WARREN NATHANIEL SCOTT May 28, 1935 - December 13, 2016 January 5, 2017 • 2:00pm Angelus Funeral Home 3875 South Crenshaw Blvd Los Angeles, California
OBITUARY WARREN NATHANIEL SCOTT was a quiet, kind and humble man. He was the seventh son born to Floyd and Arletta Scott in McNab, Arkansas, on May 28, 1935. All his 12 siblings – 11 brothers and one sister, affectionately known as “Sister” – proceeded him in death. His father, Floyd Scott worked for the railroads, traveled often and died in a train accident when Warren was a teenager. Warren described his childhood as hard, but he always had the necessities. His mother was a school teacher and wonderful seamstress and quilter. She often sold her creations and provided gifts to her children and grandchildren. She eventually came to live with Warren in Los Angeles. Warren loved his family and maintained close relationships with his mother and siblings until their deaths. He remained supportive “Uncle Nay” to nieces and nephews until his death. “Nay,” as he was affectionately known to family, traveled around Arkansas playing basketball until he graduated from high school. Upon graduation, he – along with several of his brothers – left the segregated south and moved to Los Angeles, California. Warren continued to play basketball with his brothers and cousins in recreation leagues until his late 20s. He met Eunice Steen Witherspoon McFadden at a dance in Los Angeles. Eunice was from Washington, Arkansas – a town not too far from McNab, Arkansas. They married on February 16, 1958.
Warren was a loving father and husband to his wife and three children: Carol Scott Berry; Dennis Ray Scott; and Ann Yvette Scott. The family traveled to Arkansas every summer to spend the Fourth of July with their families. It was in Arkansas, with Eunice and her parents and siblings, where Warren learned the art of fishing. Warren loved fishing, and Saturday fishing at Redondo Beach Pier in California became a family ritual for more than 10 years. The Scott Family attended Deliverance Temple Holiness Church where Eunice Scott eventually became the pastor. Warren accepted his wife’s ministry without hesitation, contrary to the norms of men of his generation. Warren humbly served as Deacon until Eunice’s death in 1995. God blessed Warren and Eunice to travel throughout the country by car, train, cruise ship and plane, experiencing new adventures and enjoying the fruits of their hard work.
School and neighborhood friends loved “Mr. Scott.” Many traveled with the family on vacations, to the beach, fishing, Disneyland, the State Fair, and Dodgers and Lakers games. Whatever he provided for his children he also provided for their friends. Neighbors and friends envied his children just because he was their dad. Warren always worked at least two jobs and furthered his education by attending community college at night. His primary job was with the City of Los Angeles for 37 years in different positions. He worked under the direction of Mayor Tom Bradley, eventually reaching the rank of Supervisor of Street Maintenance for the Hyperion Plant. Warren received several commendations and recognitions for his work at the City. Warren also worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District, U.S. Post Office, County Elections, U.S. Census and delivering phone books, just to name a few. Warren successfully provided for his family, putting his daughter Carol through University of Southern California and Arizona State University College of Law. One of the happiest days of his life was participating in the robing ceremony at Carol’s investiture as Judge of the Phoenix Municipal Court in 2001. His daughter Ann has a long standing career in the legal field as an Enterprise Content and Records Manager. His son Dennis is loved and respected in his community as an entrepreneur who owns his own bike business. Warren had the pleasure of attending several graduations of his children and grandchildren, including his grandson Bryson Scott’s graduation from Arizona State University. Warren retired in 1996 and thoroughly enjoyed pursuing his hobbies: traveling; fishing; and barbecuing. He often drove from Los Angeles to Phoenix, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana and Las Vegas. His barbecue became legendary everywhere he traveled. Phoenix family and friends just had to hear that he was in town and found their way to the Berry home to enjoy his cooking. Warren united with Virginia Johnson of Arkansas around 2006. Warren continued fishing, traveling and barbecuing. A highlight of his life was family Carnival Cruises during 2015 and 2016 with his children and friends. Warren always provided words of wisdom to family and friends. His most memorable saying was “Thank God for your mind,” which God graciously allowed him to keep until his death. Warren will be missed by: his children Carol Scott Berry (Virgil Jackie), Dennis Ray Scott (Colleen Coleman) and Ann Yvette Scott (Teddy Hunter); grandchildren Kevin Ray Jones, Bryson Dennis Scott, Joshua Scott, Jacquelyn Grace Berry and Virgil Berry III (L.J.); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
