Springtime is here,
and with it comes warmth, flower buds, sunshine, and if we’re lucky, maybe even a Spring Break getaway! In the excitement, it is easy to forget the inevitable road bumps. Spring weather in Michigan is never reliable. There are storms causing travel nightmares and potholes that can be the size of a car. If you’re leaving town on a vacation, don’t be surprised to arrive home to a foot of snow in your driveway. However, the moment that spring sunshine hits and that last piece of ice has melted, all is forgotten. If you notice the image on this page, you might think we (myself and BayLife Publisher Teri Gorsline) are on a fabulous vacation. In reality, this picture was taken at the 8th Annual Celebrity DreamRoom Classic held on February 8th at Golden Fowler. Teri was one of the celebrities chosen to create a “Dream Room.” She designed a tropical oasis filled with umbrellas, coconuts, blue skies, steel drum music, and alluring “island vibes.” (See our On The Town section for more pictures from the creative charity event.) The night raised over 48k for Child & Family Services of Northwestern Michigan. Go Teri!
This event, and so many other functions in the area, showcase the generosity of the people in Northern Michigan. I am continually impressed by the giving in our community. I had the honor of attending The Great Lakes Children’s Museum’s “A-Ha!” Annual Hands-on Learning Auction on February 23rd at the Traverse City Golf & Country Club. The gala was a chance to dress up and raise money to support creative learning for our community’s children. Did you know that each year, the Great Lakes Children’s Museum provides free passes valued at more than $2,400 to local organizations? Make sure you check out page 14 for On The Town pictures of the generous attendees. One more inspiring story from this issue: the Michigan Challenge Traditional Sail Training program for Gold Star Teens on Perception Tall Ship. Gold Star Teens are children of veterans, and captain Bryan Smith has created an amazing program to support these individuals. You can view this beautiful vessel on our cover, and turn to page 32 to learn more about their program! I hope you enjoy this spring issue of BayLife Magazine. You have sold over $100 million in closed sales as a Realtor, which is an astonishing achievement. What is the secret to your success? Mindful service to my clients. If someone truly wants to sell or buy, I can and will help them achieve their goals. There are so many variables and emotions that are flying once a client decides to make a move. My job is to help them achieve the goals they express, or help them see that their goals may not be achievable. Clients come back year after year, many of them become my friend because I did not talk them into something that did not fit. I would rather take longer and get it right for my clients so their experience is valuable and not regrettable. What was your journey to Traverse City? I was originally from Romeo, Michigan. I had worked in the radio business and married an on air personality. We had 3 kids within 18 months. We moved a lot, and had 15 homes in 13 years. This took a toll on my marriage. Single and living in Greenville, South Carolina with 3 kids, the only place I would consider living was in Traverse City. I rented a home on 12th Street sight unseen. The next door neighbor was quite handsome and eventually became my husband Jake! Buying and selling so many homes and having a background in marketing, I decided to pursue a Real Estate career. I took on three jobs to support my family while I was going through the process of becoming a Realtor. It was very important to me to be there for my kids, and a Real Estate career could offer that flexibility. I got licensed and took a slow pace to be a smart agent in this business. I studied home construction and Real Estate law that further broadened my education. After earning $80,000 commission on a big sale, the rest is history. The end result: 22 years married and going strong, 27 successful years so far in Real Estate, and 4 very successful kids. I am very thankful to TCAPS, this incredible community, and my profession that led to all the success with my family and my career. In a competitive field of local Realtors what would you say sets you apart? Everyone has their style, I have mine. There are a lot of great agents in this market that have carved out a niche for themselves. There is plenty of room for all of us to be successful. If you could have a super power, what would it be? Helping kids who were born into terrible situations get a clean slate, a level playing field, and abundance of hope. What is something that we would be surprised to know about you? I love to play in the dirt, camping and riding ATV’s! It’s great fun! My friends and I take a trip to Manitou where we hike 7 miles to our “Secret Spot.” When I am there I live in the dirt and cook gourmet meals from a little camp stove. We pack food and water bottles filled with wine. What’s your perfect Up North Day? In the winter: A sunny day with fresh powder on the VASA Skate Ski track. In the summer: Sailing to Beaver Island with my husband.

“Yum!” “Oh, Wow!” “Yes!” These are direct quotes from tasters of Northpor, a specialty estate wine that’s grown and created by 45 North Winery in Lake Leelanau, and it’s a stunner. It sparks an audible reaction from most of those who taste it. It’s been almost three years since the most recent vintage was available and sold out very quickly. Northpor’s highly anticipated return is here! Winemaker Jay Briggs says that this port style wine, with a strong cult following, is best paired with a dense dark chocolate or a maduro cigar. As a fortified estate wine, the grapes grown on the 45 North property are fermented, fortified with neutral grape spirits, then barrel aged using retired whiskey barrels. This completely local process gets tweaked and adjusted, then the wine rests for three years in barrels from Traverse City Whiskey Company. Although the blend has changed over the years, this rendition is 50% Marquette, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 25% Merlot grapes: all grown on the 45 North vineyard in Lake Leelanau. Northpor has become a favorite of nearly every taster that’s tried it. “Customers at the bar virtually sell it for us,” says Tom Balazs, Tasting Room Manager. “We maintain a casual and friendly atmosphere at the tasting bar, and I see customers making friends with people they’ve never met over the experience of tasting Northpor. When customers hear others experience it, they’re encouraged to try it.” I hope you’re able to find that occasion to taste Northpor, even if it’s completely spontaneous.

Their menu emphasizes fresh ingredients in simple but surprising combinations, making each drink an adventure. Reservations will provide you with an enigmatic password; however, walk-ins are encouraged! “People have the misconception that we require a membership to enter, or only admit people with reservations. This is not the case! All are welcome!” says owner Christine Keefe.

The Cairns have been committed to preserving Sleder’s historical building, its 12-foot tin ceiling, 21foot mahogany bar, original booths and tables, iron parlor chairs and stools, and its most notable characteristic: the slab siding that echoes Traverse City’s sawmill past. TRADITIONAL SAIL TRAINING FOR GOLD STAR TEENS
PERCEPTION HAS SAILED from New Zealand to Australia, Brazil, the
Galapagos, the Caribbean, and Portugal. After years of traveling the world, the magnificent vessel is now in a new role, anchored in the freshwaters of Lake Michigan, spending time sailing the crystal blue waters of West Bay. It is making a life changing impact on grieving youth, veterans, and veterans’ families. Its main mission, sailing training with Gold Star Teens, which are children of fallen military heroes. Perception is a rare treasure: the fact that she is a Herreschoff-designed schooner sets her apart from other boats with just a glance. Built in 1985 from plans by the famous naval architect L. Francis Herreshoff, the 68-foot steel-hulled tall ship has a mast that stands 70 feet tall and is fitted with stunning teak woodwork. Its beauty is only surpassed by the joy it brings to those who get to sail aboard. The boat’s current ownership belongs to the board of a local non-profit called Michigan Challenge Traditional Sail Training, lead by Captain Bryan Smith. The group provides tuition-free traditional sail training as developed by Tall Ships America to Gold Star Teens (children of fallen military heroes), veterans and their families, and grieving youth. The experiences they offer include teen sailing adventures, veteran’s sails, and volunteer opportunities for local enthusiasts. While on board, guests learn sailing skills and participate in team building in a fun atmosphere! 35

This unique sailing program is designed to bring grieving kids together in a healing environment
ONE OF MICHIGAN CHALLENGE’S most exciting initiatives is the Gold
Star Teen Program, which is available to groups of up to five boys or girls from throughout Michigan who have lost a parent in the military. The teens spend four days and three nights in the summer months on board Perception learning how to sail. The unique program, based out of Northport, begins with an introduction to the schooner and discussion about the different parts of the boat, safety, line coiling and docking. The program is designed to bring people together in a healing environment. “Teen survivors often feel isolated, since few of their school acquaintances know what it’s like to lose a loved one, especially violently in war,” explains Barbara Horning, Board Secretary and Perception crew member. “They don’t all live in the same community, nor are they always connected to other military families. Our program gives them a chance to be with other young people who understand what they’ve been through, have had the same emotions, know that they’re normal, and are a part of a special group of survivors.” 37

DURING THE TEEN’S FIRST OUTING,
students learn how to raise the sails, mind sheets, tacking, jibing, steering, and tying knots. The group returns to the dock at the end of the day to reflect and talk about what they learned. During down time, the sailors have moments to connect and get to know each other personally. There is also time to swim at the beach, play volleyball, and explore the shops in Northport. By the last evening, the teens have usually opened up to each other about their experiences as children of fallen military heroes. “When we first meet the kids, I like to think about the possibilities in their lives. We want them to know that they don’t need fixing. We just show them that their future is bright and there are a lot of new and wonderful things ahead to be discovered in their world, like the thrill of being on the water in a beautiful boat and letting the free and powerful wind take you where you want to go,” explains Captain Bryan Smith. “The teen years are difficult, they’re not children anymore, and they’re not adults. There are a lot of things they can’t do. It’s easy for them to become immersed in the artificial world of screens: TV, video games, smartphones. Living on a boat is real, with new friends, new experiences, and new things to learn. It’s being face-to-face with reality.” The students walk away with more than just sailing knowledge. They learn that they are not alone, that there are others who have been through similar traumas and coped in different ways, and that nature and learning are wonderful healers. As crew aboard Perception, they gain friendship, leadership skills, and a sense of security. Teens aren’t the only individuals who have the opportunity to spend time on the tall ship. The group offers Veteran’s Family Sails and excursions with the “Friends of Perception” (see page 39) on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the summer. The 2-3 hour sails allow visitors to participate or simply sit and enjoy the beautiful blue waters of Lake Michigan. Crew and guest often bring treats and drinks to enjoy- Yum!

since it travels the Grand Traverse Bay docking at various ports, including Discovery Pier, Clinch Marina, and Northport. This summer, Perception also plans to participate in the 2019 Tall Ships Challenge, where tall ships from all over the world come to the Great Lakes for festivals at various ports. Oh, what a crew! All of this is possible because of the volunteers who make Michigan Challenge happen, including Captain Bryan Smith, along with Dr. Susan Wainwright, a cofounder of Michigan Challenge with an expertise in adolescent psychotherapy. Captain Bryan is also a co-founder of Michigan Challenge, the board president, and captain. He is involved on a daily basis in every aspect of Perception’s maintenance, use, and mission. He trains crew and teaches the kids. Michigan Challenge is made up of 100% volunteers! There are no paid staff. BECOME A “Friend of Perception” For a yearly membership fee of $185, you can become a “Friend of Perception”. The dues are used to support yearly operational costs for the Tall Ship. Members are eligible for free sails on Perception Saturdays and Sundays from 1pm to 3pm throughout the sailing season, and can bring guests when space is available. Veteran sailors, landlubbers, and those who would like to learn to sail a schooner are all welcome. Members are asked to contribute a minimum of 15 volunteer hours. This may be in the form of maintenance work, working with kids, skilled clerical, financial, fundraising, or technical help.

JUST ABOUT ANYONE who wants to sail can join in on the nautical
adventures, whether they be experienced sailors, veterans, simply want to learn, or just want to sit back and enjoy a sail on a beautiful classic schooner, by joining the group as a “Friend of Perception” (see sidebar). The group is a social organization comprised of a diverse group of individuals, including many retirees. Some have skills to help restore Perception, while others are interested in working with youth, veterans or are veterans themselves. Many are simply friends and family who don’t sail but are eager to learn how. 43

RESTORATION IS AN ONGOING year-round project for
“Friends of Perception” and the board members. Once obtained by the non-profit in 2017, the vessel was de-rigged in Massachusetts and brought back to Michigan. Volunteers then had the challenge of figuring out how to put it back together. Luckily, she sailed beautifully on the waters of Lake Michigan. And the work did not end there. Many hands and hours have been spent restoring the ship to its best condition in years. So far, much of the teak woodworks and deck boxes have been recreated along with refinishing teak in the cabin. The electrical systems have been updated, new paint has been applied, and the group is working towards a new engine. Plans for the future include replacing bunk mattresses, seat cushions, remodeling the head, and obtaining a more practical steering wheel. “It is amazing to me that we all have specific skills to bring to the organization, which are vitally necessary for us to survive and grow. There is no overlapping,” says Captain Bryan. “It seems that when we need an expert in a particular area, they appear. We are all devoted to our outcome and our mission. It is all fresh and new for 2019. We have been extremely fortunate.” Funding for Michigan Challenge comes from various locations. The group accepts donated boats on trailers. They receive grants, donations, and collect membership fees. In addition, they offer charters of up to 12 passengers and show their boat at The Tall Ship Festivals. “We have a rare, beautiful, historic schooner with which we can do good things for veterans and kids. I love sailing on a tall ship,” says Horning. “I love, and am humbled by the gratitude of the people we serve.”

hen it comes to the comforts of your home, don’t settle for ordinary colors or dull patterns. Instead, incorporate intrigue and personality with wallpaper that expresses your personal style. That’s right! Wallpaper is back, big time! Today’s take on wallpaper is a walk on the wild side, with endless options that give you the freedom to make your own statement with relatively little expense and time. Gone are the days of oppressively dark hues and floral wallpapers that swallow an entire room. Whether you want to say something dramatic, relaxed, or add a level of depth, you can completely change the feel of a room with wallpaper. Geometrics, dramatic florals, digital prints, bold metallics, fun textures, and hand-painted murals are only a few of the trends. The options are endless. I love thinking out-of-the-box for placement. Choosing the right wallpaper on the ceiling, behind shelves, in frames, lining drawers or in the back of a bookcase can add dimension and spruce up any room. The entire concept came from a stack of pictures serving as inspiration, and a team willing to try something new and original. The breathtaking beauty of the home begins at the start of the property. Immaculate landscaping and tall juniper trees provide a peaceful, intimate atmosphere. Silver metal accents the outside rooflines and catches the light of the sun. A double glass door entryway with an intricate design opens up into an open, impressive space.

A long island in the middle adds further storage and entertaining options. High end appliances contribute to the opulence, and include Sub-Zero, Wolf and Miele. An eat-in dining area occupies the open area at the end of the kitchen, and serves as an unforgettable setting for anything from casual family dinners to elegant parties.

The large hanging chandelier in the center of the spiral staircase was custom made for the space, and when the morning light comes through the house, it’s filled with spectacular prisms. Each drop of crystal beads falls like rain down the curving staircase. Two low hanging chandeliers twist horizontally over the dining table and produce sparkles and glamour to the ambiance. Happiness and light is always evident in each room, providing a pleasant energy. The home resonates with a feeling of incredible warmth and comfort even though it is large in size.

An icon of Suttons Bay since 1946, “The Bay” — the only movie theatre in Leelanau County — was scheduled to go dark and close on the last day of 2018. The Bahle family, who had owned the venue since 1976, announced in November that they were unable to continue managing the theatre and would exit the business. Members of the community stepped forward in an unprecedented outpouring of support, and in just a few short weeks, took over operations of the theatre to keep it open. Now run “by the community, for the community,” the reorganized Bay Community Theatre has become a non-profit organization. The volunteer team has signed new movie distribution agreements with the main film studios and is busy planning a mix of new releases, classics, a film series, live performances and sponsored events. Additional improvements are underway for concessions and other elements important to a quality movie-going experience. “The Bay” in 1976, just before a massive 2-year renovation undertaken by its owners, the Bahle family of Suttons Bay.
