A\^e have attempted to set forth in this issue all the incidents depicting the spirit and activity of the students at Bay­ view.

We have also endeavoured to make this a book which the alumnae of Bayview will enjoy and appreciate.

MOTHER MARY CATHERINE McAULEY Foundress of the Sisters of Mercy

CATHERINE McAULEY + Since our year book is entitled the MeAuleyan, it is fitting that we pay tribute to that great and holy Irish lady, Catherine Mc­ Auley, beloved foundress of the Sisters of Mercy. Let us then turn our thoughts to the Ireland of the 18th century.

As the sun shone down on Stormanstown House, Dublin, on September 29, 1787, it cast its glorious rays on the joyous hearts of Eleanor and James McAuley as they watched their new-born babe take her, then insignifi­

cant. place in this world. These proud parents could hardly know as they gazed on this little infant, later to be called Catherine, that she would some day undertake a great task in the spreading of Catholicism.

Catherine passed quickly through the first years of her life and was soon old enough to accompany her father, every Sunday after Mass, on a ride through the streets of Dublin while he talked to her of God. These rides would always take them to the poorer districts where they would pick up a number of little ragamuffins and return with them to Stormans­ town House for dinner, which was followed by a religious instruction given by James McAuley. Mrs. McAuley did not relish this Sunday ritual nor did she share her husband’s zeal for religious instruction.

As the years passed and death claimed both Eleanor and James McAuley, those little in­ structions were the foundation of Catherine’s strong adherence to the Faith as she was sent to live with Surgeon Conway and then, be­ cause of financial difficulties, to the home of Mr. Armstrong, a rigid Protestant. Tempta­ tions also beset her when the wealthy William Callahan and his wife, distant relatives of Mrs. McAuley and both Protestants, adopted Cath­ erine and brought her to live with them at Coolock House.

But her Faith surpassed all temptations and brought about the conversion

of both Mr. and Mrs. Callahan before their deaths.

At the passing of her beloved guardians, Catherine became sole heir to all their wealth.

With this fortune, she set out to accomplish a great work which she had long wished to undertake, the building of a shelter and refuge for young women and girls. This desire was completed in the erection of Baggott Street House which was officially opened on the feast of our Lady of Mercy in 1827. This insti­ tution became not only a lodging for young girls but also a home and school for poor chil­ dren and orphans.

Catherine’s assistants at Baggot Street House adopted a uniform dress which was similar to that now worn by the novices in the Sisters of Mercy. In 1828, the Archbishop, seeing the good work done by this new Institute, granted them permission to visit the sick in their homes and in hospitals. Catherine’s dream had at last materialized.

It was not until 1830 that this outstanding model of Catholicism entered the greatest phase of her life, for it was during that year that Catherine Elizabeth McAuley, with two of her assistants at Baggot Street House, began a period of training at the novitiate of the Presentation Nuns in Dublin.

A y«ar or so later, on December 12, Mother Mary Catherine and her two companions pronounced their vows and, thus, was founded the Order of the Sisters of Mercy. The Order constantly grew and within a few years consisted of more than one hundred members.

It was on November 11, 1841. that Mother McAuley finally passed into the world which she had dedicated her whole life to attain.

Now, as we look back over the life of this revered Foundress, let it be our fervent prayer (< . . that she may soon be glorified here be­ low” and in her own way help us carry on the heritage of the Faith she loved so well.

History of St. Mary's Seminary St. Mary’s Seminary, situated on a high hill commanding a clear view of Narragansett Bay, was once known as the old Howard home­ stead. This building was purchased for the purpose of relieving the strain on the very much overcrowded St. Xavier’s Academy of Providence. All the boarders were to be transferred to this new school. This transfer was completed by September of 1874. In 1875, a large building of frame con­ struction harmonizing with the original house was erected. This addition, containing a chapel, a fine exhibition hall and a fairly large dormitory, was a gift of the Clergy of Rhode Island. To this generous gift, the Mother Superior of the Sisters of Mercy added a kitchen and a laundry.

Wants were many in the early days of Bayview and the Sisters and pupils were at the' mercy of an old windmill for their water supply. But, although hardships abounded, St. Mary’s was far from a place of sadness.

Bazaars, lawn parties and plays helped to add to the Sisters’ and pupils’ enjoyment of Bayview. In 1877, St. Mary’s entered upon a transition period. It was a time of expansion and material growth as well as an in­ creased enrollment of students. In 1884, another building of two stories was erected containing classrooms and a large assembly hall. In April 19C6, fire destroyed part of the original building. As the water supply depended entirely upon a windmill, it was only a miracle which prevented the school from being entirely destroyed. In September 1906, ground was broken for a new brick structure and on the Feast of the Presentation, November 21, 1906, the cornerstone for the new St. Mary’s Seminary was laid. This building was ready for occupancy March 28, 1908. The blessing of the chapel and the consecration of the altar took place in the following July.

In 1924, St. Mary’s Seminary, Bayview celebrated its Golden Jubilee.

Fifty active years had passed since that September day in 1874, when, with a small group looking on, the new school was unlocked. Bishop Hickey, grateful for the services rendered by the Sisters at Bayview for half a century, completely equipped a physics laboratory for the students.

In the same year, the Alumnae Association, which was founded in 1915, donated a statue of Our Lady of Grace which still stands on the front lawn.

Between 1931 and 1934 a new and well-stocked library was installed in the old building, formerly used as a novitiate. The building was opened in 1936.

Bayview’s proudest boast is its Alumnae which has devoted, faithful members from coast to coast, many of whom are in the religious life.

A large number of Bayview’s graduates are numbered among the Sisters of Mercy in the diocese. On various occasions, gatherings of the alumnae have attracted members from far and wide.

Student Counci The duty of the members of this organization is to help the girls to live up to the morals and standards which are characteristic of a Bay­ view girl.

Each class has two representatives who are chosen by popular vote of their classmates. The Senior class elects a third member who presides over the entire Student Council as president, All class presidents are given honorary membership privileges.

The council members, under the auspices of Sister Mary Emeria. make new rules and enforce the old ones. Anyone who violates a rule or disobeys the Student Council in any way is usually given a warning first, and if the offence is repeated she is called before the Student Council and the Principal, who decide.s what is to be done.

This form of student law not only keeps everyone in order, but it teaches us to respect the rights of our fellow-classmates and also gives us a chance to govern ourselves in a democratic way.
