Baxter Digital Citizenship Expectations

Digital Copy

Baxter is a pioneer in digital platforms and we take pride in our leadership as a community to support safe, generative, productive use of digital technology and information literacy. In the larger context,Americans have the rights to freedom of expression; however, our school community also has a legal and ethical responsibility to uphold safety, forward academic progress, and even kindness. BaxterAcademy provides students with wireless and wired internet access in addition to Lenovo laptops with Microsoft Windows, Office 365, andAdobe Creative Cloud. This technology is available to students from September 2022 through June 2023. Please carefully read the digital citizenship expectations. Unacceptable use of technology may result in a revocation or suspension of privileges. There are 7 components of our digital citizenship expectations:

1. Professionalism

Students must understand professionalism in their academic lives as distinctly different from their social lives.

Students should maintain professionalism during class time. The Baxter Netiquette guide was created for Zoom classes, but its spirit holds true with other platforms. Stay on topic in the chat, only use reaction tools when appropriate and avoid virtual backgrounds that may distract other students. Professionalism is revealed in our written and spoken language patterns, tone, habits of work, and engagement with materials. Students should use appropriate digital communications, including email and other relevant platforms, to converse professionally. Remote learning requires a distinct level of generosity. Students should ask: How are we contributing to this community and making it better? When we turn our cameras off, we are attending to our own needs; when we turn our cameras on, we are helping to build our community.

Students will respect work tools. Students are fully responsible for the care of school issued devices and their personal devices. Students will use Baxter network and school related platforms, students will only access sites that are relevant to their educational experience.

2. Safety/Identity Protection

Students must protect their credentials to protect their identity. Students must respect the privacy of all community members.

Students should never share their school-provided or personal credentials online or in-person except with their parents or guardian or under the direction of their teachers if necessary. Baxter faculty and staff will never ask for a student’s credentials. If access to a school-provided account is necessary by staff, the student’s password will be changed and a new one provided.

Students have a right to privacy and to maintain the security of personal information in the digital community. This process begins by individuals controlling what personal information they share through the local network and Internet.
