On-campus housing means many current student services will need to be enhanced and extended including student activities, campus security, library and food services and new ones added.

The $23 million project is a public, private partnership with Florida State University, Zimmer Development Company and Asset Living.

FSU is leasing the property to Zimmer Development Company, and Asset Living will manage all aspects of leasing to students.

Asset Living is the largest third-party property management company in the nation for campus living with properties on 120 campuses across the nation.

“Despite the current challenges we are facing, this is an exciting time for FSU PC,” said Hanna. “We are growing and our students are excited about the possibilities.”

Students around campus are anxious to start applying for the new housing and are asking about all the unique opportunities that will accompany residential life.

“I’m going to be the first to apply for housing,” said Student Government Council Senator and Recreation, Tourism and Events Major, Mia Bennett. “I want to snag one of the bay view rooms.”

“We are really looking forward to a great partnership with Zimmer and Asset Living,” Hanna said. “This has been a process, and I am especially appreciative of the support from President John Thrasher, Provost Sally McRorie, Vice President Kyle Clark and their teams for the hard work over the past several years leading up to this point.”

Before construction could begin, the project had to be approved by the FSU Board of Trustees and the State University System Board of Governors as well as the FSU Office of General Counsel, the Mayor and City Commission of the City of Panama City, the Bay County Commission and the Bay County Property Appraiser.

or the last three years, Panama City has been the largest coastal city in Florida with no waterfront lodging.

However, that will change in 2022 with the opening of

a new hotel from The St. Joe Company in Panama City’s downtown waterfront district. The company and the city recently executed a land lease agreement on a portion of the marina, with preconstruction work on the project happening now, and plans to break ground in the second quarter of 2021.

The sprawling hotel promises to be a place for retreat and rejuvenation, offering the potential for weekend getaways for regional and local couples and families, as well as destination weddings. A public promenade along the water’s edge will become a destination for a stunning sunset stroll, while an adjacent restaurant will offer indoor and outdoor dining. Public boat docks and a paddleboard launch will encourage visitors to take advantage of St. Andrew Bay’s calm waters. An event lawn will offer a venue for families and friends to gather for a fun and casual afternoon or evening spent discovering the richness of Panama City’s arts and culture.

Throughout Bay County and all of Florida, there are strong workforce development partners who train individuals for different career paths. From skilled technical training schools to top universities, our institutions are training the needed workforce for companies. Specifically in Bay County, we have strong workforce partners from Florida State University-Panama City, Gulf Coast State College, Haney Technical Center, and others.

While FAME is designed to train individuals for the manufacturing sector, the program also has a formal component where students learn professional presence skills, overall manufacturing acumen, as well as formal technical capabilities. In addition to the technical capabilities, the program also teaches the necessary soft skills which are so vital to have success in a career. The starting cohort of students will be recruited throughout Spring 2021 and will begin the FAME program in Fall 2021.

Starting in 2008, the first FAME Chapter was established by Toyota in Kentucky to support their manufacturing operations. From there, chapters have grown to over thirty locations throughout the U.S. The FAME program is a collaboration with the existing industry in a community and the workforce partners within that community. The program recruits students that are in a transition period of their life and pairs them with a sponsoring company to complete a two year apprenticeship. During the program, students will receive classroom training two days per week and work at their sponsoring company three days per week.

The FAME program is a grassroots effort that is guided by the local industry of a community. For the Bay County FAME Chapter, founding companies include Trane, Berg Pipe, Merrick Industries, Eastern Shipbuilding, as well as several others. Over time, this program is designed to create a pipeline of broadly trained individuals who can transition to full-time employment upon graduation. The initial class of students will be focused on training to become advanced maintenance technicians within these operations.

Students in the FAME program can be recent high school graduates, transitioning military members, or individuals looking to move into a new career path. The FAME program is designed to give students hands-on experience while also providing

he unemployment rate for Bay County continues to steadily decline each month from the escalated rates we saw in March, indicative of a recovering economy and workforce. This is a positive sign for our region and the many businesses impacted by COVID-19. This is also representative of the numerous employment opportunities available for individuals in our area as many employers are looking to hire. In fact, data from August to September reports a 2.7 percent increase in job advertisements posted within our region.

Some individuals have had the opportunity to return to their original places of work as businesses move into Phase III at full capacity. Others are faced with different options, including transitioning into a different career field with similar skillset requirements, or gain training for something completely new.

If you are interested in exploring your options, I encourage you to utilize Employ Florida, a valuable online job search tool that is free to use. Employ Florida is a comprehensive state-sponsored job board with many tools for finding, not only a career, but training opportunities, labor market information, and yes, connections to thousands and thousands of jobs. While it may take some time to set up your Employ Florida profile, the world of resources it unlocks are well worth the investment. Finally, let me say the pandemic has caused anxiety about safety for both employees and business owners. It should be safe to return to work as long as CDC guidelines are being followed. If you are concerned about safety when returning to work, be sure to ask your prospective employer if they have safety protocols in place and if they are following CDC guidelines. If you are uncomfortable with the answers to these questions, factor that information into your selection process. Remember, a job interview is a two-way street where you and the employer are making an important decision. Returning to work during the pandemic can be challenging, but as long as we are all taking the necessary steps to protect ourselves and others, it should be a safe one.

Cardiovascular Institute Welcomes Dr. Timothy McShurley Interventional Cardiologist Dr. McShurley is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Interventional Cardiology and Cardiovascular Diseases as well as certified by the Certification Board of Nuclear Cardiology. Dr. McShurley received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles and his medical degree from the Ross University School of Medicine.

He continued his training at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Louisiana State University in New Orleans for his cardiovascular medicine fellowship, and then completed his interventional cardiology fellowship in 2016 at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Massachusetts. Dr. McShurley will be seeing patients with general cardiology needs as well those in need of coronary or peripheral intervention.

Dr. McShurley is originally from Northern California and began his career in San Luis Obispo, California. He has relocated to Panama City with his family and they are looking forward to enjoying everything our community has to offer.

Business Expansion Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center On June 29th, Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center opened their new freestanding Emergency Room on Hwy 231 to bring care closer to the residents of the northern part of Bay County and to provide them with an extended more convenient high level experience. Investing over eleven million dollars, Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center added 30 new full time jobs to Bay County.

Innovation JetBoatPilot When COVID-19 spread, JetBoatPilot made the adjustment from manufacturing boat parts for the marine industry to developing a product line of personal protection equipment.
