ne thing about European trade shows is that you get a different perspective about equipment, techniques and companies that are making waves. The Intermat trade show being held in Paris this month is an example. Their Innovation Awards include some names that are not very familiar on this side of the pond. There are four categories and each category has two awards, one for Equipment and Machinery and one for Components and Accessories, which I will call for simplicity E&M and C&A awards.

In Earthmoving & Demolition, Volvo Construction Equipment won the E&M award for the EX2, a prototype, all-electric, zero-carbon emission tracked excavator offering 10 times higher efficiency and 10 times lower noise levels than a conventional version. DMIC received the C&A award for UBIWAN SMART, a connected management solution for construction machinery and equipment.

Fayat took the E&M award in the Roads, Minerals & Foundation category for the TRX 100%, which they say is a unique-in-the-world, highly mobile, hot mix asphalt plant capable of reincorporating 100 to 0 percent RAP in hot and warm mixes. In C&A, RB3D won for Exo Push, a wearable exoskeleton which assists the raker in manual asphalt levelling operations – the first “wearbot” to emerge in the public works field.

In the Lifting, Handling & Transportation category, Hinowa emerged the winner in E&M for their Lightlift 33.17 Performance IIIS tracked aerial platform. A new jib arm with ± 90 degrees rotation, basket rotation of ± 90 degrees, and telescoping main boom and jib arm allow it to easily overcome obstacles up to a working height of 32.5 metres. In C&A, Manitou Group was victorious with a machine stabilization recognition system which uses a strain gauge inside the pin of the stabilizer cylinders on the MRT 2470 and MRT 3050 rotating telehandlers to obtain information on the force exerted on the ground.

The Buildings & Concrete Sector prize in E&M went to Alphi for their MaxUpDown, a tool which uses a compressed-air-powered telescopic mast to effortlessly raise and lower MaxiDalle formwork panels to great heights from the ground. And in C&A, 360SmartConnect won for “connected concrete” which transforms concrete into an interface providing data and services associated with the structure.

There were also five special awards reflecting the most up-to-date issues at stake in the construction sector. Mecalac won the Energy Transition award for the e12 electric wheeled excavator (you can read about it on page 34 this issue). There were also prizes in Digital Transition, Start-up Eurovia, World of Concrete Europe (which went to SIKA France for 3D concrete printing) and Safety. The 3D concrete printing process uses robotics to produce a concrete item in an original shape or design in a short space of time.

three new wheeled excavators feature attachment management system The latest wheeled excavators from Volvo are the short swing EWR150E and EWR170E and the conventional swing EW220E. The EWR150E and EWR170E offer short swing radiuses, making them a good choice for narrow and confined spaces, such as road jobs that require working within only one lane of traffic. At 67.7 inches, the EWR150E has the shortest tail swing radius of all Tier 4 Final excavators on the market, according to Volvo. The larger EWR170E is not far behind with a 70-inch tail swing radius.

The excavators feature Volvo’s Attachment Management System, which stores data on flow and pressure settings for up to 20 different attachments. An optional factoryfitted Steelwrist tiltrotator allows for 360-degree rotation of the attachment, as well as 45-degree tilt from the left or right sides, which drastically reduces repositioning time for very precise digging around utilities. With a two-finger claw on the back, the Steelwrist is also useful for placing pipe.

An optional Boom Suspension System helps absorb shocks that can unsettle the bucket load when travelling at high speeds over rough terrain.

The EWR150E is available in two undercarriage types: a lighter weight, welded

undercarriage with a radial blade or an EW160-class undercarriage featuring bolted-on outriggers and a parallel blade for heavy work. Both the EWR170E and EW220E have bolted undercarriages.

Powerful Mulcher built for full-time work The 480B is a robust mulcher that is able to tackle the toughest terrain with ease. Building on the strong heritage of the M Series Motor Graders, the new Cat 24 Motor Grader is built to provide high performance for construction and maintenance of mine roads. It is equipped with a 7.3-m (24-foot) wide moldboard and is application-matched for medium to large mines running trucks over 180 tonnes payload. An innovative, modular design means components can be removed and installed more quickly, in some cases up to 70 percent faster when compared to the 24M motor grader. Standard Cat GRADE with Cross Slope improves haul road quality, which lowers truck tire wear, decreases rolling resistance and reduces premature tire failure.

The grader features optimized weight balance and 15 percent more low-end torque compared to the Cat 24M. This improves traction and helps maintain consistent ground speed, especially when carrying a large load on the moldboard, working on grade or turning under load. An 11 percent increase in machine weight provides additional blade down pressure and tractive force to increase blading performance.

The automatic power shift transmission uses the Cat Advanced Electronic Control Strategy for smooth shifting, extended component life and improved operator comfort. Two electro-hydraulic joysticks reduce hand and wrist movements by up to 78 percent over conventional lever controls, further improving operator comfort and productivity. The new touchscreen information display and keypad replace most of the three-position switches of the 24M design, providing an enhanced operator interface for more efficient control.

New line of compact sand plants McCloskey Washing Systems has launched a new Compact Sand Plant product line which includes the CSP 60, CSP 120, CSP 200 and CSP 250 single- and twin-sand plants. Each CSP model is tailored to suit any application, regardless of desired tonnage from 20 to 250 tons per hour or silt percentage in the feed material.

The company claims that the Compact Sand Plant range enables superior separation efficiency, produces the driest, drip-free final washed sand product, and produces up to two in-spec sands, to your desired grade, at up to 250 total tph.

Compact heavy-duty scalper Capable of scalping before or after a small crusher, the QE241 scalper features a heavy-duty variablespeed belt feeder and a highly aggressive 11- x 4-foot (3,500- x 124-mm) double-deck screenbox. It has the largest scalping area in its class, and the banana-type bottom deck arrangement provides a highly effective and efficient screening solution. Auger Drills Boast New Technology The redesigned A330 and A650 auger drills have radio remote controls, a first in auger drill operation, according to Joe Caywood, director of marketing at Terex Utilities. The new control system allows the truck, unit controller, and unit engine to talk to each other, which supports the application of radio remote controls. The advantage for the operator is improved productivity, comfort and visual reference.

Many features are automated, including auto brake release, inner-Kelly retract stop, inner-Kelly slack stop, home position, return to centre and dig depth. Return to centre allows the operator to return the auger to the drill position used previously. This

Rugged and versatile, articulated dump trucks are a popular piece of equipment for use in difficult and demanding conditions, from site prep to roadbuilding and aggregates production. ADTs are also benefiting from new and advancing technology intended to improve safety and efficiency. Our panel of experts provide details on the applications, design, technologies and choices in today’s ADTs.

A

rticulated dump trucks are a regular fixture on rough and rugged jobsites. They are used for general construction, quarries, aggregates production, large site developments and heavy highway projects. ADTs are a good fit for jobsites with high rolling resistance and no, or poorly established, roads, noted Scott Thomas, senior product application specialist with Caterpillar.

“While a third of the market is made up of the 25to 30-metric-ton size class typically used in tighter roadbuilding site development, the trend in the market is showing that the larger size ADTs are in high demand from operators, specifically in the quarry and aggregate industry,” said Maryanne Graves, John Deere’s product market manager, ADTs. “We’re also seeing a lot of customers matching their alreadyowned loading tools, like an excavator or four-wheeldrive loader, to the size of the ADT and quantity needed. This optimizes cycle times and optimizes all of the machines across the jobsite.”

Volvo Construction Equipment’s customers are using articulated haulers in a variety of applications – from mines to aggregate sites, to utility construction, site prep and waste or scrap handling – all for their

versatility, noted Robert Palermo, the company’s product manager for articulated haulers.

In Canada, Volvo has found that their customers have a particular geographic area where ADTs prove themselves beneficial: the far north.

“Articulated haulers are a particularly good fit in areas of Canada with permafrost,” Palermo said.

“With their lower ground pressure, they can access areas that other machines, including rigid trucks, cannot, without building a special access or haul road.

Volvo also offers lower-profile and wide tire options, letting users lower the ground pressure even more.”

Robert Franklin, sales and marketing director, Americas, for Terex Trucks commented that their customers are using ADTs on a broad range of jobs to carry out pipeline work, clear sites for new homes to be built, in mining and to help construct new roads.

In addition, Terex trucks tend to have several careers, he added. “Our trucks are often sold into dealer rental fleets for the first 18 months. Once they have built up a certain number of hours on the clock, they are typically sold on to customers.”

Some trucks are even breaking out of those molds thanks to programs from manufacturers.

engineer a wide range of products to help contractors in numerous applications. “Some of the more uncommon ones we’ve done include a scraper hauler, and modifying a hauler into a water truck,” Palermo said. “We are also helping scrap recyclers modify our standard haulers to be used to feed the conveyor and move material around the yard.”

Thomas said that Caterpillar has seen substantial industry growth in North America for their articulated truck product line over the past three years. “Our customers see the value in utilizing them and many have made ATs their preferred method for moving material.”

Market conditions in Canada have been challenging recently, but manufacturers are seeing an uptick in that sector. Terex’s Franklin noted that in the past few years, the decline in oil prices has affected construction equipment sales, particularly in areas like Alberta. “As oil prices are rising, we are starting to see a positive impact on the number of ADTs we are selling in Canada. However, there is still a divide in terms of performance. Western Canada is (and historically has been) a stronger region for us compared to eastern Canada.”

Volvo is also seeing sales in mining and recycling markets.

“More light mining and gold mining companies are turning to the 60-ton hauler to replace rigid trucks in order to avoid building a haul road. This again is due to the articulated hauler’s ability to operate in areas otherwise inaccessible,” Palermo said.

“Among scrap recyclers, a popular option is to modify our standard haulers so they can use them to load material at the conveyor and move it around the yard. They can move as much waste in one load with

an articulated hauler as they can with several wheel loaders,” he added.

Safety, service and versatility important

With such a wide variety of industries making use of ADTs today, it’s not surprising that manufacturers are expanding their ranges and innovating through technological and other advances.

One example is the new Volvo Dynamic Drive system, which provides an improved gear-shifting strategy that takes into consideration both the payload and the gradient of the slope. The articulated hauler will automatically detect when to choose a higher starting gear or when to shift up earlier.

According to Palermo, “when conditions require, the machine will prolong the gear, ensuring maximum rim-pull. Customers can expect a 3 to 10 percent fuel efficiency improvement, depending on the model.”

Another advance is the new Volvo Engine Brake (VEB) system, which dynamically adjusts torque and shift points against the current load, inclination and rolling resistance, improving brake life by reducing the need to use the brake and retarder pedal when going downhill.

“Also beneficial on inclines is Hill Assist, which holds a hauler in place on steep slopes without the need to engage the parking brake,” said Palermo.

“The feature automatically activates when arriving at a complete stop on a hill and is disengaged when the operator accelerates.”

A full suspension model may be preferred over a conventional hauler, which uses mechanical connections between the frame and axle. Volvo’s

“Adoption of articulated haulers is continually growing throughout North America and across all market segments. Contractors find it to be an ideal machine in a variety of applications because of the productivity they get and the machine’s ability to maneuver over rough terrain and access areas that other equipment cannot,” Palermo said. “Among the trends we’re seeing at Volvo Construction Equipment is interest in higher-tonnage articulated haulers. The 40-ton truck has long been the biggest seller, but our 45-ton machines are now equalling them in sales, and orders for our 60-ton A60H are exceeding our expectations.”

Caterpillar’s Thomas noted that the trend has been moving to larger capacity machines for those customers who are more production oriented; however, the 25- and 30-ton class is very popular with the rental houses, utility customers and in those areas where small roads make it difficult to transport these machines. “High-production applications are the april 2018

“This allows the FS truck to hydraulically move the suspension based on the terrain,” said Palermo.

“In addition to allowing the machines to move quickly on rough terrain, the hydraulic connections create a less bumpy ride that eliminates vibration and noise.”

Manufacturers have worked towards improving traction and capability on hilly sites.

One example of this is Caterpillar’s fully Advanced Automated Traction Control, which has been improved by technology that will proactively apply the differential locks prior to any wheel spin, noted Thomas. Terrain-based throttle smoothing prevents the truck from surging when an operator is travelling over extremely rough terrain and is unable to keep steady pressure on the accelerator pedal.

“Cat’s CX38B High Density Power Shift transmission enhances the truck’s overall performance and productivity, while permanent six-wheel drive enables the truck to navigate even the most challenging terrain,” Thomas said. “Automatic retarding control manages machine retarding through a combination of engine, brake, gear selection and service brake application without operator intervention. Hill assist facilitates efficient stopping and starting on grades, while the Waiting Brake system, quickly engaged by a push-button on the control lever, temporarily applies the service brake during pauses in the work cycle.”

Deere offers what Graves described as an industryexclusive auto differential lock that can make it easier for operators possessing any skill set to manage difficult conditions on the job.

If the truck is experiencing slippage, the truck will engage the differential lock automatically. Operators can also engage the diff lock on the fly. This feature allows operators to power through softer underfoot conditions on the jobsite.

There is also assistance for Deere ADTs on hills.

Hill Hold allows the machine to stay in position while the operator is loading the machine, which can prevent any shifting of materials. “All these features are making operation easier for operators of any skill set, improving productivity and making our customers more money,” Graves added.

Machine monitoring and on-board weighing are making ADTs more efficient.

their machine. “Large quantities of data such as fuel consumption are captured, and can be viewed from desktop and mobile devices,” said Franklin. “They can also be downloaded as hard copy reports. This gives customers a heightened level of control over their ADTs.” John Deere’s JDLink machine monitoring system is able to monitor the health of the truck and remotely diagnose issues in the field, which reduces downtime, Graves explained. “Additionally, the recently opened Machine Health Monitoring Centre is changing how John Deere and its dealers analyze data and proactively support customers through mainstream technology, empowering dealers to use advanced telematics and alert management tools to stay on top of potential issues.”

At Volvo, on-board weighing is now standard on their A35G and larger models, allowing the hauler operator to see the actual tonnage on the in-cab display in real time. Palermo explained that “the display also includes the Econometer feature, showing fuel economy in the form of gallons per transported ton per work cycle for the last ten cycles. When Volvo introduces Haul Assist later this year – a data-rich program integrated into the in-cab Co-Pilot interface – operators will have even greater visibility to data that will help them optimize haul routes and track progress in real time.”

Cat Connect PAYLOAD technology for their 745 truck allows customers to optimize operations and improve overall jobsite efficiency. Their Production Measurement system also gives operators the ability to measure and deliver accurate payload with the confidence to boost productivity, lower costs and reduce the risk of overload damage, Thomas explained.

The cab is another area that has received attention recently.

Caterpillar, for example, has re-engineered the cab in the 745 AT from the inside-out to improve safety and ease of operation, Thomas said.

“The external ‘spinal’ ROPS structure boasts bonded rear quarter glass that eliminates the structural pillar to give the operator a dramatic improvement in visibility from the cab. Upon cab entry, the ‘wake up’ feature initiates machine displays as soon as the door is opened, while the lighter, stronger cab door offers shut assist for improved sealing against dust infiltration. The quieter cab design lowers inside sound levels by 5 dB at the operator’s ear.”

Cat also provides the operator with a combined transmission and hoist lever for more efficient single-lever control over both speed and body

hoisting functions, minimizing operator effort and automating repetitive operations.

“At the flick of a switch, operators can choose between manual or fully automatic assisted hoisting control, which automatically applies the Waiting Brake, sets the transmission in neutral and hoists the body to maximum angle at high rpm,” Thomas said.

Deere has optimized its cabs to improve productivity, noted Graves. “Our cabs have a significant low noise level to ensure that operators in them for an extended period of time have an optimal measure of comfort. An Adaptive Suspension Control System provides a smoother ride over rough terrain.

The trucks also have a spacious training seat next to the operator so they can do on-the-job training.”

Things to consider when buying

When it comes time to make a decision on what ADT to purchase, there are some considerations that should be kept in mind – ranging from size to performance and financing.

According to Franklin, buyers should consider ADTs if they are looking for machines that can work in difficult conditions easily and at as low an operating cost as possible, while also providing good value for money and a comfortable environment for drivers.

“We’re starting to see fewer skilled operators in the job market, so companies have to work that much harder to look after them and make sure they’re happy. Providing good equipment is essential if you want to attract – and retain – the best employees,” Franklin said. “To make sure you’re buying the hauler that’s right for you, you should ask yourself a series of questions, such as ‘what is the job at hand?’

The terrain, weather conditions and material you’ll be loading into the machine will all help determine which truck you should buy. You also need to think about size – and not only of the truck you’re buying, but also of the fleet you will need.”

Matching the truck to its loading equipment, to ensure efficient pass matching, is also key; if the vehicle and loader aren’t matched well, it can lead to longer load times, Thomas added.

Features that improve productivity and efficiency are critical, but are only part of a larger picture, according to Volvo. For that, software is beginning to play a part.

“Buyers are always looking for the most efficient way to get the job done and achieve the lowest cost per ton they can,” said Palermo. “This goes beyond the hauler, however. An organization’s entire operation plays a role. We’re seeing a growing number of customers interested in conducting an analysis via site simulation software, a process that is typically completed with the help of an equipment dealer or OEM. It involves gathering and analyzing data on the jobsite – including haul roads, material weights and densities, cycle times and amount of material moved – all with the end goal of determining the ideal fleet mix for that particular jobsite.” HEG

Its low 10-foot 5-inch (3,164 mm) loading height easily matches with 40- to 60-ton hydraulic excavators or 5.5- to 7.5-cubic-yard wheel loaders.

The HM400-5 features the Komatsu Traction Control System that automatically provides optimum traction in soft ground

conditions and reduces tire wear.

As ground conditions worsen and tire slippage is detected, automatic application of the interaxle lock occurs, providing power to all three axles. If tire slippage continues to be detected by the sensors, four independent brakes can be applied to regain traction.

Bell E Series

The new E series range of Bell ADTs now includes a wider, quieter and more spacious cabin that is fully climate-controlled. Operator safety and comfort features include a 10-inch full-colour display screen, automotive mouse interface and sealed switch module with air suspension seat to provide unsurpassed levels of visibility.

A glass door ensures that drivers have improved visibility of the access steps and articulation area, where pedestrians are at high risk. The standard backup camera display has been integrated into the 10-inch main screen.

For safety and ease of operation, Bell’s trucks do not use retarder pedals or levers. The retarder aggressiveness is simply set on the switch pad – or the truck’s Descent Control can do it automatically. Doosan DA30-5 and DA40-5 Doosan DA30-5 and DA40-5 articulated dump trucks are ideal for hauling materials any time a construction firm is working in an off-road situation such as an open jobsite. ADTs can easily traverse muddy or soft terrain with six wheels, and Doosan ADTs have limited-slip differentials for exceptional traction. A key differentiator of Doosan ADTs is the location of the turning ring in relation to the articulation point. Doosan places it in front of the articulation point to ensure equal weight distribution to the front wheels, optimizing maneuverability in all working situations.

Another benefit of Doosan ADTs is the free-swinging, rear tandem, geardriven bogie, which keeps the rear wheels in contact with the ground and provides a smooth ride on very rough ground and soft terrain. Doosan ADT operators experience increased stability as the trucks move across roadways and jobsites. A lighter weight alternative to the larger hauler in the Terex Trucks range, the TA300 is the company’s best seller in Canada and the United States. The TA300 suits Canadian customers and the jobsites they work on. Customers tend to use these machines on smaller quarries, infrastructure developments and commercial construction projects together with a smaller loader or excavator.

The Gen 10 TA300 is the newest generation of ADT. It has a max payload of 30.9 tons and a heaped capacity of 22.9 cubic yards. The TA300 is fitted with a high-performance 370-hp, fuel-efficient engine, ensuring excellent productivity.

It meets Tier 4 Final emission requirements without using a DPF, reducing service requirements.

Record-breaking World of Asphalt

World of Asphalt Show & Conference is the largest education conference and exhibition focused on the asphalt, pavement maintenance and traffic safety industry sectors. This year’s record-breaking event, held March 6–8 in Houston, Texas, had sold-out show floor space and over 8,300 attendees came from all U.S. states, all Canadian provinces and more than 60 other countries.

“This was one of our best events ever that delivered it all for industry professionals: product innovations, focused education and quality networking,” said Kevin Kelly, president of Walsh & Kelly and World of Asphalt 2018 chair.

Hamm, Vögele and Wirtgen

Hamm’s new nine-tonne HD+ 90i PH tandem roller with hybrid powertrain was introduced at World of Asphalt and previewed in the February issue of Heavy Equipment Guide. The roller combines a diesel engine, which covers the base load, while an hydraulic accumulator meets peak loads. This allows the roller to use a smaller diesel engine, 55.4 kW instead of 85 kW in the conventional version, which saves about 15 percent in fuel. The machine is also significantly quieter and has lower maintenance cost. Field evaluations show that compaction is as good as with the conventional HD+ 90ii.

Six variants are available: double vibration (VV), double vibration with split drum (VV-S), one oscillation and one vibrating drum (VO), one oscillation and one split vibrating drum (VO-S), combi roller (VT), and combi roller with split vibrating drum (VT-S).

Hamm broadened their split-drum, drum-steer tandem roller line with the launch of the DV+ 90i VV-S. This is a rigid-frame, nine-tonne model with vibration in both split drums. An intelligent drive control, large turning angles and pivot steering with four steering modes form the basis for the highest possible compaction quality. The weight is always evenly distributed on the DV+ due to the positioning of the engine in the centre of the machine and the use of a two-part water tank.

Gentle braking and reversing with simultaneous seat reversal, and subsequent acceleration, are made very easy thanks to the sophisticated automatic reverse transmission. The result is perfectly smooth asphalt paving with no bumps or hollows, the company said.

Hamm also displayed the three-ton HD 12 VV which has two 47-inchwide vibration drums, and the 1.8-ton HD 10C VT combi roller with a 39.4inch smooth drum in front and four rubber tires in the rear. Both are part of Hamm’s CompactLine of 15 smaller-sized rollers with drums from 31 to 54 inches wide. VO models are also available with vibration in the front and oscillation in rear. All offer superb driving characteristics due to unique three-point articulation (which maintains even weight distribution across the drum width, even in tight turns, thus reducing cutting on the asphalt surface), high compaction force and low centre of mass.

With the 10-foot tracked Super 2000-3i and the wheeled Super 2003-3i pavers – the former shown at World of Asphalt – Vögele has developed two entirely new pavers for the North American market, designed primarily for use in highway construction and largescale commercial applications. These two new pavers can be combined with the VF 600 screed with front-mounted extensions, as well as the VR 600 or AB 600 screeds with rear-mounted extensions. The AB 600 extending screed is equipped with both a vibration system and tamper, meaning it can achieve higher compaction and is ideal for placing recycled materials as well as rollercompacted concrete (RCC).

Vögele also featured their eight-foot wheeled paver, the Super 1703-3i which can cover a wide range of applications, from small municipal jobs to highway construction and rehabilitation.

For commercial contractors, Vögele had their Super 700-3i compact commercial paver which gives paving

widths from 20 inches to 10 feet 6 inches and handles paving projects from bike paths to shoulders, utility cuts, parking lots, and even residential streets and country roads.

Wirtgen displayed the W 35 Ri from the small milling machine range. The operator can call up all the important information on the colour display using four “favourites” buttons integrated in the armrest and which can be programmed with any of 20 different functions. The operator can also intuitively control the height of the machine from the multifunctional armrest.

A load limiting controller keeps the W 35 Ri within an optimum performance range at all times, and an antistall system prevents the engine from shutting off in the event of sudden overloads by automatically releasing the clutch in a fraction of a second.

Automated height adjustment of the crawler units also supports the levelling and milling process. The height of the crawler units can also be adjusted in steps of 1 mm or 5 mm increments using a new millimetre-height function to precisely set the milling depth.

Applications include partial road repairs, cutting slots and milling tieins, renovation of industrial floors, removal of road markings, and cutting of rumble strips.

Caterpillar

Caterpillar introduced three cold planers, three production-class tandem vibratory rollers, and two utility compactors at the show.

The PM310, PM312 and PM313

cold planers are ideal for small-tomedium jobsites where compact dimensions, maneuverability and high production are required. They can be configured with one of three drum widths and a choice of wheel or track undercarriage. An articulating right leg can be positioned outboard to provide additional stability during demanding cuts, or positioned inboard for true flush cutting on the right side.

The units are equipped a 242-kW (325hp) Cat C9 ACERT engine. Rotor and chamber for the PM310, PM312 and PM 313 are 1.0, 1.2 and 1.3 metres, respectively.

Unique to Caterpillar, the rotor system is extended inward towards the chassis as opposed to extending outside the frame. This allows the three models to possess the same overall machine width despite different width of cut.

This design feature also enables the swinging leg on the right side to position in-line with the rotor for highproduction cuts, or inboard in front of the rotor for flush cutting. This also eases loading and transport.

The cutting chamber and rotor are positioned at the back of the machine to enable executing a cut tight to obstacles, and the operator station is located above the cutting chamber for excellent visibility and reference to the cut.

Caterpillar also announced the addition of production-class tandem vibratory rollers, the CB13, CB15 and CB16, with the numbers representing the weight class in tons. Vibratory options are Oscillatory, Dual Amplitude, Dual Frequency, Versa Vibe with four

amplitudes and two frequencies, and Five Amplitude systems. These models feature a newly designed centre-articulating hitch with six degrees of oscillation that ensures mat contact and a smoother ride over uneven surfaces.

The Cat C4.4 engine is rated at 106 kW (142 hp). Cat Compaction Control is available as an option.

Cat introduced two utility compactors. The CB1.7 and CB1.8 in the 1.7 mt and 1.8 mt size class are simple to operate and feature automatic activation and front- or both-drum vibratory capabilities. The high-amplitude vibratory system, combined with large diameter drums and the exclusive eccentric-weight design, delivers excellent compaction. These models are designed to easily fit in the rental fleet.

Dynapac’s new FC1600C paver is a highway class model in a commercial class package with an innovative COOL BOX cooling system that keeps the drive components operating at optimal performance even on hotter days. A 99-hp Cummins engine with double-pump drive system provides the power to push fully loaded trucks. The company claims that the 4,500-pound electrically heated VF0816C screed is the best in the industry for pre-compaction and mat quality. Two bottom

augers are mounted with the screed extension and provide continuous delivery of material for wide width paving applications. Standard paving width is 8 to 15.5 feet, with maximum paving width of 18 feet.

Dynapac also introduced oscillation to their Generation VI Double Drum Roller Line, starting with the CO4200 model. Tim Hoffman, product manager for rollers at Dynapac North America, said that their latest oscillation technology meets specific needs in the marketplace, particularly high-quality compaction in areas where vibration needs to be reduced – like bridge decks or areas adjacent to foundations – or in thin asphalt overlay applications. He added that oscillation can also help reduce the risk of damage for less qualitative aggregates. Oscillation force is up to 27,450 pounds (122 kN) with an oscillation frequency of 2,400 vpm (40 Hz).

In vibration mode, the unit delivers up to 28,780 pounds (128 kN) of centrifugal force, and a vibration frequency of 3,060 vpm (51 Hz) in high amplitude mode and 18,880 pounds (84 kN) of centrifugal force and 4,020 vpm (67 Hz) in low amplitude mode.

Case launched their new DV45CC combination vibratory roller and new SV212D and SV216D single-drum vibratory compactors.

The DV45CC has an offset drum and high curb clearance on the front and pneumatic tires on the rear to deliver a smooth asphalt finish right up to high curbs or other tight areas.

With an operating weight of 10,296 pounds and drum width of 54 inches, the DV45CC is ideal for walkways, residential driveways, bike paths, tennis courts and small parking lots.

The new Case SV212D and SV216D single-drum vibratory compactors are compatible with both smooth and padfoot drums. The company said these models offer best-in-class centrifugal forces for higher lifts and deeper compaction depths completed in fewer passes and the most climbing power in the

industry, with the ability to climb grades of up to 65 percent. They feature a low centre of gravity, axle-free design. A high-traction, hydrostaticdrive system provides constant power to the wheels and drum using an electronic self-adjusting torque-control system.

The new 154-hp Tier 4 Final engine also delivers greater torque than previous models. Performance on rough, uneven terrain is improved with an oscillating, articulated roller joint that maintains consistent drumto-ground contact.

Roadtec debuted their state-of-theart Auto Cut technology which comes standard on their RX-600e cold planer, one of the six Roadtec machines at the show. The RX-600e is a half-lane asphalt milling machine that is able to cut flush on both left and right sides, which means there is no need to align the machine for cuts against barrier walls, curbs and obstacles.

Auto Cut allows milling machine operators to easily raise the mill, walk over obstacles, walk back into the cut, and resume milling at same depth, without reprogramming or delay.

Auto Cut is paired with ACE, Roadtec’s sophisticated grade and slope sensor system, and uses averaging skis and end gate sensors. Each leg of the machine is controlled by a different sensor, gathering four data points, which means the data is more accurate.

Data is continuously updated and displayed, keeping the crew on the same page at all times.

Roadtec also showed their SB-2500 Shuttle Buggy Material Transfer Vehicle, RP-170 highway-class paver, SX-8 soil stabilizer/reclaimer, and Guardian Telematics.

With 25 tons of capacity in the main hopper, the SB-2500 Shuttle Buggy acts as an on-site silo enabling non-stop paving while re-mixing hot mix asphalt (HMA) for the best possible mat.

Their SP-100e Stealth Paver delivers a consistent product and easy maintenance while decreasing costs.

It works in tandem with the Roadtec Shuttle Buggy MTV and uses gravity to feed material directly into the auger, eliminating the need for wear parts such as push rollers, slat conveyors, or tandem bogies. This also reduces ma-

chine stress and wear.

The wheeled RP-170 highway-class paver (which also comes in a tracked model, the 175-e) has a minimum paving width of 8 feet and a maximum paving width of 15 feet 6 inches. To avoid centreline segregation, it is equipped with a delta plate that prevents mix from rolling forward under the paver.

Roadtec’s largest soil stabilizer/reclaimer, the 755-hp SX-8, can easily cut 20 inches deep and 100 inches wide.

It has four cutting speeds and righthand flush cut, making it ideal for cold recycling, road rehabilitation and soil stabilization. The operator can even change the cutter drum speed while the engine is running at full rpm, saving time and effort.

The EX10248 is a solution for large producers who need a counterflow plant that can process as much as 50 percent RAP, yet can be controlled by one plant operator and one loader operator. According to the company, the EX10248 boasts the longest aggregate drying and mixing times in the industry, which minimizes the cost per ton and consistently produces quality asphalt to help protect plant owners against out-of-spec damages.

Featuring single-drum counterflow technology, the 275- to 350-tph EX Series plant is available in stationary or portable models.

ADM’s RoadBuilder Series asphalt plants use parallel flow technology, which offers precise control of mix designs at the lowest cost per ton of any parallel flow asphalt plant in the same class, the company said. The system utilizes ADM’s proven flight design to move the moisture-laden aggregate in a rotating, veiled pattern away from the burner. This maximizes heat transfer through the mix. A fuel-efficient Hauck gap-fired StarJet burner produces the dryer flame, which is shaped to minimize asphalt cement burn off. ADM said that the result is cleaner emissions than other parallel flow designs. The

RoadBuilder Series comes in four production sizes of 110, 160, 250 or 350 tons per hour as stationary or portable models.

ADM’s four models of portable and stationary recycle systems transfer RAP from a 15-ton-capacity recycle bin using a heavy-duty weigh conveyor, introducing RAP to the dried aggregate mix after the heating process. Since as much as 50 percent of HMA can contain recycled pavement, the company said that the result is a less expensive finished product that maintains the high quality of a pure virgin aggregate mix.

The auto-vibration feature automatically engages vibration when the machine reaches 1.5 mph and disengages when the speed drops below 1.2 mph, reducing the risk of over-compaction. Ease of operation has been improved with a new side console and display, enabling operators to make adjustments on the fly.

getting the most out of an excavator Tiltrotator allows specialty contractor to complete excavation work 30 to 40 percent faster, work in tighter areas, use a bigger machine and change attachments in 10 seconds

W

hen Sean Coghlan, owner of Shamrock Earthworks Ltd., first attended CONEXPO trade show in 2008, he was looking to find equipment and ideas that would make his business more efficient. He was intrigued by a device called a tiltrotator, demonstrated by dealers representing engcon, a Swedish firm. But he’d just started his Calgary, Alberta-based company, and knew he had to wait a while to make a significant investment.

Fast forward 10 years, and Shamrock Earthworks Ltd. has become a highly respected contractor specializing in large-scale natural rock retaining walls, acreage development, and general excavation. Coghlan is now the proud owner of an engon tiltrotator. He has outfitted a 2015 Volvo ECR145DL excavator to accommodate it, as well as a stone/sorting grapple, digging bucket, grading bucket, compactor, joy sticks, Q-Safe quick coupler and EC-Oil automatic connection system.

Sean Coghlan “I looked at other tiltrotator systems, but engcon had a great attachment selection, their hitch design made the most sense to me,” Coghlan says.

The tiltrotator is a hydraulic attachment mounted on an excavator.

The excavator bucket (or any other attachment) can be rotated through 360 degrees and can tilt 45 degrees to each side. It has been described as similar to a human wrist in its movement.

Although tiltrotators have been used on jobsites in Europe for more than 30 years, they are relatively new in North America.

“Thanks to this system, I am probably completing excavating jobs 30 to 40 percent faster,” Coghlan says.

One reason for this increase in productivity is that he can now maneuver his attachments into tighter areas with ease, and precisely place boulders or other materials exactly where he wants them. “Previously, I had to hand-shovel material into or out of corners or next to structures and tricky-to-reach areas that a standard bucket just can’t get into.”

Coghlan explains that on a typical job, they are always grading material, creating slopes anywhere from one to 45 percent, to make sure that water goes where they need it to, usually away from a house or retaining wall. “With a regular bucket setup I must either put the machine on the same angle I want the bucket to cut, which can be hard on the machine, or square to the slope, which isn’t always possible due to site conditions, trees, buildings and the like, and repeatedly move the machine. The tiltrotator allows me to sit level while the bucket cuts any combination of grades, profiles or contours I am trying to achieve, which means less wear and tear on the undercarriage and swing gear.

“A tiltrotator really makes you rethink how you execute a job,” Coghlan adds. An example he gives is building a road into a property. The engcon tiltrotator with the grading bucket allows him to strip the organics, cut the ditches and crown the road all in one pass. In addition, being able to stay within the work area means less ground

disturbance in sensitive areas and less rehab, which saves time and money.

Another benefit is that it allows Coghlan to use a far bigger machine on a site. “Previously, I had to use a six-ton excavator. I am now using my 15-ton unit because I no longer have to sit square to a retaining wall like before.

I can manipulate materials and attachments from any angle now. When you combine the power, reach and capacity of a bigger machine with the finesse and dexterity of the tiltrotator, that’s a game changer.”

Coghlan also adds that when it takes an operator 15 minutes to change an attachment, say from a bucket to a packer, there is a temptation to cheat a little and use the bucket to do some compacting – a job for which it’s not intended.

“Thanks to the Q-Safe quick coupler and the EC-Oil system, changing attachments takes as little as 10 seconds.

“If you’ve ever tried to pick up an attachment with a regular hitch, you know it can be frustrating if you aren’t

squared up to that attachment. When you can tilt and rotate the hitch it doesn’t matter how the attachment you want is sitting. If I can reach it, I can grab it. Plus, there’s no switching hoses, no undoing bolts, no pounding wedges – no leaving the cab. When it’s easy to change, you tend to always use the right tool for the job,” Coghlan emphasizes.

When asked if the addition of new engcon joysticks was a challenge, he replies: “Sure, there was a learning curve for a couple of days. The addition of two rollers on each joystick that each control something different gives you a lot to think about at first.

“Really, you are almost doubling the number of hydraulic functions the machine can do with this system, so I put some thought into how I wanted it set up before the install happened. Now it feels natural; it’s very intuitive.”

Was he concerned about having a critical equipment supplier nearly 7,000 km away? “It hasn’t been a problem at all. When I ordered new teeth for my grapple, they showed up in two days. That’s fast,” he says. Engcon now has a North American office, which should make any future orders even quicker and easier.

“I’m always looking to learn about new equipment, attachments, materials, suppliers and techniques. Excavators have evolved from just a simple digging machine with one bucket to the incredibly capable and adaptable machines they are today. It’s hard to put into words how much more accurate and versatile my excavator feels with the tiltrotator. It’s like going from 2D to 3D. There’s no question, I’m much more efficient with my engcon system. This is good for business, but at the same time I deliver the type of high-quality finish my clients deserve.”

omatsu says that the PC390LCi-11 is the first 3D semi-automatic excavator available with the nimbleness and speed of 36-tonweight-class machines and the stability of much larger machines. It is powered by an 8.85-litre, 257-hp, Tier 4 Final SAA6D114E-6 engine.

Komatsu says that their 3D intelligent machine control system features a unique sensor package, including stroke sensing hydraulic cylinders, an IMU

sensor and GNSS antennas. The machine uses 3D design data loaded into the machine’s monitor to accurately display machine position relative to target grade. When the bucket reaches the target surface, automation kicks in to limit over excavation.

“Whether it’s production excavating, utility trenching, site prep or any application where greater over-the-side lift capacity is required, this could be the machine that operators fight over on the jobsite” said Renee Kafka, product specialist, Komatsu America. “Also, to increase operator comfort and convenience, all PC390LCi-11 machines come standard with the machine-control-enhanced joysticks first introduced on the PC210LCi-11.”

Key features on the PC390LCi-11 include: Intelligent Machine Control Joysticks The semi-automatic/manual, mode-switching and design-surface-offset function can be operated with switches on the control levers.

Auto Grade Assist As the operator moves the arm, the boom adjusts the bucket height automatically, tracing the target surface and minimizing digging too deep.

Auto Stop Control During boom and bucket operation, the work equipment automatically stops when the bucket edge reaches the design surface, thus minimizing design surface damage.

Minimum Distance Control The machine controls the bucket by automatically selecting the point on the bucket closest to the target surface. If the machine is not facing a sloped surface at a right angle, it will still follow the target surface and minimize digging below it.

Facing Angle Compass An arrow on the display shows the operator the facing angle relative to target surface. This allows the bucket edge to be accurately positioned square with the target surface.

Realistic 3D Display The machine and design surfaces are shown in realistic 3D. The angle and magnification of the views can be changed, allowing the operator to select the optimum view, depending on work conditions.

Control Box The Intelligent Machine Control monitor uses a large 12-inch screen for visibility and ease of use. The simple screen layout displays the necessary information in an easily understood fashion. A touchscreen icon interface, instead of a multi-step menu, simplifies operation.

KOMTRAX level 5 technology feeds the operator machine data, such as fuel and diesel exhaust fluid levels, Komatsu Diesel Particulate Filter, regeneration status, location, cautions and maintenance alert information.

5 reasons to use an

ejector body

on an articulated truck

M

ost articulated trucks are made to dump material but there are some good reasons to consider an ejector body which pushes material out, according to Weldco-Beales Manufacturing, a company that designs and manufactures specialized heavy equipment attachments for OEMs. In fact, after many years of providing ejector bodies for underground applications, they recently added models for above ground use as a result of market demand.

WBM says there are five reasons to consider ejector bodies.

1. Safety and stability By eliminating the need to raise the body, the risk of hitting overhead obstacles is reduced. The risk of the machine tipping is also lowered due to enhanced stability. As a result, the

operator is able to dump more safely in height-restricted areas and on uneven/ sloped or softened grounds.

2. Control The operator is better able to control the dump speed and the spread of material by adjusting both the ejection speed and driving speed. The material can therefore be spread more evenly and over a larger distance.

3. Dumping in height-restricted areas Dumping does not require additional height clearance, making it easier to dump under bridges, power lines, or even underground. If the machine fits, it can dump.

4. Minimized material retention Since the material is physically pushed out, retained material in the body after dumping is nearly eliminated. This leaves more room in the

body for the next load.

5. Productivity Enhanced productivity is the result of the combined previous four benefits. With fewer height and ground obstacles, the material can be dumped where it needs to be without involving other machines. With enhanced control, the material can be spread in the first pass without the need to slow down between dump and return. Minimized material retention increases the size of each dump for faster cycle times.

WBM Ejector Bodies are available

in various models for all articulated dump truck brands and sizes. Each is designed to use the original manufacturers’ components including cylinders, sequencing valve, pins and bushings where applicable. This makes installation easy; after the original dump bed is removed, the WBM Ejector Body is put into place and connected using those factory components, and then some cab wiring is involved. Although in-house installation by WBM is available, it is usually done by the dealer or end user.

From new heavy lifting options to challenging projects, the crane and lift industry has been very active this year. Heavy Equipment Guide looks at some of the latest developments.

he first Grove TMS9000-2 truck crane to be delivered in Canada has immediately gone to work for its owners at R&D Crane Rental. The lighter, longer and stronger 115 USt unit offers a lighter carrier, a 169-foot main boom and impressive load charts.

For the Burnside, Nova Scotiabased rental company, the TMS90002 represented an opportunity to grow its business.

“We’re a relatively new company, and we wanted to add a crane to our fleet that would boost our reputation in Canada,” said Alex Jenkins, operations manager of R&D. “We feel that the TMS9000-2 has done that. The main selling point for us was the longer main boom. Other comparable cranes only have 142 feet of main boom, while the TMS9000-2 gives you 169 feet.”

The TMS9000-2’s added reach is already coming in handy on the jobsite. R&D is putting the crane to work to help build a new Marriott-branded hotel in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where the crane is hoisting formwork panels at radii ranging from 140 to 150 feet.

Jenkins also credited the crane’s weight and 115 USt capacity with giving R&D an edge over its competition.

“The TMS9000-2 has a comparable gross weight to that of a lowercapacity crane, but you also get extra boom length. This makes it easier to get proper road permits in our region,” 30

Cropac Equipment, a Terex Cranes distributor with locations in Ontario, Quebec and Alberta, has recently placed an order for four Demag cranes, including the AC 300-6, AC 220-5 and AC 160-5 allterrain machines.

Since being reintroduced to the global market in 2016, Demag all-terrain cranes have continued to gain traction among lift and access companies.

Demag all-terrain cranes are among the most compact units in each of their respective capacity classes, and are easy to transport, set up and rig. Each unit also features the latest crane innovations, including the optional IC-1 Plus control system that calculates the crane’s lifting capacity for every boom position as a function of the superstructure’s slewing angle in real time. Demag all-terrain cranes’ design, features and functionality deliver high productivity and exceptional return on investment.

Infrastructure projects often require hefty loads to be lifted and moved; when that load is a bridge beam, the job calls for plenty of crane power. In one recent case, that called for brandnew Link-Belt equipment.

Contractor United Infrastructure faced some tough conditions as part of a bridge replacement project on a busy state route. Notably, the job required the placement of 170-foot bulb-tee beams each weighing 200,000 pounds

– some of the longest erected in that particular region. To successfully complete the work, United purchased a brand-new 250-ton 298 Series 2 lattice crawler crane from Link-Belt, as well as a 298 HSL. Only half of the 500-foot-wide river could be blocked off at one time during construction with barge platforms.

The efficient footprint of the two Link-Belts allowed for greater river width, and also eased the logistics of barge placement.

Each crane used identical rigging consisting of 40-foot-long, doubled over nylon Kevlar-reinforced slings rated at 200,000 pounds each. With 100 feet of boom in one crane and 120 feet on the other, there was plenty of headroom to pick the beams off the existing bridge and place them on the new pier caps, or swing them 180 degrees directly behind the crane to the storage barge for later placement.

The tandem lifts required the operators to synchronize their moves while lifting, swinging, booming and lowering. They encountered no problems operating the large-capacity Link-Belt 298 rigs.

Italian manufacturer Raimondi Cranes has introduced a new approach to heavy lifting with its LR330 luffing jib crane. The company states that its newest addition is productive, strong and durable to handle tough lifts with ease.

The Raimondi LR330 is the newest luffing jib crane in the range with a maximum jib length of 60 metres and a maximum capacity of 18,000 kg, with two falls and four falls configurations. At maximum radius, it can lift 3,300 kg in ultra-lift mode. Six different jib length configurations, from 30 to 60 metres, satisfy all needs in terms of specific jobsite configurations. The LR330 may be equipped with three different hoisting winches: standard installed power of 80 kW or the two falls configuration with the more powerful 110 kW, while the four falls configuration has an installed power of 80 kW. The LR330’s ease of use is most apparent to crane operators who can now control and tailor the machine’s work to their preferences, thereby reducing jobsite stressors. Together with the new Raimondi safety control system, there is a significant advancement in performance and control of the LR330’s three movements. Crane operators can now choose between three different configurations, enabling a change in parameters related to movement speeds and dynamic. This functionality allows the operators to align the crane closer to their specific needs.

For Linden Comansa and cab designer BigD, the prestigious iF Award, in the Vehicles and Automobiles section, represents the icing on the cake of a project that took almost two years to complete. According to Alberto Munárriz, Linden Comansa’s general manager, “The iF award recognizes the great work of BigD, who knew how to put themselves in the shoes of a crane operator from anywhere in the world to offer a pleasant work space with the greatest possible comfort. In addition, the CUBE cab offers an innovative aesthetic design, very different from what the market has offered so far, and includes all of the technical requirements that we needed to add to the cabin as a fundamental part of the crane.”

Users of truck-mounted cranes have a new option to consider as Stellar Industries has released the Model 6521 telescopic crane, with a maximum lifting capacity of 6,000 pounds. This new crane is designed to the same standards as the Stellar Heavy-Duty Crane Line and has the same look and feel.

Every 6521 crane comes standard with the Stellar CDT (Crane Dynamics Technology) system. The Stellar CDT system is a proprietary collection of revolutionary, industry-first features that control, power, and monitor these new cranes. The Stellar CDTequipped cranes will engage and communicate with the crane operator by using multiple sensory indicators when approaching maximum capacity. Three main features of this control system include the use of coloured LED lights and pulsating vibrations transmitted through the hand-held remote handle.

Some Stellar CDT systems will also allow the operator to go into a Boost Mode and operate at 118 percent of its normal operating capacity for a short period of time when at maximum capacity. The third revolutionary feature of the CDT system is the ability to function in safety mode when a safety feature is damaged or malfunctions.

The 6521 offers boom articulation of -10 to +80 degrees. This allows the operator both easy reach to stow the snatch block as well as offering maximum ability to load items into the load bed. An additional feature to this

crane is the quick release snatch block stow hook. This can be found on the underside of the boom and allows the operator to easily un-stow and stow the snatch block. When the boom is raised to 60 degrees, the unique design allows the snatch block to gently release ensuring a safe and orderly deployment.

Terex Utilities has added a new option for users of its Commander Digger Derricks – Load Display. This operator aid adds a load cell which measures the actual winch line pull, and displays it at the control station to help operators as they follow the load chart. The load cell attaches between the winch line and hook and wirelessly transmits the value to the display.

Digger Derrick Load Display was one of several concept technologies Terex Utilities featured at the International Construction & Utility Equipment Expo last fall. Customers can now request Digger Derrick Load Display on new Commander Digger Derricks or to retrofit on existing models. Available as a six-ton system for single-line capacity, the actual load must be calculated based on the number of parts of line used times the value displayed.

Mecalac e12 100%

electric excavator designed for urban building sites

F

ully electric construction equipment is a hot topic; an excellent example is the Mecalac e12 excavator which will be shown at the Intermat trade show in Paris in April.

Heavy Equipment Guide staff attended a pre-Intermat event for the international trade press where we learned about the e12 and that it was the winner of the Intermat Innovation Award for Energy Transition. This was one of five Intermat special awards reflecting the most up-to-date issues at stake in the construction sector. The Mecalac e12 was one of 13 prize winners from among 90 entries. The award mentioned that this is the world’s first compact wheeled excavator running only on electricity, without compromising on battery life, performance and compactness.

The e12 is a 100 percent electric version of the Mecalac 12MTX wheeled excavator loader. It meets three key requirements of urban building sites, according to Patrick Brehmer, head of design and product management for Mecalac: range, performance and compactness.

“The key to our machine’s range and performance is in its very architecture,” he said. “The power source – which is separate from the upper structure – means we can install a record capacity of 146 kWh, which results in an unrivalled range of eight hours.”

The structure was designed from the outset for use in cities and uses two independently operating electric motors, one powering the excavation mechanism and one for movement.

The 650 V LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) battery has a capacity of 146 kWh and provides three times as many charge cycles with complete safety: no risk of fires and no risk of battery fluid leaks.

Battery power also means that the e12 has less vibration, less noise pollution, and less maintenance time and cost (no more filters, oil, etc.). It also produces no CO2 or particulate emissions.

The battery pack is positioned in the rear part of the articulating chassis where its weight provides stability for the excavator. An articulated chassis also means the e12 can move easily around any site.

Mecalac says that their electric transmission offers unrivalled tractive force as soon as the engine is started, and also uses brake energy regeneration.

The e12 charging station can be used to recharge the excavator on site in six to seven hours. Without compromising on power, the e12 can work all day without needing to recharge its batteries – it can run for eight hours at the highest power output.

Mecalac’s Connect Energy Link coupler

Mecalac is also showing its new Connect Energy Link coupler at Intermat. This is an updated version of Connect, which was recognized at the 2015 Intermat Innovation Awards for being light, integrated, easy to use and completely safe, and is evolving in 2018 with automatic connection for hydraulic attachments.

In addition to the improved productivity that results from cutting the amount of time normally spent changing attachments, a benefit is improved safety and comfort for operators, who not only no longer need to leave their workstation to connect up hydraulic attachments by hand, but also see their accident risk considerably reduced.

This patented Mecalac innovation uses RFID technology that combines a sensor fitted to the end of the Mecalac excavator’s articulated arm with an electronic chip built into the hydraulic tool.

Every hydraulic tool needs specific settings.

With the new Connect Energy Link coupler, attachment recognition is intuitive and immediate.

Everything is automatically configured in advance from the driver’s seat without the operator needing to become physically involved. There are no more hydraulic settings to manage – the Mecalac Connect Energy Link’s central system takes direct control of adjusting flows/pressure.

Energy-efficient LED light towers The HiLight P2+, V2+ and V3+ electric LED light towers can be powered from an auxiliary power source, a portable generator or the grid.

Excellent for construction and roadwork, the HiLight V2+ and HiLight V3+ are housed on a four-wheel trailer.

Both compact models come with a heavy-duty steel frame, stainless steel mast, and have protection from polyethylene bumpers.

The HiLight V2+ offers a 320-watt LED light source, covering 21,528 square feet. The HiLight V3+ is equipped with four 160-watt LED bulbs with specially designed directional glass optics capable of illuminating an area of up to 32,292 square feet. Both models have manually operated vertical masts that extend up to 18 feet and are designed to withstand wind speeds up to 51 mph.

The DD-WMS 100 Water Management System makes maintaining a constant pressurized water supply, keeping the jobsite clean and disposal of slurry from diamond coring safe and easy.

The WMS offers a full day of water autonomy from four gallons. Water is recycled up to seven times inside the tank, which is equivalent to about 30 gallons of continuous water supply.

During coring, slurry is captured in the filter bag. Once the bag is full, it’s easy to remove the disposable filter bag. Large wheels and a convenient handle make it easy to transport and move around the jobsite.

Mobile Elevated Work Platforms Manitou has introduced a new line of diesel and electric mobile elevated work platforms (MEWPs) for North America.

The ATJ 46 has features that drastically reduce the total cost of ownership, including an automatic start and stop system and a 24-hp Kubota engine that does not require aftertreatment. The Manitou ATJ 46 has a platform height of 45 feet 11 inches. It also boasts an impressive up-and-over reach of 27 feet 3 inches at a height of 24 feet 2 inches. The new ATJ 46 comes standard with four-wheel drive, rough-terrain tires, 14 inches of ground clearance and a 500-pound platform capacity.

Tight Tail Swing Excavator Kubota’s new U27-4 tight tail swing excavator features adjustable auxiliary flow hydraulics, an auxiliary diverter valve and two-speed automatic downshift travel.

Kubota says that the new U27-4 also boasts one of the largest operator stations in its class with a tight tail swing design. An enclosed cab option with heat is also available.

“The new U27-4 will replace the very popular U25S model for Kubota, and we expect our customers will be pleased with the upgraded features,” said Jeff Jacobsmeyer, Kubota product manager, excavators, wheel loaders, TLBs. “It’s a very capable machine on any jobsite, and the best-in-class reach and dig depth really set it apart from the competition.”

The tight tail swing design allows the excavator to maneuver and work in tight spaces where larger equipment can’t fit. Skid Steers boast high Ground Clearance ASV’s large-frame, radial-lift RS-75 and vertical-lift VS-75 skid-steer loaders feature highly efficient hydraulics and cooling systems, as well as excellent ground clearance, departure angle and serviceability.

ASV builds the RS-75 and VS-75 with unique, dedicated skid-steer frames. The result is a 10.5inch ground clearance, more than 2 inches higher than any machine in their class, according to ASV. This allows the skid steers to easily travel over obstructions. The purpose-built chassis also allows for a 24-degree departure angle, decreasing the risk of the machines getting stuck when starting to climb a steep hill.

Chicago Pneumatic Power Technique’s new line of Tier 4 Final CCP vacuum prime centrifugal pumps include 4-, 6and 8-inch models. The pump system consists of a centrifugal pump and an air and water separator, which enables air to be separated from the liquid and be sucked by a vacuum pump – making automatic priming possible. Even with suction heights of several metres, the machine rapidly evacuates the air from the suction pipe and starts to pump.

A semi-open impeller allows the CCP range to pump liquids with solids in suspension.

All three sizes feature rapid “dry” priming up to a height of 27.5 feet and a high resistance to abrasive liquids and sandy waters. A rotary vane vacuum pump is lubricated with an oil recovery system and coalescing filters, which will not contaminate the environment.

Additionally, cast iron lined wear plates are easily replaceable.

Volvo trucks focuses on heavy haul with updates to VNX truck line Designed for both short- and long-haul uses, the new VNX family of trucks can handle larger loads than ever before

C

onstruction contractors handle heavy loads all the time. It’s no small feat to haul an ADT or grader from site to site, and when that piece of equipment is on the trailer it needs a strong truck to pull it, whether it’s across town or in the next province.

Volvo Trucks has tackled the heavy haul challenge with the latest update to its line. The VNX follows extensive updates to Volvo’s highway trucks, as well as to the vocational VHD, and brings a variety of improvements that the company says makes the VNX the “heavy hitter” of heavy haul.

“It’s a very specialized market – there are needs to carry heavy construction equipment, to carry granite blocks, to carry heavy logs. There’s always a need for heavy haul, and it’s very important that we meet those markets,” said Chris Stadler, Volvo Trucks product marketing manager for regional haul.

The VNX family features three truck models: the VNX 300, a day cab tractor, the VNX 400, with a flat roof 42-inch sleeper for overnight runs, and the VNX 740, which features a midroof design and 70-inch sleeper for drivers hauling long distance.

Those low-speed gears mean drivers can get moving a lot easier with heavy loads in many types of ground conditions, on slopes, and in other spots that might be difficult for other transmissions to handle.

For those times when more power is needed, Volvo also offers the Cummins

X15 Performance Series engine. Paired with an Eaton Ultra Shift Plus or manual transmission, the X15 gives the VNX up to 605 hp and 2,050 pounds of torque.

The VNX family is customizable for whatever buyers might need, from front axles with ratings of 16,000 to 20,000 pounds with parabolic springs to rear axles with capacity from 46,000 to 55,000 pounds. It is available in 6x4 tandem, 8x4 tandem and 8x6 tridem configurations.

Dual steering gears give the truck excellent maneuverability under heavy loads. It is also designed with an increased ride height.

Volvo has included a number of other features, down to a heavy-duty tow pin and centre tow frame on the front bumper.

On the safety side, the VNX comes with Volvo Enhanced Stability Technology (VEST), an electronic stability control system that can detect loss of control, jackknifing or potential rollover; the system reduces torque and selectively applies braking

to help keep the truck on course.

Heavy Equipment Guide was given a chance to try the VNX during a media event at Volvo’s New River Valley, Virginia, customer centre. Behind the wheel of the VNX 300, the view is excellent, both from the expansive cab windows and in the mirrors to the back of the lowboy trailer, which in this case was hauling a Volvo G930C grader.

In the cab, everything the driver needs is close at hand and easy to see without looking away from the road.

Put the I-Shift AMT into gear, give it some throttle, and the truck was off without complaint – impressive, with a 90,000-pound GCWR. Once on the road, the VNX 300 is an easy drive and felt a lot like driving a pickup truck despite the heavy load to the rear. Throttle response was smooth and easy, and the truck responded to braking and corners with no issues. A few laps around the Volvo test track felt like a trip to the corner store; for professional drivers who will spend hours and days at a time behind the wheel, that should prove popular. HEG

Class 6/7 MV Series provides owners a variety of potential configurations The Class 6/7 International Truck MV Series was designed from the inside out with the goal of delivering a truck that is easily configurable to produce maximum output day in and day out.

The redesigned features include new cab doors with a lower bottom glass edge and removed vent window, giving the driver a single large piece of glass to look through, greatly improving side visibility and reducing blind spots. By reshaping the doors and side glass, the position of the optional pedestal mirrors was optimized so drivers turn their heads less and keep their eyes on the road while reducing neck strain. Second, a new premium gauge cluster with a digital driver display was added to give drivers real-time monitoring of vehicle operation and other important alerts in clear sight. The new display also offers up to 15 customizable digital gauges.

The new premium instrument panel features a customizable digital display suitable for any medium-duty application. The flat-panel dash contains space for up to 30 customizable switches ensuring functionality for any type of body that is mounted on the back. The switches offer large, easy to read text and are backlit for easy viewing at night. Next, an easy-access columnmounted stalk shifter was integrated to help keep drivers’ hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

The new stalk shifter placement and lower instrument panel design improves leg room for the driver, especially at the knee.

The MV Series is available in a variety of specifications: Regular Cab, Extended Cab, and Crew Cab. It is available with the choice of either the Cummins B6.7 or L9 engine, both of which have been engineered for reliability and durability in order to deliver lower costs of ownership with maximum uptime. The standard transmission on the MV Series is the Alli-

son 1000 HS automatic, with Allison FuelSense 2.0, with DynActive Shifting as an available option that features a patented torque converter to provide infinitely variable shift points based on vehicle configuration operating conditions.

The MV Series is also equipped with a new HVAC system, designed for reliability, which includes a high-performance MAX defrost feature.

To further improve driver productivity and safety, the MV Series features Diamond Logic, an advanced electrical system that streamlines chassis and body equipment integration and allows customers to program automated tasks.

XL Hybrids displayed three fleetready, electrified pickup truck solutions at NTEA’s Work Truck Show in March. XL unveiled what it stated was the industry’s first-ever XLH hybridelectric F-250 pickup, while also displaying an XLP plug-in hybrid-electric F-150.

Now fleets can enjoy an up to 25 percent increase in miles per gallon – and accompanying reductions in CO2 emissions – on trucks used for rugged towing, hauling capacity and utility applications.

The company began production on the XLH hybrid electric system for model year 2018 Ford Super Duty F-250 pickups in March. This will be the first time that Ford F-250 trucks can be ordered by fleet customers with hybrid-electric technology.

Smartphones are becoming more effective as tools for business and industry as they evolve. While the Cat S61 might be called a smartphone, this new unit – an upgrade to the Cat S60 – has a variety of features that simply can’t be found on a phone from the local mall kiosk.

The Cat Phones S61 features an integrated FLIR thermal imaging camera with enhanced software for greater image contrast, expanded temperature range to 400 degrees Celsius, and an upgrade from VGA to High-Definition detail from the visible camera.

Vehicle diagnostics, asphalt monitoring, and higher temperature equipment monitoring are now possible.

It also includes an indoor air quality sensor from Sensirion to alert users to high levels of indoor air pollutants (Volatile Organic Compounds or VOCs) in their working environment. Common sources of VOCs include paints, solvents, carpets, furniture and cleaning products, all common in the environments typical to Cat phone users. The S61 will keep watch over indoor air quality levels and inform users when an unhealthy environment is detected.

Linamar Corporation’s Skyjack division has launched Elevate, a fully customized solution designed specifically for off-highway rental fleets that leaves behind the legacy of on-road telematics.

Elevate follows a mobile-first philosophy. In a fast moving environment with a wide variety of roles any solution needs to go beyond just telematics.

Skyjack has embraced mobile applications that help elevate safety, productivity and utilization for rental companies. Through the use of the Elevate ON and Elevate GO apps, powered by Trackunit, Elevate provides an integrated solution for entire fleets and it’s a solution that follows Skyjack’s philosophy of being simply reliable.

Excavators equipped with 2D or 3D excavator guidance solutions from Leica Geosystems and tiltrotators supported by SVAB Quantum can now use a new functionality, iXE CoPilot, that enables the tilt function on a tiltrotator to be handled automatically.

The tilt will automatically be adjusted so it is held parallel to the surface as the operator pulls in the excavator arm.

“We have developed this new function for three reasons,” said Marcus Grevelshøj, product specialist for excavating and wheel loader solutions at Leica Geosystems. “First, to improve the productivity of experienced excavator operators using tiltrotator attachments; next, to decrease the learning curve of less experienced operators; and finally, to decrease fatigue and stress for all operators as they operate a large machine like an excavator.”

The automatic tilt function for SVAB Quantum is now available on all Quantum platforms, and former versions of Machine Control System (MACS) platforms can be updated to support the functionality. Tiltrotator brands supported by Quantum and the Leica iCON iXE2 2D solution and the Leica iCON iXE3 3D solution will have the possibility to connect to the function.

Mobile field management platform Fieldwire has announced a strategic partnership with the Hilti Group.

“Fieldwire’s approach to jobsite productivity stands out in the construction tech scene and aligns very well with Hilti’s mission,” said Joerg Kampmeyer, Member of the Executive Board and CFO at Hilti. “We were impressed

by Fieldwire’s leadership, and our investment in the company is a first step in establishing a long-standing strategic partnership.”

In recent years, Hilti has made major efforts to digitize the construction industry with software solutions, for example by planning and designing fastening and firestop solutions, bringing BIM to the field or for asset management. While digital has already revolutionized construction planning and design, the focus is now shifting towards

disrupting the way people work on jobsites. Fieldwire’s partnership with Hilti will further shift focus to workers in the field with the goal of empowering them to do their best work.

The typical construction worker spends only 30 percent of their time on actual construction work, with the other 70 percent spent on coordination and communication. Fieldwire’s construction management software gives that time back to those in the field by enabling them to capture, organize and access information such as up-todate drawings and files using a mobile device.

Frontline Machinery hosts Annual Canadian Keestrack Demo Day

On March 13, Frontline Machinery hosted the second annual Canadian Keestrack Demo Day at their Western Canadian head office in Chilliwack, B.C. Heavy Equipment Guide was on site at the event which brought together customers and stakeholders from the aggregate and recycling industry for a live, hands-on demonstration of crushing, screening and stacking conveyor systems.

Frontline Machinery demo’d the Keestrack hybrid trackmounted H4 cone crusher. This is the world's first mobile cone crusher designed with an independent 4- x 6-foot prescreen and a three-deck 5- x 12-foot finishing screen with an oversized material recycling conveyor – producing three high-grade end products in a single pass. This machine features a hybrid diesel-electric drive concept (345 kW diesel / 330 kVA genset / 135 kW e-drive). The uniquely designed on-board generator can be removed from the crusher and placed away from its dirty, abrasive environment during operation. Combined with fully electric options, such as plugging directly into the mains or power from an external or on-board diesel genset, the Keestrack H4 offers superior fuel consumption (up to 70 percent savings) and improved ease of maintenance for long-term reliability.

In memoriam: Erich Janke, Terrafirma Equipment in memoriam The North American heavy equipment industry lost one of its pioneers on March 8 when Erich Janke, owner of Terrafirma Equipment, passed away at the Edmonton Cross Cancer Institute, near his home and business headquarters.

Erich Janke co-founded Terrafirma Equipment in 1967, with one rebuilt wheel loader. Since then, the company has grown into one of the most trusted names in construction, demolition, recycling and aggregate processing equipment sales and rentals in Canada. Erich Janke will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

Also featured was the track-mounted R6e electric impact crusher with up to a 500 tph capacity. Offering up to 45 percent energy savings over diesel hydraulic models, the R6e is available with a 250 kW electric motor for the crusher and an electric 110 kW drive for the on-board hydraulic system. It also offers an optional all-electric plug-in operation from the mains and a plug out operation powering secondary machines such as a stacker or screener. Due to having the largest and heaviest rotor in its class, this machine is ideal for aggressive primary and secondary crushing applications, including concrete and asphalt recycling and quarry applications.
