B’ford school zones reduced to 30 km/h

Some noticeable changes are coming for motorists in and around school zones and playgrounds in Battleford.

Town council passed a Playground and School Safety Bylaw at their meeting Monday.

The main change will be a reduction in speed from 40 km/h to 30 km/h on streets at all parks, playgrounds and school zones in the town limits.

Those include ACT Park,

Battleford Springs subdivision playground, Battleford West subdivision playground, Kinsmen Park on 17th Street West, Battleford Central School on 25th Street West, Heritage Christian School on 20th Street West and St. Vital Catholic School on 23rd Street West.

On 23rd Street between 2nd Avenue West and 3rd Avenue West, there will be a “bus only” zone between the hours of 8 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, from Sept.

1 to June 30.

Also, a parent pick up/ drop off zone will be created on the west side of 2nd Avenue West between 23rd Street and 25th Street for Battleford Central School Monday through Friday, from Sept. 1 to June 30.

Also in the bylaw, a one-way street will be created from west to east on 25th Street from 3rd Avenue West to 2nd Avenue West. Until now, the street has up to now been open to two-way traffic.

Finally, the bylaw creates “residential permit

parking only” year round on the north side of the one-way portion of 25th Street.

Normally, these sorts of changes would have been addressed by new provisions in the Traffic Bylaw, but that bylaw is currently undergoing revision and will not be ready in time for the school year.

As a result, the decision was made to bring in a Playground and School Safety Bylaw incorporating these changes.

ning department told council that once the current traffic bylaw is ready, all these changes will be incorporated into the traffic bylaw and the Playground and School Safety Bylaw will be repealed.

The new bylaw passed in three readings by 5-0 votes. As Councillor Doug Laing explained Monday, the reason the new bylaw was introduced and passed in one meeting was because “school starts right away.”

Colten Boushie’s family launches civil action

Civil actions have been launched in connection to the shooting death of Colten Boushie in August 2016 .

Two statements of claim have been filed in Queen’s Bench Court in the Saskatoon judicial district — one against Gerald Stanley and the other names several defendants including the Attorney General of Canada and seven individual members of the RCMP. The lawsuit against the RCMP was filed on behalf of plaintiffs Debbie Baptiste, Jace Troy Boushie and Boyblue Boushie, the mother and two brothers of Colten Boushie. In the RCMP action, Debbie is seeking $550,000 in overall

damages, Jace Boushie $450,000 and Boyblue Boushie $450,000.

These amounts would include general damages, damages for pecuniary and other losses, special damages and punitive damages of $200,000 each. In addition, the plaintiffs are also seeking interest, costs and disbursements, and such further relief that the court might determine.

The lawsuit focuses on the search conducted at the Boushie home on the night of Aug. 9. The plaintiffs allege Charter of Rights and Freedoms infringement. The lawsuit alleges that “without attempting to obtain the consent of Debbie, Jace or Boyblue, the search officers conducted a planned, deliberate and warrantless search of the

home.”

“The search officers’ warrantless search of the home was unreasonable and violated the plaintiffs’ constitutionally enshrined right to be secure against unreasonable search under section 8 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.”

The statement of claim also states the warrantless search violated section 15, and that the “search officers’ conduct discriminated against the plaintiffs on the basis of their race.”

The statement of claim also accused the RCMP of misfeasance of public office, stating the search officers unlawfully searched the home, failed to maintain the integrity of the law, law enforcement and the administration of justice, failed to perform their duties promptly,

Student safety paramount Continued from Front “We want to get those signs up and those speed limits dropped, which is one of the most important things, I think anyways, to get that speed limit down,” said Laing.

The issue had been on the Town’s radar for a while. Earlier this year, town officials had spoken to students at St. Vital School and with officials at Living Sky School Division on the safety issues and received input.

Councillor Kevin Russell, who served as deputy mayor at the meeting, explained to reporters that safety was the prime concern.

“Our first initiative ... is

student safety, and parent safety,” said Russell.

The main impact will be the reduced speed at all schools and playgrounds.

Russell acknowledged there has been high traffic at those locations.

The reduced speed limit of 30 km/h in school zones brings Battleford in line with other Saskatchewan communities such as North Battleford and Saskatoon, where reduced speeds have been in place for some time.

“We just adapted with everybody else to have the 30 km/h speed limit,” said Russell. “Slower is better. Anything that makes the children safer, we believe, is the best part of the

whole initiative.”

The 30 km/h signs are on order now, and should go up as soon as those arrive.

Now the changes are approved, the intention is for the public safety officer to be out in the community implementing the changes.

Fines are not yet in place, and Russell indicated to reporters the immediate priority will be getting the information out to people and educating people.

“It will be a learning curve for everybody,” said Russell.

Russell adds that anyone with questions or concerns is encouraged to contact the Town of Battleford.

Damages alleged by the claimants include depression, physical and emotional distress, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, nervous shock, mental anguish, interference with normal sleeping patterns, loss of enjoyment of life, loss of income and suicidal ideation.

The other lawsuit is against Gerald Stanley, who was charged but later acquitted of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Colten Boushie.

That lawsuit is being brought by Debbie Baptiste, administrator of the estate of Colten Boushie, and is seeking damages for wrongful death.

The statement of claim against Stanley alleges the death of Boushie was “a direct result of the negligent, reckless or intentional acts of the defendant, Gerald Stanley.”

Among the particulars cited in the claim are failure to properly assess the initial risk, failure to monitor any ongoing risk,

failure to contact any authorities, administering excessive force when it was uncalled for, fatally shooting Colten Boushie at point-blank range when he represented no risk, illegal storage of firearms on his property, failure to render any emergency medical assistance, failure to contact any authorities on a timely basis after the shooting, failure to properly maintain and store firearms and negligently brandishing of firearms.

The plaintiff is claiming under the Fatal Accidents Act the amounts of $30,000 to the mother Debbie Baptiste, $20,000 in funeral expenses, $60,000 in grief counselling and $60,000 in out-ofpocket expenses.

In addition, the plaintiff Debbie Baptiste is also claiming lost employment earnings of $100,000 and is seeking an unspecified amount of special damages to be proven at trial as well as aggravated/punitive damages in the amount of $200,000. Costs and interest are being sought as well.

RCMP make statement in response to Murphy Staff Saskatchewan RCMP have released a statement in response to remarks made by lawyer Chris Murphy in which he stated the RCMP in Saskatchewan interact with Indigenous individuals differently than non-Indigenous individuals.

“Every day Saskatchewan RCMP officers and employees work collaboratively with our communities both Indigenous and non-Indigenous,” said A/Commr. Curtis Zablocki, Saskatchewan RCMP commanding officer.

“The Saskatchewan RCMP is committed to continue supporting and further developing these positive relationships.”

“This lawsuit will hold the person responsible for Colten’s wrongful death accountable. Nothing can return Colten to his family, yet the Boushie family will continue its relentless pursuit of justice for Colten.”

Both Sunchild and Chris Murphy, of Murphys law firm, Toronto, are representing Boushie’s family in the claim against the RCMP. “We expect that this lawsuit will force the RCMP to look deep within itself and examine the manner in which the RCMP interacts with the Indigenous citizens of Canada,” said Murphy in a statement.

“There can be no true reconciliation until the RCMP, itself, acknowledges that the callous manner in which Debbie, Jace and William was due – at least in part – to the fact that they were proud members of the Red Pheasant First Nation.”

Still thriving, just in a different way

The phone rang and the caller graciously agreed to call me back on my cellphone because my new hearing aids are useless on the landline, but amazing when connected to the cell. Then, in the politest way possible, she let me have it.

In the course of our conversation I told her if I had a dollar for every time Top of the Pile Columnist Brian Zinchuk has landed me in hot water over the years, I’d be a wealthy woman.

The subject of my caller’s dismay was Zinchuk’s submission to the Aug. 9 Regional Optimist (Vibrancy of lake communities in decline), the final few paragraphs of which referred to Cochin.

My caller pointed out the timing of that opinion was unfortunate in light of Cochin Days being hosted the weekend following its publication. Organizers of that event argue that Cochin is not in decline, but is a vibrant and happening place, not just during Cochin Days, but throughout the year.

I remember those days. I visited a friend’s cabin on Murray Lake when I was a teenager. I remember the bar, too, and the fights that were almost obligatory on any given Friday or Saturday night. How they hosed down the concrete slab floor before opening the next day.

It was exciting stuff for a teenager, but viewed from the wiser side of 50 plus, it probably wasn’t an attraction the community was especially proud of.

My caller points out, Cochin is now a different place, but not a lesser place, and she’s right.

The resort village’s website reports Cochin’s summer population surpasses 2,500.

The village has stores and service stations, a post office, a community hall, two churches, a fire hall, a library, playgrounds and a host of recreation opportunities.

Among the attractions is the famous lighthouse. This familiar landmark is billed as the only one of it’s kind in Saskatchewan. The light of its beacon can be seen for miles and visitors can be seen climbing the challenging

153-step staircase to view the 11.5 metre structure up close and enjoy the vast panoramic view of Jackfish and Murray Lakes and surrounding farmland.

A visit to the main beach or Hunt’s Cove on any given summer day will find both packed with beach bums of all ages, while Jackfish Lake will be festooned with pontoon boats, power boats, personal watercraft, sailboats and other means of enjoying the water.

Several businesses thrive in the community, which is also home to the Cochin Community Players. The theatre troupe’s productions are famous in the region and those wishing to take in the popular dinner theatre events need to be fast off the mark to obtain tickets.

But in fairness to Zinchuk, those who look back to the “good old days” will recall go-carts, trampolines, dance pavilions, boat rentals and other attractions at lake communities across the province. Those types of activities would have a difficult time surviving in a world where most lake goers have their own boats, wide screen TVs, trampolines and other diversions.

The RV crowd usually rolls into their lake destination with everything onboard, making them less likely to patronize local businesses. Cottage owners probably do the same, picking up groceries and other supplies in the city before heading to the lake.

Still businesses in Cochin garner enough support to keep alive and prosper and community members, through their local government, work hard to maintain services and amenities.

So, yes, most lake communities continue to thrive, just in a different way than in the “good old days.”

Dear Editor The article authored by Brian Zinchuk as published in your Aug. 9 issue of the Regional Optimist (Vibrancy of lake communities in decline) has people from the Battlefords and Cochin areas scratching their heads trying to figure out how Mr. Zinchuk could include Cochin in the broad brush “woe is me” condemnation of the state of “lake communities” considering that he has not been to Cochin for at least 18 years.

Mr. Zinchuk asserts, “I am willing to admit I could be totally wrong about this.” This acknowledgement shows his comments are total blather and nothing more than an excuse to meet his publishing commitments. No self-respecting journalist trashes a community and then says, “I could be totally wrong”.

Within 24 hours of the article coming to the attention of council of the Resort Village of Cochin, it extended an invitation to Mr. Zinchuk to come to Cochin over the weekend to witness the events of the 37th annual edition of Cochin Days and generally tour our village. He declined due to prior plans. A cynical person might think “cut and run.”

When determining whether these words (“vitality” the state of being strong and active and “decline” become smaller, fewer or less) reflect an accurate assessment of Cochin one must look at facts, not perceptions of 18-year-old recollections.

Another merger deal in the oilpatch I woke up this morning, and unlike Tony Soprano, I did not get myself a gun.

But I did get an email that indicated there was yet another merger in the works.

Merger, acquisition, buyout, hostile takeover – same difference. But there’s been a lot more of them in the oilpatch recently.

In this case, Ensign Energy Services Inc. was making an offer directly to the shareholders of Trinidad Drilling Ltd. These are two of the biggest players in the Canadian drilling industry, and they play on a global scale. Trinidad had, as of May, 68 rigs in Canada, 66 in the United States and overseas, and another five in a joint venture with Halliburton. They work in Mexico and the Middle

East.

But their share price, compared to its heyday, is peanuts. The offer from Ensign, a 20 per cent premium over the recent Trinidad price, is roughly one-seventh, per share, what Trinidad was trading for in early 2014, before the oil downturn hit.

I take particular interest in this deal because it involved some local content I’ve spent the last 10 years writing about. When I first came to Estevan, I spent a lot of time writing about Eagle Drilling, which was building new rigs as quick as they could. They built eight yellow rigs before they sold to CanElson Drilling, whose corporate colour is tan. At the same time, Totem Drilling sold its six orange rigs to CanElson. Then a few

The Bigway store is a mini supermarket with groceries, fuel, propane, hardware, liquor store, laundromat and bakery and is open all year round. The Dairy Shoppe continues to be a seasonal gathering place for ice cream and beach food sales and Jackfish Lake Store, a First Nation food and fuel outlet, offers service to all.

As noted, this past

weekend saw the 37th edition of Cochin Days.

The weekend included slo-pitch, volleyball and horseshoe tournaments, all of which were well subscribed. A movie in the park had about 350 attendees and the kids’ bike parade had more than 100 entrants. The day included the balloon man, Lakeshore Artists display and show, bouncy castle, an obstacle course enjoyed over and over by innumerable kids and a scavenger hunt. There was free-for-kids hotdogs in the park, children’s games and a sand sculpture competition. The spaghetti-eating contest was fully subscribed in all age categories from under two to adult with an audience which would have justified bleachers. The day included a boat parade, beer garden with band and

dancing and fireworks.

There was a children’s carnival, trade show, Saskatoon Shriners’ show and shine car show and a pancake breakfast attend by about 250 patrons, in spite of the ”iffy” weather.

Add to the above the dozens and dozens of volunteers and organizers and the observation that this is a celebration organized by the people of Cochin and not by the council. This hardly portrays a resort village whose vitality if on the decline. The only conclusion one may reach is that Mr. Zinchuk doesn’t now what he is talking about when he denigrates Cochin.

the employees would simply be a number. And that’s sad.

What’s also sad is that Trinidad’s board, for all intents and purposes, threw in the towel a few months ago by announcing one of those corporate strategic reviews, where it basically told the market, “we give up, come buy us.”

They got no takers, at least no takers that were worth announcing, from Trinidad’s board’s perspective. So they said they’d keep plugging along. Ensign then came in and made an offer, which Trinidad’s board didn’t seem too keen on, so Ensign put out its press release on Aug. 13 appealing directly to Trinidad’s shareholders. In other words, it became something of a hostile takeover of a company that had just recently said “come buy me.”

Ironically, if Ensign is successful, they will gain another 13 rigs based in southeast Saskatchewan.

A little over two years ago, the company cut up 13 of its own, admittedly older rigs in Oxbow and Carnduff. And for these new rigs, they will be paying an average price of $6.8 million per rig.

That price is across the entire Trinidad fleet,

which includes many much bigger, more advanced and more capable rigs, many of which are AC-powered. So maybe it’s not fair to say they would be paying $6.8 million each per telescopic double (teledouble) rig in Saskatchewan. Maybe they’re paying more like $11 million a crack elsewhere, and much less here.

The reason this is significant is that much of the southeast Saskatchewan teledouble drilling rig fleet has been gobbled up by Matrrix Energy in the past year. They’ve scooped up either the company or the assets of Vortex Drilling, Stampede Drilling, D2 Drilling and Red Dog Drilling, and the price per rig was only in the $1.4 million to $3 million range, for rigs that cost $8 million and up to build. Does the Ensign offer for Trinidad

improve the value of rigs in Saskatchewan today?

Maybe it does. Maybe it doesn’t. Time will tell.

These mergers are not a sign of health in the oilpatch, or of recovery.

They are a sign that many companies simply can’t hold on any longer. We are a long way from a healthy industry. Even US$65/bbl. oil has not been enough to revive them. A rising tide may float all boats, but either the tide has not risen enough yet, or the boats had too many holes in them.

Hopefully the companies that are doing the purchasing will be strong enough to grow, now, with these additional assets.

Otherwise, I can expect more early morning emails announcing mergers in the future.

Second-quarter statistics are in for the Battleford town detachment of the RCMP and they show decreases in the majority of crime categories in the community.

According to the numbers presented to town council Monday, for the first six months of 2018 overall calls for service in Battleford stand at 507, down from 522 the previous year.

From January to June, declines are being shown in the following categories: person offences are down from 58 to 41; business break and enters down from three to one; residential break and enters down from 15 to four; property offences down from 125 to 106; criminal code offences down from 47 to 37; liquor act offences down from nine to three; and municipal bylaw offences are down from five to three.

Increases are shown in drug offences, from five to eight and in provincial traffic offences from 54 to 57. Impaired operation of a motor vehicle offences are unchanged at 16.

As well, motor vehicle collisions are up from 12 to 19. There were 56 false alarms and 74 calls for assistance during that time as

As far as quarterly statistics go, the trend is not quite as rosy. April to June saw slight increases in the persons, criminal code, break and enter and drug categories.

Person offences are up from 19 to 21, business break and enters up from one to two, criminal code offences up from 23 to 25 and drug offences up from 4 to 5.

But residential break and enters are down for the quarter from seven to three, property offences down from 74 to 67, liquor act offences down from

four to one, provincial traffic offences down from 38 to 32 and impaired operation down from 12 to 11.

The second-quarter numbers were included in the presentation from S/ Sgt. Darcy Woolfitt of Battlefords RCMP Detachment on Monday.

Of the numbers for this quarter, Woolfitt noted many of the persons offences “revolve around addictions problems and social issues.” As for criminal code offences, while there was not much change this quarter compared to 2017, Woolfitt noted those were down significantly

In general, council members were happy with the overall numbers and downward crime trend in Battleford.

“I’m glad the numbers are down,” said Kevin Russell, deputy mayor for Monday’s meeting, to reporters.

“With the community that we live in, crime status has been at the forefront of all the citizens.”

Woolfitt said the force continues to be active with crime prevention efforts.

He said targeted crime suppression controls and other initiatives are continuing as part of their long-term strategy. This includes identifying prolific offenders.

“We’re finding by conducting these activities that it’s curbing a lot of the recidivism of some of these people, which is good and it’s having an overall impact on bringing the crime stats down,” said Woolfitt.

Woolfitt also noted the provincial Crime Reduction Team, announced earlier this year, will be setting up at the detachment in September. This team is made up of seven members and all the activities are being based on “intelligence analysis on crime,” he said.

Building permits are up significantly in the town of Battleford, both last month and for the year to date.

The July building permit numbers were presented to town council Monday and they show three permits issued for $1,500,000 for the month. One demolition permit was also issued.

That compared to the six permits issued for $972,200 for the same month last year. All three permits issued last month are in the “new residential” category.

So far through July 2018, there have been 23 permits issued for a total value of $6,234,400, up substantially from the 20 permits issued for $3,314,980 last year.

Of this year’s 23 permits, 17 have been residential permits for a total value of $4,329,600.

Unlucky in Landis Every Saskatchewan hotel built on the corner of “Railway and Main” has a story. The stories of the Landis Hotel, recorded in the town’s local history book, are truly compelling, and sad.

Noble and Gertrude Woodworth came to Landis in 1917 and decided to run the hotel. Built in 1909, the hotel had been in a slump since the start of Prohibition in 1915. To make matters worse, the Spanish Flu hit the village of Landis in the fall of 1918. An emergency influenza hospital was set up in the Landis Hotel.

The flu epidemic started in the trenches at the end of the First World War in May 1918. It spread across the Atlantic as troops returned to Canadian ports that summer and reached Saskatchewan on Oct. 1, 1918. Infected soldiers bound for home disembarked from troop trains in Regina and from there, the flu spread rapidly through-

So severe was the epidemic in Landis that literally every household in the village and district was stricken. The Landis Record reports that schools and businesses were closed, “and it was difficult to find enough able-bodied people to tend the sick.” Many people from Landis and area died, some as patients in the hotel.

In December of 1918, the Woodworths retreated to a quarter section of land on the outskirts of town.

Their two-room shack, with no conveniences and with straw and manure banked up around the foundation to keep the place warm, was likely a refuge from the sickness and sadness they had witnessed during their short tenure at the Landis Hotel.

In 1919, when Anna Haas was 19 years old and working as a seamstress for the GWG Garment Company in Winnipeg, her parents, Adam and Mariana Haas, moved to Landis. Perhaps they thought that running the village hotel would be a good opportunity for Anna, for she arrived shortly afterwards. Two years later, Anna gave up the hotel

Warrant issued after Wilkie area incident Staff Aggressive behaviour by a suspicious individual in a rural area near Highway 29 north of Wilkie has resulted in an arrest warrant being issued for Sean Reid Schille, 38.

Schille is wanted on several criminal code charges.

At approximately 4:45 p.m. Monday, Wilkie RCMP received a complaint of a suspicious vehicle on a rural property in that area. When officers responded, they ran the plates, which did not match the vehicle, a green Ford F350 truck. According to police, both were registered as stolen.

Police say when officers approached the vehicle and advised the man he was under arrest, he put the truck

into reverse and backed into some bushes after striking a play structure on the property. He then put the vehicle in drive and drove toward one of the officers on scene, according to RCMP. The officer was not injuried.

Police say the driver then took off through the bush and into a field. Officers were unable to follow due to the terrain, but continued to make patrols of the area.

Officers report they came to another rural property and saw a white Ford F350 being driven erratically heading north on a grid road. The green F350 from the previous incident was abandoned at this location.

Officers initiated a pursuit but ended it a short time later. The white F350

has since been recovered, but officers are still trying to locate the driver.

Schille has been charged with assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, mischief under $5,000, flight from police, motor vehicle theft, assault with a weapon, four counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, impaired operation of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and possession of marijuana.

Unity/Wilkie RCMP are asking anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Schille to contact their local RCMP detachment or police service, Unity/Wilkie RCMP at 306-228-6300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222TIPS (8477).

Cannabis sign bylaw passed

The Town of Battleford has continued to move forward with updating its zoning bylaws in advance of cannabis legalization.

The latest move was related to signs for cannabis grow operations and cannabis retail stores.

Second and third reading came up Monday on amending the zoning bylaw to include a subsection that reads as follows: “Signs for cannabis grow operations and cannabis retail stores must not contain any cannabis-related images ....”

First reading was passed at the July 16 council meeting and second and third reading carried unanimously Monday. A public hearing was held at the start of Monday’s meeting on the issue and no objections were presented.

The zoning bylaw amendment is the latest in a series of bylaw changes introduced and passed at Town Hall in anticipation of the coming legalization, now scheduled to happen Oct. 17. The changes include zoning bylaw amendments to set out where cannabis retail would be permitted in the

town limits, as well as smoking bylaw changes.

It’s now anticipated the next step at Town Hall will be considering the application for the location of the cannabis retail store. In June, Prairie Sky Cannabis was awarded the retail permit for Battleford through a lottery process set up by the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority.

However, there is no word yet on where the store will be located.

Councillor Kevin Russell confirmed to reporters following Monday’s meeting that no applications have come to council yet for the retail location.

Instead, two men, Wing Woo and Wah Woo, worked with Mr. Sing in the café. The Chinese Immigration Act was repealed in 1947, but it wasn’t until 1958 that Mr. Sing’s wife finally joined him in Landis. Mr. Sing died two years later. His wife continued to live in the Landis Hotel, with Wing Woo and Wah Woo looking after her until her death in 1968.

Those Were the Days dominated the Western Development Museum Saturday and Sunday. It was an active weekend at the location as those in attendance were taken back in time to life in the Roaring ‘20s in Saskatchewan. The Northwest Territorial Days Parade marched down 100th Street Tuesday, kicking off the annual exhibition. There was a wide array of floats and displays, including several vehicles to be used later on in the week at the annual demolition derby. Territorial Days runs until Friday evening at the Battlefords Agricultural Society exhibition grounds offering up a midway, heavy and light horse shows, entertainment and more. WDM’s 1953 Chev best vintage vehicle

The winners have been announced for the Battleford Parade, which took place in the streets of Battleford Friday evening.

In the auto-antique category the WDM was awarded first prize for its 1953 Chevrolet. The Battlefords Vintage Auto Club

took second and third with a 1955 Oldsmobile and a 1929 International truck.

First prize in the noncommercial category went to the float of Saskatchewan Hospital. Battle River Treaty 6 finished second and Wilkie Museum third.

In the youth category the 1st North Battleford Girl Guides took top spot,

Health care history topic of museum event

At the Borden Museum Aug. 11, Helen Gerster was the guest speaker and she related many stories of nursing in Borden, telling the history of the Cottage Hospital which operated from 1933 until 1946.

The Borden Municipal Hospital was established in 1946 with an extension added in 1954 and a solarium in 1959. The hospital became a union hospital in 1963 and it had patients from Maymont to Langham. A new 10-bed modern hospital was built in 1978, which is now the Borden Health Clinic.

Helen told of some of the doctors who had served over the many years. She started working in 1958, then married a local farmer, Gilmour Gerster, in 1960, but still worked part time for many years in the new Borden Union Hospital.

Radisson Fair Results The Radisson Fair, held Saturday and Sunday, started with ball games on Saturday morning followed by the parade at 11 a.m.

U19 Panthers win gold on home field

As the days are becoming noticeably shortened, and the drought-induced premature leaf falling on some of the trees in our neighbourhood, we are becoming aware the lazy, hazy days of summer are clipping along quicker than we hoped. However, instead of lamenting what’s gone, focus on the summer and warm weather there is yet to take advantage of.

Aug. 3 long weekend opened with a bang when Unity experienced a big summer storm that included high winds, minor hail, plenty of thunder and lightning along with rain ranging from six-tenths to nine-tenths. It was much needed moisture but will it sustain us as temperatures remained high with little or no rain on the horizon?

The ball season was a big one in Unity this year, hosting multiple events as well as many championships earned. Mosquito Cardinals won their provincial title. Senior Cardinals competed at their provincials this weekend in North Battleford. On the softball side, every single team in Unity Minor Ball earned medals at provincials, sending three of the four teams eligible to Western Canadian events.

The U16 girls are competing this weekend in Kelowna, B.C. The U19 Unity Panthers won the first ever Unity Minor Ball gold medal at Western Canadians August long weekend. Swinging through three opening wins, the team met some tough competition losing two straight. However,

knowing their last round robin game was crucial, they pulled out a big win against Manitoba sending them to playoffs.

They squared off against a tough Manitoba team, who had already defeated them in round robin and once again suffered a loss in the 1 vs. 2 game sending them to a mustwin series Sunday.

Playing off against a Team Saskatchewan they had beat in provincial championships, the intense matchup had the Panthers coming up with a 2-1 victory, sending them to the gold medal game where, once again, they would meet the Westman Magic Manitoba team.

It was clear the Unity Panthers were on a mission and when the last out was called, it was Unity that was on the winning side, earning them a well-deserved gold medal at home.

Numerous accolades have been received through social media and other manners regarding the ball diamonds venue, in addition to praise for the organizers and volunteers.

The grounds crew has been at the top of the “kudos” list for these events, especially during the Western Canadian championship when they were at it early Friday morning, Aug 3 to deal with the remnants of the previous night’s storm.

They also dealt with another storm and downpour during the last games Aug. 4. These weather systems

made Sunday even earlier for them as game times were moved up.

Get your registrations in for the first-ever ball hockey tournament taking place to raise funds for the new outdoor recreation complex. Registration forms can be picked up at Unity Credit Union. Aug. 24 is registration deadline for this Sept. 8 event.

It’s that time of year when the annual garden produce swap and shop is in full force. This timehonoured tradition in Saskatchewan, when those who have production exceed expectations are either swapping for other produce that they don’t have or sharing it with their neighbours or even bringing it to the weekly farmers market to get a small return on their labors. As well, the annual “who has the weirdest shaped vegetable” informal contest has begun.

A friend of mine had the most perfectly shaped potato in the form of a heart.

Coffee row folks are starting to regroup in their usual numbers as many are now done their summer vacations. Table talk revolves around the weather and the predictions, which also includes harvest talk.

Local sports and national sports are always part of the conversation, too. And, it never gets old to review all that has taken place in Unity this summer while anticipating yet again what events and activities are still to come. So you can see life is full of fun and activity in Unity with our friends at coffee row sharing this traditional part of our community culture.

Cabri takes provincial baseball title in NB

Three days of competitive Senior AA Tier 3 provincial baseball action ended Sunday with the Cabri River Rats taking

the provincial title.

The North Battleford Beavers, Unity Cardinals and Meadow Lake Sox represented the NSRBL, while the other teams were Cabri, the Rosetown Eagles and the Northeast Red Sox. Round-robin play saw Unity finish on top with a 3-0 record, followed by Cabri and North Battleford at 2-1 and Northeast at 1-2.

Not advancing to the playoff round were Meadow Lake at 1-2 and Rosetown at 0-3.

For North Battleford, it was a good showing, but in the end they simply could not find an answer in their games against the River Rats, the champions of the Sask-Alta league.

The Beavers beat Rosetown 8-7 in the opening game and the Northeast Red Sox 10-0 in the second game to secure their place in the medal round.

But they lost 7-4 to Cabri Saturday night, and then

In Estevan, the NSRBL champion Border City Blue Jays wrapped up the Tier 2 title, winning 14-4 over the Carlyle Cardinals.

Albers staying with Buffaloes in Japan

Pitcher Andrew Albers is enjoying pro baseball in Japan so much he has decided to stay for another season.

Albers announced on Twitter Friday that he will be going back for another season with the Orix Buffaloes of Nippon Professional Baseball, based in Osaka, Japan.

“Very happy to announce that I will return to Orix next season!

“I am truly grateful for the fans, the organization, and my teammates!

“Go Buffaloes!” Albers said on Twitter.

Albers signed with Orix this season after finishing up the previous years in the major leagues with the Seattle Mariners.

As of Friday, Albers had a record of 9-2 with Orix, with 78 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.90.

Weather cool at tee-off New Horizons played their weekly golf scramble, with only 14 attending, Monday morning, Aug.13.

The low turnout was a reflection of the cool, damp weather.

Leader ball dates back to 1918 Submitted

The Town of Leader will be inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame, Community Category Saturday, Aug. 18 in Battleford.

Senior baseball in Leader from 1918 to 1960 evolved through several name changes to become the Leader Barons.

The early years saw two teams from Leader, with one team made up of local businessmen. Some of the 1931 players continued into 1935.

In 1936, the local newspaper, The Happyland Spokesman, reported the Leader Huskies were defeated by Fox Valley in the final game at the Leader sports day. They had won their first game 5-4 over Burstall.

Records from then into the early 1950s are not too clear, but several players continued through to 1959.

Some of the early players stayed on as managers in later years.

Leader always had a good ball team, with a good pitcher imported each year to join the talented local baseball players.

They hosted an annual baseball tournament as well as travelling to many towns for tournaments and exhibition games including Sceptre, Kindersley, Cabri and Maple Creek.

On June 1, 1955, Leader won first prize of $200 at the Prelate Sports Day with wins over Fox Valley, Prelate and Richlea.

Throughout the years, Leader teams changed names and leagues several times.

The Leader Tigers of the early 1950s did not appear to play in a league but played in tournaments and at sports days in Eatonia, Kindersley, Eston, Mendham and many other towns in the area.

In 1955, the team

changed their name to the Leader Flyers and joined the Grain Belt Baseball League with Prelate, Mendham, Empress and Burstall, finishing with a 5 win, 6 loss record, then were defeated by Empress in the finals.

They remained in that league through 1956, 1957, 1958 and 1959, without winning a league championship.

In 1958, the Flyers helped initiate the new ball park at Cypress Hills, but lost 4-1 to the home team, Maple Creek.

In 1960, when the team was in need of equipment and uniforms, they found a sponsor in Bill Baron and changed the name of the team to the Leader Barons.

When Bill Baron moved, sponsorship of the team was taken over by Stephen and Ella Baron, thereby keeping the Leader Barons baseball team intact.

By Lynn Strendin Many Battlefords Art Club members took part in the Chapel Gallery adjudication and individual critique sessions with artist Ward Schell this week.

We would like to thank Leah Garven and her staff for making this valuable opportunity possible.

The art work is still up until Aug. 25 for those who haven’t seen it yet, or those who would like another look. There’s a wide variety of art to see, including paintings, quilting, fabric art, beautifully crafted knives, a sculpture and more.

Art club members were also busy at the Cochin art sale this past weekend.

August live model drawing sessions are underway for members and the public.

The last one for the summer will be held on Tuesday evening Aug. 21.

A Lloydminster woman has won a $89,012.32 jackpot at Gold Eagle Casino.

According to a GEC press release, Shelly Harrison won the Touchdown jackpot on the Rider Nation Progressive Aug. 9.

Harrison shared some of her winnings with her family, the press release states. She wants to save the rest for now to think about what to do with it.

“It’s a lot of money,” she said.

“We’re always excited to see one of our patrons walk away a big winner. On behalf of Gold Eagle Casino and SIGA, I wish to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Shelly,” says Kelly Atcheynum, general manager, GEC.

BATTLEFORDS ART CLUB

No injuries in house fire Staff No one was injured in a house fire at 2311 - Ross Cres. in the early hours of Saturday morning.

North Battleford Fire Department responded to a call at 4:58 a.m. and discovered smoke and flames emanating from the ground floor.

According to NBFD, the fire was quickly extinguished and the tenants evacuated.

Two pumpers, four utility vehicles and 18 firefighters responded.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Jackfish Lake was abuzz with activity from Aug. 10 to 12 during Cochin Days. The annual event saw a variety of recreational activities and displays throughout the resort community including volleyball, horseshoe tossing, sandcastle making, trade shows and a vintage auto show and shine by the Saskatoon Shrine Club. OBITUARIES Reine (Lavoie) Lessard June 14 1917- July 19 2018.

What can you say about a woman that has lived a full life and has done most everything she wanted to do? Reine was born to Joe Amede & Claire Lavoie on June 14th 1917 at Jackfish. She was the eldest of 4 children. Brothers Aimie, Peter, and Claude all predeceased her. She started school in Saskatoon when her Dad moved the family there as he found employment building the Bessborough Hotel and the Borden bridge. From there she moved with the family to Wilson Lake, then to Cavalier. In the fall of 1938 she headed to Vancouver to join up with a girl-friend there and was employed as a nanny for 1 year. It was when she came back to Saskatchewan that she met Lawrence in Meota at the New Years Dance. They were married July 15th 1940. They eloped to Lloydminster and found two girls playing softball. When asked if they would be witnesses they said sure. Mom kept in touch with the girls and had them come to Mom and Dad’s 50th Wedding anniversary. Mom was that kind of gal- she knew how to keep in touch. Mom & Dad have 6 children - 2 girls and 4 boys. Sharon was born Aug of 1941, Elaine March of 1943, Ken April of 1945, Ron Nov. of 1946, Cliff March of 1950 and Dean July of 1953.

Mom had lived in the Fitzgerald District, Prince, Battleford, North Battleford and Yuma. When living in Prince neighbours and friends from North Battleford formed a “Birthday Club” and they would meet at each others place taking turns. Most of them phoned Mom to find out dates of birthdays and anniversary’s.

She rarely forgot anyone’s birthday. When she moved to Ruth Whyte Manor she started bringing teddy bears to the hospital and senior homes- gave out thousands. She was not happy if she wasn’t busy. In her own words she said “ I can’t remember ever being bored. The year’s of volunteering at the Battleford’s Union Hospital were some of my most fulfilling years as I found volunteering a special gift. I got more from that then I ever gave.

I enjoyed blind bowling for 16 years with the help of the North Battleford Lions- thank you for the love, friendship and support.”

Mom and Dad both fought very hard to bring “Medicare” to the people of Saskatchewan and then Canada. Something we all can be thankful for. Hamburger Soup was a big part of lunch at her home, which the grandchildren and great grandchildren all love. Mom had a special place in her heart for Tim Pruden, Betty Hollingshead and Pat Folan. They loved to tease her and she them. She couldn’t say enough good for her care at Villa Pascal and bragged about the tasty food there. Thank you to the staff for your excellent care. Thank you Mom for all the care given to us and everyone else that felt her love. A poem she picked for us...

Sheila was 1 of 6 children born to Alexander and Isabella (Robertson) Bremner in Tillygreig, Scotland. She immigrated to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in 1964 and later moved to North Battleford, Saskatchewan in 2004 where she married Rolan Farrant. Sheila is survived by her step-children: Gwen Rhode (Dan); Sylvia Farrant-Duguid (Alan), Malcom Farrant (Ellen); Rolly Farrant (Susan); Nadine Finch (Ron); as well as her loving grand children; her sister-in law Elizabeth Bremner; her brother-in law Douglas Barclay; and her nieces and nephews in Scotland. A Graveside Service will be officiated by Joyce Sali on Saturday, August 25 at 1:00 p.m. from Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in the Veteran’s section. Following the graveside internment, a reception will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 70 in the Sloan auditorium. Elva June Rorke: It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of our mother, Elva June Rorke (nee Rasmussen) on July 30, 2018 in North Battleford, SK at the age of 99 years. She is lovingly remembered by her children: Son, Garry (Lucille) Rorke; and their children: Jennifer Rorke (Thomas Schweizer); Murray (Daina) Rorke; Dan (June) Rorke and their children, Jack and Luke. Daughter, Patricia (Steve) Wagenhoffer. Daughter, Donna (Jack) Spencer; and their children: Aaron Spencer (partner, Stephanie Kratchmer); Ray (Tara) Spencer and their children, Kate and Shae; Carl Spencer. Daughter, Fay Rorke (companion, Bruce Woloshyn) Elva was predeceaed by her loving husband, Ormond in 1986. She will be laid to rest with him at a later date.

She was also predeceased by her parents, Gilbert & Anna Rasmussen and her sisters, Pearl Walker and Goldie Steel; her brothers, Bert and Ghyll Rasmussen. Her lifetime on the prairies started with her birth on January 25, 1919 in Anneroid, SK at the height of the Spanish Influenza.

She was the second youngest of five children born to Gilbert and Anna Rasmussen. Their family later settled in the Battleford area, where she spent most of her life. She loved music and enjoyed playing both the piano and the violin. It was in the Rockhaven area playing at country dances that she met our dad. They were married September 24, 1941. She was passionate about her family of four. She was an exceptional mother and loving spouse. Family and friends were always welcome for a meal or game of cards. Her sewing machine never sat idle. It was in 1955 that Mom was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and she spent the remainder of her life being a faithful servant and sharing her beliefs with others. When asked about the milestones that she experienced in her nearly 100 years, she would share many stories about the excitement of attending the Chitaqua in Cutknife, experiencing the hardships of the Dirty Thirties and the tension of WWII, and the introduction of Medicare. She thought the very best improvement in her lifetime was access to running water in the house. She always looked forward to the future and encouraged her children to do the same. She said one of her greatest thrills was her iPad because she enjoyed very much receiving pictures of her family.

Her life was full. A come and go tea celebrating the life of Elva will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2018 between the hours of 2 - 4 p.m. at the Western Development Museum in North Battleford, SK. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to your favorite charity. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Trevor Watts of Eternal Memories Funeral Service & Crematorium. Information/registration night set for Sept. 6

The Wilkie in motion group is hosting an information/registration night Sept. 6 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Saskcan Community Centre Dance Hall.

The evening, which will include food and refreshments, is an opportu-

nity for everyone in Wilkie and area to find out what is offered for sports, service clubs, social groups, churches and many other

activities for all ages.

The community is not that large, but there is a wide variety of activities for people to enjoy. The various groups will be there to show what they have to offer with information about what they do in the community. There will also be registration for activities.

Earlier in the summer, information was delivered to approximately 45 groups and organizations. Deer and went to see the Columbia ice fields and the waterfalls along Banff Jasper highway. The highlight of the trip for the boys was the zip lining. They met people at the campsites who were not far from home.

Ruth Weinhandl was to her daughter’s 40th wedding anniversary at Okla near Yorkton. It was a happy enjoyable time meeting old neighbours and relatives who hadn’t seen one another for a number of years.

Some of the apartment people enjoyed the 50th wedding anniversary for Dave and Judy Bedwell held at the Seniors’ Drop In Centre on Saturday. It was an enjoyable afternoon and supper.

Jean Stewart had a niece, Ilene of Kitscoty, Alta., to see her Monday.

Two weekends ago Marlene Pike’s, son Rodger, his wife Linda and boys were camping at the museum campgrounds. They took

Marlene to camp where she enjoyed a campfire supper.

This weekend Barb and Jerry took Marlene to Lloydminster where they met Lorna, Barb and Brenda for coffee. On the way home they stopped in Lashburn and visited with Gloria Ford. It was an enjoyable weekend for Marlene.

Coleen Koski was to North Battleford for medical treatment.

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, I spent at Milleton Hall at a sewing retreat with the Maidstone Quilting Squares. We had a great time sewing, visiting and eating. It’s always a very enjoyable time.

Thanks to the people who bring us fresh garden vegetables and fruit. They really are appreciated.

Coffee at the suites was enjoyed wishing August birthday people happy birthday. They were Doreen Smart, Angie Ewanowich and myself. No ages were revealed.

There are a lot of golf carts being used for transportation throughout the village these days. It is good the village permits this practice and mostly the privilege is not being abused, however there is always someone who

wants to show off, going faster than they should, endangering their own life and that of others. One unit I watched had five youngsters riding, seeming to be under control, but you can’t help worrying about them.

One cart was seen driving after dark with no lights or reflectors, startling a motorist.

The new coat of paint on the Meota Hotel has brightened up that corner and makes it more appealing.

There are many patches of road repair north up to Turtleford on Highway 26.

When one lady was driving there, the flag girl was

hiding behind a couple big trucks and, when asked why she wasn’t out where people could see her, the reply was, “I can’t leave my post.” There is also construction north of North Battleford, so be prepared to spend some time waiting at these sites. Another car count last Sunday, from the city to the 13-mile corner where Highway 26 turns off, tallied 255 cars met in about 15 minutes.

Another of our pioneers has left us. Roseanne Corbeil lived in the Lady Minto Health Care Centre and passed Aug. 7 at the age of

83. Her service was held Aug. 11 from the Edam Community Complex. She is survived by her husband Maurille and all their children.

It was quite a sight to see the grounds at the Meota Community Complex covered with motor homes, fifth wheel trailers, vehicles of every kind as folks gathered for the wedding of a young couple on Aug. 11. United in marriage were Kayla Tait, daughter of Caroline and Terry Tait of Meota, and Brett Pylypow, son of Carolanne and Curt Pylypow of Glaslyn.

They will make their home at Glaslyn.

Descendants of Alfred Scorgie and his wives Jessie (Bourne) and Margaret (Siddell) gathered at the Meota Community Complex Aug. 4 to 6. Families got together to share sto-

ries, pictures, memories, meals and laughter during the three days of the Scorgie-Stewart reunion.

There were 69 folks who attended.

Alfred Scorgie homesteaded northwest of Meota on what is known as Scorgie Hill, overlooking Jackfish Lake, west of the highway a couple miles. Families wore a coloured shirts to identify their branch of the tree and five different colours were used. Pictures were taken at the gazebo in the village park. Each family took home a family tree dating back to 1755, starting out in Scotland, to treasure.

Guests were impressed with the Meota facilities and enjoyed all there was to do in the village. Plans are already being made for the next gathering.

Advising of some of the risks associated with compromised air in summer conditions, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention note recommendations for measures to be taken to best stay

safe. Most are as simple as checking a UV index and include checking air quality reports and visibility guides. Others include keeping the air indoors clean by preventing air from outdoors entering the home and limiting vacuuming as it kicks up dust particles in the home.

Better to be feared than to be loved?

I told Ed I was researching the relationship between fear and love. I have the challenge to teach about fearing and loving God. We used to say fear and love are meant to go together in our relationship with God. Today folks tend to fear many things and people, perhaps, but not God. Is the fear of God labeled a negative attitude, now?

Ed, my old friend, said it is better to be feared than to be loved.

He believes if you are feared people won’t take advantage of you, but they will if people love you.

The question for me is this: “Does fear cancel

out love, or love cancel out fear?”

It seems to me most of us have fears both slight and troubling in our minds. We may be reluctant to talk about them unless they seem to be normal among other people as well.

Ed offered that people are not quick to talk about what they fear. He contends that to admit to fear seems to make a person weak or cowardly.

He believes everyone agrees cancer is a threatening disease because of its power to kill, but we only really fear it if we are diagnosed with it. Once diagnosed, we may be reluctant to say it frightens us.

Fear is a distressing feeling that someone or something is dangerous, threatening or able to cause one harm or pain.

A good number of people have a fear of flying, public speaking, heights, the dark, spiders, dentists and so on. Fears challenge us to ignore them, nurse them or face

them and deal with them.

They may give us a healthy respect for what we need to deal with wisely.

Folks once understood that fear of God meant a sign of respect for the power and authority of God to both fully bless or harm us.

It is right to fear or

reverence God as the greatest of all and worthy of respect and honour, because all things, including our lives, are in his hands. It seems today it is hard for many to see God as a force to reckoned with.

Love in the Bible is centered in God who is love.

God’s love is more significant than our love as it is pure and sinless.

Fear of God is meant to lead us to God’s love, which is for those who see God as both all powerful and all loving.

God sent Jesus, his Son, into the world that we might have confidence that God loves us.

God’s perfect love for

sinners in Jesus Christ is meant to cast out fear of God in us. God does not want to punish us but perfect us in the love of Christ.

The Bible says it this way, “In this, the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him.

“In this is love, not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation (ransom/ satisfaction) for our sins.

If God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

“To fear and love God, we love one another.”
