SISTER MARY EDWARD, R.S.M., M.A., is principal of both the high and grammar schools here.

The Bells of Saint Mary's ring out this year in grateful acknowledgement of twenty-five years of sterling silver service rendered to Bay View by our Sister Mary Edward, R.S.M. Imbued with an undying love for Bay View as a student, Sister returned to her Alma Mater as a Religious Sister of Mercy to give her all for her

school and students. Through the years as teacher, principal, and friend, her girls remember her best for the wisdom of her leadership, the depth of her understand­ ing, and the charity of her smile.

In tribute then, to one who has dedi­ cated her life to us, we dedicate the Me Auleyan of 1960.

1 HIS EXCELLENCY, MOST REVEREND RUSSELL J. McVINNEY, D.D., Bishop of Providence, shows a fatherly interest in all Bay View Activities.

Most Reverend Russell J. McVinney, D.D., our beloved Bishop, father and spiritual director of the Catholic people in the diocese of Provi­ dence, has always shown a great interest in the welfare and education of students at Bay View.

The invaluable instructions we have received from the Bishop will always be cherished in our memories.

Under his priceless guidance our high school years have been enriched; under his fatherly care we have discovered a deeper significance in our Catholic education.

We Bay Viewites have often had the privilege of having His Excellency preside at our gradu­ ation exercises. May his wise counsel aid us always in our future endeavors whatever they may be.

Our well-liked chaplain, Reverend Arnold Madden, along with his busy activities as associate editor of the Providence Visitor, finds time to help us with many matters concerning our spiritual welfare.

Father says Mass for us on many occasions, and he is here every First Friday to distribute Holy Communion. In every edition of our school paper Father Madden writes an en­ lightening and guiding message.

We feel very honored to have such a benev­ olent chaplain as Father Arnold Madden, and we are truly grateful for his devotion, hard work, and prayers.

Saint Mary's Academy, Bay View, a boarding and day school for girls, kindergarten through senior high, and a day school for boys in the elemen­ tary grades is conducted by the Re­ ligious Sisters of Mercy.

The school, which is located in River­ side, Rhode Island, offers, in the senior high division, courses in college prep and business, with many extra-cur­ ricula activities open to its 650 high school students.

The administration of the school is in the capable hands of Sister Mary Edward, R.S.M., Sister is also in charge of the Rhode Island Honor Society.

Sisters watch procession of seniors into the auditorium before commencement exercises in June.

Az Under the able leadership of Sister Mary Jeremy, R.S.M., the Sodality of our Lady of Mercy has carried out the work of the lay apostolate by putting concentrated effort into the improvement of conversation in school, as well as in our entire lives. In the past year the sodality did great work to foster a proper spirit for the annual school retreat, and for the Chair of Unity Octave. They also practiced the Corporal Works of Mercy.

Sodality members have certainly set an example for the rest of the student body to follow in the Way of Mary.

Graduation is coming and we are about to leave our classmates and friends, many of whom we shall prob­ ably never see again, while others will be with us always. But we shall have memories of them all in our yearbook, the 19G0 Me AULEYAN. and it is to our excellent and hard work­ ing staff that we owe this treasured edition.

It was a big job on the part of all seniors, who solicited ads and patrons to send our book to press, so we thank all who in any way contributed to making this 1960 yearbook the greatest ever. THE BAY VIEWER is published four

times each year by the senior mem­ bers of the journalism club. The con­ stant query of the students - "When is the paper coming out?" - attests to its popularity. The paper contains a variety of articles on sports, fashions, current school news, religion, inter­ views, and just plain comments. Like any worthwhile and successful project, the paper requires work. Writing, edit­ ing, and planning a school paper take time and effort, yet it is fascinating work, all the staff members agree.

An inquiring mind— the key to suc­ cess; this is true in preparing a news­ paper as well as in school work, or even in life.

We, the staff, are proud of the reputa­ tion our paper has achieved and real­ ize it is due to the sincere efforts of Sister Mary Gratia R.S.M., our advisor.

Bay View's Student Association, al­ though only in its second year oi existence, has taken a giant step closer to its goal—unity. From the red badges down to green ones, and between faculty and students, the council has embedded in our minds the rewards of teamwork. Its "Sister Program" helped this along and gave new life to Bay View.

Student Council has also helped our school's discipline by use of the famous demerit system.

Although Bay View's council has had many bumps and bruises, it always seems to take a step in the right direc­ tion. Month after month new ideas are added, while old ones become memories of our school life.

Our school's student government has certainly worked long and hard to better Bay View and to benefit its students, due in great measure to its moderator, Miss Eileen McSoley.

Throughout the Boy View school year, one con hear the melodious voices of the Stella Matutina Choristers. The Choristers are under the able supervision of Sister Mary Marcella, R.S.M. The club is comprised of juniors and seniors who possess promising ability in the music field. Each Tuesday the girls meet faithfully for practice.

Songsters in the glee club, adorned by their blue and gold robes, are the highlight of many school activities. This year was no exception.

They gave a memorable performance for Mother General's visit in December. Soon after that members busied themselves with re­ hearsals for the annual operetta. Babes in Toyland." Nancy Sullivan, ouiiivan, Senior senior 2, z, was chosen president this year and led the girls successfully in all their undertakings. \I

Accompany Activity period at Bay View finds senior, junior, sophomore, and fresh­ man orchestra and band members hurrying to the music room for practice.

It is said that practice makes perfect, and perfect is the word that describes their excellent performances at various school functions throughout the year.

The orchestra and band function under the direction of Sister Miriam Theresa R.S.M., and Mr. John Corrado, who spend a great deal of time teaching the members to develop the harmony and perfection which we all recognize and appreciate.

At the end of the year, the orchestra plays for graduation. Some of the members leave, but their places are filled by others who zealously continue to make the orchestra and band a source of pride to Bay View.

"Undertow," a one act play, was presented last year by the dramatic club. Two scenes pictured above and on page 102 show dramatic moments when the two leads, Ann Scanlon and Kathy Hodge, make startling an­ nouncements. The play was very well received by a large audience.

The day - Monday The activity Dramatics.

Under the direction of Sister Mary Ludivine R.S.M., the girls learn every­ thing possible about one of Sister's favorite subjects. The result of Sister's untiring work with the cooperation of the budding actresses is the chance for all to try out for parts in the plays.

The operetta, "Babes in Toyland,'' was a perfect example of the hard work of the dramatic club; as was the Rhode Island Dramatic Festival entry, "Whirl­ wind." Mrs. Marie Kane assists Sister Mary Ludivine R.S.M., with all the ventures of the dramatic club.

The intellectual beauty spot at Bay View is our library, supervised by Sister Urban R.S.M, It is an important spot for English research work. A large section for reference pro­ vides information on a multitude of sub­ jects. From various homerooms there are girls who work as assistant librarians, under the title of the Library Club. They catalog cards, shelf books, check cards, and help to keep the library neat. The library is a favorite retreat for recreational reading and also provides for our spiritual reading.

Especially noteworthy is its collection of Hummel figurines, which are kept in an attractive display case. Another feature is music while you work. All find the library one of the most attractive rooms in the school.

Club holds a meeting each month.

World Affairs Forum is a club exclusively for seniors, having as its main function the discussion of current events. Seniors are kept informed of the major world problems of the times by the lively dis­ cussions of Sister Mary Harold R.S.M., the club's moderator. The meetings are con­ ducted under the able leadership of Sue McGoldrick, president; Janet Regan, vicepresident; and Kathy Hughes, secretary.

The main project undertaken by the girls this year was a trip to New York to ob­ serve the General Assembly of the United Nations at work. The girls found this really inspiring.

Sister Mary Harold R.S.M., is to be con­ gratulated on a very successful first year with the club.

President Sue McGoldrick conducts a meeting of the World Affairs Forum in the library. Current world problems are discussed by the group at their meetings.

The Debating Club meets every Mon­ day afternoon under the capable direc­ tion of Sister Mary Sylvia R.S.M. Debating is one of our most beneficial and enjoyable clubs. In discussing topics of national interest and impor­ tance, the members broaden their horizons, challenge their minds, and develop clarity and poise in speak­ ing. Members are also given the op­ portunity to meet boys and girls from schools all over New England.

Although the preparations for a de­ bate involve an investment in time and labor, the dividends in satisfaction and fun more than balance the in­ vestment.

To many of our girls. Saint Mary's, Bay View, is not only a school but also a home.

Students of the Bay come from all over New England. Also residing here are eleven students from Cent^'al and South America and Cuba.

Students living in the relaxed atmos­ phere of Saint Joseph's Hall are under constant guidance and careful atten­ tion of the Sisters of Mercy, The average school day of a resident student is one of careful timing. It begins with daily Mass for those who wish to attend. Then students have breakfast, and get ready for school, where all remain until 2;45. After class hours are occupied by recreational ac­ tivities, study, and finally a good night of well-deserved sleep.

Almost before we are aware of it, Commencement Week is upon us. This is what we have been thinking of since we began our studies at the Bay. Then, to us, commencement meant only a beginning, but now that it is here it takes on a different meaning.

This week will be set down as one of the most memorable phases of our lives. It spells an end to our good times at Saint Mary's, to many cher­ ished friendships, and means, to most of us, the beginning of a new life.
