Welcome to the Celebration!

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. one of America’s very best citizens loved this country and the foundations on which it stands. He grieved for those lost and mistreated in the creation and maintenance of our democracy and quest for equality. Dr. King prayed and meditated at length on the day when current and future generations would truly love each other and judge persons by the content of their character, not the color of their skin, and support equality and freedom for all.

This year, 2020, marks 34 years of celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. – a blessed man who gave us hope and inspired us to see beyond today and ourselves. We, the living, are truly given the opportunity to initiate a generation of positive, necessary and lasting change. At this time we are challenged to recognize our neighbors and friends as brothers and sisters – not just for a few days of celebration but for the seen and unseen future. Dr. King moved mountains for us. The mountainside may still be steep, but the road to reach the pinnacle has been paved through the work, life and death of the man we honor and remember at this time.

During the past year, we lost many of our friends, family and neighbors and are hard pressed to maintain a posture of advocates for peace and justice. But, hold fast we must, and in the memorable words of Dr. Nelson Mandela: “Let the striving of us all prove Martin Luther King, Jr. to have been correct when he said that humanity can no longer be tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war. Let the efforts of us all prove that he was not a mere dreamer when he spoke of the beauty of genuine brotherhood and peace being more precious than diamonds or silver or gold. Strive to make something of yourselves, and then strive to make the most of yourselves.”

To Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., all who have inspired us and to our honorees today who have led by examples of excellence, I pray that many will follow in your footsteps. On this day, I will take five minutes to remember a time when somebody told me “No,” and I will visualize my going ahead anyway and succeeding at my goal.

It has been my honor to serve on this committee for the last 18 years.

Today, we honor “Community Champions” who continue to demonstrate their personal commitment to enhancing the dignity of all people while supporting the tenets and core values of Dr. King: Non-Violence; Love; Commitment; Courage; Social Justice; Leadership; and Racial Equality.

Like many of you, our honorees are doing great volunteer work in the community in service to others. You or someone you know in the community could easily be gracing the stage today as an MLK Award honoree. Service to the community is a way of life, as clearly demonstrated by our honorees today.

The committee respectfully requests your support in ensuring that we continue to recognize those making a difference for the citizens in our community, by nominating a deserving community servant to be recognized at the 2021 awards ceremony.

Greetings!

It is my distinct honor to welcome you all to the 2020 Arizona MLK Celebration Awards and Scholarship Breakfast!

It is inspiring to see how far this event, and our state has come over the past 34 years, since its inception. We know, however, that Dr. King's enduring message of love, equal rights and equal justice is as urgent and necessary today as it was during his lifetime.

We have far yet to go. As one of Arizona's three African American state lawmakers, I do my best to help our community bend that long arc of the moral universe towards justice, and to live by Dr. King's words, especially my personal favorite quote: "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."

I want to congratulate the phenomenal Jesse Ary on being honored with the Calvin C. Goode "Lifetime Achievement Award. From becoming the first African American director of a YMCA in the Valley to his service on the Arizona Board of Education, Jesse has made an indelibly positive impact on young people in our state. Congratulations as well to Living the Dream Award winners Felecia Davis, Virginia Fargo, Colby Jeffers and Timothy Seay as well.

Greetings!

On behalf of the Arizona Commission of African American Affairs and its eight Commissioners, it is my honor to recognize the holiday commemorating the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As an Arizona native, I appreciate the holiday not only because of Dr. King’s tireless efforts to enrich the lives of all Americans, but also the struggles Arizona’s citizens had to endure to be able to celebrate the holiday in the manner in which we do today.

Dr. King’s message of true equality for people regardless of their differences must be continually sought. Yes, there have been some critical advances made; however ,there is still much work to be done.

This morning, we acknowledge the commitment to Dr. King’s vision that has been displayed by the Living The Dream recipients: Felicia Davis; Coby Jeffers; Tim Seay; and Virginia Fargo. I want to give a “civil rights” shout to Jesse Ary, a longtime Phoenix resident and Education Pillar co-chair of the Arizona African American Legislative Conference. He is well deserving of the Calvin C. Goode, Sr., Lifetime Achievement Award.

They have all served our community well!

Jesse Ary has demonstrated a lifelong and sustained personal commitment to enhancing the dignity of all people. Having actually met Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in person – which is well documented – Jesse Ary was deeply affected by Dr. King’s work and committed to his tenets as a way of life: Commitment; Leadership; Racial Equality; Social Justice; and Love.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Most recently, in 2018, Mr. Ary was appointed as a volunteer of the board of trustees of United Methodist Higher Education Foundation. The organization makes it economically possible for qualified students to attend institutions of higher education. In 2017, he supported the efforts to award more than $2.3 million in scholarships to 1,000-plus students. In 2016, Mr. Ary was inducted into the Jesse Ary Honor Roll Club by Career Success High Schools as part of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

Mr. Ary also served as a volunteer with Arizona State Board of Education from 2005-2009, and with Arizona Parkways and Historic & Scenic Roads Advisory Committee. He volunteers his time as a board member and secretary on the executive committee of First United Methodist Church, as well as the Staff Parish Relations Committee.

In 1980, Mr. Ary accepted a five-year commitment as the fundraising committee chair to find a permanent home for the Valley’s Black Theater Troupe.

His other service involvementsincludes: advisory board member, Samaritan Health Service; volunteer member, Madison Elementary School Parent-Teacher Association; volunteer president of Phoenix Metro Family Services Agency; and volunteer member of American Arbitration Association.

In 2008, then governor Janet Napolitano appointed him as a volunteer on the Governor’s African-American Advisory Council. He currently serves as the Education Pillar chair for the annual Arizona African American Legislative Conference.

In January 1998, Mr. Ary was recognized by Phoenix Human Relations Commission as one of eight outstanding human rights advocates during the 12th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Breakfast. He has continued that commitment by serving as a volunteer on the Arizona MLK Celebration Committee for more than 20 years. He most recently has volunteered and served as chair of the Arizona MLK Interfaith Prayer Breakfast subcommittee for the past three years.

Mr. Ary volunteered his time to do a short documentary highlighting the development of the Arizona MLK Celebration efforts in the state. The video has been used several occasions by the Celebration committee at its annual awards events.

This award recognizes an exceptional individual who has made Phoenix a better place to live through a lifelong dedication to promoting social and economic justice, defending civil rights and enhancing the dignity of all people. In his 22-year tenure with Phoenix City Council, Calvin C. Goode, Sr., worked endlessly to ensure these rights for all residents – guided by a deeply held belief in quality for all people. His lifetime exemplifies a powerful commitment to improving the quality of life in Phoenix.

History of the Holiday

1986

Early: Legislative action to establish a paid state holiday passes in the Senate but fails in the House by 1 vote.

Late: Gov. Bruce Babbitt creates a paid state holiday via his power of executive order to be celebrated the third Monday in January.

1987

Arizona's King Holiday history dates back to 1984.

The journey to honor – and to keep – a dream is as follows:

January: Newly elected Gov. Evan Mecham rescinds the paid state holiday claiming Babbitt's executive order illegal; he declares the third Sunday in January as the staterecognized King holiday because it would be more appropriate since King was a Baptist minister.

1984

July: Phoenix City Council unanimously votes to honor Dr. King with a paid holiday for city workers.

1989 September: Arizona Legislature passes a bill that creates a paid King holiday eliminating Columbus Day so as not to create an additional state-paid holiday.

1985

January: Phoenix is state's first city with official paid King holiday plus prayer breakfast, youth art exhibit, march and festival; other cities soon follow.

1990

August: A petition to restore Columbus Day and force the King holiday to a public vote was successful; the petition drive garnered 71,055 signatures.

November: Proposition 302, which would establish a state-paid King holiday and retain a paid Columbus Day holiday, was defeated by 1 percent; a related Proposition (301) to create a state-paid King holiday and eliminate a paid Columbus Day holiday also was defeated.

1991

March: Arizona Legislature passes a referendum

to put to public vote a bill that would combine Washington's and Lincoln's birthdays into President's Day and establish a King Civil Rights Day to be observed the third Monday in January

to go into eect in 1993.

1993

January: The first paid state holiday

honoring Dr. King is celebrated in Arizona.

November: 61 percent of Arizona voters approve Proposition 300 to establish a paid King holiday; 39 percent voted against the

January: 10th anniversary of a paid King holiday is observed.

She is a former HR executive and the CEO and founder of The Black Women’s Collective.

Known for her one-of-a-kind, no nonsense approach to empowering leaders, Felicia’s knowledge, skills and expertise have been leveraged by companies such as: Schwab; Take The Lead; T-Mobile; and Pepperdine University. She has helped to elevate performance by empowering leaders to think strategically, connect meaningfully and lead decisively with a strong focus on culture and results.

Felicia believes that leadership is your birthright, but the current and ever-changing environment demands a new kind of leadership. This is what drives her commitment to partner with corporate and entrepreneurial leaders to help them brand their brilliance, position their expertise and consistently seize opportunities.

In 2018, during her seven-city empowerment tour, the impact of Felicia’s work was featured in The Wall Street Journal and subsequently on ABC 15.

Felicia proudly professes that when women commit to the process, do the work and lead beyond their comfort zone, not only are they re-focused, re-engaged and re-energized, but they can finally stop being overworked, overlooked and underpaid… for good.

Married to her husband of 26 years, they have three adult children. Felicia admits to having an unhealthy obsession with reality tv, fashion and gummy worms!

Living the Dream Award

Virginia Fargo has lived in Arizona for 19 years; she was born in Michigan. As a graduate from Arizona State University majoring in biochemistry and minoring in liberal arts, Virginia is extremely hard working and strives to be the best. Her strong science and math background give her a unique ability to thoroughly research every situation.

Virginia is a branch manager at Stearns Lending where she has been employed for nearly nine years.

Virginia takes part in numerous community activities and groups. Virginia is on the Balsz Community Education Foundation board where she’s responsible for teacher appreciation & community enrichment.

Virginia has been a member of the Black Board of Director’s Project for over a decade.

She also volunteers with the Southwest Veteran Chambers of Commerce for more than four years.

Virginia is an active servant in her community, she serves as the chair of the board for Professional Advisory Committee, a nonprofit organization that serves veterans and people with mental health issues.

Virginia motivated to stop the school to prison pipeline, decriminalize mental health, support veterans & make sure all races have an equal opportunity, equality and inclusion. She’s also passionate about helping families build wealth through home ownership.

As a mother of two children, Virginia understands the importance of having a home for your family. Virginia hosts monthly home buyer education classes.

She is very friendly, honest and passionate about helping people. Superior customer service is Virginia's top priority and her work ethic, enthusiasm and radiant personality allow her to overcome any challenge. She is a great listener and will stop at nothing to make sure her client’s needs are completely satisfied.

Virginia is an extraordinary professional, servant leader and community volunteer who will tailor all available resources and mortgage technology to create a solution that works for you.

Living the Dream Award

Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Colby Jeffers has a passion for music, education, community building, youth empowerment, and positive social change. His mission in music is to create socially conscious and spiritually focused rap that uplifts, educates, and inspires.

Colby is a member of the Baha’i Faith, which deeply inspires his music and lyrics. Themes such as unity, oneness, justice, and nobility are rooted in Colby’s spirituality. He also has a deep devotion to serving humankind, motivating him to always provide a message that animates and empowers the listener.

He has released four albums: Change The World; Wizdome; LIT; and Release The Power. Colby also has directed a number of music videos that have garnered international recognition.

He performs regularly in the Phoenix area and has served as a featured performer, emcee, or keynote speaker for several events around the Valley. Colby also enjoys bringing his music to other communities, touring across Arizona and the Southwest United States.

An educator and mentor by nature, Colby also is extremely active in youth empowerment work. Colby serves as a teaching artist with The Rap Camp, an organization that aims to create positive change through rap. He has helped facilitate several rap workshops, helping young people develop their power of expression and channel it towards noble ends.

He also serves with the Junior Youth Spiritual Empowerment Program, working with teens to develop their spiritual perception, moral character, and capacities for service to the community. This is accomplished through study, elevated discussions, art, recreation and youth-led service projects.

Colby's efforts have positively impacted the lives of hundreds of youth in Phoenix and around the state of Arizona.

In short, Colby is dedicated to being of service in every arena of his life. He measures his success by the positive impact his efforts have in the lives of others.

Living the Dream Award

Tim Seay was born on the westside of Chicago, Illinois, in 1964, to the hard-working parents of Louis and Lillian Seay (deceased). The ethics of hard work and diligences were instilled in him by his parents and brother Tony (deceased). His adult children – Tim Jr. and Ve’lori Seay – are supportive by helping him to identify and to use his gift of giving from the heart.

Tim received his elementary, junior high and high school education in Maywood, Illinois. Then went on to earn degrees in electrical engineering from DePaul and Tennessee State universities. Tim worked for an electrical utility company (Com Ed) in Chicago as a lineman and then progressed to be leading engineer of the company.

Tim always is willing to roll up his sleeves to help people and to serve his community. Learning the true value of giving more than receiving from his parents, Tim has made this his motto in his adult life.

Knowledge from his parents, books and the history about Dr. King and other civil rights leaders, Tim has mastered the art of “paying it forward” for those in need.

Tim has received numerous awards for his philanthropy work in Chicago: Most Admired Citizen of the Year (1997); Most Affluent African American Under 40 (1998); and Top Electrical Engineer (1995, 1996), to name a few.

Tim moved to Phoenix, Arizona, on January 1, 2000, to continue his philanthropy and community work. He joined several organizations upon his relocation: The Elks Lodge; NAACP; Blacks In Government; American Legion Post 65; Arizona Prince Hall Masons Foundation; Prince Hall Shriners (past president); and many more.

Through his leadership as president of Square-N- Compass and as grand master for Arizona Prince Hall Masons, he and the organizations have raised more than $1 million in academic and trade scholarships and grants. He has led efforts to provide needs for children and families for the past 13 years: more than 300 turkeys per year; and 8,000-plus toys for holidays. He also mentors youth through scholarship programs.

Tim has orchestrated voter registration/restoration programs and teaches business for nonprofits and health awareness classes for the community. Outreach work with organizations include: CASS; Roosevelt Early Childhood Family Resource Center; Roosevelt School District; and several youth programs throughout the Valley. He enjoys reading, ballroom dancing, antique cars, sports and traveling.
