A

s I type this, winter just showed up again. Really?

I don’t mean to grumble, I swear I have learned to embrace the snow, but the recent signs of early spring had me super excited. I was even glad to see potholes; it’s a good indication we’re close at least. My family just wrapped up the grueling ski race season, that demands six weeks of schlepping, here, there and everywhere. I gleefully just packed it all away. Goodbye, hand warmers, skis, ginormous bags, snowsuits, thermals, and boots galore. It was a premature spring wish, I could finally see the floor in my mudroom, and I did the Happy Dance. We spring forward at the end of this week for goodness sakes!

But, I need to find the good. So, as I watch the snowflakes fall, I am gazing out over the hustle and bustle of East Front St., right outside our new Baylife office windows. Woot Woot. These energizing windows to the world of Traverse City include a coveted West Bay view, just as long as the bare trees across the street never bloom. Doubtful, but I’m holding out hope.

All about the water view leads us into the pages of this issue. Now, and what will come. We are thrilled to bring you the gift of an early spring thaw, partnering with our dear friend Jim Anderson. He used a clear day in early February as a good excuse to hop into his Cessna plane and capture natures wintry blanket from the air. The cold tundra is rare from this unique perspective, frozen lakes created solely by bitter cold and wind. Thick layers of glazed ice splattered with cracks. In our pages, we combined these frosty bleak outlooks with their stunning summer counterparts. The tropical turquoise and sparkling blues, the contrasts are simply spectacular.

Envisioning warmer days always includes dining al fresco, and Mike Connors, the king of hospitality, invites you into his waterfront domain on the Westside, at the West Side Tavern. Mike, the successful owner of Apache Trout Grill, is no stranger to crafting a one of a kind experience for his guests. With the West End Tavern overlooking Harbor West Marina, he went overboard. He spared no expense in

constructing a dynamite deck for patrons to dine in style taking in the pristine view.

Inside, the oversized booths and the lively bar are ready for fun. No small detail was overlooked, down to the Cherrywood smoked fired grill and big brick oven.

Just about anything on a grill tastes amazing, enhanced by company and surroundings. How about by the lake, on a star-filled summer night? That would be a classic up north summer memory. The water is my family’s happy place, but first, it has to thaw and warm the heck up. In reality, it’s going to be a while, a long while.

Spring break always eases us in slowly, yep, we have hibernated for months, with layers upon layers of thermals, sweaters, leggings, hats, and boots. We break out of a winter cocoon unveiling our pasty bodies, and we torture them, throwing them into a scorching Caribbean climate with wild abandon. We shock our poor systems, going from 30 degrees to 80 degrees in 3 hours Flat. We’ve been sun-deprived, and we jump into summer headfirst with no filter. We bake, we bask, we lounge, and we indulge. For the love of all that’s holy! Please wear a hat and lots and lots of sunscreen. In your beach bag don’t forget to take us along too, for your Spring Break, ‘Wish You Were Here,’ pics. We will print as many as we can in the next issue. We want your smiling faces, with Baylife Magazine, along for the ride.

After the gray days of winter, one sunny day is like a lifetime of therapy. But If you can’t find the sunshine, be the sunshine.

Big AHA! The Great Lakes Children’s Museum held their yearly AHA Gala at the top of Centre Point, February 24th. It was a dazzling event with guests dressed to impress.

They enjoyed donated local wine and beer, topped off with delicious appetizers and dinner. They were treated to magical entertainment by TC based Ben Whiting, who wowed the crowd with mind-blowing tricks and his quick wit. We are very attuned to the more casual, sporty lifestyle of Traverse City – that being said, we love having the opportunity to curate a world- class mix of fashion, accessories, and home décor here in our hometown.

In your high fashion lives, what famous people have you met?

T: From Yo-Yo Ma to Streisand, Celine, and Beyonce; Colin Powell, President Clinton, Secretary of State Clinton, Rudolph Guliani, Oscar de la Renta, Paloma Picasso, Karl Lagerfeld, Donna Karan, Carolina Herrera, Victoria Beckham, Elizabeth Taylor, Blake Lively, Bebe Neuwirth, John Lithgow, Gail King, Hoda Kotb, and Leslie Stahl – to name a few!

A: I regularly worked with celebrities for movie premiers, Broadway debuts, and other special events. I had an amazing rapport with Christie Brinkley over many years. The first time I took clothes to her home, I was fascinated to see the original canvas that she painted for the cover of then-husband Billy Joel’s album ‘River of Dreams.’

In only one word, or two? What most describes your styles?

T: Classic with the unexpected – and I’m not afraid of color!

A: Minimalist with a twist – that could describe my taste in cocktails too!

In the world of glamour and style, are there any words of wisdom or quotes you live by?

T: ”Fashion is fun; style is enduring.” I also like the quote, “I could be right, or I can be happy.”

A: I always have to follow my heart and dreams. I also do not judge people by what they wear – which happens a lot in the fashion industry. One of my best clients couldn’t afford a new pair of socks the first time we met.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself we would never guess?

T: I was a roughneck on a drilling rig in Weatherford, Texas.

A: I grew up studying music and art. I played piano and saxophone.

What is the best compliment you have ever received?

T: Recently, a new client that lives at Cordia shopped with us. She had relocated from NYC to TC in the past year – after her experience, she said to me “I feel like I’m back in New York.”

A: I’ve been in the service industry for as long as I can remember. For me, seeing that a client is happy is the best compliment for me.

Who is your hero?

T: My dad. He never stopped wanting the best for his family and Traverse City. He was a really good man in my book.

A: For me, a hero is someone who inspires me. I think the artist Mark Rothko created an extraordinary body of work. His paintings can lift your senses and transport you to a spiritual place.

The Irish are Coming The Irish Boat Shop that is, already fully established in Harbor Springs and Charlevoix, they are jumping into the Traverse City area with a Splash.

The Irish Boat Shop specializes in getting people out on the water. “We are thrilled to have found a waterfront location after years of trying,” Michael Esposito, the President of Irish Boat Shop, tells us. The building, on East Bay, is getting a much-needed makeover, after years of sitting empty.

We are lucky to live by the water, but it comes with the big responsibility of water safety. We need places to teach these vital swimming skills to our kids. For decades, the only place was The Easling Pool inside the Civic Center, which opened in 1970 named in honor of community leader Paul Easling.

Now It desperately needs an infrastructure update. It doesn’t come cheap to save and renovate this institution. The Friends of Easling Pool Group, a local citizen-driven non-profit organization, have already raised $500,000. But are still $125,000 away from their goal. The Beautiful Vermentino You can tell in Northern Michigan when Spring is just around the corner. The sun shines a bit more, the streets are full of potholes, and everyone seems to smile a bit more. Spring also brings with it the change of palate-pleasing wines from Heartier styled wines to those just a bit lighter and brighter. One of my rekindled favorites is Vermentino. This grape is most widely known coming from Italy in such regions as Sardinia, Corsica, and Piedmont (known as Favorita). Italy is not alone in growth this tasty grape; it can also be found coming from Provence and Nice France known as Rolle.

Vermentino is a beautiful, light bodied wine with some similarities to Sauvignon Blanc. Mostly coming from vineyards close to the sea, the grapes tend to get engulfed in the salty air leaving some briny character on the palate. Vermentino will offer up lively aromas of pear, white peach, lime and pink grapefruit with subtle notes of flinty stone and citrus zest. Two of my favorites are the are the Le Saint Andre from Provence and the Sella & Mosca from Sardinia.

Enjoy each of these delicious wines with seafood, cheeses and light meat dishes.

W

hen Mike Connors announced he was opening a new restaurant in the old Harbor 22 location overlooking Harbor West Marina, expectations were high.

As the accomplished owner of Apache Trout Grill in Traverse City, he has set the gold standard. Apache is a revered place to relish an excellent meal, served up with spectacular customer service, all overlooking the startling view of the glistening crystal blue Grand Traverse Bay. No pressure here, Mike is a pro, and he was up for the challenge. “It was October of 2015, I had heard the place would be for sale, but it hadn’t listed yet,” Mike recalls. “My wife Sheila and I, along with two other managers went for lunch. I instantly knew it would make a great investment. I made an offer and said I needed an answer by 5 pm that day. In four hours I had bought a new restaurant,” he smiles.

“I have opened seven restaurants, and I wanted to do another with a wood-fired grill and a brick oven. I wanted to create a gathering place, to take care of the locals, where they go to catch up. Plus, we had a built-in natural community of 450 boat slips right below. The deck had been underutilized, so we got to work with and put a plan together.” Mike tells us. And so began the story of the West End Tavern.

It was a complete overhaul and rebuild that took time, but the fruits of their labor shine brightly. West End Tavern boasts a stately fireplace room that can seat private parties of up to 35 people. Shockingly, they don’t even charge for the coveted space you just have to guarantee that you can fill it. Outside, the deck overlooking the affluent West Bay is unrecognizable from its former old self. The impressively extended seating and added outside bar make it an essential place to party when the warmer temps begin. Plan to kick off the season with top-shelf margaritas and small plates with a few besties.

The one unforeseen decision he made was opening up the kitchen, allowing patrons a peek behind the curtain. It’s a daring and courageous move. “We wanted energy in the kitchen. It’s a show, and the cooks and chefs get instant gratification. You can sit right by the brick oven bar and watch the action,” says Mike.

Mike has taken a huge risk that is paying off, with hiring a young fresh team. At the helm, Brittnay Fritz is the energetic, hard-

working general manager, “He is the best boss I have ever had,” she says. “She also understands the power of social media,” says Mike. “I am so proud of our chef, he has a true talent, and he has full liberty. It’s an adventure to let the young kids take the reins. I know I can still stick my nose in if I need to, in forty years I have seen every problem,” laughs Mike.

And we got to see up-close the industrial-sized rotisserie. Mike’s dedication to succeed is mind-blowing. Everything is first class and top notch. The area for his employees in the back is just as large as it is for his guests in

the front. Mike is quite simply the ultimate King of Hospitality. “I love the restaurant business. Over the years there are so many kids that we have mentored as bussers and wait staff. It keeps me young. We have touched hundreds of lives, and I love when they revisit with their own families as parents. We live in a very special place.”

Today’s professionals don’t often put on a business suit to go to work, but they still need a functional space to improve their productivity.

With the emergence of mobile technology, many people are now managing their careers from home. This evolution is causing a change in home design. Gone are the days of a desk in the kitchen or a formal den with a “no entry” feel. What has entered instead, are often bright welcoming rooms that can inspire us to “go to work” daily.

The Northern Michigan attitude also 48

The most common approach to a home office is having a desk so that you may be facing either outside or the entrance to the room, with an additional work space behind for setting a printer, storing files and fanning out paperwork. These areas will flow in style with the rest of the home, but we may add some special spaces for art or family pictures or displaying professional certifications and awards. This is often achieved through the use of built in bookshelves, file drawers and office type storage.

Considerations are made if you might conduct meetings in

this space to offer a spot for attendees to sit in a comfortable chair, have a table to set a beverage on and conduct business in a more “casual, comfortable” environment.

Even if we aren’t running a career from home, we still need a spot to file away important documents, keep records, store a printer and such. As a designer, I am happy this space is no longer in the kitchen as often it would become the drop zone and become filled with so much clutter that working there became impossible. What often is requested is still a set of file drawers, a spot for a printer and a space to simply organize your family’s school and daily schedules.

Katie Hall, who recently moved their family to Austin, TX. It turns out they would be homeless when they visit in the summer, so it was a perfect scenario.

The cottage is airy, bright and breezy.

The inviting space is comprised of walls wrapped in white shiplap paneling. In contrast, are reclaimed barn wood beams, cosmetically placed around structural beams. Old meets new, repurposed and reused it creates a cozy farmhouse ambiance.

“The cottage is more girlie, and the lodge is more for the guys,” laughs Tricia.

Up the stairs to the loft, each house has a special children’s play area. “We had Jeff at Sweet Pea (a downtown TC kids store), help us with that,” laughs Tricia. Facing opposite are three kid-friendly twin size beds, all in a row, reminiscent of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. This one is too hard, this one is too soft, but this one is just right! You can easily imagine close cousins jumping on, and claiming their turf.

With all the creature comforts of home pre-planned for you, the only thing left to ponder is food and drink. Even here Tricia can expertly guide you; she created a book full of tried and tested favorite restaurants and not to be missed great eats in the surrounding area.

Old Fashioned

by Brad Reed Lately, I have been looking at a lot of really old black and white photographs of my great grandparents and other ancestors. I often imagine what their world was like living in Michigan in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. For some reason, I always imagine that world in black and white. When I was making this image today on Old Mission Peninsula near Traverse City, I realized that many of my ancestors may have seen Michigan scenes that were this colorful and beautiful, they just didn’t have a great way to capture that moment in time to share forever.
