The digital growth of the Philippines and its promising future: From the fast evolving startup industry, the race to gathering big data, to the engaging social media phenomenon

We may not have the flying cars, fully functional hover boards, and a promising future that the “Back to the Future” movie series promised us for 2015, but we are not too far behind. Digital media strategist and producer Ej Villafranca reports that even with the current economy facing a number of setbacks due to the worsening traffic, pre-election drama, and airport shenanigans, there is a significant growth happening in our tech and digital industry to be excited about—at least for now.

34

BALIKBAYANMAGAZINE.COM

Although our country may be considered as one of the youngest in the tech community, many big players, including those from Singapore and the Silicon Valley, have eyed notable potential in the country’s startup industry, that they began investing. What’s unique in the local scene is the fact that a lot of these startups have a strong focus on social impact. They want to solve the relative challenges that the country faces, like public transportation issues, slow government actions, ineffective regulatory systems and other economic issues. This critical and problem-solving mindset motivates Filipinos to innovate and create solutions that catch the attention of big players in the international tech scene; which, in turn, may create a bigger social impact worldwide. The estimate on the local tech ecosystem is already above 10,000 people according to Founder Institute’s research. This ecosystem is not only composed of tech founders and investors, but tech people, corporate supporters, public servants, elected officials, journalists, students, academics, co-working spaces and many more. There are more than 10 different startup incubation companies and collaborative spaces already here in the Philippines, with the likes of Ideaspace, Impact Hub, A space, Collab, Kickstart, UP Enterprise Center for Technopreneurship, Ayala Technology Business Incubator (Ayala TBI), DOST-PEZA Open Technology Business Incubator, Cebu Business Incubator for I.T., Launchgarage, ManilaAngels, Founders Institute Manila, PSIA SPrInG.PH, and Hatchd to name a few.

One of the most promising startup programs that is emerging in the tech scene is the Founder Institute (FI). The Founder Institute is the world’s largest entrepreneur training and startup launch program, helping aspiring founders across the globe build enduring technology companies. In their four-month, part-time program, an entrepreneur can “learn by doing” and launch a company through structured training courses, practical business-building assignments, and expert feedback. Plus, participants are not required to quit their day jobs to participate. FI is present in more than 100 cities. To date, more than 1,500 startup companies around the world have finished the course. Jorge Azurin of the Founder Institute shared that with the growing startup scene, there would be a bigger number of local and foreign angel funders, as well as Venture Capitalist companies in the upcoming year. “A number of startups have already been acquired and merged. We expect Sen. Bam Aquino’s startup bill to take effect. And you will also see the government trying to catch up and offer all their resources as DOST [Department of Science and Technology] has already started with this, the same thing that they did for the BPO industry,” said Azurin. Considering that our economic dilemma serves as one of the main reasons that sparked the creative minds of these tech individuals as well as attracted the global tech scene, should it be something to be merely thankful for or something to reconsider?

BIG DATA GETTING BIGGER ON DEMAND Now we venture into the race on gathering consumer data, putting everything that users do online under surveillance so digital marketers may be able to create more predictive, targeted, and engaging campaigns. Gathering digital data means social media analytics, digital transactions with impressions, up to software-processing everything about your digital behavior and so much more. This is very crucial, given that the Philippines is the top country in the world with the time most spent in the Internet, with a daily average of 6.3 hours on laptops and desktops and an average of 3.3 hours on mobile according to data of wearesocial.sg, an international media agency that does social and digital monitoring for their global campaigns. However, it was not determined whether it’s because it takes our Internet connection 10 times longer than our neighboring countries, or we are just simply that digitally present all the time. Eric Alberto, PLDT executive vice president, explained that the global wallet for data is expected to grow to about $230 billion over the next five years from its current level of $150 billion as big companies find the relevance for information, the more likely the need would increase. Alberto, who is also president of ePLDT, said the big data solutions would allow enterprises to analyze openly available data and gain insights that drive predictive and data-driven decision-making in their businesses. “Big data drives our everyday lives. Every action generates data, which become valuable insights that empower enterprises, organizations, government agencies, and even small and medium enterprises to develop more effective products, services, and programs for their target markets,” Alberto said. This 2016, we are expecting less of gut-feel approach and more of data driven decisions. Along with this are decision makers that are willing to apply analytics derived insights to key business operations. Intuitive decision-making will diminish somewhat as companies infuse analytics into everything that employees touch. This is something that could already be seen in the growing BPO industry.

36

BALIKBAYANMAGAZINE.COM

By now, most people have one way or another heard of the “Aldub” phenomenon that has taken the social media platform by storm. Why has this created such a huge impact to our advertising and media community? “We’re moving towards the direction where both [social and mainstream media] have no choice but to coexist,” said by Boy Abunda, a Filipino television host, publicist, talent manager and celebrity endorser. This is a trend that a lot of advertising and media agencies are banking on. As everyone pursues to create 360 degree campaigns, the “Aldub” phenomenon creates a case study on social and real-time engagement. It serves as a good example to “traditionalist” clients that try to veer away from digital engagement and lack understanding of the positive impact it could bring to their business. It revolved around engagement that has an emergence of cultural values, local behavior and the appeal of characters most audiences could relate to and not be forced upon. There is more to debunk on the matter from the perspective of analysts regarding the phenomenon than just a simple giddiness over the popular “pabebe wave”.

NOT TOO FAR BEHIND The digital and tech industry is definitely growing in the local scene. It is very promising as everyone is leaning toward data and engagement. A startup scene that is devoted to digital media, solving economic problems, big data analysis to provide better solutions, as well as an ever growing landscape that merges different platforms that effectively communicate and interact with the local community can only result in growth and in opportunities. It is safe to say we can now begin to expect more tech innovations and more global projects in collaboration with other countries. More investments on data gathering and better digital campaigns that is more interactive and engaging are on the way. We can hope that with all these, somebody would manage to get Manila’s traffic situation out of the way.

W HERE TO INVEST YOUR MONEY IN 2016

WRITER Maria Nimfa Nadtja H. Villaver ILLUSTRATOR Allana Santos

If there’s one thing people are usually looking forward to, it’s the year-end. With upcoming annual bonuses and cash gifts, it’s always tempting to spend rather than save. But it would still be best to resist the urge to squander your hard-earned money, especially that the coming year 2016 has a lot to offer.

Mutual Fund and Unit Investment Trust Fund

Stock Market

or those who are not the adventurous type of investor, mutual funds and unit invest trust fund (UTIF) are savvy options. Mutual funds are a type of investment wherein you join other investors to form a massive fund that will be invested in various securities depending on the investment objective of the fund. The pool of funds is handled by an expert called fund manager. The mutual fund company issues the investor a certain number of shares based on your amount of investment. count to the time you close the account or redeem your money. The higher the investment and the longer it is invested, the higher the return or profit. (See Image 01) On the other hand, UITF is sold by banks. You purchase units of participation in the fund, whose value is called the Net Asset Value per Unit (NAVPU). This reflects the current market prices of the instruments that make up the UITF. The NAVPU rises or falls depending on the movement of market prices. Since UITFs are sold and managed by commercial banks, these are supervised by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.2 (See Image 02)

GETTING STARTED: An investor needs at least a minimum investment amount of Php 5,000.00 to open a trading account. In order to buy stocks, you need to register an account with licensed stockbrokers in order to purchase securities. Afterwards, the investor can choose which stocks to buy or sell. Due diligence, extensive research, and discipline are highly critical because of the market volatility, and greater risk than other investments such as real estate.

side from putting up a business, buying stocks is one of the most common investments with high potential earnings. Stocks are shares of ownerships in a corporation. When you purchase stocks of a publicly listed company, you become a stockholder or shareholder of that company. Being a shareholder automatically means becoming a part-owner of the company. The bigger the stock, the more you can participate in the company’s growth and future profits. Earnings predominantly depend on the company’s performance, as well as the trends of the stock market. According to the Trading Economics global macro models and analysts’ expectations, the Philippines Stock Market (PSEi) is expected to trade at 6920.00 index points by the end of the 4th quarter. Within the next 12 months, the stock market is estimated to trade at 6350.00. In the long-term, PSEi is projected to trend around 7760.00 in 2020, 10600.00 in 2030, and 14100.00 Index points in 2050, according to econometric models. “The PSEi outlook will be fundamentally good because of the upcoming elections and higher GDP growth rate,” Financial Adviser and Financeph.com President Mark Fernandez told Balikbayan Magazine. According to the PSEi, there are over 100 licensed stockbrokers. They can either be traditional (orders placed via phone call) or digitally, online. Among the list of online stockbrokers accredited by the Philippine Stock Exchange are: AB Capital Securities Inc., Abacus Securities Corp., Accord Capital Equities Corp., Angping & Associates Securities Inc., BPI Securities Corp., COL Financial Group Inc., Yap Securities Inc., First Metro Securities Brokerage Corporation, RCBC Securities Inc. and Wealth Securities, Inc.

Real Estate

T

he year 2015 has been “a great time for PH property market” according to the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA). And for the upcoming year, the real estate industry will continue to further grow. One good real estate investment is buying a condo then renting it out or investing in condotels. The advent of “condotels” has redefined not just the concept of condominiums but also of investment. Condotel is a condominium project, which is operated as a hotel offering short-term rentals complete with a registration desk, cleaning service and more amenities. The units are individually owned and automatically leased back to the developer, where it is then rented out like any other hotel room. Unlike condominiums, condotel owners don’t need to pay monthly maintenance & condominium dues, maintenance fees and real property taxes. Based on a study made by global property portal Lamudi Philippines, the average price of condominiums in Las Piñas (Php64,276 per sqm) and & Muntinlupa (Php60,804 per sqm) are cheaper compared to condominiums in Manila, Mandaluyong, San Juan, and Pasig (Php95,134, Php88,174, Php87,294, and Php80,329 per sqm, respectively). Office real estate will also become a

viable investment option due to strong demand and low supply. Property developers are already offering stratatitled office developments to address increasing demand for office real estate. According to Jacqueline van den Ende, Founder and Managing Director of Lamudi Philippines, development will spread outside Metro-Manila. As early as 2014, real estate development in second-tier cities such as Cebu, Bacolod, Iloilo, Davao, and even cities in Luzon near Metro Manila like Angeles, Santa Rosa, Dasmariñas, and Bacoor have begun. By 2016, one of the real estate

investment options to consider is Montemaria, the newest development strategically located at the southernmost tip of Batangas Bay in Batangas City. Aside from the pilgrimage center, which boasts the 88-meter tall centerpiece of Mother of All Asia, the development will also have two residential subdivisions; a 35-hectare commercial business district; a 17-hectare hotel, resort and tourism district; and an institutional zone with an aggregate area of 5 hectares devoted entirely for religious and spiritual activities.

Precious Metals

I

nvesting in these precious metals can be considered as a solid investment because it has retained intrinsic value regardless of economic conditions. Contrary to other investments, this kind of investment is a physical commodity because the investor actually owns a piece of precious metal. It’s also a limited commodity. The Philippines has an estimated US$ 1.4 trillion in mineral reserves, especially gold, copper, nickel, aluminum, and chromite. Moreover, according to Forbes, “buying metals represents a safe-haven approach to diversification and a partial hedge against equities.” Investing in metals keeps an investor’s portfolio balanced. This can be manifested when the value of the Dollar decreases, at least part of one’s portfolio will retain its value, despite the deflation.

GETTING STARTED You must first identify what type of investor you are—conservative, moderate, or aggressive. Then decided what type of mutual fund or UTIF best suits your preference. Similar to the stock market, a minimum investment amount of Php 5,000.00 (for mutual funds) to Php 10,000 (for UTIF) is required to open an account.

Government Bonds

GETTING STARTED Before investing in commodities, one must understand both the basics of commodities markets, as well as the risks. Commodities are traded in the commodity exchanges through spot, futures and options contracts. Also, another significant aspect to look at is the relevant commodity prices and what this might mean for one’s investments.

TREASURY NOTES TERM: 2, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 25 years COUPON PAYMENT PERIOD: Fixed-rate coupon paid semiannually.

RETAIL TREASURY BONDS

Commodities nother way for investors to diversify beyond traditional stocks and bonds is through commodities. Commodities are raw materials used in the production of goods or services being provided to consumers. It is considered a hedge against inflation because prices generally rise with inflation. Commodities include agricultural products, metals, and energy products. However, commodities are also very volatile. Prices can also drop when there’s sudden shortage due to natural or man-made calamities.

he Philippine Bond Market is dominated by government issue, with comparatively high interest rates and a steep domestic yield curve. On many occasions, the Philippine National Government or its agencies issue debt securities to finance deficits and development projects. Selling to the buying public originates from the Bureau of Treasury (BTr) through a network of licensed dealers. Government securities (GS) are no longer certificated, they are known as “scriptless”. GS discount and coupons are subject to 20% final income tax, which is withheld upon floatation of Treasury Bills, or upon payment of the coupon for Treasury Bonds. No other tax is imposed on the secondary market buyer.4 Government bonds are the safest and are relatively “risk-free” because it’s fully backed by the government but it does not mean they are immune from

credit/default risk, credit spread risk, or downgrade risk.. The investment is liquid because it can be traded in the secondary market prior to maturity. There are four kinds of government bonds: Treasury Bills (T-bills), Treasury Notes or Fixed Rate Treasury Notes (FXTNs), Retail Treasury Bonds (RTBs), and Dollar Linked Peso Notes (DLPN).

GETTING STARTED Government bonds can either be purchased via auction or through secondary market. Investors can purchase through Government Securities Eligible Dealers (GSEDs). Among the four kinds of government bonds, RTBs are the most affordable with a minimum investment of Php 5,000.00.

Travel & Tourism

Education

The Philippine tourism industry continues to boom with a growing number of domestic and foreign visitors on uptrend. According to the Department of Tourism (DOT) industry performance report for travel and tourism, inbound receipts for August 2015 grew by 21.58%, accumulating to Php 21.97 billion (US$ 476.15 million) total revenue. Inbound visitors from January to August amounted to Php152.19 billion (US$ 3.39 billion). While the biggest visitor receipts were recorded in January 2015 with Php 22.48 billion, July and August posted double digit gains compared with other months, demonstrating high seasonality for these period during the year. The DOT has also set a tourism revenue target of between $6 billion and $8 billion by 2016 under its National Tourism Development Plan (NTDP), which aims to attract more international tourists to visit and spend while in the country. Having this optimistic progress in the tourism industry, you can consider investing in a travel & tourism business, especially for Balikbayans, since this type of business requires minimal startup capital. “If you can find people at home to trust to become tour guides, that synergy can work so well, especially since you are working overseas. You are in a unique position to know what tourists are looking for. You understand global quality standards but you also know what quaint little customs and images make good experiences for tourists,” Salve Duplito, an award-winning print and broadcast financial journalist trained in financial planning, shared on the show “On The Money.”

“The best use of life is to spend it for something that outlasts life.” - William James The best investment is to invest in humanity through supporting quality education. People have heard it a million times. Education is the key to the future. Scholarships not only reduce the financial burden of underprivileged youth and their families but also contribute to the prosperity and wellbeing of individuals and communities.

Agriculture

GETTING STARTED There are a number of options to choose from should one decide to invest in the education for the underprivileged. It can either be through school scholarships or scholarship programs prearranged by nongovernment organizations. Or the simplest way can be someone from one’s community who needs educational assistance.

Yourself

Investment opportunities are not just limited to finance, trade, and services sector. Being an agricultural country, investing in agriculture offers significant opportunities for investors. As investment consultant Daniel Go said in a daily newspaper, the agriculture sector best represents the consumer staples industry, a particular asset class that prospers even during hard economic conditions. Investors can choose from the major agricultural products for a higher yield. The Philippines is the 8th largest rice producer in the world, accounting for 2.8% of global rice production. The country is also the largest producer of coconut which plays an important role in the economy. Moreover, the demand for food and other agricultural products will continue to grow.

Investing in one’s self may be the most profitable investment a person will ever make. It yields not only future returns but also a current pay-off as well. Warren Buffet, the most successful investor considered in the 20thcentury, advised people to invest as much as possible in something that everyone has access to because it is their biggest asset by far. Mplify Managing Director emphasized the importance of career advancement at his talk during the Pinoy Entrepreneurs Summit and noted to “Never settle for what skills you have.”

GETTING STARTED Farming is a risky business. Aside from the typical factors to consider when starting a business, there are other uncontrollable factors to consider like the weather, type of soil and many more. For those planning to invest in an agribusiness, study the location first and do a market research. Basic knowledge in the chosen agribusiness sector is also a must when you invest in agriculture.

GETTING STARTED Investment in one’s self can start with education advancement. This can include going back to school and earning a Master’s / Doctorate degree or it can be as simple as attending trainings that will enhance your skills. Most importantly, a person must nurture his mind and take care of his health for him to fulfill his goals in life.

High-yield Savings account

GETTING STARTED You must decide first which tourism sector the business will focus on. Options include: travel agencies, transportation services, accommodations, guided tours, health and beauty clinics, and tour guides and hospitality business (food or beverage establishments).

56

BALIKBAYANMAGAZINE.COM

For people who are skeptical in taking risk because of the unpredictable stock market and bonds, the traditional approach of saving one’s money can be a good investment as well. Some banks offer high-yield savings, a combination of savings account and time deposit account. The initial deposit, maintaining balance, as well as the interest rate is higher than savings accounts but lower than time deposits. One can withdraw his money anytime but only within the allowed number of withdrawals per month to earn an interest. GETTING STARTED One must choose carefully the bank which offers the highest interest rate and study the required number of withdrawals per month to align with his spending.

Franchising

Some people are hesitant to start their own business but would like to have one. Franchising is the best investment option to consider. As the popular adage in the franchising industry says “owning a franchise allows you to go into business for yourself, but not by yourself.” Aside from being a boss of

58

one’s business, investing in a franchise business offers many advantages. A franchise business has a higher chance of success because it’s already an established product or service plus a tested business model. Moreover, a franchisor supports his franchisee from the opening until running the business.

Before buying a franchise, one must make a list of franchise concepts he would like to consider. The list is based on one’s budget, interest and inclination. Upon deciding the franchise concept, the investor must ask the franchisors the following: (a) franchisor’s support program; (b) total investment package (the franchise fee is just part of the total cost of the franchise); (c) return of investment; (d) number of outlets – both company-owned and franchised – and where these are located.

10 NEW YEAR’S

Resolution

Ideas for 2016 WRITER Maria Nimfa Nadtja H. Villaver ILLUSTRATOR Allana Santos

I

t’s the start of a new year, which means most people make plans to change their life for the better over the forthcoming twelve months. The tradition of making New Year’s resolutions can be traced back to the ancient Romans, who began each year by making promises to lead a better life to Janus, the God after whom January was named. The same ritual also goes with the Babylonians who would vow to their gods at the turn of the year to pay back their debts. Since then, the act of self-improvement carried across different cultures and religions. Here are common New Year’s resolution ideas Balikbayan Magazine rounded up from various surveys and polls. Yes, most of them are not new, but these resolutions when made right can make a huge difference in one’s life.

he harsh reality is that New Year’s Resolutions are hard to keep. According to psychologist, Christian counselor & relational life coach Lillian “Ali” Gui, the main reason people break these plans is because they relentlessly questioned themselves about how to achieve their goals instead of choosing one path and stubbornly sticking to it. Gui shares with Balikbayan Magazine five tips on how a person can achieve his New Year’s resolutions. 01 PICK WELL. Take some time to think

about what you’re really passionate about or what you most want to improve about your life in the coming year. Studies show you are much less likely to abandon a resolution that will really change your life for the better. MAKE A PLAN. Once you have decided on a goal, think imaginatively about how to achieve it. If your resolution is to spend more time with your family, why not involve everyone? Come up with shared interests and actually schedule times for those activities. Also have a plan for how you to deal with inevitable setbacks and self-criticism that will crop up along the way.

for how to achieve a goal so figure out what will work best for you and tailor your resolution (and your approach to it) accordingly. If you’re a big picture person, you may have a better chance of keeping a more sweeping resolution such as “I’m going to have more adventure in my life.” If you are a process-oriented person, choose a resolution with measurable

benchmarks such as “I want to be more fit so I’ll lose a pound a week.” If you respond well to incentives, set incremental goals that when reached will trigger a reward for you such as “for each PHP 200 pesos of debt I repay, I’m going to do something special for myself.” If you have trouble with follow through, use Post-it note reminders, keep a journal or use an app to help remind you of your goal. 04 PAY ATTENTION: ASSESS AND REASSESS YOUR PROGRESS. Tweak

the way you talk to yourself about your resolution. If you lose enthusiasm, spend some time trying to figure out why and what may get you back on the right track. And don’t be afraid to confide in your friends and family— they might have ideas you haven’t thought of. MAKE IT FUN. No one likes to be tormented to do things even if it is you tormenting yourself. Using an angry internal voice is the best way to insure that you will end up resenting your resolution. Your relationship to a resolution should be more like creative play than digging grave.

RejuveClear Laser Stretch marks may be bothersome for some, as women are prone to this skin condition. There is no proven cream or topical medication that can “erase” them, as much as their labels may claim to do so, and this is where RejuveClear Laser comes in. One of the latest skin care technology that Luminisce is proud to have is South Korea’s famous BB Cream Laser. South Korea is one of the fastest growing countries when it comes to skin innovation, and their emphasis in skin care is evidenced by over 2000 brands in the market. Essences, ampoules, face masks, emulsions, and mists are just some products that are part of each Korean’s beauty regimen, and its effect is pristine, bright, and radiant skin. The BB Cream Laser, called Baby Skin Laser at Luminisce, aims to achieve that result: smooth and baby-soft skin that Korean’s are well-known to have. This machine works by creating small channels into the epidermis, or the skin’s outer layer, to let the product absorb into the deeper layers of the skin for better results. “Sometimes, the products we use do not respond well on the skin because of the skin’s texture or condition. The product then goes to waste because the results cannot be seen.” The Baby Skin Laser promises to improve product absorption through this procedure that only takes less than 10 minutes and requires no anesthesia. As the laser creates these invisible channels, it also injects special ingredients into the skin that promises to improve the skin from within. The equipment also prepares the ingredient that is transferred into your skin, and this ampoule or ingredients inside special glass vials can be used for two weeks to maintain its effect. Different ampoules are available for various skin needs: • VC OR ASCORBIC ACID ampoule rejuvenates the skin by boosting collagen production and helps in scar healing • VA OR RETINOL ampoule contains Vitamin A that works at the cellular level to improve aging skin

• • •

TA OR TRANEXAMIC ACID ampoule brightens and whitens the skin, also helping those with melasma SC OR STEM CELL conditioned Media restores the skin from the inside, thereby improving skin health CK OR STEM CELL conditioned Media +KGF ampoule encourages hair regrowth RS OR RESVERATROL ampoule contains the potent anti-aging ingredient Resveratrol that restores and protects the skin from sun damage

This non-invasive procedure is fast, has no downtime, and delivers results gradually and effectively. Patients have even noticed the difference in as fast as a few days! This laser may be used for ALL skin types, making the Baby Skin Laser the beauty treatment to look out for. These laser treatments above are only a few of what Luminisce can offer. Aside from skin programs, it also offers hair removal and regrowth, and weight and wellness treatments, to name a few. Of course, Dr. Kaycee believes that healthy skin cannot be achieved overnight. “Like diet and exercise, skin care requires being regular and constant to keep it healthy and beautiful, and this is what we call SKINvesting.” Her top clients, including model Maggie Wilson, TV anchor Ces Drilon, TV personality Patty Laurel, actress and teen star Sophia Andres, and Atty. Karen Moreno all believe in this philosophy too. Taking care of your skin today might not make much of a difference tomorrow, but in the long term, you will thank yourself for it. CAMIGUIN

T

he first thing you need to know is that Camiguin is an island of volcanic origin located 120 kilometers southeast of Cebu and 90 kilometers north of Cagayan de Oro. This pear shaped, volcanic island houses more volcanoes than its actual towns, with Mount Hibok Hibok as the only active volcano that is expected to erupt every fifty to sixty years—its last recorded activity was back in 1950. During lent, devotees would walk around the island and trek up to the old volcanoes in observance of the Panaad festival which is similar to a traditional Walk of Penitence done by Catholics reliving the way of the cross. Second, that as Northern Mindanao’s leading tourist destination, Camiguin is a sell short of natural beauty; from springs to sandbars, everything about this island is nothing short of inspiring.

Where the water never runs dry

One interesting fact about Camiguin is that the water resource comes from several natural springs scattered across the island. Faucets are never closed to keep the pipes from bursting with overflowing water. You will be surprised that your tap water tastes almost like San Pellegrino, minus the carbonated fizz. Exploring the island, you will find a number of hot and cold springs like the Sto. Niño Cold Spring Resort in Catarman that is popular among the locals for its perennial crystal clear, cool waters; the Ardent Hot Springs Resort in Mambajao that also offers a quaint lodging options for anyone who wishes to stay overnight; and the Bura Soda Water Swimming Pool in Catarman that is best known for its medicinal purposes. The iconic sunken cemetery in Catarman is a historical site as well as a tourist attraction.

Of heritage sites and historical ruins

Flooded down below sea level during the volcanic birth of Mt. Vulcan in 1871-1875, the gravesite was commemorated by a huge cross erected in 1982. Diving beneath the massive, white cross, you will marvel over the eerie sight of coral laden epitaphs and tombstones. Its neighbor church, the Old Catarman Church, or the Gui-Ob church, still stands with only a few of its surviving ruins and bell tower saved from the mentioned volcanic eruption. Masses are still celebrated in the open passage of the old church.

Sandbars, white sand, and lofty falls

You will be greeted by a number of friendly vendors selling kiping when you reach Katibawasan Falls. This addictive treat is a local delicacy made from grounded sweet potato rolled into thin disks and fried over regular cooking oil. Drizzled

t r ivia

with caramelized coconut milk, this snack is popular among locals and tourists to munch on as you trek along your destination. Light, sweet, and cheap, kipings are as distinctive as lanzoses are to Camiguin. Katibawasan and Tuasan falls are Camiguin’s most celebrated natural wonders. Cascading a few hundred feet from the ground, these falls are not your typical commercialized tourists spots. Natural and extremely breathtaking, both these falls offer a simpler, yet inspiring way to enjoy nature. The Mantigue Island lies near the port area of Camiguin. With a fine, white sand and clear blue waters, this island is one of the best-kept gems of the province. Still subtly popular, there are only a few private and local lodgings in the island. Unlike the White Island sandbar that is smaller in scale, Mantigue offers a more convenient stay for an overnight trip.

Old documents show that the great Spanish explorers Ferdinand Magellan and Miguel Lopez de Legaspi landed on the island of Camiguin between 1521-1565.

Camiguin took its name from the local kamagong which is a tree from the ebony family found abundant in the island during its discovery by the Spaniards (the Spaniards made a habit of naming places based on its recall or anything that is best associated with the land).

There are no malls, supermarkets, or any popular fast food chain in the island.

Camiguin is one of the safest provinces in Northern Mindanao with a zero crime rate record.

A kilo of lanzones in Camiguin costs Php10.00 (depending on your haggling skill).

TRAVEL | Amazing Escapes ( 04 )

N

o need to book a flight to reach a destination like this. Just three to four hours from Metro Manila, Anawangin Cove offers a weekend escapade for all types of nature lovers – beach-goers, hikers, or adventurers. Located in San Antonio, Zambales, this crescent-shaped cove is the most accessible from the village of Pundaquit, the jumpoff point to the ashen beaches of the town.

Going to the island

It usually takes a 3-hour land travel from Manila going to San Antonio. For those taking the public transportation, the easiest route will be taking the bus bound to Iba and get off at San Antonio Public Market. But since buses going to Iba are limited, travelers can ride the bus going to Olongapo City, and then board another bus to San Antonio. From San Antonio town proper, tricycles are available throughout the day to take travelers to the village of Pundaquit. Don’t worry; the village is just 10-15 minutes away from the town proper. From the village of Pundaquit, Anawangin Cove is accessible by boat or by foot. If you can’t wait to go to the pristine beach, take the 30-minute boat ride to reach the island faster. As you navigate from Pundaquit’s coastline, relish the clear blue waters and the view of striking mountains that shortly end in massive sea cliffs. But if you’re the adventure-type of traveler, trekking is a good option. You could hike over Mt. Pundaquit going to the cove, which usually lasts 4-5 hours.

The Beauty after a Fiasco

The moment you set foot on this pristine paradise, be smitten with the powdery white sand beach and tall evergreen trees rising from the shoreline that spreads out into the forest. But be more amazed with the story of how this unspoiled beauty surfaced. Some people said that the coastline of San Antonio used to be rocky. However, after the cataclysmic eruption of Mt. Pinatubo way back in 1991, the nearby islands were dumped with volcanic ashes making it completely unrecognizable. Years later, the lands that were covered by Mt. Pinatubo’s ash fall became extremely fertile. Perhaps, this could be the reason how the Agoho trees started to grow, creating an evergreen forest of what seems like pine trees. Undeniably, Anawangin can be called “a phoenix reborn from the ashes.”

The Perfect Bliss

Aside from appreciating the beauty of nature, you can get complete tranquility on the cove with a twist of adventure. There’s no mobile phone signal in the entire cove, giving you a perfect time to relax and forget the demanding life back in the Metro. The crystal clear waters will definitely entice you to dip in the water the entire day. But the Anawangin cove has more to offer. Behind the pine trees sprawls a river that contributes to the stillness of the place. You can also trek the hill that will give a magnificent view of the entire cove.

Camping is the main game in Anawangin. But the experience of beach camping is perhaps what attracts travelers. If you don’t have your own tent, there are available tents for rent within the camp sites. Cap off your weekend adventure by chilling on the shore, gazing at the stars and feeling the cool sea breeze. If you still have enough time, you can also try island hopping in Camara Island and Capones Island. And if you’ve fallen in love with Anawangin Cove, you’ll surely love the other nearby coves.

TIPS

03

1

2

To enjoy island hopping, schedule it before going to Anawangin Cove. Most islands are rocky and surrounded by coral reefs, boats can get near the islands especially when there are huge waves. So travelers are recommended to get down from the boat and swim/walk going to the island.

There’s a river behind the camping sites where you can experience the traditional river bathe – which you won’t experience in the Metro nowadays.

3

4

If you plan to cook/grill, bring charcoal and gas because there’s no available cooking equipment in the island.

Bring enough food and drinking water. There’s a small sari-sari store in the island but items are a bit pricy.

5 That’s why, be sure to have an extra budget with you!

What to pack: • • • • • • •

beach wear sunblock wide brim-hat & sunglasses insect repellent sleeping bag (for additional comfort) flashlights (no electricity in the cove) first aid kit / medicines

• •

camera with enough battery & memory cards waterproof pouch and bag to store valuables and plastic bags to protect gadgets from water splash during the boat ride comfortable shoes (for trekking) food and drinking water
