It has been a little more than two months since my last trip to the Philippines. For some of you, it could be just a few short weeks, months, or perhaps even five to ten years since your last trip home. It truly is remarkable how rapid the country is developing with newly constructed highways, new high-rise commercial and residential buildings, to new restaurants and hotels. Whether it is Makati, Ortigas, or Bonifacio Global City, Metro-Manila truly has progressed to become an international destination for both business executives and tourists—this was especially evident on the flight to Manila from Los Angeles. Beside me on the plane was a young American businessman traveling with his wife and daughter. Before the flight departed, he asked me, “Going to the Philippines for business or vacation?” I said, “A mixture of both, that’s the beauty of the Philippines.” Nodding in agreement, he said, “Absolutely, that’s why my family and I love the Philippines.” Later adding that, “I’ve been everywhere throughout the World and Southeast Asia, but my wife and I really love it there.” The young man later went on to talk about his franchise businesses, real estate holdings, 18

and even a chicken farm. He also said that he wants his daughter to get her MBA in the Philippines. Manila’s newfound economic power is changing the face of the city. Trump Tower Philippines A first in the Philippines and Southeast Asia, Trump Tower has reached the 31st storey of construction as of the first quarter of 2015. Unit sizes range from 60 square meters for a Suite to over 400 square meters for a Penthouse. These come with the finest fixtures and finishes, including five-fixture master baths with his and hers sinks, fourfixture guest baths, and separate dressing areas or walk-in closets. Residents will be serviced with a world-class concierge team. Trump Tower has a grand lobby and amenity floors with a fine dining restaurant; and a library, business center, lounge and theater. The tower’s upper floors will offer spectacular views of Makati while residents enjoy the spa, fitness center and yoga studio, as well as the juice bar, sun deck and lap pool overlooking the 29th and 30th floors. 04 Century Spire by Armani Casa In 2014, Giorgio Armani and Century Properties sealed a partnership whose objective is to create the interiors of the luxury amenities of Century Spire, an extraordinary building designed by the renowned architecture firm Studio Daniel Libeskind. The Armani Casa Interior Design Studio has provided complete interior design services to private individuals and property developers since 2003 under the artistic direction of Giorgio Armani. For Century Spire, it is responsible for the design of common spaces and amenities, which include the grand lobby, library, swimming pool with juice bar and relaxation area, as well as the spa, gym, and fitness areas. In addition, on request, residential apartments can be delivered with full Armani/Casa interior design, finish and furniture as a special commission. Commenting on the project, Giorgio

Armani, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Armani Group, said: “I am very happy with this collaboration, and I think that the combination of my vision with that of Daniel Libeskind will lead to the creation of a truly special place, characterized by elegance and a unique charm.” The unique architecture of the tower created by Studio Daniel Libeskind was a key inspiration for the project’s interior design. The building’s structural boldness, with its signature feature – a peak that seems to open up into a blossom – and the dynamism of the oblique lines that characterize the facade have been important points of reference in the development of the concept for its interior. Century Spire units are divided into eight different types, from suites to penthouses. The largest and most prestigious apartments are located on the tower’s top floors.

Acqua Private Residences Urban community embraces the beauty of the tropical rainforest. What is a residential Eden? Named after world-famous waterfalls True to its tropical rainforest theme, Acqua’s residential towers are named after the world’s most majestic waterfalls. Niagara, the first tower, is complete

and undergoing unit turnover. The second tower scheduled for turnover this year is Sutherland, named after one of New Zealand’s tallest waterfalls. The third tower Dettifoss, named after Iceland’s most powerful waterfall, recently completed its construction floors together with Acqua’s fourth tower. For the fourth and fifth towers, Century Properties chose Africa’s Livingstone Falls and Brazil’s Iguazu Falls as inspirations, respectively. The company also worked with two worldrenowned brands to offer highlydistinctive interior designed residential properties: MissoniHome for Acqua Livingstone and yoo inspired by Starck (founded by John Hitchcox and Philippe Starck) for Acqua Iguazu. Meanwhile, Acqua’s sixth tower will introduce a unique touch to the “home away from home” concept in partnership with another brand. Branded residences by Missoni Home and yoo The first residential building in the world that will bear the creative and colorful mark of MissoniHome will rise in Metro Manila through the planned 52-storey Acqua Livingstone. The tower will immerse residents in the rich and colorful experience of the MissoniHome-designed space, which is not available elsewhere. Its design philosophy will be fully articulated at the Canopy, a split-level complex that will house a function room, business center, a gym and spa, an amphitheater, DJ booth, dance floor, pool and barbeque facilities. An organically-shaped wire mesh tree that winds its way up will connect the Canopy’s two levels—providing a unique al fresco dining area and observation decks from where one can enjoy fantastic views of the Makati, Manila, and Mandaluyong skylines. The design firm called yoo, cofounded by Philippe Starck and John Hitchcox, brings its touch of the extraordinary to the Acqua Iguazu tower through the Cielo, an exclusive sky deck that will have an iconic giant orb that looks like a sun during the day and a moon at night. At this multi-level area one can also find the Wonder Bar and Library, which serve as an indoor/outdoor library during the day and a cocktail bar at night; a posh dining area from which the reflection of a suspended moon and Starck’s favorite lines from Le Petit Prince add a touch whimsy to the space; a private theater that evokes the old world charm of cinema’s golden age; and multi-level waterfalls that gather into a pool. Yoo has likewise designed the Acqua Iguazu lobby to be as breathtaking: the long narrow room is framed by three funnels and highlighted with a sculptural representation of the moon and a line from Le Petit Prince to echo that of the Cielo. Both brands also offer optional interior designed units for their respective towers upon request. Meanwhile, the construction of Acqua’s Pebble amenity is in full swing. Designed like a smooth river stone, this country club by the water will be home 28

On April 21, 2015 at the World Economic Forum on East Asia 2015 in Jakarta, Indonesia, IHS Singapore Asia-Pacific Chief Economis, Rajiv Biswas announced that the Philippines’ gross domestic product will reach $1.05 Trillion by 2029. Biswas predicts the total GDP of the Philippines will rise from $310 billion this year to $500 billion by 2020 ignited by the rapid growth of the Information TechnologyBusiness Process Outsourcing Industry and overseas remittances. The nation’s per capita GDP is also eyed to double from $3,000 in 2015 to $6,000 by 2024 which should mean a drastic improvement in the quality of life of the general population. Biswas notes, “These significant increases in per capita GDP will create one of ASEAN’s largest consumer markets of the future, as the middle-class rapidly expands over time. This will help to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) by multinationals into the Philippines manufacturing and services industry.” Biswas later added that “The Philippines economy has the capacity for robust long-term economic growth to average around 5.5% per year over the 2016 to 2020 time horizon.” 36

THE KEY DRIVERS OF ECONOMIC GROWTH THE IT-BPO INDUSTRY

REMITTANCE

The persistent growth in the ITBPO sector and the strong, consistent inflow of remittances from Filipino workers abroad will continue to drive the Philippine economy. The export revenue from the IT-BPO sector has more than doubled between 2008 and 2014, reaching an estimated $13.3 billion. As a result of the vast collection of university-educated workers and a remarkable command of the Englishlanguage skill of the workforce boosts the IT-BPO sector. From 2008 to 2014, the export revenue reached an impressive $18 billion which now employs well over 1 million people. By next year, the IT-BPO Industry is expected to add another 300,000 employees. With the rapid growth of this industry, it is driving economic development in a myriad of cities across the nation—Manila and Cebu are now among the world’s leading IT-BPO centers.

Philippine remittance continues to cushion the economy. Overseas Filipino workers and Balikbayans sent a record $26.9 billion in 2014 up 6.2% in 2013. Remittance provided a key source of strength for the Philippines. 35% of annual remittance is estimated to go directly into residential property investment which enabled the robust expansion of the residential construction sector in both major Philippine cities and developing new cities. This momentum is widely anticipated to remain strong within the next few years notes Mr. Biswas.

CONSTRUCTION In 2014, construction grew by an estimated 10% and is expected to continue to expand further this year and this is directly correlated to the rise of the IT-BPO Industry as described by Biswas, “The rapid growth of the ITBPO industry is also creating positive transmission effects for the rest of the economy, including for the commercial property sector, with rapid growth in demand for commercial floor space, underpinning the development of existing and new office parks in urban centers.”

INFRASTRUCTRE Biswas cited the need for infrastructure investment. The country must create high quality transportation—improving roads, ports, highways, airports, power generation and transmission—all things essential and interconnected for boosting economic growth. JOBS According to government data, roughly 28% of the population still lives in poverty. Both poverty and unemployment issues are glaring problems that need to be addressed. Currently, there are over 10 million people unemployed. “Tackling urban crime must also be another key priority, in order to make the Philippines a more attractive environment for foreign investment and tourism,” Biswas said. Biswas further notes, “Therefore, creating a diversified economy with key growth industries that can generate

Foreign mining firms are lining up to tap the precious metals that virtually remain untapped. The Philippine mining sector is estimated to be a $1.4 trillion industry. However, bureaucracy and environmental debates have consumed the untapped mining industry and land rights issues. However, because of recent governmental and business reforms, this sleeping giant may finally be awakening this year. Chief market strategist, Jonathan Ravelas of the Banco de Oro Unibank forecasts mining as one of the country’s next boom sectors. But it is highly important that the Philippines receives the lion’s share of revenues from the country’s treasures before they go offshore. Signed in 2012, Executive Order 79 is pending Congressional approval. The framework of the order will provide the country with more royalties. In addition to generating revenues, the executive order would appease the environmental calm as it clarifies which parts of the Philippines is closed to mining and enforces all the environmental laws and rules. EASE OF DOING BUSINESS According to Mr. Biswas, the most important driver to achieve the sustained, long-term economic growth will be the Philippines ability to make manufacturing more competitive and this will largely be a result of the country improving the ease of doing business. In order to utilize and spike both foreign and domestic investment, a vast improvement of the business climate must be accomplished. The Philippines, currently ranked 95 on the World Bank’s 38

Ease of Doing Business rankings, is quite low globally. However, this should drastically improve in the near future. “While the Aquino administration made efforts to improve this ranking, there is still a great deal of work to do to improve the overall competitiveness of the Philippines to attract large inflows of FDI,” Biswas said. With attracting foreign and domestic investment, it would boost employment and punctuate the country as a serious player in ASEAN. In a press conference in Manila on April 14, 2015, the Department of Finance, Department of Trade and Industry, the National Competitveness Council (NCC), the Department of the Interior and Local Government, and 9 other institutions announced the launch and unveiled reforms to simplify the process of starting a business to 6 steps and 8 days, down from the excruciating 16 steps and 34 days. Finance Secretary Cesar V. Purisima welcomed the reforms saying, “We are proud to show how it’s clearly more fun, and way easier, to do business in the Philippines. This is a whole-of-government approach with 11 other partners — I thank all of them for their hard work in this continuous process of making the country a better place to do business in. Together, we are making the business of realizing dreams in the Philippines ever easier.” The package of reforms involving starting a business included merging several steps together to create singlewindow applications powered by more interconnectivity across IT systems of different agencies, the removal of several outdated procedures, and the introduction of enhanced one-stop-shop procedures in local government units. These changes involved coordination and partnership across numerous government agencies such as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), BIR, SSS, Pag-IBIG, PhilHealth, and local

government unit Quezon City. The net effect is that the time it will take to incorporate new corporations, partnerships, and non-stock corporations at the Securities and Exchange Commission will be remarkably reduced. Meanwhile, payroll-related payments to Pag-IBIG and PhilHealth will be digitalized and made available online for companies employing at least 10 employees. The reduction of the number of payments from 36 to 13 per year will save businesses and entrepreneurs a lot of time and money. Trade and Industry Secretary and NCC Co-Chair Gregory L. Domingo said, “We continue to be encouraged by reforms that will make our business registration faster, simpler, more efficient, and more transparent. DTI is committed to sustaining the momentum to achieve improved competitiveness and encourage inclusive growth. This ties in nicely as well with our role to boost the development of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). These reforms will motivate SMEs to incorporate when they see the need to do so, as they start or run their businesses.” In discussing the simplified processes, NCC Co-Chairman Guillermo M. Luz said, “These game changers are effective beginning this month in the head offices of the partner agencies and Quezon City and will soon spread across the country. From one fast food chain company in 1981, there are now over 1,000 franchise concepts in the country. According to World Franchising Council, the Philippines ranked fifth in terms of the number of franchisees, fourth biggest in terms of jobs generate by franchising, and 11th in terms of brands that can be franchised. Moreover, the Philippines is considered the franchising hub of Asia with the influx of foreign brands and the number of businesses that have set up shop. No wonder franchising has become a major contributor in the country’s economy.

Fast Food Investing in fast food chains requires a lot of cash but it is a very lucrative business. Selling well established & high quality product is an edge. Franchisees no longer need to spend on marketing because the brand speaks for itself. Majority of the fast food businesses are already known worldwide and have been profitable and solvent for many years already. In the Philippines, McDonald’s opened its doors to franchising to Filipino entrepreneurs in 1985, and has 44

Another popular fast food franchise business is Jollibee, which only started as an ice cream parlor in 1975 offering hot meals and sandwiches. Now, Jollibee has been on the top 100 corporations in the Philippines for the more than two decades. So the big question that comes right after the point when an individual retires is, “What am I going to do now with my time?” Believe me, there are retirees who have been wondering what are they going to do with the overwhelmingly plentiful time that they have – something which they are not so used to, considering the fact that they have been conditioned for many long years to work for long hours. So, retirement can be really relaxing, but if they could not contain their eagerness to take action on something they believe in or something they are very passionate about, life would be heavily boring. Another concern of retirees, especially those who worked as office based employees for many long years is that how else could they be able to have sustainable income channels aside from the pension they are getting and the savings they have in the bank? They become worried about their future finances. They know that they have to do something in order to prevent the dreaded possibility of losing all that they have got earlier than what they have expected.

The age of retirement in the Philippines is at 65, but one can choose early retirement by the age of 50. In other countries, some retirees who have made enough or even more than enough money to live the kind of lifestyles they want are retiring at age 35 already! When we co founded the Philippine Retirement Inc, a private led consortium of the country’s biggest conglomerates in 2008, I discovered that the global retirement age was at 39 years! Retirees are not only interested with R&R anymore. A growing number among them is into investing in the business of franchising. The global retirement phenomenon is at a boom, and it seems that the retirees are finding their ways to save their future by remaining active and business oriented.

You pay a franchise fee and you get a format or system developed by the company (franchisor), the right to use the franchisor’s name for a limited time, and assistance. SLEEPY NO MORE —Binalonan’s Turn to Soar and Shine WRITER Momar G. Visaya photographer Ding Carreon

Located about 200 kilometers north of Manila is the town of Binalonan, one of 44 municipalities of the province of Pangasinan. That’s roughly a threehour drive using the old North Luzon Expressway – or much less – using the newly-inaugurated Tarlac-PangasinanLa Union Expressway (TPLEX). Next town over is its more famous neighbor, the municipality of Manaoag, whose fame can be credited to the Miraculous Shrine of Our Lady of Manaoag. Many pilgrims from Manila and other neighboring provinces in the north schedule regular visits to the shrine. For some devout Catholics, the pilgrimage to Manaoag extends to Binalonan, home to the centuries-old Santo Nino Catholic Church, a landmark of Catholic faith and Spanish colonial legacy. In the nearby barrio of Santa Catalina is Mount Paldingan Stations of the Cross, also a famous pilgrimage site during the Lenten season for devotees. Through the years, the town often described as sleepy, has produced successful sons and daughters who call Binalonan as their hometown. Preeminent Filipino-American writer Carlos Bulosan, famous for his seminal book America is in the Heart, is a proud son. The town has erected a memorial and named a street after him just north of the municipal hall and the town market. 72

Bulosan was born in a farming village known then as Mangusmana (now Mangcasuy). He was among the young Filipino migrant workers who arrived in the United States in 1930. On Sept. 11 last year, 58 years after his death in 1956, Binalonan commemorated the writer’s death anniversary as Carlos Bulosan Day. To this day, the writer continues to inspire his townmates in Binalonan. “Of course, we are very proud of him. He is our hero and he is an inspiration to the people,” Teresita Dacpano, head of information and publication office of the University of Eastern Pangasinan (UEP), a local government-run institution told the Inquirer in an interview. Dacpano said like in the previous commemorations, literary contests on Bulosan among the town’s high school and elementary students were held. “We are doing this to show to the people that he is really a hero worth remembering,” she said. Binalonan is also the hometown of Evangelina de la Cruz Macaraeg Macapagal, mother and spouse of two former presidents - Gloria MacapagalArroyo and Diosdado Macapagal, respectively. This magazine’s publisher, Roger Lagmay Oriel is also a proud son of Binalonan. From being a fifth class municipality


in 2001, Binalonan officials worked hard to make the town into a first class municipality. This means increased business investments, improvements in urban planning and zoning and various income-generating measures. The town has 8,400 hectares of land and is composed of 24 barangays. Its population as of 2010 is 52,832. Many people pass by the town on their way to Baguio City or nearby Manaoag. Among its neighboring towns are Pozorrubio and Sison on the north, San Manuel and Asingan on the east, Urdaneta on the south and Laoac on the west. Binalonan is also becoming one of Pangasinan’s top producers of rice grains and mangoes, making it more progressive. Officials have also been working tirelessly to make Binalonan as an educational center in the province. Incumbent mayor Ramon “MonMon” Guico III has been working on a

strategy and vision in mind to transform Binalonan into a “university town,” an idea which has come into fruition with the town council declaring the municipality as such. Anchored around the project is the University of Eastern Pangasinan (UEP), promulgated in 2005 and officially opened in 2007, and is the first academic institution operated by a municipality. The P60-million-building is a product of Guico’s dissertation when he pursued his doctorate in public management at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila in 2005. He presented this to then president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, former Speaker of the House Jose de Venecia and other town officials. Soon enough, a local ordinance establishing UEP was approved on Dec. 9, 2005, through a resolution by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Pangasinan. “The whole town is like one big campus,” says Guico. “The center of

activity is the UEP, which is supported by various facilities for students such as our gymnasium, basketball and tennis courts for sports, our garden plaza for conducive gathering and studies, a central transport terminal, a library and community eCenter. All our projects are aligned towards the university town project. Binalonan is an educational haven and gateway for commerce in Eastern Pangasinan.” Further supporting the university town platform is World Citi Colleges (WCC) Aeronautical and Technological College (ATC), which Guico put up on a personal capacity when he was only 29 years old. A licensed pilot and instructor, Guico at a very young age already dreamt of putting his hometown on the Philippine tourism map. “It all started with a hobby. Even when I was young, I was already interested in planes, jets, all kinds of aircrafts. I turned that hobby into a profession right after I graduated from the University of the Philippines,” Mayor Guico, who flew his first aircraft when he was only 23 years old, told the Philippine Star. Thus, in 2005, Guico made Binalonan one of Pangasinan’s tourist drawers with the establishment of an airstrip that served as headquarters to the WCC Aviation Company and the new campus of the WCC Aeronautical School since 2008 after enrolment necessitated for a bigger and more complete facility. So next time you find yourself on a road trip up north, maybe you can squeeze in a few hours to visit this oncesleepy town. Try out the local delicacies, visit a church or two and who knows, maybe even charter a plane ride to see Hundred Islands or the Banaue Rice Terraces from a different perspective: a thousand feet up in the air. If you’re one of those travelers who’s looking beyond the beauty of nature, sand and sea, Daet should be next on your must-go-to destination list. Considered as the gateway to Bicol Region, Daet is 350 kilometres from Manila and can be reached seven to eight hours by land travel. It is a first class municipality and the commercial and government center of Camarines Norte. The name Daet was derived from the Bikol word “dai-daitan” which means “close to each other.” Daet also originated from an ancient Bicol term, “daet” which according to the First Bicol-Spanish Dictionary, Vocabolario dela Lengua Vicol, by Fray Marcos de Lisboa, means “to make friend” or “to be reconciled” According to the Cities and Municipalities Competitiveness Index, an annual ranking of Philippine cities and municipalities developed by the 76

National Competitiveness Council through the Regional Competitiveness Committees (RCCs) with the assistance of the United States Agency for the International Development, Daet ranked #1 in the 2014 Most Competitive Town in the Philippines; it also ranked #18 in economic dynamism and #31 in government efficiency. A Town Rich in History In 1571, a Spanish conquistador Juan de Salcedo arrived at Bicol Region in quest for gold. He then discovered that Daet was already a thriving settlement and noted that the houses were clustered together for reason of safety and protection. On June 1583, a Franciscan Order confirmed the founding of Doctrinas including Daet. Years later, Daet played a significant role not just in the history of Bicol but in the country.

First Jose Rizal Monument One of Daet’s pride is the first Jose Rizal Monument in the Philippines. Erected by voluntary contributions of the people of Camarines Norte led by Lt. Col. Ildefonso Alegre and Lt. Col. Antonio Sanz of the revolutionary army, the monument was unveiled on December 30, 1898. The National Historical Institute in Manila has recently elevated the status of the first-ever Rizal Monument in Daet, Camarines Norte into a National Monument. The Rizal Monument indicates a distinctive design – a threetiered stone pylon with its square base supporting a triangle in two stages. Monument of Martyrs of Camarines Norte This monument was built through the efforts of loving relatives and friends of the martyrs. It was unveiled in 1996 in honor of the “katipuneros” and the great sons of Daet an d neighboring towns who offered their lives to the country during the 1898 Daet Revolt. Pabico Ancenstral Home Built in 1918, this ancestral home boasts a grand staircase with Rococostyle carvings still intact after so many years. The house has been passed on to four generations. It currently serves as an art gallery and archives which is a rich source of knowledge where the young generation can draw inspiration. It is a favorite venue for Tertulla de Daet, an annual event which brings back the memories of Daet through music, fashion and literature. 78

Bulawan Museum Located in the provincial capitol, Bulawan Museum, known as the “Golden Museum,” gives a glimpse of the province’s rich history and culture. It displays a collection of old photos, World War II memorabilia (weapons), portraits of past governors, and busts of local heroes (Gen. Vicente Lukban, Wenceslao Q. Vinzons, Sr., Capt. Tomas M. Zaldua and Lt.-Col. Francisco D. Boayes). It also displays family heirloom pieces (including a collection of kitchen utensils such as silver spoons, fork and butter knife of the late Gov. Miguel Lukban), traditional clothing, a numismatic collection of old coins and paper currency, a collection of shells, pieces of gold jewelry, antique household appliances, paintings and a boya (a round floater attached to a net to keep it afloat).

01 The first Rizal Monument, recently declared as a national monument was constructed in Daet in 1898 inspired by sector commander of the Philippines Revolutionary Forces, Don Antonio Sanz. 02 The first Masonic Lodge in Bicol was founded by Juan Miguel who became its first Worshipful Master. Masonry played a major role in the growth of nationalism among the Bicolanos. In 1879, Juan Miguel and six other prominent men namely Adriano Pajarillo, Pablo del Villar, Ramon Cabezudo, Gregorio Luyon, Diego Liñan and Florentino Peñalosa were arrested and imprisoned by the Spaniards for their nationalist activities. 03 The first Katipunan in Bicol was formally organized in November 1897 by Ildefonso Moreno, a prominent resident of Daet

Pineapple Town Walking along the town proper, one can see a huge pineapple statue. The pineapple symbolizes the province’s prime agricultural product: the “Queen of Formosa” pineapple which is recognized as the country’s sweetest pineapple. It also commemorates the Pinyasan Festival, a nine day festivity that coincides with the celebration of the town’s foundation anniversary. The festival highlights the importance of the Formosa pineapple variety on the lives of the locals, particularly the poor and the Aeta tribe, locally known as “Kabihug.” The Festival, which started in 1993, is considered to be the most colorful festival in Camarines Norte. Aside from promoting the town’s culture, the festival is geared to create tourism leap to boost the local industry to provide the incentive for investment with the emphasis on the development of the local pineapple industry and potential tourist destinations and activities. Mayor Tito Sarion, the man who conceptualized the Pinyasan Festival, is planning to open a Pineapple House Museum. Sarion has more than 300 items with pineapple motifs, ranging from display knickknacks, plates, lanterns, ceiling accents, stuffed toys and kitchen utensils.

04 The first Armed Uprising against the Spaniards in the Bicol Region occurred in Daet. The Daet Revolt was waged by the local Katipuneros from April 14 to 18, 1898. It signaled the beginning of the end of Spanish colonial rule in Bicol. 05 The first Filipino Governor of Ambos Camarines during the American Regime was Don Juan Pimentel of Daet, Camarines Norte. 06 The first National Artist of the Philippines, the great painter Fernando Amorsolo, spent his childhood in Daet, Camarines Norte. 07 Manuel Urbano Conde, the first Filipino to receive a Cannes Festival Award with his film Genghis Khan, was born in Daet, Camarines Norte. 08 The first Tramway (Tranvia) in Bicol if not in the entire Philippines was the A.M. Allen Transporation Company which ran from Daet to the Port of Barra, now the town of Mercedes.

Water & Aerosports Daet is a famous surfing and kite boarding spot as it has a long stretch of beaches, particularly in the town of Bagasbas. Considered the 61st Surfing Destination in the World, the big and wild waves during the months of September to January are ideal for surfing especially for beginners. It is also the home of the Bagasbas Beach International Eco Arts Festival, an annual cultural festivity. The beach could be reached within a ten minute ride on any type of motor vehicle. By its shores stood the provincial rest house, the Aquamarine Park and the Open Pavilion where one can get the panoramic view of the blue Pacific and off-shore islands. It is also the home of the Bagasbas Beach International Eco Arts Festival In the past 2 years, Daet have been conducting the Aerosports Show at the Bagasbas airport. It features exhibition from experts in kite boarding and paragliding.

When To Go

Travelling by land from Manila will take about 8-10 hours. There are daily trips in major buslines from Cubao or Pasay going to Daet. Fare usually costs Php600 for an air-conditioned bus.

There’s no commercial airport in Daet. The closest airport would be Naga City in Camarines Sur. Manila to Naga flight would take about 45 minutes. From Naga, take a van going to Daet for about Php150 and travel time is approximately 2-4 hours.

For surfers and enthusiasts, best time to go to Daet’s Bagasbas Beach is September to January for the big and wild waves. ——— For day trippers, celebrate with the locals every third week of June for the Pinyasan Festival JUNE / JULY 2015

THE UNSPOILED PARADISE OF CAM NORTE —Calaguas Preface If Camarines Sur boasts the internationally known Caramoan group of islands, Camarines Norte takes pride in the unspoiled Calaguas. Dubbed as the “concealed white beach of Bicol”, Calaguas Island is gaining popularity from tourists, especially from backpackers who would want to have a weekend getaway near the Metro. The jump off point to Calaguas Island is Daet, Camarines Norte which is just six to eight hours away from Manila if you’re travelling by land. If you prefer a speedy travel, you can take the 45-minute flight from Manila to Naga, Camarines Sur and just take a van going to Paracle or Vinzons, Camarines Sur; which would take about 4 hours only. Going to the island Calaguas adventure starts with the 2-hour boat ride from the fishport going directly to the island. Boats going to the island can either be rented at Vinzons or Paracle. It is best to leave early morning when the water is calmer and to avoid the low tide at the mangrove-fringed river approaching the sea. It would also be best to visit around January to June when the waves are not that rough. Compared to other boat rides, one must brace themselves for a notable drenching adventure within two hours because the route to Calaguas includes crossing a part of the Pacific Ocean. This means expect bigger and unpredictable waves. Before leaving the port, boat men will secure traveler’s belongings by packing it inside plastic bags and store it in the boat hulls. It’s also a must to have a waterproof pouch to store valuables and to protect gadgets from water splash during the boat ride. When choosing where to seat at the boat, choose the front seat. It’s the most exciting one not just because you’ll get to have a good view of the big waves but also it will also give a thrill of getting soaked. Two hours maybe a bit lengthy but when you arrived at the island it’s all worth it.

Experiencing Pristine Paradise The pristine beach and turquoise sea will greet travelers when they arrive at the island. Mahabang Buhangin (Long Beach) or “Halabang Baybay” (local dialect) is a kilometer long stretch of powdery white sand beach facing the breathtaking Pacific Ocean. Don’t get mistaken, it’s not Boracay. It’s the unspoiled white sand beaches of Calaguas Island. The beach has a number of visitors so one can enjoy beachcombing or just pick any spot to relax. Beach sports are also accessible such as volleyball, frisbee and skim boarding. There are also rock formations that are not just nice to take picture of but travelers can climb and experience. The crystal clear waters are inviting for snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking and more. Loving the Sunset and Sunrise One of the most anticipated time of the day in the island is the picturesque sunset. The view of the sand, sea and sun is truly captivating. But the perfect view lasts only a few minutes, so travelers must make sure to have their cameras ready. Calaguas adventure will not be complete if one will not experience trekking. There are several trails traversing the hilltop. The best time would be early morning to get a spectacular view of the sunrise and the whole island. 90

Disconnecting from the world As people say, sometimes you just need to disconnect and enjoy your own company. Calaguas is the perfect destination to utterly unwind and forget the demanding life back in the Metro. The island is serene since it’s not yet as popular as the other islands in the country. Normally, there is no mobile phone signal in the camping area. But one can walk his way to the edge of the island cove or climbed at the mountain to get a well needed signal if necessary. There are no established hotel and resort accommodations yet in the island. But the experience of beach camping is perhaps what attracts travelers. There are modest comfort rooms in most campsites. The island is certainly not yet commercialized. But for those who would miss the nightlife in the metro, various tour operators and camp sites on the area organize parties. Some

camp sites have acoustic nights, team building activities, and even fire dance entertainment. Unfamiliar to many, Calaguas is truly another up and coming destination in the country. With its fine white sand similar to Boracay and crystal clear water, no doubt more and more tourists will be captivated. Though developments are on its way, hopefully Calaguas can still preserve its pristine paradise.
