40 Years of Making It Happen: How Airspeed Built Business, Impacted Lives, and Empowered Communities

For forty years, Airspeed has done far more than a freight forwarder across islands and continents. It has moved dreams, opened doors, empowered women, enabled small businesses, and helped shape a more connected and inclusive Philippines.

From a small, six-person team in 1985 to becoming one of the country’s most trusted, homegrown logistics and freightforwarding companies, Airspeed’s journey is defined not just by business milestones but also by the lives it has touched along the way.

At the core of this story is Rosemarie P. Rafael, the visionary woman who built Airspeed from the ground up, long before the term “women in leadership” became common in corporate boardrooms. Her leadership has guided the company not only toward growth, but also toward purpose.

A WOMAN’S VISION TAKES FLIGHT

When Rosemarie Rafael founded Airspeed at 28, she entered a logistics industry dominated by men and largely controlled by foreign companies. But where others saw obstacles, she saw a chance: to build a Filipino logistics firm that offers topnotch service, excellence, and dedication. Her journey began with grit. Airspeed’s first deliveries were done with a single van, and packages were weighed at the airport due to the lack of a scale. But instead of discouraging her, these difficulties shaped her leadership philosophy: Start where you are. Use what you have. Grow with courage and integrity.

Today, Airspeed is a key pillar of Philippine logistics—with warehouses, hubs, and services supporting both domestic and international growth. But still, Rosemarie stays true to her purpose. “You don’t just build a company. You build people. And people, in turn, can build the nation.”

BUILDING BUSINESS: CREATING OPPORTUNITIES ACROSS INDUSTRIES

As the Philippines evolved -- economically, digitally, and socially, Airspeed evolved with it. What started with air-freight forwarding has expanded into a full suite of logistics and supply-chain solutions such as International & Domestic Multimodal Freight Forwarding, Customs Clearance & Brokerage, Storage Solutions, Specialized Logistics, and E-commerce Fulfillment.

Through these capabilities, Airspeed has supported enterprises of all sizes -from multinational corporations to homebased entrepreneurs navigating the growing digital marketplace. Its services enable businesses to scale faster, deliver better results, and compete globally. But the company’s growth has always been connected to a deeper mission: lifting people and communities along with it.

IMPACTING LIVES: A LOGISTICS COMPANY WITH A HEART

Airspeed’s impact extends far beyond business metrics. Over the years, it has become a catalyst for change. Airspeed’s expansion has generated employment for thousands of Filipinos -- from warehouse

teams and riders to managers and specialists. Many long-time employees have grown their careers within the company, reflecting Rosemarie’s focus on developing talent and promoting from within.

Airspeed partners with local communities to create opportunities—whether through livelihood programs, training, or collaborations with grassroots enterprises.

As e-commerce becomes central to the livelihoods of millions, Airspeed has helped bridge logistical gaps that once limited growth. Solutions such as www.kh-ph. com and Pinaspeed support online sellers, MSMEs, and digital entrepreneurs across the archipelago.

EMPOWERING WOMEN: A WEPS SIGNATORY LEADING BY EXAMPLE

Airspeed is a proud signatory of the UN Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs), a global commitment to promoting gender equality in the workplace, marketplace, and community. This commitment is not symbolic; it is lived every day.

A significant portion of Airspeed’s senior management and decision-making teams are women, a notable feature in an industry traditionally led by men. The company also encourages mentorship, professional growth, and advancement based on merit. Its policies and programs prioritize safety, well-being, and respect for all employees. Most importantly, Rosemarie Rafael actively supports women’s organizations, ensuring that Airspeed’s influence benefits not only its employees but also communities across the country. She is the current Chairperson of Women’s Business Council Philippines, and a Commissioner for Labor of the Philippine Commission on Women. In this way, Airspeed is more than just a logistics company; it is a champion of women’s economic empowerment.

SUPPORTING SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTREPRENEURS: MAKING SUCCESS ACCESSIBLE AND POSSIBLE

A milestone program that demonstrates Airspeed’s commitment to inclusive growth is the SME Program, which includes Pinaspeed, an online booking platform, and KH-PH.com, an e-commerce marketplace designed to help SMEs reach customers more easily.

Through these programs, Airspeed provides affordable e-commerce solutions, integrated logistics and fulfillment, access to new markets, visibility for local brands, and seamless seller support.

The platforms are beneficial to artisans, regional entrepreneurs, home-based sellers, and small manufacturers who often struggle to compete with bigger players. By providing SMEs with a digital platform backed by reliable logistics, Airspeed helps them scale sustainably.

This initiative reflects the company’s belief that every Filipino entrepreneur deserves the chance to grow, regardless of size, location, or background.

40 YEARS ON: A LEGACY OF SERVICE, A FUTURE OF PURPOSE

As Airspeed marks its 40th year, the company stands at a powerful crossroads of experience and innovation. Its success is rooted not only in operational excellence but also in core values – Forwarding logistics excellence, Living with Integrity, Collaborative Success, and Culture of Malasakit.

The next chapter is clear. The Airspeed Team will continue to focus on what matters—businesses, people, and communities. The team will surely empower more women, uplift more entrepreneurs, and strengthen the nation’s supply chain, continuing to prove that a Filipino, womanled company can rise, endure, and lead for generations.

With Airspeed’s unwavering purpose and Chairperson Rosemarie Rafael’s visionary leadership, the journey ahead promises to create even greater impact -- one shipment, one business, one empowered life at a time.

Good Vibes Only: The Superstitious Spark of Filipino New Year Traditions

In the Philippines, the New Year does not simply arrive. It is welcomed, encouraged, and sometimes even coaxed into bringing good fortune. At midnight, the air fills with fireworks, laughter, pots clanging, coins jingling, and families gathered around tables glowing with food and meaning. What outsiders may call superstition is, in truth, a cultural love letter to hope. Filipinos celebrate the New Year with the belief that joy is not just something that happens. It is something we actively invite.

WHERE ALL THE BELIEFS COME FROM

Filipino New Year customs did not come from one place. They are layered, like a table full of dishes from different provinces. Long before Spanish colonization, early Filipinos practiced

rituals for cleansing and renewal at turning points in the year. Centuries later, Chinese traders introduced symbols of prosperity, including round fruits and lucky colors. Spanish influence then structured the holiday calendar around Christian observance. What we have now is a celebration where prayers, folk beliefs, and family tradition all blend seamlessly.

So when Filipinos make noise to ward off bad spirits, or when we arrange twelve fruits for twelve lucky months, we are not simply repeating habits. We are expressing a worldview where the future can be shaped through intention, humor, and heart.

WHY THE NOISE MATTERS

The Filipino New Year is famously loud. Fireworks crackle. Car horns blare. Children

scream with delight. Families clang spoons against metal cookware. The noise is believed to scare away misfortune and make room for vitality. In a cultural sense, noise symbolizes life. To welcome the new year quietly would feel like letting it slip past without confidence. The sound says, very simply: we are here, we are together, and we are ready.

DRESS FOR THE LIFE YOU WANT

Clothing also carries meaning. Polka dots are worn because round shapes represent coins. Red is favored because it suggests energy, luck, and cheer. Some people wear something new to encourage a fresh start. Whether or not one believes these symbols literally, the act of dressing with care signals that the new year is special and full of possibility.

THE MAGIC OF THE MIDNIGHT TABLE

Media Noche, the feast at the stroke of twelve, is filled with symbolism. Round fruits invite abundance. Pancit suggests long life. Lechon or roasted meats symbolize celebration and victory. Sticky rice encourages families to stick together through difficulties. The table becomes a vision of the coming year: full, warm, shared, and hopeful.

JOY THAT TRAVELS ACROSS OCEANS

Even far from home, overseas Filipinos recreate these traditions in dormitories, apartments, staff housing, and shared kitchens. The dishes may be substituted and fireworks may be replaced by video calls, but the intention remains the same. These rituals allow Filipinos to carry home within themselves.

Filipino New Year traditions continue not because everyone takes them literally, but because they feel good. They turn hope into something you can hear, taste, and share. They remind us that happiness multiplies when celebrated together.

Easy Ways to Brush Up on Your History IQ

History isn’t just about remembering dates from school. It’s the story of how we learned to survive, celebrate, resist, rebuild, joke in the face of hardship, and love our country and each other in our own Filipino way. Knowing our history helps explain why we are the way we are today. It gives us perspective on current issues and a stronger sense of identity, especially for those who feel far from home or were raised outside the Philippines. Whether you grew up in Manila, Mindanao, or miles away in California or Dubai, learning about our past is a way of staying connected to something bigger than yourself.

Yet for many of us, history was something memorized for exams and then forgotten. Others grew up outside the Philippines and never learned it at all. The good news is that it’s never too late to reconnect. Our history isn’t locked inside textbooks. It lives in families, neighborhoods, songs, food, and stories that continue to echo across generations.

START

WITH WHAT’S ACCESSIBLE

If you’re in the Philippines, local and university libraries are full of materials that tell our story in voices that are often overlooked: old newspapers, regional histories, letters, and memoirs. The National Library of the Philippines and cultural institutions maintain collections that show how everyday Filipinos lived and thought.

If you’re abroad, many of these resources are available digitally. The National Library’s online platforms and open-access university archives let you explore from anywhere. These aren’t just “facts”; they reveal emotions, debates, hopes, and fears. They make history feel lived-in, not

distant.

BE THOUGHTFUL ABOUT WHAT YOU READ

The internet makes learning convenient, but it also spreads misinformation quickly. It helps to check where a story comes from, reliable sources like historians, museums, and heritage organizations offer context instead of just catchy claims. Watching lectures or interviews with Filipino historians can be surprisingly engaging and can deepen understanding without feeling academic.

LEARN

FROM FAMILY

Some of the richest history comes from the people we already know. Sit with a grandparent, aunt, or family friend and ask about their childhood, hometown traditions, or memories of national events. These stories are more than anecdotes; they are primary sources. Recording them preserves family heritage and adds emotional depth to the wider national story.

LIVE IT, DON’T JUST STUDY IT

History is easier to absorb when it’s experienced. Old Filipino films, OPM classics, regional dishes, and local festivals all carry echoes of the past. Cooking a family recipe or attending a cultural celebration can teach you as much about heritage as any textbook.

KEEPING

HISTORY ALIVE

History remains alive when we talk about it, pass it on, and recognize its presence in everyday life. Relearning our past doesn’t require expertise, just curiosity and openness. Wherever you are, reconnecting with our history strengthens identity and keeps our shared stories alive for the next generation.

The Feast of Two Midnights: Noche Buena and Media Noche in Filipino Life

In the Philippines, time itself seems to change in December. Work days feel softer around the edges, city streets glow in warm lantern light, and homes fill with preparations that begin long before any clock strikes twelve. At the heart of this season are two midnight gatherings: Noche Buena on Christmas Eve and Media Noche on New Year’s Eve. These celebrations are familiar to anyone who has grown up Filipino, yet their meaning runs deeper than simple festivity. Each feast reflects centuries of cultural merging, emotional memory, and communal identity that continue to shape Filipino life today.

ROOTS IN FAITH AND ADAPTATION

Noche Buena came to the Philippines through Spanish Catholic tradition. The practice of attending the midnight Mass to welcome the birth of Christ was accompanied by a shared meal afterward, which in Spain was often modest and quiet. When this tradition entered the Philippines, however, something changed. Indigenous customs of communal eating, along with the

Filipino sense of celebration as an act of togetherness, transformed the meal into a warm family reunion. Christianity remained central, yet the emotional character of Noche Buena became distinctly Filipino: joyful, abundant, affectionate, even lively to the point of noisy.

Media Noche arrived through the same colonial channels, but the symbolism around it drew heavily from precolonial beliefs. Long before Spanish rule, Filipinos practiced rituals to welcome the new year or mark moments of renewal, including noisemaking to scare away malevolent spirits and offering food to invite blessings. When Spanish naming and Catholic calendar structures merged with these older rituals, Media Noche became a celebration that recognized both the passage of time and the hope for the future. If Noche Buena is a sacred welcome to the divine, Media Noche is an embrace of possibility and good fortune.

THE SACRED AND THE JOYFUL

Noche Buena is tied to reverence.

Even in households that are no longer strictly religious, there is an atmosphere of gentleness on Christmas Eve. Families return to their childhood homes if they can. The television plays carols while neighbors greet each other over fences. The air often smells of warm bread, cheese, salted ham, and occasionally simmering chocolate from tablea.

Media Noche on the other hand is electric. It is a celebration of sound and laughter, marked by firecrackers, horns, and pots banged loudly together. Children run outside with sparklers while adults count down the minutes. The meal does not simply nourish. It declares hope. It insists that the coming year will overflow with sustenance and good luck.

Pandesal soft enough to tear with fingertips. Bibingka and puto bumbong bought near the church after Mass, eaten with salted egg, cheese, or coconut. Homemade tsokolate made thick with ground cacao tablets in a batirol pot. These foods do not simply feed. They recall grandparents, childhood Christmases, provincial mornings, and family stories repeated every year.

WHAT THE TABLE REVEALS ACROSS THE REGIONS

The Filipino holiday table is a map of memory. The dishes served during Noche Buena tend to emphasize comfort, warmth, and familiarity. Queso de bola placed in the center of the table, slightly sweating in the tropical heat. Ham glazed until glossy.

Media Noche leans into symbolism. Round fruits for prosperity. Long noodles for longevity. Sticky rice to ensure relationships remain close. A full table that must not be scarce, since scarcity on the table at midnight is believed to echo scarcity throughout the year. Even those who cannot afford extravagance find ways to add abundance, often through resourcefulness and community sharing. It is not the price of the food that matters. It is the act of preparing with optimism.

Although the concept is shared, the feasts look different across the archipelago. In Pampanga, rich culinary traditions highlight

bringhe, morcon, and ensaymada that melts on the tongue. Ilocanos lean toward salty cured meats and vegetables preserved for longevity. Cebuanos pride themselves on lechon that remains crisp even after hours of celebration. In the Visayas, kinilaw or inasal might appear on the table, while in Mindanao, dishes influenced by Tausug, Maranao, and Maguindanao traditions create feasts fragrant with spices like palapa or turmeric. The holiday table is a living atlas of Filipino diversity.

REINVENTING TRADITION TODAY

Contemporary Filipino families continue to reinterpret these feasts. Some gather early for the sake of relatives working night shifts or those living apart. Others incorporate international dishes such as Korean barbecue sets, Japanese cheesecake, or pasta baked with mozzarella instead of traditional queso de bola. Some families hold their celebrations entirely online, sharing screens across continents. Vegan feasts, halal spreads, and allergyfriendly menus reflect changing lifestyles and inclusivity. Yet even with change, the emotional purpose stays constant. To gather. To share. To remember. To hope.

KEEPING TRADITION ALIVE ABROAD

For the Filipino diaspora, the Feasts of Two Midnights can be bittersweet. Time zones may separate families. Winter cold may replace the tropical night air. Ingredients may require substitution or improvisation. Yet Noche Buena and Media Noche take on a deeper meaning for those who celebrate far from home. These meals become acts of remembrance and identity. Even a simple meal of ham and rice eaten after work can become an anchor to memory. The aroma alone can bring home into the room.

THE CELEBRATION ENDURES

To sit at the midnight table is to participate in a story that stretches across generations. Noche Buena honors what has been given. Media Noche welcomes what has yet to come. Together, they form a rhythm of gratitude, memory, continuity, and hope. No matter how traditions shift or where Filipinos find themselves in the world, the Feasts of Two Midnights endure because they are not merely events. They are expressions of who we are.

MAPI OFFERS TWO (2) TYPES OF MEMBERSHIPS:

Make the Most of 2026: Smart Travel Planning Around Philippine Holidays

The 2026 Philippine holiday calendar isn’t just a schedule of days off; it’s a blueprint for meaningful travel, family reunions, and culturally rich getaways. For Filipinos at home, long weekends are invitations to explore regional treasures— from cool highland towns to sun kissed coastal escapes. For Filipinos abroad, these dates offer rare windows to return home, reconnect with loved ones, and participate in the country’s vibrant celebrations without sacrificing work commitments. The key to turning every holiday into a successful trip is thoughtful planning that respects both your time and your budget.

First, map the year by month and note the holidays that naturally yield long weekends. January through April bring festival mood and religious observances that transform ordinary routes into scenic journeys. By bridging days off with adjacent weekends, families can extend trips without burning through vacation time, while solo travelers can design restorative breaks that align with peak seasonal beauty or regional events.

November and December pack the calendar with memorial days and festive traditions that are uniquely Filipino, offering opportunities to immerse in local histories and holiday cheer.

For travelers at home, think region first and destination second. If a family has never seen the Banaue terraces or the turquoise coves of Palawan, a long weekend can become a three or four day adventure with minimal planning if booked in advance. For balikbayans, the aim is often deeper connection: a multi-generational visit, time in provincial towns, and participation in local fiestas that illuminate a sense of belonging. In both cases, securing flexible, cancellable bookings early reduces risk, while selecting accommodations in central areas or well-connected hubs minimizes transit time and stress.

A practical travel mindset hinges on three pillars: timing, costs, and comfort. Timing means choosing travel days that dodge peak-heavy periods while still maximizing experience. Costs demand early flight searches, careful hotel

selection, and the savvy use of midweek departures or regional airports to unlock savings.

Comfort centers on reliable internet for remote workers, access to healthcare options should a health need arise, and packing strategies that cover both urban sightseeing and rural exploration. Packing light but ready for festival celebrations or sudden rain showers ensures a smoother journey from start to finish.

Cultural immersion grows in importance as travel becomes more accessible. Holidays offer a chance to witness or participate in local traditions, taste seasonal specialties, and photograph memories that capture the country’s living heritage. Whether it is the glow of Christmas markets, the color of a Panagbenga festival, or the solemnity of a Holy Week procession, these moments enrich travel far beyond photos and souvenirs. The goal is to travel with intention: to learn, to connect, and to return with stories that strengthen family bonds and national pride.

As the day arrives for each holiday, a traveler’s toolkit should include a few reliable staples:

a flexible itinerary, digital copies of essential documents, and a lightweight carry that can adapt to both city strolls and rural excursions. Stay informed about local transport schedules, weather forecasts, and safety advisories, and remember that sometimes the best travel plans are those that yield room for serendipity—the unexpected festival, the unplanned stop at a roadside café, or a sunset view that turns an ordinary trip into a lifelong memory.

In the end, the beauty of traveling the 2026 Philippine holidays lies in transformation. It is a chance to honor family traditions, explore the country’s remarkable landscapes, and maintain a well-earned sense of personal renewal. Whether returning home after years abroad or stepping out for a carefully timed weekend, the calendar becomes less a list of days off and more a map to new experiences, deeper connections, and lasting memories. If you’d like, this can be tailored to a specific word count, include a traveler’s checklist, or feature a sample 2-week itinerary that aligns with major holidays.

CREBA’s 2025 National Convention Champions ‘Housing for All’

The recently concluded Chamber of Real Estate and Builders’ Associations (CREBA) 2025 National Convention, in partnership with the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD), successfully convened real estate developers, urban planners, builders, property investors, policymakers and industry stakeholders for three days of discussions, knowledge sharing, networking and exhibits while celebrating National Shelter Month and CREBA’s 52nd founding anniversary.

Themed “One voice, one mission: Housing for all,” the three-day convention from Oct. 15 to 17, 2025 filled the halls of Hotel Supreme Mall & Events Center in Baguio City with hope and amplified the call for affordable, safe and resilient homes for every Filipino.

This mission became more crucial in light of frequent earthquakes, the worsening impact of climate change and other threats that continue to put people’s homes

and lives at risk.

CREBA President Noel “Toti” Cariño told The Manila Times that while there have been technologies that could address these climate-related issues, the bigger challenge would be making houses affordable and, at the same time, strong and resilient.

Cariño said the country should first address the affordability issue for the housing industry to move forward, explaining, “Make housing not only affordable but also with greater access. Our mantra is that every Filipino should have a roof over their head. A home for every Filipino is the target of CREBA, and we’re always working toward this goal.”

“As a developing country, we can really be attuned to the market this way. And who is our market? — people who want to leave their houses because they cannot afford the current housing anymore,” he added.

The convention’s first day kicked off with a CREBA–

At the 2025 CREBA National Convention, the Board of Directors was honored for their dedication and passion in championing CREBA’s mission. Their leadership goes beyond strategy; it’s a source of inspiration that motivates every member to work together toward a brighter future for the real estate industry and the Filipino community.

CREBA Baguio-Benguet Chapter, led by President Emmanuel Noel S. Clemente and Chairman Ramon Ernesto Tagle hosted the 2025 CREBA NatCon, making it a memorable gathering of community and shared purpose.

DHSUD Housing Regulations Forum, titled “Safe and resilient homes for Filipino families,” held in partnership with the DHSUD-Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

Among the topics covered by the event were emerging trends and policy updates in housing and real estate; zoning and enforcement overview under executive order (EO) 71 and EO 72; updated guidelines, standards and compliance requirements on subdivision development; sustainable urban development for Filipino communities; professionalizing real estate practice: Republic Act 9646 and the Code of Ethics; enforcement of real estate laws and policies in CAR; and updates on the new implementing rules and regulations for homeowners’ associations.

Meanwhile, the plenary sessions for Day 1 included the following: “Aligning government and private sector goals: Bridging bureaucracy and business for housing acceleration,” “Funding the vision innovative financing models for mass housing and local government unit (LGU) participation,” “Land use, planning and development land inventory for sustainable communities” and “Bridging the funding divide: Developers and buyers financing to accelerate 4PH

Among the highlights of Day 1 was the turnover of P300,000 financial assistance to members of the Tadiangan Resettlement HOA for home improvement support.

Meanwhile, the CREBA President’s Cup Golf Tournament took place at Pinewoods Golf & Country Club and swung the opening day on a high note through connection and friendly competition. The golf event was organized in support of visually impaired members of Vismar-Baguio City.

In the afternoon, alumni of the Executive Diploma Program in Real Estate Management — a continuing education program of the De La Salle College of Saint Benilde or DLS-CSB and CREBA — also came together to reconnect and congratulate the newest graduates at the CREBA-Certified Real Estate Professional Pinning Ceremonies.

Pasig City Vice Mayor Robert Jaworski Jr. opened the second day of the convention with the theme “Laying the foundation for inclusive and sustainable housing.”

On the finance side, Finance Undersecretary Maria Edita Tan joined the plenary session on innovative financing models for mass housing and LGU participation. Afterwards, Joey Roi Bondoc of Colliers Philippines shared his insights about aligning government and private sector goals through bridging bureaucracy and business for housing acceleration.

Meanwhile, CREBA past president Nathaniel Von Einsiedel spoke during the “Urban planning and designing for sustainable communities” session.

On the third day, DHSUD Senior Undersecretary Henry Yap presented the state of the housing sector and the Expanded 4PH.

Prasoon Kumar, co-founder and CEO of BillionBricks, along with Carlo Sagun, president and CEO of Bayan Family of Foundations, joined the panel on “Technology and Green Housing Innovations” session, where they talked about energy-efficient design, modular building, smart housing solutions and resilient construction.

To add a global perspective, Kent Emmons — an American entrepreneur, author and media executive — joined the dialogue on “Navigating international real estate amid US policy changes.”

Emmons was joined by Christopher Felix, NAR global ambassador for the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia, who also provided insights on strengthening and attracting global real estate partnerships.

Meanwhile, Social Housing Finance Corp. Vice President for North Luzon Branch Jones Tomas talked about inclusive solutions for informal settlements, rural housing and the rental market in one of the sessions, titled “Housing the underserved.”

Overall, the October 16 sessions, with the theme “Laying the foundation for inclusive and sustainable housing,” centered on how everyone could sustainably contribute to closing the housing gap.

Meanwhile, the sessions on the third day, framed under the theme “Realizing the vision: From policy to groundbreaking,” shifted the focus on concrete, actionable steps for the country to follow in order to turn the discussions and housing policies into actual developments and progress.

The three-day housing expo became a venue for partnerships, opportunities and discovering trends as the nation’s real estate and housing players set up booths at the expo.

The convention was capped off with CREBA’s 52nd anniversary gala night on October 17.

Model LGUs” for their leadership, firm stance against corruption, and efforts to build a business-friendly environment that encourages investments in real estate, housing and infrastructure development.

The award was bestowed upon Baguio Mayor Benjamin Magalong, Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto and the respective City Councils for setting a strong example for other LGUs to follow.

FIGHTING CORRUPTION

Pasig City Vice Mayor Jaworski received the recognition. In his speech, he credited and thanked Mayor Sotto for walking the talk and leading by example, sharing how the local government of Pasig under Mayor Sotto’s leadership challenged the norm in 2019 and has since been successfully fighting against corruption, patronage politics and inefficiency.

Amid persisting corruption in the country, Jaworski expressed a hard truth: “Mayor Vico and the city council of our beloved city are just doing what should be the norm. We are merely doing our sworn duty to protect the interest of the people and ensure that government funds are used to benefit the public good and not for the good of politicians. The true heroes that are more deserving of this recognition are the people of Pasig, who have shown the entire country that their votes are sacred and are not for sale. Sila ang dapat natin parangalan (They are the ones we should honor).”

“In Pasig, we realized that genuine reforms won’t just happen overnight. But we also knew that it had to begin somewhere,” he continued.

As the three-day CREBA 2025 National Convention closed, it served as a powerful reminder to all sectors — public and private alike — that sustainable, accessible and affordable housing was key to nation building and human development.

CREBA amplified that no Filipino family should have to live in a home vulnerable to climate change or beyond their means. Together, let’s work toward building resilient and inclusive communities.

Architect Nestor Mangio, CREBA national chairman Jerry Navarrete, DBP SAVP Catherine Camarao, PagIbig President Marilene Acosta, NHMFC President Renato Tobias, CREBA president Noel Toti Cariño and 2025 natcon chair Fernando S. Tiong sign the commitment wall for good governance.

At this year’s convention, CREBA honored the cities of Pasig and Baguio, naming them as the “Outstanding

The Longest Christmas in the World

Why Filipinos Celebrate Longer, Love Harder, and Keep the Spirit of Christmas Alive Across Oceans and Time

In the Philippines, Christmas does not arrive in December. It begins quietly in September, when radio stations play the first familiar carols and mall speakers hum with songs of longing and return. Outside, the skies are still warm and rainy, yet something in the air shifts. People look up a little more. They speak of home with softer voices. The season unfolds slowly, not as an event but as a mood. It lasts because it needs to. It waits because people need time to gather themselves, to arrive, to feel ready to celebrate. Christmas begins early so no one has to rush to joy. It is a season that stretches wide enough to include every distance, every schedule, every story of separation or return.

JOY AS RESILIENCE

To the world, the Filipino Christmas is festive and bright. Lanterns glow against city skylines. Streets shimmer with lights. Choirs fill the air with harmony. Yet beneath the celebration lies something deeply emotional. The longest Christmas is not just about festivity. It is about survival. The Philippines has endured storms, floods, political divides, and the quiet struggles of daily life. Still, every year, people find their way to awe. Joy here is not careless. It is chosen. It is a declaration that happiness can coexist with hardship. Christmas becomes a refuge, a stretch of time where families can be together, even

if the year has been heavy.

The long season gives room for weary hearts to rest, to remember good things, and to believe that better days can still come.

A CELEBRATION LARGE ENOUGH FOR DISTANCE

In thousands of apartments, dormitories, and shared rooms across the world, Filipinos recreate Christmas. A paper parol taped to a window. A small table filled with dishes remembered from childhood. A video call that bridges time zones. These celebrations are quieter, smaller, gentler, but they carry the same heartbeat.

Filipinos abroad often describe Christmas as the time when longing becomes physical. When scents, songs, and memories feel close enough to touch. Yet the season is long enough to hold both presence and absence. Families who cannot come home still feel included. The months of celebration allow meaning to travel at the pace of emotion.

A balikbayan box packed in October arrives just in time for December. A recorded song reaches a school program. A message sent across an ocean finds its place at the dinner table. The season waits for everyone.

GATHERING THE LIGHT

What makes the Filipino Christmas special is not simply its length, but its warmth. Christmas is not treated as a single event but as an atmosphere that surrounds community. It is the neighbor who sends over food. The cousin who arrives unannounced. The friend who calls just to laugh about old memories.

There are lights, yes, but it is the warmth that people remember. The laughter late

at night. The soft, tired joy of Noche Buena. The way the world feels slower and kinder. The long Christmas gives people permission to soften, to be generous, to open their homes and their arms a little wider.

HOLDING ON, LETTING GO, BEGINNING AGAIN

When January arrives, the decorations do not disappear overnight. The warmth does not vanish with fireworks. Instead, the season fades gradually, like a story that ends softly. The Philippines welcomes the new year with a sense of continuity. Joy does not end. It simply transforms into hope.

The long Christmas is not only a celebration of what has been. It is an offering to what will come. It allows families to carry love forward. It teaches that joy is not a holiday but a practice. It shows that even in a world that changes too quickly, some things are worth keeping.

A SEASON THAT BELIEVES IN US

The Philippines keeps Christmas long because the heart needs time to feel full again. Because families deserve time to find one another. Because love becomes real not in grand gestures but in small, consistent warmth.

Christmas stretches across four months because joy is not something Filipinos are willing to rush. It is something they believe in. Something they return to. Something they hold, gently and firmly, the way one holds a memory that has kept them going through the hardest parts of the year.

In the end, the longest Christmas in the world is not about scale. It is about meaning. It is about choosing light again and again, for as long as it takes.

A Coffee Journey

October 25, 2025 marked a milestone for Aponi Bayosa co-founders Fides HerreraLim and Stella Sutton with the grand launch of their distinctive coffee brand at Common Grounds in Rockwell. Rather than simply presenting their premium beans, Fides and Stella created an immersive journey for coffee lovers to discover the heritage and intention behind their seven remarkable varieties. These are far from ordinary beans. Each one carries a story shaped by the long path from farm to cup.

During the event, guests learned about the art of coffee farming, roasting, and cupping through engaging talks and live demonstrations. Every element was designed to deepen appreciation for the

unique flavor profiles sourced from various regions across the Philippines. What truly sets Aponi Bayosa apart is its commitment to empowering indigenous women farmers, an advocacy that Fides and Stella have woven into every bag they produce.

The launch was met with enthusiasm and curiosity. Guests listened intently to expert speakers, gaining new insights that changed the way they understood coffee. Among those who shared heartfelt reflections was attendee Maribel Marquez Zonaga, whose personal take added an authentic and relatable touch to the gathering.

coffee. Yet the most memorable kind is the coffee that tastes exceptional and carries a story with purpose. This is the heart of Aponi Bayosa.

Last month, I had the privilege of experiencing a true “coffee journey” from bean to cup, hosted by the founder of Aponi Bayosa. It was both educational and enjoyable for everyone present. The talks by a coffee grower, a roaster and distributor, and a barista revealed just how much artistry and craftsmanship go into making a truly satisfying cup. Beyond ingredients and technique, passion and intention elevate coffee into something that pleases the palate, fills the stomach, and warms the heart.

Fides shared the deeper mission behind Aponi Bayosa, which is to support indigenous coffee farmers in Benguet and other parts of the country. She herself comes from the indigenous Ibaloi tribe of the Cordilleras. The brand’s name honors her great grandmother, Bayosa, a coffee grower in the Benguet highlands. “Apo ni” means granddaughter of Bayosa, making the brand not only a tribute but a continuation of a legacy. There is something profoundly moving about drinking coffee that is rich in flavor and rich in story.

And what a range of flavors Aponi Bayosa offers. With seven varieties to choose from, the brand caters to every type of coffee drinker. Each pack includes tasting notes to spark curiosity, whether one prefers familiar chocolaty profiles or more complex notes such as bright acidity with sweet fruity floral undertones and a clear, memorable aftertaste. It is coffee designed to satisfy both casual drinkers and devoted aficionados.

Congratulations to Fides and Stella for launching a brand that not only celebrates Philippine coffee at its finest but also uplifts the communities that make it possible. May

Pedro Linas, deputy head mission Embassy of Spain; Stein Melsbo; Ambassador of Finland Saija Nurminen; Madam Eva Fischer-Mellbin, spouse of ambassador of Denmark, participate in the cupping and tasting of Aponi Bayosa coffee.

their efforts bring lasting impact to indigenous coffee growers, and may the story of Bayosa continue to live on in every cup.

We invite you to discover the sublime taste of Aponi Bayosa’s premium coffee beans. Consistently ranked highly by connoisseurs for their exceptional quality and layered flavor profiles, these limited-availability beans represent the pinnacle of thoughtful coffee craftsmanship. Experience the difference in every sip. Visit www.aponibayosa.com for more information.

Pamantasan: Manila’s Top University

Where Manila goes, the nation goes. For decades, Manilans took pride in this slogan because it reflected reality. Nowhere is this more evident than in the field of education.

As early as the 1960s, Manila boasted modern school buildings beginning with the administration of Mayor Arsenio Lacson. When Mayor Antonio J. Villegas succeeded him at City Hall, which he dubbed “Maharnilad,” the young mayor expanded Lacson’s program by offering free tuition in elementary and high schools and modernizing their facilities. With the support of President Diosdado Macapagal and Congress, Villegas opened on July 17, 1967, the country’s first tuition-free university, the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM). The university rose on historic grounds in Intramuros once occupied by the Spanish fortress Cuartel del Rey and the venue of the trial and sentencing of Dr. Jose Rizal. The site had also been home to the Universidad de San Ignacio, the country’s first Royal and Pontifical University, as well as the Escuela Municipal de Manila, Ateneo Municipal de Manila, the Jesuit compound, and later the headquarters of American forces under Gen. Douglas MacArthur.

To honor its storied past and its transformation from an experiment to one of the country’s premier institutions of higher learning, PLM, led by its president Dr. Domingo Reyes Jr., celebrated its 60th year

last July. The university marked the milestone with unprecedented accomplishments, including consistently topping licensure examinations in medicine, nursing, engineering, accounting, and social work. Even its earliest graduates set the tone, among them Rosalinda Taguiam Palad, PLM’s first nurse graduate and a topnotcher in the board exam. At 60, the university has produced over 150,000 graduates across its sixteen colleges and has conferred honors on distinguished leaders such as California Governor Gavin Newsom, the late Senator Dianne Feinstein, Senators Panfilo Lacson and Loren Legarda, Supreme Court Justices Jhosep Lopez and Antonio Nachura, Hawaii Governors Benjamin Cayetano and Linda Lingle, business leaders Manuel V. Pangilinan and Emilio Yap, Dr. Daisaku Ikeda of Soka Gakkai University, the late Congressman Nestor C. Ponce Jr. of the pioneer class of 1967, among many others.

With its strong academic programs and the excellent performance of its graduates, PLM has become the model for local government–supported universities nationwide. Today, there are 137 city, municipal, and provincial colleges across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao created in the image of PLM, many of which adopted the term “Pamantasan” from the word “pantas,” meaning wise.

More significantly, fifty years after PLM’s founding,

THE FACADE of the PLM campus

the national government institutionalized free college education through the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act, or Republic Act 10931, signed by President Rodrigo Duterte. This landmark law expanded Manila’s pioneering vision and opened the doors of higher learning to thousands more Filipino youth.

During its Diamond Jubilee celebration, PLM honored its first five pioneer batches of students, its past presidents, chairpersons, and members of the Board of Regents, the university’s highest policy and administrative body. For the first time, PLM also conferred its highest alumni honor, the Haribon Awards, in ceremonies at the Manila Hotel. The honorees included Commission on Elections Chairman George Garcia, Pulitzer Prize winner Manuel Mogato, Dr. Sybil Jade Peña of Doctors Without Borders, former Ambassador Constancio Vingno Jr., former United Nations Representative Richard Prado, journalist-author and former PLM Regent Alfredo Gabot, comedian-actor Michael V. (Beethoven Bunagan), New York lawyer Manuel Quintal, former GMA Network vice president Wilma Galvante, former RPN 9 president Roberto del Rosario, and former commissioner George Gange of the San Jose, California International Airport.

One of the highlights of the anniversary was the reinstallation and rededication of the Mayor Antonio J. Villegas Bust Monument and Mini Park, led by Dr. Reyes and Bishop Reuben Abante, president of the PLM Alumni Association. The monument and park, initiated by the PLM Scholars Foundation Inc., were built through donations from grateful alumni now based across the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, and beyond. The original unveiling featured then Vice President Gloria

SM Supermalls Showcases Anna Vergel RS artworks

SM Supermalls has long supported the growth and careers of local Filipino artists.

Among the artists that SM Supermalls proudly features along the hallways of their Corporate HQ at the SM Mall of Asia Complex as well as their corporate website is acclaimed visual artist Anna Vergel RS.

A proud Iskolar ng Bayan and graduate of the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts, Vergel RS’ works are cited by SM as exploring “themes of mythology, transformation, and femininity…. Her recent works continue her exploration of strength and reinvention—on canvas and in life.”

“I am deeply humbled that the SM Group, especially SM Prime Holdings Executive Committee Chairman and billionaire Hans Sy, have included my works in their website for greater appreciation of the public,” Vergel RS shared.

Here are three Vergel RS pieces that can be inspected via a visit to their bayside office, or a quick stroll at their site: https://www. smsupermalls.com/phq-paintings-annavergel-r-s.

The multi-disciplinary artist Anna Vergel RS, an alumna of the UP College of Fine Arts, is an avid golfer.

“Culmination” is an “impactful abstract” that “features a central, radiant gold form seemingly emerging from a swirl of expressive black and grey brushstrokes. The minimalist palette, dominated by white, black, and gold, creates an engaging sense of energy and focus,” declared SM.

This piece, titled “Giving Back,” “created in a specific size, was produced for a limited group of ten individuals. It was gifted as a sincere expression of the artist’s gratitude, reflecting meaningful connections formed over the years,” according to SM.

The “Lucky Blue” piece “features bold strokes of intense yellow against fragmented blues and grays. The composition suggests an energetic interplay, reminiscent of a vivid sky meeting a tumultuous sea, leaving a strong evocation of raw emotion and natural force.”

The Zen Institute Champions the Future of Skin Rejuvenation with Exosome Therapy

medical aesthetics, once again raises the bar in skin health and beauty by introducing Exosome Therapy a groundbreaking innovation that harnesses the power of regenerative science for visible, long-lasting skin rejuvenation

“Traditional treatments have always focused on temporary surface results. With Exosomes, we are going deeper encouraging the body’s own healing mechanisms to restore and maintain skin health naturally. It’s not just about beauty; it’s about cellular wellness.”
Dr Mary Jane Torres, Founder and Medical Director, The Zen Institute

Exosomes, often referred to as the next frontier in aesthetic medicine, are extracellular vesicles that carry essential growth factors, proteins, and genetic material responsible for repairing and revitalizing cells. When applied to the skin, they act as powerful messengers that trigger regeneration, stimulate collagen production, and reduce inflammation. The result is skin that is healthier, smoother, and more youthful from within.

Why Exosomes?

Unlike conventional anti-aging treatments, Exosome therapy offers:

Advanced Skin Regeneration: Helps repair sun damage, scars, fine lines, and uneven texture.

Collagen Boosting: Promotes firmness and elasticity for youthful resilience.

Anti-Inflammatory Benefits: Calms skin conditions such as redness, acne, and sensitivity.

Long-Term Results: Works at the cellular level, ensuring improvements that go beyond the surface.

Clients who have undergone the procedure report visible improvements in radiance, hydration, and skin smoothness within weeks.

With regular sessions, the skin continues to improve, making it an ideal treatment for those seeking a youthful glow without surgery or downtime.

The Zen Institute Approach

At The Zen Institute, science meets serenity. Each exosome treatment is carefully tailored to suit the client’s unique skin needs, complemented by Zen’s philosophy of safe, holistic, and non-invasive beauty. The clinic integrates state-of-the-art technology with personalized medical expertise, ensuring every client experiences rejuvenation in both body and spirit.

“Exosome therapy represents a new era in aesthetics,” adds Dr. Torres. “It aligns perfectly with our mission at Zen—to deliver treatments that not only enhance outer beauty but also support overall wellness.”

More Than Aesthetic Results

Beyond its cosmetic benefits, Exosome therapy reflects the growing global shift toward regenerative medicine—treatments that restore, rather than mask, the body’s natural functions. For The Institute, this is step forward in its continued advocacy for wellness-driven medical aesthetics.

Travel Tips for Overcoming Holiday Hurdles

A trip to visit loved ones or a holiday-themed vacation with your nearest and dearest can create magical memories, but first, you’ve got to get there. If the thought of holiday travel makes you nauseous, rest assured that a little planning and the right resources can help your festive getaway go smoother.

Overcome the hustle and bustle of the busiest travel season of the year with this expert advice.

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM ILLNESSES

The holidays intertwine with cold and flu season, meaning staying healthy on your trip is a must. Travel can be physically draining, which makes you more susceptible to common illnesses. However, some general health tips can go a long way, such as:

• Wash your hands: Between plane rides, rental cars and hotel rooms, you’re going to handle frequently touched objects in public spaces. Carry hand sanitizer and be sure to thoroughly wash your hands regularly with soap and warm water.

• Pack medications: It’s critical to pack prescribed medications, no doubt, but consider bringing along over-the-counter vitamins and cold medicine so you’re prepared for anything.

• Consult your doctor: Ask your doctor about any vaccinations you may need, especially

if traveling internationally. It’s important to get all recommended shots and treatments prior to departure.

BE PREPARED FOR DELAYS

Spontaneous moments are often the most memorable, but sometimes unplanned events aren’t so welcome. Because it’s nearly impossible for an entire vacation to go as scripted, consider purchasing a travel protection plan that includes the travel inconvenience benefit. This benefit may compensate you for unforeseen circumstances like tarmac delays or ski resort closures. Hang on to receipts that show dates and payments to make the claim process a breeze.

OVERCOME JET LAG

Air travel can disrupt sleep patterns, particularly if you’re flying across multiple time zones, causing difficulty sleeping and irritability. Be mindful of caffeine and alcohol intake, which can further impact sleep patterns. Exposure to light at the appropriate times can help reset your circadian rhythm while a low-dose melatonin can produce mild sleepiness if you’re having trouble catching some Z’s.

Traveling west is easiest on your internal clock as you “gain time” heading westward; in contrast, flying east requires shifting the timing of your body clock to make up for the “lost time.” Leading up to eastward travel, try going to bed and waking up earlier.

HAVE A BACKUP PLAN

Even the best travel plans can change unexpectedly. Standard trip cancellation coverage often applies only to specific events, such as illness, injury, or natural disasters. For travelers seeking extra peace of mind, consider looking into optional add-ons like “Cancel for Any Reason” coverage, which can offer broader protection and flexibility if your plans shift.

If you’re someone who travels frequently— especially during the busy holiday season—an annual travel insurance plan might be worth exploring. These plans can provide coverage for multiple trips throughout the year, often including trip cancellation, emergency medical expenses, and other unexpected disruptions.

Before purchasing, always review the fine print to understand what is and isn’t covered, including any limits, exclusions, or requirements that may apply.

Progress with Purpose: How SM Nurtures Filipino Hope

Creating shared value for a sustainable

Across the Philippine archipelago, from the busy heart of Metro Manila to the quiet towns of the Visayas and the vibrant landscapes of Mindanao, one name has become woven into everyday life: SM. Its presence is more than the familiar glow of a mall sign or the hum of shoppers moving through its halls. It lives in the rhythm of neighborhoods, in family traditions, and in the shared spaces where communities come together.

Over the decades, SM has grown from a small shoe store into one of the country’s leading companies, with SM Investments Corporation as the parent company. Beyond retail, SM’s core businesses include banking through BDO Unibank, Inc. and China Banking Corporation, property development through SM Prime Holdings, and portfolio businesses like 2GO Group for logistics and Philippine Geothermal Production Company for renewable energy.

But SM’s true strength lies in the way it uses that reach to inspire and uplift.

SM’s presence feels almost like a heartbeat in pulse with the country. Inside its halls, families linger over shared meals while children tug at their parents’ hands toward glowing displays. Small business owners stand proudly at their stalls, greeting strangers who may soon become loyal customers. Shoppers pause to take in the sparkle of lights and the hum of music that fills the air. Around every corner, conversations flow, ideas take root, and communities draw closer. Beneath it all is a quiet but steady force: spaces built to bring people together, opportunities designed to let dreams take flight, and a lasting commitment to care that reaches far beyond the season.

LEGACY BUILT WITH HEART

The story of SM is, in many ways, the story of modern Filipino ambition. It began with Henry Sy Sr., who opened a small shoe store in Manila in the late 1950s. From that modest beginning grew a business that mirrored the aspirations of a nation finding its post war identity. Over time, the store expanded into department stores, then malls, and eventually into banking and property development. Each step reflected a combination of entrepreneurship and sensitivity to the evolving needs of communities.

But what distinguished SM’s journey was its guiding philosophy. From the start, growth was not seen as a solitary pursuit. As the company flourished, it carried with it the belief that business

future

should create opportunities for others. Malls were designed not just as shopping destinations but as modern community spaces where families could gather and local enterprises could flourish. Banking services were extended to reach people who have little access to the formal financial systems. Property developments were planned with the long view of community integration and the convenience of 15-minute cities. These decisions were deliberate, grounded in the understanding that sustainable success depends on shared prosperity.

SM’s legacy is visible in the physical spaces it builds and the invisible networks it supports. Every store opening creates jobs. Every mall becomes a platform for countless small retailers. Every investment in infrastructure signals trust in local economies. Over the decades, this approach has turned SM into more than a corporation. It has become a social presence that grows alongside the communities it serves.

WHERE CORPORATE VISION MEETS COMPASSION AND CARE

Walking through an SM mall or store, one might see families strolling, friends meeting for meals, or children playing in activity areas. Beneath these

SM Scholar and Universidad de Zamboanga graudate Alhadzfar Jammang

everyday scenes lies a carefully nurtured culture of stewardship.

SM Foundation and its division SM Cares is the public expression of this culture. It is an integrated framework that guides how the company interacts with people and the planet.

SM Foundation stemmed from the belief of the founder that social development and business go hand in hand. Established in 1983, it serves communities through college scholarship grants and school buildings, medical missions and the refurbishment of health and wellness centers, shelter, disaster response, environmental programs and care for persons with special needs among others. It is driven by the vision to build a Philippines where everyone has the opportunity for self-improvement and the environment is sustained for future generations.

These efforts often unfold quietly, embedded in daily operations, yet their impact ripples through communities.

SMALL ENTERPRISES BIG DREAMS

Among SM’s most impactful contributions is its support for micro-, small-, and medium enterprises. Across its nationwide network, more than 100,000 MSMEs operate as tenants, suppliers, or partners. This vast ecosystem represents a vibrant crosssection of Filipino entrepreneurship: food stalls serving family recipes, craft shops showcasing local artistry, small clothing brands finding their first big audiences, and homegrown suppliers scaling up to meet national demand.

For many of these businesses, SM is the bridge between local potential and national exposure. A small kiosk in a provincial mall can introduce a product to thousands of daily visitors. A lease inside an SM property can turn a neighborhood venture into a recognizable brand. Beyond providing space, SM helps these enterprises thrive through capacity-building programs, marketing

support, and access to financial services through its banking units. For example, small suppliers are often connected to financing solutions that allow them to expand production, purchase equipment, or hire additional workers.

This support has a multiplier effect. When a small business grows, it creates local jobs, strengthens community economies, and inspires others to take entrepreneurial risks. Many MSMEs that began as single stalls have expanded into multiple branches, franchised their concepts, or developed exportready products. SM’s role in these journeys is often steady and behind the scenes, but entrepreneurs frequently describe SM as a trusted partner that gave them their first real platform.

CARE IN ACTION ACROSS THE ARCHIPELAGO

SM’s heart is most clearly seen when its values move from boardrooms to communities. Across the country, countless stories unfold quietly inside malls, workplaces, and neighborhoods.

When disasters strike, SM’s properties often transform into safe spaces. During major typhoons, malls have sheltered families overnight, with food courts providing warm meals and event spaces turning into evacuation centers. In some towns, SM’s buildings have been among the few structures that remain powered during storms, offering charging stations for residents desperate to reach loved ones. These responses are the product of planning, investment, and a sincere sense of responsibility. The company has integrated disaster resilience into its infrastructure, ensuring that its spaces can serve as reliable lifelines in moments of crisis.

Environmental care is woven into these efforts. SM has steadily increased the number of properties using solar energy, built water catchments underneath its malls to help mitigate flooding in communities, introduced water recycling systems that save millions of liters annually, and maintained recycling programs involving tenants and customers alike.

In Agdangan, Quezon, an association of weavers made up of housewives, create buri fans for Kultura
Kultura, one of SM’s retail brands, is home to many MSMEs each celebrating Filipino artistry and sustainability.

Solar roofs, improved insulation, and more efficient cooling systems contribute to lower energy use. These measures might not always be visible to the public, but they show how environmental responsibility can live quietly in the background of daily operations.

SM also introduced sustainable living choices through its retail stores, positively impacting consumer behavior. It has created an ecosystem that brings shoppers and suppliers together to shift to a more sustainable way of life— through clean beauty, sustainable fashion and eco-friendly home living.

BUILDING COMMUNITIES THROUGH INCLUSION

One of SM’s most enduring contributions to Filipino life is its ability to create spaces where people come together. In a country where malls often double as public squares, SM properties have become modern gathering places that reflect diversity and inclusion. The company recognizes this role and designs its spaces accordingly. Ramps, elevators, tactile paving, accessible restrooms, and dedicated programs for persons with disabilities turn malls into places where everyone feels welcome.

This inclusivity extends beyond infrastructure. SM hosts job fairs that connect employers with job seekers. It organizes events that promote cultural appreciation and supports initiatives that highlight the talents of persons with disabilities. These efforts transform malls from simple commercial centers into living communities where people can connect, learn, and grow together.

REAL PEOPLE, REAL IMPACT

Behind every figure in SM’s financials are human stories that reveal the true impact of its programs.

A group of young millennials started the company Kangkong King, driven by ambition and innovation. Like with all Kultura partner-MSMEs, their vision was encouraged and supported.

Starting with three employees in 2021, Kangkong King now employs around 70 people. From working at a house kitchen to having their own office and factory, Kangkong King has gone a long way in a short time. Their partnership with Kultura, SM’s specialty retail brand, started with a cold email, a solid belief in their products, and knowing who they wanted to partner with.

Anne Gaw, Kangkong King Marketing Head shares, “With Kultura, we’re able to reach Mindanao, Visayas, which has been one of our struggles when we were starting.”

In Agdangan, Quezon, an association of weavers, made up of housewives, create buri fans for Kultura. An organization called Mga Likha ni Inay helps these housewives market their products.

“We’re supporting and helping around 1,800 clients, direct and indirect. This includes employees

of the clients we’re assisting,” shares Aristopher Punzalan, President of Mga Likha ni Inay.

Growing up in Zamboanga City, Alhadzfar Jammang’s family relied on his father’s income as a driver while his mother focused on caring for him and his six siblings. Although college seemed out of reach, he pursued the SM Foundation scholarship to focus on his studies. He was able to graduate cum laude in 2023 from the Universidad de Zamboanga with a degree in Accountancy. The SM Foundation scholarship covered his tuition and miscellaneous fees and provided a stipend, allowing him to concentrate on his coursework.

These are only a few among thousands of stories that unfold each year. They show SM as a partner that gives ordinary people the tools and platforms they need to build better lives.

SUSTAINING GROWTH WITH HEART

As SM looks toward the future, it continues to build on sustainable growth. The company envisions a future where development is inclusive, where small businesses flourish alongside larger enterprises, and where environmental stewardship is embedded in every strategy.

The company’s initiatives remind us that real impact is measured over time. It lives in the persistence of entrepreneurs who open their shops each morning, in the resilience of families rebuilding after storms, and in the quiet determination of young scholars chasing their dreams. It is reflected in greener buildings, inclusive spaces, and partnerships that strengthen local economies.

This vision is grounded in decades of action. From a single shoe store to a national network of malls, retail stores, banks, and other properties, SM has kept one principle constant: success carries a responsibility to give back. That principle shapes decisions, guides investments, and defines the company’s role in the country’s journey forward.

As communities look ahead, SM continues to move with them. Across the Philippines, communities continue to grow, businesses keep evolving, and dreams find new ground to take root. This rhythm is familiar for SM. It invests in people, supports innovation, and listens to the evolving needs of those it serves.

SM invests in people and their future.
