Student struck by vehicle outside BCS

RCMP are reminding students and parents to look both ways before crossing the road, and to be careful in school zones.

According to RCMP, an incident took place Monday morning in front of Battleford Central School in which a student, whose parent was dropping them off at school, was bumped in the hip by a vehicle travelling approximately the speed limit.

The vehicle wasn’t able to brake fully before making contact with the child, police said. RCMP say that at approximately 8:54 a.m., the Battlefords Detachment of the RCMP along with the Battleford Fire Dept and EMS were called to a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian.

Investigation revealed that a white van had been travelling on 24th Street in Battleford. It had pulled over to the side of the road and a young boy jumped

out of the side door, running around the van and into the street. The youth ran directly in front of another van that was travelling at a low rate of speed while passing the first van.

The youth did not look either way before running out in front of the van, say RCMP. The youth suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

There are no charges pending in this matter, say RCMP.

City Hall clarifies city-wide notice on private service homes Staff A public notice sent out last week regarding a bylaw change by the City of North Battleford has garnered some reaction that’s prompted the city to provide further explanation.

A Public Notice on a zoning bylaw amendment regarding Approved Private Service Homes was sent out last week to all 4,400 residential property owners in North Battleford.

The content of this Public Notice was to inform residents of a change in the city’s Zoning Bylaw No. 1971 regarding Approved Private Service Homes.

A statement by the city states, “Based on the phone calls we have been receiving, we would like to take the opportunity to clarify the intent and content of the notice and the proposed changes to the bylaw.”

In general, as per the Planning and Development Act, the City of North Battleford is obligated to notify property owners (residential, commercial or industrial) if a change in the Zoning Bylaw is intended. In the case of the Approved Private Service Homes, the change in the

bylaw is to now permit these homes in residential areas without discretionary use.

“That is why residential property owners needed to be notified – which translates into 4,400 letters,” according to the statement.

Usually, Public Notices get sent out to inform neighbouring property owners of a proposed project in their area, giving them the opportunity to voice their opinion before a law or rule is made. In the case of the Approved Private Service Homes, the amendment does not refer to a specific project, located in a specific area. It is a text amendment in the Zoning Bylaw.

The city says, at this time, there are no proposed homes being presented to council.

Approved Private Service Homes are provincially regulated by the Ministry of Social Services (for more information on the Program, visit https://www. saskatchewan.ca/residents/ family-and-social-support/ people-with-disabilities/ inclusive-family-housingfor-people-with-intellectual-disabilities and www. saph.ca ). They do not op-

erate as a business or employ staff. In these homes, a family unit provides care for individuals who require some level of personal assistance or care (residents of the program may live with limited mobility, mental illnesses, or cognitive disabilities).

As of now, individuals looking to establish an Approved Private Service Home have to apply for a development permit for a personal care home and depending on their district, file a discretionary land use application. The proposed change will allow these homes as a permitted use in all residential districts, meaning that applicants who have met the provincial regulations, only require a development permit from the city.

The city’s statement adds, “Permitting Approved Private Service Homes as a use (rather than a discretionary use) does not require any individual or family to participate in the program or develop this use within their home.

However, if you are interested in doing so, please contact the Ministry of Social Services.”

Alberta man gets jail in vehicle-theft-foiled case Staff

One of two suspects charged in a vehicle theft case on the outskirts of North Battleford Dec. 8 will serve his time in a federal penitentiary.

Matthew MacDonald of Lacombe, Alta., appeared

by CCTV in provincial court in North Battleford Thursday. He pled guilty to theft of a motor vehicle and possession of stolen property charges, as well as a breach of probation count.

One other count was withdrawn and a stay was issued on another property offence from the Swift Current area.

MacDonald was sentenced by Judge Dan O’Hanlon to serve exactly two years on the first two charges, as well as six months concurrent on the breach charge.

MacDonald is current serving time in Alberta on a separate breach of probation charge there.

A stand-alone restitution order of $1,000 as well as victims surcharges were also ordered.

The case highlighted the issues that rural residents are facing in dealing with crime on their properties. In this particular case, the attempt by the two suspects to steal the property was foiled by witnesses on the scene, who prevented the two individuals from leaving the scene.

According to the facts outlined in court, the accused individuals had pulled into a farm located east of North Battleford near highway 40, in a red stolen truck from Alberta.

According to the facts, it was MacDonald who then jumped out and got into one of the other vehicles at the scene, and tried to escape.

One of the witnesses at the scene backed into the approach to cut off the escape route, and the vehicle MacDonald was driving ended up in the ditch.

The co-accused, Joanne Henke, was described in the facts as having also attempted to flee, but the stolen vehicle she was driving collided with another vehicle, and soon after spun into the ditch.

Henke, who is also in custody, appeared in court by CCTV right after MacDonald’s appearance and her charges are still before the courts. Her next court date is set for Jan. 31, also in North Battleford provincial court by CCTV. Both the Crown and defence agreed to a joint submission in the case. The request from counsel, as well as from the accused, was for MacDonald to serve time in the federal system where he is better able to access programming to deal with his drug addictions.

MacDonald’s drug issues were cited as a major factor in this particular case.

The defence acknowledged that drugs were a major problem, and that meth has been a particular problem for two years.

The persistence shown by MacDonald in attempting to get away was an aggravating factor, according to the Crown.

The crime was described as brazen in nature, happening in the middle of the afternoon in broad daylight.

The climate in the community, where the issue of criminal activities happening in rural areas where people feel the need to defend themselves, was also highlighted by the Crown. Judge O’Hanlon also acknowledged in his remarks that there have been problems with offences in rural North Battleford area.

On the flip side, mitigating factors include the early guilty plea as well as MacDonald’s willingness to accept responsibility “I apologize for being here,” said MacDonald in his remarks. “I’m 100 per cent guilty of what I did.”

For his part, Judge O’Hanlon told MacDonald to “make the effort to deal with your drug addiction.”

O’Hanlon urged him to start the process in the federal system.

Call a spade a spade

Dear Editor Reading about the excitement building for Canada’s Agriculture Day is a farce (Farmer Rancher Jan. 25, 2018). It is not about agriculture at all, but about Agribusiness. Even the article (fourth paragraph) proves it: “…opened doors to food conversations through social media and showcased the industry to young people who attended a daylong, marquee event in Ottawa, alongside industry and political leaders. Canadian agriculture is an innovative, vibrant and forward-thinking industry …” Even their guest speaker for this year’s celebration is not a farmer, but a radio science reporter. What does he know about farming? This is more fake news!

Agri-culture takes time to grow and buildup, whereas Agri-business or “the industry,” you can get in or out of it in a day. Now that government and industry policies have depleted the farmers and their livelihood to next to nil, they are suddenly interested in attracting youth.

Why? We don’t eat what we produce so there is no support for farmers. All they care about is exports and all that has led to is farmers getting bigger and in deeper debt. I really don’t know why anyone would want to farm today. And certainly our youth cannot afford to get into farming. There is a sick joke in the agricultural community that parents who encourage their children to become farmers are child-abusers. Just like any other “industry” if there was money to be made, they wouldn’t need to encourage youth. Instead farmers continue to live in a high-stress, cost-price squeeze and continue to be serfs. Everybody in the economic world farms the farmer. And if you do buy into their propaganda, farmers will have to continue to “mine” the soil instead of farming it.

Those in the Saskatchewan oilpatch, and those around Estevan, know Frehlick as something of a living legend in the patch, having built several companies and being one of the most community-minded people I know.

He’s also a strong Saskatchewan Party supporter, and took part in the leadership convention on Jan. 27 in Saskatoon.

I asked him what the Saskatchewan oilpatch needs from the new premier. His answer took me a little off guard.

That’s because it’s not something a new premier can deliver, but rather something a sitting prime minister can. Frehlick said, “The country needs something. It needs pipelines, a federal jurisdiction. That’s the biggest issue.”

Curiously, I got an email the same weekend from someone who goes by the handle “Gerald in Fort Mac.” He wrote, “Is shipping oil out of Churchill a dead issue? Because it seems to me to be a win-win-win for everybody: Churchill, the railroad, the port and Canadian oil. Tankers can be built double hull for the ice bergs. Western oil is tied up in the west for various reasons. The distance between Churchill and

Fort McMurray is only one thousand kilometres.

Is there any group or consortium pushing for this to work?”

I replied that I had spoken a while back to an organization that had looked at it, in depth, but they found the idea untenable.

My own response, having considered the Churchill option for several years, is that it is indeed untenable for several reasons. First, Gerald’s idea of building a pipeline straight from Fort McMurray wouldn’t seem like a bad idea, until you realize almost that entire distance is Cana-

dian Shield, with only a handful of roads. This is not easy terrain in which to build a pipeline, by any stretch. I’m not sure if it’s easier in the mountains of British Columbia, but at least there are more roads to access the right-of-way out west.

Churchill is only open in the latter part of the year. For most of the year, it’s frozen. That’s the hard reality of why it has never gained traction as a major port for any serious purpose, despite many people’s best intentions.

And for a commodity that is measured in production by the day, not the month or year, that simply won’t do.

I don’t even want to get into the possibility of an oil spill on a body of water the size of the Gulf of Mexico, but with effectively zero capability to respond to one.

Last week Canadian Pacific made the remarkable point that it doesn’t want to be oil’s swing

shipper. Well that’s great, especially if your company might rely on a crude-byrail facility on a CP line.

So no pipeline, and no enthusiasm from one of two Class 1 railroads?

The differential on Western Canadian Select, the price for our heavy oil (in other words, most of our oil) is at a huge discount. As I type this, there’s a US$27.70 per barrel differential between West Texas Intermediate (WTI) and Western Canadian Select (WCS). Now, truth be told, there will always be a differential, because WCS is poorer quality than WTI. But that differential has widened considerably in recent months as pipeline capacity became constrained.

A few years ago, I asked the provincial government just how much money Saskatchewan was giving up due to this differential. It took the Ministry of Economy a little while to get back to me, but at that time, the

answer was $300 million per year. Shortly thereafter, that little factoid found its way into speeches by then-premier Brad Wall and his ministers. With the differential in the same range, or higher, now, that figure can’t be too far off.

We, as a province, are losing hundreds of millions of dollars, per year, due to the lack of new pipelines for export, in particular, to tidewater.

If you look at the Brent oil benchmark, (which would generally apply to oil reaching tidewater), the differential to WCS is US$32.08 per barrel.

That’s a lot of money we’re leaving on the table.

That’s money that would pay for libraries, schools, hospitals and roads.

Ray Frehlick is right.

The new premier needs pipelines.

Operation Red Nose organizers met with David Schell of KidSport in the Royal Bank building on Friday, Jan. 26, to present a $13,200 cheque to KidSport.

A total of 33 volunteers provided assistance with driving and other activities as part of the Operation Red Nose 2017 campaign, and a total of 822 hours were volunteered between Nov. 24 and Dec. 31. During the 10 evenings Operation Red Nose was running, a total of 255 rides home were provided. They raised $4,689 in client donations as well as $8,500

The Making of the Premier: Scott Moe’s victory

After all the hoopla, after all the hugs and congratulations and the excitement had settled down in the hall, new Saskatchewan Party leader and Premierdesignate Scott Moe made the media rounds at Prairieland Park on Jan. 27.

The last of those was a scrum with the media.

There, Moe was cool, calm and emotion-free in answering a bevy of questions on a wide range of issues such as why he won, on how he would unite the party, on bringing down a budget, and the challenge of taking over from one of the most popular premiers in Brad Wall.

But the most telling question came from a reporter who asked: “Is this you being excited, sir, about being the next premier?”

“This is me being excited,” Moe responded.

At last, the man who had just won the premier’s job finally was able to open up about what this moment meant for him, and about the process of meeting people around the various communities in the province during the long campaign.

“This has been one of the more rewarding things I’ve done in my life, aside from my family, of course,” said Moe. “Our province is so strong, and I’m so convinced of that now more than ever, and it’s because of the people. And I had an opportunity to meet a whole bunch of them over the last four and a half months.”

It was clear in that initial media scrum that Moe, MLA for Rosthern-Shellbrook, will be a different kind of premier from Brad Wall. While Wall offered a folksy style combined with gifted oratorical skills, Moe’s style is more humble, calm, and no-nonsense.

Moe did share one obvious trait with Wall; one of being unafraid to stand up for the province on the issues, particularly when it comes to the resource sector.

His victory speech included a line he used before in describing the lengths he

would go to prevent a federal carbon tax from being imposed: “Justin Trudeau, if you’re wondering how far I will go, just watch me.”

In the media scrum, Moe elaborated about that warning to Trudeau. “We’re fully prepared to take any position on the carbon tax to court, if necessary.”

Moe also reiterated support for a “made-in-Saskatchewan” climate change plan, and pledged to continue to sell that message and “speak from the rooftops, if you will.”

It was the end of what had been a historic day for the Saskatchewan Party members who gathered at Prairieland Park for the leadership convention.

As is typical of leadership conventions, this one featured the usual candidate speeches and demonstrations prior to the close of voting. There was little on the line for the candidates, though, as the majority of ballots had already been mailed in and were ready to be counted.

The first presentation was from Gord Wyant, who made a familiar pitch for a “big tent” Saskatchewan Party – a free enterprise coalition based on the party’s founding principles.

He warned moving away from this approach would consign “the people of this province to a new dark age.”

Tina Beaudry-Mellor was introduced by Derek Meyers, former Global TV sportscaster and a frequent commentator on sports radio in the province. Beaudry-Mellor continued to make her pitch as the candidate who brought new policies to the race, and made a pitch for a more inclusive and socially-conscious party including Indigenous people and young people.

“There’s a place for you here,” she said. “Because this is my Sask Party, too.”

Alanna Koch’s presentation heavily played up her rural background, and focused on her vision for the future. She noted that when the government was first elected they were seen as a business-friendly government with a heart.

we need to focus on the people.”

Scott Moe was next, and his speech drew heavily on the policies he put forward during his campaign such as his idea for a ministry of international trade and export, as well as his commitment to maintain growth and prosperity and to return to a balanced budget.

In a particular show of strength, his speech was preceded by a video showing the 22 MLAs who endorsed him, saying “I stand with Scott.” Deputy premier Don Morgan used

the same line when he introduced Moe to the stage.

Not to be outdone, Ken Cheveldayoff was introduced by his brother – Kevin Cheveldayoff, general manager of the Winnipeg Jets.

The candidate, who entered and exited the stage to the tune Don’t Stop Believin’ also stuck to his theme as the grassroots candidate of the race.

It was not about endorsements, Cheveldayoff said.

“It’s about you, the grassroots people.”

Cheveldayoff’s speech wrapped up the presentations by the candidates.

The next big moment of the convention came soon after: the farewell address of Premier Brad Wall.

He started by observing that most party leaders usually give their last speech to the members on election night and it is usually a concession speech.

“Thank you all very, very much for making sure through the work you did that I never had to give that speech,” he said.

He also called for the party to unite behind the new leader to make sure “they don’t ever have to

give that speech either.”

Wall also said this speech would be more partisan than most he’s given lately. It was – as Wall proceeded to lay one final hammering on the NDP — a deliberate reminder to all the competing leadership campaigns of who their real opponents were. “We only have one of those,” Wall said.

In particular, Wall noted the NDP had changed. He pointed to NDP policies during Roy Romano’s era that were fiscally conservative and supportive of the resource sector.

“This current itineration of the NDP in Saskatchewan and Alberta is different,” said Wall, citing the $10 billion deficit budget of the NDP government in Alberta.

Wall also roasted NDP members in Saskatchewan who supported the controversial Leap Manifesto, ridiculing it as the “we hate bunnyhugs, perogies and Vi-Co manifesto.”

He also roasted the NDP for suggesting the government “check with the feds” on their madein-Saskatchewan climate change plan.

“We don’t work for the feds! This party works for the people of the province of Saskatchewan!”

He ended his speech on a more optimistic note by pointing to the change in attitude in the province.

Wall also alluded to a line he used during the 2007 provincial election when he said “hope beats fear.”

“The choice we offer in 2020 is still hope,” said Wall, who called on the party to come out united behind the new leader.

“Because this is the new Saskatchewan, and hope wins here,” Wall said.

Wall’s rousing speech was a clear reminder the outgoing Premier would be a hard act to follow for whoever the new leader was going to be.

But also notable was that his departure consisted only of a farewell speech; the main tribute to Wall had already happened at the party’s policy convention in November. After Wall left the stage and after the tears dried from people’s eyes, the focus of attention quickly turned to who the new leader would be.

Just after 6 p.m., the first ballot announcement came in and the results provided some early surprises.

There was an audible gasp in the hall when it was announced that Ken Cheveldayoff, who had led in fundraising totals and in some recent polls, placed third.

Instead, it was Alanna Koch who ended up in first place with 4,529 votes, with Scott Moe second at 4,483, Cheveldayoff at 4,177, Gord Wyant 3,696, Tina Beaudry-Mellor 226, and Rob Clarke (who had already withdrawn but was still on the ballot) 48. The razortight margin itself drew gasps in the hall as well.

It was even tighter on the second ballot, which saw Koch’s lead shrink to 38 votes over Moe, 4,533 to 4,495, as Beaudry-Mellor was next to drop from the ballot with 228 votes. Cheveldayoff had 4,202 votes, Wyant 3,698.

On ballot three, Wyant dropped off in fourth place with 3,780 votes, to 4,221 for Cheveldayoff, 4,544 for Moe and 4,598 for Koch.

Despite his disappointment with the showing, Wyant told reporters he believed his campaign had

made a difference.

“Our message has resonated with a lot of people in Saskatchewan,” said Wyant. “We’re going to continue to push that message forward.”

While waiting for fourth ballot results to come in, Cheveldayoff supporters erupted into a chant of “Chevy! Chevy! Chevy!” even though it was clear by now that his prospects were bleak.

When the fourth ballot was announced, it was the turn of the Moe supporters to erupt as their candidate moved into first place with 5,980, compared to 5,591 for Koch.

Cheveldayoff placed third with 4,844 votes and was eliminated.

“You know, the people are always right,” he said to reporters.

“We started today saying hey, we’ve done all that we could. We’ve doorknocked on more doors than anybody in this campaign, I believe. We’ve just worked really hard.”

All that was left was for the announcement of the winner. With Moe holding a strong lead going into the fifth ballot announcement, camera people surrounded the Moe section in anticipation of his victory.

When Moe was announced as the winner, all bedlam broke loose in the Moe section. The candidate accepted the congratula-

tions and hugs of supporters and MLAs. He eventually found his way through the mob scene up to the podium along with his family, where Premier Wall raised Moe’s hand in victory.

It was a thrilling end to a long and emotional day for party members.

One MLA who was pleased with how things had unfolded was Cut Knife-Turtleford’s Larry Doke, Minister of Government Relations.

Doke had encouraged Moe to enter the leadership contest, he said, and he made it known he thinks Moe is up to the job of being premier.

“I think Scott, you know, he’s young, he’s got a vision, he’s not afraid to take a stance whether it be the carbon tax or anything along those lines. So he’s been well groomed this last six years as Environment Minister, and Advanced Education, so I think we’re in good hands.”

Doke also believes that the Sask Party is strong going forward after this leadership race.

“I think it’s pretty good — 27,000 members now, and you know, we’re halfway through until the next election, so I think we’re in real good shape. We’ve got three by-elections coming up here; if we can knock those off, we’ll be in great shape.”

North Battleford’s historic corner stores North Battleford’s corner stores were a vital fixture of the city over the years. They provided work and an income for hundreds of our citizens. And often, perhaps most of the time, they provided living quarters for families, usually on the top floor over the store. Inexpensive rent to be sure. In addition, families had ready access to food and confectionaries at wholesale prices. It was a good life.

I intend to catalogue 35 corner stores. There are only two left in operation.

The big chain stores forced most of them to close.

They couldn’t compete. I give names, street addresses, streets on which they are located and the original names of the streets (ie., 95th Street was originally called , “Richard Street” (My family and I lived on Richard Street in a wartime house for 15 months).

There was never a corner store on 95th Street.

There are only two corner stores still in business and both of them are thriving – doing very well thank you. One is Foodland located strategically at 18th Avenue and 110th Street. It offers a full line of produce, dairy products and confectionaries.

In addition it has a laundromat and Chester Fried Chicken. It boasts a great location kitty-corner to the North Battleford Comprehensive High School, and of course, provides a multi service establishment for the surrounding area.

In this installment, I will showcase Wally’s Food Basket.

Roman and Elaine Nychyk, our neighbours on Gregory Drive, bought Wally’s Food Basket (corner of 11th Avenue and 107th Street) from Wally Dubnyk in 1973 and owned it for 32 years (they sold the store in 2005).

Elaine also operated a Wally’s Food Store for 10 years on 100th Street in the mini mall (1500 block - south of the Subway outlet).

The stores boasted a full line of canned goods, produce, and meat and other amenities like an ice machine.

In addition, the Nychyks were extremely busy with a catering business.

It would be an understatement to say that Roman and Elaine were very

hard workers. Running the stores was labour intensive.

The Nychyks made their stores into a highly profitable enterprise. (Sources: Lyle Meckling; North Battleford Archives) I can personally attest to the convenience of corner stores. My wife and baby son and I lived on the corner of 15th Avenue and 11th Street (in a fourplex) when we moved to

North Battleford in 1970.

Our convenience store was Louis Bandet’s corner store located at 1402 – 104th Street. The store ran a good line of canned goods, dairy products, preserved meats and candies, licorice and chocolate bars, etc. As I recall, the Bandet family lived upstairs above the store. I remember that the Bandet children were strikingly good looking.

And they all helped their dad run the store.

Wednesday, Crown prosecutor Chris Browne was in court for more evidence from the RCMP, and the defendant’s son Sheldon Stanley was also called to the stand.

In speaking to reporters following Tuesday’s testimony, Boushie’s cousin Jade Tootoosis, said she and her family planned to continue to attend the trial every day. She also urged people interested to show up at the proceedings.

“It’s hard on us to sit there and to hear, just to be in there,” said Tootoosis. “I just want to encourage people to come out for themselves, come bear witness and hear it for themselves as everything unfolds, and just to be present. I encourage people to come out. It is open to the public to attend.”

Among the family attending the trial is Boushie’s mother, Debbie Baptiste.

RCMP to redirect traffic ‘as needed’

The Gerald Stanley trial, in which the RM of Glenside farmer is accused of second-degree murder of Colten Boushie, has attracted national attention, and RCMP say they will close roads around the Court of Queens Bench in Battleford “as needed.”

Court proceedings in the Battlefords regarding the trial have attracted a number of people inside and outside local courthouses, including family members of those involved, members of the public, media, activists, protestors, and others.

According to RCMP, police will monitor the area around Court of Queen’s Bench and redirect traffic according to an ongoing risk assessment.

Battleford Central School and St. Vital School are located across the street from Court of Queen’s Bench in Battleford, while residences are located to the west, the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame to the south, and Home Hardware to the east.

Third annual

Round dance Feb. 2

The third annual round dance honouring Allen Sapp and Walking With Our Sisters will take place Friday, Feb. 2 at the Don Ross Centre gymnasium.

The Walking With Our Sisters event consists of two main parts. The first is a feast, which takes place from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Chapel Gallery, while the round dance is the second part.

The dance is set to begin at 7 p.m. and last until midnight. Organizers ask participants to enter door 6 at the Don Ross Centre.

The first 20 singers will be honoured. There will be giveaways and a canteen on site.

No alcohol or drugs are allowed and security will be on site.

Sunchild Law and Kanaweyimik Child and Family Services are among the event’s sponsors.

BCP season: three full-length productions planned

By Donna Challis 2018 is almost a month old and Battlefords Community Players are busy preparing three full-length productions.

We did take a break to enjoy the holiday season but got right back to work putting together casts and crews to make the remainder of the season exciting for everyone.

By Rosemarie Stadnyk Despite the wintery weather, members attended the art club in the craft room at the Don Ross Center. Artists worked on drawings, paintings and mixed media.

Several artists are practising skills learned at recent workshops. Alcohol inks on yupo paper and modeling paste on canvas are techniques being experienced by art club members.

On Feb. 6, there is a mini meeting to decide on activities for the remainder of the year.

Retailles, a show by the internationally recognized artist, Joe Fafard, is at the Chapel Gallery.

The public is invited to the exhibition reception on Friday, Feb. 15 form 5 to 9 p.m.

Our feature artist this week is Elaine Mitchell.

On Feb. 10, we are presenting a murder mystery at Borden as a fundraiser for the Borden Lions Club.

We are very happy to be able to help local groups present something a little different to their community. Keep us in mind if you are looking for someone to provide entertainment for your fundraiser or event.

First up is a comedy by Norma Foster featuring Fraser Glen and Cheryl Olson as David and Lucy in the show On A First Name Basis. This witty, very funny show will be presented Feb. 27 (show only) and for dinner theatre on March 1, 2, 3. The performances are taking place at our clubhouse at 102-26th Street in Battleford and seating is limited, so purchase soon.

Next up is a special show that will be our entry in the 2018 TheatreFest competition in Weyburn.

On March 16, for one show only, BadAx Productions from Saskatoon will be presenting their show Naked Tourist, Sacred Mountain to the Battle-

fords. This show had a very successful run as a part of Live Five and they are very exciting to be bringing the work to our community.

The production is being presented in the BCP Clubhouse and tickets are available by calling our number at 446-3133. There is no nudity in the show and it is suitable for all ages.

While the parts are filled, the production crews are not so if you would like to get involved there is still lots of time and space. Just give us a call.

Plans are underway for a full four-show season again next year and as always we will be looking for new members to join our team. Battlefords Community Players has had a great deal of success this year with at least 10 new members participating in their first production with us. The opportunity is open to everyone.

Jan. 26 found four tables playing Canasta in the Do Drop In. It was a rather poor visibility day but one car came from town and one from Edam, so there were enough for a good afternoon of play. Top score went to Art Jones and Gwen Lacerte, second high were Charles Walker and Gail Hilderman and third were Arlene Walker and Shirley Gough. Snacking during games is the way we do it, and lots of visiting along with that.

The Borden United Church held their annual meeting the afternoon of Jan. 28 after the regular church service. Reports were heard from Chair Sandra Long, minister Gayle Wensley, secretarytreasurer Lorraine Olinyk and ministry and personnel committee Pamela Pidwerbesky and Helen Sutherland. On the board with Sandra and Lorraine are Jean Brooke, Jean Sawchyn, Gloria Derbowka and Pamela. It was decided the church would again serve hamburgers and hot dogs at the Borden Farmers’ Market this year. The church, with the Anglicans, will host the Shrove Tuesday Pancake/Sausage supper on Feb. 13 in the Borden Seniors Room from 5 to 6:30 p.m. There will be a St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon on Friday, March 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., serving stew and soup along with bread, sweets and beverages. Celtic Country will provide Irish music.

The United Church hosts a Good Friday service with the Anglican members on March 30 at 11 a.m., with lunch to follow.

Then he took all of this info and toasted everyone he had spoken to, highlighting how Radisson had raised the funds for the Communiplex, the story of the bear sculpture by the Town Office, getting a haircut and waxing at the salon, trying to ballroom dance and many more humorous incidents that happened during the past week. After the show, Jonny posed for photos and handed out autographed photos of himself.

Books aside, time for robots

The Unity Composite High School library was used for more than books and reading on Saturday, Jan. 20 when it was transformed into a competition ring for bots and robotics.

Mr. Whyte, teacher at UCHS, has expanded the UCHS robotics program in its third year to include a junior division. The junior division was created so that interested students could develop their love of robotics and develop their skills a little earlier to advance into the senior division that competes across the province.

Thanks to some generous community sponsors, the program was able to purchase some equipment, build a competition ring as well as other necessary materials for progression of the robotics program.

Junior students on Jan. 20 competed in teams with their creation in a number of showcases earning points for the capability and functionality of their robots, followed by a skills competition. Senior robotics students performed the judging and timing.

While the audience was small it didn’t diminish the energy and enthusiasm of

participants who were anxious to not only demonstrate their robot’s abilities, but their skills in operation of their creation.

Teams were awarded points on such things as picking off rings from a points pole, moving objects in the ring or even the ability to dump a giant load of colored rings for a jackpot of points.

Maneuverability and steadiness seemed to be the key partnership with the operator and robot.

Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre executive director Erin Katerynych received a donation of $1,206 from Aaron Cadrin of the Meota Combines for the Battlefords Empty Stocking Fund, which the team raised during a game against the Maymont Settlers on Dec. 23. It was the second year in a row the Meota Combines have raised money for the Battlefords Empty Stocking Fund. After raising $1,138 last year during a game against the Battleford Beaver Blues, the Saskatchewan Prairie Hockey League team decided they wanted to do it again and held their second annual fundraiser in 2017. Live feed installed at Wilkie rink Submitted

After the renovations throughout the entire Wilkie Saskcan Community Center, after all of us getting back into our rink and seeing the changes, the new paint, and the new railings that surround the beautiful lobby seats, it seemed there was something else that the Wilkie Saskcan Community Center needed.

The Wilkie Curling Rink Lounge went through a whole facelift throughout the construction phase. A wall was taken out to open the lounge, new bathrooms were made larger, new carpet and linoleum went on the floors, and the bar was updated. Now one can sit and watch the curlers curl without the wall blocking their view.

During the Wilkie Outlaw senior hockey game, the curling rink lounge opens its doors for anyone wanting a refreshment of any kind and everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the new lounge. People flood at the end of every period to talk about the game and to visit. With a great hockey spirit amidst the curling rink lounge, they all hurry back, the hockey game resumes and the staff prepares for the next whirlwind of visitors.

Helen Urlacher who oversees running the lounge, had an idea for a “live feed” from the arena into the lounge, as some people wanted to finish their refreshment but didn’t want to miss the action on the ice. She remembered how Ryan Kobelsky had been so generous with his time and talents in getting the live feed up and ready for Kraft Hockeyville 2017 announcement for the Top Two winners. She approached him about having a live feed – whether it would be possible and what the cost would be.

The idea of the live feed became reality as Ryan put together a package with the cost being very reasonable.

Urlacher gave the presentation to Steven Lutsch, recreation director, and the

Wilkie Recreation Board and Town of Wilkie, and talked to the curling club and Outlaws about the idea.

Everyone was excited, and she was able with the help of businesses to cover all the costs of the installation of the live feed - Maximum

The first live feed was tested at the Wilkie Outlaws Wing Night on Dec. 23 and was very successful. The feed was put into the lounge for the first game in 2018, much to the delight of everyone!

The support of local and area businesses, the Recreation Board, the Town of Wilkie and clubs have made this addition to the Saskcan Community Centre another first for Wilkie, as a live feed is presently not in any other arenas in our area! This is going to be a great addition to the community center and to the organizations that use the center throughout the year.

North Stars blank Klippers to start home stand

The Kindersley Klippers are having a hard time trying to score on Battlefords North Stars netminder Taryn Kotchorek.

As a result of a 5-0 win for the North Stars at the Civic Centre Tuesday night, all three of Kotchorek’s shutouts this year have come against the Klippers.

In fact, five of his 12 career shutouts have occurred when the two sides play one other.

“I don’t think there’s a secret to that happening or anything like that,” Kotchorek smiled after the game.

“We have a pretty good record against them and in games like this one, our guys do a really good job of shutting down their opportunities.”

The North Stars defence did an excellent job of limiting the Klippers’ offensive chances Tuesday night, as the visitors were limited to 19 shots on goal.

Although he wasn’t challenged often, Kotchorek made the big saves when he was called upon,

with his best coming on a second period power play as he came across the crease to rob Brody Ryberg.

“We always had a guy up high so we were able to limit their odd-man rushes,” Kotchorek said. “We never really gave them chances and all of our skaters did a great job of forcing them to take a lot of outside shots, which makes things a lot easier for me.”

Up front, the North Stars had a well-balanced offensive attack as they fired 48 shots at the Klippers net.

Captain Layne Young had a pair of assists to increase his Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League leading point total to 82, while Cole Johnson and Garan Magnes had a goal and an assist each.

“Everybody bought in tonight from the bottom up, and when we do that we have a good chance of coming away with the win,” said Johnson, who now has 11 goals in nine games since being acquired from the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Lloydminster Bobcats at the trade deadline.

“This was probably our best team performance since I’ve been here and that’s what we need to keep doing in order to have a long playoff run.”

Conor Jensen, Keith Anderson and Brad Girard also scored for the North Stars, who improved their record to 33-8-2-0 for the season and are seven points back of the league leading Nipawin Hawks.

Justen Close got the start in goal for the Klippers and made 30 saves before being pulled after allowing four goals in 40 minutes of play.

Zach Johnson made his SJHL debut in the third period and stopped 13 shots for the visitors, who now have an 18-18-3-2 record and are in eighth place in the standings..

Tuesday’s triumph marked the start of a seven game home stand for the North Stars, which will continue Friday night at 7:30 p.m. against the Estevan Bruins.

The Melville Millionaires will come to town Saturday and the La Ronge Ice Wolves will visit here Tuesday, with those games also starting at 7:30 p.m.

Three members of the Battlefords Gymnastics Club travelled outside of Saskatchewan for the first time in their history last month.

Danielle Clark, Keifer Gidych and Kelsee Douglas represented the club in the rhythmic gymnastics division at the Gym Power Competition that took place in Edmonton on Saturday, Jan. 14.

“That was the first time we had sent provincial level athletes anywhere as well, and it was an important weekend for us for a couple of reasons,” Clark said.

“For those here in the Battlefords, it shows that our club is starting to travel and competing elsewhere, while it also gave us a chance to make connections with competitors from Alberta and British Columbia that were in Edmonton for the event.”

Another major change

for the team was the venue for the Gym Power Competition, as the University of Alberta’s Butterdome is far bigger than most buildings than local gymnasts have competed at in the past.

“It’s one of the only competitions in Canada that has acrobatic, artistic, rhythmic and trampoline disciplines going on at the same time,” Clark said.

“For instance, events in the province are usually held in high schools or public schools, so the size of the venue that we competed in was much larger when it came to the floor and the number of competitors.”

Douglas led the way with first place finishes in the ball, hoop and allaround events in the provincial level 6A event.

She also finished second in the clubs event and also received a special for best pivots.

Gidych, meanwhile, was competing in her first ever competition and earned silver medals in the ball and all-around events in the Provincial Level 6A division.

She also placed third in the hoop and fourth in the clubs events.

“Keifer was only able to compete last year at our year-end event here at the club, but that’s more of a mock competition and completely different from what she faced in Edmonton,” Clark said.

“For her to perform that well in a big event was amazing.”

The next rhythmic competition for the club will be in Clavet on Feb. 10 and 11, while the next artistic event will take place in Humboldt on Feb. 3.

All eight teams in the Saskatchewan West Hockey League now know what awaits them in the playoffs as the best-of-three quarter-final matchups were set following the conclusion of their regular season schedule Saturday.

The biggest story from the final weekend of league play came Friday night in Unity, as the host Miners handed the Wilkie Outlaws their first loss of the season in a 9-5 affair.

Jake McMillan and Behn Robertson led the way for the Miners on offence as they both scored a goal and had five assists.

Despite the setback, the Outlaws had already wrapped up the first overall seed for the playoffs with a 19-1 record.

Their opponent will be the eighth ranked Luseland Mallards, who finished at the bottom of the standings with a 4-15-1 mark.

The best-of-three series between the Outlaws and Mallards is set to begin Friday at 8:30 p.m. at the SaskCan Community Centre in Wilkie.

The second game will be held at the Luseland Memorial Arena on Sunday at 3 p.m.

A third game, if needed, would be held in Wilkie on Friday, Feb. 9 at 8:30 p.m.

The Macklin Mohawks finished second in the regular season standings with a 12-7-1 record and will now face the seventh seeded Kerrobert Tigers, who ended the year with a 7-11-2 mark.

ter-final matchup were still being determined, but it is expected that the series will begin Friday night in Macklin.

The SWHL playoffs will get underway Thursday night in Biggar, as the sixth seeded Nationals will host the third ranked Kindersley Red Lions in a 8:30 p.m. battle at the Biggar Jubliee Stadium.

The Red Lions had a 11-7-2 record and finished just one point back of the Mohawks in the final standings, while the Nationals had a 9-10-1 mark.

Both teams will return to the ice Friday in Kindersley for an 8:30 p.m. clash at the West Central Events Centre.

A third game, if required, will take place in Kindersley on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.

The other quarter-final series will be between the fourth and fifth seeds as the 9-7-4 Eatonia Huskies will face the 9-10-1 Miners.

The Miners actually finished tied on points with the Nationals but earned the fifth spot by winning all three of their head-tohead meetings.

The Eatonia Memorial Arena will play host to the opening game of the series Friday night at 8:30 p.m., with the Unity Community Centre hosting the second contest between the two sides on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 8 p.m.

If needed, a third and deciding game will be held in Eatonia at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11.

will then advance to a bestof-five semifinal series followed by a best-of-five final.

Meanwhile, all eight SWHL teams are competing for senior provincial titles over the next couple of months.

In the ‘A’ bracket, the Outlaws will be facing the Hillmond Hitmen in a best-of-three series that begins in Wilkie on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 8 p.m.

The Red Lions, meanwhile, will be taking on the Shaunavon Badgers in a first round series that starts in Kindersley Sunday at 7 p.m.

In the ‘B’ bracket, the Miners will open up a two-game total goal series with the Eston Ramblers in Eston on Friday, Feb. 9 at 8:30 p.m.

The second game will take place in Unity on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 8 p.m.

The Nationals are also in that division and will play the Beechy Bombers in a series that doesn’t begin until March 2.

In the ‘C’ bracket, the Mohawks started their two-game total goal series Tuesday night as they lost 4-1 to the Hafford Hawks of the Saskatchewan Prairie Hockey League.

The second game will take place on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 8 p.m. in Macklin.

The Tigers will open up their best-of-two total goal series Saturday at 8 p.m. on the road against the Lanigan Pirates, with the second game taking place in Kerrobert on Saturday, Feb. 17.

The Huskies will face either the Hodgeville Huskies or the Gull Lake Greyhounds in a series that is expected to get underway in late February.

The Mallards, who are the lone team in the SWHL competing in the ‘D’ bracket, will start their two-game total goal series on Saturday, Feb. 10 against the Loreburn 19’ers. at 7:30 p.m.

The second game will be held in Luseland on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m.

The SPHL’s Edam Three Stars are also in the ‘D’ bracket, with their two-game total goal series against the Kenaston Blizzards starting in Edam on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 8:30 p.m.

Jonny Harris showcases Radisson for national audience

Waxed armpit hair, rink burgers, and the disappearing testicles of the Red Bull by the highway were some of the quirks in Jonny Harris’s stand-up set appearing as part of the episode of CBC’s Still Standing that will feature Radisson.

Still Standing is a CBC show that profiles the country’s smaller communities, hosted by comedian/actor Jonny Harris, who stars as Const. George Crabtree in the network’s show Murdoch Mysteries.

Still Standing’s format involves filming segments in which Harris interviews residents and talks to them about the distinctive features of particular towns.

The show also features Harris doing stand-up in front of residents and those interviewed for the clips, made of material he and a team come up with while spending a week in respective communities.

Some general comments of Harris’s during the performance included being the child of a philosophy professor, and shots at the Maple Leafs.

One way they got the word out for fundraising for the arena was by stopping at the Toronto Star offices and getting a story written about the cause. The fundraising campaign grew in popularity, and attracted the attention of the likes of Ken Dryden and Ron MacLean.

Last paper, I was not allowed to talk about it in case I jinxed it but there is a new 16 year old in our house so wishing a belated happy birthday to Landon, and now not only is he the tallest member of our household he is also the newest driver in our household.

The talk around town has been: residents still waiting for answers on the pungent odor experienced on Jan. 2 with press releases indicating investigation is still underway at the Trevita plant, where it was deemed to have come from. Town crews are performing tree trimming in the warmer weather as well as with horticultural timing in mind. TransGas proceeded with an announced natural gas burn as part of regular maintenance, taking place at their station east of town that started Jan. 19 and continued for several days. At UCHS, semester two has begun with exams now over and the new semester now under way. There is still plenty of basketball on the go and curlers will be readying themselves in final preparations for this month’s district and regional playdowns. Drama club continue rehearsals for their spring production and regional drama festival piece. SLC, yearbook committee, SADD, and the ACTIVATE team are all busy on the go with a number of activities. The robotics team held their junior fun day/competition on Jan. 20 in the library, an excellent opportunity for showcasing their machines and skills in operation. The senior robotics team will be in final preparations for their upcoming competitions that begin in March.

Students are excited to experience the sport of curling and will enjoy a curling funspiel, today, Feb. 2.

Skating will be next on the fun-o-meter for students.

Once the Family Day and February break is over, the band and choir students will begin rehearsals for their annual music festival performances.

The men’s bonspiel wrapped up a successful, and fun week of curling and the rink action will continue with a plethora of other events on the curling agenda including Northern Men’s senior curling playdowns next weekend, followed by the annual Oil Person’s bonspiel the first weekend in March. The annual Bramiche Farms ladies spiel will follow that.

Unity curling club would like to wish the best to our high school teams soon competing in their respective district and regional curling playdowns.

The hockey rink is starting to exhibit playoff fever as all teams have now entered their respective league and provincial playoff quests, each team hoping to add a banner to the rafters as a result of their playdown experiences. The Midget AA Lazers continue to be in the top 3 of their league as they head into playoff season. As we’ve said many times, there is always room for fans in the stands so why not come out and support your favorite player or team during the last part of this year’s hockey season.

Congratulations and thank you to Unity Credit Union for their contribution of $900 to the Unity Fire department generated from their dress down days contributions. The UFD was also beneficiary of a Co-op initiative in the fall Fuel Good with Co-op, as well as other donors recognizing the needs of the crews and well as the benefits of our volunteer fire fighters. This community continues to band together for the causes that matter!

Copies of The Outlaw History Book: 100 Years of Terror, compiled by former Wilkie resident Linda Clifford and editor of the Press Herald, Helena Long, was given to the president of The Fernie Ghostriders, Barb Anderson, Tracey Audia, President of Fernie Minor Hockey, Mayor Giuliano, and to the owner of The Bridge Bistro Restaurant in Fernie. This exchange of gifts between Wilkie and Fernie will be remembered by both communities as a new founded Sister City, tucked amongst the mountains.

The next morning, coffee and conversation and then down to business. The Kraft Hockeyville sign and the inflatable puck were brought along with Barb Anderson, Tracey Audia, Mayor Mary Giuliano, and myself, Helen Urlacher, who took to the streets and

Wilkie’s support for Fernie, B.C.’s campaign to become the 2018 Kraft Hockeyville winner was met with open arms from the community of Fernie.

All the eastern Kootaney region knows there is support coming from not only Saskatchewan, but Alberta as well as the West Coast of British Columbia.

On a whim, Wilkie Delta Co-op was approached for any 2018 Kraft Hockeyville signs in order to send to Fernie. Amanda Roth, manager at the Wilkie Delta Co-op when asked; found the signs and donated all of them to Fernie’s bid! Special thanks!

Then the question was how to get the signs to Fernie. Upon contacting Mayor Mary Giuliano, Mayor of Fernie, she provided the address for them to be sent by bus. This seemed so impersonal. The decision was then made to hand deliver the signs to Fernie, as organizers of the Wilkie’s campaign for Hockeyville 2017 felt that this was the right thing to do. One can only help someone from behind a computer screen, or over the phone via texting/talking. The magic of the Kraft Hockeyville sign had to be shown. Wilkie has seen and felt that magic itself once before, as well as the many other communities that have had the pleasure of entering the Hockeyville campaign.

The truck was packed up at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19; along with luggage, winter gear, the signs, gifts from the Town of Wilkie, as well as gifts from the Wilkie Outlaw Executives and Senior Outlaws, for the Mayor of Fernie.

Down through Hanna, Alta,, on to Drumheller via Calgary, the scenery seemed to come alive with terrain that can take one’s breath away. But once one could see the mountains in the distance, the reality of the journey seemed to set in.

The windmills at Pincher Creek, Alta., was a signal of the descent up onto the Crow’s Nest Pass and the southern B.C. Kootaney region. On descending and seeing the Highway sign saying Fernie 115 km, one knew that this Paying it Forward journey would be one no one would ever forget.

The Welcome to Sparwood sign passed by the window, and right away it was like the Mayor of Fernie knew we were close.

The message to meet within an hour and a half was arranged.

Finally, the Welcome to Fernie sign was seen and, instantly, the emotions were released. We had made it, it was so surreal. Next was to meet with Mayor Mary Giuliano, her husband Nick Giuliano,

PUBLIC NOTICE is hereby given that the Council of the Rural Municipality of Meeting Lake No. 466 intends to consider the adoption of a bylaw to amend the Zoning Bylaw No. 07/14 under the Planning and Development Act, 2007.

INTENT OF ZONING BYLAW AMENDMENT: The proposed amendments will further clarify policies to improve interpretation and implementation of the Zoning Bylaw. The amendments are summarized below: 1. Section 2: “Definitions” is amended by adding the following definitions: Accessory, Farm-Related; Aggregate Resource; Intensive Livestock Operation; Mobile Home; Resource-Based Uses.

2. Section 7: “Agriculture Resource District (AR)” is amended by removing it in its entirety and is replaced with a new Section.

PUBLIC INSPECTION: Any person may inspect the proposed bylaw to amend the Zoning Bylaw during regular office hours at the RM of Meeting Lake No. 466 municipal office. Copies are available at cost.

PUBLIC HEARING: The Public Hearing shall be held on February 8, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the RM of Meeting Lake No. 466 municipal office to hear any person that wants to comment on the proposed Zoning Bylaw amendments. Good Samaritan brings blessings to the Battlefords

It is easy to get caught up in the day and lose sight of how small of a population there is in the province of Saskatchewan. With just barely over a million people, and almost 50 per cent of citizens residing in our two major cities, the isolation of those in small communities makes for strong ties to the nearest city. Medstead has these well-fortified ties to the city of North Battleford.

These ties mean mutual support, such as donations to local events and providing employment to residents of surrounding villages. Bonds such as these are ideally symbiotic, something whose reciprocation is often difficult to achieve from the footing of a small village or community.

This posed just a small obstacle for Medstead

edstead News Good Samaritan, Heather Pederson, who created and co-ordinated a series of “blessing bags” for the less fortunate in the Battlefords. Pederson indicates that her friend, Barry Hannah of Red Deer, Alta, delivered flowers, chocolate, cards and toys to the hospital and Ronald McDonald houses this past Christmas. Pederson and her mother lent a hand and Heather notes, “His project got me thinking that I could do something in my own community to ‘spread smiles’” After posting to Facebook a blurb of her intentions and welcoming donations, either items or financial, it was not long before funds and materials

To fill the bags, Chandra Pederson, village librarian, allowed for the use of the Medstead library. Christine Freethy and Heather Pederson met at the library to sort items and fill the bags. These blessing bags contained gum, toothbrushes and toothpaste, hot chocolate and a chocolate bar, shampoo and conditioner, lotion, Kleenex, Emergen C, instant coffee, hand warmers, tuna and crackers, basic first aid items, and feminine products in addition to some other small items. These items may seem commonplace, but when the cold is biting, the issue of homelessness grows by nature in its severity. When larger gestures aren’t being seen in the city, small scale initiatives step up and make a difference. Is it not wonderful to have winter back again?

Many people are happy to get some fresh snow even if most of it blew away. It did very little for snowmobiling but then most roads are still open. The last while has been very interesting for me as I had an opportunity to speak with and book some very high profile entertainers that want to come to Rabbit Lake. It is a place that

performers want to be able to add to their resume.

Feb. 22 - We are planning a supper and show with Donny Parenteau coming back to town in order to help us and the Community Hall pay for their new furnace. It cost a lot to replace and we all need your help. This will be a joint venture with the Sunrise Circle Seniors and the Community hall board. For this show and a beef supper, advance tickets are $25, available until Tuesday the 20th at 5 p.m. Tickets at the door are $30.

Little words say what you mean; big words are often gobbledygook Ed, my old neighbour from Saskatchewan, has a great dislike for the game of Scrabble.

“It is a game that gives too few points to ordinary words, and gives too many points for obscure, long-lettered, words,” Ed insists.

A holiday game of Scrabble still has my old neighbour grumbling.

Ed wrote down two of the words a relative used in the game.

He asked me if I knew what the two words meant.

I had no quick definitions of pediculosis and microscopical from his game.

Ed now knows pediculosis means to be infected with lice, and that micro-

scopical means too small to be seen by the human eye, but large enough to be studied under a microscope.

I agree with Ed, that big words may be limited in meaning and understood only by a select few.

I also like little words that are recognized by all to mean big things, such as sky, land, air, sun, man, woman, love, life, God, etc.

Too many big words may mean confusion or words that become gobbledygook or meaningless.

It is good to consider our words for even short words like, ‘yes’ and ‘no,’ can require a great deal of thought at times.

Jesus says, “For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.”

Our words reflect what is stored up in our hearts.

Jesus also cautions: “But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words, you will be condemned.”

Words come out of our mouths readily and often thoughtlessly.

Most of us will admit that we have had our words come back to bite us.

Sadly, we may have little regard for the power

of our words or God’s words.

We may ignore that the word of God is living and active, dividing soul and spirit, and judging the thoughts and attitudes of our hearts.

Our thoughts and words, as well as our actions, are never hidden from God who holds us accountable for them.

Because we are accountable to God, it is always time for us to fix our thoughts, words, and actions on Jesus.

God made Him (Jesus) who had no sin to be sin for us so that by faith in him, we might become the righteousness of God; those who are eager to serve God, instead of sin.
