issue of the McAuleyan we commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of the founding of

Bay View.

morial of the seventy-five years Bay View

has served Catholic education in Rhode Island.

MILESTONES 1874-1949 Bay View has carried on the work of Catholic education for seventy-five happy, fruitful years. There have been changes, yes many changes since that first humble begin­ ning in the September of 1874 but through all the inevitable progress of time there still lives the one unifying purpose, the one con­ stant endeavor, the one unalterable reason for going forward in the face of difficulty; name­ ly, that youth may be firmly grounded in rhe understanding and practice of the Faith and in the Catholic way of life.

The year 1948 was scarcely a month old when disaster struck our beloved Bay View.

The tragic fire of February 5, 1948 razed our school to the ground and sent us out from Bay View to Brightridge Elementary school and to Riverside Junior High. The kindness, charity, and generosity of the public school department of East Providence as well as that of so many individuals who came to our aid will always be cherished and held in honor among us. Truly 1948 was our zero year but in the living of it we found new hope for the future, a firm determination to over­ come obstacles, and a strong bond of loyalty to our teachers and our school. t*

The period from 1875 to 1884 was note­ worthy for expansion and material growth in the way of construction and addition to the original structure.

April, 1906 brought fire which destroyed part of the original building.

September, 1906 heralded the erection of a new brick building which was ready for occupancy in March of 1908.

The Golden Jubilee year 1924 marked a very definite milestone in the history of Ba\ View with the complete equipment of a physic laboratory made possible through the gener­ osity of the late Bishop Hickey. The Ba^ View Alumnae paid tribute to this significant anniversary with the gift of a statue of Our Lady of Grace, a truly beautiful token of appreciation and good will.. &

What shall we say of 1949? It finds us in a beautiful new building; it witnesses the dedication of a modern structure which ranges from Pre-primary through senior high school; it is a year of joy, a year of jubilee, a year of thanksgiving to God for His marvelous Providence; it is a year of retrospect which looks back to that first year of 1874 and finds in each succeeding year the impress of divine protection and divine guidance. It is also a year which looks to the future and places Bay View with its teachers, students and friends in the Heart of Him who is not limited by time or change—the all loving Heart of the Great Teacher Christ Our Lord.

A Jubilee year is most of all a year of gratitude.

It brings into

focus the constant daily kindness given so freely and so unobstrusively;

it intensifies the unselfish service of each succeeding year; it fills our minds with joy because we realize how very much we mean our grati­ tude and our appreciation. Our Chaplain and teacher Reverend Joseph

F. Bracq, S. T. D. has been with us since 1936. To him we offer very

sincere thanks for all he has done in his years with us at Bay View.

TO THE TEACHERS IN OUR SCHOOE 1874-1949 Down all our days and far across the highway of the years You nutured in our souls the seed of Faith, And waited patiently on all our little efforts In the ways of knowledge;
