How GLORIOUS a dogma is that of the Immaculate Conception! Wliat strength vibrates in the joy and enthusiasm with which we greet its centenary! It celebrates the realizalion of everything which the Psalms and the prophets had foretold concerning the triumph of God and His Mother. Mary, the Gracious and Immaculate Virgin, appears as the “Sign in Heaven” exalted far above all other creatures. It is a privilege then, to dedicate the 1954 McAuleyan to her, as our tribute to Mary Immaculate in this holy Marian Year.

His Excellency, the Most Reverend Russell J. McVinney, D.D., Bishop of Providence, lakes il fatherly interest in Saint Mary’s Academy, Bay View.

His ability as an educator is widely acclaimed, and during the past year he conducted a very suc­ cessful drive for funds to enlarge Our Lady of Providence, diocesan minor seminary for the edu­ cation of boys aspiring to the priesthood.

Bishop McVinney, devoted to the Mother of God, formally opened the Marian Year by pontificating at a Solemn Evening Mass in the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Providence. He has also organized a schedule of special devotions through­ out the diocese for the observance of this year dedicated to Mary, God’s Mother and ours.

Reverend Joseph Bracq, chaplain of Saint Mary’s Academy, Bay View, is also editor of The Provi­ dence Visitor, Catholic diocesan weekly.

In October, Father made a trip to Rome, as one of the diocese’s representatives at the dedication of the new North American College in the Eternal City. His Holiness, Pope Pius XII, dedicated the college inaugurating the three days celebration, and Father Bracq was privileged to stand close to His Holiness during the ceremony. Cardinal Stritch of Chicago presided the second day, and Cardinal Spellman of New York, the third.

Father Bracq then toured Italy for several weeks, prior to his return to Providence, and all enjoyed his accounts of the wonderful trip.

Mother Mary Hilda, R.S.M., Mother Provincial of the Province of Providence, provides for the spiritual and temporal welfare of the faculty. She is responsible for the appointment and training of all Sister of Mercy teachers. Under her capable administration a new program has been inaugu­ rated wherein Sisters will obtain their degrees be­ fore beginning teaching duties, thereby raising higher the standards of all Mercy staffed schools.

Bay View honors Mother Provincial each year on her feast day.

1 Assisting Mother Provincial in the governing o o of the Province of Providence is Mother Mary Catherine, R.S.M., Assistant Provincial. Besides fulfilling her duties as superior of the Provincial House in Cumberland, Rhode Island, Mother Mary Catherine, R.S.M., also accompanies and aids Mother Provincial in the visitation of the Province.

Both attend all affairs at Bay View and work to advance its standing in every way possible.

Sister Mara" Beatrice, R.S.M., is superior of the convent at Bay View, and is in charge of the wel­ fare of all resident students of the academy. In December, Sister celebrated the golden jubilee of her Religious Profession, and was the recipient of many spiritual and temporal gifts to commemorate the glorious occasion.

Heading the faculty al Bay View is Sister Mary Edward. R.S.M., principal of both the elementary and high schools. This past year Sister has started an intensive athletic program for the boys of the grammar school, and has been instrumental in beginninge<y a Bay View Band.

A member of the Province of Providence's board of secondary education. Sister was a delegate to the national convention of the group in April, at Chicago, Illinois.

Saint Mary’s Academy, Bay View, an ultra-mod­ ern hoarding and day school for girls, kindergarten through senior high school, and a day school for boys, kindergarten through grade eight, is situated on picturesque Narragansett Bay, in Riverside, Rhode Island, a short distance from the city of Providence.

It is conducted by the Religious Sisters of Mercy.

In the senior division, classical, scientific, and com­ mercial courses are offered with extra-curricular activities, music, gym. gym, arl, art, glee club, home eco­ nomics, journalism, library science, orchestra, and basketball, at the choice of each student.

Him, THE IHHIIILITi: EOKEPTION The prefect of the sodality, members of the board, and the senior class officers represent the outstanding characteristics of true Bay View girls.

They are chosen by their classmates because of their ability. Reliable leaders, capable of raising Bay View’s standards ever higher, these girls take charge of many projects and activities throughout

the year. They conduct sodality and class meetings supervise the filling of baskets distributed at Thanksgiving and Christmas, appoint ana and serve on committees for plays and proms, and perform numerous other duties. Many of them are also active in the various extra-curricular clubs.

Under the direction of Sister Mary Camilla, R.S.M., the Stella Matutina Choristers are completing another success­ ful year. The girls, robed in their blue and gold gowns, entertained many people during the joyous Christmas season. They sang for the three outdoor Benedictions at the annual Corpus Christi Procession. Members also made a very pleasant recording for the “Treasury of Song.” This was enjoyed by all who heard it. Practice for the juniorsenior glee club is held every Monday and Tuesday. At these practices the girls work hard and strive for the per­ fection shown in their public appearances.

Senior and junior dramatists, under the direction of Sister Mary Kieran, R.S.M., produce a number of varied and interesting programs throughout the year. The officers of the club elected for the nineteen fifty-three-fifty-four school year are; Phyllis McDoIe, president; Eileen Almeida, vice-president; Florence Rose, secretary; and Patricia King, treasurer.

For their first performance in November, the group joined with members of the sophomore and freshman classes in presenting “That All May Be One,” an international pageant in three acts. Portraying in song, dance, and story, the flags of nations, the brotherhood of nations, and Christ, the King of nations, the play excellently expressed the theme of “all mankind united under one God. At the December sodality meeting, dramatists of senior three gave an outstanding presentation, “Queen of Many Names.” Constance Masse played the lead of an active sodalist living the Litany of Our Lady.

At Christmas lime the club presented a choral exposition, Their two seleclions, “Melody Immortal,” depicti ng the origin of “Silent Night,” and “The Gift,” a Christmas song story, were received with much applause.

In February the junior members enacted the marvelous story, “Bernadette of Lourdes,” with Eileen Almeida in the leading role. In this, their first individual production, the juniors displayed their ability to carry on the fine work of the seniors. ^9

HOME Sconotnics

The home economics class this year was divided into two semesters under the direction of Sister Mary Joannes, R.S.M. The first semester was devoted to sewing. Smart casual skirts and buck towels were made, the latter being presented to their mothers by the girls as Christmas gifts.

Cooking was taught during the second semester. The girls learned the basic principles of starches, sugars, proteins, pastries, and vegetables. iJ j

The gay lilt of music played in one’s favorite tempo put all in a dancing mood for the annual Sophomore Valentine Hop. As girls and escorts whirled amidst hearts and flowers, all agreed that it was a night to remember.

Girls escorted by more distinguished and definitely older companions arrived, one night in April, for the Father-Daughter Dance, Dads heartily re­ sponded to the swinging music and surprised their doubting daughters with expert dancing ability.

All the girls will never forget this special night when Dads were their best boy friends.

The Senior-Junior Prom is held annually in the spring in the exquisite social room of Saint Jo­ seph’s Residence Hall. It is a formal affair, and the climax of the academy social season. The high­ light of the evening is the crowning of the prom queen by her escort, who both then lead the mem­ bers of the queen’s court into the Coronation Wahz.

Corpus Christi is solemnized at Bay View by an outdoor procession and triple Benedictions at the three campus shrines. AU faculty members and students, as well as invited monsignorii and priests take part.

After weeks of anticipation, coinnicncement week finally arrives. The first memorable event is the visit to Mother of Mercy Novitiate, which is made annually by the prospective graduates. Here they have the pleasure of encountering former Bay View girls who have now become Sister of Mercy novices.

On Parents’ Night, Mothers and Dads are cordially invited to witness honor awards. The graduatin class prepares a playlet for the happy occasion.

Next on the list of activities is Class Day. This is «v D

highlighted by the reading of the class will, which reveals the bequests to undergraduates. Then a step is taken into the future as the class prophecy is read amidst amused countenances.

A banquet is given for the graduating class by the alumnae, as a gift of enrollment. Graduates’ Mothers are present, also. The juniors participate in the events of the week by preparing a luncheon for the seniors as a farewell from the under­ graduates.

The most important day of all!

Clad in white caps and gowns, graduates gather in the chapel for the last moment of prayer as a class. Assembled on the campus, they form the academic procession and proceed to the audi­ torium. After receiving their diplomas and lis-

tening to the enlightening words of the Bishop and guest speakers, they leave the portals of this beloved Alma Mater. Their thoughts wander back to every moment spent within, remembering their training, hoping to be a credit, and leaving their hearts within its safe embrace.
