PEEKING INTO A DESIGNER’S MIND: CHOI WON-SEO
DESIGNER SERIES INSPIRATION
We continue our designer series by introducing an upcoming Korean designer - Choi Won-Seo. He is known for finding beauty in unexpected places. Most people will not associate industrial materials with the word ‘beautiful’ yet Choi WonSeo saw that like people, it was the inside that mattered. When Choi Won-Seo passed by the factories in Euljiro, in South Korea and saw the edges of an aluminum profile, he was quickly drawn and fascinated by the geometric pattern. What a waste to hide such a unique and aesthetic form in a very much overlooked place.. It was therefore due to that accidental discovery that spurred Choi Won-Seo in creating his “Expose the Hidden Beauty” series.

The aluminum profile, which is mainly used to make structures in architectural or industrial sites, is standardized to facilitate the function of joining and disassembling. What is known to be “standardized” for a practical purpose, comes in a geometric pattern which is mesmerizing. Taking this enthralling piece of material and pattern, Choi Won-Seo designed everyday furniture such as chairs and tables to intentional expose the beauty of the overlooked aluminum profile.
Pattern of the Industry Choi Won-Seo, named the form of the aluminum profile as the PATTERN OF INDUSTRIAL, a literal emblem of the industry. In his journey of creating everyday furniture out of the profile of an aluminum, he would sketch the pattern out and from there ideate on how each furniture will look like. He would play mainly with the profile and glass if necessary. Who said industrial materials just needed to be contained to a factory!
