Obituary

Dr. Donald Russell Campbell was born September 14, 1935 – one of nine siblings – in Elizabeth, Louisiana, to John Estes and Luvenia Campbell. In 1945, the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, and soon afterwards both parents died. Working as a teenager to support himself, Don graduated from high school and went on to earn an associate’s degree Phoenix College. He later earned a bachelor’s in political science and a master’s in education from Arizona State University. He continued his graduate education and earned a doctorate in business management. During this time Don met and married his wife of 54 years, Doris Holsey, in 1960. Doris preceded Don in death in October 2014. From that union were born their two sons, Darren and Derek. Unfortunately, the couple lost both children at early ages. Don became the first African American to enlist in the Arizona Air National Guard and retired after 26 years as a lieutenant colonel from the United States Air Force. Always one to stay busy, during that time Don also was elected to the Roosevelt School Board and then Governing Board of Maricopa County Community College District in 1982, serving for 29 years. A few of those years he served as Board president. Having received numerous awards including City of Phoenix Human Relations Commission’s Dr. Martin Luther King Living the Dream Award, Don was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi and a NAACP Golden Heritage Life member. Don still found time to do other community activities, such as Arizona Project Challenge, Boy Scouts of America and Mentor Kids USA. Don remained active at the church he and Doris loved so much – Southminster Presbyterian in South Phoenix. Don and Doris traveled all over the world. They visited China, Germany, France and other places. He was looking forward to going to Africa soon. In 2009, Don authored a book titled Tough Life? So What! Move Beyond The Struggle. In the book Don shared that even though life my give you some lemons, you can still have lemonade. Until his passing, Don loved going to the Salvation Army KROC Center to work out and converse with friends. He also enjoyed going to the Travis L. Williams American Legion Post 65 to share stories, the programs and good food. Preceding him in death are his parents; wife, Doris; siblings, Cloves Sr., Charles, John, Walter, Carol, Alvie, Mabel; and children, Darren and Derek. Dr. Donald R. Campbell leaves to cherish his brother Roland Campbell Sr., (Eleanor) of Phoenix, Arizona, and a host of grand nieces, grand nephews, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Farewell

Friend Brother Mentor Uncle

Im Free

Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free, I'm following the path God laid for me. I took his hand when I heard his call, I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day, To laugh, to love, to work, to play. Tasks left undone must stay that way, I've found that peace at the close of the day. If my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, Ah yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My Life's been full, I savoured much, Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch, Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, Don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me, God wanted me now, He set me free.
