FOREWORD + In preparing this fourth edition of The McAuleyan our ambition has been to imitate the example of our predecessors in singing the up-to-the-minute praises of our dear Academy. Since the tendency in modern advertising is to let pictures tell the story, we have placed in these pages as many as possible of the dear faces and places which have helped to create the happy atmosphere of our senior year.

We say "senior year’’ because for us the usual fouryear pattern of high-school life was upset by the dis­ astrous fire which occurred when we were sophomores, and it was not until we became seniors, that we actual­ ly spent a whole school year of one hundred and eighty days on Bay View campus.

How beautiful and modern everything now is, and how we love it all! Yet what fond recollections we have of "the good old days" which, in some mysterious manner, stamped us indelibly with what is popularly known as "Bay View spirit.

THEME + Just what does that ring which we receive so formally from His Excellency, the Most Reverend Bishop, at graduation, mean to us? Should it not symbolize something very solemn? Could it not be a contract binding us to live up to the ideals of Bay View?

The logical answer is, "Yes.” Then why not choose "Opera­ tion Fidelity” for our Year Book Theme? Why not make a life­ long pledge to keep this theme constantly in mind? No sooner said than done—the step has been taken.

Henceforth we, the senior class of 1950—Christian soldiers in The Church Militant—belong to "Operation Fidelity.” We’ll obey the Message of Fatima; we’ll answer the call for Christo­ phers—always on the alert for directions from headquarters at "Operation Fidelity.

3^ What could be more natural during this Holy Year than to dedicate ourselves and our Year Book to our Holy Father, Pope Pius XII? By Divine Decree he is the Visible Head of the one true Church which has always protected the rights and interests of students like our­ selves, in whom it seems future citizens both of this world and of heaven. Behind the Holy Father stands Christ Our Lord. It is said that it might be wiser not to think always of the Pope as a sovereign and a pontiff, but frequently to think of him familiarly, as a man, frail and very human, who has the burden of the world to bear.

Who knows, one Hail Mary said fervently each day for his intention might serve as a lever with which to lift the Iron Curtain, and disclose the Rainbow oj Peace. Al­ though we have no accurate measure of the spiritual significance of our prayers, we do know that the Holy Father depends on them—Maria's, Frances^ Joanns, Jean’s and the others—so we hereby huumbly offer our whole­ hearted allegiance to the Keeper of the Keys.

TRIBUTE + It is with joy, pride, and gratitude that we pay tribute to our beloved Bishop, His Excellency, the Most Reverend Russell J. McVinney, D.D. We experience joy because we have this opportunity to express publicly our un­ bounded admiration for his achievements—pride, because we feel it is a privilege to belong to the fortunate little flock of which he is the spiritual Shepherd—gratitude, because we are deeply conscious that we all share in the fruits of his scholarship and sanctity.

It was he who organized October’s inspirational Holy Name Rally which was such a fitting prelude to the Holy Year! It was he who sponsored Rhode Island’s out­ standing hospitality program for the visit of the Pilgrim Virgin.

We are old enough to appreciate these things and to realize also that it is he who, in unstinted measure, gives to Bay View the support which it needs in imparting to us a true philosophy of life.

MOTHER PROVINCIAL

Now that Bay View campus has another beautiful new building— St. Joseph’s Hall for resident students—we are again reminded of Mother Provincial’s constant solicitude for the interests of our Academy.

Only God knows the extent of her anxiety about the financial risk involved, yet, regardless of this, when we needed a school and dormi­ tories to replace those destroyed by fire, Mother Provincial went ahead and provided them, placing her trust in Divine Providence.

We, as graduates of 1950, are deeply grateful to Mother Provincial and we hope, as the years go by, to be among her loyal supporters.

After all, Divine Providence implies teamwork—it includes both God and the good people whom He inspires to help.

FATHER BRACQ

Rev. Joseph F. Bracq, S.T.D., has now completed another year at Bay View. In the two-fold capacity of chaplain and teacher he has for many years served our Academy in manifold ways, and we are more grateful than words can say.

Incidentally, The McAuleyan has always received special attention at The Visitor Printing Company, and we feel that Father Bracq’s being both our chaplain and their editor has worked out nicely to our advan­ tage.

We hope it isn’t selfish to wish that, for the sake of the under­ classmen, his stay at Bay View may continue on and on—far beyond the present record, 1936-1950.

A Typical Day In Some Future Year Let’s use this page to get in touch with headquarters at ’'Operation Fidelity.” We have to start sometime, you know—it’s our Theme. And, since the Holy Father’s picture on the opposite page is reminiscent of our Dedication to him and to the Holy Year, let’s apply both our Theme and our Dedication to some "typical day” in some future year of our personal lives.

The procedure of this happy day will be very simple. It will begin, of course, with the— M-orning Offering

O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer Thee my prayers, works, joys and sufferings of this day for all the in­ tentions of Thy Sacred Heart, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, in reparation for my sins, for the intentions of all our Associates, and in particular for all the inten­ tions of the Holy Father, N, B. Right away, you see, we shall have kept our promise of a daily prayer for the Holy Father.

Gradually the day will unfold its twenty-four-hour allotment of prayers, works, joys, and sufferings and we shall continue to submit it to the test of Bay View ideals. Are we still constantly trying to remem­ ber the Presence of God and to correspond with the actual graces of each moment?

Are we Christophers on that day as we perform the duties and enjoy the pleasures of our state in life? Right here, the details will vary according to the individual, but the outstanding considerations will fit in with our general questionnaire—Are we trying to spread God’s Truth by our example, at work and at recreation, at home and abroad, through our social, parish, and community activities? Are we helping to keep America beautiful by informing others about how to vote, tvhy to vote and what to vote for?

Finally, are we still faithful to the Message of Fatima.^ And, some­ time before nightfall, on that typical day in some future year, do we lead the Family Rosary in our little household, because our Blessed Mother wishes it?

That attractive red top flashing around Room 35 belongs to Peggy, “Perky’s” constant companion. Although Margaret is naturally quiet, at times, her words of wit and wisdom take us by surprise. She qualifies perfectly as a candidate for Nurse’s Training at any hos­ pital of her choice.

Arlene has a very jolly disposition and she loves to participate in social activities. She has marked talent in art, especially in photo coloring. It is rumored that she is taking con­ tracts for her classmates’ wedding pictures.

Theresa is a tall tailored-type blond—calm and competent.

Read her column in the school paper and you’ll realize how she likes sports. Dancing, also rates high, but she gen­ erally manages to keep study on her agenda too. She plans to study nursing at R. 1. State College.

Alma, a resident student, is an interesting young lady. She is rather philosophic and (much) rather mischievous. She loves horses, either alive on on canvas.

One’s senior year is comprised of a round of activities which, in retrospect, are more or less charged with emotion and find their way into Year Book illustrations.

Beginning with class elections in September and culminating with commencement exercises in June, they are freely interspersed with club organization, sports, orchestra, glee club, Cath­ olic Action, contests, parties, retreat, proms, lectures, concerts, plays, and, of course, with the solemn and serious rites of classwork, home assignments, exams, and report cards.

Shakespeare’s "Much Ado About Nothing" as staged by the University Players in our auditorium last October is still referred to as the favorite pe rformance of the year, although it has had close competition. To mention only a few examples—

The combined Boston College and Salve Regina Glee Club and Orchestra Concert for D. P. students in December was superb; especially their rendition of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic.

Each year brings an increase in registration at Bay View, so that we now have two senior, three junior, and four sophomore home­ rooms. Even rhe freshmen, who, because of the Junior High System in most schools of the vicinity, used to be a small group, now require two homerooms.

It is quite evident that these underclassmen represent "quality as well as "quantity”, and we, the seniors, have, indeed, profited by their various manifestations of school spirit. They are splendid enter­ tainers and diligent workers. Their Book Week Program and their St. Patrick’s Day performance prove the former; their generosity and enthusiasm in all kinds of competitive work prove the latter. In fact, they have, so to speak, kept the "high-and-mighty” seniors "on their toes”.

Every Wednesday for the past year, Sister Mary Eusebius, R.S.M., Superior of the Convent on the campus, has decked St. Joseph’s altar with choice flowers, and has appointed the Sisters to continuous half-hour vigils in his honor, from the end of Mass in the early morning until night prayers at 9 P. M.

Sister, who is also in charge of the resident stu­ dents, asked St. Joseph for a favor in return, namely that the building of St. Joseph’s Hall might not be abandoned as had been threatened. And St. Joseph an­ swered her prayer—the new building now stands al­ most ready for occupancy, and will soon start paying for itself.

Saint Joseph’s Hall . .

ESIGNED as a companion structure to the new school building which was completed last year, St. Joseph’s Hall is in the same restrained version of the contemporary style of architecture. The two new buildings flank the con­ vent, the residence hall to the north and the school build­ ing to the south.

The main entrance to the building, at grade level in the west facade, opens into a spacious lobby. Facing the entrance is a niche in which sits enthroned a statue of Our Lady of Mercy, At either end of the lobby, twin staircases lead to a connecting bridge at the first floor level. At each end of this bridge, a short corridor leads to public reception rooms, parlors, and a guest’s dining room.

Directly opposite the main entrance, two pairs of doors open from the bridge into the social hall, lounge, and play­ room, a vast room which extends the entire depth of the building, with two french-window doors opening on a broad terrace paved with promenade tile. A huge skylight is the dominant feature of this room, A special electric out­ let for a motion picture projector is provided in this room, with speaker circuits for sound. A conduit to the roof is provided for television antenna.

On this floor are located eight practice rooms and two studios for music students. These rooms are all sound in­ sulated. Two dormitories for pre-primary children, two six-bed dormitories, three double rooms, three rooms for the Sisters in charge, and the customary linen closets, etc., complete this floor.

On each of these floors there is a lounge, a snack room, single and double rooms, six-bed dormitories, rooms for the Sisters in charge, and the usual washrooms, etc. The snack rooms and all the washrooms have tile floors and tile w^ainscoting. Shower compartments are of marble, and toilet compartments are of enamelled metal. Windows are of aluminum. Floors are of concrete wdth coverings of as­ phalt tile and linoleum. Stairs are of steel, with concrete treads covered with linoleum. An automatic push-button elevator serves all floors.

When the sound system w^as designed for the school building, provision was made for twelve stations in the residence hall. These stations, located in lounges, social hall, dining rooms, etc., will carry radio programs, recorded music, addresses, etc,, from the stage of the school audi­ torium; they will also carry two-w^ay conversations.

Concrete walks and roads have been completed for the entire group of buildings. The roads include a wide sweeping crescent-shaped main entrance concourse, with approach and turning circles at each of the new buildings, and the entrance to the convent at the center of the crescent.

These roads are of sufficient width to permit school busses to pass each other. Secondary roads lead to and from a large macadam-surfaced and flood-lighted area behind the school building.

The lawns in front of the buildings are now being landscaped and six street lighting standards will provide ample illumination at night. Convenience and beauty fol­ low you round the clock all day at Bay Views from the time you awake in the morning and look out at acres of country­ side on the east, until you watch the sun setting in splendor over the river on the west.
