Ishare a simple, memorable encounter that leaves a lasting impression on me, while I was in the Male Hostels. I met a pleasant young medical student wearing what Gen Z calls three-quarters and headphones. Curious, I asked if there was power in his room. He greeted me respectfully. Calmly, he answered, "Yes, Sir, but it's not stable." Encouraged by his politeness, I asked, half joking and half concerned, if he tampered with the power by running bypass wires. He smiled and said, "No, Sir. But those who do usually get away with it. Those of us who obey the rules go without air conditioning. That's how it is in Nigeria, Sir. Lawbreakers get away with it; law-abiding citizens suffer."
At that moment, I saw not only intelligence in him but a reflection of a deeper national concern. There was a frustration that many young Nigerians silently carry. This brilliant and promising student was already disillusioned by injustice and unfairness. I knew then that I owed him, and others like him, an explanation. I must use every opportunity to clarify why it should not remain so. Experience alone fully teaches us that laws are not meant to frustrate. They preserve the order, stability, and fairness that help society thrive. The value of law is not always immediate. Often, its benefits are invisible, like the unseen roots of a tree that give strength and life.

When rules inconvenience you, they build discipline. When they regulate and deny you comfort, they may protect a greater good. When an institution insists on procedure, it ensures fairness, not to stop progress. Great universities must teach these lessons beyond the classroom. Our society often admires those who find shortcuts or outsmart the system. But history proves that slow, honest builders succeed. Nations collapse not for want of talent or resources, but when their brightest lose faith in the rule of law. Collapse follows when indiscipline becomes the path to success.
I say this with conviction: Nigeria needs new leaders anchored in ethics, fairness, and courage. You are not just graduating; you inherit the duty to restore faith in doing things right. Prove that integrity is not weakness, patience is not foolishness, and order is not oppression. Every time you refuse to cheat or insist on merit, and each time you choose service over selfishness, you help rebuild Nigeria's moral foundation. It will not always be easy, but that is how nations rise, through the small, steady acts of principled citizens.
Our world changes rapidly. Technology leads, inequality challenges, and insecurity test us. Even so, ethical leadership, sound reasoning, and discipline remain ever relevant. True education is not just about passing exams or earning titles. It is about building the strength to do what is right, even when no one is watching. At Baze University, we value not just what students know but what they become. We want you to be thinkers with conscience, innovators with empathy, and professionals with integrity. As you begin your next journey, let these values guide you. Lawbreakers may seem to win today. But law-abiding citizens build society's true foundation. One who cuts corners may arrive faster. The upright leaves a lasting legacy. Those who follow rules, even when it is hard, become vessels of trust. Trust earned this way is more valuable than gold.
To all our graduates, especially the pioneering PhD group, I offer my heartfelt congratulations. You represent our vision's hope and continuity. You prove that hard work, when guided by principle, brings lasting success. As you move forward, remember: your real certificate is not the paper, but the one engraved in your character. Let your excellence be ethical, your ambition humane, and your success shared with the society that raised you. One day, you may meet a young person who says, "Lawbreakers get away with it." Please take time, as I have, to explain that integrity's reward is always greater than the thrill of wrongdoing. That is how nations are healed and greatness begins, one honest conversation at a time. Congratulations, Class of 2025. Go forward with courage, wisdom, and grace.

Mrs.
er Excellency Amina Jane Mohammed, GCON, is a distinguished Nigerian-British diplomat, politician, and global development icon who currently serves as the 5th Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and Chair of the United Nations Sustainable Development Group.
Born on 27 June 1961 in Liverpool, England, to a Fulani Nigerian father and a British mother, she is the eldest of five daughters. Her formative years spanned Kaduna and Maiduguri in Nigeria, the Isle of Man's Buchan School, and Henley Management College, where she pursued management studies.

Her Excellency began her professional journey in architecture and development consultancy, working at Archcon Nigeria from 1981 to 1991, before founding AfriProjects Consortium, where she served as Executive Director until 2001. Driven by a passion for inclusive development, she played a defining role in shaping the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), serving as Coordinator of the UN Task Force on Gender and Education (2002–2005), and later as Senior Special Assistant to the President of Nigeria on the MDGs. Her leadership in negotiating and directing Nigeria's debt-relief gains toward poverty reduction and sustainable development earned her international acclaim.
A globally respected policy thinker, she established the Centre for Development Policy Solutions and taught as an adjunct professor in Columbia University's Master's in Development Practice programme. She also served on several prominent UN panels, including the Secretary-General's High-Level Panel on the Post-2015 Development Agenda and the Independent Expert Advisory Group on the Data Revolution for Sustainable Development, and chaired the Advisory Board of UNESCO's Global Monitoring Report on Education.
From November 2015 to February 2017, she served Nigeria with distinction as the Honourable Minister of Environment, championing climate action, environmental governance, and sustainable development. She also represented Nigeria on the African Union Reform Steering Committee, chaired by H.E. President Paul Kagame.
In 2017, Her Excellency Amina J. Mohammed assumed the office of Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, becoming the highest-ranking Nigerian and one of the most influential African women on the global stage. In this role, she leads efforts to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, mobilises international partnerships, and advances multilateral action on climate change, peace, gender equality, and inclusive growth.
Beyond her official capacities, she is a devoted mother, mentor, and champion of women's empowerment, youth leadership, and participatory global governance.
Her Excellency Amina J. Mohammed stands as a visionary diplomat, reformer, and advocate for sustainable development, a trailblazer whose leadership continues to shape Nigeria's development landscape and the global pursuit of peace, prosperity, and sustainability.

His Excellency Julius Maada Wonie Bio (born 12 May 1964) is a distinguished Sierra Leonean statesman, soldier, and reform-minded leader who has served as the 5th President of the Republic of Sierra Leone since 4 April 2018. A retired Brigadier of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, President Bio holds a singular place in his nation's history as the young military leader who, at age 32, briefly chaired the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC) in 1996 and oversaw Sierra Leone's return to multiparty democracy.
An ethnic Sherbro and a practising Roman Catholic, President Bio was born in Tihun, Bonthe District, during the administration of Prime Minister Sir Albert Margai. The son of Paramount Chief Charlie Bio II, he was raised in a large polygamous family of 35 children He received his early education in Tihun and Pujehun before attending the prestigious Bo School, where he distinguished himself as a student leader. He later pursued a military career and would go on to earn advanced degrees in International Affairs and Peace Studies from American University in Washington, D.C., and the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom.

President Bio began his military service in 1985 at the Benguema Military Academy. As a young officer, he served with distinction in the ECOMOG peacekeeping mission during the First Liberian Civil War. He later became Chief of Defence Staff under Chairman Valentine Strasser and, in January 1996, assumed leadership of the NPRC. Demonstrating uncommon foresight and commitment to democratic governance, he peacefully transitioned Sierra Leone to civilian rule later that year, handing power to President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah following free and fair elections—an act widely regarded as a defining moment of statesmanship.
Following his retirement from the military, Bio relocated to the United States, where he worked in consultancy and investment management. He returned to public life in 2005, emerging as a key figure in the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP). After an initial presidential bid in 2012, he was elected President in 2018 and re-elected in 2023.
As Head of State, President Bio has championed transformative reforms aimed at inclusive development and national renewal. His flagship Free Quality School Education (FQSE) initiative has expanded access to education for millions of children, marking one of the most ambitious social investments in Sierra Leone's modern history. His administration abolished the death penalty, advanced gender justice through the landmark Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment Act (2023) mandating 30% female representation in public leadership, declared a national emergency on sexual and gender-based violence, and strengthened accountability and anticorruption frameworks.
On the regional and global stage, President Bio is a passionate advocate for education, peace, and democratic governance In June 2025, he was unanimously elected Chairman of the Economic CommunityofWestAfricanStates(ECOWAS), further affirming his leadership in West African diplomacy.
President Bio is married to Her Excellency Fatima Maada Bio, a Gambian-Sierra Leonean actress, humanitarian, and advocate for women and children. Their interfaith marriage, celebrated in 2013, symbolises Sierra Leone's tradition of religious tolerance. They are blessed with children and jointly promote initiatives in education, gender empowerment, and social welfare.
In recognition of his service and visionary leadership, he has received numerous honours, including the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Pioneers of Liberia (2019) and honorary doctorates from international institutions.
Today, His Excellency Julius Maada Bio is celebrated as a soldier-turned-statesman, reformer, and advocate of inclusive governance, guiding Sierra Leone along a path of peace, dignity, and sustainable national progress.

DIOMAYE FAYE, PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF SENEGAL
Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye was born on 25 March 1980 in Ndiaganiao, a rural community in the M'Bour department of Senegal, approximately 150 kilometres from Dakar. Raised in modest circumstances, he began his education at Marie Médiatrice Catholic School in his hometown before attending Lycée Demba Diop in Mbour, where he earned his baccalaureate in 2000.
Faye continued his education at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, graduating with a Master's degree in Law. He subsequently enrolled at the prestigious École Nationale d'Administration (ENA) in Dakar, where he trained as a tax inspector, an experience that significantly shaped his views on governance, equity, and the judicious management of public resources.

He began his professional career as a tax inspector, distinguished by his diligence and principled stance on public finance. His commitment to integrity and transparency led him to active involvement in the Autonomous Union of Tax and Domain Agents, where he rose to a leadership role and earned a reputation as a steadfast advocate for ethical governance.
Faye's political trajectory began with his membership in PASTEF – Les Patriotes (African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity), founded in 2014 by Ousmane Sonko. His influence within the party grew steadily, culminating in his appointment as Secretary-General in October 2022.
In 2023, amid heightened political tensions, Faye was arrested and charged with defamation and contempt of court after criticising judicial proceedings linked to Sonko's legal challenges. Later that year, the Senegalese government dissolved PASTEF, alleging its involvement in violent protests, a move that amplified Faye's profile as a symbol of opposition to state repression.
With Sonko barred from contesting the 2024 presidential election, PASTEF nominated Faye as its candidate. Campaigning from prison, he won widespread support, particularly among Senegal's youth, who viewed him as both the custodian of Sonko's vision and an emerging leader in his own right. On 14 March 2024, ten days before the rescheduled vote, Faye was released under a general amnesty. His campaign slogan, “Diomaye mooy Sonko” (“Diomaye is Sonko”), resonated powerfully with voters.
The election of 24 March 2024 delivered a resounding victory: Faye secured 54.28 per cent of the vote in the first round, becoming, at age 44, the youngest President in Senegal's history. He was sworn in on 2 April 2024 and appointed Ousmane Sonko as Prime Minister shortly thereafter.
President Faye represents a new generation of political leadership grounded in principles of sovereignty, transparency, and systemic reform. His agenda includes:

• Renegotiating oil, gas, and mining contracts to ensure equitable national benefit; reassessing the future of the CFA franc; and declaring the withdrawal of foreign military bases from Senegal by 2025.
• Combating corruption, strengthening accountability, and instituting institutional reforms.
• Addressing unemployment and rising living costs while restoring hope to Senegal's predominantly youthful population.
In September 2024, he dissolved the National Assembly and called snap legislative elections to secure a cohesive governing mandate. By November 2024, PASTEF had won more than threequarters of parliamentary seats, consolidating its political authority.
Despite his rapid rise, President Faye remains rooted in his rural upbringing and personal values. He is a practising Muslim, married in a polygamous union to Marie Khone Faye and Absa Faye, and father to several children. Away from statecraft, he enjoys martial arts, psychology, literature, reggae music, and football, particularly Real Madrid.
Faye's journey, from village life to incarceration and ultimately to the presidency, has captivated audiences across Africa and beyond. His leadership is widely seen as heralding a generational and structural transformation in Senegalese politics, reflecting popular aspirations for dignity, justice, and national sovereignty. As he often affirms, his mission extends beyond governing to “restoring trust between the state and the people”—a commitment that continues to define his evolution on the national and global stage.

PROTOCOLS
INTRODUCTION
It is with profound joy, gratitude, and a deep sense of accomplishment that I welcome you all to the 12th Convocation Ceremony of Baze University, Abuja. It is also in the spirit of the diversity of our university, which I represent, that I warmly welcome all our distinguished guests to this ceremony.
Today, we gather to celebrate excellence, perseverance, and transformation. This convocation is not merely a ceremony; it is a celebration of dreams realized, of knowledge acquired, and of a journey from potential to achievement. On behalf of the Senate, Management, and the entire Baze University community, I extend hearty congratulations to the Class of 2025 on reaching this remarkable milestone.
Dear graduands, today is your day; a day to rejoice in your hard work, resilience, and determination. Over the years, you have faced challenges, embraced learning, and demonstrated the character and discipline that Baze University stands for.
You are leaving this university as ambassadors of integrity, creativity, and excellence; these are significant values our institution holds dear. As you go forth, remember that your education is a tool for service, not just a ticket to success. The certificate which you have so deservedly earned will open doors for you, but to remain relevant, you must be diligent, honest, committed, and resourceful. The world awaits your ideas, your leadership, and your compassion.
I especially recognize our pioneer PhD graduands; we are proud of you all, as many of you have had to overcome all odds to achieve this milestone. The important lesson here is that it is never too late to pursue your dreams; just believe in yourself and keep your eyes on the goal.
To the parents, guardians, and sponsors, we say thank you. Thank you for your sacrifices, your prayers, and your unwavering support that have sustained these young men and women through their academic journey. To our dedicated faculty and staff, we appreciate you. Thank you for your intellectual commitment and mentorship that remain the lifeblood of this institution and define our brand. Undoubtedly, history will be kind to you as you nurture minds and shape the future generation of leaders.
To the University Board of Trustees, the Council, the Management and the Senate, I express deep appreciation for your guidance, diligence, and teamwork in ensuring that Baze University continues to uphold the highest standards of academic excellence. Our brand is strong, and we will leave no stone unturned to make it even stronger.
Since the take-off of Baze University in 2011, it has remained guided by the vision of the Founder (Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed) to provide robust education that combines global best practices with Nigerian

content and relevance. From modest beginnings, we have grown into one of Nigeria's most respected private universities; a hub for research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Baze University has become a Centre of excellence driven by three major components: People (staff), Technology and Products (students).
- Robust complement of staff who drive all our academic and administrative tasks are sourced from every part of Nigeria and the diaspora; we search, nurture and celebrate talents. Our university has a rich blend of industry professionals and academia in all Departments. The Baze Brand is strong; our goal is clear, and our focus is to remain globally competitive and produce employable graduates that can deploy advanced technology to drive national development. We remain committed to this.
Baze University ranks high as students' first choice among private universities in Abuja because of our strong reputation for academic excellence, modern learning environment, and commitment to producing competitive graduates. The university offers high-quality teaching delivered by experienced local and international faculty, supported by well-equipped laboratories, libraries, and ICT facilities that enhance practical learning. The diverse and inclusive campus culture, combined with a focus on innovation, entrepreneurship, and character development, makes Baze University an attractive choice for students seeking a holistic education. Additionally, our strategic location in Abuja provides access to internship opportunities, professional exposure, and strong industry linkages that prepare students for successful careers both in Nigeria and abroad.

Nigeria stands today at a challenging crossroads, facing unemployment, insecurity, and economic restructuring. Yet, in these challenges lie opportunities for innovation and reform. Universities must therefore serve as engines of knowledge and transformation. We must not only teach what is known but also challenge what appears impossible.
At Baze University, we believe that higher education should empower young people to be problem-solvers, ethical leaders, and agents of positive change We align our curriculum with national and global developmental priorities, emphasizing entrepreneurship, digital literacy, climate responsibility, and civic

engagement.
At Baze University, we take our students beyond the classroom to the world of work, providing them with experiential learning; this is our hallmark. For example, students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering are currently working in the Team that fabricate the Beds used in our Hostels; the students in the Faculty of Environmental Sciences were part of the Team that designed and built the Baze University Hospital and the Laboratories and some of them are currently involved in the design, costing and construction of the School of Postgraduate Studies.
Education is one of the most potent tools for personal and national development. Education equips people with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to achieve their potential and contribute meaningfully to society. When parents invest in education through financial support, emotional encouragement, and active involvement, they help foster discipline, confidence, and lifelong learning habits.
All available research shows that parental commitment improves academic achievement, reduces school dropout rates, and enhances children's social and emotional development. Beyond individual benefits, such investment strengthens the human capital base of nations, promoting innovation, productivity, and sustainable development. Parents must remain committed to investing in their children's future through education, as this remains the key to a better life. In life, acquiring properties is good, but when we build human capacities, it is better. At Baze University, we recognize the importance of investing in education; so, we provide quality education to our students and remain committed to their academic success.
Good parenting has profound and lasting effects on children's overall development. It provides the emotional, social, and moral foundation upon which children build their future behaviour, relationships, and achievements. Children raised in nurturing, supportive, and structured environments tend to develop higher self-esteem, better emotional regulation, and stronger social skills.
Effective parenting is characterized by love, consistency, positive discipline, and open communication, and this in turn promotes academic success, psychological well-being, and resilience against negative peer influence. It also fosters empathy, responsibility, and respect for others. Research has shown that children who experience positive parenting are more likely to become confident, responsible adults who contribute productively to society
Conversely, neglectful or inconsistent parenting often leads to behavioural problems, poor academic performance, and emotional instability. Therefore, good parenting remains a key determinant of a child's long-term success and happiness. I urge parents not to leave the task of parenting to educational institutions, as good upbringing starts from home. Give them your presence and not presents. I appeal to parents not to overlook basic home training for their children to ease our supervisory efforts in delivering our tasks while acting in loco parentis.
The University community mourns the demise of the following persons:

Mallam Mouftah Baba-Ahmed (the senior brother to our Founder and Chancellor) was an amiable person; he had soothing words of wisdom for everyone, he was loved and admired. Prof. Joy Ogwu was a former member of the Baze University Board of Trustees, who contributed immensely to the university's growth and reputation during its early years.
We remember the lives and legacies of all our departed staff; their dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment leave indelible marks. We celebrate the profound impact they made on students and the enduring values they have left behind. To the departed students, we remember their quest for education and their resolve for a better life. May the souls of all the departed rest in perfect peace. May God console all their families.
As you leave the gates of Baze University, carry with you the values that define us: integrity, innovation, and service. The world you are entering is dynamic and competitive, but your education has prepared you well. Be courageous. Be resilient. Let your ideas illuminate dark corners. Let your compassion humanize the systems you will work in. Remember, true success is not measured only by wealth or status, but by the impact you make on others and the difference you bring to your community.
Let me express my deep gratitude to Her Excellency Amina J. Mohammed for accepting the Chairperson at this Convocation, and even when the exigencies of duty did not permit physical presence, she demonstrated absolute commitment to our request by sending a recorded message. I thank His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Dr Julius Maada Bio, for accepting our invitation as the Commencement Speaker; we are indeed grateful. I particularly appreciate the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Ahmed Umar, who, in spite of the exigencies of his schedule, offered us tremendous guidance on the protocols for receiving our international visitors. We thank Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, our Founder and Chancellor, for his unwavering vision, integrity, and commitment to educational excellence. His leadership continues to inspire us to aim higher and deliver world-class education in Nigeria. I thank our guests, sponsors for their support, encouragement, and goodwill. To our esteemed parents, Vice Chancellors from sister institutions and friends of the university, your partnership and faith in Baze University are deeply appreciated.
Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, today's convocation reminds us that education remains the greatest investment in human capital and the most sustainable path to national renewal. Let us therefore recommit ourselves to nurturing minds that will build a Nigeria where merit thrives, knowledge leads, and integrity governs. Once again, congratulations to the Class of 2025 Go into the world and make Baze University proud.
Thank you.

5. The Order of Proceedings (OOP) will be distributed to all graduands before the commencement of the academic procession on the Convocation Day.
6. Academic outfits must be returned immediately after the ceremony or no later than 13th November 2025, to the Representative of the Dean, Students' Affairs, at the Academic Outfit Room in the Multipurpose Hall. Late return attracts a penalty of 2,000.00 (Two Thousand Naira) per day.
7. Graduands who fail to return their academic outfits or pay the BUAA levy will not be issued their Students' Transcripts until full compliance is confirmed.
8. All graduands are to assemble and robe at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences by 8:00 a.m. before proceeding in procession to the Abdulsalami Abubakar Multipurpose Hall. Only graduands in full academic regalia will be allowed to join the procession.

a. First-degree graduands: The tassel (cord) should hang on the right side of the cap before admission.

b. Upon the Chancellor's declaration - “I admit you all” - graduands should move their tassels from the right to the left, symbolising admission into the body of graduates.
11. The procession will be arranged in Divisions, grouped by Faculties, each led by a senior representative of the Registrar's Office.
12. Graduands must be seated in their designated Faculty sections within the Hall.
13. Higher degree recipients (Master's, PhD, etc.) should wear their tassels to the left from the start, indicating prior degree conferral.
14. During the ceremony, female graduands are to show courtesy (a slight bow or nod) when greeting the Chancellor or other dignitaries. In contrast, male graduands should bow respectfully without removing their caps.
15. Unauthorised movement and photography are strictly prohibited within the Convocation Hall. The use of mobile phones is also restricted for all during the ceremony.
16. Only accredited photographers will be permitted to operate in designated campus areas during the Convocation Ceremony. Accreditation must be obtained from the Chief Security Officer (CSO) by 6th November 2025.
17. Media organisations wishing to cover the ceremony must also obtain prior accreditation from the CSO before 6th November 2025.
18. All graduands and guests are to stand during the academic procession, the National Anthem, and the University Anthem. Graduands are expected to remain orderly and seated until the official closing of the ceremony.
19. Graduands should proceed to their Faculty Homecoming venues after the main Convocation ceremony, where their degree certificates will be officially issued.
20. Collection of certificates by proxy is strictly prohibited.
21. Documentation for Certificate Collection will take place between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 5th to 7th, 2025.
22. To collect certificates, graduands must present: Original Student ID Card and a photocopy; and sign and thumbprint in the presence of their Head of Department (HoD) and Dean to confirm proper documentation.
23. Faculties will organise brief Homecoming ceremonies, including processions in academic regalia. Graduands are advised to keep their gowns clean and presentable for this occasion.
24. Food and refreshments shall not be served at the Homecoming ceremony.
