About the Cover: This issue’s cover was created by the talented Ahmad Al-Ghanim co-founder of Thouq and Thouq Studio, Kuwait’s leading design Hub. Designed as a collectible piece of art that reflects both personality and purpose, the cover captures the hopeful and energetic vibes that we want to take into 2026 while honoring our heritage in a way that feels fresh, thoughtful, and unmistakably Thouq and also very bazaar.

Happy new year amazing k-town peeps! All of us here at bazaar magazine and bazaar studios sincerely hope all of your many 2026 resolutions come true, and we’re positive that you are going to finally use that gym membership, stop smoking, stop vaping, eat less burgers, be kinder, more compassionate, save more, travel more, call your family more, and everything else that you’ve decided to do! At the heart of this issue are the people shaping Kuwait’s present and future in thoughtful, intentional ways. We sit down with Jamal S. Alfahham, founder of Mastara, whose vision is redefining how we think about our homes through smart, sustainable, and tech-forward design. We also meet Carly Arzeen Zandipour, Mastara’s Chief Marketing Officer, a dynamic builder and strategist who believes deeply in community-driven growth, non-linear careers, and creating businesses with both soul and scale. We also turn our attention to health and wellbeing with nutritionist Iman AlAwadhi, founder of Health Talk, who addresses one of Kuwait’s most pressing challenges with honesty, compassion, and science-led guidance. Her work reminds us that real health is not built through extremes, but through understanding, consistency, and care. Together, these conversations reflect a Kuwait led by people who are not chasing trends, but building systems, spaces, and habits that support better living in meaningful, lasting ways. This spirit of community and intention also comes to life through spaces designed to bring people together. In this issue, we shine a light on the PCC Library, a reminder of the quiet power of reading and shared culture in a fast-moving world. More than a collection of books, the library is a living community space where curiosity is encouraged, access is open, and learning is treated as a lifelong pursuit. It represents a growing movement toward creating public spaces that invite reflection, conversation, and connection, especially across generations. We celebrate the return of a familiar favorite, with the New IKEA Catalogue making its way back into homes across Kuwait. Thoughtfully created for local life, this edition feels deeply rooted in the way we gather, host, and live together. From multigenerational living rooms and generous dining tables to smart storage and everyday rituals, the catalogue reflects real homes, real moments, and real needs. Blending the comfort of a printed classic with the ease of digital exploration, it reminds us that good design is not about trends, but about creating spaces that support family, connection, and a better everyday life. As we look ahead to 2026, we also turn inward. Beyond resolutions and checklists, this issue explores the idea of Inner Engineering and how lasting happiness is built from the inside out. In a world that constantly asks us to do more, Inner Engineering invites us to become steadier, clearer, and more resilient within ourselves. It is a reminder that real change does not come from forcing outcomes, but from aligning our inner world so that life feels more manageable, focused, and meaningful. We close this issue with a return to stillness and renewal, as Talise enters a new chapter of wellbeing. With thoughtful upgrades, refined spaces, and an expanded approach to holistic care, Talise reminds us that true luxury lies in how we feel, not just how things look. As we step into 2026, it serves as a gentle invitation to slow down, recalibrate, and choose moments of care that restore balance and clarity. It is a fitting note to end on, a reminder that after all the ambition, movement, and momentum, wellbeing remains the foundation that carries us forward. Happy reading! Ahmed El-Adly

CARLY ARZEEN ZANDIPOUR IS BUILDING THE FUTURE, ONE IDEA AT A TIME From startup hustle to scaling Mastara, the CMO bringing heart, strategy, and community to everything she touches By bazaar Staff

Carly Arzeen Zandipour does not believe in neat job titles or linear career paths. Ask her what she does, and she will tell you simply that she takes ideas and turns them into reality. It is an answer that perfectly captures her energy. Carly is a builder by nature, someone who thrives in fast-moving environments where vision meets execution, and where growth is never theoretical, only lived. Currently the Chief Marketing Officer at Mastara, Carly brings a rare mix of strategic clarity, startup grit, and infectious enthusiasm to her role. She exudes confidence and charm, but what really stands out is her belief in people and in communitydriven building. For Carly, the future of work is not about climbing one ladder but about exchanging time for equity, contributing skills across multiple businesses, and growing alongside ideas. It is a philosophy she lives by and actively supports, even launching her own side platform to connect likeminded builders across Kuwait and the wider GCC. Her deep love for the startup world is unmistakable. Carly speaks about it with the kind of excitement usually reserved for passion projects, not full-time careers. She is an advocate for the chaos, the uncertainty, and the creativity that come with building something from scratch. In startups, she explains, you are never confined to one role. You learn to think fast, adapt quickly, and create value with limited resources. That mindset has shaped how she approaches growth today, whether she is working with early-stage startups or large, established businesses. The hustle mentality stays with her, and more often than not, it pays off. That same energy drew her to Mastara. While the idea itself came from CEO Jamal S Alfahham, it was his vision that convinced Carly to come on board. He wanted to bring convenience to a market where convenience simply did not exist. Anyone who has tried to buy made-to-measure curtains in Kuwait knows the drill. Endless car rides, word-ofmouth recommendations, and a multi-step process that feels anything but seamless. Mastara set out to change that entirely, offering a premium shop-athome solution that mirrors international standards while being tailored to the local customer. Timing, however, had other plans. Mastara launched just before the Covid lockdowns, which meant a home-visit-based service suddenly could not visit homes. Instead of slowing down, the team leaned into communication. Social media became their bridge, allowing them to introduce the brand, share their philosophy, and build anticipation. When home consultations resumed, the response was immediate. Back-to-back bookings, glowing 16

reviews, and organic word of mouth confirmed what the team had hoped for. Mastara was not just working. It was resonating. Today, Mastara is known first and foremost as a service provider. Carly is clear about that. The goal was always to deliver an experience people would talk about, and they did. With over sixty thousand followers and a deeply engaged audience, Mastara has built something unusual for a curtain company. A community. Through events, collaborations, and constant dialogue with customers and designers, the brand has become a hub for people who genuinely love home decor and interior design. Scaling in the GCC has taught Carly a few nonnegotiable lessons. The first is hiring the right people. Not necessarily the most experienced, but those who believe in the idea as much as the founders do. The second is listening to customers, even when it means pivoting or rethinking processes. The third is data. Tracking everything, understanding the sales and marketing funnel, and obsessing over where customers are gained or lost. For Carly, scaling becomes far easier once you truly understand your home market. At Mastara, growth has not meant abandoning the core. Instead, it has been about experimenting thoughtfully. Alongside the flagship shop-at-home service, the brand introduced an online madeto-measure offering and explored new product categories. In 2025, Masahat by Mastara launched as a distinct business unit, focused on

custom sofas and local designer products through studio appointments. It is a different expression of the brand, but still rooted in design, service, and personalization. Culture, for Carly, is everything. She looks for passion, curiosity, and a genuine desire to build. She openly admits to turning away candidates who have not even looked up Mastara before an interview. She is not looking for people chasing a paycheck. She wants builders, future entrepreneurs, and people who see the experience itself as the reward. The result is a team so invested that, as she puts it, anyone you speak to sounds like an owner. Kings and queens, each in their own right. Behind the scenes, Carly’s discipline is just as impressive as her drive. She unwinds before the day even begins, waking up before sunrise, heading to the gym, meditating, walking her Rottweiler Hank, and easing into the morning with

family calls and a proper breakfast. By the time she gets to work, she is fully present. The trade-off is an early bedtime, a routine she has embraced for years. And when things feel overwhelming, Carly does something radical. She disconnects completely. No calls, no messages, just nature, her dog, and space to recharge. It is a boundary she learned to protect, understanding that energy is a resource that needs care. Looking ahead, what excites her most is technology. An unapologetic AI advocate, Carly is already exploring how artificial intelligence can enhance Mastara’s platforms and take the shopat-home experience even further. For someone who builds for a living, Carly Arzeen Zandipour is also deeply committed to living well. And perhaps that balance, between ambition and grounding, strategy and soul, is what makes everything she touches feel so alive. [Continued...]

UP CLOSE & PERSONAL QUESTIONNAIRE What do you most value about your friends? That we can do literally anything or nothing and it still feels good. Most of my friendships are built on mental connection first. We kind of just exchange energy depending on who needs what.

What is your greatest fear? Playing life too safe. What is your most marked characteristic? Intensity or complete chill I don’t really have a middle setting.

What are your favorite words to live by? Stay curious. It’s never led me wrong.

Which living person do you most admire? I can’t answer this. I admire very specific traits in very different people, intelligence here, wit there, a kind moment. I love people. I love listening to them and watching how they move through the world (ok that sounds creepy).

Which talent would you most like to have? Languages. I’ve lived in 7 countries over the past 20 years and somehow still only speak English. It’s embarrassing. I have so much admiration for multi linguists.

Where would you most like to live? Anywhere that keeps me challenged and a little uncomfortable. I love the GCC but I would love to do a stint in a dark and moody town with old goth style buildings somewhere in Europe.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? When the meat to bread ratio in my burger is just right and the chips are perfect. That’s it.

What is one trait you have that you are most grateful for? Focus. When I lock in, I really lock in. It got me through a law degree and an MBA while working full time, usually with a side project happening.

If you could have any job, what would it be? Superhero.

What is your greatest extravagance? Experiences. I’ll say yes to almost any trip without asking questions and deal with the consequences later.

What is the human trait you most dislike about others? A narrow perspective. Especially when it comes with a lot of confidence.

What do you hope for the future? To keep learning and to pass things forward properly. Keep building, and stay curious enough to enjoy it all.

What is your most treasured possession? My brain. I’ve put a lot of time and money into it and I trust it more than anything else.

What is it that you most dislike? Small talk that goes on for too long. We can either go deeper or stop.

Want to learn more about what Carly is up to? Find her on TikTok and Instagram @mbainheels or on LinkedIn by searching her name.

18

Which words or phrases do you most overuse? “You know.” I say it constantly and I’m painfully aware of it.

What would you consider your greatest achievement? Building a life where I get to choose what I work on and who I work with.

KEETA IS GROWING

The platform Expands Its Merchant Ecosystem in Kuwait, Supporting the Growth of Homegrown Businesses By bazaar Staff

Keeta, the delivery platform growing alongside Kuwait’s business community, has announced a new expansion of its merchant ecosystem, with a growing number of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and beloved local favourites joining its platform across Kuwait. This milestone represents more than growth in numbers; it reflects Keeta’s long-term commitment to supporting Kuwait’s entrepreneurial spirit and helping local businesses thrive in an increasingly digital economy. Since its launch in Kuwait, Keeta has onboarded thousands of SMBs restaurants, including local favourites such as Freej Swaeleh, known for its Kuwaiti cuisine; Meme’s Curry, offering Japanese flavours; and UR Cookies, a popular dessert concept. This growth reinforces the company’s commitment to building a platform that reflects Kuwait’s diverse culinary landscape. It also aligns with Keeta’s broader philosophy of ‘Eat Better. Live Better’; the belief that better choices, better access, and stronger local communities lead to a more fulfilling quality of life. Empowering homegrown businesses remains central to that philosophy. Keeta’s approach to merchant support is grounded in humility, partnership, and genuine understanding of the challenges faced by small and medium businesses. From the very first interaction, Keeta provides dedicated onboarding support, menu engineering insights, and operational advisory tailored specifically to each merchant’s needs. This includes helping restaurants present their identity online in a way that is authentic and attractive to customers, reviewing performance, and offering continuous guidance to ensure sustainable growth. For many merchants, joining Keeta has opened the door to new customer segments and improved visibility in a highly competitive market. Through consistent follow-up, data-driven recommendations, and a collaborative working style, Keeta strives to ensure that every business - from family-owned eateries to new culinary innovators - feels supported, heard, and valued. Commenting on the expansion, Ebrahim Hameed, Head of SMB business at Keeta Kuwait, said: “Kuwait’s homegrown businesses are the backbone of its food culture and community life. For us, supporting them goes far beyond onboarding; it is about building long-term relationships and helping them grow with confidence. ‘Eat Better. Live Better.’ reflects our belief that by empowering these businesses, we uplift the community as a whole. We are grateful for the trust local entrepreneurs place in Keeta, and we take that responsibility seriously.” This new cohort of merchants showcases the richness of Kuwait’s culinary identity: traditional kitchens preserving generational recipes, modern homegrown concepts offering fresh perspectives, and neighbourhood favourites trusted for years. THE ART OF SEEING DIFFERENTLY

Inside the Creative World of Razan Alslaysil, Kuwait’s Rising Fashion Designer and Visual Merchandiser By bazaar staff

When you meet Razan, what comes through first is a grounded sense of purpose. She describes herself as driven and passionate, someone who follows the things she loves even when the road is difficult or uncertain. As the first Kuwaiti student to formally study both fashion design and visual merchandising, she carries that accomplishment with quiet pride. It reflects a path she chose early and wholeheartedly. “I could not imagine myself doing anything outside of fashion. Between fabrics, silhouettes, and brand storytelling is where I have always felt the most whole and understood,” she says. Her relationship with fashion began long before she stepped into a classroom. At ten, she convinced her father to buy her a sewing machine. She remembers sneaking fabric from her mother’s drawers, tracing the outline of her pants, sewing them together, and only afterward realizing she had stitched them inside out. The experiment did not go as planned, but it sparked a fascination that never faded. “Fashion has always been the art of expressing yourself without having to say a word,” she says. Razan’s studies have taken her from Kuwait to Miami and then to Michigan, each place offering a different kind of growth. Miami exposed her to vibrant cultures and the energy of fashion studios. Studying in Kuwait grounded her sense of identity. Completing her degree online from Michigan required independence and focus. “Every environment pushed me in different ways, spiritually, creatively, and personally,” she says. “I learned to adapt, to see the world through new lenses, and that growth shows in my work.” She is most energized by visual merchandising, especially the storytelling that sits at its core. She enjoys studying a brand from the inside out and understanding how it communicates emotionally. “An impactful display is one that stops you midstep,” she says. “It is not just decoration. It is strategy, emotion, and experience woven together.” The displays she admires are the ones that speak without saying a word. One of her standout academic moments was a CAD project in which she built an entire

22

store concept from scratch. It required her to consider floors, fixtures, palettes, narratives, and merchandise placement as one cohesive system. “It challenged me, but it also showed me what I am capable of,” she says. Razan comes from both Kuwaiti and British backgrounds, and the influence of that dual heritage appears naturally in her work. She is drawn to the richness, warmth, and ornamentation often found in Middle Eastern aesthetics, but she is equally inspired by British minimalism and structure. “My identity taught me to see beauty in differences,” she says. “I tend to design with both sides in mind: softness and edge, modernity and tradition.” Trend forecasting has also become one of her strengths. She has always had an eye for early signals and emerging ideas, and studying consumer behavior has sharpened that instinct. She watches everything around her: street style, cultural movements, shifts in mood, and the micro trends that surface on social media. “Trends do not come from one place. They come from conversations, from culture, from what people are feeling,” she says. Razan is clear-eyed about the realities of the fashion world. The industry moves quickly and demands constant awareness and adaptability. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, she uses that pace as motivation. “It keeps me focused and observant. I have learned to anticipate what might resonate with people and what might shift next,” she says.

Her interests span multiple areas including pattern making, buying, retail management, styling, and writing. Visual display may be where she feels most aligned, but she is also exploring fashion journalism. She recently started her own project called NAQSH Magazine, which allows her to communicate fashion from a different angle. “I love every part of this field. I truly have the passion to explore all of it,” she says. Paris remains her greatest source of inspiration. “It is where fashion evolves endlessly. Romance and luxury live side by side, and runways feel like art,” she says. When Razan begins a new project, she always starts with the brand itself. She studies the emotions it evokes, what it stands for, and how it communicates visually. From there she builds a mood, explores color direction, creates narratives, and lets the concept unfold through research and intuition. As she continues developing her portfolio, she hopes her work reflects the core of who she is: a designer who values bold storytelling, emotional retail spaces, strong narratives, and a thoughtful mix of her cultural influences. She wants her creative identity to feel honest, curious, and future focused. Razan’s journey of growth into the fashion world with intention, depth, and a perspective that feels entirely her own, is one that we’re excited to watch. 23

THE RISE OF QUIET CONFIDENCE Why calm presence is becoming the new marker of power By bazaar staff

For years, confidence was framed as volume. Speak first. Speak loudest. Take up space. But something has shifted. Increasingly, the most compelling people in a room are not the most animated or assertive. They are the ones who listen closely, speak with intention, and move without urgency. This is quiet confidence, and it is changing how we understand presence. Quiet confidence is not shyness, nor is it passivity. It is assurance without performance. It shows up as steadiness rather than spectacle, clarity rather than force. In a world saturated with noise, this kind of confidence feels not only refreshing, but powerful. Author Susan Cain, whose work has reshaped conversations around temperament and leadership, writes in Quiet: “There’s zero correlation between being the best talker and having the best ideas.” That observation captures the heart of quiet confidence. It is not about withholding voice, but about using it deliberately. Psychologists often describe confidence as an internal sense of self-efficacy, the belief that one can navigate challenges and respond effectively. When this belief is secure, it does not need constant external validation. Quiet confidence grows from self-trust rather than approval. This form of confidence is often mistaken for reserve. In reality, it is groundedness. A quietly confident person does not rush to fill silence. They allow pauses. They are comfortable not having an immediate answer. This ease signals security more clearly than bravado ever could. Cultural shifts have played a role in elevating this style of presence. As workplaces become more collaborative and less hierarchical, listening and emotional intelligence carry greater weight. Research in organizational psychology has consistently shown that teams perform better under leaders who demonstrate empathy and calm decision-making rather than dominance. Loud certainty may command attention, but calm clarity builds trust. Quiet confidence also shows up in how people set boundaries. There is no need for explanation or defense. A simple “no” delivered with calm is often more effective than a long justification. This ability to hold boundaries without drama reflects internal alignment. When values are clear, expression becomes simpler. Interestingly, quiet confidence often develops later in life. It grows through experience, failure, and recalibration. Early adulthood may favor visibility and validation. Over time, many people shift toward discernment. They speak when they have something to say, not to be seen saying it. This is not withdrawal. It is selectivity. Body language plays a subtle role. Relaxed posture, unhurried movements, and steady eye contact communicate assurance without 24

aggression. There is no need to dominate space when one feels at home within it. Others sense this immediately, even if they cannot articulate why. Social media culture has complicated ideas of confidence by rewarding constant output and self-promotion. Quiet confidence often resists this pressure. It does not rely on visibility for legitimacy. This can feel countercultural, but it is precisely why it stands out. In environments where everyone is broadcasting, restraint becomes distinctive. Importantly, quiet confidence does not mean disengagement. It does not mean withholding opinions or avoiding leadership. It means choosing moments thoughtfully. When a quietly confident person speaks, people tend to listen, because silence has given their words weight. This style of confidence also supports better relationships. It creates space for others to

contribute. It reduces competition and invites collaboration. People feel seen rather than overshadowed. In this way, quiet confidence is relational, not performative. Cultivating quiet confidence does not require changing personality. It requires trust. Trust in one’s judgment. Trust in one’s pace. Trust that presence does not need to be proven. Practices such as pausing before responding, listening without planning a reply, and speaking from clarity rather than urgency all strengthen this form of confidence. In a culture that often equates confidence with noise, choosing calm can feel risky. But increasingly, it is the calmest voices that carry the furthest. Quiet confidence does not announce itself. It is felt. And once felt, it is rarely forgotten. Photo by Josh Hild on Unsplash.

THE ART OF THE PAUSE Why doing nothing on purpose improves clarity, creativity, and decision-making By bazaar staff

In a culture that rewards speed, the pause can feel like a failure. Silence is mistaken for indecision. Stillness is confused with stagnation. Yet across philosophy, psychology, and creative practice, the pause has long been understood as a powerful tool rather than an empty space. Seventeenth-century philosopher Blaise Pascal famously wrote, “All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.” Centuries later, that observation feels almost prophetic. The modern world leaves little room for unstructured stillness, and yet research and lived experience consistently point to the same conclusion: pausing is not a luxury, it is a cognitive necessity. WHY THE BRAIN NEEDS PAUSES The brain is not designed for constant output. Neuroscience shows that periods of rest activate what is known as the default mode network, a system associated with reflection, memory consolidation, and creative insight. This network becomes active when we are not focused on a task, such as during quiet rest or daydreaming. In practical terms, this means that stepping away from constant stimulation allows the brain to process information more deeply. Ideas connect. Emotions settle. Decisions gain perspective. Without pauses, thinking becomes reactive rather than reflective. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STOPPING AND PAUSING Pausing is not the same as quitting or avoiding. It is intentional, temporary, and purposeful. A pause says, “Let me gather myself before I move forward.” Stopping altogether implies disengagement. The pause, by contrast, prepares the ground for better action. This distinction matters because many people resist pausing out of fear. Fear of falling behind. Fear of missing out. Fear that if they slow down, everything will unravel. In reality, the opposite is often true. Without pauses, burnout becomes inevitable, and clarity disappears. PAUSE AS A CREATIVE PRACTICE Artists, writers, and designers have long understood the value of space. A blank canvas, a rest note in music, or white space on a page all serve the same purpose: they allow meaning to emerge. Without space, there is noise. The same principle applies to everyday life. When the schedule is packed and the mind is crowded, creativity flattens. When there is room to breathe, ideas surface unexpectedly. Many people report their best insights arriving in moments of stillness: in the shower, on a quiet walk, or while staring out of a window. 32

THE PAUSE AND DECISION-MAKING One of the most overlooked benefits of pausing is improved judgment. Immediate responses are often driven by emotion or habit. A pause introduces choice. It allows the nervous system to calm, reducing impulsive reactions and making space for thoughtful responses. Psychologist Viktor Frankl captured this idea clearly when he wrote, “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response.” That space is the pause. It is where agency lives. WHY PAUSES FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE Silence can surface thoughts we have been avoiding. Stillness removes distractions. For many people, that can feel unsettling. The impulse to check a phone, fill the silence, or stay busy often masks discomfort rather than productivity. Learning to pause is therefore also learning to tolerate presence. It means allowing thoughts to pass without immediately acting on them. Over time, this builds emotional resilience and self-trust. HOW TO INVITE MORE PAUSE INTO DAILY LIFE Pausing does not require retreats or long periods of meditation. Small, consistent moments matter more. A few minutes of quiet before starting the day. A deliberate breath before responding to

a message. Sitting without stimulation for five minutes instead of reaching for a screen. These micro-pauses accumulate. They train the nervous system to settle more quickly and the mind to observe rather than react. Over time, this changes how one moves through the world. PAUSE AS A FORM OF RESPECT Choosing to pause is also a way of respecting oneself. It acknowledges that attention is finite and energy is valuable. In a society that equates busyness with worth, pausing becomes a quiet act of self-definition. It also improves relationships. When someone pauses before responding, they listen more fully. Conversations deepen. Misunderstandings soften. Presence becomes felt rather than performed. A FINAL THOUGHT The pause is not empty time. It is fertile ground. It is where clarity forms, creativity gathers, and intention replaces impulse. Learning to pause does not mean doing less forever. It means doing what matters with greater care. In a world that rarely slows down, the pause is a skill worth reclaiming. Not as an escape, but as a return. Photo by JOYUMA on Unsplash.

THE SCIENCE OF FIRST IMPRESSIONS Why the first seven seconds shape how we’re seen — and how we see others By bazaar staff

Every day we make judgments in a blink. A glance across a room, the tone of a greeting, the way someone stands before they speak. These reactions feel instinctive, but science shows they follow clear patterns. Research in social psychology has found that people can form an impression of a face in as little as 100 milliseconds, a tenth of a second. That first impression often sets the emotional tone for everything that follows. Understanding what happens in those early moments does not mean learning how to perform. It means learning how presence, body language, and intention quietly communicate before words take over. WHAT HAPPENS IN THE FIRST SEVEN SECONDS The human brain is designed to assess quickly. Long before modern life, rapid judgments helped determine safety and trust. Today, the same mechanism evaluates posture, facial expression, eye contact, and movement. Within the first few seconds of meeting someone, the brain begins forming ideas about confidence, warmth, and credibility. Eye contact plays a central role. A steady, relaxed gaze signals attentiveness and openness, while constant avoidance can be misread as discomfort or disengagement. At the same time, too much intensity can feel confrontational. The balance lies in natural engagement, the kind that suggests curiosity rather than scrutiny. NONVERBAL SIGNALS SPEAK FIRST Before conversation begins, the body has already spoken. Posture is one of the strongest cues. An upright stance with relaxed shoulders communicates ease and confidence, while a closed or slouched posture can suggest tension or withdrawal. Even subtle gestures, such as angling the body slightly toward someone, signal interest and receptiveness. Facial expression matters just as much. A genuine smile involves both the mouth and the muscles around the eyes. Neuroscientists refer to this as a Duchenne smile, and it is widely associated with sincerity and warmth. Humans are remarkably good at sensing authenticity. When a smile feels forced or purely polite, it tends to register as distant rather than welcoming. FIRST WORDS AND HOW THEY ARRIVE Once speech begins, delivery becomes as important as content. People tend to interpret tone and pace before meaning. A calm, measured cadence suggests confidence and clarity, while rushing through words can be read as nervousness or uncertainty. Silence, too, plays a role. Brief pauses give weight to what is being said and allow space for connection. This is why first impressions are shaped not only by what we say, but how we say it. The breath behind the voice, the rhythm of speech, and the ease of expression all influence perception. 34

WHY FIRST IMPRESSIONS STICK One of the most fascinating findings in psychology is how durable first impressions can be. Once the brain forms an initial judgment, it tends to look for information that confirms it, a phenomenon known as confirmation bias. This means early impressions often become the lens through which later interactions are interpreted. That does not make first impressions permanent, but it does make them influential. Awareness of this tendency allows us to approach interactions with more intention and less assumption.

THE ROLE OF AWARENESS Mindfulness plays a quiet but powerful role in shaping how we are perceived. Taking a moment before entering a room or starting a conversation to notice posture, breath, and intention can reset the nervous system. That pause allows the body to soften and the mind to engage, creating a more grounded interaction. Research consistently shows that people respond positively to calm, attentive energy. It signals safety, respect, and confidence without demanding attention.

PRESENCE OVER PERFORMANCE Improving first impressions does not require changing who you are. It requires alignment. When internal state and external behavior match, people sense authenticity. Someone who is genuinely curious naturally leans in, listens attentively, and responds with warmth. Someone trying to impress often tightens, overthinks, or performs. The most effective first impressions come from presence rather than effort. Calm attention, steady breathing, and openness communicate far more than rehearsed lines ever could.

A FINAL THOUGHT First impressions are not about control or perfection. They are about showing up with clarity and ease. In a world that moves quickly and judges faster, learning how to inhabit the first seven seconds with intention is less about image and more about connection. Those early moments are not a test. They are an opening. An opportunity to meet another person with presence, curiosity, and the quiet confidence that comes from being fully where you are. Photo by youssef naddam on Unsplash.

BEHIND THE CURTAINS How Jamal S. Alfahham and Mastara are reimagining window coverings for the smart, sustainable home By bazaar Staff

“I’m the curtain guy!” That’s how Jamal S. Alfahham likes to introduce himself. It always gets a laugh—but behind the playful tagline is a serious entrepreneur on a mission to revolutionize how people experience their homes and offices. As the CEO and founder of Mastara, Jamal has taken something as seemingly simple as curtains and transformed it into a high-performance, hightech design category. “I’ve built a career around transforming measurements into meaningful living spaces,” he says. And he means that literally— Mastara is leading the way in the Gulf region with its bespoke, tech-forward approach to window coverings, combining design, engineering, and digital convenience in one streamlined service. Jamal’s roots in the home solutions industry run deep. “I come from a family deeply rooted in customized home products,” he shares. “My journey has taken me through aluminum, glazing, kitchens, custom doors, and interiors.” Each of these disciplines sharpened his attention to detail and honed his ability to translate measurements into functional beauty. Curtains, however, held a particular appeal. “They’re dynamic—shaped by trends, seasons, and lifestyles. They offer a more fluid customer journey compared to static interiors,” he explains. That realization became the foundation for Mastara, a company that blends craftsmanship with a techfirst mindset. “We launched the region’s first app where customers could input their window measurements and order custom blinds online. It was about bringing convenience and clarity to a fragmented market.” Jamal describes his leadership style as one driven by structure and logic. “I rely on data more than impulse. That said, Mastara wouldn’t be what it is without the incredible team behind it,” he says. “Each person brings a unique strength, and our synergy is our secret sauce.” What truly shaped Jamal’s vision for Mastara, though, was observing the realities of the curtain industry up close. “In places like Dajeej, customers often face unclear pricing, limited transparency, and a lack of professionalism,” he notes. “These were persistent complaints I heard—and experienced. I knew the industry could do better.” With Mastara, Jamal set out to change the narrative: to offer a transparent, consultative, and seamless experience, underpinned by engineeringlevel accuracy and hospitality-level service. At Mastara, curtains aren’t just decorative— they’re engineered for performance. “Over time, the demand shifted from ‘make it look good’ to ‘make it work smarter,’” Jamal says. “That’s when we began specializing in tech-integrated solutions.” 36

This includes motorized curtains, voicecontrolled blinds, and app-based scheduling systems. “It’s not just fabric on a window anymore. It’s light control, energy efficiency, and privacy—optimized.” That shift in mindset is transforming the GCC market. “Customers today want window coverings that do more,” he explains. “Especially in new builds, luxury villas, and smart homes, the demand for automation is high. People want comfort, silence, and energy efficiency—all in one package.” Mastara meets that demand by offering both wired and wireless motor options, integrating with smart home platforms like Alexa and Control4, and tailoring solutions for everything from doubleheight spaces to beachfront chalets. In a region where heat and sustainability are constant concerns, Mastara’s approach offers more than aesthetic value—it delivers real impact. “Simple logic: keep the heat out, keep the cool in,” Jamal says. “Using blackout or sunscreen fabrics and automating their movement throughout the day significantly reduces solar gain.” That means the AC works less, rooms stay cooler naturally, and clients enjoy lower electricity bills. “We tailor every setup,” he adds. “Blackout rollers for east-facing bedrooms, sunscreen layers for afternoon comfort, smart automation for peak heat hours—it’s all driven by data and pmeasurement.” The benefits go beyond physical comfort. “Clients tell us their homes feel calmer. One even said, ‘I don’t even think about my curtains anymore— they just move when they need to.’ That’s exactly the kind of seamless living we aim for.” One of Mastara’s standout qualities is its ability to fuse cutting-edge technology with local aesthetic traditions. Nowhere is that more evident than in spaces like Diwaniyas, where cultural relevance is key. “Diwaniyas are emotional spaces—high-traffic, high-connection,” Jamal says. “We offer fabrics in earth tones and geometric patterns that echo local design, while also delivering durability and high performance.” Today’s customers are seeking a blend of old and new—traditional motifs with a modern, neutral palette. Mastara embraces this evolution. “We’ve treated our fabrics to be flame-retardant, spill-proof, even cigaretteresistant,” Jamal says. “You get the look you want and the longevity you need.” 37

The larger trend, he says, is that customers themselves are driving this shift. “People here expect convenience. What used to be a luxury— motorized systems, smart scheduling—is now a baseline.” What truly distinguishes Mastara is its consultative approach. “We’re not just tailors or installers. We’re engineers,” Jamal emphasizes. “We assess everything—lighting, ceiling height, usage patterns, air vents—so that the window covering serves the space, not the other way around.” This deep, systems-oriented thinking extends to Mastara’s materials and technology choices. “We source our fabrics from top suppliers in Belgium, Italy, and France. They’re ISO-certified, antibacterial, antiallergic and ecoconscious. Our motors are sourced globally, and we prioritize modular components for easy maintenance and future upgrades.” As the smart home trend accelerates, Mastara is positioning itself at the forefront. “Window coverings are now part of the smart ecosystem— just like lighting or sound,” Jamal says. “Plug-andplay should be the default. We make sure our products integrate easily and perform reliably.” Internally, Mastara is also evolving. “We’re improving our CRM, streamlining our workflows, and training our consultants to be faster, sharper, more insightful,” he says. “Our goal is to be the number one provider of custom window coverings across the GCC. And that requires excellence at every touchpoint.” Sustainability is also a growing priority. “It’s not just a trend—it’s a requirement,” Jamal says. “We offer low-impact materials and long-lifespan solutions. Clients don’t always ask for it, but once we present the options, they appreciate it— especially younger homeowners.” As a thought leader in the region’s evolving design ecosystem, Jamal has one key message for homeowners and designers: “Think of your window coverings as part of your architecture, not an afterthought. Don’t stop at ‘what looks nice.’ Ask what works smarter, lasts longer, and fits your lifestyle.” He’s confident that tradition and technology can—and should—coexist. “You don’t have to choose between heritage and innovation. With the right partner, you get both.” With Mastara, Jamal Alfahham is proving that even something as simple as a curtain can be elevated into something intelligent, beautiful, and essential—a product that doesn’t just dress a room, but defines the way we live in it. Mastara is the first and only bilingual app and website in the region to offer customized curtains, and blinds. THE MODERN MAJLIS Why gathering spaces still matter in a fragmented world By bazaar staff

Long before co-working spaces, group chats, and social calendars, there was the majlis. A place to sit, talk, listen, disagree, and belong. While its form has evolved, the essence of the majlis remains deeply relevant. At its core, it is not about furniture or formality. It is about presence, conversation, and shared time. Across cultures, humans have always created informal gathering spaces. Sociologist Ray Oldenburg famously described these as “third places,” meaning spaces that exist outside home and work. In his book The Great Good Place, he wrote that third places are essential to community life because they foster connection, dialogue, and a sense of belonging. The majlis fits squarely within this idea, long before the term existed. Traditionally, the majlis served as a social and civic space. People gathered to exchange news, resolve disputes, welcome guests, and strengthen communal ties. Conversation was unstructured but meaningful. Listening mattered as much as speaking. Time moved differently there, slower and more generous. Today, the settings may look different. A modern majlis might be a living room, a long dining table, a shaded terrace, or even a recurring coffee gathering. What defines it is not architecture, but intention. It is a space where people show up not to perform, but to participate. Modern life has made such spaces harder to sustain. Schedules are tighter, attention is fragmented, and digital communication often replaces physical presence. Messages are efficient, but they lack texture. Tone is flattened. Nuance is lost. The majlis, in contrast, invites depth. It allows for pauses, for reading the room, for disagreement without disconnection. This is why the modern majlis is not a nostalgic concept. It is a response to contemporary pressures. As social interactions become increasingly transactional, spaces that encourage unstructured conversation become more valuable, not less. They counterbalance speed with slowness and output with presence. One defining feature of the majlis is inclusivity. Traditionally, anyone could enter, sit, and be heard. Status softened in the shared space. While modern versions may be smaller or more curated, the principle still applies. A true gathering space allows different perspectives to coexist. It does not require consensus, only respect. Another key element is repetition. Majlis culture thrives on regularity. Weekly gatherings, open-door evenings, or recurring meals build trust over time. People speak differently when they know the space will exist again. There is less urgency to conclude, less pressure to impress. Continuity creates safety. 40

The physical environment supports this ethos. Seating that encourages face-to-face conversation. Lighting that softens rather than spotlights. Food that is shared rather than plated individually. These choices are not decorative. They shape how people interact. When the space feels welcoming, conversation follows. Importantly, the modern majlis is not about scale. It does not require large homes or elaborate hosting. A few chairs arranged intentionally can be enough. What matters is the signal the space sends: you are welcome here, as you are, without agenda. In many ways, the majlis offers an antidote to performative socializing. There is no audience. There is no feed. What happens in the room exists for the people in it. This privacy allows honesty to surface. Stories unfold naturally. Silence is permitted. Psychologists have consistently linked social connection with wellbeing. While not all interaction nourishes, meaningful conversation does. Spaces like the majlis create the conditions

for that depth. They allow people to feel seen, heard, and grounded within a community. The modern majlis also adapts. It can include structured discussions or remain open-ended. It can be intergenerational or peer-based. It can live in homes, cultural spaces, or borrowed corners of public life. Its strength lies in flexibility anchored by intention. At a time when loneliness is often described as a modern epidemic, reclaiming spaces of gathering becomes an act of care. Not every conversation needs to be productive. Not every meeting needs an outcome. Sometimes, sitting together is enough. The majlis endures because it speaks to something fundamental: the human need to gather without purpose beyond connection. In modern form, it reminds us that community is not built through efficiency, but through time, presence, and shared space. Photo by rishi on Unsplash.

Around the Dining Table, Memories are Made The Dining section is where the catalogue truly leans into the heart of Kuwaiti known hospitality. The lunch or dinner table is where family and friends gather, from the youngest family members to grandparents. The New IKEA Catalogue captures this beautifully, reflecting family dynamics effortlessly. At the center of it all is the ROSENTORP expandable table, extended to seat everyone you care about, reinforcing the idea that no one should feel left out. We especially loved seeing, not just imagining, dishes being passed out by hand to commemorate this first Ramadan

WHAT YOUR CLOSET SAYS ABOUT YOUR LIFE STAGE How changing wardrobes quietly reflect changing priorities By bazaar staff

Closets are often treated as practical spaces, but they are also emotional archives. Long before we articulate a life shift, it tends to show up in what we wear, what we stop wearing, and what we keep “just in case.” A wardrobe is rarely just about clothes. It is about identity, transition, and the version of ourselves we are holding onto or learning to become.

Many people recognize the feeling of standing in front of a full closet with “nothing to wear.” The problem is often not a lack of options, but a mismatch between who we are now and what our clothes were chosen for. Life stages change faster than wardrobes, and that gap can feel quietly unsettling. Fashion psychologist Shakaila Forbes-Bell, author of Big Dress Energy, has written about how clothing shapes identity. She notes that what we wear influences not only how others perceive us, but how we perceive ourselves. When life changes, clothing that once felt right can begin to feel off, even if it still fits physically. Early adulthood wardrobes often prioritize possibility. There are statement pieces, experimental silhouettes, and outfits chosen for imagined futures. Clothing in this stage asks, Who could I be? rather than Who am I now? It reflects exploration, visibility, and a desire to try on identities through style. As careers stabilize and responsibilities grow, wardrobes tend to shift toward function and reliability. Comfort becomes important, but so does credibility. Pieces are chosen for longevity rather than novelty. This is often when people start investing in quality 46

without consciously naming it as such. The clothes still express personality, but they support daily life rather than compete with it. Later life stages bring another subtle evolution. Clothing becomes deeply personal and routinedriven. The most worn items are not necessarily the trendiest, but the most trusted. Many people develop a quiet uniform at this stage, not from boredom, but from self-knowledge. Repetition becomes ease. Closets also hold emotional weight. There are dresses saved for a body that has changed, suits tied to a job that ended, or shoes connected to a past version of life. These pieces are not clutter; they are memory. Letting them go can feel like letting go of a chapter, even when that chapter no longer fits the present. Organizing expert Marie Kondo popularized the idea of keeping items that “spark joy,” a phrase that resonated because it acknowledged the emotional role objects play. Whether one follows her method or not, the insight remains useful: clothing carries feeling. When an item no longer aligns with how you live, it creates friction every time you encounter it. A helpful question is not “Is this still fashionable?” but “What version of me bought

this?” The answer often reveals a life stage you have outgrown or are still negotiating. This is why closet edits can feel emotional. They are not about trends. They are about permission and closure. Psychologists have observed that major life transitions often come with symbolic changes, including appearance. After events such as career shifts, parenthood, relocation, or loss, style frequently changes without conscious planning. Clothing becomes a way to express an internal shift before language catches up. A closet aligned with your current life stage does not mean losing creativity or individuality. It means allowing your wardrobe to serve your life as it is now, not as it once was. When clothes match reality, daily decisions become easier and dressing feels intuitive rather than performative. The goal is not minimalism or abundance. It is coherence. A wardrobe that reflects how you actually move through your days supports confidence in subtle ways. In the end, your closet is not asking to be perfected. It is asking to be honest. Photo by Sarah Brown on Unsplash.

FOOD AS MEMORY Why certain flavors anchor us to people, places, and moments By bazaar staff

Food rarely exists only in the present. A single bite can pull us backward through time, returning us to kitchens we no longer enter, hands we no longer hold, and versions of ourselves we thought we had outgrown. Long before we name the emotion, the body recognizes it. Taste, more than any other sense, carries memory. This idea is not new. Marcel Proust famously captured it in In Search of Lost Time, when the taste of a madeleine dipped in tea unlocked a flood of childhood memories. “The past is hidden somewhere outside the realm, beyond the reach of intellect, in some material object,” he wrote. That passage has since become shorthand for how food bypasses logic and speaks directly to feeling. Neuroscience supports what literature has long suggested. Taste and smell are processed in areas of the brain closely linked to emotion and memory, particularly the limbic system. Unlike sight or sound, which are filtered through higher cognitive centers, flavor takes a more direct neurological route. This is why food memories often arrive uninvited, sudden and vivid. Most people can name at least one dish that feels like home. It might be a soup eaten during illness, a sweet tied to celebrations, or a recipe prepared by someone who is no longer alive. These foods are rarely elaborate. Their power lies in repetition and association. They were eaten at moments when emotions were unguarded and bonds were forming. Food memory is also deeply cultural. Recipes carry geography, climate, and history. A spice blend can signal a region. A cooking method can hint at migration, scarcity, or abundance. When people preserve traditional dishes, they are often preserving narrative as much as flavor. This is why altering a familiar recipe can feel personal. A substituted ingredient or adjusted seasoning may seem minor, but emotionally it can feel like disrupting memory itself. The dish no longer tastes like the story we remember. It tastes like something else, and that difference can register as loss. At the same time, food memory is not static. New associations form as life changes. A meal cooked during a difficult period may later symbolize resilience. A dish learned in a new country can become part of a blended identity. Memory layers meaning onto food rather than freezing it in time. Psychologists note that sensory memories, especially those linked to taste and smell, are among the most persistent. They are less verbal and more embodied. This is why they often surface unexpectedly, triggered by a smell on the street or a spice in a restaurant. Food also plays a central role in how we grieve and connect. Many cultures mark loss through shared meals. Cooking becomes a way to care 48

when language falls short. Eating familiar food can provide stability when everything else feels altered. People often recreate food from memory not to achieve accuracy, but to recapture feeling. The dish may never taste exactly the same, but the act of making it becomes ritual. Chopping, stirring, and seasoning turn the kitchen into a place of remembrance rather than production.

In a fast, outsourced food culture, reclaiming food as memory can be grounding. Cooking slowly and intentionally reconnects us to time, place, and story. In the end, food is never just nourishment. It is archive, language, and emotion. Long after the plate is cleared, the memory remains, waiting to be tasted again. Photo by Chad Montano on Unsplash.

HEALTH TALK WITH IMAN ALAWADHI By bazaar Staff

Obesity has become one of the most urgent health challenges in Kuwait, with 2024 statistics showing that nearly half of Kuwaiti adults are obese, and high rates appearing even among children and adolescents, including almost 11% of children under the age of 5. Recent KNSS findings continue to confirm the widespread prevalence of overweight and obesity among adults, while a World Obesity Federation report places Kuwait’s overall obesity rate at 45.3% of the population. This growing trend is not just a number on a scale, but a major driver of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular illnesses. Today, Kuwait ranks as the country with the highest obesity rate in both the Arab world and the Gulf region, emphasizing the seriousness of the issue. Beyond medical risks, obesity in both adults and youth brings physical limitations, psychosocial struggles including bullying and low self-esteem, and long-term health complications that can affect an entire lifetime. Yet, despite these alarming statistics, nutritionist Iman AlAwadhi, founder of Health Talk and healthtalkdiets.com, offers a more hopeful and effective approach to overcoming obesity. She believes that with the right strategy, obesity is not only manageable but fully reversible, especially when supported by professional, evidence-based guidance from a qualified dietitian.Iman graduated from Kuwait University with a Bachelor Degree of Nutrition and Master Degree from UK Sheffield Hallam University specializing in Applied Sport and Excersice Sceience. She is a nutritionist and a Kuwait-based clinical nutritionist known for her compassionate, science-based approach to weight management and wellness. With years of experience across Kuwait’s public hospitals, including work in obesity and surgical clinics, she has guided individuals of all ages through transformative health journeys. Her platform, “Health Talk” was created to make nutrition feel human, personal, and accessible, blending evidence-based guidance with emotional support. Iman specializes in personalized diet plans, habit-building, metabolic health improvement, and long-term lifestyle 50

change. Through the platform, she continues to inspire thousands to rebuild their confidence, reconnect with their bodies, and take courageous steps toward a healthier future. We spoke to Iman to learn more about her, the health situation in Kuwait and what we can do about it. Kuwait has some of the highest obesity rates in the region. How serious is the situation today? The situation is grave. As you know, as of 2024, nearly half of Kuwaiti adults are classified as obese, and we are also seeing high rates among the new youth generation. These numbers place Kuwait among the highest in the Arab world and the Gulf

region. It’s not just a statistic; it’s a reflection of a growing public health crisis that affects families, workplaces, and future generations. What are the biggest health risks associated with obesity that you see most often in Kuwait? Many factors. Obesity increases the risk of many chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome. But beyond these well-known risks, I also see the emotional and psychological stress it places on people, fatigue, low self-esteem, frustration, and a sense of losing control over their health. The danger is not only physical, it affects a person’s confidence, mental well-being, and overall quality of life.

How does obesity impact children and adolescents in Kuwait? The impact on young people is especially concerning. Childhood obesity leads to physical struggles such as reduced stamina, joint issues, and early signs of metabolic problems, but it also exposes children to bullying, social pressure, and psychological stress. When obesity begins at a young age, it often continues into adulthood, creating long-term health issues. This is why early guidance, education, and family support are crucial in shaping healthier habits from the start. So tell me about your self, How did your journey in nutrition begin, and why did you choose the nutrition major? It’s a good question. Well, it all began at home. My mother was the first person who taught me that health is something we protect, not something we assume will always be there. Long before I knew the science behind nutrition, she shaped my belief that the daily choices we make are what build our future. Later, when the idea of sharing my knowledge publicly came up, my brother and sister became my biggest supporters. They believed in me before I believed in myself. They were the ones who said, “Start Health Talk. People need to hear your voice.” Their belief became the foundation of everything I built after. What shaped your professional experience? My experience grew from years of working across Kuwait’s public hospitals and clinics, where I met people with different health conditions, challenges, and stories. One of the most defining chapters of my career was my time in the obesity and surgical clinic. There, I witnessed how deeply weight struggles are connected not only to food but also to emotions, stress, lifestyle, and personal history. It taught me that nutrition is never just a meal plan; it’s a human experience. What was the biggest lesson you learned while working in the obesity and surgical clinic? I realized that many people see healthy eating as something they will “start later,” even when they are willing to undergo major surgery or live with years of discomfort. But later rarely comes. That realization

changed my entire approach. People don’t need more fear or pressure; they need understanding, guidance, and a plan that feels possible. Healthy habits should be the first thing we care about, not the last. Why did you create Health Talk? I created Health Talk to make nutrition feel human, practical, and comforting, not overwhelming. I wanted a space where people feel understood before they are told what to change. Health Talk is not a strict diet page. It’s a place where compassion meets science, where every person’s story matters, and where guidance feels personal rather than clinical. What makes your approach different? I don’t believe in generic plans. I believe in listening. Every person has their own lifestyle, emotions, work schedule, and habits, and a truly effective plan must respect that. Personalized consultation is not a luxury; it’s the only way real, lasting change can happen. Why is follow-up an essential part of weight loss? Because the real transformation happens after the plan is made. Follow-up is where we adjust, correct, motivate, rebuild habits, and celebrate progress. It’s where people learn that a bad day doesn’t erase weeks of effort, and that they’re not alone on their journey. Follow-up turns a goal into a lifestyle. What do people misunderstand most about weight loss? People think weight loss is only about food. But it’s also about stress, sleep, emotions, hormones, routines, and self-belief. Weight reflects your whole life, not just your plate. That’s why I focus on understanding the person deeply, then building a plan that fits who they are, not who they “should” be. What can someone expect when joining your programs or following Health Talk? They can expect honesty, support, and real guidance, not unrealistic promises. Life in Kuwait is busy and stressful, and I understand that. I help people improve step by step, without pressure or

perfectionism. My goal isn’t just weight loss; it’s better energy, better sleep, better confidence, and a healthier relationship with food. What message do you want to leave readers with? Change doesn’t have to be dramatic. It just needs to be sincere. Your journey begins the moment you choose yourself, even with one small decision. If you’re ready for a real, sustainable, reliastic approach to health, I welcome you to my world at Health Talk. The first step might feel small… but it may become the moment that transforms your life. ENGINEER INNER JOY

Create Lasting Happiness in the New Year By bazaar Staff

As the new year approaches, many people welcome the possibility of a fresh start- a chance to reset priorities, feel more balanced, and rediscover joy. Yet even with the best intentions, the enthusiasm of January often fades by the time everyday pressures regain momentum. Work deadlines, family responsibilities, digital noise, and the constant push to stay productive tend to override the calm we hoped a new year would bring. The truth is, lasting joy does not arrive with a date on the calendar; it grows when our inner world becomes steady and aligned.

More people today are beginning to see that outer achievements alone cannot guarantee inner ease. It is increasingly common to hear individuals describe a persistent undercurrent of stress, scattered attention, or emotional heaviness despite doing well professionally or socially. This is not a personal shortcoming; it is simply the impact of modern life’s relentless pace. The key question, then, is how to create inner stability that can support our goals instead of being shaken by them. This is where the idea of Inner Engineering becomes relevant — a set of practical tools designed to help individuals cultivate clarity, balance, and emotional resilience from within. Offered by Sadhguru, a yogi, mystic, and visionary, Inner Engineering focuses on reorganizing one’s inner experience rather than chasing external fixes. As he explains, “Inner Engineering is neither a religion nor a philosophy or dogma; it is a technology for wellbeing and self-transformation.”

52

It frames wellbeing not as an abstract pursuit but as a learnable process, much like adopting a new skill or lifestyle habit. The tools taught include a simple 21-minute daily practice and guided methods for aligning the body, mind, emotions, and energy. While this may sound subtle, the changes people report are often both practical and profound. Many describe being able to pause before reacting in stressful situations, experiencing a clearer mind, or finding renewed focus in their work. Others notice a sense of ease in the body that makes everyday tasks feel less strenuous, as though internal friction has reduced. For some, the shift is even more remarkable. Eloria, a U.S. Army veteran from Palau and Guam who had endured years of mental health challenges and even a cardiac arrest, shared that after Inner Engineering, she found herself “just being happy that I could just sit under this tree… smell the flowers… see how green the grass is.”

What once felt dull or heavy became alive again. Nina, a Ukrainian living in Dubai, had a similar experience. “My depression and dark feelings disappeared like they never happened. It was like a huge stone fell from my back. My mind became clear, my experience of the world around me became different. No stress or anxiety would ever bother me. It’s hard to believe, but it IS POSSIBLE,” she says. These stories reflect a common theme: when the inner system is in balance, life does not necessarily change — our experience of it does. Entering the new year with such inner steadiness allows personal goals, relationships, and responsibilities to unfold with far greater ease. Instead of seeking joy in the world, we begin to generate it from within, creating a foundation that supports us throughout the year ahead.

HOMESCHOOLED

JUST WATCH ME

By Stefan Merrill Block, Memoir

By Lior Torenberg, Fiction

Dell Danvers is out of options: unemployed, drowning in bills, and fighting to keep her comatose sister on life support. In desperation, she launches a weeklong livestream to raise the money she needs, quickly gaining attention for her sharp humor and reckless stunts. As her fame grows and a mysterious troll threatens to expose her past, Dell spirals deeper into the addictive, unforgiving world of online performance. Told over seven intense days, this bold, darkly funny debut explores grief, ambition, and the dangerous line between being watched and truly being seen.

In this tender, unsettling, and often darkly funny memoir, Stefan Merrill Block recounts the years his mother pulled him from school to “save his creativity,” transforming their living room into a classroom governed by love, fear, and her increasingly eccentric ideas. Hidden from the outside world until high school, Stefan’s return to public education becomes a jarring reawakening. Both a portrait of a mother’s consuming devotion and a revealing look at the unregulated world of homeschooling, it’s a moving story of identity, independence, and the cost of shaping a life in isolation.

THE UNWRITTEN RULES OF MAGIC

THE OTHER SIDE OF CHANGE By Maya Shankar, Nonfiction

By Harper Ross, Magical Realism

After her father’s funeral, Emerson Clarke steals his forbidden vintage typewriter and discovers it has the power to make whatever she writes come true. As she rewrites small moments of her life in hopes of creating happiness for herself and her estranged daughter, Emerson uncovers unsettling truths woven through her family’s past. Each wish carries a cost, and the more she alters reality, the more fragile it becomes. A moving, multigenerational story about memory, grief, and choosing an unscripted life over a perfect illusion.

Cognitive scientist Maya Shankar explores how unexpected upheavals reshape our lives and us. Through stories from people who’ve faced dramatic turning points and insights from years of research, she reveals how disruption can spark new strengths, perspectives, and values. Thoughtful and reassuring, this book offers a compassionate guide to discovering who we can become when life takes an unexpected turn.

WHERE STORIES MEET COMMUNITY How the PCC Library Is Redefining Reading, Access, and Shared Culture in Kuwait By bazaar Staff In a time when most daily interactions are filtered through screens and speed, the quiet presence of a library feels almost radical. It asks us to slow down, to sit with ideas, to listen to other voices, and to remember that learning is not only personal but communal. This is the philosophy at the heart of the PCC Library, a community-driven cultural space developed by Promenade Culture Centre that places reading, curiosity, and shared knowledge at the center of everyday life in Kuwait. What began as a modest initiative to support creative writing workshops and children’s programs has steadily grown into a living, breathing library that serves readers of all ages. Today, the PCC Library welcomes children discovering their first favorite stories, teenagers exploring new ideas and identities, and adults returning to the pleasure of reading for its own sake. It is not a library built around silence alone, but around connection, reflection, and growth. Libraries have always been more than rooms filled with books. At their best, they function as safe spaces for imagination, learning, and belonging. They are places where people encounter perspectives beyond their own and where communities quietly shape their collective memory. The PCC Library embraces this role fully, positioning itself as both a cultural anchor and a social space that invites people to linger, explore, and return. The collection itself reflects this intention. Carefully curated and bilingual, it spans picture books, fiction and non-fiction, novels, poetry, encyclopedias, and thoughtfully selected bilingual titles. The themes woven throughout the shelves speak to learning, diversity, heritage, and cultural awareness. This is not a library focused on volume alone, but on relevance and resonance. Each book is chosen with the reader in mind, whether that reader is five or fifty. For children, the library opens a doorway into storytelling and language at an early age, reinforcing the idea that books are not assignments but companions. For young people, it offers a space to explore curiosity beyond the classroom, encouraging independent thinking and a deeper relationship with reading. For adults, it serves as a reminder that learning does not end with formal education, and that reading can be both grounding and expansive at any stage of life. The physical space of the PCC Library plays a key role in shaping this experience. Designed to feel welcoming rather than intimidating, it balances calm with warmth. Visitors are encouraged to browse freely, to sit and read, or simply to exist among books. The atmosphere supports quiet exploration while still allowing for conversation and community interaction, reflecting the belief that libraries can be both reflective and social. 62

One of the most meaningful aspects of the PCC Library is its accessibility. Membership is completely free, and borrowing books comes with no fees. This decision is more than logistical. It is a statement of values. By removing financial barriers, the library reinforces the idea that access to knowledge and culture should never be limited by circumstance. Reading becomes a shared right rather than a privilege, and the act of borrowing a book feels uncomplicated and welcoming. As the community around the library has grown, so has its role. The PCC Library has evolved into an educational and cultural hub, hosting reading sessions and activities, particularly for children. These moments transform reading into a collective experience, where stories are shared aloud, questions are encouraged, and imagination is nurtured together. In doing so, the library helps build a foundation for lifelong learning that begins with joy rather than obligation.

Community spaces like this are increasingly vital, especially in urban environments where opportunities for meaningful gathering can feel limited. Libraries offer a rare neutrality. They are not built around consumption, yet they exist within daily life. The PCC Library’s location within a commercial setting makes its presence even more distinctive. Operating as a public cultural space inside a retail environment, it challenges expectations and expands the idea of where culture belongs. This unique model positions the PCC Library at the intersection of community library, cultural center, and educational platform. It demonstrates that cultural spaces do not need to be isolated or formal to be impactful. Instead, they can exist alongside everyday routines, inviting people to step in, even briefly, and engage with something deeper. In Kuwait, where conversations around culture, heritage, and community are continually evolving, the PCC Library offers a quiet yet powerful

contribution. It affirms that reading is not an individual act alone, but a collective one. That libraries are not relics of the past, but essential tools for building thoughtful, connected societies. And that community spaces grounded in knowledge and openness have the power to shape not only readers, but relationships. The PCC Library stands as a reminder that culture thrives when it is shared, accessible, and lived. In its shelves, its seating, and its growing community of readers, it reflects a simple but enduring truth. When people are given space to read, learn, and gather, communities grow stronger, one story at a time.

THE FUTURE OF PERFORMANCE

Inside the World Premiere of Toyota’s GR GT and GR GT3 By bazaar staff

When Toyota GAZOO Racing (TGR) pulls the cover off a new model, the automotive world pays attention. When they reveal two, both designed to redefine the boundaries of road-legal and track-dominant performance, the moment becomes a milestone. At this year’s world premiere, TGR introduced its newest flagships: the GR GT and the GR GT3. One is built for the road, the other for the starting grid, but together they represent the pinnacle of Toyota’s motorsport-bred philosophy. These two machines are more than new entries in Toyota’s performance lineup. They carry forward a lineage that stretches back to icons like the Toyota 2000GT. At their core is a mission that has shaped TGR’s identity from the beginning: to develop everbetter cars by learning from the extreme pressures of motorsport. As Akio Toyoda, known behind the wheel as Master Driver Morizo, often repeats, racing is not a marketing exercise for Toyota. It is an engineering laboratory. A Unified Vision for Speed In recent years, TGR has brought together all of Toyota’s global racing programs under one integrated banner. Whether competing in the World Endurance Championship, World Rally Championship, or domestic series in Japan, the aim has been consistent: use motorsport to accelerate

real-world technological advancement. The GR GT and GR GT3 are the clearest expressions of this philosophy to date. Both models were created using a strict driverfirst development approach. Every decision, from chassis rigidity to aerodynamic load, considers what the driver will feel behind the wheel. And while the GR GT and GR GT3 serve different purposes, they share three core principles: an ultra-low center of gravity, low weight with exceptional rigidity, and aerodynamic efficiency pushed to its limits. Meet the New Flagships The GR GT is Toyota’s new road-legal halo sports car, developed around the idea of taking a pure race car philosophy and making it accessible to drivers on public roads. Its target system output exceeds 650 PS, powered by a newly developed hybrid setup

that pairs a 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo engine with a single electric motor. This pairing represents a new step for Toyota, combining electrification with visceral combustion-engine performance. One of the GR GT’s most significant innovations is its all-aluminum body frame, the first of its kind for Toyota. The reduced weight, paired with a focus on structural rigidity, gives the car a responsiveness and stability usually reserved for professional race cars. Its counterpart, the GR GT3, has been engineered from the ground up as a customer racing machine. Built to FIA GT3 specifications, it targets a system torque of more than 850 Nm. Under the hood is the same 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo hybrid engine, tuned for uncompromising competition performance. The GR GT3 is designed not only to compete but to win, giving racing teams around the world a new benchmark.

Power, Purpose, and Precision Every detail in both vehicles has been refined with purpose. The design process followed a reverse methodology, focusing first on perfecting aerodynamics and cooling performance before locking in exterior styling. This results in cars shaped by function, not fashion, although the final forms are undeniably striking. Behind the scenes, the development process has been a showcase of Toyota’s one-team philosophy. Akio Toyoda led the program with a team of experienced professional drivers, including Tatsuya Kataoka, Hiroaki Ishiura, and Naoya Gamou, along with gentleman driver Daisuke Toyoda. Engineers and drivers collaborated closely, integrating real-time feedback into every stage of development. This direct loop between cockpit and workshop is what gives the GR GT and GR GT3 their motorsport DNA. Looking Toward 2027 While the world has now seen both models, development is far from finished. TGR is continuing extensive testing using advanced driving simulators, as well as real-world sessions on some of the world’s most challenging circuits, including the legendary Nürburgring. This ongoing refinement ensures that by the time these models reach customers, they will embody the peak of Toyota’s engineering capability. Toyota is targeting a launch around 2027 for both the GR GT and the GR GT3. Until then, anticipation is set to build. These cars are not merely future models; they are a statement of Toyota GAZOO Racing’s vision for the next era of performance. Crafted with precision, shaped by competition, and designed to thrill, the GR GT and GR GT3 mark a new chapter in Toyota’s pursuit of driving excellence. If this is the future of motorsport-inspired engineering, it looks fast, powerful, and incredibly exciting. For more information, visit toyota.com.kw, call 1803803, or follow @toyotakw on Instagram.
