Healthcare Changes for "Almost" 26 Year Olds

So, you are about to turn 26?

Are you still on your parents’ health plan?

If so, after you blow out that last candle on your birthday cake it is likely you are about to “age out” of your parents’ health plan, which could be defined as medical, dental, and/or vision.

In some cases, this may be the first time you are enrolling yourself for health insurance.

Depending on your parents’ health plan, you could lose coverage the day you turn 26, at the end of your birthday month, or at the end of the year. Check with your parents in advance of your birthday month to understand your timing.

How do I get health coverage once I’ve aged off my parents’ plan?

GOOD NEWS! Brown & Brown provides healthcare to you at a discounted rate due to the employer contribution made. This means you do not have to worry about shopping the market, and your monthly premiums are taken directly out of your paycheck. You can simply enroll in the plan 30-days from the date of the qualifying life event (i.e., losing health coverage) through ADP for coverage beginning the 1st of the month following your birth date.

I rarely get sick and hardly ever go to the doctor. Do I really need health coverage?

The average cost of an in-office appointment without healthcare coverage can cost upwards of $160 per visit.

And that is just to get you in the door, this doesn’t include any bloodwork, imaging, or other testing. Even though you are young and may not get sick often, it is important to invest in your health and well-being early on.

What are my medical plan options?

Brown & Brown offers a self-funded health plan administered by UnitedHealthcare. The plan offers convenient copays for office visits and prescriptions for easy and low costs for your everyday care needs.

Annual wellness visits are covered at 100%.

Some things to consider during your review of the plan information:

Do you take any prescription drugs on a regular basis? If so, take a look at the list of prescription drugs covered in the plan and which tier your medication is listed paying attention to words such as generic, formulary, and specialty.

Generic is often your lowest cost option, with prices going up from there.

Is there a doctor you have gone to your entire life and absolutely can’t imagine not seeing? A walk-in clinic near your house you often visit for quick health needs? Or an allergy clinic near your office you go to get an allergy shot? You will want to pay attention to these doctors and facilities to be sure they are in-network. Innetwork means that your provider has contracted rates with UnitedHealthcare to keep rates down for your treatment. By staying innetwork, your care will cost you less in the end.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network Examples:

In-Network

If you were to have a catastrophic health issue, could you potentially afford the out-of-pocket maximum? The in-network out-ofpocket maximum is the maximum amount you will pay, inclusive of copayments/coinsurance and deductibles for covered services in a plan year. Once you reach the out-ofpocket maximum during the plan year, the plan pays any remaining eligible services at 100%.

You go to a doctor and the total charge is $250. You get a discount of $75 because you went to an innetwork doctor and the negotiated rate with them is lower. The health plan pays $155 and you pay what's left, which is $20.

Out-of-Network You go to a doctor and the total charge is $250. You won't get a discount because the doctor is out-of-network doctor. The health plan still pays $155, but you will be responsible for what's left, which is $95.

You pay for all your covered medical costs until you hit the deductible. The only exception is the plan copayments.

Stage 2: Coinsurance After hitting your deductible, you enter the next stage.

You now pay only a percentage of your medical costs (with the exception of the plan copayments) and the medical plan pays the rest. This is the coinsurance stage of your plan.

Stage 3: Out-of-Pocket Maximum The coinsurance stage lasts until you reach the out-ofpocket maximum (inclusive of copayments/coinsurance and deductibles). At that point, the plan starts paying for all covered medical costs for the rest of the plan year.
