the Water. Because let us agree, we all live here because of the water. In the water, is my favorite of all the three, because we may be the first to introduce you to an incredible artist, Derek DeYoung. His mind-blowing art makes paintings of fish, jump off the canvas. That doesn’t mean he’s not well known; he's super successful, he’s just been more in the Fly Fishing circuit and was living in Montana. Derek, a Michigan native, along with his wife Janell moved back home to the Mitt settling recently in Traverse City. He grew up knowing two things as a kid, he loved to fish, and he loved to draw. So he knew he wanted to be a fish artist, he didn’t even know if the job existed. But with his raw talent and determination, along with loving support from his family, he graduated from Art School and pursued his dreams. His work is on the walls of The Boathouse Restaurant, so as you peruse the pages it may all of a sudden look familiar. We love how it was so vibrant, and a bold wake-up and welcome to summer.

ho’s with me? We get so teased and taunted at this time of year with a sunny day high when everyone is cheery, and life is good, then followed the next by a gray, dreary down in the dumps day. It's like a bloody rollercoaster. I'm keeping my fingers, toes and everything else crossed wishing and hoping for a spectacular summer like last year. How miraculous was that? Mother Nature went all out. I even swam in the warm bay, and that never happens, unless I fall the heck off my stand up paddle board. Which, is why I’m a smooth, dead calm, paddler kind of girl. I love to take my board out for a spin at Power Island early in the morning before the masses all start to flock. We always laugh it’s like the scene from Jaws as the boats all start to head for the Island, at around 11 am, ready to spend a day in the sun, living the northern dream. I also think a food truck should be shipped there, just for emergencies? Don’t you think? I’m already in my summer zone just thinking about a boat day at Power Island! Woo Hoo. We wanted to get our readers in their Summer Happy Place too, so we made all the themes; Being on the Water, By the Water and even In

If you love anything even a tiny bit nautical, you will be ready to set sail to Harbor Springs. The Pier Restaurant is the ultimate by the water dining experience. It begins the minute you feel like you have stepped upon a luxury yacht. The restaurants interior mirrors the rich and famous sailing vessels and the newly transformed deck rivals the view and atmosphere of the most exclusive yacht clubs all around the world. It a mecca of nautical style and elegance, and the food is remarkable too. I have to admit I did sip (a lot) on the creamsicle cocktail at the photo shoot, just to make sure it was publisher approved. Yum. Pretty sure on the water is where we all aspire to own a little piece of summer happiness. So our story that introduces you to Heather Gillow and Jim Smolak, (who you may know from a little bar called 7-Monks?) truly inspiring. They found a small house, a diamond in the rough, in a sweet location that even included a little beach house on the water. To get the full extent of how much this was a labor of love, over time, patience and perseverance we even included a before photo that Heather sent us. You really won't believe it. I think it will have everyone looking for a beach bargain to remodel, myself included. I was astonished at the transformation. Heather and Jim are just excited to sit back and relax finally. Purse Power Good happens here! March 13th marked the 5th Annual Goodwill Power of the Purse Brunch. Attendees dug deep into their purses and hearts to raise funds to support the Goodwill Inn. Last year over 500 people in the community relied on this safe haven for shelter, most are women and children. Bay Ridge Community Director When did you start working for Bay Ridge? I began my career on Monday, July 28, 2003, almost fourteen years ago. Over the years many things have changed. I now oversee the entire campus; which includes two independent buildings and an assisted living center that also offers a secured memory care wing. What is your favorite memory from working at Bay Ridge? There are so many memories as I reflect back over the years. One of the most memorable was the opening of the East community and our assisted living in July of 2006. The opening of these buildings changed the entire face of the Bay Ridge Campus. Offering additional services and choices to Seniors in our area. What would you say your best quality is? My ability to see the larger picture, or the entire pie. To see how each employee’s role is a piece of the pie and being amazed at how well the entire group works together to make such a wonderful impact in the lives of our residents. What is your favorite pastime or hobby? I love the water. After years of sailing Lake Michigan, boating on Elk Lake with my late husband, I now enjoy Kayaking whenever I can. Why did you move here to Traverse City? I became a resident of Traverse City in 2013 after residing in Elk Rapids for over thirty years. I sold my family home and transitioned into a new life in Traverse City. I love it here. I am close to work, my parents and all the amenities that the City offers.

What is one thing people don’t know about you that would surprise them? I am very dedicated to the work that I do. But I also enjoy “my” time. I love to cook and I’m an avid reader. But I truly love design and decorating. From painting an old piece of furniture or helping a friend move furniture around their living room. When you were growing up what did you want to be? I always thought I wanted to be a teacher. And in a way, I guess I am. I hope I teach and help staff, educate families to make their lives better. I have met some amazing people who have forever changed me. I don’t know if they know how much they helped me on days when I felt discouraged or uncertain. But their real kindness helped see me through and I hope that I have been able to do this for the people that we serve at Bay Ridge. What is one quote you live by? Years ago, when I was working the large corporate world…. my dad wrote on a piece of paper “treat the president of the company, and the janitor the same …. With respect” What’s your perfect Northern Michigan day? I am an early morning person so, watching the sun rise over the water with a cup of coffee in my hand would be a perfect start to my day. Then working in my flower garden, being on the water and ending the day having dinner by the water with the one I care deeply about.

Big Opportunity A luxury hotel with parking a mile from downtown sounds too good to be true, right? Not if Traverse City builder and developer Ron Walters and Cadillac developer and investor Pat Johnson have anything to say about it. The former Scuba North Property on an 11-acre parcel of land on West Bay Beach has long been an eye sore to passersby. Their proposition to build West Shore Hotel and Marina (a 115-room hotel with a 28-slip marina) across the street is bold. Developers Ron and Pat

are planning on gearing the hotel towards families making each unit with two bedrooms. That’s not all; each room will be double the size of your average hotel suite making them a massive 936 square feet. The project has been submitted to the Elmwood Township and has been received well by the town Supervisor Jeff Shaw. The hotel approval process seems straightforward, but the marina is a different story. With plenty of hoops to still jump through nothing is set in stone yet.

TITANIC ALASKAN KING CRAB FEMURS Ingredients 2 Each Red King Crab Femurs 1 Cup Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice

2 oz. Frozen Small Diced Butter 2 tsp. Sugar Salt and Pepper to taste

Procedure: 1. Begin by bringing grapefruit juice to a simmer. 2. While waiting for juice to simmer, place crab femurs in steamer and steam for approximately 4 minutes. 3. As grapefruit juice begins to simmer, add cold butter a little at a time swirling the pan to create the emulsion (Grapefruit juice buerre blanc).

4. On a metal surface, place the 3 supremes of grapefruit and sprinkle with sugar and brulee (caramelize) with a torch. 5. As the crab is finishing the steaming process, add fresh parsley and salt and pepper as needed to sauce. 6. When the Crab is ready, remove from the steamer and add to the sauce to allow the sauce to being to penetrate the crab sections. 7. After a few seconds remove the crab sections and begin to plate. 8. When Brad Harrison emailed us with an idea for a local story, we were intrigued. We love to bring stories to light whenever we can, celebrating our neighbors doing genuinely good things. Brad's wife, Judy may be familiar to you, her never-ending passion for raising money and awareness for local nonprofits launching Swing Shift and the Stars has become an epic yearly event. Between the two, they are helping to change the world. A few years ago, Brad was touched by Christ's Hope International organization that raises money for children affected by Aids in Africa, left as orphans, living in extreme poverty. Inspired by an avid cyclist on the board of the organization, the group holds a Ride for Hope – Coast to Coast bicycle ride. It's held every two years and funds the orphans school uniforms, food, school fees, medical care, and caregivers. In 2015 Brad was on his trusty bicycle giving it all he had, in the brutal Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts. “I was dying, and I thought to myself, why am I doing this?” recalls Brad. Through the 26

pain and determination to finish, he also found clarity. “There needed to be a direct connection to the ministry," says Brad. The next Ride for Hope should be in Africa. The idea was hatched, with a 2-year timeframe to make it happen. Ride Africa June 14th – 22nd 2017. The goal to raise $300,000. Shipping regular bikes wasn’t an option, on their search they found bamboo bicycle frames handmade in Kampala Uganda. All they need to ship is the wheels. 26 frames for 26 avid cyclists 8 Americans, 3 Dutch and 12 African riders. The trail he has mapped explicitly breaks to meet these children at the care points, Kampala, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. Riding half way around the great Lake Victoria, part dirt, part road, riding through pineapple fields and even crossing the equator! We wish Brad well in this journey. More-A-Roo When Book Author, Baylife Style Editor and Entrepreneur Kristy Kurjan published Nap-A-Roo, her very first children’s board book. When I'd meet someone new at school, I’d say, I’m an artist”, and they would say, Oh, I know who you are, I’ve seen your artwork hanging in the hallway”” recalls Derek. You don't have to love fish to appreciate Derek's distinctive style. A DeYoung painting stuns and wows all on its own merit.So, after years of living in the fly fishing mecca of Montana, Derek, with his wife and partner in crime, Janell, have come back home to Michigan. Just like their fish, they were lured up north, setting up a permanent camp on the shore of Old Mission Peninsula. With paintbrush in hand, Derek is ready to rock everyone’s world.

Trout fish and fly fishing has never been so flamboyant, lively or so darn cool. Why paint fish you may ask? “I was raised on the shores of a small bayou off the Grand River, in West Michigan. We fished constantly. Being a good fisherman in our family was important. So when I got my sketch pads out, I couldn’t help but draw the fish that I imagined were living deep under the thick mats of weeds out in front of our house.” Recalls Derek. 38

Derek wasn't an overnight sensation; it took a lot of commitment to get this far. Derek describes his family as overachievers academically; he is the youngest child in a family of three boys. But his ability to draw and paint always kept his mom from worrying about him too much. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the 5th grade, I entered a youth wildlife art competition, with a painting of a large mouth bass with a frog hanging out of his mouth. His dad, Gordy was his greatest fan and encouraged him through thick and thin. He was the voice of reason when Derek, almost through Art School, found he doubted himself that he could make it a real career. He called his dad reconsidering his degree, his father's words of ultimate wisdom were, "You've known that you were going to be an artist since you were a little kid, Derek, this is all you've ever wanted. Now is the time to take a chance on making that dream come true. You've got your whole life to take whatever job you need to and take care of all your responsibilities. you will always wonder what if for the rest of your life." These words lifted the weight of the world off Derek's shoulders, and he's never looked back. Attending Kendal College of Art and Design also dramatically changed his life in another direction. He met Janell, the love of his life, as a fellow student. He reeled her in while she admired his work. In original fishing style, he fell hook, line, and sinker and they married shortly after. They make an amazing and talented team, it’s grueling for a husband and wife to work together cohesively, but they have it mastered. “We are complete opposites, I am an A personality, and Derek is so laid back.

When he is working, he is in his creative space, and he requires a total block. I am not allowed to bother him for anything," laughs Janell. Many gifted artists are living the very epitome of a starving artist. Luckily, early on Derek discovered his niche, his extraordinary power, combining his passion for painting and fly fishing. He then shrewdly recognized to follow where it led. After beginning in the local juried art shows, he understood his clients were in the fly fishing world. It was expensive and humbling, but he committed to making it happen, traveling to the biggest show in Denver Colorado. It opened doors he could have never imagined. “Magazine publishers, owners of famous fly fishing companies, and other top level executives. People seemed genuinely interested in my unique way of portraying fish and fly fishing. My work was voted “Best of What’s New in Fly Fishing,” recalls Derek. His genius and raw ability to bring breathtaking life to the superior fish that men fantasize of catching was slowly becoming epic. MAY/JUNE 2017 BAY LIFE NORTH

With the dedication to his craft, of painting and fly fishing, Derek and wife Janell made the wise decision to leave Michigan and follow the fish to Montana. But Michigan’s draw was beckoning them home, “who doesn’t want to live up north,” says Janell. They began their search and found a place that was against everything on their list. But they fell in love with it anyway. A 1948 cottage with an old grown forest, with 100 feet of beach on West Bay. “it was so rustic like a Boy Scout camp and had such a cool vibe, it just spoke to us," recalls Janell. They ended up getting into a bidding war with a couple who they knew were just going to tear it down and build a big custom home. The funny twist was that Derek's dad in Grand Haven was sharing the story with his cousin. Come to find out the cousin knew the owners of the cottage. Derek wrote a letter promising that if they got the winning bid, they would take loving care of the cottage, leaving it intact, with minor updates. Everything happens for a reason, and they got the house. The couple is now excited to integrate into the community of Traverse City. From Beach to Bath, planning a traffic pattern for guests enjoying the waterfront into your home is an important part of design in Northern Michigan. These rooms are often not on the main floor of the home but are vital in keeping sand from traveling in and across surfaces that may not withstand its gritty nature. Labeled on the Architectural Print as Beach Entrance, Lake Room or Beach Bath, this is the room designated for people using the outdoors to enter the house. Typically, there is a spot to change clothing and perhaps shower off, a station to drop beach clothes and towels for laundering or for using the facilities throughout the day. In the past few years, many of my clients have designed the door from the outside into a fully tiled room that has a bench with cubbies and shelving. This area is meant to store a change of clothes as well as beach towels 52

and baskets for outdoor needs (i.e. suntan lotion, bug spray, etc.). The next room this one opens into is a well-utilized bathroom space with a water closet, vanity, and shower. Many residents are also incorporating a washer/dryer and hamper/sorting station to handle the used towels and wet clothing. This approach keeps the bathing suits, towels, sandals, and such in an area set up to handle sand and damp clothing. Guiding your family and guests to enter through this space will save the wood flooring or carpet you may have installed in other rooms of the home. It also encourages wet bottoms only to sit on the outdoor furniture and not

the pieces with more delicate fabrics and finishes used inside. When selecting materials for this room, have some fun. Use pebbles for the floor, teak for the bench and perhaps some fun hooks for towels. Select materials that are water and scratch resistant, such as tile, stone countertops and cabinets floating above the floor. So, enjoy the beach and water knowing you have just the right room to define how far it is welcome into your home.

hat is it that Realtors always tell you? Location, Location. How about finding your perfect diamond in the rough cottage that overlooks glistening West Bay, that includes a bonus sandy toes beach house. Score! It's a fixer-upper, but your dad's a part time builder. Then your brother sets you up on a blind date who turns out to be the man of your dreams. Who also these days, just happens to co- own four of the hottest Tap Bars in Michigan. Welcome to Heather Gillow and Jim Smolak’s busy, but super awesome world. Not many people we write about are Traverse City Natives, but Heather can boast this claim to fame. She left to pursue her business degree at The University of Michigan and just as many young people who grew up here feel; she needed to spread her wings. “I’ll be honest back then I was so excited to see other cities” recalls Heather. She spent the next 15 years working in Chicago and Ann Arbor, but she always knew she’d return. Jim is originally from Detroit, and was no stranger to Traverse City, often visiting for family vacations, golf outings, or just to get away. How they met could be called kismet. As luck would have it Heather’s brother was a friend of Jim’s from Western Michigan College. Playing cupid, he set-up the two on a blind MAY/JUNE 2017 BAY LIFE NORTH

date. The sparks were flying at The Boathouse restaurant that night. Years later, with the pick of all Traverse City’s finest establishments, it’s still their preferred place for a special date night. 56

maybe he’d be interested. Jim had never been in the restaurant business before, so naturally, his response was "Why would I do that." After some coaxing and encouragement from Heather Jim agreed to meet with Matt. “That was really all I brought to the table, someone who enjoyed being around the bar scene” laughs Jim. After going on blind date of their own, Jim and Matt Cozzens formed a business partnership and started 7 Monks Taproom. To Heather's delight, Jim moved up to Traverse City a few short months later. "It was an easy move" jokes Jim. The house has been a labor of love, keeping Home Depot in business. “Rather than trying to do everything at once we slowly worked on it year over year," says Heather. Three years ago, they moved out for six months to finally make it their own. They pretty much gutted the interior, adding about 400 square feet to expand the kitchen. They also added a stunning entrance way, and a full-size bar, "My favorite improvement" laughs Jim. A self-proclaimed Mixologist Jim is striving to plan the perfect cocktail party. Heather's favorite improvements are a tie between the Kitchen and entry way. "It used to be people would enter the house and be right in the Dining room, so I really love having an entry way" laughs Heather. They added a spare guest bath and turned the existing bathroom into the master bath and added a walk in closet in the master.” We modernized the home and made it less choppy and more open.” Says Heather. For the sleek polished finale, they brought in a professional, local Interior Designer Kristen Lutz. “She is great to work with. She is an excellent collaborator and helps fit with your style. She pushed me in some directions that were out of my comfort zone that I ended up loving. She always said her goal is to help me not make mistakes. She is always honest, and I love that approach.” Recalls Heather.

Their finished home is visually striking. It’s a contemporary chic design, but comfortable. “We designed the house to really support having family and friend gatherings. We both grew up in traditional families. Both of our parents are still together and are high school sweethearts. The deck was designed to support entertaining, so we hosted parties over the years ranging from birthdays, 4th of July parties, rehearsal dinner, girls night, holiday parties, girls night to just enjoying dinner on the patio!" says Heather. With their crazy busy work schedules, Heather who travels a lot for work and Jim who just opened their third Seven Monks location in Grand Rapids, don't get to spend a lot of time at their home. So, when they do finally get home, it is truly their Sanctuary. They are living the northern dream, waking up overlooking the glistening crystal blue West Bay. "Being from Detroit and Southeast Michigan this is where we wanted to be in the Summer and in the Winter, to call this home I feel really fortunate," says Jim. “In the last six years, Jim has opened 4 bars with his copartner, and we remodeled the house, so we are looking forward to slowing down and sharing our home and space more this summer with friends and family and enjoying where we live!” laughs Heather. When the stars do align and their busy schedules can find the time for each other, inside their dazzling Kitchen is where you'll find them. They love to cook, and it's time together they cherish. So, they dedicate every Sunday for a cooking adventure, concocting a bold, exciting new dish. Paired with a bottle or two from their fantastic wine rack, no doubt? Heather and Jim have found their little slice of heaven. The startling transformation was a lot of hard work, patience, and perseverance. It didn't come easy, as nothing worth having ever does. But now they can finally sit back and relax. What is they say? The Sun and The Sand and Drink in My Hand. Cheers.
