Composite Deck Collection Guide

Choosing the best composite decking for coastal Virginia — brands, performance & cost.

Veteran-Owned

Why Composite Is the Smart Choice on the Coast

Wood decks can look good when new, but Hampton Roads weather is hard on traditional materials. Humidity, salt air, heat, and intense UV cause wood to split, cup, rot, fade, and demand constant maintenance. Composite decking is a smarter long-term choice — engineered to reduce upkeep while improving durability, appearance, and value.

B&B Decks is a veteran-owned, family-owned company and a TrexPro Certified and TimberTech Pro installer, building custom composite decks throughout Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Suffolk, Portsmouth, Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg, and surrounding coastal Virginia — with our own crew and no subcontractors.

1 Why Homeowners Choose Composite

• Lower maintenance. No annual staining, sealing, or sanding like traditional wood.

• Coastal durability. Capped composite resists moisture, humidity, mold, and everyday weather exposure.

• Premium appearance. Rich colors, realistic grain, and clean finished details.

• Long-term value. A higher upfront investment reduces future repair, maintenance, and replacement costs.

2 Capped vs. Uncapped — the Coastal Difference

The single most important distinction for our climate is the protective cap. First-generation uncapped composite exposed wood fibers to moisture, so it could fade, stain, and grow mold over time — the wrong choice near the water. Modern capped composite wraps the board in a durable polymer shell (three or four sides) that delivers the fade, stain, and mold resistance coastal decks need. Four-sided (fully capped) boards add protection on the underside — worth considering in our high-humidity, near-water conditions.

What makes decking “best” for salt air, humidity & UV

Resists moisture so it won’t swell or rot · shrugs off UV fade for decades · resists mold and stains thanks to the cap · and stays cooler underfoot in lighter tones for a Tidewater July.

3 Trex vs. TimberTech: An Honest Comparison

As a certified installer of both brands, we have no reason to push one over the other. Trex essentially invented modern composite and builds capped-composite boards from a recycled wood-and-plastic core. TimberTech offers capped composite plus a true capped-polymer (PVC) line that contains no wood at all — lighter, cooler, and the most moisture-resistant option.

Which performs better in coastal Virginia? For waterfront or salty, humid micro-climates, TimberTech PVC has the edge because it absorbs no moisture. For full-sun decks with kids or pets, a lighter-colored PVC board stays cooler. For most standard backyards on a sensible budget, capped composite from either brand performs beautifully and delivers excellent value.

4 Advanced PVC & the Full Brand Lineup

Advanced PVC decking is 100% PVC with no wood fibers to rot or swell. It resists stains, mold, and moisture, stays cooler underfoot than many dark composites, and is an excellent pick for pool decks, docks, and waterfront homes. Beyond Trex and TimberTech, B&B Decks helps homeowners compare and install premium lines to match the home, environment, and budget:

• Trex — trusted, recognizable, wide color palette, strong value.

• TimberTech (PRO & AZEK PVC) — premium realism and top moisture resistance.

• Advanced PVC / Wolf Serenity — luxury, lightweight, waterfront-ready.

• WearDeck & MoistureShield — heavy-duty, moisture-resistant for docks & poolsides.

• Deckorators — mineral-based, traction-focused, modern poolside appeal.

• Eva-Last & Fiberon — design-forward and value-conscious composite options.

5 What a Composite Deck Costs in Hampton Roads

New composite decks from B&B Decks start around $68 per square foot installed, complete — framing, composite decking, railings, standard stairs, labor, and permit handling with quality entry-level lines. Premium lines (Trex Transcend, TimberTech AZEK) and features like multi-level layouts, wide stairs, lighting, skirting, or covered structures increase the price. As rough planning examples at the starting rate:

~200 SQ FT

~$13,600

Grills & intimate seating.

~300 SQ FT

~$20,400

Most family backyards.

~400 SQ FT

~$27,200

Dining + lounge zones.

500+ SQ FT

$34,000+ Entertaining & multi-level.

Your exact price depends on size, framing condition, height, railing and board selection, layout complexity, and whether it’s a new build or replacement. Materials typically account for 50–60% of the total, labor the rest. Don’t cut corners on the substructure — in salt air and humidity, a cheap frame fails long before the surface wears out.

6 Repair, Resurface, or Replace?

Not every deck needs full replacement. We offer three paths: deck repair for isolated damage, resurfacing when the frame is sound but the surface is worn, and full composite replacement when it’s time to rebuild. We evaluate the framing, stairs, railings, and connections, explain what can be reused, and recommend the smarter long-term investment. Most replacement projects become composite upgrades because homeowners want lower maintenance, improved durability, and a cleaner outdoor living experience.
