L

ately I have been thinking a lot about goal setting, it all comes hand in hand with the New Year and all that. It’s also because my son Zach now works with the magazine, and he is relatively new to the sales world.

It’s my job as his boss and his mom to bring out the best in him, and kick his butt in gear too! My sales career started in 1989, yikes, please don’t do the math! I worked at the same company for over twenty years and loved my job.

Recently I’ve found all these little nuggets of sales wisdom keep popping out of my mouth, I’m like a little selling Yoda, but they actually make a lot of sense. Go figure, I guess if you put good stuff in, good stuff really does come out, just like they say it does. It’s an accumulation of a zillion sales/ motivation seminars I have attended over the last twenty something years. One of the best ones that always had an impact was from John Paul DeJoria, owner of Paul Mitchell.

He would always talk about the definition of insanity; doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Always do what you’ve always done, and you’ll always get what you’ve always got. These words of wisdom don’t just apply to sales but anything in life. They give you encouragement to realize if you want something, anything, you have to change your thinking. You have to change how you have always done something in the past, make a new plan, and put it into action with passion.

Tony Robbins seminars taught me to always live life with passion, but also that people don’t really change their behavior, until the current one has caused them enough Pain to finally change their ways. Pain is the ultimate motivator, not pleasure, like those skinny jeans that don’t fit, an eye opening health scare, or even a divorce. You don’t have to get to that point; he had a Charles Dickens theory that made you just have to think the worst painful outcome, way ahead in the future, but change it today just like Scrooge did in the Christmas Carol. It really works.

Anything that’s really worth having does take a lot of work be it relationships, friendships, parenting, health, fitness, education and success. Even happiness is something to work at. Looking at a glass half full, instead of half empty, and living a life with an attitude of gratitude.

So in our house this year we are working on setting goals, for business, health, fitness and just living a happy fulfilled life. Even Teaghan has big goals that she is excited to achieve on the Mt. Holiday Ski Race Team. My goal is to get through winter, get bikini ready for Spring break, and workout with no excuses. For inspiration I will revisit Jala Wharton’s Feeling Good page. Every day if I need to!

Our magazine’s pages are full of people that went out of their comfort zone, for something worthwhile. John Cueter is our mover and shaker; he moved his family here for his position at Fox Motors. Graeme Leask moved here from Scotland as a young man for a job. Never leaving, Graeme eventually brought a little bit of his home to us when he bought the Little Traverse Inn. Nancy Duke bought her Sixth St. Victorian home sight unseen, assembled a dream team of experts, and took eleven months living out of a suitcase to remodel the house just the way she envisioned it. For photographers their ultimate goal is to be published.

Todd and Brad Reed have published a number of books and we are honored to have their coveted work in our magazine.

10 Questions with John Cueter You are the face of Fox Motors, what do you love most about that big responsibility?

Making sure our team is living up to the image that we are promising to our customers. We are making a promise that we will give them a remarkable experience when they become a part of the Fox Family.

That is something we truly believe is the heart and soul of our business, which is to exceed the expectations of every customer and keep them coming back again and again.

The position moved you up here in 2009 from downstate. What does your families favorite Northern Michigan Day include?

Skiing, beaches, hiking, other outdoor activities. Sometimes it is just curling up on the couch as a family and watching a good movie with a huge bowl of popcorn.

You and your wife Mary have four beautiful kids, on a rare date night, where is your go- to hotspot?

There are a ton of great hotspots we enjoy, but Mary and I love the food and the ambiance at Stella’s the most for a date night.

Tell us something, that would surprise us about you?

I wear the old fashioned white tube socks to bed every night.

Any words of wisdom that you live by?

Personally- Life is all about what you give not what you can take.

Being a good, hard-working, honest person and being kind to others is the most important attributes we can carry every day. Lastly, and probably most important- Always stay humble. ProfessionallySelling cars is just a by-product of what I do. It is the people in the business that drives me every day. I like to help customers and make sure we exceed their expectations. I also like to help our team members develop and assist them to grow in their careers as well as life in general. That is what drives me the most every day, not the cars themselves. If we do all of the people things right we will sell enough cars, without a doubt.

Outside of work and family, what is your passion?

Sorry to admit, but not much. Those two things account for 95% of my passion. My faith, some sports on a Sunday afternoon, and an occasional cigar with friends are the other 5%.

When you were a kid, what did you want to grow up to be?

Exactly what I am doing now. I used to wear a clip-on tie and go to our family automobile dealership with my dad at 8 years old. I have been in this business ever since.

Who is your hero?

Life’s an adventure, take risks

Step Up We live in such a beautiful place, with such kind and generous people, that it’s easy to forget that not everyone living here is as fortunate as most of us. Challenges are a part of life, some big, some small but each one is important. Local Mom Cathy O’Connor, saw these challenges facing our youth and decided to tackle them head on. She founded a charity called Step Up Northern Michigan with one goal in mind, helping the atrisk youth of Northern Michigan. “For me, helping others right in our own community is important. Completing high school and entering the work force or college is a huge challenge when you are battling poverty. I want these kids to know that someone cares about them and the challenges they face.” says Cathy O’Connor, President of Step Up Northern Michigan

Moving on Up Moving is never easy, the countless boxes, packing and unpacking is enough to stress out even the calmest of us.

Luckily for Red Dresser’s owner, Tammy Simerson, they know their doing it for the last time. As they settle into their snug forever home, smiles are aplenty.

Their new location at 956 W. South Airport Rd. might seem like a small move, just down the street from their former location, but in truth it couldn’t be bigger. I’m sure you can relate that finding the perfect home is never an easy task but the feeling once you’ve found it is indescribable. For years, the Red Dresser has been a sparkling gem in the community, offering a vibrant vintage collection unlike any you’ll find. With over 55 local venders represented in the shop, as well as numerous local artisans, there is always a one of a kind find waiting to be plucked.

Changing Lives with Limbs For Life Todd Stone, C.P.O., C.O.O. Teter Orthotics and Prosthetics

“I have been very fortunate in life, so I owe something to give back and help those in need,” says practitioner Todd Stone. Todd does a lot more than just help; he literally gives an arm and a leg to underprivileged people that have been surviving without these vital limbs. Limbs are something most of us have and take for granted.

Legs and arms are something that we constantly The Dream Team use in our everyday life, and would be devastated Todd, Ryan and Anna to live without, that’s why Todd’s organization is aptly named, Limbs for Life.

For the last six years Todd has been visiting the Dominican Republic once a year, and the gifts he brings are life changing. “Some of these people have lived without a limb for 15-18 years, everything is free of charge and they are so appreciative,” smiles Todd.

How does the word get out in these tiny towns with no cell phones?

Facebook! A local social worker is credited with spreading the word to each town’s community calendar of this momentous event every year.

On the yearly trip, Todd and his team measure and fit as many prosthetics as they are able. Giving legs and arms to people who have lost them mainly in car and motorcycle accidents, and sometimes machete fights. Todd is a real life MacGyver when he needs to be, pulling together odd parts, used prosthetics, even reconfiguring lefts to work on rights and vice versa, so nothing ever goes to waste. He not only gives these life altering prosthetics but makes a point in adjusting and repairing existing ones to make sure his generous gifts keep on giving.

On these unforgettable trips his team makes every effort to make a perfect fit to change people’s lives forever.

In the process they have become great friends with the families they have helped over the years. “Every year I swear I will learn Spanish,” laughs Todd but, they always hire an interpreter. They do ride around like the locals though, on motorcycles on the dirt roads and even through the jungles! It’s remarkable for Todd and his team to invest so much time, money, and expertise to help these people live better lives. We are thrilled to shine a light on our neighbors, ordinary people doing extraordinary good deeds.

Add milk, cream, potatoes, spices and parmesan. Heat until sauce has thickened. Check for seasoning and proper thickness. Add more roux if needed.

Place filling in a boat dish. Cut out a puff pastry dough lid to fit the top of the dish. Brush with egg wash and bake at 350 degrees for 12-14 minutes or until pastry is golden brown and filling bubbles.

Jala has inspired us with her dedication to fitness; with her running tips and her manic stand up paddle boarding routines. If you’re only a fair weather exerciser what do you do in the cold winter months? Just like Jala, you can head on over to The Warehouse Market and the Modus Studio to get Spring Break Bikini ready!

Tell us, what exactly is Modus? Its strength and wellness without dread or exhaustion; Basically 60 minutes of incredible, efficient, effective and sustainable exercise. Focusing on an amazing sequence of signature moves that help you redefine your body and strengthen you all over. It was created locally by Megan Madion, and over the years she has designed new classes to keep it fresh and challenging.

How did you get into it? My friend Lindsey Hale and I were looking for a new workout. We kept hearing about Modus45 so we thought we give it a try. To this day we still laugh about how sore we were after our first class. I considered myself strong from my running/ paddle-boarding/yoga and weight training but this class is like nothing else I had ever experienced. Instantly I was hooked!

Why does it work for you? It's effective! My body has never been in better shape in my entire life. It's a lot of body awareness, so during class, you can't think about any of the everyday stresses you may have, or your list of to do's. You're in the moment.

It's your time for you, which I strongly believe everyone in today's society needs. For me it’s the perfect way to disconnect, meditating and clearing my head. Plus I always feel so good after I'm done; all of the instructors are extremely inspiring and unique in their own ways. I adore all of them.

You are also a Modus45 Instructor? Yes, I've been teaching Modus45 since Nov 2015. I absolutely love being an instructor there. The clients that have been coming for years to all the newbies 22

inspire me daily! The hard work, dedication and drive they all have to be healthy is incredibly infectious. I'm grateful to be a part of the Modus45 team.

Any Tips for Modus45 Beginners? Listen to your body. The first 15 minutes you're warming up. Take a rest or shake it out, and get back in when you’re ready. No one will be judging you; we've all experienced our first class. Everyone is extremely supportive of one another.

On a cold winter day, what is your favorite quote to motivate you?

Find you’re strong - What seems hard now will one day be your warm up.... (I also keep my favorite bikini close by to remind me to get up and get moving) Consistency is key for your hard work paying off.

Inside you are warmly welcomed with a cheery hello from Graeme and thee unmistakable buzz in the air is contagious; it brings an instant smile to all who enter. There is toe tapping music, laughter, lively conversation and an atmosphere that’s pure electric.

To the right sits the quaint bustling bar. No one is a stranger here, pints are poured and spirits are high.

Come for a pint, beer lovers will rejoice, with beers in all shades; dark, pale, amber, stout and IPA’s a-plenty.

If you’re not a big drinker come for the pub grub.

All around the original 1890 building that houses the bar; sit’s an addition that seats well over twenty tables that can house small or large groups, yet still maintains a cozy family friendly presence. Fun, frolic and friendship is rampant and big belly laughs spill out to almost every corner. It’s a long lost friends and family reunion all in one.

Whether it’s a pint, the great grub or you’re indulging in both, all are served up with a smile.

You have been transcended across the pond, to a world of of God Save the Queen and Braveheart.

It’s England and Scotland combined, creating a menu highlighting the British Isles to authentic perfection; from renowned Fish and Chips to a traditional Scottish Egg, and Haggis, with England’s bestselling dish, Indian fare - Chicken Tikka Marsala. The in-betweens are beloved established dishes too, with Toad in the Hole, Shepherd’s Pie and a little Beef Wellington. Now the English aren’t known too much for the finest of dining, these are the meat and potatoes of the farmers of the land.

They are old country fare, oldies but goodies and you should give them a try. The menu doesn’t judge you if you’re an American just wanting the perfect prime cut tenderloin or a mouthwatering half pound burger, served with their famous fries, of course!

The entrees are even served with a little something extra, their very own take on a yummy wedge salad to tickle your palette. It’s crisp and fresh complimenting your pint, wine or any other

“I wanted to incorporate my love for cooking and entertaining. I’m a home cook with no formal training but I’ve been cooking English food since I was seventeen,” libation you partake in. Sit a while, don’t rush and take it all in, the ambiance is truly mesmerizing.

The Inn has a long history dating back to 1890, as a part of the federal land grant; it was owned by the Atkinson family until the 1950’s. The great great great granddaughter lives two doors down and still has the original land grant signed by Abraham Lincoln.

Graeme has a long history too, coming over to the United States in 1988 with a Yorkshire textile mill contract, making furniture in North Carolina. Along the way he ended up in Grand Rapids, “I vacationed in Traverse City and went on to rent a house on every lake, I went from a fudgie to a perma-fudgie,” laughs Graeme. I received a phone-call from a friend, fellow European transplant Guillaume HazaëlMassieux owner of La Becasse and Bistro Fou Fou. “I have found the perfect place for you,” recalls Graeme. For over twenty five years it was the Leelanau Country Inn, and something else in-between. Guillaume was right; it was the ideal inn, a bed and breakfast with an eatery.

“I wanted to incorporate my love for cooking and entertaining. I’m a home cook with no formal training but I’ve been cooking English food since I was seventeen,” says Graeme. Along with his two daughters Graeme has been welcoming in locals and visitors alike ever since.

As we tried to blend in on a busy Thursday night full of gaiety and merriment, it was a little hard to stay on the low down; we were taking twenty minute long photo shoots of our delicious dishes. A bartender named Nicole rushed over to us, “I just wanted to say Graeme puts his heart and soul into this, 28

and it’s a pleasure to work for him. Everyone here knows each other. The community is so fortunate; we welcome anyone in with open arms.” Then she popped off back to the bar. What a great compliment, I wonder how much he paid her to say that? Just kidding!

As we delved into our plates, now thoroughly well documented on film, Graeme sat down with his half pound burger, to join us. He looked over at my dish, Chicken Tikka Marsala, “You know, I’ve only been cooking that for 30 years,” he laughs. He goes on to tell me how he was a teenage dishwasher and Muhammed Cashmere taught him how to cook Indian food!

As you would expect Scottish culture reigns high too, and on January 28th, Graeme will host The Burns Supper. A celebration to Robby Burns, who is Scotland’s equivalent to Shakespeare, who knew? It’s a big deal, with an evening of traditional food, and lots of toasts, which means lots of drinking from the 34 single malts on the shelf! Graeme

also clued us in to the secret of long life from his 95 year old Scottish Grandmother.

“A chocolate biscuit every morning, and a wee dram every night,” laughs Graeme.

As we started to chat a little longer, he is pulled from his chair with a request for a song. The Scottish National Anthem, Flowers of Scotland. He was still belting out a wee tune as we begrudgingly had to leave and what do you know, we bumped into an old friend coming in, as we were heading out. It is indeed just like the pubs of England I grew up in. The J.R.R. Tolkien quote that Graeme choses to model his inn by, says “If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.” Cheers, I’ll drink to that.

As the temperatures continue to fall and winter settles in, in home entertaining is a great way to battle winter blues. At my home “Goodall Game Night” occurs once a month and is a fun, friendly and sometimes competitive evening filled with laughter and good cheer. With this type of entertaining in mind, Wet or Dry, a “bar” or secondary entertaining space remains popular in today’s home design.

The most popular components to the bar are a small under counter beverage center. Some people opt for a secondary wine cooler that’s temperature adjustments are specific to wine vs. beer or soda. And with the popularity of microbrew continuing to rise, Kegerators are making their way on the scene. Depending on its proximity to the kitchen, a sink may be added for rinsing glassware and for cleaning.

W

hen Nancy Duke bought her cherished Victorian home on Traverse City’s Sixth Street, she hadn’t stepped one foot inside of it. It would be a sight unseen deal, but for Nancy, that slight little detail was in no way a deal-breaker. “I was in Florida and had only seen the listing photos, but knew without a doubt I wanted to live here. My sister lives right up the street and I just love the beautiful old and historic homes,” says Nancy. Once she finally did step inside, the passionate cook’s first response to seeing the kitchen was, “oh no, this is way too small,” recalls Nancy. “That was kind of the impetus to the changes, one thing led to another and I made a lot of changes, but I love them all,” beams Nancy.

The elegant house is a traditional Victorian structure, built in 1880 that captures the timeless elegance of a by gone era.

With its original wood floors, stained glass windows and parlor entrance, it contained all the elements found in a classic age-old home. It had long been treasured by the Benner Family before her, for over forty years, so she was mindful of JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2017 BAY LIFE NORTH

the long established footprint in place. To pay homage to old world nostalgia and modern state of the art, Nancy assembled a team of experts to guide her. “I was excited to make it my own,” says Nancy. Also having a family background of three generations of builders didn’t hurt either, so a little remodeling didn’t phase her one bit. “It was a joy, I had a massive wonderful team, they were all just gems, and equally artists at heart,” recalls Nancy.

Nancy’s Dream Team included local architect Suzannah Tobin, master woodworker Peter V. Romeo, Painter Dennis Drake, Dennis Coburn and his team from Coburn Construction and Sandy Bargiel, owner of Bay Cabinetry.

“Everyone was amazing and went above and beyond,” says Nancy. This was a terrific team that brought their A-Game every day. Nancy’s entire labor of love took about eleven months, from beginning to end. For the long process she basically lived out of a suitcase, finally moving into her home sweet home just seventeen months ago 54

The finished home is simply striking, with a one-ofa-kind interior that just dazzles. “I want to have a big sign that says “welcome to my home,” laughs Nancy.

It all began with that kitchen; the new and improved version is the envy of any famed chef.

Housed in what was the old den, the state of the art kitchen is spectacular and the hub of many dinner parties that Nancy loves to host, firing up her beloved Wolfe oven.

Upstairs Nancy flipped the original master bedroom, her antique 1831 bed and matching dressers were purchased from her brother. “The 1831 era were too new for his house,” she laughs.

Through the door sits the master bathroom, Nancy’s place of sanctuary; the room is a breathtaking work of art, hand sketched by her awesome designer, Suzannah.

The heated floor is heavenly, made of superior Calcutta Marble, hand laid in an exceptional oriental pattern. The copper clawed tub is devilishly divine for long hot baths and the sink cabinet is a custom antique desk.

Hidden on the left is a huge walk-in tiled shower and gracing the wall is a truly superb authentic Venetian glass mirror circa 1920. The finishing touch above, hangs a royal chandelier.

She didn’t discriminate on just the interior either. On the exterior of the home she changed the siding from a creamy/beige to a sage green. “I kept the cream trim, but I added the lavender and purple,” says Nancy. On Victorian and Edwardian houses In American architecture, the vibrant colors are meant to embellish and enhance the homes architectural details. The loving term that is used for this all across the country is “Painted Ladies.”

Once Nancy had the basic shell of the home just right, her personal finishing touches are truly extraordinary and extremely eclectic.

The inviting colors on the outside are just a small prerequisite for the delightful dancing walls you experience within. On the surface, the walls look like merely pretty wallpaper, little did we know after asking Nancy it is actually vintage original art and it’s Epic.

Custom made by David E. Berman, at Trustworth Studio’s in Plymouth., Mass. The designs are historically preserved and include a famed English architect and designer named, Charles Voysey. The style is Art Nouveau, and so influential that a collection of his work is on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England.

The lively and whimsical walls provide the perfect backdrops of personality to coexist with Nancy’s prominent furniture like yin and yang. They create a spectacular contrast to the dramatic period furnishings that grace every room.

The bold rich dark wooden hues of mahogany, cherry and bird’s eye maple are all beautifully well preserved and proudly placed with a majestic flair.

One of her largest pieces dominates the mud room, a monumental wooden wardrobe that you could indeed climb inside to try find the land of Narnia.

Some furniture fit so tightly snug, closets and doors have only millimeters of room to spare.

All of these wonderfully magnificent pieces hold a nostalgic charm with stories to tell; Nancy has been an avid collector of finely crafted antiques for many years, and her home is a stunning showpiece. Believe it or not she was actually downsizing with this house, when she relocated from her Novi home.

Her esteemed collection is endless, she also schlepped up north, seventeen rugs, historic antique light fixtures, original art and a solid wood island bar. The most noteworthy piece came from her bedroom, an ornate wooden fireplace mantle, set on flawless marble; here it creates the most remarkable aristocratic ambience entering into the living room.

In all of these updates, and changes Nancy was still meticulous about keeping the old. The original hundred year old radiators at 800 lbs. were each removed, stripped and refinished, by metal worker Darren Fetter, to their once former glory in working order. In the process they found a treasure; an intact newspaper dated 1913! Nancy was also respectful to the forty year old memories made in the house by the former Benner family. On the wall that leads to the basement preserved with care are the Benner’s children’s height measurements. Nancy’s painters painted all around them leaving the long lost growth spurts of their now grown children untouched. “It is my house now, but I couldn’t paint over them, just in case,” laughs Nancy.

MT. HOLIDAY SKI RESORT

THEN: circa 1950's Mt Holiday began in 1949 as state-owned land. A group of local businessman obtained permission to construct a ski run. Wards of the state in the Prison Labor Program helped clear the way for generations to come. In 1985, it was purchased

by Warren and Sue Brosch. After Warren's death in 1999, Sue placed the area up for sale. With fear that the cherished Mountain would be developed and lost forever, a team of passionate volunteers formed the non-profit corporation Mt. Holiday Inc. to raise the funds to buy it. The hill holds treasured memories for thousands of families and still remains today a true non-profit organization. "
