Bayside Academy opened its doors in September 1970 and has been providing students with an exceptional education ever since. At Bayside, education goes beyond the basics of reading and writing and mathematics. Our graduates excel academically and are ethical, moral leaders deeply engaged in their communities. It goes beyond the bluff.

The bluff has been a classroom, playground, lunch spot, game field, and gathering place for Baysiders for more than 50 years. Students across all grades come to enjoy the open green space and the view of Mobile Bay each day.

Bayside is more than just a place or a school. It is an attitude, a spirit, and a way of life that brings the whole family into each child’s educational journey. The Bayside experience is revealed on the faces of first grader students as they receive a decorated tree from “their” eighth grade buddy at Christmas Together; in the smiles of proud grandparents across the nation and world as they come for Grandparents Day; in the generosity of parents as they support our faculty, staff, and students on BA Giver Day; in the pride of a blue or green shirt on Admiral Day; and in the tears and hugs between peers that have been at Bayside for 15 years together as they graduate on the Bluff. It is a pride all Baysiders feel when alumni go on to greater challenges in the future–the future for which they prepared while here at Bayside.

EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER (ECC) Grades PK3–Kindergarten The Bayside journey begins in PK3. Our nurturing and caring environment welcomes students as they make the transition to a school setting. The approach to learning in the Early Childhood Center is inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy. Through exploration, discovery, and hands-on learning experiences, ECC students further develop an understanding of their world and find joy in the academic and social environment of their school experience. They are provided opportunities to work collaboratively with classmates to develop strong character and good citizenship based on Bayside’s core values. The combination of acquiring a solid academic foundation and greater social awareness along with the development of individual talents provide our youngest Admirals with the skills they need to flourish as they continue their Bayside journey into the Lower School.

LOWER SCHOOL Grades 1–4 The Lower School faculty encourage exploration, independence, and self-advocacy skills while guiding students through this important phase in their growth and maturation as learners. All students take core courses in math, science, language arts, and social studies, including history and geography. As we work with parents to guide their children academically and socially through this important time in their lives, we also keep in mind our responsibility to help students navigate the world around them. The Lower School is a place where students grow through innovative instruction, service opportunities, and character education. The classroom teachers and counselor teach Bayside’s core values throughout the day to nurture development of compassionate learners.

MIDDLE SCHOOL Grades 5–8 Students in Bayside’s Middle School learn through student-centered, hands-on activities that are exploration- and inquirybased, while encouraging them to innovate, collaborate, communicate, problem-solve, and critically reflect. Our students are encouraged to explore the different areas of campus life that interest them: athletic, artistic, and service-oriented. The Middle School curriculum is designed to facilitate a student’s transition from Lower School to the rigorous program of college preparation in the Upper School.

UPPER SCHOOL Grades 9–12 Bayside’s Upper School applies the sophisticated style of learning that produces nuanced scholarship that reaches beyond the traditional classroom. Such a learning environment, enhanced by consistent community engagement opportunities and diverse offerings for participation in student life, generates young leaders who are confident in real-world problem-solving and are able to adapt to an ever-changing global society. Upper School students expand their footprints on our campus through myriad opportunities afforded to them. In and out of the classroom, students develop the integrity, character, empathy, and personal responsibility indicative of the Bayside learning community.

College Counselors

Depth of Knowledge (DOK) Upper School functions within a unique DOK schedule. This blended schedule utilizes two traditional 7-period days along with three DOK days. Grounded in evidence-based research, this schedule provides longer periods of time for students and teachers to investigate learning objectives and key topics more effectively.

Wellness At Bayside Academy, a premium is placed on balancing happiness and high achievement. In an increasingly dynamic, unpredictable world, it is essential that the social and emotional well-being of our community members, most notably our faculty and students, remains precious. ARTS Bayside Academy understands the need for a robust and carefully crafted arts curriculum. Our rich curriculum helps to develop Bayside students in ways that more traditional content areas do not, resulting in increased literacy, creativity, critical thinking, discipline, and overall academic success. From planning to practice, art—in all its forms—helps students learn from and connect to others and see projects through to completion. Students in Lower School receive twice weekly classroom instruction in music and in art. Middle and Upper School students may choose to enrich their schedules with personalized classes like AP studio art or advanced band. Beginning in the fifth grade and continuing throughout Upper School, students may choose to participate in band or chorus. Completion of our music curriculum prepares students to study for a career as a professional musician or simply to continue a lifelong appreciation of music. Private music instruction in piano and/or strings is available as well beginning in the 1st grade.

ATHLETICS Athletics play an important role in the full Bayside Academy experience. Bayside offers outstanding programs and the chance for students to excel through sportsmanship, drive, and teamwork. Students are encouraged to participate in at least one of the many sports offered. Bayside has a Youth Development League (YDL) that provides opportunities for students in Grades 1–6. Any student may participate, regardless of level of ability. The goal of YDL athletics is to develop skills, encourage cooperation, and foster a love of the game while providing a competitive and fun outlet for students. Starting in the seventh grade studetns transition to the varsity athletic program. Bayside is a member of the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) as a Division 3A school.
