Base tax unpopular with LSSD

Reigning Riders 4-H Club members had an encounter with participants in the Communities for Veterans Ride Across Canada during the Battlefords Agricultural Society Regional 4-H Show and Sale at the exhibition grounds in June.

Water committee minutes educational: councillors

The new City subcommittee set up to oversee North Battleford’s water supply has held its first meeting.

It took place June 2 and included various officials including Mayor Ian Hamilton, director of operations Stewart Schafer and various other water officials and operators from the city.

Minutes from that meeting made its way to the City of North Battleford’s Planning Committee meeting Monday. According to the minutes the meeting included an overview and discussion of all the water facilities, including both Water Treatment Plant No. 1 and F.E. Holliday Plant No. 2, as well as the distribution system which includes the water tower, the 114th street reservoir, Fairview Heights

reservoir, the booster pumping station and underground water piping system. There was also discussion of capital and operations and maintenance projects on the go as well as master plans.

Schafer told council the meeting focused on the water treatment system as well as the water distribution system, and projects coming forward that “we will have to put on our radar and projects we deem are important. As well, we talked about some of the testing that will be coming down the line.”

The water subcommittee was formed on the request of the Water Security Agency who wanted to see monthly meetings and greater transparency in keeping council informed of the activities and projects going on. Quarterly reports to council are also planned.

Councillors at Monday’s

Planning Committee meeting welcomed the minutes from the first water subcommittee meeting. More than one of them noted that far more manpower went into water treatment than they had thought, based on what they’d read.

“I didn’t realize that much work went into it,” was the observation of Councillor Greg Lightfoot, who added the “day-to-day operations is very taxing.”

Hamilton noted “how stressful some of this stuff is, too, to ensure that everything’s up to standard on a timely basis.”

“I came to appreciate the value of the work that’s being done in very demanding situations,” said Hamilton.

The meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month over the noon hour.

The next meeting is set for July 7.

Kidnapping suspect denied bail: back in court June 23 Staff The case against five individuals accused of kidnapping earlier this month continues to make its way through North Battleford Provincial Court.

June 23 is the next court date for Garth Iron, one of two adults charged in the case. In his last appearance in court Tuesday, Iron was denied bail and a publication ban on evidence in his case was issued as well. A decision on bail for three youth suspects was scheduled for Wednesday morning.

The five face charges in-

cluding kidnapping, pointing a firearm, uttering threats, assault with a weapon, pos-

session of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and assault.

Correction

Regarding the caption “Challenging Times” on the front page of the June 11 edition of the Regional Optimist, a few corrections are in order. The Battlefords Boys and Girls Club Race for Kids is an urban street adventure race, not a relay. Participants raised approximately $19,000 and the club received $10,000 in checkpoint sponsorship. Karen Williams did raise the most funds overall, but at the time of cut off, 11:59 p.m. June 5, Kim Hebert was top fundraiser and won the WestJet voucher. We apologize for any inconvenience these errors may have caused.

The Town of Battleford is extending its contract with Loraas Environmental Services to pick up the single stream recycling bin contents for another year.

Meanwhile, the administration and town council will be reviewing Battleford’s entire waste and recycling service.

The report is expected to prompt council to look at both short-term and longterm considerations, including mandatory recycling.

The Town’s current recycling scheme is the voluntary single stream collection area near the Alex Dillabough Centre. The monthly charge by Loraas is $4,024 per month to empty 15 bins twice a week, with an additional $35 per bin if additional pickups are needed.

The amount has been adjusted annually according to the Consumer Price Index, said Town Administrator Sheryl Ballendine.

The waste and recycling review may indicate the possibility of the Town moving to a mandatory recycling scheme like North Battleford’s, in which residents are

issued blue recycling bins in addition to the black refuse bins to be picked up on alternate weeks.

Currently, the town collects the garbage from the black bins once a week and, according to the season, compost from the green bins available for purchase by town residents. (A new garbage truck worth $260,000 replaced the 2003 vehicle this year.)

Since 2011, Battleford residents have also had the option of signing up with Loraas to have their own blue bins picked up every other week.

RCMP received several reports shortly after 6 a.m.

Wednesday of a black bear seen in the area of St. Laurent Drive.

The animal was located a short time later having taken shelter in a tree along Territorial Drive East near St. Laurent Drive. Police say the bear was contained and Conservation Officers were called in to assist.

The bear was successfully tranquillized and removed from the city and appears to be unharmed and in good health.

It’s Father’s Day weekend. We’ll be firing up the grill and paying a little extra attention to the men in our lives.

It’s interesting that there is so much emotion and sentimentality associated with Mother’s Day, but not so much on the day set aside to honour fathers. That’s probably because most men prefer it that way. For them emotion is something to be tamped down and tucked away for contemplation when no one is watching.

Hands-on, emotionally-involved fathers are a rare item in some segments of society, so those who are deserve to be revered, if not in mushy terms, at least with sincerity.

So take some time out this weekend to think about how your father’s influence has molded your life, or how a young father is molding the lives of his young children.

My dad, gone 10 years, was essentially a single parent long before such a notion was common, especially for a man. I learned many things from him, but the most useful core philosophy of “don’t sweat the small stuff” has been his most enduring legacy. It is a solid foundation for life, marriage and motherhood. Thanks, Dad.

Why not dugout canoes or animal skin kayaks?

Protestors in Seattle have a knack for irony.

Several weeks ago a swarm of protestors in kayaks protested the presence of an offshore drilling rig in the port, one operated

by Royal Dutch Shell. The rig is destined for work in Alaska’s Chukchi Sea, in the arctic.

Now, the idea of producing oil offshore in the arctic, where there is next to zero ability to respond to a spill, is not the brightest, I will grant you. But the protestors do not appear to be the brightest, either.

Those kayakers were again in their plastic or fibreglass boats. Most were wearing synthetic materials for clothes. I am pretty sure all their life jackets were also synthetic, i.e. made from petrochemicals.

It’s not that these protestors didn’t have a choice.

They could have burned the centre out of old growth trees, creating large dugout canoes that are prevalent along the British Columbia

Eastend’s gain, B’fords’ loss Dear Editor Over this last weekend, the community lost two valuable citizens, Barb and Dean Bauche, formerly of 82 - 1st Ave. West in Battleford. They have moved to Eastend.

Barb served on the town committee that planned the Trans Canada Trail used by many citizens. This is but one example of her activities.

Dean is very well known as an artist, former director of the Allen Sapp Gallery, educator, and his involvement in the Opera House restoration project in Battleford.

Sometimes trivial things make the news, sometimes stories are not told.

This one needs to be acknowledged.

From the photos and videos I have seen, I don’t think any of those protestors made those choices.

You see, instead of hunting the seals, preparing their hides, and stitching them together into a vessel that will hopefully remain watertight, they just went down to the local store and bought a fibreglass kayak.

Fibreglass includes a resin, made from petro-

chemicals. That’s the stuff the drilling rig is meant to produce.

But don’t worry about that, Mr. Protestor. It’s okay to drink your fair-trade coffee, imported by bunkerfuel powered ships made of steel (which is made with coking coal) while waiting for your protest to begin.

And those plastic chairs sitting outside the coffee shop, with its vinyl awning, should hold your righteous arse up the proper distance from the paved street where you parked your SUV. One needs an SUV with a proper roof rack to haul the kayak, remember? Someone forgot to include a roof rack on the old grey mare feeding in the back 40.

And while sipping this fair-trade coffee in a plastic go-cup, one should also feel just fine about texting on their cellphone “designed in California,” and manufactured in perhaps questionable conditions in China.

But all is well, since the plastic and rubber case on said cellphone will protect it if dropped on the asphaltpaved street while deploying a nylon umbrella to fend off the Seattle rains. Just pick it up and put it in the pocket of your rayon shirt made by child labour in a Bangladesh factory that may or may not collapse on its workers this week.

If you do fall out of your fibreglass kayak, be sure to protest the production of the jet fuel used to power the composite-built helicopter hovering overhead to pull you out of the water. I’m sure the rescue diver who jumps in after you won’t need that rubber dry-suit, after all.

If someone wishes to protest, perhaps they should actually practice just one iota of what they preach.

Small town springs up in exhibition grounds

Nearly 200 RVs were parked around the Battlefords Agricultural Society exhibition grounds over the weekend, all members of the Good Sam Club.

Every year, members from 17 different chapters around the province get together and spend a weekend reacquainting themselves with old friends from past years.

Good Sam Saskatchewan provincial director Jim Brady says the weekend is held in smaller communities every year for an obvious reason.

“We prefer small towns because the cities are too costly for us, too busy for

us and they really don’t want us hauling 200 RVs through the city,” he explained. “But we don’t mind that. It gives us a chance to explore other areas of Saskatchewan. Last year we were in Foam Lake, next year we’re going to Outlook.”

As you might imagine, there are some necessities when having a large number of RVs in such a small area.

“A lot of communities will send us letters inviting us to come,” Brady said.

“When you get 200 units there’s a lot of parking involved, a lot of members require power or want power so we need a facility that can handle that.”

“I’ve lived here all my life, up in the Northeastern corner, Melfort and Tisdale area,” Brady said.

“I didn’t realize how many different things there was to do here in the Battlefords area, so I was pleasantly surprised. This is what we’re trying to promote, what our province has to offer. We don’t have a lot of Americans, but we do have a lot from Manitoba and Alberta.”

It also offers an opportunity for those with RVs who don’t get to use them often, to come out and enjoy the time together.

“I’ve had people tell me they almost had to sell their rig before they joined

us because they never had time or a place to use it,” Brady said.

The four-day event consists of a number of activities. From golf to beanbag baseball to RV maintenance seminars, there’s always ways for those who make the trip to stay busy.

“Each day we have a hospitality meeting with coffee and cookies,” said Gerry Byers, head of the Saskatoon chapter. “There are RCMP presentations, Native American dancers, STARS presentations, craft seminars, jam sessions, pancake breakfasts, banquets, golf tournaments and raffles.”

Members of each chapter also get together once a month, weather permitting, to stay up to date on future events.

Health statistics show helmets prevent injuries and save lives Staff The recent Emergency Services Bike Rodeo event at the Civic Centre attracted enthusiastic children interested in testing their bicycling skills.

The children were quizzed on safety and their bicycles and wheels were tested as well. While the experience was a fun one for the children who took part, there was a serious undertone.

The reality is that cycling accidents do happen and are a leading cause of injury and it’s never too early to learn about the proper things people need to do when using a bike. A big issue identified by the volunteers participating was the need for people to get in the habit of using bicycle helmets when they use a bike.

Prairie North Health Region has provided a sobering list of statistics from various sources illustrating the issue. Those are listed below and serve as a reminder about the need to stay safe on the road and follow proper safety procedures: • In Saskatchewan between 1995 and 2004, 1,058 children under age 19 were hospitalized with cycling injuries. One of every three of these children suffered a head injury. (Saskatchewan Health, 2007) • Children between 10 and 19 have the highest rate of hospitalization from cycling-related head and other injuries compared to

all other age groups. (Saskatchewan Health, 2007) • Children under 19 counted for over half (63 per cent) of cycling-related hospitalizations in Saskatchewan between 1995 and 2004. (Saskatchewan Health, 2007) • Four of five cyclingrelated deaths in Saskatchewan are associated with head injuries. (Saskatchewan Health, 2007) • Eight children in Saskatchewan under age of 20 died between 1995 and 2004 due to cycling injuries.(Saskatchewan Health, 2007) This counted for almost half of all cyclingrelated deaths in Saskatchewan. (Saskatchewan Health, 2007) • In 2009, Saskatchewan was rated poor on bicycle helmet legislation. (Canadi-

BTEC makes pitch to City

Avenue and a fundraising campaign is underway, with a goal of raising $2.3 million within the community for the project.

Gabruch called the project “worthwhile for the community.” The new building would be close to the downtown and would mean the “continuation of a tradition in our community that’s gone on a lot of years.”

He said the committee had “scoured the community” for support and funding requests had gone before the Town of Battleford and surrounding RMs. One RM has committed already for a five-year period, Gabruch said.

Battleford contribution was made Monday. Instead it will come back for a vote at their next full council meeting June 22.

The tender has gone out for the BTEC project and they are waiting for the province to give their blessing in order for that to be awarded.

Gabruch indicated construction could begin in mid-July.

A sod-turning ceremony at their Railway Avenue and 105th Street location is scheduled for June 24.

Gabruch told the committee Monday that a couple of funding announcements are planned for that event as well which will bring them “very close” to their fundraising goal.

Commitment to BTEC approved

Battleford town council voted in favour of supporting the Battlefords Trade and Education Centre’s new building to the tune of $50,000 at Monday’s regular council meeting.

A motion was made following the receipt of a letter from Rob Rongve and Heath Gabruch, co-chairs of the BTEC fundraising effort, to approve the request for support in the amount of $5,000 per year for 10 years.

The “My Community Cares” fundraising campaign has been working toward raising the community portion of the cost to replace BTEC’s 100-year-old building in Riverview with a new facility at Railway Avenue

and 105th Street in North Battleford.

North Battleford council has also received a request for a donation to the BTEC building fund. They were asked last week for a donation of $10,000 a year annually, running for 10 years, in line with a similar donation made to Battlefords Boys and Girls Club for their new building project. But councillors said they need additional information before they decide on the request.

Meanwhile, a groundbreaking ceremony for the new building has been planned for June 24 at 10 a.m. at the new site. Construction is expected to start shortly thereafter.

BTEC provides programming and services to members of the community living

with disabilities, assisting them in the pursuit of independence and quality of life.

The new facility will allow

an additional 30 participants to take part, stated Rongve and Heath in their letter to Battleford town councillors.

The “Future home of BTEC” sign on 105th Street and South Railway has been updated in anticipation of a June 24 sod-turning when My Community Cares organizers say more big announcements will be made.

Building permits up in May

Conversation to centre on art installation Staff An art installation honouring the lives of missing and murdered indigenous women of Canada and the United States is due to be exhibited at North Battleford’s Chapel Gallery from Jan. 15 to Feb. 7, 2016, and the community is already preparing for its arrival.

The first of a series of community conversations is scheduled for Thursday, June 18 at 7 p.m. at the gallery, where the memorial exhibition will be introduced and potential activities related to the exhibition will be discussed.

Walking With Our Sisters is a massive commemorative art installation made up of more than 1,763 pairs of moccasin vamps (tops) plus 108 pairs of children’s vamps. The large collaborative art piece is being made available to the public through selected galleries and locations and has been on tour since 2013 with booking into 2019.

The work exists as a floor installation made up of beaded vamps arranged in a winding path formation on fabric and includes cedar boughs. Viewers remove their shoes to walk on a path of cloth alongside the vamps.

To create the installation, a general call was put out to all “caring souls” who

Numbers from the City of North Battleford and Town of Battleford indicated more good news in building permits for the month of May. There were nine permits issued that month in North Battleford for $2,931,900, compared to 12 issued for $1,154,000 the previous May. Among the highlight was one new commercial permit for $1.5 million and one commercial alteration for $1,066,000. The commercial permit was for the strip mall development on 114th Street and the Co-op expansion represented the other.

There was also one new dwelling permit for $263,000. The remaining permits included one new

Each pair of vamps represents one missing or murdered indigenous woman. The unfinished moccasins represent the unfinished lives of the women whose lives were cut short. The children’s vamps are dedicated to children who never returned home from residential schools. Together the installation represents all these women, paying respect to their lives.

In addition to the moccasin tops, 60 songs were submitted for the audio portion of the exhibit. Those songs are heard while audiences experience the exhibit.

At Thursday’s meeting, there will be an opportunity to sign up to volunteer as participants in upcoming events. Volunteers are also encouraged to join at any time by contacting the City of North Battleford’s galleries director Leah Garven at sapp@accesscomm.ca.

Through May 2015 the overall building permit picture is a healthy one, with 46 permits issued so far for $11,763,900. That compares to 35 permits for $16,982,700 for the same period last year.

The numbers were presented in a written report to the Planning Committee on Monday. It was also the final report to council prepared

by City Building Inspector Jerry Wintonyk prior to his retirement at the end of this month.

Over in Battleford, there was a drop off in permit values compared to the previous May, but it was still an active month with six permits issued for $592,200, compared to seven for

$1,160,000 for the same period last year.

The permits include one new residential for $350,000, three renovations for $26,200, one mobile home for $130,000 and one industrial renovation for $86,000.

Overall in Battleford there have been 19 permits issued for $2,935,219 through May, compared to 16 for $9,398,100 for the same period in 2014.

In addition to the May numbers, town council received an update on the latest permits for June that include one for a detached garage at $23,000, a rear deck for $10,000 and a single detached dwelling for $550,000.

The Battleford numbers were presented at a council meeting Monday.

UPAR unpopular with school divisions

The City of North Battleford’s new base tax to address needed underground pipe and asphalt replacement has local school divisions concerned. Unlike other municipal taxes, UPAR was implemented with the intent to tax even exempt properties such as school divisions and churches.

Living Sky School Division, Light of Christ Catholic School Division and École Père Mercure of the Conseil Ecole Fransaskoise have all met with the City over the controversial tax and now Living Sky has passed its concern on to local MLAs. Larry Doke, MLA for Cut Knife-Turtleford, and Randy Weekes, MLA for Biggar, met with the Living Sky board of education last week where the special tax was first on the agenda of things to discuss.

Living Sky board chair Ken Arsenault said they are in touch with the Saskatchewan School Board Association’s lawyers for legal clarification. The board wanted the MLAs to be aware they believe the City may be misinterpreting the appropriate legislation or using a loophole that allows them to tax school property.

If there is a loophole, said Arsenault, they would like

the MLAs to work to change the legislation.

While the school division and the City have a good working relationship, said Arsenault, the board is prepared for a legal challenge and has told the City exactly that.

“We just reiterated we were going to be firm and fast on our position that they were circumventing the legislation as we read it, and they were firm and fast on their position that they were reading the legislation properly,” said Arsenault. “We left it at that.”

Their impression, however, is the City will be going ahead and the three per cent they plan to charge is just a

starting point on the way to five or six per cent.

Since the school officials met with the City, the Living Sky board has received a letter from Mayor Ian Hamilton stating school divisions and otherwise exempt properties will not be charged for the UPAR program in 2015.

However, the mayor added, “we must advise that as the City works through this process, that should underground or street work be required in front of exempt property, that the City will be charging this work as local improvement.”

ongoing annual frontage tax is a concern both philosophically and fiscally.

“This really just seems like taxing twice,” said Director of Education Randy Fox. “We operate on taxpayers dollars, and then we would be asked to take those taxpayers dollars and pay them as another tax to the City.”

Lonny Darroch, Living Sky’s chief financial officer, said a rough estimate of the three per cent tax would mean, potentially, $66,000 per year.

Part of the reason for discussing it with the MLAs, said Fox, was to let them know the issue is out there.

“It almost seems like

the City has shifted gears for now, but I wouldn’t be surprised that it will come back, and I think it’s important government understand … sooner or later it’s going to come to that [provincial] level.”

Arsenault said if a special tax that includes exempt property can be allowed by legislation it could spread across the entire school division, and perhaps throughout the province.

Vice-chair Ronna Pethick said a similar situation is happening with Prairie Valley School Division and the Town of Pilot Butte.

“I know Prairie Valley have challenged it,” said Pethick, who is also the vice-president of the Saskatchewan School Boards Association. “What we fear is that this will go provincewide. If there’s success, cities and towns talk, it could go viral.”

Pethick said municipal taxation of school property affects students directly.

“Seventy-five per cent of our budget is the fixed cost of staffing, 25 per cent of our total is other educational costs for our students,” she

said. “I think it’s taxing kids, because the money has to come from somewhere and it comes directly out of instruction.”

Saulteaux students earn trip

Director Melvin Aisaican says Spencer Gopher, member of the Saulteaux First Nation Band Council, has been supportive of the school trip project and helped them meet their goals.

“There’s a saying, no child left behind,” says the director of Saulteaux Heritage School. “But at the same time kids need to know there is a consequence. They’ve got to work toward something.”

Melvin Aisaican says this is the concept behind 40 students earning a trip to Niagara Falls, Canada’s Wonderland and Toronto, Ont. The students are on their trip this week, having left June 14 by chartered van, and are due to return June 21. A dozen teachers are accompanying the Grade 4 through 8 students.

To earn their trip, says Aisaican, students worked to achieve three A’s– academics, attitude and attendance.

“We’ve seen the difference in the kids.”

The students also had to raise $40,000. This was done with the aid of the rest of the Pre-K through Grade 8 school, the community, parents and grandparents, sponsors and reserve leadership.

It brought them together as friends, she says.

One of the most popular fundraisers was taco in a bag.

“We sold a lot.”

Holden Katcheech, a Grade 7 student, says he took part in many fundraisers and was looking forward to the things he would learn on the trip.

Aisaican says their fundraisers, which started in September, included bingos, a golf tournament and a variety of taco sales.

“Indian tacos are a big seller on Saulteaux,” he laughs. “We even had people from the next reserve coming over and placing orders.”

helped with a variety of fundraising efforts.

“We had some major supporters such as Staples,” he adds.

North Battleford Staples general manager Faye Schlemmer delivered a $500 cheque last week.

“We know Melvin’s passion toward the school and his children and letting them learn is awesome,” says Schlemmer.

Staples has also supported numeracy and literacy nights at the school.

These events have been well attended by students and parents, said Aisaican.

The literacy nights have brought 2,500 books into the homes of Saulteaux First Nation.

Holden Katcheech points to the goal he and his fellow students met to make a trip to Niagara Falls possible.

“We’ve got lots of support in our schools from our consultants to our superintendents and on to our leadership,” says Aisaican, “and suppliers like Faye who believe in what we’re trying to do here at the school.”

Aisaican, who has been director for three and a half years, says Saulteaux Heritage School has three school goals– numeracy, literacy and retention. The school trip is part of the goal of retaining students, attendance being one of the three A’s children had to aspire to.

Teachers Tara Aisaican, Miranda Moccasin and Charlene Gopher-Swiftwolf have been the “brains” behind the project, says Aisaican. They have seen to all the details and were instrumental in deciding where to go.

Moccasin, one of five new teachers from Saulteaux recently hired to teach in their own community, says when she first started teaching she wanted to form a travel club as an incentive for students.

“Word got out and, the next thing, the travel club turned into the whole senior end going on a field trip.”

Coincidentally, Tara and Melvin had been to Niagara Falls on their honeymoon and had thought at the time what it wonderful place it would be to bring school students to. They’d learn science, history, geography and literacy all rolled into one.

When it turned out Moccasin and Swiftwolf had also thought of Niagara Falls as a destination, it was sealed.

The addition of a visit to Canada’s Wonderland and to the CN Tower in Toronto merely added to the excitement the students felt at the possibility of going on the trip.

Spencer Gopher, first time member of the Saulteaux First Nation Band Council, says, “I think this trip will be very beneficial for them. Some of them don’t get to leave the reserve and some only as far as North Battleford or Saskatoon.”

Aisaican says Gopher has been supportive of the project as a member of the band leadership.

“Our kids are always number one,” says Gopher, a power engineer student who went to a nomination meeting during a break from his practicum work at St. Walburg, and found himself being asked to run for office.

At the encouragement of his parents, he let his name stand and is now taking time off from his studies to hold several portfolios as a council member. (The 32-yearold is short on sleep, but, he laughs, “I’m young, I’m aggressive, a go-getter, I don’t give up.”)

The first trip isn’t even over and Saulteaux Heritage School is already planning a second. Next year they will probably travel to British Columbia. It will be a little less expensive, say the teachers, but just as educational and beautiful.

Aisaican says the Grade 3s are already benefiting, looking to the possibility of earning a trip when they become Grade 4 students.

First Nations schools, like all public schools, struggle with retention, says the director, which is why incentive projects like the Niagara Falls trip are so important.

“It gives them that little extra to get them kick started.”

Latos’ 13 strikeouts lead Blue Jays over Beavers

The North Battleford Beavers were looking to build off Sunday’s 14-10 win over the Macklin Lakers when the best team in the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League came to town.

Blue Jays pitcher Steve Latos made sure that didn’t happen.

Latos threw a complete game allowing just two hits and one run (unearned) while striking out 13 Beavers batters.

The Blue Jays had many two-out rallies in Tuesday’s game, including in the opening inning of the game.

After Matt Nielsen bounced into a fielder’s choice to put him on first with two outs, Latos and Clayton Ermel hit back-toback singles to drive him in and give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead.

The bottom of the first was a sign of things to come for the Beavers as they went down with two groundouts and a strikeout.

The Blue Jays added another run in the second, again with two outs. After Jason Fechter struck out and Reuben Baker grounded out, Jesse Stansfield singled and stole second.

Kurri Carlson then tripled to the right centre field gap to make it 2-0 Blue Jays.

Landon Noyes struck out to end the inning.

Once again, the Beavers were held hitless in the bottom half of the inning, as Rory Gregoire grounded to short and Brandon Gregoire and Ryan Mayers struck out swinging to end the inning.

Keeping with the pattern, the Blue Jays scored another run with two outs in the third inning. A lead -off ground out followed by a double, ground out and single scored Latos to give the Blue Jays a 3-0 lead.

Latos was at his best in the third inning as he struck out the side with Derrick Chapman and Jordan Sass going down swinging and Dion Tederoff looking.

Miller was able to shut down the Blue Jays offence for the first time in the game. After giving up a two-out double to Carlson, Miller got Noyes to fly out to centre to end the inning.

The Beavers finally got their first hit in the bottom of the fourth when Kyle Palmer hit a single up the middle to end Latos’ perfect game bid with two outs in the inning. Rory Gregoire struck out to end the inning after.

In the fifth the Blue Jays scored a pair of runs to extend their lead to five.

Ermel singled home Latos and Fechter doubled with two outs to score Ermel.

Latos was up to his old tricks in the bottom of the fifth as he sat down the Beavers in order.

Miller bounced back with a strong sixth inning, allowing just a leadoff single to Stansfield before retiring the next three batters to keep the score 5-0.

The Beavers finally solved Latos in the sixth.

After Sass and Tederoff struck out to start the inning, Bryce Gatzke reached on an error and Tyler Russel was hit by a pitch to put two men on with two out for Palmer.

Palmer picked up his second hit of the game, driving Gatzke home to get the Beavers on the board.

The Blue Jays got

the run back in the top of the seventh as Miller seemingly lost command of his pitches. After hitting Latos to start the inning, he walked Ermel, struck out Tanner Goulet, hit Fechter and walked Stansfield to bring in a run to make it 6-1.

The Beavers got a man on base with one out after Mayers walked, but that’s all they could muster as the final two batters struck out to end the game.

Latos’ final line read seven innings, 13 strikeouts, one run (unearned) on two walks and two hits.

The Blue Jays improved to 7-1 on the season while the Beavers dropped to 2-5.

Other scores from Tuesday had Lloydminster over Midwest 14-2, Wilkie over Unity 4-0 and Edam over Mervin 8-7.

Standard Hill travels to Macklin Wednesday, while Thursday has three games scheduled with Unity at Border City, Mervin in Standard Hill and St. Walburg visiting Edam.

Weekend games see Meadow Lake in St. Walburg Friday and Mervin and North Battleford in Meadow Lake Sunday.

The Beavers don’t play at Beaver Lions Stadium again until Monday, July 6 when they welcome the Mervin Flyers.

Cross-sport arguing is a complete waste of time Late last week, Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman stirred up some controversy over his Twitter account.

Stop me if you’ve heard that about a celebrity before.

“I’m more convinced than ever that NO athletes have to be more mentally prepared than football players. Back me up 12s! (Seahawks fans)” he posted Friday morning.

This wasn’t the first time Sherman has been at the centre of attention, as after the Seahawks’ NFC Championship win over the San Francisco 49ers in 2013, during a post game interview Sherman said, “Well I’m the best corner in the game! When you try me with a sorry receiver like Crabtree, that’s the result you’re going to get!”

Sherman deflected what would have been a gamewinning touchdown pass to Michael Crabtree.

Sherman was also at the centre of attention, although in a much different light, after the Seahawks lost to the New England Patriots in last year’s Superbowl. His reaction to Russell Wilson’s last-second interception was subject to plenty of Internet trolls and jokes.

Perhaps expectedly, Sherman’s tweet Friday resulted in a number of athletes from other sports chiming in with their opinion.

“Hey @RSherman_25 I have less than half a second to make a decision. Have to lock in. Baseball fans back me up,” said Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista.

In short, every athlete believes their sport is the most difficult, and for good reason. These guys spend their entire lives working towards becoming the best in their sport so only they know how difficult it really is.

I for one think comparing the rigors of different sports to be pointless. Each sport is difficult in it’s own way, whether it’s physically like hockey or football or mentally like golf.

It’s like the age-old argument over which sport has the toughest athletes or which sport is the most difficult to excel in. Every sport is different.

Football players are hit as hard as can be every minute or so. Hockey players get hit and have to stay on their feet while balancing

on a tiny blade. Basketball players have to muscle their way to the hoop and get the ball in a basket. Baseball players have a split-second to decide whether they’re going to swing at a pitch or not.

Then there are the counter arguments. Football players play only once a week. Hockey players are on the ice for less than a minute at a time. Baseball players don’t even need to be in peak physical condition to excel. Basketball players don’t get hit, punched or fight.

Sports are hard, there’s a reason the best athletes in each sport play at the highest level possible. I remember trying to play tennis once during college and I felt like it was legitimately impossible. Every time I hit the ball it would either go straight into the net or 50 feet over it. During a “non-contact” football game I got my bell rung trying to prevent a touchdown. I put non-contact in quotation marks because it was 15, 20-something aged guys playing. Obviously there was going to be contact. I played a two-on-two basketball game at the field house a few months ago and making shots just playing around was hard enough, let alone with somebody guarding you at all times.

There’s no point in arguing over which sport is the most difficult because the truth is they’re all difficult.

There’s a reason only a few athletes have ever been able to play two different professional sports. Those guys were born with God-given talent. It takes so much dedication to excel at one sport, there’s no time to work at another.

Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission lawyer Meghan Scherger was the guest speaker at the annual Living Sky School Division Student Hall of Fame dinner and awards celebration held in Battleford Arena June 11.

Scherger’s speech to the more than 700 students, parents and teachers at the awards night focused on encouraging students to become informed and engaged citizens. During her talk, it was clear Scherger is passionate about citizenship education, which she views as an antidote to disengagement from formal politics and volunteerism, as well as to political extremism.

Drawing on her experience with the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission, Scherger explained human rights complaints can, in most cases, ultimately be resolved through litigation and/or mediation. Another avenue open to the Human Rights Commission to prevent or correct discrimination is advocacy — lobbying governments to change laws and companies to change their policies.

The fourth pillar to resolving human rights complaints, Scherger said, is citizenship education. “Citizenship education,” she told the students, “is where you come in.” After all, the best solution is to stop discrimination from happening in the first place.

Scherger taught her audience the “new” three Rs, after posing the question, “What does it mean to be a Canadian?” An engaged Canadian citizen should

understand his or her rights and responsibilities as a citizen and respect the rights of others.

To achieve that goal, Scherger expanded on the four Es of citizenship.

She encouraged students to be enlightened citizens so they can make educated decisions.

To be enlightened, citizens need to be engaged, the second E. They need to choose to educate themselves and to not be blind to issues.

In discussing ethical citizenship, Scherger told the students, “You won’t regret standing up for what you know is right.

The final E of citizenship, according to Scherger, is empathetic citizenship.

She spoke about philanthropy, and noted it doesn’t always have to be monetary.

You can also use “your skills and talents to make the world a better place.”

Scherger practises what she preaches. She has been a volunteer teacher and

board member with the Heart of the City Piano Program, which offers lessons to inner-city students across Canada.

A former Living Sky School Division student herself, Scherger, then Meghan Seidle, graduated from Medstead Central School in 2005. She went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts, with a major in sociology and a law degree. After working with a private sector law firm in Saskatoon, Scherger joined the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission in May, 2014.

STEPHEN: Dale “Fraser” Stephen passed away on June 5, 2015, at the Battlefords Union Hospital at the age of 66 years.

Celebration of Life Service was held on June 11, 2015, at the Battlefords Funeral Service Garden Chapel at 7:30 pm. The Eulogy was read and prepared by Fraser’s Grandson Jarett Biondo.

For a grade 11 English project, I chose to write a Biography on the most important person in my life, my Grandpa Fraser. I always enjoyed listening to the stories of Grandpa’s past, and consider myself very fortunate to have been able to learn as much about him as I did and to have such a great role model in my life. Over dozens of coffees and countless hours, this is his life’s story: My Grandpa Fraser was born on July 17, 1948 in a little town in southwest Manitoba, into a large family with 7 sisters and 5 brothers. Grandpa was a hardworking man, and these habits began early. He recalled waking up at 5:00 am each morning since the age of 6 to milk all the cows on the farm, never earning an allowance. Grandpa walked a mile to school each day at Grenfell, SK. His parents had always strongly encouraged him to pursue his education; however he was always eager to work and moved out of his parents’ home to do so at the age of 14. At this point he began work for a farmer, earning just $20 per week.

He continued with his schooling until he failed grade 8, and then began focusing solely on work. Later on, with a great deal of dedication he completed his grade 12 education and attended college to become a trained diesel engine technician. However, he soon learned that he had allergies that would not allow him to pursue this career. Fraser always had an appreciation for his parents and all that they were able to teach him. There were often struggles that he had to live through, being part of such a large family, and considering his father was working a low income job. Grandpa, being the optimist he was, would make the best of these situations by going out hunting with his dog “Rusty”. In his early years he also enjoyed to play baseball, and was really quite good at it. With a lot of hard work and saving, Fraser found himself his first vehicle - a 1946 international van that was converted from a dump truck. It may have not been the most glorious vehicle, but it was something that he could call his own, and he was proud to call it so. Grandpa recalls that during this time, gas was just 5 cents per litre - it really was a different world back then. My Grandpa was a real ladies man back in his prime. Back then, a date for him consisted of an evening out on the town, dancing and enjoying a few drinks - this is how he actually met his wife, at a school dance. If Fraser wasn’t out pursuing the ladies, guaranteed you could find him out partying with his buddies. Fraser never lost sight of his family and what was most important to him, though. Each Sunday without fail he would go with his family to church, out for ice cream, and for an afternoon drive. Fraser was a man who has been everywhere and done just about everything. He spent years working in Calgary, earning his way mowing lawns and hauling cargo with his converted truck. Once in North Battleford, one of his proudest accomplishments was pouring concrete for and welding the ladders on the Cargill elevator, because as he told me: “the damn welder couldn’t do it himself”. He showed his reliable character while working for G&C Asphalt for 13 years, and being late only once. He was someone that you could truly depend on. Grandpa later worked for EZ Enterprises hauling water up at Fort Mac and later working as a mechanic in the shop.

After much persuasion, Fraser finally admitted that he was of retirement age and pursued his dream career to become the world’s finest greens keeper at the North Battleford golf course. Fraser spent his last years living in the town of Battleford, spending as much time as he possibly could with his grandchildren. He enjoyed gardening, golfing, playing on his tire swing, and going for coffee with his family and friends. He was someone who enjoyed the simple things in life and we will forever remember him in that way.

We would like to send a special Thank You to Bob MacKay and the entire staff at Battlefords Funeral Service for their kindness and attention to detail. Thank you to Rev. Nora Borgeson of Battlefords United Church for an amazing service and to Joan Harrison for the wonderful music. A Special Thanks to Fraser’s grandchildren who shared such special memories at the service: Shandi Biondo, Jarett Biondo, Cortni Millhouse, and ShaeLynne Zyznomirski. We extend our sincerest gratitude for all that attended the service and who shared in his life.

Celebration of life service for Mrs. Nellie Armstrong will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. from the Turtle Lake Mission, Livelong, Saskatchewan with Pastor Ben Boutwell officiating. Interment to follow after the reception in the Livelong Cemetery. Urn Bearer is grandson Clifford Olson and Lois Cooke (pianist) accompanied Jan Cooke and Darlene Wood (soloists) in singing Whispering Hope. Congregational songs will be “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” and “When the Roll is Called Up Yonder”. Honorary Pallbearers are Roy Eaket, Ramona Eaket, Betty Holmes, Blake Johnson, Gerry Olson, Art Jorgenson and everyone else who shared in her life. OBITUARIES RENZ: Mr. Arthur Renz of Glaslyn, Saskatchewan passed away on Friday, May 29, 2015 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan at the age of 72 years. A Celebration of Life Service was held for Arthur on Monday, June 8, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. from the Glaslyn Community Hall with Reverend Donald Skinner officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date. Left to cherish Arthurs memory are his daughter, Charlotte (Corey); grandchildren, Logan and Emalie; brother, Erwin (Dianna); sister, Ruth (Darrel); nieces and nephews, Teralea, Shelly (Gary), Lorrie (Arnold), Kevin, Jeff (Brenda), Sheila (Neal), Nadine (Thomas), Pamela (Sam); 7 great nieces and 11 great nephews; 2 great great nieces and 7 great great nephews; aunts, Edna Herman and Ida (Bob) McQuine; and his special friend, Melvina Lewis and her children, Johnny (Bridgette), Vernelle (Dorthea), Laureen (Bradley) and her grandchildren Clarice, Abbigail, Redon, Chase, Hayley and Hayden. Memories of Arthur Arthur Renz was born March 23, 1943 at the Renz family homestead in the Belbutte district. He was the 3rd of 5 children born to Arnold and Freida Renz. As a child Art worked alongside the family on the farm picking stones, running the cream separator, and making stukes of grain. He attended Stoke school for 4 years and then finished his grades at the Belbutte School. He stayed on the farm with his parents for a few years and then ventured down south to work for a farmer around the Swift Current area. He wasn’t there long when he decided to move to Glaslyn and he went to work at L & M Wood Products. On March 3, 1969 he married Florence Locke and they soon welcomed their first daughter Tammy Leah. Shortly after Tammy passed away they decided to venture out to Fernie B.C. where Art went to work at a sawmill running a slat machine.

During their couple of years in Fernie their second daughter Charlotte Ann was born. In 1972 they moved back to Glaslyn and he went back to work at L & M Wood Products where during his 40+ years he worked at the peeler, bucking station, and the planer. He was a very dedicated employee. He never missed a day unless he was extremely sick. He always showed up to work a 1/2 hour early and was ready to drink coffee and smoke cigarettes. He is the only man we knew that could light a cigarette WITH A MATCH in the middle of a hurricane wind. Arts nickname in his younger years was Arthur Fonzarelli or Fonzie. I’m not sure what started the nickname…if it was the hair slicked back, or something to do with his wild side but either way the name stuck around for many years.

For those who got to know him well they knew he had a good sense of humour. He always liked to tease or enjoyed a good joke.

That is unless it was his nephew throwing a sawdust filled snowball down the back of his shirt while at work. He didn’t see the humor in that like everyone else did. Art was very meticulous when it came to his vehicles. Not long ago he sold his old Red car to a couple of local kids. Every time he saw Emalie he would ask “Are those kids still driving my car?” and “Are they taking good care of it?”. Emalie would always ensure him that they were. Little did he know they named his old car the “Arthropod”. Though he may have never said it out loud we knew Arts pride and joy was his family. He looked forward to Renz family get togethers and Sunday suppers with Charlotte and her family. He also became an excellent caregiver for Melvina. She needed help and he enjoyed the company, so the two of them became the perfect match. He spent lots of time in North Battleford with her and her family and became close to them all. During his retirement he enjoyed tinkering in his yard, growing a garden full of potatoes, driving around town, and visiting with his friends. He even learnt to cook. After years of having no luck finding himself a “COOK” and eating at the local restaurants he decided to teach himself. And a good cook he was. During the last two months he had went through more than anyone should ever have to endure. It was during these times we realized just how strong of a man he really was. He showed strength and love until the end. We are grateful to have spent so much time with him during this last chapter of her life. His memory will live on in all of us forever. After a vet visit we also found out that he was shot at one point in his life. He is super gentle and super sweet. He seems to get along well with other dogs and doesn’t seem to mind cats either. The Battlefords Tribal Council provides Aboriginal Courtworker Services under contract with the Government of Saskatchewan (Dept of Justice) to court points in North Battleford and Cut Knife.

We currently have one opening for one (1) full-time aboriginal courtworker.

Incumbents will be required to attain the following objectives: - To assist Aboriginal accused to understand their rights, options and responsibilities including court procedures before the criminal courts.

- To provide counseling, information and referral services to Aboriginal adults charged with criminal offenses and youth alleged to have committed criminal offences or quasi-criminal offences under provincial statutes.

- To reduce the cultural and linguistic barriers between Aboriginal accused and those involved in the administration of justice.

- To assist in enhancing the awareness and appreciation of those involved in the criminal justice system to Aboriginal traditions, values, customs, languages and socio-economic conditions.

- To increase the use of culturally sensitive alternative measures by providing information on sentencing alternatives appropriate to the circumstances of the accused.

- To liaison and build a network of resources through partnerships with other community agencies who may assist the accused and those who come into contact with the accused.

- To give priority to services for first and second time offenders.

Mandatory qualifications and attributes include: - A valid driver’s license, dependable vehicle and a willingness to travel.

- A comprehensive knowledge of, and sensitivity towards, Aboriginal cultures.

- Strong oral and written communication skills - The ability to develop and deliver effective presentations.

- Highly dependable with an ability to work effectively without supervision.

Preference will be given to candidates who have attained a degree from an accredited justice related program and/or related experience.

Need more help with cemetery cleanup

Baljennie community and cemetery held their annual cleanup at the cemetery grounds for the first time June 3. The grass was mowed and cleaned up around the gravesites. The Custer family had cleaned up a few weeks ago where their family plots are. Due to so many busy farmers still working on the land, old age and people not well we get hardly any help anymore. Many others have passed away or moved on to new areas. It is hard to get the younger people to help.

Seems all the communities are going the same way.

John and Lois Syhut of Sonningdale were recent visitors with Stanley and Dorothy Mills.

Crops are slowly starting to come through the soil but it is too dry for anything much to grow. We need rain badly. We did get a few little showers in the afternoon and one in the night, but that was soon all soaked up.

There are a few farmers still finishing up seeding feed for their cattle to eat in the fall. There are some farmers having to reseed canola fields after one night of frost. Some crops are up high enough as well as the weeds and they are spraying for bugs and grasshoppers.

There is an outbreak of tent caterpillars on wild fruit and rose bushes, besides the areas that have the black forest caterpillars. They are mainly after the poplar tree leaves. So far there are none in our area. They do make a mess of the lush green bush-

aljennie es. The leaves will regenerate but it is a real setback for all trees and with it so dry, they will have a struggle staying alive. They have not been about for a few years.

We love our native trees.

There has been a high population of dandelions and they seem to be everywhere. Now all the fluff is flying about, more seeds for next year’s crop. Every garden, yard, pasture and field have them. Other areas, leafy spurge has started up as well as hawksbeard, plus many other kinds of weeds.

They are getting harder and

harder to control as the years go by, besides that, how many new weeds have we got growing?

Lizard Lake community pasture spent a busy few days taking in the summer pasturing cows and their calves. Many pastures have cattle in them. In spite of the dryness the grass is holding its own, so far. There is plenty of water for the cattle.

They do need a good rain like all the rest of us.

There has been plenty of wildlife about. The big northern forest fires have driven the black bears to different areas. Some have been sighted north of here, so far nothing here that we know of, but just be aware of them about. Keep an eye out if you are walking alone. There just could be one eyeing you up that you

didn’t notice. Don’t get between a mama bear and her cub. Things can happen fast.

Keep in mind, never run from a bear or climb a tree.

Bears are ever so swift and can climb a tree just as fast as you run, just back away slowly to some protection.

The bear’s eyesight is not so

great. Bears are nearsighted.

The bear’s diet consists of lush grasses and roots plus insects, berries and honey when they can find it. They have to be pretty hungry to come after people. One never knows. So try to be careful out in the woods and forest.

Grade 7 students from Light of Christ Catholic Schools in North Battleford took part in the Skills Canada Cardboard Boat Race June 2. This year more than 100 LOCCS students had the opportunity to test their building and problem solving skills.

In teams, the students designed, constructed and raced a cardboard boat across the Battlefords Coop Aquatic Center swimming pool. Students had to adhere to strict rules and regulations. Heather Hockbaum will be hanging her quilts in the Chapel Gallery in the beginning of July. Watch for dates.

Chris Hodge brought some pieces of creative metal artwork to show the members. It is great work, showing lots of patience and talent.

Sometimes rain or shine do not matter Ed, my old neighbour, told me last week that since I moved away the weather has been great.

He reports it is just one more thing that took a change for the better once I took off for the B.C. coast. The way Ed tells it, things are now so good that it does matter if the sun shines or if it rains, as it is all good. I’m glad my old neighbour is finding everything looking up after our departure. Our weather after we moved was some of everything — cloudy, cool, rainy, sunny and hot. Being near our daughter and her family in Washington State was so good the changing weather was just fine no matter if

it was rain or shine.

The weather always acts inconsiderately no matter where you are living. I helped my daughter with some landscaping for their front yard. They are to have their house painted and wanted to improve the street appeal of their house’s shrubs, hedges, lawn and flowerbeds. I offered to take on the project, but the weather went from cool and cloudy to sunny and hot as soon as I transplanted bedding plants, specifically flowers. It turned out to be the hottest day of the year to date, and it ushered in a week of blistering hot weather. Cool and wet is best for the transplanting

I have found that while travelling one may not have the luxury of worshipping in a congregation of one’s usual denomination. The number of churches nearby you when you are travelling and the service time may dictate

which church you attend.

In his years as a rabbi, Jesus went to the synagogue near him on the Sabbath.

Jesus, although he was the Son of God, took the time publicly to honour his Father in heaven. He considered the reading of God’s word and its discussion as needful and necessary.

Often Jesus demonstrated the power of God by healing those who needed help physically and by forgiving peoples’ sins for the care of their souls.

Jesus was concerned about both the spirit and the body of people as God’s Word proclaims.

Jesus often received criticism from other religious leaders for enacting or

practicing the word of God in his life and the lives of other people.

Other religious leaders were more concerned with talking about how wise and superior they were when it came to God. They had little concern for helping those in need, especially obvious sinners.

They were not concerned as Jesus was with the healing of the sick, the forgiving of sins or teaching to edify people in the love of God. Rain or shine, Jesus dedicated his life and death to loving sinners.

He brought God’s power to the needs of others. He humbled himself as a doer of God’s word as we are also all called to do.

CIB volunteers beautify the town

MAIDSTONE — Bingo was played at the Maidstone Drop In Centre June 3 with Joan and Shannon Smith doing the calling. The loonie pot was divided between Dorothy Kissick and Verla Mitchell. Bev Stewart provided lunch.

Cribbage was played June 8 with a perfect score for the afternoon going to Jean Hartman. Low went to Bev Stewart, who also provided lunch.

Denise Newton and Jean Hartman attended the Regional A meeting for SSAI in Lashburn May 7. There were about 39 people in attendance. Guests were greeted with muffins, cookies, coffee, tea and juice.

Couple celebrates 60th wedding anniversary

Congratulations to Curtis and Felicia Sutherland on the birth of their first child, a baby boy.

Charles Archer Sutherland was born June 11 and weighed seven pounds and 10 ounces at birth.

The Waseca Recreation Board hosted a barbecue at AG Foods in Maidstone June 5. Proceeds will go to community projects.

It is once again clear and sunny Monday morning. Although not a great amount, we appreciated the rain showers that fell each day for a few days. The rain was much needed.

Congratulations to Walter and Joyce Campbell who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary June 13. A come and go tea was held at their new home in Lloydminster and hosted by their family.

Walter and Joyce were married in the Waseca Anglican Church in the spring of 1955. They moved to the Battlevale District south of Waseca in 1961, along with their family of three, Sharon, Ross and

Barbara. The last number of years they have lived just north of Waseca. aseca They are now settled in their new home in News Lloydminster. We wish them many more years of good health and happiness in their new location.

Chuckwagon races are being enjoyed by many these days. Arlee Lumgair and Sandra Sutherland, accompanied by Jaco Coetzee, a trainee with Vic Holt, travelled to North Battleford June 7 to take in the races there. It was an enjoyable event, especially for Jaco, who really enjoyed this typically Canadian sport.

Ashley McFadyen was once again taking part in track and field at the provincials held in Yorkton June 5 and 6.

She placed very well and is to be congratulated on her efforts.

Ashley McFadyen and Josie Weisner were chosen to represent Maidstone High School at the National Student Leadership Conference to be held in Halifax in the fall. We will, no doubt, be hearing more about this event and wish Ashley and Josie all the best.

Besides being an active light horse club, members of the Reigning Riders 4-H Club are busy at other levels.

Member Keltye Blais is one of four youth delegates to sit on the youth advisory council. This is a position that allows Keltye to be the voice of all the Northwest 4-H members to the Saskatchewan 4-H board.

Rayna Yasieniuk is the North Battleford District No. 34 president. As president, Rayna decided to organize a District No. 34 fun day in North Battleford. Her idea was very popular and approximately 38 4-H members gathered at the Bowlar-

ena to go glow bowling May 8. It was a nice way to have members and parents from various clubs get together to get to know one another a little better and have fun.

The light horse members held a two-day barrel racing clinic at Hafford at the end of May. We had Ronda Sayers for our clinician.

Ronda is a local barrel racing and roping champion and role model, and all of us girls learned so much from having her out. Whether you follow the rodeo circuit or are a little Cloverbud, Ronda was able to share her knowledge, give guidance and ideas and explained everything in detail to all of the clinic participants. She taught us all so much!

The North Battleford 4-H Regional Show was the weekend after the clinic. It

was a beautiful day outside and the club had a blast. Everyone made a little money at the horse show, gymkhana and in the multiple show, but, more importantly, we all created some new friends and memories.

One great experience happened at the end of the day. We were lucky enough to have crossed paths with the people from Communities for Veterans, the Ride Across Canada Foundation.

They happened to be staying at the ag grounds while we were there.

After supper they gave an informative presentation on veterans and then some clubs presented them with donations, which they were very thankful for. After that we went back to their campsite and visited. We laughed, danced and played music

with them. We wished them safe travels as they continue their way, riding horses all the way to Newfoundland.

Next weekend the light horse girls will be in Hafford working to receive their certification of Equi-Health, Canada’s Equine Health and Emergency First Aid course.

Instruction will be given by Michelle Woodall.

We will be taught how to prepare, how to react and how to handle equine emergency situations while waiting for a vet to arrive. Vital signs, lacerations, colic, punctures, choke, casting, pain source ID and more will be covered.

Not to be outdone by the girls, our three boys, Ty, Lane, and Riley, who are in trapping and tracking, have also been busy. They hired an outfitter friend, Tyler

Boyle, for five separate outings. Before that they had Tyler take them muskrat trapping a couple of times.

Tyler is such a fun, wise and professional outfitter.

They learned a ton from him.

Tyler showed them signs of rodents such as muskrats, when to trap, how to trap and then how to clean, stretch, dry and sell the fur.

After muskrat season was snow goose hunting. Tyler explained about the spring hunt for snow geese and how the birds are over-grazing and irreversibly damaging the tundra. He told us all stories about the overpopulation of these birds and explained responsible conservation of such species.

One example is that to have a positive influence by this bird there should be two million of them, and right now

the population has exploded to approximately 14 million.

Besides destroying habitat, farmers’ crops may be damaged during their migration.

Due to the overabundance of these birds, they ended up having an extremely successful hunt.

Then Tyler suggested they try sturgeon fishing in the North Saskatchewan River. The boys met at the river with Tyler twice and again were taught so much.

Sturgeon fishing is a catch and release process, and Tyler again made their trips enjoyable and informative.

Riley was also able to attend a local 4-H archery shoot, and was the archery judge for the North Battleford Regional Show.

We think our club is really living the 4-H motto, “Learn to do by Doing.”

90th anniversary of United Church of Canada

Borden United Church held a come and go complimentary tea in the Borden Seniors’ Centre June 10 to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the United Church of Canada. On June 10, 1925, at 10:30 a.m., the Baptists, Methodists and Union Church signed an agreement and became the United Church of Canada.

All of the United churches across Canada were to ring bells 90 times to celebrate, but Borden Church decided to celebrate with the tea. A display table was set up showing how the United Church of Canada came to

The Borden Friendship Club held their June business meeting June 10 and then will have a break until the September meeting. There will be a potluck supper June 24 when the June and July birthdays will be recognized,

In conjunction with the Lions Club, Harold Empey will be invited to come in October to talk on “Just in Case” – an information night on how to prepare for a person’s death. Any profit from selling the binder with all the information will be given to the two clubs.

A motion was made that any member of the Friendship Club may attend the Langham Dinner Theatre, using the proceeds from the bingo held last winter. The date picked to go was Nov. 15 for the 1 p.m. dinner and show. Most of the costs will be covered, but there may be a nominal charge depending on how many go.

MAIDSTONE — Maidstone Museum village was a busy place June 11 and 12 when the Saskatchewan archeological caravan was here.

Heading the caravan was Kayleigh Speers from Winnipeg, Man. and Tasha Hodgson of Brandon, Man. These young women both attend Lakehead University at Thunder Bay, Ont. and are travelling with the caravan as their summer employment. These knowledgeable and pleasant young ladies will return to school in the fall.

The caravan’s display of hammerheads, arrowheads, bone scrapers and other tools used by the First Nation people was most inter-

esting. They had a number of hands-on activities for the more than 200 school children who came from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The public were invited to attend from 3 to 6 p.m. Some locals brought archeological articles to be assessed. These included arrowheads, petrified fish and rock with remains of shellfish imbedded in them.

The museum staff provided morning and evening meals both days. A small group of residents from Pine Island Lodge came and toured the village as all the buildings are wheelchair and walker accessible.

It was busy at the museum again June 15 when more than 50 children came to tour the museum village.

dren were from the Grade 3 and 4 classes at Poundmaker First Nation. Five local museum members acted as tour guides with teachers and helpers from both schools. Lots of questions were asked.

The former K-40s gathered at the museum June 15 for a potluck supper and social evening.

Two fun days for children ages five to 11 will be held at the museum over the summer holidays. The dates are July 23 and Aug. 14. These programs are sponsored by Rivers West Sports and Culture. Events start at 10 a.m. and conclude at 2:30 p.m.

By MCS Staff Extra -curricular activities are finishing for the year and the youngest and oldest students are preparing for their graduations.

This year’s kindergarten class will be having their graduation ceremony June 18. Parents and grandparents are welcome to come at 1:45 p.m. to watch the young students graduate into Grade 1.

The Grade 12 class will be graduating June 26 and moving on to new adventures. Their ceremony will be at 7:30 p.m. in the arena.

Two students travelled to Kerrobert to participate in the junior golf playoffs June 9. Brayden Harris, Grade 9, and Kale Swark, Grade 8, represented the school. They tried their best and had a good day on the course.

The school community council held their final meeting of the year June 8.

They are going to organize and cook the hamburgers for the school’s park day June 19.

The SCC held their elections that evening. The new chairperson is Greg Ferris. The new vice-chair is Dwayne Harder. Returning as the SCC secretary is Michelle Nelson. Monica Perehudoff will be returning as the treasurer. Kim Voegeli

maintains her position as electoral member.

The SCC organized several events this year and helped with many school functions. Staff and students thank them for their work and support.

Congratulations to the Grade 8 class for their participation in the division-wide cardboard boat races June 10. The students had been learning about three-dimensional measurement and construction in their math class. They had to apply their knowledge to design and construct cardboard boats in only 90 minutes.

After construction, they had to race the boats across the pool and hope they stayed afloat!

Ju Young Park, Kale Skwark and Thomas Elgersma won second place overall in the races. They received the silver medal. They also won first place in the flutter board scramble. For this win, they received free ice cream for the whole Maymont team. The group also won the honour of having the boat that sank the fastest!

The Maymont group also received very high praise for their behaviour and politeness to all the other participants.

Grades 1 through 6 had a very enjoyable day at Hafford June 12. Hafford hosted the elementary track and field meet. It was a perfect day, not too hot, not too cold, and the bugs stayed away. Students participated very well and made some new friends. Hafford students and staff were excellent hosts and MCS thanks them for all their work.

Sympathy is extended to Twyla Stott on the recent passing of her aunt, Meriel Knowlson.

The Saskatchewan Elks Foundation sent word that four MCS students won provincial awards for their healthy choices poster and videos.

Anneka Harder, Grade 1, placed third in the beginner category and was awarded $50. Carlee Hamilton and Keeley Bzdel, Grade 11 students, placed second in the intermediate video category and received $150. Audrey Friesen, Grade 10, placed third in the intermediate video category and received $125.

The second annual Maymont School athletic barbecue and awards was held after school Monday. Students were recognized in many aspects of sports.

WWII vet awarded French Legion of Honour

UNITY — Second World War veteran Bill Fleming of Unity was presented with the French Legion of Honour by the Saskatchewan Honorary Consul for the Republic of France June 6.

The Legion of Honour ceremony, held at Parkview Place, a seniors’ residence in Unity, was open to the public and a number of guests were in attendance, including members of Fleming’s family who travelled from out of province for the special presentation.

Honorary Consul Vincent Martin explained that, to celebrate last year’s 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings, the French government had “decided to present awards to all of the living Canadian veterans who participated in D-Day operations.” The award chosen was the Legion d’Honneur

— the highest award possible for France to give, equivalent to our Order of Canada.

William George “Bill” Fleming landed on Juno Beach June 6, 1944 with Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied France.

Addressing Fleming directly, Martin said, “As a young man, Mr. Fleming, you left your family and your home to cross the Atlantic and participate to one of the fiercest battles in modern history, on a foreign soil, far away from your country ... Our two countries owe each other their very existence as free nations and this indeed creates a special relationship.

“The French people will never forget the act of bravery accomplished (by) Canadian soldiers … There is no winner in war, but sometimes fighting is necessary and you personify the great Canadian spirit to defend

Martin also said, “Freedom is more important than life. Many people made the ultimate sacrifice to allow others to remain free and unchained. This is the sacrifice that more than 45,000 Canadians made during the Second World War. The DDay was this very first step that enabled liberty, justice and human dignity to break through.

“Canadian soldiers were on the front line, and it is with extraordinary bravery and sacrifice that they landed on Normandy beaches.”

Martin concluded his speech by saying, “So thank you so much, Mr. Fleming, for fighting at our side for freedom and democracy. Thank you for making France a free country, and thank you for making my family a happy, living family.

Martin then pinned the Legion of Honour decoration onto the already heavily decorated Royal Canadian Legion uniform Fleming wore for the occasion.

Fleming’s son, Harold, who lives in Ontario, read the citation that outlined his father’s accomplishments.

Born in Plunkett, Nov. 30, 1916, Bill enlisted in the Canadian army in 1941, joining the London, Ont. regiment, the First Hussars. He trained as a heavy transport driver and went ashore on Juno Beach with the Allied Forces on D-Day. Despite the loss of his brother June 7 in a “friendly fire” incident, “Bill soldiered on, serving with the First Hussars through Northern France, Belgium and the Netherlands, ‘right up to the German border.’”

After the war, Bill and his wife Nellie bought a farm of their own near Swarthmore.

Harold was their only child.

Later the couple moved into Unity where Bill was eventually honoured with life memberships in the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 90 and the Unity and District Heritage Museum for his many years of hard work in both organizations.

In 2012, Bill received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his community service.

The citation concluded, “This brave, tough old soldier has served well both in war and in peace.”

Earlier Martin explained the French Legion d’Honneur was created “in 1802, during the reign of Napoleon.” Previous Canadian recipients include former Governor General Michaelle Jean, former Quebec premier Jean Charest, former prime minister William McKenzie King; Percy W. Nelles, admiral and chief of the naval staff during the Second World War; Rear Admiral Leonard Murray, commander-in-chief of Canadian Northwest Atlantic and architect of the Battle of the Atlantic; and Rear Admiral Desmond Piers, former commanding officer of HMCS Algonquin.

Unity Legion members took advantage of the occasion to also give Fleming his 90th Royal Canadian Legion Anniversary Commemorative Medal. Secretary Theresa Keller presented Fleming with that medal.

George Ward, padre of the Unity branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, was MC. The Wards and Flemings were neighbours in Unity for eight years.

After both presentations had been made, the speeches concluded and God Save the Queen sung by those in attendance, many took the time to individually extend their congratulations to Fleming. Cake, coffee and socializing wound up the event.

New swimming pool now open

Only a week left of school days for students at Unity Public, Composite High and St. Peter’s schools.

Take extra care in those school zones as it will be very busy along those streets until school is officially out; kids are getting excited for summer so they won’t necessarily be watching traffic as well as they should be.

Due diligence will keep us all safe in these last couple of busy weeks of June.

The biggest thing that happened in our community was the new swimming pool grand opening June 10.

The weather wasn’t the grandest but that didn’t deter many families from coming to take part in the grand opening of the Unity Credit Union Aquatic Centre. The grounds were buzzing with activity as families and residents came for the barbecue and the children’s games as well as for a free swim.

Last week’s column talked a little about the award given to veteran Bill Fleming. A full house gathered at Parkview Place as Mr. Fleming was presented with the French Legion of Honour for his role in the D-Day landings, marking last year’s 70th anniversary of this historic Second World War event by the French government.

Ninety- eight-yea r-old Fleming, well-known in the community, added this decoration to his uniform, already decorated with many acknowledgements for his brave service in the CAF. Folks in Unity are quick to jump to the aid of fellow residents in time of need and another situation has come up where residents are banding together to help. Melissa and Dan Surine are seeking help for infant daughter Emma, who has been diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy, a condition that has no cure and no hope for a long lifespan.

Fundraisers are hoping to send the Surines to an SMA conference in the United States with hopes of Emma becoming part of a clinical trial that may offer a glimmer of hope for her condition. A barbecue was held June 19, but donations are still welcome online at www.gofundme.com/wj5hf7c\.

There is a free car seat clinic June 22 from 9 a.m. to noon and 1to 3 p.m. at the Unity Health Centre ambulance bay.

UCHS students were celebrated a couple of times last week, first with their own awards night June 9, honouring academics, athletics, the arts and leadership. As well, two retiring teachers, Mr. Herrick and Mr. Ehnisz, were honoured, giving them

the podium to put in their final words before riding off to the sunset. A coffee and dainty social followed the awards ceremony where attendees were asked to put in their messages for the teachers’ retirement keepsakes.

As well, UCHS inducted Ken Fisher, the founder of Chatters with now more than 100 locations. Ken was a UCHS student from 1967-70 and still works hard in the hair stylist business today with numerous accolades given at the ceremony.

Marcella Pederson, a student from 1966-69, was

inducted for numerous accomplishments including her dedication and commitment to the National Farmers Union.

Ryan Riess was also inducted. Ryan was a student from 1991-97 and has led the way on projects in his work as a chemical engineer, designing reclamation projects at several places under his employer, Pinter and Associates.

Selected students also attended the annual Living Sky School Division Hall of Fame event in Battleford, recognizing excellence in academics, athletics, arts and leadership.

Congratulations to Team Trotsalot who fundraised $13,236 for the annual Crohn’s and colitis fundraising walk. Consisting mostly of family and friends from

the Bonogofski and Tuscherer families, they worked hard at several events helping to contribute to the total raised across Canada for research.

St. Peter’s year-end variety show and awards day is June 26. This event includes mass at 11 a.m. with a Grade 6 farewell student and parent lunch, followed by awards and a variety show in the afternoon.

Unity Public School has been busy with class field trips and kindergarten celebration days, as well as the Grade 6 celebration event today.

The ball diamonds continue to be busy as all teams are gearing up for their respective provincial championships starting the first weekend in July. The Junior Ladies UK Royals team is hosting provincials along with the bantam boys July 17 weekend right here in Unity. Volunteers will be needed for a number of duties, so please contact Brent Weber if you can help.

Edam seniors entertained for an afternoon

The Edam seniors were guests at the Do Drop In June 12, starting out with a potluck dinner and then spending a social afternoon, together. Cards played were canasta, cribbage and 500.

It was a nice day, enjoyed by all.

The monthly meeting of the Do Drop In was held that same morning with a dozen or so attending. Mark will be asked to spray the building for spiders. The library report had good news – Wi-Fi is available at the library here for the use of the public. Linda will give a report on the SSAI convention in September. Gwen reported arrangements were in place for senior members’ boat rides June 14, at 1 p.m., weather being suitable, down at the boat launch. As it turned out it was too cold and windy, so we’ll try again some day. News of the summer games at Rosetown was handed out for anyone interested. The club is still dealing with council on finding a remedy for the street in front of their property and it

was suggested to see if any grant money could be found for such an undertaking. A new coffee pot is needed so Lawrie Ward will purchase one. There are several openings throughout the summer when the hall is available for renting out. Happy Birthday was sung to June members with birthdays. The next regular meeting will be Sept. 11.

I saw a hummingbird at my feeder, so at least one has found it. When we were in Telkwa, B.C. their hummers had left before we arrived and didn’t return until after we left – most disappointing.

They have so many now that when the folks sit out on the deck they fly right among them, just missing their heads at times. The spell that they were away was either building their nests or hatching them out, about three weeks.

Wappel. They raised money for the BUH laboratory for three new microscopes to provide quicker, more accurate and detailed analysis resulting in faster diagnosis and treatment.

The next Wellness Clinic will be June 18 at the Do Drop In from 8:40 to 10:40 a.m.

All ATV, side-by-sides and golf carts must have drivers over 16.

The Meota Lions Club held their spring bottle drive May 23, and raised $3,321 to help the many community activities they support throughout the Meota area.

They appreciate all who assisted in the drive – those who save bottles, those who picked them up and those who sorted. There is a lot of work involved and only volunteers with time can do it. The next drive will be in September or you can drop donations off any time next to the water treatment plant.

The library is offering a Canada-wide Summer reading program for children – sign up at our local library and get your free stuff to participate.

Driving in Leduc one morning Donna and I watched a lady in the car beside us eating with a fork and talking on her phone at the same time, driving down Main Street. It does make you wonder what goes on in her head.

The cemetery clean up was slated for June 9 in Meota Cemetery. Many hands took part as it is a big area to cover and it takes most of the day to get it done. Some brush has been cleared out to make this job easier and the sunken graves that were filled with dirt last fall, had the stinkweed removed or shortened. Linda Ard took lunch out to the working folks.

Ladies’ night at the Meota Golf Course will be June 24.

Men’s night will be June 23.

Pearl Hawkins has planted flowers at the community park, so it is now up to the public to keep it clean.

While Maureen Campbell and I did our best last year, it is time other folks took a turn. We all take credit for the beauty of the resulting flowers, so let’s get out and lend a hand, just whenever one has time, and make it truly a community project.

Flowers were supplied by an anonymous donor for Memorial Hill’s flower bed, and were planted by Gwen Lacerte. These will compliment the three bleeding hearts and one peony planted in honour of veteran Ray Knowles.

A nice 85th birthday party was held in Edam June 13, honoring Jean Arnott.

Jean has lived in that area all her life and many turned out to have a coffee with her and congratulate her. Her two daughters, Diana Shepherd and Wendy Gansauge, were present. Many grandchildren were missing because ball season has started and the diamonds were very busy in Edam that day.

When we were stopped for lunch in Salmon Arm, B.C. the street was blocked because a semi had rear-ended a small car. The turbaned truck driver dusted the white paint off his bumper but the little white car didn’t fare so well and was being towed to a body shop. However the couple did walk away from the accident scene and would not notice their whiplash until the next day.

The Meota Hobby Band entertained at St. Joe’s Church in North Battleford, June 9 to the pleasure of many folks. This was followed by a barbecue supper that was enjoyed by all.

Eight residents from Harwood Manor attended by travelling with their handibus, a nice outing for all.

Duplicate bridge was played on June 9 with a couple tied for score results. Tied for first and second were Eric Callbeck and Gerry Fernandes and Vern Iverson and Beatrice Novlan. Tied for third and fourth were Mary Greenwald and David Sharpe and Margaret Dyck and Dave Creegan.

Many hands well played, I would think.

Contract bridge was played June 15 at the Do Drop In, with top scores going to Linda Ard in first and Gerry Craig, second.

Battleford’s handcraft festival is July 17 and 18 and 19. The Musical Ride is being held at Fort Battleford July 13 at 7 p.m. Don’t miss the chance to see them for the first time or the fourth!

They are amazing to watch and if you love horses, they are remarkable.

Here from Beaumont, Alta. was Beulah’s son Blair and Erna and their daughter, Jenna, which she is always so happy to see. From Saskatoon, visiting in the area with Beulah and many other old friends was Rose Marie Nyholt. Everyone was happy to see her back home, even though briefly.

Condolences go out to the family of th Joe Orosz of Spiritwood, who passed away June 7, with his funeral held in Spiritwood Catholic Church June 13. He was 83 so would be in the pioneer class and has been around a long while so definitely will be missed by many in the agricultural field. He was involved with 4-H for many years.

A story on the computer showed a truck that rearended the back of a trailer loaded with a boat, being pulled by a car. The truck hit the trailer hard enough that the boat flew through the air and came to rest on top of the car while the trailer was

Activity Programs – Evergreen Health Centre (Leoville): Volunteers assist staff with activities. Depending on the needs of the facility, duties may include assisting with crafts, shopping trips, birthday parties,

special functions, music therapy, exercise programs, bowling groups, horticulture, painting or baking.

Shifts are 9 a.m. to noon or 12:45 to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Special Groups or Individuals – Spiritwood and District Health Complex: These volunteers entertain, give presentations, prepare birthday parties, provide

cakes or sing, for the patients and residents.
