An exciting new program comes to Bay View

OUR MISSION

St. Mary Academy – Bay View is an independent, Catholic school serving a diverse population of girls from Preschool through Grade 12. In the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy, we foster academic excellence in an innovative and creative learning environment.

We are committed to empowering each student to be a confident, independent, compassionate and socially conscious young woman who fully lives her faith.

President’s Message

Dear Bay View Community,

As I prepare my final letter for our school magazine, I find myself reflecting on its title – Bay View Today – and all that it means for our students and community. At its core, Bay View today is what it has always been – a distinctly special Academy dedicated to the holistic education of young women in the Mercy tradition. Throughout its 149-year legacy of educational excellence, Bay View has prepared thousands of young women for a world that relies on their intellect, social awareness, leadership, and commitment to service. This year has been exceptional, and simultaneously no different, as it has contributed to that legacy in ways that leave us all with a profound sense of pride, purpose, and gratitude. Each school year writes its own chapter of the Academy’s storied history and what a year it has been.

As you peruse the pages of this magazine, you will find that Bay View today is a small, private Academy achieving tremendous things – such as four athletic State Championships in this one school year alone. Words are simply inadequate when attempting to express the magnitude of these achievements for our student-athletes, their coaches and parents, and all of us who have enjoyed the historic successes of our Volleyball, Tennis, Basketball, and Lacrosse teams this year. Of course, the same is true for the accomplishments of our Class of 2023, whose members will attend some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the United States. To the credit of our faculty, staff, and administrators, some of whom you will hear from in this magazine, Bay View’s students of all ages thrive in an educational environment designed for active, engaged, and mission-inspired learning.

Within the following articles, you will discover that Bay View today is a place where young girls are nurtured to become leaders through a newly formed Lower School Leadership Team and where young women will soon be invited to become innovators and difference-makers via the Public Health and Life Sciences Scholars Program. Bay View today is also the proud alma mater of esteemed Mercy women – a place where our alumnae are returning home for “Tea Talks” to share their stories of success and where friends and benefactors join us to explain why an all-girls education at Bay View is such a worthy and life-changing investment.

As you know, this year marks the turning of a page for me as my time at Bay View is ending. Having the honor to serve as president for the past six years, I know that Bay View today is a place where one community’s investments of faith, effort, care, and generosity provide limitless opportunities for our students. To all who have a role in these opportunities, including the students, parents, educators, staff, alumnae, and extremely generous benefactors of Bay View, I extend my deepest and most sincere admiration and gratitude. Thank you for your partnership, encouragement, and support over the years. I will forever feel blessed and humbled by the successes we have achieved together and for the opportunities Bay View has provided me. I hope to have made the most of them – for and with you.

To stand on the shoulders of hundreds of Sisters of Mercy and lay partners, each of whom has courageously and skillfully provided the foundation for Bay View today, will always be one of my most cherished gifts.

I am so proud of Bay View today and so confident in what it will be tomorrow because its future is in your good hands. God bless the continuing Legacy of Bay View!

With much gratitude,

From my first day at Bay View, my purpose has been to ensure that we are preparing young women for a world that yearns for their values, talents, and commitment to service as women of Mercy – women who will make a difference.

4 SUMMER 2023

The Legacy of Sister Marybeth Beretta

Among the many qualities that have shaped Sister Marybeth Beretta’s presidency at Bay View, perhaps there is none more prominent than her heartfelt humility. “I have been blessed to stand on the shoulders of the Sisters who came before me and established this wonderful legacy. Their faithfulness to the Academy across many generations has inspired my own commitment to serve the Bay View community with the same fidelity and care that a life in Mercy has provided for me.”

After six years as president, Sister Marybeth will be bidding farewell to Bay View in July – a parting that marks a poignant transition in the Academy’s rich history, given the countless contributions she has made to our community. Those with whom she has partnered over the years on various projects often readily recognize that her loyalty to the Mercy mission and exceptional business acumen set her apart as an educational trailblazer and visionary. To the credit of her leadership, Bay View has elevated its approach to all-girls education and innovative programming by striving to provide a student-centered education that is designed to last a lifetime. “From my first day at Bay View, my purpose has been to ensure that we are preparing young women for a world that yearns for their values, talents, and commitment to service as women of Mercy – women who will make a difference.”

LEADERSHIP BAY VIEW TODAY 5

Upon her arrival in 2017, Sister Marybeth set out to engage in projects, programs, and improvements that would build upon the firm foundation already in place at Bay View. From expanding her leadership team to include administrators in more academically-focused roles to encouraging engaging new curriculum and programs, Sister Marybeth’s efforts have uniquely supported Bay View’s commitment to offering a superior education that is steeped in Mercy values and powered by the Mercy mission.

Acutely aware that the quality of the educational environment has a direct impact on student learning, Sister Marybeth invested much of her time transforming big ideas into major campus improvements that now engage and excite students of all ages. The addition of the Barbara A. Papitto Science and Innovation Center, which is among the most significant achievements of her tenure, will enhance the educational experience at Bay View for years to come. Always quick to credit the collective efforts of the community, Sister Marybeth

noted, “My time at Bay View has been blessed by the many benefactors, alumnae, and parents who have made improvements to our learning spaces possible through their generosity and support of Catholic, all-girls education. I’m grateful to have simply been a small part of stewarding their gifts along the way.”

While the Science and Innovation Center will have a lasting impact on the quality of instruction, interdisciplinary learning, and opportunities for student research, other brick-and-mortar projects completed in the last few years have been just as important to maintaining the school’s physical plant.

“With the generosity of donors and the support of the Board of Trustees, the committees of the Board, and our Buildings and Grounds crew, we were able to undertake a variety of projects - from a campus refresh involving new and modernized classroom furniture to a new roof for Mercy Hall.” Regardless of project size, Sister Marybeth has approached each project with an eye for how to create a welcoming environment that both students and visitors feel as

6 SUMMER 2023

soon as they enter the gates. “Updating Bay View’s campus has its roots in Mercy hospitality for me –we owe it to our students to offer them the best learning environment possible.”

Many would likely agree that her commitment to the infusion of Mercy across all aspects of school life is the most meaningful impact that Sister Marybeth has made on the Bay View community. “Being a Mercy school is a differentiator for us - it shapes the way we educate our girls, defines the values we instill in our students, and influences the ways we relate to one another as members of a mission-inspired community.” In recent years, and in celebration of this community, a full day of activities for Mercy Day has been instituted that gives all students the opportunity to learn more about what it means to be socially conscious, compassionate, and committed to social justice. In the Upper School, students must also complete a Mercy Project prior to graduation, and the Five Core Values of a Mercy Education are now prominently displayed around campus.

Another highlight of Sister Marybeth’s legacy is the statue of Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, that is now a welcoming presence for all who enter Bay View’s gates. With the support of donors, Sister Marybeth commissioned the statue, and the students enjoyed a memorable dedication ceremony upon its completion in 2018. “When I see Catherine’s statue surrounded by students, whether completing work together or just enjoying each other’s friendship, I am moved by the powerful connections between our past and present, and the ties that bind all of us together in Mercy.”

As a school community, Bay View will always be grateful for the ties that bind us to Sister Marybeth – and the sentiment is mutual. “When I leave Bay View, I will remember the blessing it has been for me to be part of such a wonderful community – and I will absolutely miss the energy and joy I experienced with the students.” With her days at Bay View winding down, Sister Marybeth is optimistic for the future of the Academy and knows that the privilege and responsibility of leadership are in good hands. “As a proud alumna of Bay View and a skilled professional in management and leadership, Amy Gravell ’93 has firsthand familiarity with the value of a Mercy education, and I’m confident that Bay View will continue to reach new heights of innovation and success as a result of her stewardship.”

Sister Marybeth knows all about innovation, success, and the value of a Mercy education. Thanks to the forward-thinking progress that her leadership has inspired, the entire Bay View community knows too.

I am moved by the powerful connections between our past and present, and the ties that bind all of us together in Mercy.

The Seeds of Leadership Planted Early

Students learn to be role models of leadership.

At Bay View, Student Council has traditionally been an activity reserved for Middle School and Upper School students. This year, girls in Grades 4 and 5 have enjoyed the opportunity to participate in a newly formed Lower School Student Leadership Team. This inaugural Lower School activity has benefitted not just the students who serve on the team but their peers as well.

Unlike the voting process that takes place for older students, membership in the Student Leadership Team is the result of an application process that gives consideration to a student’s display of good citizenship and

dependability. Once vetted, ten students were selected randomly to become part of the team. Since November, these student leaders, five each from Grades 4 and 5, have met at least once a month. The Student Leadership Team’s mission is to plan activities and undertake service projects that require the support and participation of their fellow students. In this way, they are learning to be role models of leadership and are gaining experience in team building and cooperative efforts.

In-school projects of the team included planning Spirit Days activities and organizing the Pick-Me-Up Cart for Teacher

Appreciation Week. The student leaders created a Google form to learn teachers’ favorite snacks and beverages as a way of showing gratitude. “One student told me how happy she was to see the teachers smile because of their thoughtfulness,” says Karen

Richards, Dean of the Lower School. “We then explored community service activities outside Bay View that have served to open the girls’ eyes to some of the challenges facing people in the larger community.” Their first service project was a Lower School hygiene supply drive for women at Sojourner House, a program for women in crisis. The girls were given an age-appropriate understanding of the circumstances facing these women. Team members visited homerooms to explain to other students what the drive was about and why they should help. The success of the drive led the

students to undertake an even bigger project.

After hearing a presentation by a board member and an employee of the “Books Are Wings” program, The Student Leadership Team launched a book drive for the entire school. “This effort required the student leaders to visit Middle School classrooms and record a PSA for the Upper School that was shown on our in-school television channel,” explains Richards. “The girls had to articulate the importance of collecting books for children who do not have access to books at home or the opportunity to visit a library.” The drive collected more than 1,800 books!

“What has been wonderful to observe is the impact that the Student Leadership Team activities have had on the Lower School students,” says Richards. “The awareness of this group of student leaders has led other students to realize that ‘I can be a leader, too,’ even at these young ages. The success of the community service projects depends on the Student Leadership Team rallying their classmates to participate, and many girls have stepped up to help. In that way, all the girls are seeing how leaders behave and what can be accomplished when everyone works together for a common purpose.”

BAY VIEW TODAY 9
By communicating about the book drive with all students in the Academy, the Student Leadership team was able to collect over 1800 books for the Books are Wings program, which puts books into the hands of children in need.

Inspiration Served with a Cup of Tea

The power of storytelling is well documented, and who better to tell stories of the many places a Bay View education may lead than our own community members? This year a new speaker series called Tea Talks was introduced to our Middle and Upper School students. Loosely based on TED Talks, the goal of the series is to introduce students to strong and dynamic women who make the world a more just and interesting place.

The name of the series is born out of Sister of Mercy’s founder Catherine McAuley’s belief that conversations are more enjoyable over a “comfortable cup of tea.” Student moderators who are members of Bay View TV introduce guests to the audience, which is comprised of students in Grades 6 through 12. Presenters give a 30–40-minute talk and participate in a 15–20-minute question and answer session.

“We have a serious commitment to our students to nurture their talents and dreams so that they can be inspired to change the world for the better,” says Bay View Principal Dr. Marcela Rossi. “Hearing from our graduates and friends about how they have made positive impacts--particularly where they have been guided by the Mercy values of dignity, excellence, justice, service, and stewardship-- is very motivating.”

The Honorable Maureen McKenna Goldberg shared many words of wisdom and great humor in her conversation with hosts Claire T. and Semiha S.

This year’s speakers offered myriad perspectives and life experiences. The series kicked off in October with an interview with Joy Fox ’95. Fox discussed her path from journalism to state government. The following month Bay View benefactor Barbara Papitto discussed the value of an all-girls education and why she supports the Academy. Vandell Andrade ’12 gave a spirited talk in January about her interesting journey from Bay View graduate to professional basketball player in Spain to her current position as a Rhode Island State Trooper.

In March, the Honorable Maureen McKenna Goldberg ‘69, the first woman named to the Rhode Island Supreme Court, was welcomed. The event coincided with a networking event honoring Justice Goldberg, and several accomplished Bay View alumnae attorneys joined the talk. Justice Goldberg has strongly supported the school and its graduates for over 50 years. She has served on Bay View’s Board of Trustees and was named the Outstanding Alumna of the Year in 2011. She has participated in countless mentoring programs and presentations for the school over the years, and she shared many wise words and amusing anecdotes with the girls.

This year’s series ended with a talk with Bay View President Sister Marybeth Beretta. She spoke of her devotion to Mercy education and her decision to become a Mercy Sister. She also gave the girls a glimpse into her days as a young gymnast. All of this year’s speakers are strong examples of the variety of talents and life experiences that make for a successful woman. Our students were given plenty to think about as they contemplate their places in the world.

In appreciation for all she does for Bay View students, Barbara Papitto was honored with a colorful bouquet at the close of her Tea Talk. Vandell Andrade ‘12 shared a cup of tea with the hosts Semiha S. and Satanvi K. before she shared her engaging story.

Having Sister Marybeth as the speaker at the last Tea Talk of the school year was a treat. New host Danielle A. was introduced, stepping in as many of the 2022 - 23 hosts will be graduating.

Striving for Academic Excellence

An exciting new Scholars Program comes to Bay View

An exciting new program named the Public Health and Life Science (PHLS) Scholars Program is being launched in the fall of 2023. The program will offer qualified Bay View students the opportunity to immerse themselves in interdisciplinary coursework and apply their learning in real-world situations. The Scholars Program will prepare students to enter the world with a global perspective and commitment to social justice in the spirit of Sisters of Mercy founder Catherine McAuley. The PHLS focus is the first in a series of Scholars Program offerings that will be launched over the next few years.

“The Scholars Program will be a rigorous course of study that will require deep thinking by students and college-level research,” explains Mary Ann Snider, Vice Principal for Academics and Curriculum. “Students in the PHLS program will be paired with a mentor and are expected to produce a Capstone project by their senior year. This culminating project will be about a global health inequity that they wish to address.” In addition, PHLS students will be required to complete a bioengineering class and be prepared to give a presentation at the iGEM competition, a worldwide program that requires participants to

investigate how synthetic biology can tackle everyday world issues. There is also an externship component to the PHLS program with either an industry or higher education partner.

Students will apply for the Scholars Program in the spring of their freshman year, and selection will be based on a number of criteria, including grades, work habits, evidence of curiosity about the program focus, as well as demonstrated living of Mercy values. Required academic courses for PHLS include those in the areas of science, technology, and math. New offerings, such as a grant-funded computer science class that explores data analyses used in the health sciences, will add to the real-world tool kit that the students will acquire. A web design offering will allow students to learn cutting edge presentation skills.

Athletics Hall of Fame

Jean Mollicone honors inductees and current athletes

A dozen individuals were honored in March with induction into the St. Mary Academy-Bay View Athletics Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame was established to honor those who, by outstanding achievement, service, or significant contributions to athletics, have helped to bring recognition, honor, and distinction to Bay View. Former Director of Athletics, Cindy Neal, served as the master of ceremonies. Earlier in the day, a celebration was held with students, to honor the athletes and the State Champion hockey ‘21-’22, tennis, and volleyball teams ‘22-’23.

Inductee Jean Mollicone ’64 served as the keynote speaker. Jean’s participation in athletics was as a drum majorette, one of three sports (basketball and

basketball cheerleading being the other two) that Bay View offered at the time. While today we might lament that lack of choice for a woman athlete, it is clear that in her time at Bay View and for the rest of her life thus far, Jean Mollicone is all about making the most out of any situation.

Jean was a leader during her Bay View days, serving as a class officer all four years and being involved in many clubs and activities. She was a member of the Rhode Island and Diocesan Honor Societies, and was given the opportunity, along with a few classmates, to advance her math skills through an independent study with Sister Mary Terrence. Her parents supported her choice to attend Bay View even

though she had been offered a full scholarship to another Catholic high school. “I knew that attending Bay View would help me broaden my horizons,” she said in her address. “Since 1874, Bay View has been educating and empowering young women. I wanted to be one of them.”

Jean says her guiding principle continues to be, “If they can do that, I can do that.” While a student at Newton College of the Sacred Heart (which became part of Boston College), she was a cheerleader for the Boston Patriots, now known as the New England Patriots. She continues to be active with the cheerleader alumni organization, NEPCAA, which is dedicated to supporting charitable foundations and attends reunions. The 2017 reunion at Gillette Stadium called for her to learn and perform a routine, which she was thrilled to do.

A lifelong athlete, Jean took up skiing after college and captured nine division titles in the RI Downhill Championships. Skiing continues to be part of her daily routine during her winter stays in New Hampshire. While teaching math at the former St. Xavier Academy, an all-girls Mercy school, she spotted a brochure that pictured a group of teenagers on the summit of the Matterhorn, and so began her climbing career. She submitted the Matterhorn and, in 1990 became the first American woman to summit Mt. Vinson, Antarctica’s highest peak. She has also climbed many of the world’s highest mountains, including Mt. Fuji, Denali, Mt. Olympus, Kilimanjaro, Ben Nevis, Monta Rosa, Mont Blanc, and Mt. Whitney. To celebrate her 70th birthday, she climbed Oregon’s Mt. Hood.

Jean credits her Bay View teachers with encouraging her to push herself to excel, to believe in herself, and not be afraid to try new things. She believes that along with her parents, Bay View provided the foundation for a lifelong pursuit to achieve academic and athletic goals.

“Bay View continues to support and encourage its young women to excel academically and athletically, and girls now have the opportunity to participate in 19 varsity sports!” she said. “I congratulate these athletes who exhibit good sportsmanship and competitive play, earning three State Championships this year.”

Year in Review

Women in Technology Program

Bay View girls have been paving the way for fellow students to become leaders in the fields of engineering, technology, and business through their participation in the Women in Technology program (WIT) since its inception in 2015.

The WIT program is a collaborative and explorative program between Johnson Controls, Inc. (JCI), St. Mary Academy-Bay View, and five other Rhode Island high schools. Students in the program meet two days a month, during the school week, from September to April, and participate as small team members to investigate and solve a JCI-defined business/engineering problem. Under the direction of JCI engineers and management, the student learns about teamwork, problem-solving, and technology in a business environment.

This year’s participants were dedicated sophomores Ava Sousa, Mara Machado, and Sophia D’Orsi. The girls completed the program in March and formally presented their work to JCI management, faculty from the participating schools, and parents on March 23.

Cabaret 40: Rubies!

This year marked the 40th anniversary of our annual fundraising and cabaret weekend. Our acclaimed, cabaretstyle performance and weekend of live entertainment, food, and more created a fun and memorable time for the whole community. A special Ruby Jubilee Celebration & Auction was held on Friday night, four Cabaret 40: Rubies performances were held over three days, and young guests were treated to a meet and greet with fairies and mermaids at the Sunday Matinee.

Bay View’s Women in Technology Program participants Mara M., Ava S., and Sophia D. are shown with David Innis, Bay View faculty advisor and Physics teacher, on the evening of their presentations. Thea Martin was one of the many Middle School girls who performed in this year’s Cabaret. Nearly 100 students participated in the show.

Cross Academy Learning

One of the unique benefits that students in Bay View enjoy is the ability to interact with students across all grades, PreK - Grade 12.

Students in Mrs. Blessing’s Grade 3 class recently had their turn while presenting their Human Body Systems projects to the Upper School WISE (Women in Science) Club members. The third graders worked in groups, and each group created presentations on one of the five body systems: circulatory, respiratory, skeleton, digestive, and nervous. Their presentations included detailed and lifesized drawings of the system and unique songs, dances, or handshakes relative to their system. The program ended with a Reader’s Theater on the Skeletal System. It was a great morning celebrating both girls and women in science.

Color Rush

Annual student fundraiser

On a sunny day in November, all Bay View girls participated in a fun Academy-wide Color-Rush fundraiser. It was all smiles as the girls wore white Bay View t-shirts and ran around the athletic fields while volunteers doused them in vibrant-colored powder. The girls raised $124,000 through the event.

It was a colorful day for all students who participated in the Color Rush.

Italian Exchange

After a three-year pause due to the pandemic, the Bay View Italian Cultural Exchange resumed its 16-year relationship with the Liceo Classico e Linguistico Carlo Alberto in Novara, Italy, this year.

On February 23rd, nine Bay View students met their Italian student hosts, whom they hosted in Rhode Island in the fall of 2022. The trip is a true immersion into Italian culture. They appreciate Italian art and architecture, classical, traditional, and modern music, fashion and design, and authentic regional cuisine. They live the true Italian experience with their host families.

On their day trips, the girls explored Vicenza, the city of the architect Andrea Palladio and ventured through the narrow streets and canals of Venice. Another day, they visited the Camporelli small cookies factory in Novara. The owner told the recipe’s history from 1500, created by the city’s nuns, especially for the Pope. Today, the cookies are still made in the original artisan tradition. Bay View students also visited Milano and Torino. Of course, the trip also included the opportunity for Bay View girls to attend classes with their host students, as their guests had attended Bay View in the fall.

It is a special year when high school athletes win a State Championship in one sport. To win four Team State Championships plus two Individual State Championships is a testimony to the determination, spirit, and talent of the athletes and coaches at Bay View, and it is extraordinary! This year, Bengal fans had the opportunity to watch four winning state championship gamesBasketball, Volleyball, Tennis, and Lacrosse . In addition, seniors Francine Miller and Suraily Sam both earned State Titles in their Track events; indoor track, 600 m, and outdoor track, shotput, respectively. There will be several new banners to hang in the Bay View Wellness Center next year.
