Bayview Glen Summer Camp 2023: Another Great Success We must have blinked as another AMAZING Summer is officially in the books at Bayview Glen Day Camp! From the turf field to the playground, from the robotics room to the art studio, and from the gyms to the theatre, the sounds of laughter and friendship filled the air for all seven-weeks of the camp programme!
work with our Trailblazer and Maverick campers. Little Yogis Academy joined the BVG programme for the very first time to work with the Wildlings. Last but not least, The Rail Yard Wake & Aqua Park hosted our lake days camp and boasted the largest water inflatable park in the GTA. There is nothing like getting in the lake and on the lake on hot days during the Summer months!
Once again, we welcomed hundreds of Bayview Glen students during the Summer of 2023. Many Lower School students joined us for their very first camp experience and had an absolute BLAST in the Wildling Camp programme! We also welcomed a number of BVG Upper School students as campers, Leaders in Training, and staff members as well. We could not be more proud of the way the BVG Camp programme and both the Upper and Lower Schools are collaboratively creating a whole child approach when it comes to year-round experiences for our community!
Perhaps most notably, our inclusion programme was the obvious heartbeat of the overall camp programme. Campers needing additional support to thrive within our camp programme were guided by our amazing one-on-one facilitation counsellors who ensured each inclusion camper participated right alongside campers their own age. Our hearts were full in seeing these campers participate in musical theatre performances, try archery for the first time, and make brand new friends! As our inclusion programme continues to grow, we look forward to welcoming even more inclusion campers into the camp programme next year!
New this Summer was our partnership with Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids)! We were able to assist Archie’s Cochlear Implant Laboratory by providing youth in their programme with a day camp experience where their dexterity and reaction time could be tracked and documented through daily on-site testing. It was so wonderful to have members of the SickKids staff team on-site throughout the Summer! This partnership allowed us to welcome some amazing new individuals into our camp community whom we hope to see again soon. We look forward to continuing to grow our partnership moving forward! We also created new partnerships with some fantastic programme providers this Summer! Everblast Play Company brought their immersive activities each day of the Summer to

As always, the success of our camp programme hinges on our BVG Camp staff team! The dedication, commitment, and hard work that was demonstrated by each staff member this Summer is what made the Summer of 2023 such a resounding success! As the Summer is now officially in the “rearview mirror”, we begin looking forward to BVG Camp’s after school programme offerings beginning this October! We will be offering both a basketball and soccer programme during the first semester of the school year. So, just because Summer is over doesn’t mean the fun has to stop! Please keep your eyes peeled for more information regarding these exciting after school programs coming soon!

Our faculty and staff have already spent the past six months researching key information through their Discovery Teams at the local, national and international levels within the following areas: Health and Well-being, Environmental Sustainability, and Academic Innovation. The three Discovery Teams will be presenting their recommendations to the Leadership Team this fall to help identify some key areas of our School’s strategic focus over the next five years. It is truly an exciting time to be at Bayview Glen.

How to Tackle Back to School Blues
W
hile some may be excited to come back to school after being gone for two months, many students and staff are facing the back-to-school blues, as they struggle to get back into the early morning, all day, everyday schedules. Back to school is a time of transition and can bring on fears for many students. They must now contend with the stark reality that life is not a long vacation. The ones who had friendship troubles at the end of the school year may find themselves endlessly pondering how to manage now that they will see them again, wondering if they will be in the same class as those with whom they had conflict or will they be in the same class with their besties. Some are already worrying about teachers, making friends, and about homework even before the first lesson is taught.
to strengthen connection and communication skills between adult and child. Parents should not forget to talk about how things are going socially, not just academically. Always encourage a positive mindset.
You may not know what your child is going through without communication and paying attention to behaviour. In the early weeks after students start getting back into the routine of coming to school, keep the lines of communication open so you will know how they are coping. If students are worried about school, help calm their fears by listening, show them you are interested, as you try to understand and validate their concerns/feelings. An adult sharing a past experience when they experienced fear about something new can help to normalize these feelings and provide a good opportunity
Creating a routine adds structure to the day, helps children feel safe and increases productivity. It also helps our mental health and well-being as it leads to a reduction in stress levels. Consider engaging your child when you create a routine and set expectations, so they know what to expect in their day, when to prep for school, do homework, relax, sleep, etc. If you meet resistance, encourage your child to accept and embrace change. Let them know they are not alone and be flexible to change things up, as required.

Anxiety about school can manifest in multiple ways. Look out for signs such as constant tears, uncharacteristically avoidance about school or school activities, especially when they are usually excited. Empower students by reminding them they are strong and can push through their fears by challenging their anxious thoughts. Remind them of a time when they showed courage and were able to overcome their fears. Remind them they are brave. Always address the emotion they shared so they feel heard. It is through communication that you will be able to ascertain between normal worry versus severe anxiety.
Changes to Our Food Service Provider! On August 25, 2023, Bayview Glen began its partnership with a new food service provider, Chartwells, to bring a fresh and exciting culinary journey to our campuses. This is a significant and positive change that will enhance the dining experience for our students, faculty, staff, and families. Our commitment to providing the best possible environment for learning extends beyond the classroom and into our Dining Halls. After careful consideration and thorough evaluation, we selected Chartwells to be our exclusive partner in delivering high-quality meals that align with our mission of nurturing the whole child.

This partnership ensures that

A Smooth Transition: We understand that change can raise questions, and the Chartwells team is working closely with BVG leadership to ensure a seamless shift in service. Global Education
Michelle Yarndley, Director of Global Education
International Qualifications Since its founding more than 60 years ago, our school's mission has been to develop well-rounded individuals who can make a positive impact on the world. To support this, we offer a range of Global Experiential Learning programming that focusses on building key competencies for active citizenship and global understanding across all grade levels. For students who are particularly interested in the Round Square IDEALS (Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership and Service), we offer The Duke of Edinburgh International Award and the Global Studies Certificate in the Upper School. Our participation in The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is grounded in our core values of Respect, Responsibility, Compassion, Integrity, Balance, and Equity. It challenges our students to develop their character through Service, Skill Development, Physical Recreation, Adventurous Journeys, and a Residential Project. Our students have found unique and diverse ways to give back to their community, engage with nature, and try new activities while earning the Award.

Environmental Stewardship for a Greener Future Bayview Glen has achieved Gold-level certification from EcoSchools for its outstanding environmental leadership. During the 2022-2023 academic year, Bayview Glen successfully completed 15 sustainability projects across all three divisions of the school curriculum, including environmental action planning, environmental literacy, an environmental conference, a rewilding service project, a GOOS paper campaign, water quality testing, Take Me Outside Day, diverting textile waste, One Million Beehives fundraising and awareness, repurposing and innovative recycling, tree and shrub planting, indoor food garden, sustainable cooking, school-based composting, and creating homes for wildlife. As a community, EcoSchools completed 17,000 climate actions and students spent over 700,000 hours learning outdoors. Together, we are empowering young leaders to take action on climate issues.
We also believe in teaching our students to think beyond their borders, appreciate different perspectives, and collaborate on solutions for complex problems. This is why we have designed the Global Studies Certificate (GSC) as a specialized credential for Upper School students. The GSC is increasingly recognized by universities and employers as evidence of career and future readiness. It demonstrates that our students are global citizens who are ready to build a more just, healthy, and sustainable world. To earn the GSC, Upper School students must select courses with an international focus, participate in global experiences, join a co-curricular club or activity with an international connection, and act on an issue with global dimensions.

s educators, we recognize the importance of September as a fresh start and an opportunity for growth. With new beginnings on our horizon, we are excited for the connections, relationships, and learning that is to come. As we embark on this new school year, we remain committed to delivering an exceptional educational experience for our students by cultivating a community that is dedicated to the success of our students, and creating an environment that focusses on well-being and a sense of belonging. In an ever-evolving world of education, providing children with a stimulating and nurturing environment is crucial for their overall growth and development. We are thrilled to introduce Reggio-inspired furniture to our Preschool and Junior Kindergarten classrooms. This latest addition aims to enhance the learning experience of our young learners.

With the addition of innovative furniture, we aim to foster creativity, curiosity, and collaboration among our students. We know as educators that the environment plays a fundamental role in shaping a child’s experience, creativity, and social interactions and we worked to curate items that create a balance between natural materials, aesthetic appeal, and functionality encouraging our students to embrace autonomy that is open-ended to foster collaboration. We are grateful for the continuous support of our generous donors and philanthropic endeavours, as it allows us to invest in our wonderful educational programmes. Your contributions have made a significant impact on our community of learners, and we extend our heartfelt appreciation for your ongoing support. Together, we will continue to cultivate a community that is dedicated to the success of each one of our students and create an environment that fosters growth, confidence, and wonder. elcome back to school, students, parents, families, and members of our Bayview Glen community. As Mark Twain once said, “The secret to getting ahead is getting started.” I am excited to get ahead during the 2023-2024 school year by getting started on the right pathway forward. As you notice through the year, there are some wonderful additions to the Lower School that will help make this a reality. The new and improved north wing of the school is open again and will be housing our BG3 and SK classes. You will also see that Music, Art, and French classes from Grade 1 and up will have their own classrooms. Our JK friends have moved back to the first floor where all classrooms have been renovated with new furniture that align with our Whole Child, Whole Life, Whole World mission statement. As well, our Health Centre is now opened and is being run by our first school nurse, Ms. Davies will be bringing her vision and care to our day to day lives and work with our community and the Director of Well-Being, Ms. Morgan, to ensure our students are healthy and ready to strive and thrive through the year.
Lower School House Celebration
Along with the physical changes and new additions, I am excited to work with our Communications Team to introduce the Parent Hub to our Lower School Community. This is a space where parents will be able to find useful links that help throughout the year. One item that can be found there is how to get the proper paperwork completed to become a Parent Volunteer. Parent volunteering is a big part of the Lower School success plan and the forms within the Parent Hub will guide you through how to be a volunteer. Lastly, and most importantly, I am excited to see our students engage in learning. Planning with the Director of Teaching and Learning, Ms. Gillespie, over the summer has been exciting, and our teachers are ready to challenge the Lower School students in ways that will help them grow their knowledge, skills and confidence. Our goal is to have our students continue to take responsibility for who they are as dynamic learners and citizens within our BVG community. Through this year, know that I always have time to listen, and together we are going to get ahead. Jesse Denison Head of Lower School and Preschool

warm welcome and welcome back to all! I hope that the summer provided you some time to rest, relax and enjoy the company of family and friends.
As is tradition, I open each new school year by reflecting on the words of wisdom imparted in the valedictory address. Riya Varia, Valedictorian for last year's graduating class, inspired us with her heartwarming and humorous tribute to the Class of 2023. Not only did she honour her classmates by commemorating their many unique talents and the great memories they’ve shared over the years, she offered up golden nuggets of advice. What resonated with me most was how Riya spoke about the importance of ‘showing up’ as our authentic selves and about seizing opportunities to make a difference: “There is never an end to preparation. As high school students, we will still be preparing for our next chapter. And if we are constantly preparing to prepare for more preparation, at what point do we ideate to innovate to then generate? Let that marinate. In short, it’s time to just do it. It’s never too early to do impactful things in our lives.” Riya and her fellow graduates are members of a generation that ideate and innovate as easily as they solve for x in Math class. They are compassionate problem solvers who are committed to making the world a better and kinder place. This makes for a very exciting time in
the Prep School and in education overall. It also reminds us that our future is in great hands. On a more personal note, as I write this article, my daughter Sara, has folded and tucked away her Bayview Glen uniform; she is joining a new school community for the first time since Preschool but will never forget her days at BVG. Over that last 15 years, many outstanding people have provided Sara with direction, motivation, skills, insights, support and compassion. They have ‘had her back’, made her smile, made her think, showed her the power of possibility, and given her countless chances to believe in herself. It took this village, and, as a parent, I wish to thank everyone she met along the way in this very important leg of her life’s journey. Your involvement has made all the difference in both our lives. I count myself lucky to be part of such a vibrant community of thinkers and doers and am honoured to work alongside a team of educators who support one another in their enthusiastic pursuit of excellence in teaching and mentorship. Together we look forward to another great year at the Prep School! Kindest regards, Dina Astrella Head of Prep School
Grade 8 Valedictorian Address 2023 By: Riya Varia
Good evening to our incredible Bayview Glen Community, esteemed faculty and administrators, family and friends, and fellow students. My name is Riya Varia and I am honoured to share a few words on behalf of our Graduating Prep School Class of 2023. In thinking about what to say this evening, I started reflecting. What exactly are we here to celebrate? Well, we have just successfully navigated three years of Prep School - preparatory school - a school to get us ready for high school. We’re here to celebrate this preparation. 14
April 20232023 February September 2023 bayviewglen.ca bayviewglen.ca bayviewglen.ca
Inventor Alexander Graham Bell was completely dialed in when he once said, "Before anything else, preparation is the key to success." Few quotes ring truer. Shoutout to the dad jokes at assembly! In September, we will be highschoolers, given powers of independence, selecting our own courses, forging our own learning paths, and most importantly, stuffing our stomachs with those delicious mini pizzas. And the past three years at BVG have prepared us for these high school years ahead. We learned to be ready for things that are impossible to prepare for. We successfully navigated entry into the
Prep School during COVID-19 and figured out how to manage online school and work the mute button… most of the time. We have grown stronger in academics - from our Problem-Based Learning course addressing real-world issues to an incredible curriculum providing life-changing skills. I can’t wait for the day I get to use Iambic Pentameter or quickly calculate the shortest distance to cross the street using the Pythagorean Theorem. We have also grown wiser from sports - from our victories, we’ve had many of them - to our devastating defeat in the student-teacher volleyball game which taught us about respecting the underdog, and the elderly. We learned that sometimes good things take time. Band masterpieces after months of practice, my favourite cheese curds at the end of the long lunch line, and maybe even a second-round win for the Leafs after years…decades of waiting. We also learned to embrace change. We've seen the Pride Flag raised at BVG for the first time, we’re figuring out how human intelligence fits into this new world with artificial intelligence, and we’ve moved through dance trends from the Floss to the Griddy faster than Mr. Moore’s sick, slick, and quick, lip-smacking rapping tribute to Fiji Basiji. But just as important, our years at BVG have taught us more about ourselves. Aristotle, a Greek philosopher, once said, “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” But the same words were perhaps more eloquently voiced by one of the greatest philosophers of this century. Eminem. He said: “Would the real Slim Shady please stand up?” And so, as we embark on the journey to new classrooms in the same building, or sadly some to new schools entirely, let’s let the real Slim Shady in each of us shine through. There is never an end to preparation. As high school students, we will still be preparing for our next chapter. And if we are constantly preparing to prepare for more preparation, at what point do we ideate to innovate to then generate? Let that marinate. In short, it’s time to just do it. It’s never too early to do impactful things in our lives, like Frank Epperson, who invented the popsicle at age 11. Pretty cool. Or George Nissen, who invented the trampoline at age 16. I wonder how he jumped to that idea? Just like Frank and George, our Grade 8 class has the talent to make an impact! Among us are some really special musicians. Singers who can take me to church any day of the week, an amazing flautist as graceful as a Swan, and pianists who have
unleashed their finger fury at Carnegie Hall. Not to mention, we have the greatest musical group of our generation, better than Spice Girls, better than Destiny’s Child, none other than the Unicorn Furies. And our talent is not limited to music. Our class has incredible artists, track stars, mad scientists, mathies, ballers, swimmers and synchros, robot whisperers – the list could go on. Among us is one of the greatest comedians of our time, keeping our funny bones tickled and pancakes fresh and the most elite water-tasting connoisseur of our generation. So why not use our very unique talents to do something impactful right now, instead of waiting until we’re old and grey… like my dad over there. Speaking of my dad, we are here today because of the people on this journey with us, and on behalf of our graduating class, I would like to say thank you to this special group. To our parents and guardians for being our biggest cheerleaders and personal chauffeurs throughout our Prep School journey. Thank you for your endless support and love, and for always reminding us how you never had the internet when you were younger. Thank you to our teachers for enduring our endless questions, supporting us on our learning journey and putting up with all the times our minds wandered. Thank you, Ms. Astrella, for providing us with your words of wisdom and encouraging us to pursue our dreams. And thank you Mr. Lee, for reminding us that kindness is the true mark of a great BVG student. I would be remiss not to mention an outstanding mentor who joined us this last year. You answered our most thoughtprovoking questions and guided us to heights well beyond Grade 8. Thank you, ChatGPT. As we leave this school, I know we'll look back with nostalgia over all these amazing memories in Prep. Mr. C, I hope you drop into our classes on Friday to play the Friday song from time to time. We won't know exactly what high school will bring but this is the exciting part. Maybe high school is where we'll find the blue Lollies that are always missing from our cafeteria. So now… it seems fitting to wrap up this speech with what else but with a rap, or rather words from the philosopher Eminem: “Look if you had one shot, one opportunity, to seize everything you ever wanted, in one moment, would you capture it or just let it slip.” BVG graduating Prep School Class of 2023 – classmates, teammates, friends, you are all the real Slim Shadys. I hope you will always remember the incredible memories we’ve shared together, and as we move forward into high school, never forget to lose yourself in the moment and own it. Thank you. 15

inston Churchill famously said, “never let a good crisis go to waste” when working to form the United Nations after WWII. While we excitedly returned to many pre-pandemic routines, traditions, and programming last year, it is equally important for us not to let the lessons learned from the pandemic go to waste.
even more individualized learning and support so that all students in the Upper School can move confidently through their mathematics journey and can continue to meet the demands of a changing post-secondary landscape.
As leaders in whole child education, we at Bayview Glen are always considering what must be embedded within our programming. We want to ensure that our students are challenged by an enriched, forward-looking curriculum that is strongly supported with resources. As such, more opportunities for our students to have personalized learning is something that we see as a necessary takeaway from the pandemic.
Upper School teachers continue to learn and lead through faculty-developed professional development around how to respond to AI in education, and how to embed Indigenous knowledge to enrich the education of our students – ensuring we are continuously responding to and embracing the evolution of education.
Starting this September, all students in the Upper School will have access to a dedicated Math Lab. This lab, which will be run by BVG math teachers, will allow students to drop in to receive targeted support in math. It will also allow for more enrichment and personalized challenge. The Math Lab is an important step towards
In addition, we have added another Learning Strategist in the Upper School faculty to provide more access to learning strategies, study strategies, and individualized academic support for our students.
As we enter a new era in education, we will continue to be at the forefront of innovation. We are excited to see these new supports in action here at the Upper School and look forward to an excellent year. Fiona Fenili Head of Upper School
Staff Profile: Katrina Cortez Upper School Student Services Advisor Hello everyone! I’m very excited to join Bayview Glen this year as the new Upper School Student Services Advisor. I have worked in the education industry for over 10 years in both the UK and Canada, and I cannot imagine working in any other field! After graduating from the University of Toronto in 2010, I spent the early years of my career as a classroom teacher. I taught students from Grades 5-12; specifically in English, ESL, and Social Science. Four years ago, I made the decision to step out of the classroom to work in an administrative capacity. Since then, I’ve worked in student services supporting students and their families as they navigate their academic journey.

While I believe in celebrating our students’ academic successes, I strongly believe in supporting their physical, mental, and emotional well-being too. My experience has taught me that learning can take place well beyond the walls of a classroom, and I’ve enjoyed supporting students through a variety of co-curricular activities and projects; this makes me even more excited to be a part of Bayview Glen’s dynamic school community. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time reading, watching movies, and travelling with my family. Katrina Cortez Upper School Student Services Advisor
Grade 12 Valedictorian Address 2023
By: Ashley Yeung
Hello! Esteemed guests and class of 2023! Welcome! You’ve made it. Congratulations. I am Ashley Yeung, and I am so grateful to be this year’s valedictorian. Firstly, much like most things in life, I did not do this alone. So, inspired by Ryan and James, I want to tell you something about this class. I want to tell you that each and every one of the 78 individuals seated here makes up a star chart that burns so incredibly bright. In this year alone, we’ve managed to put on a full-scale debate tournament, the most technically challenging play in Bayview Glen’s history, hold more than 50 student engagement events, visit four different countries, write more than a hundred AP exams, present an in-person art show, and make it to FRC nationals…and this is only some of the year. This is a class of leaders, dreamers, trailblazers, and scholars. A class that spends so much time with their heads turned towards the stars, chasing a multitude of dreams, that they too often forget that we have so very much to pause and be proud of. We, the perseverant. The class that made it through three different types of semester systems in four years.
But now, we venture out into the world, dispersing through the cosmos on our own. Now, it’s time we figure out who each of you will become. Up until now, you’ve had guidelines and checklists to direct you as you pursue your futures. And now, it feels like you float on alone. It’s exciting, thrilling even. The possibilities of where you can go from here are endless. But endless can be intimidating. Alone means you are miles away from what you once knew as safe and familiar. But don’t forget. you’ve laid the groundwork. Through your whole lives, you’ve lived, you’ve failed, you’ve succeeded, and you’ve grown, and those experiences will carry forward with you. Those all-nighters, those tears you’ve shed, those hours you’ve spent, all your first highs and first lows, will never be for naught. Maybe your first shot won’t be perfect. Maybe your fourth or fifth won’t. Maybe you’ll fall and it’ll feel like life is running on without you. But look at how far you’ve come, look at all the experience you’ve accumulated in such a short time. You will always get back up. Because just as I am here reading you the ninth draft of this speech, you will revise and continue.

Alumni Relations
Message from the Director of Alumni Relations August quickly fades to September and just like that the summer is done and a new school year is upon us. This is my 17th year as a part of the Bayview Glen community, four as a student and 13 as an alumna and I couldn’t be any more excited to see what this year brings. We look forward to reconnecting, engaging, and reminiscing with BVG alumni while creating new memories through visits, events, and philanthropic work within the school. As we prepare to welcome another class of graduates to the Alumni Association next May, though it sounds like the distant future, trust me, time certainly flies, we look forward to celebrating your accomplishments with you throughout the upcoming year, Class of 2024. Wishing everyone a healthy and exciting September! Daniella Brown ’10 Director of Alumni Relations
Message from the Alumni Association Board The Bayview Glen Alumni Association would like to welcome faculty, students, and parents back for the 2023-2024 school year. Last year over 200 alumni visited Bayview Glen for visits, presentations, career breakfasts and volunteering. This is a testament to Bayview Glen's strong community as well as to the lifelong impact that the school has on its students. This school year we look forward to continue to give back to the school community through career breakfasts, volunteering and mentorship, so that younger versions of ourselves gain the knowledge, skills and motivation to craft the lives they dream of. Wishing all students, parents and faculty all the best this school year! Christian Medeiros '12 Bayview Glen Alumni Association President
