Dismal CSI numbers for NB again

It is yet another abysmal performance for North Battleford atop the Stats Canada crime severity index.

North Battleford was once again first in Canada for crime severity by police service among cities over 10,000 population, finishing with a CSI score of 352.89 for the year 2016.

That is up from 327.22 the year before, for a per-

centage change in the CSI of 7.84 per cent and is the worst score that North Battleford has posted in the category over the previous five years.

Among communities of 10,000 or more, North Battleford finished ahead of the usual contenders: Thompson, Man., at 284.30, Prince Albert at 243.75 and Williams Lake, B.C., at 221.62.

On the non-violent Crime Severity Index,

North Battleford posted an even worse score of 357.89 for 2016 – once again, the worst in the country for communities over 10,000.

It was also the worst score for North Battleford since 2012, when it was 373.82.

As for the violent crime severity index, North Battleford posted a CSI of 337.13. The good news is this is down from 366.34 last year.

North Battleford marked the beginning of Battlefords Pride Week with the raising of the rainbow Pride flag at City Hall.

Mayor Ryan Bater was on hand for the flag-raising along with supporters of Pride Week including members of the Battlefords and Area Gender and Sexuality Alliance.

While the organization has had a float in the Northwest Territorial Days parade, and the Pride rainbow flag has flown at City

Hall before, this is the first time Pride Week has been organized for North Battleford, according to KayLynne Collier of the Battlefords and Area GSA. “There have been small marches here and there throughout the years, but there hasn’t ever been a full official Pride Weekend or Pride Week or anything like that,” said Collier.

Collier said the goal for this weekend is to “have a good first year and make a good first impression, and we’re trying to make sure that everyone in the com-

munity can get involved.

All of our events are childfriendly and family-friendly, and we’ve tried to make them free or low cost.”

While the flag-raising marked the start of the activities, most events will be taking place later in the week.

On Friday, a barbeque will be hosted behind the Catholic Family Services parking lot in the back.

They will be selling burgers, veggie-burgers, pop and frozen treats among other items.

Those two positives were enough for city officials to issue a news release where they pointed to the success of their community safety efforts.

“City Council is very pleased to see a great reduction in violent crime in the community and thank everyone for their efforts,” said Mayor Ryan Bater in a statement.

“It is very good news that North Battleford is no longer the number 1 community in Canada for violent crime. We believe that is due in part to the increased patrols and added emphasis on Community Safety through our Community Safety Strategy.”

As for the high CSI and non-violent crime numbers, the city news release attributed those increases to crimes that are preventable: vehicles stolen be-

cause of keys left inside, items stolen from an unlocked vehicle, and items stolen from an unlocked garage or shed.

The city urged people to lock their doors and sheds and not leave valuables in their vehicles, as well as to get to know their neighbours. They also pointed to their public awareness campaign “Eyes That Care” and intend to send an information sheet to every household with information on how to combat these crimes.

As for Saskatchewan’s showing as a whole, it left a lot to be desired. The crime severity index was 148.84, an increase of 8.68 percent.

That is the worst showing for any province in the country, way ahead of Manitoba’s score of 114.44.

It is also the worst score the province has posted over a five-year period of time.

crime severity was up 9.22 percent to 149.54.

Among metropolitan areas in the country, Regina and Saskatoon posted the worst crime severity index numbers, at 125.81 and 117.78, respectively.

In a news release issued by RCMP “F” division, they tried to put the best spin they could on the numbers.

In particular, they noted property crime in RCMPpoliced areas has seen a steady decline over the last 10 months, beginning in August 2016. Property crime has dropped 10 per cent through the first six months of this year from the same time period in 2016, they said.

As for the province’s increase in the Crime Severity Index, the RCMP stated it was primarily driven by an increase in the number of homicides in the Division. Otherwise, the level of violent crime remained essentially unchanged.

Good old days?

Dear Editor Sponsored by companies to which farmers practically owe their souls, the Farm Progress Show in Regina has come and gone. I suppose everyone who read through the Show Guide believed whatever they read? On one page there was a small ad, however, which caught my eye and held it. It was titled The GOOD OLE DAYS? Then followed the line, “In 1900, one farmer fed 10 people” After that came, “Todays farmer feeds over 120 people.”

Oh, I say! Doesn’t that seem impressive!

Does it?

In 1900 the farmer in the West would have worked on 160 acres, one quarter section.

He would have used horses and even oxen. I’m not advocating a return to that power; some horses led sorry lives but they fertilized the soil in life and in death and reproduced themselves. I’ll return to that later. Farm families in 1900 were often quite large, so if we keep to the 10 people it would seem the family would have little left to seed, having eaten most of the produce!

Fast forward from that year of 1900 and the quarter section, 160 acres, on which this letter is being written, produced wheat, oats, honey, eggs, cream, apples, plums, strawberries, crabapples, currents, gooseberries, raspberries and roasting fowl. Did it feed more then 10 people?

You bet it did! There were already 11 in the family, and without the aid of anything but skimpy records I’d estimate it fed probably 75 people. It was, however, intensive farming. It was hard labour. Who will do that?

Not many Canadians, not today.

Now, to the farmer who feeds 120 people. He sure doesn’t do it on 160 acres, no, indeed. He seems to need almost a township to do it! If you do the math he isn’t actually doing that well. And he owes the machinery company for power which does not fertilize the land nor reproduce itself, he owes the oil company, he owes the chemical company, he owes the bank – that’s not new – and the land is weedy, more weedy than ever because there are weeds all over that we at one time did not have.

And he no longer owns any of the co-operative companies the farmers of 1900 and thereafter worked so hard to create.

And the main sponsor of the Farm Progress Show is Viterra. There’s irony.

Lots of it. However, contrary to what Brian Giesbrecht and the Regional Optimist would like to have us believe, our ongoing responsibility and culpability has not just up and ended and/or disappeared, like magic. Our residential schools, our 60s scoop were as immoral, sadistic, damaging and wrong as anything out of South Africa. And whether we like it or not, we still own them, “lock, stock and barrel.” Their effect still profound and most terrifying, maybe everlasting.

Overloaded vans are a dangerous way to travel. What insurance is required by passengers?

How often are Tim Horton’s washrooms cleaned?

Return trip requires waiting in Saskatoon from 11:05 a.m. till 4:30 p.m. when the Greyhound bus leaves for North Battleford. Where can I wait with my luggage in tow?

Travel time: 10 hours This trip is fragmented, expensive and extremely stressful!

Now let’s look at the Saskatchewan citizen’s version of seamless transportation provided by STC. 11:00 a.m. Board STC bus in North Battleford.

12:45 p.m. Arrive Saskatoon. Luggage transferred by STC baggage handlers.

Enter a gated and secured depot with security personal, ticket agents to direct passengers, lockers for luggage storage, immaculate washrooms and food services.

1:15 p.m. Board STC Express Service to Regina.

WiFi available.

4:00 p.m. Arrive Regina. Enter a secured depot with all of the above services.

Total cost: $59. Travel time: 5 hours Return trip required a 30-minute wait between arrival in Saskatoon and departure for North Battleford. Travel time: 5 1/2 hours.

This trip was SEAMLESS, affordable, relaxing.

Above all else, it was a safe way to travel.

My favourite tools – it’s a guy thing I suspect every man who considers himself manly in the Tim Allen Tim the Toolman sort of way has a favourite tool.

I have two, one hand tool and one power tool.

Now, if you can’t figure out why a man would have a favourite tool, stop reading, because you’re never going to get it. It is likely beyond your capability of comprehension. But if you drool while wandering the tool crib at Home Depot, read on.

The hand tool is a Canadian Tire Mastercraft 45 degree bent needlenose pliers. I probably got it 17 years ago or so, and I have never seen one like it since. Trust me, I’ve looked. I’ve even searched online for a similar one, just in case I should lose this one. I can’t find it.

What makes these needle-nose pliers so special is that they are thin – really thin. Every other needle-nose pliers I’ve found are usually thick, like the fingers on a kid who’s been raised on slushies. These are more

In almost any application where I’ve needed pliers in tight applications, they have come out supreme. The other day I was trying to take the fuel line off a generator to drain off some old gas.

I pulled out long needlenose pliers, long 90 degree bent needle nose pliers and normal needle-nose pliers. Nothing worked.

But my magic pliers got in that really tight spot and worked.

They’re really handy when doing wiring, bending loops, inserting ground wires into junction boxes … ah, it’s just bliss, thinking about it.

The other tool is my Dewalt reciprocating saw.

No, it’s not rechargeable. I generally despise rechargeable power tools because I want full power, all the time, and I don’t want to be left hanging near the end of a project.

When we bought our first house, in North Battleford, it was immediately evident that the deck was in dire need of replacement. We simply didn’t have the money to do so.

A few years later, after having put my foot through the deck three times, something had to be done. It just happened to be that the Battleford Pool elevator was being demolished. Many, many moons ago my late grandfather,

Ed, salvaged a bunch of wood from a grain elevator, so I figured this would be the perfect time to get some free wood.

With my friend, Jon, in tow, a borrowed generator from our neighbour, Jim, a chain, my van and a borrowed trailer, we began. Jon and I set to work dragging away cribs from the demolition and cutting them apart at the corners, using my brand new Dewalt reciprocating saw.

In a couple of days of back-breaking work, we got a huge pile of lumber.

Unfortunately, the idea of prying it all apart did not pan out well, and it all ended up getting burned in our wood stove. Thankfully, Jon still speaks to me on a regular basis.

But it was that experience with this saw that

began my love affair with it. Every time it came out of the case, I had to cut everything in sight. One tree branch need trimming? Why stop at one?

In my current project of deck demolition it again never let me down. I tried my step-dad’s similar saw, with a brand new blade, and there was no comparison. Give me my Dewalt.

My great-uncle, Paul Marnovich, was a carpenter. He lived with us in his final days when I was very young, and when he passed, his tools came into our possession. I recall he had one of those wooden tool boxes with a saw, hammer, level, tape measure, hand cranked brace and bit. There wasn’t much else. If he could see what I

The Pride march is planned for Saturday at 1 p.m., starting at the Civic Centre and going mainly down 100th Street along the sidewalk. Anyone is welcome to join the march, Collier said; you do not need to be associated with a business or organization to take part.

From 9 a.m. until midnight a dance is planned, but the location was not yet nailed down as of Monday.

Organizers have looked at Central Park but it is possible McPhail Park could be an alternative location.

On Sunday some workshops are planned for North Battleford library between 2 and 5:30 p.m.

One of them will feature Fran Forsberg, who will be speaking at that time in a workshop entitled Supporting Gender-Creative

Children starting at 2 p.m.

Forsberg is the individual who launched a human rights complaint on behalf of her transgender child to the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission.

Collier will be doing a workshop on how to be a good support for LGBTQ friends and community members.

Finally there will be a screening behind the Catholic Family Services parking lot at 8 p.m. of the movie Milk, about the life of politician and gay rights activist Harvey Milk.

One challenge has been scheduling the Pride activities alongside the North Battleford International Street Performers Festival, which is also happening downtown this weekend.

Collier said that there have been meetings with them to work out details so that each event can co-exist separately at the same time.

“We have been co-ordinating with them to make sure,” said Collier. “We’re trying to make sure everything is harmonious and we’re not interfering with

their festival, and creating a safe and accepting atmosphere.”

For his part, Mayor Bater welcomed the start of Battlefords Pride Week.

“And that’s partly what this is about. It was great that the volunteers of Battlefords Pride Week approached the city to do the proclamation, to do the flag-raising, and we’re just happy to be a part of it.”

Mayor Bater also indicated he plans to personally be at the Pride march on the weekend. He noted the Pride events are historic for the city.

“I believe this is a first for the city and, like I said, I think it’s long overdue, and we’re just happy to be part of it.”

I’m hoping that they will also learn to love and appreciate tools, and be able to build and fix things for themselves, essential skills that are becoming more rare by the day.

Maybe some day, I’ll ask them what their favourite tool is. I’m leaning toward pliers.

Dekker Centre season promises variety

As per the Dekker Centre’s mandate, manager Moe McGuinty brings a number of different acts to the performing arts centre each season representing a number of different genres.

The musical variety, especially within rock music, reflects the times.

“In the old days when I was in my prime, if you put 10 guys around a table and said, ‘Who’s your favourite band’ you’d have about three different bands,” McGuinty said. “If you put 10 guys around a table now, you’re going to get 10 different answers. Three of the 10 aren’t going to say ‘Arcade Fire,’ it just isn’t happening.”

The 2017-18 lineup of mainstage shows features acts performing rock, country, pop, folk and classical. And, of course, Christmas music.

McGuinty said this year, the Dekker Centre is selling tickets to certain shows in three different series: a classical/jazz series for $100, a country series for $135, and a rock series for $150. Each series features four different shows of performers of the respective genres.

A folk singer himself, McGuinty said he’d “crawl across broken glass” to see the Brothers Landreth, who Bonnie Raitt has said are currently one of her favourite acts.

Henry Heillig, who plays bass with the Heillig Manoeuvre, played with McGuinty in the seventies, while McGuinty said the wild stories and influence of the Blues Brothers movie make him want to see the Legendary Downchild, an incarnation of the Downchild Blues Band.

“Geographically we’re nicely positioned and you can’t underestimate that,” McGuinty said. “There’s a huge difference between going from Saskatoon to Edmonton, or Saskatoon to Calgary, than Saskatoon to North Battleford. An hour and a half is a day off. When you play in Saskatoon last night and here tonight, that’s when you do your laundry because you’re not in the car for eight hours.”

“One of the main reasons of the thinking behind these miniseries is ‘I gotcha to come four times a year,’” McGuinty said. “It might start turning into a more natural thing for you to do.”

If an act within a series doesn’t appeal to audiences, McGuinty said he isn’t worried.

“Everybody has a weird brother-in-law.”

Battleford post office update: On schedule Josh Greschner Staff Reporter

Cassandra Germsheid said the renovation and restoration of Battleford’s post office is going according to plan.

Except for plumbing, not much is finished but “in the works.” Windowpanes have been scraped and primed, the roof is being painted, and new drywall is being installed. Piping and electrical work have been updated. The exterior brick has been sprayed with dry ice to restore it to a previous form.

Stairs have been ordered and installing them to the second floor is an upcoming project. Since there are currently no stairs to the second floor, Germsheid said “if we absolutely need to go up there we can, but we’re just going to have to leave the clock for now because it’s not essential to getting Canada Post in there by September.”

Much of the current work on the first floor is directed toward Canada Post’s fixturing period, beginning on Sept. 1. The two-month period between Sept. 1 and Nov. 1 allows Canada Post to prepare to make the post office operational. Canada Post will make some of its own renovations, while Nov. 1 is the date the post office is set to open.

Plans regarding the above floors will be drawn up later, although Germsheid said renting out the second floor as office space is an option.

Germsheid’s husband, Jesse Crozier, who is leading the project, has experience with historic restorations, having worked on the Sallows and McDonald Funeral Home on 103 Street.

North Battleford city council unanimously passed a resolution in favour of a permanent placement of the Treaty 6 flag at a recent council meeting.

“This is an important nation-to-nation recognition,” said Mayor Ryan Bater. “The Battlefords are right in the heart of traditional territory for Treaty 6, recognizing we are on lands that people were governing here and living here far before any settlement from Europe or otherwise, and I think it’s really important that be recognized.”

Bater also had carried the Treaty 6 flag during Urban Treaty Day ceremonies at the Dekker Cen-

tre on June 28 during the Grand Entry. Early in the meeting he explained that he carried the flag because “every Canadian in this country is a treaty Canadian.”

The resolution was greeted with enthusiasm by council as well. Councillor Kent Lindgren called it “an important step forward for us as a city” and said he was “quite excited to vote for this resolution.”

Earlier in the meeting, council heard from Brandie Carignan, a community member who presented her proposal for a permanent mounting of the Treaty 6 flag as it relates to “revivification of our downtown core.”

She pointed to permanent treaty flags in Calgary, Edmonton, Lloydminster, Saskatoon and Regina, and said this was in keeping with the Truth

Lighter a reminder of NB’s baseball past

A rare item found on the grounds of old Abbott Field on King Hill has brought excitement to the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame.

The item is a silver cigarette lighter that is believed to have belonged to Jack Abbott, for whom Abbott Field was named.

On one side, there is an inscription that reads: “J.H. Abbott From 1947 Baseball Club.” On the other side are the initials “J.H.A.” The lighter was found

by Justin Kisser, a Battleford resident. He uses a metal detector to look for coins or other memorabilia hidden underneath the ground.

He and a cousin have been using the metal detector as a hobby over the past three years. The motivation has been primarily historical in nature. Kisser has approached various organizations around the community, including schools as well as Town Hall, and received their permission to use his detector to look for all kinds of buried treasures on grounds in the area.

The items he’s unearthed include a halfdime, a penny from 1918, a “3139 North Battleford” tag, an old pocket watch, a sewing thimble, and even bullets from Fort Battleford. In an interview with the Regional Optimist, he even showed off a button from the old North West Mounted Police that was found.

“We rescue relics,” said Kisser of what he does.

But when he unearthed the cigarette lighter, he was particularly excited.

It was a notable find as it belonged to an era when baseball was “the” sport

for local residents to see in the Battlefords. It was especially notable because of where it was found, and the inscriptions on it.

According to the article The History of Abbott Field by Les Dean, Abbott Field was built in 1946 to replace the former ball diamond in the area where the Don Ross Centre is now located.

The new ballpark was located at the top of King Hill, which offered spectators a view not only of the ball diamond but the spectacular North Saskatchewan River valley.

According to Jane Shury, from the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame, the baseball park was named for Jack Abbott in recognition of his key role in pushing for the new field to be built and in convincing the City of North Battleford to put up the money for it.

Once established, Abbott Field would continue to see improvements. A high board fence came in 1949, a grandstand in 1950, and a bleacher was constructed down the first base line in 1951.

The field hosted the North Battleford Beavers, who joined the Saskatoon and District Baseball League in 1947. That par-

ticular team, which consisted of almost all local players, had an outstanding season and went on to the league finals, but lost to Delisle in the final game played in Saskatoon.

It would have been that 1947 ball club who presented the silver cigarette lighter to Abbott.

Unfortunately, Jack Abbott was not around to see the glory years of the Beavers in the stadium that was named for him.

He died on June 12, 1950.

The Beavers would go on to become a powerhouse team, and the ballpark was a main social attraction for Battlefords residents in those days prior to the arrival of television.

Kisser recalls Shury telling him that, in those days, going to a ball game was what people would do to find their dates.

“There was no Internet... they’d come to a ball game, they’d come there and buy pop, wander around. It was pretty significant, I guess, for that era.”

“That’s what happened all over the province.

That’s why baseball played such an important role in the settling of the province, because – hockey in winter, baseball in summer,” said Shury. “You just went there because you might

Justin Kisser, who uses a metal detector to find old coins and other historical items on grounds throughout the Battlefords, found a major item where Abbott Field used to stand: an old cigarette lighter, one that would have been presented to Jack Abbott by the North Battleford ball club in 1947. Kisser presented the item to Jane Shury of the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, and it will now be a permanent part of the museum’s collection.

Abbott Field continued to be the home of baseball activity and a meeting place for citizens in North Battleford until June 29, 1966.

A plaque, in remembrance of Abbott Field, now stands on King Hill not far from where the ballpark stood.

Last month Kisser took his metal-detector machine to the old Abbott Field grounds to see if there were any coins or items hidden in the ground. He had approached the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame seeking some history on Abbott Field with the idea of using his metal detector in that area. Since the site has stood empty since 1966, it seemed like a prime location to find some items.

Three weeks later, he came back to the Hall of Fame to report his big find: the cigarette lighter.

While Kisser could not say exactly where the lighter was found in relation to where the baseball diamond would have been, he figures its general loca-

tion might have been near to where the home plate was, likely around where the stands were.

Based on the inscriptions on the lighter and the initials, both Kisser and Shury are convinced the item definitely belonged to Abbott.

“They would have given him that because he started it; it’s his name on there and then it says it’s from the 1947 ball club,” said Kisser.

“It’s got his initials. I couldn’t believe it when I read it. When I dug it up I said ‘get out, it can’t be his lighter.’ That’s kind of remarkable.”

They believe the lighter was lost on the premises at some point between 1947 and when Abbott died in 1950.

Now, the lighter will be a permanent part of the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame in Battleford, which includes pictures and other memorabilia of Abbott Field and the Beavers teams of that era.

“It was an amazing find and I am happy to donate it to the Baseball Hall of Fame,” said Kisser. “Instead of me keeping it, I

think it’s going to be better for multiple people to look at it. It’s a piece of history that everybody should be able to see.”

Shury was pleased to accept the donation of the silver cigarette lighter by Kisser to the Hall of Fame.

“This is history. Anybody in North Battleford that ever attended or heard from their grandparents or whoever in the family that watched baseball on Abbott Field on King Hill, it would mean that, hey, there is a little piece of history that was found in 2017, after how many years of being underground,” said Shury.

Now, Kisser looks forward to using his metal detector elsewhere around the Battlefords in search of historical items, and he welcomes any ideas or suggestions about where he should take his detector next.

Sask. Hockey Hall of Fame inductions hosted at Civic Centre

Hockey season has been over for a while, but for one night in July it was again the prime focus at the Civic Centre.

North Battleford was the host of the Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame induction dinner, an event held on Saturday night that recognized the best in Saskatchewan hockey. Making the evening particularly special was the connection of many of those inductees to the Battlefords and the surrounding area.

Nine new inductees were celebrated: three players, two builders, one official, two teams and one grassroots organization.

In the players category, four-time Stanley Cup winner Bob Bourne was inducted into the hall.

The Netherhill native played three seasons with the Saskatoon Blades and had been drafted by the Houston Astros before ultimately choosing a hockey career. He spent 14 seasons in the NHL including with the cupwinning teams of the New York Islanders in the early 1980s.

Through it all, he never forgot where he came from.

“When I got to New York, I was a scared little kid out of Saskatchewan, nervous as can be,” said Bourne.

Bourne attributes his success to the values he learned from home.

“The biggest thing for us as Saskatchewanites is, I grew up on a farm. And you learn how to work on a farm – and if you didn’t work you don’t eat. So you learn the work ethic, and the other thing, too, is you learn to share. I had five brothers and sisters, and you become a team player. And that really transformed into what I was as a hockey player, because I was a team player and I worked hard.”

“As a kid you never ever think of being in any hall of fame,” said Bourne.

“I was very lucky. I had some God-given talent and worked my way up, and it became a passion for me.”

Fiona Smith-Bell started playing hockey as a young girl growing up in Edam,, where she played countless hours on the ice.

She went on to a successful career in women’s hockey, highlighted by her play on Canada’s national women’s team, which won two World Championships and also a trip to the Olympics in 1998.

“It truly is an incredible honour, but to me it’s not just the individual award I’m being honoured with,” said Smith-Bell.

“It goes back to the grassroots level where I had coaches and many players who were all part of this journey for me. It’s pretty special having my family here and seeing so many familiar faces here tonight.”

“It’s not something you envision growing up,” Smith-Bell said of the honour. “What I envisioned was winning that Stanley Cup and hoisting it above my head.”

While she is proud of her accomplishments in the women’s game, “I really truly don’t believe I’m a pioneer,” said SmithBell. She said other women “paved the way for us, and women’s hockey has grown by leaps and bounds.”

Edward “Eddie” Litzenberger was remembered for his long NHL career with the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Black Hawks, Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs.

Born in Neudorf, Litzenberger played minor hockey in Weyburn, and had an outstanding career in junior ranks with the Regina Pats.

He captained the Blackhawks for two seasons. After winning the cup with them in 1961, he was traded to the Leafs where he won three more Stanley Cups in a row. Litzenberger, who died in 2010, scored 183 goals and had 25 assists in 658 NHL games.

ment in developing countless hockey players over five decades.

He was a player/coach in Redvers, Lloydminster and Lashburn, was involved in the Weyburn Red Wings which he helped guide into the SJHL ranks. He also was instrumental as coach and general manager for several seasons with the Swift Current Broncos, first with their WHL franchise and then with the SJHL Broncos after the WHL team moved to Lethbridge.

Dunn was also coach and general manager of the Battlefords Barons from 1979-83 and coached the midget AAA North Stars until 1992.

Members of Dunn’s family were on hand to receive Dunn’s induction into the Hall of Fame.

“It’s the culmination of a lot of years of being associated with a hell of a lot of nice people,” was the reaction of Graham Tuer, who was also inducted in the builders category.

Tuer’s own involvement in hockey spans over five decades as a volunteer, administrator, general manager and scout. He was general manager of the Air Canada Cup-winning Regina Pat Canadians, was assistant GM and scout

with the Regina Pats, was a scout with the Kelowna Rockets and also scouted for NHL Central Scouting.

Previously, he also was given an Award of Merit by Hockey Canada.

Tuer credits his longevity in the game of hockey to “l-u-c-k. Luck.” He also credits this range of opportunities to an attitude where you “never say no to any opportunity you have.”

“God’s been on my side all the way along the line, because I’ve been very fortunate to have been able to work at every level from bantam all the way through,” Tuer said. “I couldn’t ask for much more and I’ve been treated wonderfully at every level I’ve been at.”

In the category of officials, Battleford native Ken Wheler was inducted into the Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame for his years of work as a referee, including time in the WHL and in the pro ranks, including the NHL. It was particularly rewarding for Wheler to be inducted in his home community. His family was on hand for the induction in an arena where he had worked many games in.

noted there was an athletic component to his work.

“Because of the speed of the game you have to be able to keep pace with it, so I think of it as a bit of an accomplishment in that area as well.”

But “it’s different, and the main focus for officials is to protect the safety and integrity of the game and I think that the training and expertise is invaluable to do that so the players can play in a fair and safe environment.”

It is a career that he acknowledges is a tough one, with “a lot of challenges and … with a lot of conflict resolution,” he said.

He recalled times in the WHL when an irate Ernie “Punch” McLean would “throw a garbage can on the ice a couple of times” over calls he made. But those moments are outweighed by the rewards from being involved in the game.

“Just the opportunity to be on the ice and be part of this great game and have the best seat in the house is pretty rewarding.”

In the team category, members of the 1983-84 Wilkie Outlaws were on hand to accept their induction into the Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame. The team won the Senior “B” title in Saskatchewan that year and had also gone unbeaten in 18 games over the course of the season.

That team included 17 players who were from the Wilkie area.

Another senior franchise from the Northwest region was honoured, and that was the 2000-01 Lloydminster Border Kings.

The Kings won the Allan Cup over Petrolia Squires 7-2. The team won the cup in spite of some challenging circumstances: they didn’t have a league to play in.

Their regular season consisted of exhibition games as their rivals departed the Wild Goose Hockey League.

Finally, in the grassroots category, the Northwest Hockey Development Association was inducted.

The group has been active in the Battlefords since 1982 in support of the development of hockey in the local area. Their volunteer work includes running the concessions and assisting with the various improvement projects with the arena, including improvements to the Civic Centre

and the score clock.

So many NHDA volunteers were on hand for the induction ceremony that the stage almost could not hold them all. North Stars president Troy Slywka and SJHL president Bill Chow were on hand to make the presentation of their induction into the Sask. Hockey Hall of Fame.

The induction class of 2017 will now be permanently featured at the Sask.

The day began with a pancake breakfast at the Civic Centre and continued with an outdoor roadhockey tournament during the afternoon.

The proceeds from the banquet are split between the Hall of Fame and the local organization, the Battlefords North Stars.

The 1158 is a locomotive located at the Western Development Museum in North Battleford. The locomotive, now out of service, was built in 1913 for the Canadian Northern Railway, whose railway line is credited with spurring the growth of North Battleford to city status at that time.

Hail storm damage observed in Meota area

The storm we got midafternoon on Friday was more than we asked for.

Some hail accompanied the two to three inches of rain that fell. The first noticeable damage was the beating that the flowers took, then you worry about the crops and how they will survive. Once their stem is bruised they never fill properly.

Many areas in the village suffered flooding despite ongoing efforts to remedy this problem with more culverts and ditches being cleaned out. There was one report of a window being broken by the hail and one RV driving through the storm was sure they were going to lose their windshield, too.

Most buildings will have suffered shingle damage, the older ones worst, of course.

Vern Iverson, second to Donna Scherman and Jean Lowes and third to Gerry Fernandes and Mary Greenwald.

Once a year members of the North Battleford high school band Rosetta, from the 70s and 80s, get together to raise money for mental health. There were 400 tickets pre-sold, and many of these people showed up to spend the evening in the Meota Hotel. The hotel had an enclosed area behind the building where

folks could sit outside and listen and visit, or go inside and dance. The event was a great success and benefit for mental health.

Gloria and Eden Kim and wee Haena hosted a 60th birthday party for Gloria’s mother, Jungja Jun, from Korea, who is spending time with them this summer A large gathering of friends met at 1901st. St. W in Meota Sunday for a delicious buffet supper meal. A great variety of foods and drinks were

enjoyed, followed by a pretty birthday cake. Entertainment then started with a two-man band, some speeches of appreciation by Eden and Gloria and a thank you by Jungja.

Eden took a short spell on the drums and Jungja sang a song in Korean. Happy Birthday was sung to Jungja and many wished her happy birthday as they arrived. She was gifted with flowers, which set off her pretty outfit.

Borden says farewell to past residents

The celebration of life for Ken Reimer, who passed away July 14 at the age of 81, was held on July 14 in the Borden Community Centre.

Presiding was Pastor Marvin Wojda and the soloist was Colleen Cann.

A slideshow presentation was shown prior to the service. After interment in the Borden Cemetery, a noon lunch was served by the Riverbend Fellowship Church. Ken is survived by his wife Doris of Borden, son Terry (Leigh-Ann), daughters Ivy (Norm) Funk and Serena Andrusiak, seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, four brothers, one sister and one sister-in-law.

On the afternoon of July 24, John Buswell’s memorial service was held in the Borden Community Centre, with Rev. Alex Parsons and Rev. Sheldon Carr of the St. John’s Anglican Church presiding. John passed away suddenly on July 5 at the age of 68, and is survived by wife Miriam, daughter Kerry (David), granddaughter Madelyn, his mother Dorothy at Borden, brothers Allan (Vicki) and Neil (Lynna) along with their families.

The Borden Lions Club sang at the service and after the internment in the Borden Cemetery lunch was served by the Borden Friendship Club.

Radisson TOPS Chapter SK5243 held their election of officers for the ensuing year in July and the leader is Jean Sawchyn, co-leader Lorraine Olinyk, secretary Shirley Whitt, treasurer Tina Hessell, weight recorder Ilene Youchezin and assistant weight recorder Doreen Parker. The chapter meets every Thursday morning at 10 a.m. in the Radisson Town Office meeting room and anyone is welcome to drop in free for a meeting.

The chapter also welcomes any new members, female or male, pre-teen, teen or adult.

Trails in the Patricia Kujawa Park provide opportunities for local and visiting hikers to explore nature and experience tranquility, renewal, and inspiration in a setting removed from the noise and busyness of everyday. These trails will undoubtedly increase appreciation of wild spaces and establish a more personal contact between hu-

mans and nature.

Walk slowly. Look closely. The sounds of nature – the soothing rush of water over an established beaver dam, the song of an invisible bird, the wind whispering through treetops ­will acquire a new meaning and significance.

Discover Sask talent on a journey of creativity Submitted What better way to spend a summer day or weekend than to head out on a picturesque drive down country roads, past lush forests, glimmering lakes and streams, refreshing coulees, imposing canyons and rolling parkland for the annual Northern Horizons Journey of Creativity.

This experience is for art lovers, explorers, adventurers and anyone interested in discovering Saskatchewan’s picturesque treasures nestled along the route. On Aug. 5 and 6, studio workshops hosted by artists and craftspeople of the area surrounding Glaslyn, Medstead, Belbutte and Glenbush will open their doors to the public to share their diverse and interesting creative talents. This is a self-drive tour so you may travel in any direction, visit any or all of the studios. Horizon signs will be posted to help mark the trail. Choose your route according to where you are coming from and where you most want to visit. If you wish to visit all the studios in the tour, the smaller area may make it easier for you to accomplish the entire tour at your leisure, take time to visit and to enjoy the scenery.

We are re-introducing the passport this year. At the first site you visit pick up a passport and have the artists at each site mark

it. A draw will be made for all those who visit all the sites during the two tour days. The prize will be a fine-art print of a Saskatchewan phenomenon, “The Crooked Trees” by renowned artist Dave Hiebert. However, if you are unable to get out on the tour during the two tour days when special displays are set up for the public, many of the artists would be happy to have you visit at another time by appointment.

You can experience a wealth of talent and diversity of content and process in a variety of mediums, with some new creations to enjoy each year. As an extra bonus you may see bison, alpacas, mosaics, beautiful gardens and perhaps wildlife along the way. Raven She Hollers takes tunes to Alberta

It may seem that a village as small as Medstead is encapsulated to the area on which it stands. Yet there are many things that transcend geographical limitations, not the least of which is music. Harmony is the bringing of people from all walks of life together, to span much further than the dimensions of a municipality.

This phenomenon is well characterized by the band, Raven She Hollers, of the RM and Village of Medstead. Though their roots are in the northern Saskatchewan prairies, their reach spans far past this area. Band members include Nissa Shiell, Joys Dancer and Chandra Pederson. The band has accrued hundreds of online followers, a notable following. Comments from fans espouse enthusiastic praise for recorded works and past performances.

The band started out in 2011 and released a selftitled album in 2014 which is proudly on display at the local Medstead store. At this store and one in Saskatoon, patrons get the opportunity to purchase the finished album. For locals especially, this is merely a supplement to the numerous resident events which they play. These include celebrations at the local hotel/bar, performances at the Canada 150 celebration and more. Additionally, on June 16, the three members were a musical feature for the opening of Susan Schaefer’s Prairie Whispers Exhibition reception in North Battleford.

According to Shiell, the band recently travelled to Stackwall Studios to lay down tracks with recording engineer Liza Holder.

Stackwall is located just outside of Big River. The new album is expected to launch in autumn of 2017.

Bellelle Guerin Award Winner

At the CWL Provincial Convention held at St. Joseph’s Calasanctius R.C. Church in June, Marcella Pedersen of Cut Knife from the Prince Albert Diocese received the Bellelle Guerin Award along with two other recipients from the Saskatoon Diocese, Ruth Hiebert and Ann Kosokowsky. This special recognition is given to those who have given years of elected service to the Catholic Women’s League of Canada on parish, diocesan, and provincial levels. Left to right are National CWL President Margaret Ann Jacobs, Marcella Pedersen of Cut Knife and Jean Reader, Provincial President. Bellelle Guerin was the founder of the Catholic Women’s League, so this award was created for those who have carried the torch and values of the CWL. Pedersen became a member in 1988 when the Cut Knife parish CWL council was formed.

She has held elected positions from 1991- 2017 in the parish; three two-year terms in the Diocese, and six terms from 1999 -2013 on the provincial level. Positions held in the CWL: Parish Spiritual Convener (91/92), Organization (93/94), President (95/96); President (07-10); Secretary (2011>) Diocesan Organization/Vice-President (97/98); facilitator for over 10 Grow Projects; and President (99/00); Spiritual Development (05/06) (2013-2014) Provincial Communications Chair (2001/02) Spiritual Development (03/04) Resolutions Chair (08/09); Legislation Chair (2009/10), Communications Chair (2011-2013).

On again/off again pool season for Unity

Can you believe it? July is near its end and we will soon be entering our last month of summer. With August long weekend soon upon us, this is yet another reminder to arrive alive and be patient when travelling with multiple other travellers on the roads that include RV’s. The lake will wait!

Unity ball teams continue their success story on the diamonds. Opening weekend of provincial competitions all three teams competing earned their respective provincial titles and will now represent Saskatchewan in their Western Canadian Championships coming up in August. The second weekend of July (14 to 16), five teams travelled across the province to their provincial championships with the Mosquito boys sailing through their competition undefeated to earn their provincial title (a repeat for some boys on the team).

I’m back from a sixweek holiday at Prince George, British Columbia. The weather was about the same as it was in Saskatchewan. It was a very busy time as we celebrated my daughter’s 65th birthday, my grandaughter’s 21st birthday and my grandson’s wedding. Everything was just great.

Denise Newton just returned from a holiday in the Yukon and Alaska. Denise went with her daughter and family.

This past weekend, July 21-23, the last two Unity teams to compete were the Pee Wee boys baseball and the Midget boys baseball however results were not available at press time so we will keep you up to date in the next column.

Ball action will continue into August as the Pee Wee girls head to North Battleford to compete at the U14 Western Canadian softball event, while the Bantam girls will head to Brandon, Man., Aug. 1013 to compete at the U16 Western Canadian chamhere to visit his mom Jean.

It’s devastating to have to leave your home, which many of them have had to do. I think we are fortunate to live where we do.

Even though ball season is not done officially for all teams, the action at the four minor ball diamonds will be reduced as no more tournaments or provincial events will take place, however the teams still competing will be getting in the practice time before they head to their next events.

The Cardinals diamond will stay busy as the Senior Cardinals continue in their league and provincial play; set to host Senior Men’s provincials in Unity in mid August.

The swimming pool has not had lady luck on her side this season. A delayed opening and continuing problems have kept the on again/off again pool season on continuous topic tables for discussion. Keep in mind folks that absolutely none of these issues have been within the control of pool staff or parks and rec director and these people keep persevering with these issues to do their best to make the best out of a bad situation, so bear with them. The town continues to update folks through their pool Facebook page as well as the town website so watch these sites for the latest updates.

August will be another busy month for the Unity Golf club as Aug. 10 is the Seniors Open, Aug. 13 is the four-man scramble, Aug. 27 is the members open; while continuing to play host to men’s and ladies nights during the week. You can also opt to take in the driving range, putting place, nine-hole grass greens or the clubhouse. Follow the UCG on Facebook to get the latest updates so you can know before you go.

Sympathy goes out to the Pritchard and Atcheynum families on the recent passing of Fern Atcheynum, formerly Pritchard. While the family lived in Baljennie, Fern along with her brothers and sisters attended the old Baljennie School.

Fern was the daughter of George and Mary Pricell Prichard and theirs was a large family. Fern was 72 years old.

Get well wishes go out to Bradley Heaver on his gift-of-life recent liver transplant in Edmonton Hospital. He has been on a waiting list for the transplant for some time and will be spending some time in the hospital and in Edmonton recovering from the surgery.

His family members are presently with him. Hired help and family have taken over the farming of various crops, and will also do the fall harvesting soon to some.

Stanley and Walter Mills made a recent visit to Prince Albert to a Vintage Power Machine Show. It was also their 37th Annual Threshing Festival. They had a lot of old time antique machines and stationary engines all running. It is

the opportunity to relax and be pampered at one of our spas; take the dog for a run at the Paw Park; enjoy a round of golf at the Unity Golf Club; enjoy a walk or bike ride on the paved pathways through our town parks; or take in some of the shopping opportunities in downtown Unity!

Our local paper will have their chance at a brief holiday this summer so never fear; you can keep up with your Unity news right here in this column.

Coffee row folks can now happily attest to their garden’s goodness, or that fresh garden produce purchased at the Farmers south of Prince Albert on Highway 11. There is a small museum also on the grounds to go through.

The festival was on for two days, July 15 and 16 weekend.

What a wonderful sight to see Marilyn Monroe’s dress on display. Many people made the trip to Luseland to see the famous dress she wore when she sang Happy Birthday to President Kennedy in 1962.

The dress has not been on show for a good number of years. Now it’s been bought by one of Canada’s millionaires for over four million dollars and put on display at his new food stores being built on the prairies. The owner, Jimmy Pattison was born and raised in Luseland.

The dress went on to be on show in Saskatoon recently. Many people turned up there.

Another workshop bee was held at the Western Development Museum in North Battleford. They are now getting the last finishing touches done on the antique tractors for Those Were The Days coming up soon. They also had some of the head personal from the Saskatoon Western Development Museum to set up a website to help raise money to pay the costs to do improvement on the appearance of the 1158 locomotive built in 1913.

It needed some cosmetic repainting and a few other things fixed. It will take most of the summer

Congratulations go out to the mayor of North Battleford, Ryan Bater, and his wife Heather on the birth of a baby boy, David Gordon Bater, recently.

Baby David is the start on the 6th generation of the Bater family. William Bater and his two sons Arthur and Hedley came to Canada from England along with the Barr Colonist in 1903. They made a stop in the Baljennie area to take up a homestead as they liked the area. Over the years, the family advanced from there. They were good community people, helping to build St. Bridget Anglican Church, the school and the community hall to get the community started.

The church was hit by lightning in July 1952 and burned to the ground.

The Baters bought more land and have continued to farm and raise cattle down through the years and generations. Some family members lived in the Battlefords and parts of Alberta. A lot of history was lost in a house fire in 1980 along with the big hip roof barn, some pigs and other farm buildings. They did rebuild the house and barns. The farm still remains in the Bater family. Other family members still farm and remain in the Baljennie area.

RM of Meota No. 468 Public Notice Zoning Bylaw Amendment

Public Notice is hereby given that the Council of the Rural Municipality (RM) of Meota No. 468 intends to adopt a bylaw under the Planning and Development Act, 2007, to amend Bylaw No. 02-2011, known as the Zoning Bylaw.

INTENT: The proposed ZB amendment will provide greater clarification for: the delegation of Development Officer duties within the municipality; clarifying the submission for permit application exemptions; discretionary use evaluation criteria; additional requirements for development where lands are deemed hazardous; allow the development of modular homes in the LD1 District as a discretionary use; the cleaning up of LR1 and LR2 regulation table references; and specific definitions.

AFFECTED LAND: The affected lands of these amendments are all lands lying within the jurisdiction of the RM of Meota No. 468.

REASON: The reason for the ZB amendment is to provide the following: •Allow for the delegation of Development Officer duties to individuals other than the Administrator.

•Clarify that intensive livestock operations require the submission of a development permit.

•Include additional discretionary use evaluation criteria.

•Expand on hazard land development requirements requested by the Development Officer.

•Within the LR1 District: allow for the placement of modular homes at the discretion of Council; evaluation criteria for all discretionary uses; cleaning up regulation table references; and require the submission of a geotechnical report for the development on hazardous lands.

•Within the LR2 District: inclusion of evaluation criteria for all discretionary uses; cleaning up regulation table references; and require the submission of a geotechnical report for the development on hazardous lands.

PA Parkland volunteer opportunities Submitted The Prince Albert Parkland Health Region is in need of caring, compassionate and committed volunteers to fill the following service positions: “On Call” Volunteers – Evergreen Health Centre, Leoville. Extra volunteers are often needed for the long term care residents on an “on-call” basis, to assist

with outings, parties, social gatherings, shopping trips, taking residents to appointments, etc. Shifts: As needed.

Parent-Tot/Family Volunteering Program – Spiritwood and District Health Centre. Parents and their children visit residents on a one-to-one basis or in small groups. Parents are responsible for their children at all times. Shifts:

Hearing words is one thing, understanding them another Ed, my old neighbour from Saskatchewan, is seldom at a loss for words. He would rather give you a gallon of words than a spoonful.

Ed says that we have free speech in this country, and that means he is free to say as much as he wants.

My old neighbour thought that for me to spend hours or days writing a sermon was a waste of time. Ed has repeatedly asked me, “Why spend hours carefully preparing to tell people the words of the Bible as if it will do them any earthly good?”

He claims that he knows people that have been hearing sermons

for years, and they have never improved one bit.

I said that it is not just hearing God’s word, but believing it, understanding it, applying it and the bearing of its fruit over time. Not everyone who hears God’s word comprehends it or believes it.

The power of words is undisputed. Robert Browning wrote: Words break no bones; hearts though sometimes.” Mildred Houston offered, “A timely word may lessen stress; A loving word may heal and bless.”

Mark Twain speaks of the power of a word to be like a bolt of lightning or the light of a lightning bug.

that sound wise to certain people sound ridiculous to others; for some people value only the speaker, others what is said. As Christians, we know that God’s word has power for it is like seed sown. In the seed itself, there is a great power for life and growth and the production of fruit. The word of God

has the authority to produce faith and life and fruit in those that hear the word.

The power of the seed and God’s word depend on where they fall. If the seed falls on a pathway or hardened soil, it cannot sprout and grow because the ground is too hard. Birds will see it and eat it. Some

hear God’s word, but do not understand it. They dismiss it. Unabsorbed, the evil one snatches it away.

We know not all soil is deep and some soil in rocky areas is very thin.

Seed falling on such ground will sprout and spring up, but the roots cannot go down far for moisture and life. When the hot sun comes, they get scorched and wither away. Some hear God’s word, and it springs up in them with joy, and the word endures for a while but, when the heat of tribulation or persecution comes to them, God’s word withers away in them.

Seeds might also fall

among thorns and grow up, but they get choked out by the thorns. Some hear God’s word, and it grows in them but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it dies before producing fruit.

If the seeds fall on the good deep soil, they will grow and produce fruit in good measure. Some hear the word of God, believe and understand it, apply it to their lives, and in time it bears fruit in various amounts. Not all seeds grow when planted or produce fruit.

Not everyone who hears the word of God grows in that word or produces fruit from it.

Worship Together Spend some quality family time together. Worship at the church of your choice.
