MEETS MODERN GLAZING

THE POWER OF NEW

Balancing natural light and aesthetic design with the demands of energy efficiency, safety and thermal performance is challenging.

In this issue, we explore how the UK’s leading manufacturers and service providers are tackling this head on... delivering daylighting solutions without compromise.

Our cover story addresses the common dilemma of working within a conservation area. Historically, satisfying strict heritage guidelines meant sacrificing thermal performance or aesthetics. On page 8, we look at the launch of Glazing Vision’s Conservation Pitchglaze – a sleek, minimal fixed in-plane roof window reminiscent of the iconic 19th century cast-iron aesthetic.

We also head to Aberdeen to a major £30 million industrial rebuild (pg. 16). This project highlights an issue concerning many rooflight industry professionals – balancing demand for photovoltaic (PV) panels with essential daylighting needs. Brett Martin’s solution offers a blueprint with 2,000m2 of rooflights installed side-by-side with PV cells.

Elsewhere, we celebrate 50 years of Howells Patent Glazing (pg. 18) marked by the launch of their new Horizon Pergola, a premium outdoor living system engineered to withstand the unpredictable British climate.

Behind every rooflight project is a framework of rigorous compliance. To keep you up to date, this issue features updated safety guidance from The Rooflight Association and the NFRC to clarify safe practices on large span metal clad buildings (pg. 14). We also extend our congratulations to Jeremy Dunn, recipient of the inaugural Voice of the Industry award (pg. 9).

Ultimately, what stands out most in this issue is the sheer volume of ‘new’. From groundbreaking product launches and strategic leadership appointments to business investment, this issue paints a positive picture in an undeniably challenging economic climate and period of uncertainty for the construction sector.

Enjoy!

Until next time...

ARCHITECTURE Mixing modern and traditional

Stephen Kavanagh Architects designed a refurbishment for a family-oriented London home. The charming extension is adorned with Skyway Flat Glass Rooflights from Roofglaze.

Grove Hill Road is a property in Camberwell that was entirely revitalised by AKC Europe Ltd based on the collaborative vision of Stephen Kavanagh Architects and their client. The building magnificently stands out amongst its neighbouring structures for the way that it merges a contemporary home design with aspects of the surrounding area, such as the triple archway borrowed from the street facade leading into a sophisticated open-plan kitchen and dining space.

Alongside Grove Hill Road’s extension, the existing parts of the building were also renovated, using contrasting Danish-format brickwork and scalloped tiles on the outside to

create a dynamic and unique family home. Casting a warm glow into the project are Roofglaze Multi-Pane and Electric Vent Rooflights.

Roofglaze Rooflights used for creative displays

As well as illuminating Grove Hill Road’s ground floor extension, one of our rooflights is used to add flair to the brick arches that characterise the property.

As the sun rises and sets throughout the day, the patterns formed by the daylight through our Multi-Pane Rooflight shift. Two silicone glazing joints separate the three sections of this rooflight so that each aligns with the archways.

Opposite the worktop and providing the kitchen island with natural light is another Skyway Multi-Pane Rooflight, which utilises structural glazing bar supports and wall abutment details to best make use of the space at the side of the property. The homeowner’s snug office space on the highest floor features our Electric Vent Rooflight, not only exposing Stephen Kavanagh Architects’ client to sunlight while they work, but also allowing fresh air into the room, keeping their workspace healthy.

Designed and manufactured to last Our Skyway Rooflights offer a premium daylighting solution, perfect for a family house that is sure to be the source of many fond memories.

Delivering performance certainty

FOR COASTAL DEVELOPMENT

Galwad Y Môr is a high-specification residential development in a prime north Wales coastal location, comprising nine three- and four-bedroom townhouses, two four- and five-bedroom semi-detached homes and three affordable twobedroom apartments.

With expansive glazing designed to maximise views across the Conwy Estuary to Anglesey, alongside the challenges of an exposed coastal environment, the project demanded window and door systems that could deliver assured performance, long-term durability and a refined contemporary finish.

Main contractor Marshall CDP appointed Heritage Trade Frames, an Approved Commercial fabricator with over 30 years’ experience, together with specialist installer NR Windows Ltd, ensuring the right expertise was in place from manufacture through to installation.

Designed for compliance and coastal conditions

Profile 22 PVC-U window and door systems, alongside PatioMaster sliding doors, were selected for their ability to meet the stringent technical requirements of the project, reducing specification risk for the developer.

The products achieved air permeability to BS 6375 Part 1 Table 1 (600Pa severe rating), water tightness to BS EN 1027 (600Pa

severe rating) and wind resistance to BS EN 12211 / BS 6375 Part 1 (2400Pa severe rating), providing confidence in performance in exposed coastal conditions.

Specification was further strengthened with highly corrosionresistant austenitic stainless steel hinges, supporting longterm reliability and minimising maintenance requirements in a harsh marine environment.

Maximising value through design and performance

From a design perspective, Profile 22’s sculptured casement windows delivered clean, contemporary sightlines, while PatioMaster sliding doors enabled large glazed openings maximising natural light and enhancing the development’s premium coastal position.

The Anthracite on White finish provides a strong visual contrast aligned with modern architectural trends, supported by an extended colour guarantee of up to 15 years helping protect the long-term appearance and value of the properties.

Across the development, approximately 100 Profile 22 window and door units and PatioMaster sliding doors were installed, alongside composite doors.

New Modular Skylight Dim-out Solution for

ENHANCED DAYLIGHT CONTROL

VELUX Commercial UK&I has launched a new dim-out solution for its VELUX Modular Skylight (VMS) system, providing architects and specifiers with greater control over daylight ingress in commercial rooflight applications where light management is critical.

Designed as an addition to the existing VMS platform, the new solution addresses one of the key challenges associated with rooflight shading systems: light spill around the perimeter of roller blinds. By covering the gap between the blind and the skylight frame, the system helps minimise visible daylight penetration, creating a darker internal environment when required while maintaining the benefits of a modular daylighting solution.

As the role of daylight continues to evolve within contemporary architecture, designers are increasingly tasked with balancing access to natural light with requirements for visual comfort, glare reduction and operational flexibility. Spaces such as educational facilities, healthcare environments, conference rooms,

cultural venues and multi-purpose commercial buildings often require varying levels of daylight control throughout the day, making adaptable shading solutions increasingly important.

The new dim-out solution has been developed specifically to support these project requirements. Using extruded aluminium profiles finished in matt black, the system reduces the visible light gap around the blind perimeter, helping create more effective dim-out conditions without compromising the modular design principles of the VMS range.

Compatible with the standard VMS roller blind (RMM), the solution can be supplied pre-mounted from the factory or retrofitted on site, offering flexibility for both new-build and refurbishment projects.

The system is available across a defined range of module sizes and glazing configurations.

Paul Reid of VELUX Commercial UK&I believes the launch reflects a growing demand for more nuanced approaches to daylight management within commercial buildings. He said: "Daylight remains one of the most valuable resources available to architects and building designers, but there are many situations where controlling that daylight becomes just as important.”

"This solution has been developed to help create greater flexibility within rooflit spaces. It enables designers and building operators to achieve darker conditions when needed, while still benefiting from the architectural and wellbeing advantages that rooflights can provide."

The launch comes at a time when the relationship between daylight, occupant comfort and building performance continues to attract growing attention across the built environment sector. While maximising natural light remains a central design objective, there is increasing recognition that successful daylighting strategies must also address issues such as glare, visual comfort and the changing functional demands placed on interior spaces.

By improving dim-out performance, the new solution allows rooflit environments to better accommodate activities where reduced light levels are beneficial, including presentations, audiovisual use, exhibitions and specialist educational applications.

The development also demonstrates the ongoing evolution of modular daylighting systems, which are increasingly expected to deliver not only daylight and ventilation but also a wider range of environmental control functions. As building owners seek greater adaptability from their assets, integrated solutions that enable spaces to respond to different user requirements are becoming an important consideration during specification.

According to VELUX Commercial UK&I, the dim-out solution has been designed and tested as part of the wider VMS system, ensuring compatibility with existing installation processes and technical guidance.

Installation information is available through the VMS Product Site and Technical Handbook, alongside specification support materials for architects, contractors and building professionals.

Ultra safe composite rooflights and PV panels simultaneously

TARGET SAFETY AND SUSTAINABILITY

At a major recycling facility in Aberdeen, ultra-safe composite rooflights have been installed alongside photovoltaic (PV) panels, combining natural light and renewable energy generation. This dual approach enhances workplace safety by providing durable, impactresistant rooflights while advancing sustainability through clean energy production.

The facility, operated by the SUEZ group, a global leader in water and waste management with over 300 UK locations, underwent a significant £30 million rebuild following severe fire damage in 2022. With exterior works completed in 2025, the refurbished plant now features state-of-the-art machinery that significantly boosts operational efficiency, enabling it to process approximately 60,000 tonnes of mixed recycling annually.

Brett Martin collaborated closely with KR Steel Group on the project, incorporating large areas of both rooflights and PV panels as an integral part of the overall roof design. This demonstrates that it is possible to successfully combine natural lighting with renewable energy systems.

A key safety feature was the use of Brett Martin’s Safelight outer sheet, known for its outstanding safety credentials. This innovation negated the need for extensive and costly guard rails, ensuring safety for the anticipated regular foot traffic required for access and maintenance, while also proving more economical for the client.

Brett Martin was proud to be involved in this project, supporting SUEZ’s commitment to benefiting both the economy and the environment through increased reuse and repair initiatives.

Qualicoat UK & Ireland Charts Future AT HISTORIC CORK MEETING

The second QUALICOAT UK & Ireland council meeting of 2026 successfully took place in the Council Chamber of Cork’s City Hall. This event marks a major milestone as the first since announcing the move to new Secretariat, the Council for Aluminium in Buildings. With many members making the trip from the United Kingdom to Cork, and others joining online, there was a particularly high turnout.

Civic welcome to Cork

The council meeting was preceded by a welcome dinner held the previous evening at the Imperial Hotel and hosted by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Fergal Dennehy, plus an exclusive tour of the Lord Mayor’s Chamber –one of the finest examples of Classical architecture in Ireland and where delegates were invited to sign the distinguished visitors book.

Commenting on the experience, Chair of QUALICOAT UK & Ireland, Chris Mansfield, said: “Fergal was an amazing host and his behind the scenes tour was fascinating. It was a great honour for Jan (Lukaszewski) and I to sign the visitors’ book, sharing the same pages as historical icons like Queen Elizabeth II, President John F. Kennedy and Princess Grace of Monaco.”

Opening speech from the Lord Mayor

In a warm and engaging speech, the Lord Mayor welcomed attendees to the council meeting. “… as a centre for innovation and advanced manufacturing (Qualcomm and Apple both operate from Cork and the city will soon be home to Ireland’s tallest building), we understand the importance of organisations like QUALICOAT in driving and promoting standards and supporting industries that shape the future of our built environment.

“We’re especially proud to welcome delegates from the UK and from all over Ireland […]. Your presence here reflects the importance of collaboration, shared experience and the strong international relationships we have here. Values that are very much at the heart of Cork and our identity as an outward looking city.”

Strategic direction and insights

A major focus of the meeting was the global progression toward QUALICOAT 3.0, an initiative aimed at eliminating field failures by expanding licensing and auditing standards directly to aluminium extruders. Pilot auditing is already underway across three designated plants worldwide to ensure that raw materials meet stricter criteria before reaching the coating stage. In addition, the Technical Committee highlighted ongoing global work regarding the regulation of PFAS ‘forever chemicals’ and gathering data to optimise pre-anodising standards for aluminium sheets and panels.

On the legislative front, the organisation is actively collating member feedback to drive a comprehensive revision of BS EN 12206. Operationally, QUALICOAT UK & Ireland celebrated strong growth with two new licences finalised and four more in progress. Members also received an exclusive overview of QCT 360, a single, bespoke digital certification platform built to replace a fragmented tracking system for coaters, powder suppliers and pre-treatment suppliers.

Technical excellence

To make the most of the expertise of visitors like independent inspector, Oliver Bögler and Jim Regan from Q-Lab Europe, Ltd., QUALICOAT UK & Ireland held an additional technician training event on 19th May hosted by Architectural & Metal Systems (AMS) in Wallingstown, Co. Cork. This provided a vital local opportunity for Irish members to maintain the prestigious quality label.

Gratitude and appreciation for Irish hosts

During the meeting QUALICOAT UK & Ireland extended its gratitude to the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Fergal Dennehy and the City Hall team for their support and hospitality, and to Pat O’Hara Managing Director of AMS – a long-established QUALICOAT-certified applicator, for suggesting that the meeting be held in Cork and at City Hall.

Hambleside Danelaw Limited is a highly respected business with a long-standing reputation for quality, technical expertise and innovation across the construction sector, and I’m very excited to be joining such a well-established and successful company.

“I would also like to recognise the significant contribution of Chris Avery, who has led the business as Managing Director for many years. Chris has played an important role in building the strong foundations and reputation that Hambleside Danelaw Limited enjoys today, and I’m very pleased that he will continue to support the business going forward.

“In the short term I am looking forward to meeting colleagues, customers and suppliers as we build on the strong base currently in place at Hambleside Danelaw Limited.”

2026 marks the 50th anniversary of Hambleside Danelaw Limited, and they have been fortunate to have had a steward such as Chris, who came on board in 1987. Chris worked with recruitment specialist Berwick Partners to handpick his successor.

Reflecting on his time with Hambleside Danelaw Limited, Chris said “I would like to welcome Antony as the new Managing Director of Hambleside Danelaw Limited, and I wish him every success. Antony brings a wealth of experience as a Managing Director and has strong knowledge of building merchants. I look forward to working with him to continue the company as I remain on the Board of Directors as Chairman. I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenges of the last 40 years, but now it is time to hand over the reins.”

British museum, Great court

In this regular feature we indulge ourselves and our readers with images of daylighting projects throughout the years that simply deserve a double page photograph...

Designed by Norman Foster, whose work often emphasises light, transparency and innovative use of glass structures.

The British Museum Great Court uses a vast glass roof to act as a continuous rooflight, flooding the central space with soft, natural daylight. Its geometric glazing diffuses sunlight evenly, reducing glare while illuminating the interior without heavy reliance on artificial lighting.

YOUR HOME your design, your build

The National Self Build & Renovation Centre (NSBRC) is the UK'S only permanent venue for independent homebuilding advice & support.

Established in 2007, we have helped a quarter of a million visitors build their own dream home or extend and improve existing properties.

Located on J16 of the M4, Swindon, our unique venue, covering 67,000ft2, features several full-size houses, interactive educational zones – incorporating many life-size exhibits – and a huge ‘Trade Village’ with over 200 specialist exhibitors, showcasing the very best products and technologies.

Experts on our free helpdesk (staffed Wednesday to Sunday) are here to discuss visitors plans and ideas, share their experience, and signpost people to relevant professionals and suppliers who can help make their project a success.

Aside from being open six days a week, we produce a full calendar of shows, themed workshops and courses covering key topics, from plot finding and planning to funding and heating options.

We run several ‘eco’ events including our popular Eco Workshops and our Passivhaus Workshop’s produced in partnership with the Passivhaus Trust.

The NSBRC was named Wiltshire’s small business of the year in 2017 and in the same year won a Build It award for Outstanding Contribution to Self Build. In 2021 we won the Employee Ownership Association’s award for Business Resilience following our response to the pandemic.

We believe people deserve better, sustainable homes. We help achieve this by delivering our three key promises:

• We’ll inspire you by showcasing the very best building methods, trends and technologies.

• We’ll inform you with our range of shows, workshops, courses and educational tours.

• We’ll always offer impartial advice you can trust.

Did you know?

In November 2014 a new company was formed to operate the National Self Build & Renovation Centre. This business (The Homebuilding Centre Limited) is employee owned. Our team of employee-owners have a genuine stake in the business via our ‘hybrid’ ownership model.

We have a combination of shares held by our Employee Ownership Trust (our largest share-holder), direct share-holders (all held by employees) and a Share Incentive Plan.

This model allows us to reward our team well, and to share part of our profit if we collectively feel we want to. More importantly, perhaps, the culture that employee-ownership inevitably brings, allows us to work

with openness and transparency, sharing ideas and feedback in a caring environment. We are passionate about providing the best experience for our visitors, exhibitors and conferencing guests.

We were thrilled to receive our 500th Google review in April 2023, and we are currently averaging a score of 4.7/5, which we hope reflects the experience that people enjoy with us.

The NSBRC is open six days a week for visitors. Our standard opening hours are: Tuesday - Saturday: 10:00am - 17:30pm • Sunday: 10:00am - 16:30pm • www.nsbrc.co.uk
