A message from the president Dear alumnae, parents, friends and donors, With every page of this magazine, I am captivated by the stories of who we are at Bay View, where we come from and where we are going. In this issue of Bay View Today, you will meet alumnae whose creativity, confidence, and leadership have sparked the launch of Amazon Go, and another whose influence in the music industry has earned her the honor of being named Billboard Magazine’s “Most Powerful Female Executive.” You will meet alumnae whose personal journeys of growth, discovery, and opportunity trace back to their years at Bay View. And you will find faith in the value of a Bay View education that spans generations. Through glimpses of our current students, you will meet young women who are reaching new heights in academics, athletics, and the performing arts – along with the accomplished faculty and innovative tools that are essential to their success. I invite you to experience this magazine as an expression of who we are as a Bay View community – one that is distinctly committed to the shaping of hearts and minds and to the service of God’s people. Catherine McAuley Statue Dedication
“Our name is Mercy; our spirit is Compassion." On Monday, September 24th, the St. Mary Academy - Bay View community came together and celebrated Mercy Day, the anniversary of the opening of the first "House of Mercy" in Dublin, Ireland. Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, devoted her life to the poor, sick, and uneducated, and on this day every year the Academy continues to celebrate her legacy of caring and compassion. This year, Bay View unveiled a brandnew, life-sized bronze statue of Catherine McAuley. The statue, created by Sister Marie Henderson, RSM, was commissioned through donations from alumnae, parents, students, Sisters of Mercy, and friends of the Academy. After a beautiful and touching dedication and blessing ceremony that involved the whole Academy, Sister Marybeth Beretta, President of St. Mary Academy - Bay View,

shared her thoughts on bringing Catherine home to Bay View. "For all who will gaze upon [Catherine] when they arrive at Bay View [...] My hope and my prayer is that you see and grow to love and admire this woman of Mercy, who dedicated her life and compassionate service to others. May she remind each of us of the joy we receive when we embody, radiate, and share the gift of Mercy with others. May we be inspired to keep Catherine's vision and mission alive today." Mercy in Action Bay View Students Lend a Helping Hand to Children in Saint Lucia Last spring, the Mercy Action Club of St. Mary Academy - Bay View, along with the entire school community, raised more than $2,000 and purchased 270 new umbrellas for the children of the La Croix Maingot School in Saint Lucia. Lisa Jarvis, the mother of a Bay View graduate and the founder of Irie Kids, a non-profit organization helping underprivileged children in Saint Lucia, thanked the Academy for its donation saying: “The children at La Croix are ecstatic! Thank you for sending this much-needed gift to the students. The entire community is so grateful to St. Mary Academy - Bay View for helping to keep the children from getting soaked on their way to and from school. This was a real problem that now has been resolved thanks to the caring hearts of your students.”

In the village of Maingot, Saint Lucia, many children live below the poverty line and walk miles to and from school each day on dangerous roads in the pouring rain. Each year, many of those children die after being hit by passing cars. Through this partnership with Ms. Jarvis and her amazing foundation, Bay View was able to support this important cause. Students raised money through private donations, selling Allie’s Donuts and Spirit Week contributions. With help from the entire Bay View community the Mercy Action Club raised more than $2,000 to purchase new umbrellas.

Students in our Lower School proudly stand with their Boxes of Joy that went to needy children this holiday season.
This fall, as part of their service learning project, our Lower School students participated in the Box of Joy program and collected over 29 boxes full of toys and supplies for children in need. In addition, they also raised $1,064 to go toward the Cross Catholic Outreach. We were truly excited to spread Mercy and bring cheer this holiday season to needy children living in other countries.

Kicking It Up For Our Girls Gala Thanks to the support of the Bay View community, our fifth annual fall gala, Kicking It Up For Our Girls, was a major success! Our 20’s-themed event featured casino games, live and silent auction items, music, food, and a special guest performance by the Bay View Players. All proceeds from the event will benefit the girls and young women of St. Mary Academy Bay View.
Women in Science and Engineering Conference Our sixth annual Women in Science and Engineering Conference was a major hit with more than 70 girls registering. On Saturday, November 3, 2018, students in grades five through eight rotated through exciting workshops related to the fields of science, technology, engineering, medicine and mathematics (STEM). This is the sixth year that Bay View has hosted this important conference with the aim to encourage girls' interests in STEM careers. Thank you to all of our alumnae and Bay View parents who participated. WISE is not possible without you!

Virtual Reality Meets Virtual Anatomy: St. Mary Academy - Bay View Advances STEM Curriculum with Acquisition of Groundbreaking Anatomy Visualization System
St. Mary Academy - Bay View, a guiding light in all-girls education since 1874, continues to emerge as a leader in STEM-focused courses and programs (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) with its acquisition of the Anatomage Table, the world’s first state-of-the-art virtual anatomy dissection table. “We are elated to bring such meaningfully advanced and engaging technology to Bay View,” said Colleen Gribbin, Principal of St. Mary Academy - Bay View’s Upper and Middle Schools. “We will be able to transform the education of our students by inviting them to truly experience the intricacies of course content in ways that simply aren’t achievable through conventional learning tools such as textbooks and online resources.” Providing the hands-on functionality of a tablet, this digital teaching device spans more than six feet and offers a captivatingly interactive and life-size experience of anatomy and physiology that is unmatched. The Anatomage software offers hundreds of clinical case studies, exposing students to 3D images of both human and animal systems that directly support the curriculum of Bay View’s advanced biology courses.
“Our responsibility as educators is to facilitate the learning of our students – to not only ensure that we are providing them with the tools and skills necessary for present and future success, but also to stretch the scope of their imagination and personal potential. Obtaining the Anatomage Table is a significant step in our ongoing efforts to enhance the student experience in every possible way,” said Academy President, Sister Marybeth Beretta.

The purchase of the Anatomage Table was made possible by a grant awarded to St. Mary Academy - Bay View by the Champlin Foundation, as well as through contributions from the school community and other generous donors.
“With the Anatomage virtual dissection table, our students will be able to visualize and understand anatomical structures and interrelated concepts in as lifelike a manner as possible,” said Dr. Janell Johnson, St. Mary Academy - Bay View Science Department Co-Chair. “This is a privilege usually reserved for medical and graduate students, as well as science industry leaders.” When the machine arrives in February 2019, St. Mary Academy - Bay View will become the first elementary/secondary school in Rhode Island to acquire the Anatomage Table. The first students to utilize the table will be those enrolled in the Upper School (Grades 9-12) Human Anatomy and Physiology, Advanced Placement Biology, and Forensic Science courses, with the ultimate goal of making the technology available throughout the entire academy.

innovation & Bay View Alumnae Leading the Way with Amazon Go Launch Gianna Puerini ’91 and Kerri Catallozzi ’02 graduated from St. Mary Academy Bay View a decade apart, but similar interests and fate brought them together in Seattle, Washington for the launch of Amazon Go.
Q Tell us about your current position and what you do. Gianna: I am the business and product leader for Amazon Go, a new kind of store where customers “just walk out” with delicious breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks - no lines, no checkout. In this role, I lead an amazing team of people who create and manage our assortment, the supply chain, our prepared food offering, our team of store associates, marketing and the design and construction of our stores. Kerri: I’m the public relations lead for Amazon Go. At a high level, I work closely with the Amazon Go business and technology teams to help them put their best foot forward publicly and in press coverage. As part of this, I also work with reporters at a range of publications to help them understand and cover Amazon Go positively, whether that’s in a print newspaper piece, a broadcast segment, an online article or beyond.
Q What do you find most exciting about working at Amazon Go? Gianna: There are not many companies that provide the room for innovation that Amazon does – especially when success is not guaranteed. Building technology and a customer experience that enabled customers to “Just Walk Out” was hard – it took us four years! We did not know at the outset if we’d succeed, but knowing that failure is a possibility is a critical part of the invention process – a lot of ideas can end up in the trash can, and you have to be OK with that. It can be a little daunting, but it’s also incredibly exciting and empowering. Kerri: There is never a dull moment! As a company that fosters creativity and innovation, Amazon is naturally a place that attracts really smart people who want to work on incredible things, and I feel lucky to get to learn from the best every day.
Q How did your education at Bay View prepare you for your job? Gianna: With the benefit of hindsight, I place a very high value on my all-female education. Especially now being in a male-dominated field, I can see how the Bay View environment helped me prepare for this. There are so many pressures in high school, and being in an all-female environment removed some of those in a way that helped me develop the confidence and focus I believe have served me well. Kerri: I frequently think about the impact that an all-female education had on my life – both career and personal. I don’t hesitate to speak my mind when I feel strongly about something and that’s definitely a confidence I built with the support of my

Collaboration Bay View education and community. That community also taught me the importance of having good female friends and support. I went to Bay View from kindergarten through Grade 12, and I met some amazing women along the way who remain lifelong friends.
Q What is your reaction when you meet/see other successful Bay View alumnae, especially ones who work at Amazon Go? Gianna: About a year ago, I found out that my amazing public relations partner (Kerri Catallozzi) is also a Bay View alum! She is an amazing and talented woman, and it was really a joy to find out we had this shared bit of history. Thanks to the advent of social media, I can now also see what many of my classmates are up to. They are incredible – artists, business people, moms, teachers – the list goes on. It is a joy to see how their lives have developed, and I love how easy it is to communicate as if no time has passed (even though it’s been almost 30 years). Success can be defined on so many measures, and it’s wonderful to see the many ways they have all succeeded. Kerri: There’s an instant camaraderie. Gianna and I actually discovered we were both Bay View gals the day that we announced that Amazon Go was opening to the public. We had discussed both being from Rhode Island, which was unique enough being on the other side of the country. In a conversation that day, she mentioned in passing that she went to an all-female school and my ears instantly perked up. We figured out that we both had gone to Bay View and had a good laugh. In true Rhode Island style, our families also know one another! She’s an incredible leader, role model and all-around fantastic person and I feel very fortunate to work with her and her team.

Q What advice would you give to a young girl aspiring to be like you? Gianna: Be open to the surprises and opportunities life presents you – you never know which ones end up getting you to a new and rewarding place! Also, don’t sit on the sidelines. Take up the space that is rightfully yours – heck, spread out a little! If you are in a meeting and interrupted, stop and tell that person not to interrupt you. Even if you are the only woman in the room, you have as much right as anyone to be there (and possibly more) – don’t forget that. Kerri: Don’t be afraid to make yourself uncomfortable. Over the years, I’ve realized that I learn and grow so much faster when I’m new at something (which I personally find uncomfortable) and would have missed out on a lot of opportunities if I hadn’t taken some leaps of faith that the discomfort would turn into growth.

Spotlight on Crew Rowing Program Enjoys Another Amazing Season This fall, the rowing team competed in the 54th Head of the Charles, the largest two-day rowing event in the world and the most prestigious American regatta. In addition, they took home two medals from the New England Junior & High School Regional Championship Regatta (third in both the freshman category and in the 2nd varsity eight). The senior crew boat also took home 1st place in the Konquer the Kronk Regatta. Congratulations on an amazing season. We look forward to the spring!
Bengals Support Victoria Sousa 5K Run/Walk This October, student-athletes from our field hockey, soccer, and volleyball teams supported the Victoria Sousa 5k Run/Walk. The annual event, held at Colt State Park in Bristol honors Victoria Sousa, a prospective Bay View student, who passed away at the age of twelve during the H1N1

epidemic in 2009. Created by her family members Louis (father), Cathy ’80 (mother), Marguerite ’10 and Emily ’13 (sisters), the Victoria Sousa Foundation is a scholarship fund for young women in need. To date, nine Bay View girls have received scholarships enabling them to attend Bay View. The foundation also works with the Rhode Island Department of Health to sponsor free flu clinics at schools across the state. This fall, 179 Bay View students received flu vaccinations thanks to the Victoria Sousa Foundation.

From Annie to Phantom, Hello Dolly to The Sound of Music, Manhattan at the Bay’s Cabaret has become a Bay View staple that reinvents itself year after year. “God has been so good to me - not many people get to go to work every day and work at what they love with people they love. For this, I am most grateful,” said Kavanagh. Bay View Live! Cabaret 35 will forever hold a special place in Kavanagh’s heart. Prior to the final performance of the weekend, she was treated to a surprise performance of her own as a flash mob of Bay View Player alumnae stood up in a sold-out auditorium belting out a special rendition of the Bay View classic “Let the River Run.” “It was fabulous,” Kavanagh exclaimed. “Just viewing a sea of former students spanning thirty-five years, singing and celebrating was very emotional for me. It always puts a smile on my
face to gather with alumnae and rekindle those magical performing moments!” “I felt a rush of emotion and nostalgia,” added Bay View Players alumna Nancy Peters ’04. “Bay View holds so many positive memories and they all seemed to rush back as we stood together to sing for Mrs. K and Miss Gualtieri. There is a powerful Bay View sisterhood that you hold deep in your heart and never ever forget. I'm honored to be part of that.” But the flash mob was just icing on the cake of a wonderful 35th Anniversary Celebration. After the final show of the weekend, the Bay View community gathered together for an after-party inside the Athletics Wellness Center. There was cake, music, dancing – and even musical performances by Bay View Player alumnae that included ...

BAY VIEW STUDENT CHOSEN AS NATIONAL HEART OF THE ARTS AWARD WINNER Cecelia Egan, a sophomore at Bay View, has been named the 2018 National Heart of the Arts Award winner for her dedication to performing arts. Born with Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA), a degenerative neuromuscular condition that limits her mobility from the neck down, Cecelia is a mainstay on the Bay View stage and was honored with the National Heart of the Arts Award by the National Federation of State High School Associations at their summer conference in Chicago this past June.
OFF TO NEVERLAND! St. Mary Academy - Bay View presented Broadway’s Peter Pan as the Academy’s fall theatrical production this year. With a cast and crew of 140 student performers in Grades 6-12, the show drew more than 1,300 audience members on November 2nd and 3rd.

Last May, over 100 alumnae returned to Bay View to celebrate Alumnae Weekend 2018. Special events included an Alumnae Mixer, Alumnae Liturgy, Senior Pinning Ceremony, and Alumnae Brunch. During the brunch, Doneen Lombardi ’88, the former executive vice president/head of marketing for Columbia Records, was honored as the 2018 Alumna of the Year. In addition to the the awarding of the Alumna of the Year award, the classes of 1968, 1998, and 2008 celebrated their 50th, 20th, and 10-year reunions.

Doneen Lombardi, a 1988 graduate of St. Mary Academy - Bay View, is a music industry executive and most recently the executive vice president/head of marketing for Columbia Records. With more than 25 years of music industry experience, Doneen has worked with many famous performing artists including Adele, Harry Styles, and Rachel Platten. In addition, she has been named one of Billboard Magazine’s Most Powerful Female Executives in the Music Industry for 2016 and 2017.

As a 1984 graduate of Bay View, I look back and recall many of the fondest memories of my teenage years. My Bay View experience began in the seventh grade – a young girl so afraid to take that step into a new school not knowing a soul. Once I realized that so many of us we were all in the same situation on day one, it all came together, and making friends, many of whom I am still in touch with today, became so much easier. During my time at Bay View, I was able to uncover so much more about myself, my own capabilities, and the opportunities that were ahead of me – so much more than I could have ever imagined on that very first day. As I came to internalize the value of Catholic school, I also realized that the exceptional education and life lessons that I received at Bay View had not only helped me to prepare for college and career, but helped me to build my self-confidence and shape me into the person that I am today. As our daughter Jane’s first teachers, my husband Glenn and I wanted to be sure that she received her education in a nurturing, loving environment, one of Mercy, alongside other students whose families felt the same and valued the extraordinary education provided in the single-sex environment that is Bay View. Jane was only three when we attended Open House at Bay View, and seeing that the foundation of the Mercy education that I had received was alive and thriving at Bay View helped to make our decision to enroll her in Pre-K, before we left the parking lot that afternoon, that much easier. I must give credit also to the 5th grader, Lee-Anne, who provided us with a tour of the school and

helped us beyond all expectation. She was confident, poised, and well-spoken–everything I had expected and more.
We are so appreciative that the faculty and staff are united in teaching from a moral compass, which includes prayer, respect for the Church and its teachings, respect for one another, and the ultimate respect for God, that, as parents, we find it invaluable in providing a consistent message both at home and at school. 1986 Patricia Coyne-Fague ’86 was appointed Director of the RI Department of Corrections by Governor Gina Raimondo in December 2018; making her the first female corrections director in RI history. Coyne-Fague graduated cum laude from RI College in 1990 with a BA in Political Science. She went on to receive her law degree from the New England School of Law in 1993. She has two children and will be celebrating her 30th wedding anniversary in June 2019.
2004 Caitlin LeClair Moloney ’04 was recently married in a ceremony at St. Mary’s Church in Cranston, RI on October 7th. The couple honeymooned in Italy and currently reside in Cranston.
2000 Courtney Teoli Murray ’00 was married on December 9th, 2017. The couple reside in Westerly, RI. Courtney has a Doctoral Degree in Physical Therapy and has recently taken on the role of Physical Therapy Manager at the Rhode Island Limb Company, her family’s prosthetic and orthotic practice.

2005 Morgan Divona Maher ’05 has been living and working as a private English teacher in Florence, Italy with her husband for the past five years. She and her husband recently welcomed a baby girl this past September.
1990 Alison Croke ’90 recently started a new position as the President and CEO of Wood River Health Services in Hopkinton, RI. Previously, she was the Vice President of Medicaid-Medicare Integration at Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island.

The campaign has gained momentum and has led to a broader discussion of racism, tolerance, and citizenship in the neighboring towns of Mansfield and Foxboro where she lives.

Dana DeIngenis ’03 graduated from Stonehill College in 2007. There, she received All-American honors in cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field. Overall, she was a seven-time NCAA Championship participant posting a 49th place finish at the 2006 NCAA Cross Country Championships. She also ran the indoor mile (9th/4:55.80) at the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championships.
the New Hampshire Teacher of the Year for Elementary Physical Education by the New Hampshire Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Katie teaches physical education at Main Street School in Exeter, NH and has her Master’s Degree in Education from the University of New Hampshire (obtained in 2009 and 2010, respectively). Katie currently lives in Stratham, NH with her husband, and dog, Arya.

Raquel excelled in both basketball and lacrosse for the Wildcats and recently graduated from Johnson & Wales University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice; she is currently earning her Master’s Degree at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.
