NaiTagansett Bay is a long arm of the Atlantic Ocean reaching up twenty-eight miles into Rhode Island, nearly dividing its 1,214 square miles. Its water, splash­ ing and striking against 360 miles of inland coast, is Rhode Island’s avenue of seaborne commerce and recreation.

The Bay has seen a great deal of history. Norsemen might have sailed here, and Verrazano in 1524 seems to have explored the region and named it after the Isle of Rhodes. In 1614 Adriaen Block preceded other Dutch­ men, giving his name to one of the Bay’s thirty-six islands.

Still bristling with Boston’s tlireats, Roger Williams often paddled through its waters.

Sloops appeared in the seven­ teenth century, and packets and steamers glided happily into modern times.

The Bay is worth consid­ ering.

in full view Bay View is the name of a Catholic academy for girls, whose official title is Saint Mary’s Academy. Its faculty, numbering over fifty, educates thirteen hundred students from kindergarten to grade twelve. Its three buildings stand proudly on their forty-eight acre campus, withdrawn a bit from the busy traffic of East Providence’s Pawtucket Avenue.

The Bay has seen a great deal of history. In 1874 the Sisters of Mercy opened the Howard mansion on Pawtucket Avenue as a ' boarding school for girls. Its first official title was Saint Mary’s Seminary for Young Ladies, but Bayview-on-the-Narragansett be­ came its popular name since so few houses were around to obstruct the view. The first years under the principal Sister Mary Juliana Pur­ cell were successful ones. Soon two other buildings appeared. It was the Golden Age of Steamers and Bay View was already prospering full steam ahead. In 1889 Mother Mary Bernard Read, a marvelat administration, began her twenty-one years of direction that established the school, despite a fire in 1906. The twentieth century brought two World Wars and a depression. The tragic fire of 1948 destroyed the school completely, but led to the school buildings as they now stand. Days were difficult but devoted faculty, alumnae and generous clergy have seen the Bay endure superbly into modern times.

The Bay is worth considering.

At the Bay, day after day, waves of students plunge energetically into their class­ rooms and study halls and leave with new experiences and challenging ideas prepared for the sea of life. The Bay is not merely a school, rather it is a community. Prompted by a three-year evaluation program estab­ lished by the Diocese of Providence, the Class of 1967 has attempted to present this community in “A View of the Bay”.

When one views the Bay one must recog­ nize the abilitv of its administration, the Sisters of Mercy, especially Sister Mary Andre and her assistants. Strong teachers, lay and religious, trained in colleges and universities, study, prepare and teach in various fields of education. One perceives the Senior Class of one hundred and seventytwo waiting for their college acceptances and receix'ing their long-anticipated diplomas.

Through the reflection of a blue stone en­ cased in gold, Juniors assume their new and proud title of upperclassmen. As Sophomores become more inx olved in the life of the Bay, they are seen through sharing, service and study. Bewildered Freshmen, new sisters of the Bay, show themselves in their search for lo\'e, security and discipline — the bonds of the Bav. The curriculum of humanities and sciences presents the viewer with the scho­ lastic picture. Extra-curricular activities pre­ sent the student with an opportunity to grow and to contribute. One must view this aspect in order to perceive the Bay’s total complexities.

The student is enriched by four years of new experiences and challenging ideas through an integrated academic, spiritual and social program. The new view is the complete person, developed through newly gained knowledge, extended capacities and deepened capabilities. By viewing, knowing and understanding the Bay, one realizes that the Bay is truly worth considering.

up with people,” the modernist chants. To have heard a song is one thing. To have seen and known a teacher who personifies this keen, people-orientated understanding is quite another matter. The seniors who have known Mother Mary Kieran believe her to be such a person.

For fifteen years Sister was a faculty member of Bay View, teaching math, and at various times directing dra­ matics or sodality. An appointment to the Provincial Council of the Sisters of Mercy came in 1964. The summer of 1966 brought still another change: Sister became Mother Provincial of the Sisters of Mercy — a position which places her in charge of nearly one thousand people.

Bay View has known her as an understanding, resource­ ful teacher; it has been warmed by her gracious manner, and drawn to her prayerful humility. Knowing her kind service to Bay View, both past and present, the graduating class dedicates, with gratitude, the 1967 McAuleyan to Mother Mary Kieran.

"f Since Saint Mary’s Academy, Bay View is in the diocese of Providence, the students come under the direct juris­ diction of His Excellency, the Most Reverend Russell J. McVinney and His Excellency, the most Reverend Bernard M. Kelly. There is, however, a stronger bond than mere locale which strengthens this relationship. Just as our faculty carries the torch of education, so too, our bishops carry their torches through the lives of each and every Bay View girl. By their example students see the way to become the mature Catholics needed in the world today. By looking at these apostles we see the dedication, leadership and love required to be a true follower of Christ on earth. With their guidance Bay View’s chaplain, the Reverend Joseph Hughes, assists each girl to find Christ in her life. It is the instruction of these dedicated servants of Our Lord that Saint Mary’s gives of itself as each of its girls offers her thoughts, prayers and actions to God the Father. By the offering of First Friday Mass the students of our Academv unite under new liturgy to give their praises as children of God. This offering, coupled with such endeavors as voca­ tional assistance and personal encoun­ ters, allows Father Hughes to bring each student a little closer to a true unity with Christ. In this way, Bishop Mc­ Vinney, Bishop Kelly and Father Hughes instruct the young women who will be the Christian leaders of the next gener­ ation.

administrative outlook Saint Marys Academy, Bay \’iew, is owned and conducted bv the Sisters of Mercv. This religious community has maintained directly the many facets involved — administration, selection of faculty, determination of policies and goals, and maintenance.

Sister Mary• Nathaniel assists Mother Mar\« ’ Kieran at the top of the administrative structure.

These higher superiors appoint the faculty mem­ bers from among their subjects, select officials at the school, and determine essential, longrange policies of the school. Sister Mary Cath­ erine is the religious superior of Saint Mary’s Convent, bearing also the responsibility for over fifty resident students. Sister Marv Andre, for the second year, directly controls the life of the school, assisted by Sister Mary Leander.

Dedication and efficiency characterize the en­ deavors of Sister Marv Rembert. Sister’s duties concern the financial life of the school.

The Students of Bay Mew 172 seniors, 165 juniors, 187 sophomores, and 196 freshmen, constitute a large group, who depend on these leaders.

novak series revises

Sister Mary Sylvia

Religion plays an important role in one*s stay at the Bay. As a Freshman and Sophomore one is acquainted with the basic truths of religion and salvation history. The emphasis is placed on the liturgy <and practical applications of faith during Junior and Senior years.

The new Novak series incorporates visits to other churches, inter­ faith dialogues and classroom discussions into the methods of teaching religion. Talks on marriage and other religions by notable speakers help to promote the necessary attitudes of true Christianity. Throughout the four years at the Bay, these lectures, projects and student trips help to instill in our lives the meaning of Christian womanhood. Annual retreat provides an opportunity for the students to reflect on ones life as a Christian.

Religion at the Bay aims not only at the knowledge of Christian ideas and ideals but also at love and service to Christ and one’s fellow man.

Sister Mary Jane Frances

On special occasions their prayers are offered as a group. Here some seniors reflect on private thoughts during a busy school day. Other visits include presentation of flowers on Mercy Day, rosaries for peace and group meditation.

With the introduction to the Novak series, a new interest and awareness has been infiltrated into religion classes. In this junior religion class conducted by Sister Miriam Joseph more participation is evident in the many open discussions which have instilled a new religion into the minds and hearts of each girl.

Thirty-four seniors discuss the elements of the modern short story as a literary genre in an early morning English literature class.

Capably leading them, Sister Mary Sharon gives the discussion the value of her experience and extensive knowledge of world literature.

Besides completing regular classroom assignments, students at Bay are given many long range assignments which require long and tedious hours spent at the library on research. Eileen Kenney, a senior, is hard at work finishing up one of those assignments.

Susan Curtin wonders in what shape her notebook will be in after Sister Francella checks her homework. Her classmates Anne Frances, Betty Ann Corrente, and Jeanne Gavula, work diligently at defining various types of literature.

Throughout each of the four years each student pursues the study of her “mother tongue” — English. The English curriculum is made up of three sections: grammar, composition, and literature. The Literature program includes not only class readings, but outside selections, and a summer reading list. Freshmen and sophomores concentrate on grammar, composition, and literary types. Juniors and seniors take a survey of American and English Literature, along with creative writing. Studies in English this year were not limited to classroom work. Participating in Project Discovery, students viewed Saint Joan, Ah, Wilder­ ness, Three Sisters, andtMidsunimer Night's Dream. Nor could one forget Mary Louise Hickey’s visit with the monologue Diary of Anne Frank.

The 1966-67 school year initiated, for the first time, a three year course in German. Following the ALM program, first-year students began their language study, which incorporates oral-aural methods, and written work. Third and fourth year students of French had the opportunity this year to join the Alliance Francaise. Established to further the study of French for interested students, weekly meetings after school were attended by fluent upperclassmen. Courses in Latin and Spanish continued as in the past. Skits, group discussions, literary and historical studies augmented lectures. Students may elect any language, and, with the widened curriculum, many have studied several languages.

Bay View’s five science courses were an active catalyst in the edu­ cational reaction this year. Scientifically-minded seniors pursued ad­ vanced-placement chemistry. Three hours of lab, together with lectures, were a basic requirement for this class. Lab instructors from Salve Regina College provided an added enrichment. Physical science begins the science program. Biology for sophomores, modern in every way, is the new B.S.C.S. Blue Version program. A ninety minute lab is required with the lectures. Many challenging and rewarding courses are offered to Bay View students by the math department under the guidance of Sister Mary Terence, R.S.M. Four years of math are required at the academy. The freshmen apply themselves to Modern Algebra while Sophomores are busily engaged in the structure and concepts of Modern Geometry, All Juniors are required to study Modern Algebra II and Trigonometry.

A new course for Seniors has been introduced this vear Modern Introductory Analysis, which deals with the principles of Boolean Algebra, matrices, set theory, analytic-trigonometry and geometry.

These courses have as their aim a better understanding of the various fields of mathematics and of their great importance in the advanced technological and scientific fields. The student is prepared to meet the demands of the rapidly progressing world of today.

Social Studies holds the mysteries of man and the world. To understand these mysteries and to better our futures are the goals of the history department at Bay View. These goals are achieved through the oflFered courses in World History, American History and Problems in American Democracy.

Modern visual aids such as maps and charts and supplementary assignments of reading and research are incorporated into the courses.

Such classes seek to develop a fuller meaning of history, from past to present.

As most Bay View students continue on to a higher form of edu­ cation, many need that special skill of typing. Beginning with sophomore year, a typing course is made available to anyone who elects it. Because of the great demand, Sister Marie Geraldyn, the instructor, condensed the course this year to the duration of one semester per pupil. This year also saw the addition of new equipment and cabinets to facilitate business procedures.

Community Christian action is the spirit which enables the Bay X’iew Sodality to engage in various activities. Under the guidance of Sister Mary Marlene and Sister Miriam Joseph, the club is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors. Sodality sponsors the tutorial program at Temple Street School, a visiting program at the W arwick Medical Center as well as collections of clothing and 1 hanksgixing baskets. Aside from major projects, Sodality prox'ides an op­ portunity to fulfill one’s Christian commitment.

The students of Bay View look to the Student Council for leadership. Their motto, Shalom, peace, set the tone for the many activities directed by the Council. With Sister Rose Mary as its adviser, the Council conducted the Freshmen Welcome, Big and Little Sister programs, pep rallies, Crystal Ball, and College Day. Assuming many forms, and working in many guises, this dedicated group at all times also acted as official mediators between students and administration. These many* hours of dedicated work were under the presidency of Sue Spar­ ling, whose 1966 campaign slogan, “Put a tiger in your school,” nevertheless achieved a year of Shalom.

Those who lead . . . On Monday nights, the entire Council meets with the moderator and officers to discuss projects and programs for the student body. Also, at these meetings, members try to help solve the problems of the students.

Membership in the Council is determined by election.

Each homeroom selects one representative, and she rep­ resents her room, together with tlie Class President, at meetings. Sue Sparling and Maureen Hackett head the group, which is further di­ vided into seven committees.

comical and avant-garde productions hold bayview audiences Dedicated to perfection, the Bay View Drama Club — The Bay View Players — spent many hours practicin’^ for their two major productions. Our Hearts Were Toung and Gay, starring Marilyn Cocozza and Maryanne Mur­ phy, had its audiences laughing continuously through the two-night run. The dramatization of Shubert Alley, with Sheila Heaslip, Sue Scanlan, and Maryanne Murphy, put this year’s audience in the same frame of mind. Not Far From the Giaconda Tree, festival play for 1966, presented a contrast. With a cast of seven, somber cos­ tumes and sets, it unfolded its provocative theme — seeing truth and reality. Janet Gross and Marthrose Laffev» were featured in the 1967 entrv* for the Festival.

The Drapes Come. Those not selected for public per­ formances nonetheless played invaluable roles in working with costumes, sets, make-up, sound, and lighting effects. Sister Mary Laurita is director for all presentations.

The former Debate Club added a speech section, changing its name to “Forensic.” Debaters this year took part in the Georgetown University Tournament and the Daitmouth College Invitational Tournament. Maureen Hackett, Margaret Lewds, and Claudia Champoux participated in the Georgetow'n summer workshop; Chris Rider attended the Ohio State summer workshop. As members of the Rhode Island section of N.C.F.L., members debated the topic; Resolved — that the foreign aid program to the United States should be limited to non-inilitarv assistance.

bay’s activities The B<7y Viewer, the school newspaper and the ^icAuleyan, the yearbook, arc the two phases of the Journalism Club. Acting as moderator of the newspaper, Sister Mary Sharon and her staff have initiated several changes into the paper, Xew columns as well as interviews and cartoons have made the Bay Viewer more interesting. The yearbook, under the direction of Sister Marie Walter, is also undergoing changes. The larger size book holds more pictures of activities and undergraduates. Paper, pen, ink, and photographs are what these publications are made of, but most of all it is the students who utilize these tools that make the yearbook and the newspaper what they are.

Bay View, this year, enjoyed two dances, in addition to the proms. During the last week of December, holiday festivi­ ties reached a climax with the Crystal Ball. For the first time, a theme (“Christmas Belles and Holiday Beaux”) provided a unifying motif for this special evening of dancing to the FcnZflineV music, A buffet helped to make the evening at the Grist Mill a beautiful winter formal.

February saw Bay View belles bringing their Dads to the Father-Daughter Dance. This semi-formal evening of dancing to Johnny Azevedo’.s band has its own distinctive tone of care­ free gaiety. Everything about the night, from dancing to refresh­ ments to posing for pictures, joined to make the night a time of fun.

Forty-three upperclassmen became members of the senior Glee Club, while ninth-graders sang as the training group.

On December 14, chosen members were privileged to appear in the Festival in the Cathedral under the direction of C. Alexander Peloquin. At Christmastime, both senior and freshman groups enter­ tained with traditional and new carols.

The Spring Program marked this year’s musical climax. The training of Sister Marie Lorraine and the accompaniment of Mary Ellen Lange helped make the year a musical one of joy.

new coach incites team to victory The 1966-67 season was an energetic one for Bay View’s varsity basketball team. With Mr. Urciuoli as coach and Pat Mullan as team manager, the twelvemember team opened its fourteen-game season in De­ cember and brought it to a successful close in March.

Each Tuesday and Thursday this year the hoopsters met and went through their paces at so-necessary practice sessions.

MaryLou Mancini headed the cheerleaders in their spirited activities. At each game the eleven girls, sport­ ing their new plaid-skirt-and-yellow-blouse outfits, cheered the team and invigorated the spectators. Twelve girls also volunteered to cheer for the Bishop Hendricken High football, basketball, and track events.

Bay View’s only athletic endeavor is under the direction of Sister Mary Arlene.

For the first time this year, Mr. Albert Urciuoli coached the school team. Mary Lou Butterfield and Ann Wernig were voted co-captains. Both coach, captains, manager, moderator, and team spent long hours making this year’s team one of the best.

The future Teachers Club, by its very nature, is a forward-looking organization. It has for its aim the counseling and guiding of the juniors and seniors who exhibit an avid interest in the teaching profession. This year the club provided a forum for vocational discussion, so essential to its seventy-five members. Programs were built around underprivileged children and the men­ tally retarded at public centers. The regular project was teaching at St. Benedict’s Hearth in East Providence. Back home at Bay View, some acted as assistants to teachers in both elementary and high school classes. Acting as a guidance-service organization, the Future Teachers Club offers invaluable experience and a chance to discover what teaching young minds is actuallv like.

artistic students experiment Tuesday afternoons saw an exodus to St. Josephs Hall, where the Art Club met to work artistically. Sister Mary Corina, adviser and moderator, introduced better techniques in com­ position, and the girls soon realized also the possibilities of color and textures. Projects in traditional water colors, pencil, charcoal and tempera occasionally alternated with the more exotic acrylics and plastic paints. Outside of weekly meetings, the twenty-five talented mem­ bers this year travelled to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and Rhode Island School of Design.

seven red cross units serve community Forty-five faithful members of Bay Views Red Cross Unit helped to make Veterans Hos­ pital, Newport Naval Hospital, Adult Correc­ tional Institute, and Bradley Home brighter places in the community. Linda Da Costa, Ruth Hodge and Cynthia Walker acted as senior advisers for the manifold activities. The seven units represented a wide range of services: Favors, Hostess, Entertainment, Book, Inter­ national Art, Bradley Home and Decoration.

Unit leaders Margaret Hollenbeck, Kathryn McNamee, Linda Da Costa, Jane Ferreira, Tara Cox and Albertina Lacerda worked with moder­ ator Sister Marie Sarah to make this a year of generous service.

seniors plan for medical careers e

Seniors anticipating various professions in the world of medicine joined under Sister Marie Sarah in various projects and activities. This year, members visited the hospitals of Rhode Island, Salve Regina College, and the Mutual Insurance Rehabilitation Center. Service activities involved hospital work, making bandages, and collecting medicines for missions. It was a vear of both service and instruction.

As a major project, active members prepared cancer bandages this year for hospitals throughout the state.

Futures in the medical professions, ranging from nurse to biochemist, provided many a discussion for members. Pictured are some of the more active mem­ bers; Mary Ellen Lange, Gail Pandozzi, Joyce Hardi­ man, Deborah Howrie, and Marianne Kopaczynski. k

W’ith sadness and song and tears of joy, com­ mencement week arrives. The Mother and Daughter Communion Breakfast held after a Mass offered in the convent chapel for the future success of the seniors opens commencement acti\’ities. Seniors bid farewell to fellow classmates and undergraduates recalling the last four years of attainment of ideas and ideals on Class Dav. Graduates receive awards in recognition of their accomplishments in the fields of leadership, scholarship and service on Parents Night. Parents, friends and relatives stand proudly as white caps and gowns Hash down the aisles of the Bay. On that long-anticipated Graduation Day, diplomas are awarded from the hands of the Bishop.

Through tearful and smiling eyes they are received.

Wearing the laurels of high school graduation, one departs with a thrust toward the future for Com­ mencement i.s not an end but a beginning.
