eight people charged in Laverdiere’s death, was stabbed and seriously injured while on remand.

Two inmates accused of stabbing 18-year-old Checkosis appeared in court Tuesday on charges of aggravated assault and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Checkosis was stabbed with a homemade knife.

At the time of publication, the NewsOptimist wasn’t able to confirm why the stabbing occurred.

Checkosis, along with Jesse Sangster and Mavis Takakenew, are charged with accessory after the fact to murder in Laverdiere’s death.

Nikita Cook, Shayla Orthner, Danita Thomas, Soaring Eagle Whitstone and Nicole Cook are charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping.

Saskatoon Provincial Correctional Centre is in lockdown Wednesday after four inmates were injured in separate fights earlier this week. All four required treatment.

Battleford Legion hosts re-dedication ceremony Staff

In reverence.

The Legion and its colours were prominent in the community again, as the organization rededicated some important monuments in Battleford this past weekend.

According to Tim Popp of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 9, the Legion received a grant with which the cenotaph was refurbished. Additional memorial plaques were added to commemorate peacekeeping, the Persian Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Benches have also been added – one commemorating the First World War and another commemorating the Second World War – crafted of metal by Perry Gursky.

The re-dedication ceremony involved a recitation of remembrance, a blessing from Pastor Jan Cooke and God Save the Queen.

Attendees included MLA Herb Cox and Battleford Councillor Judy Pruden, along with army cadets and Legion members.

The cenotaph memo-

rial was unveiled on Nov. 11, 1923, dedicated to First World War soldiers from the Battlefords and district. Names of Second World War soldiers were later added and a dedication was done in 1996.

The site has a cairn commemorating soldiers of the Korean War, and also has a German artillery cannon captured from the First World War. A cairn is also dedicated to North West Mounted Police as a result of the North West Rebellion.

Child porn case returns to court Sept. 30 Staff The case against a man charged with accessing child pornography has been adjourned to September.

Cameron Froese of North Battleford will see his matters return to North Battleford Provincial Court Sept. 30 at 1:30 p.m.

Staff An individual charged with several weapons-related charges in North Battleford from Aug. 22 made his first court appearance Monday in North Battleford provincial court.

Jamie Musqua is charged with unlawful possession of methamphetamine, possession of a firearm when prohibited, possession of guns dangerous to public peace, possession of weapons (bear spray) dangerous to public peace, unlawful storage of a load-

ed rifle, possession of a restricted weapon without holding a licence, proceeds obtained by commission of an offence, two counts of possession of property obtained by commission of an offence, three failures to comply with undertakings, and earlier charges including assault and breach of recognizance.

The Crown has opposed Musqua’s release. Musqua appeared in court in the prisoner’s box and vocally expressed his displeasure to Judge Lorna Dyck.

“You guys are doing a really good job of destroying my life!” he said.

Musqua is remanded in custody. He was to appear again in North Battleford court for a possible bail hearing Wednesday, but at press time results were unknown.

Spike belt used to stop shooting suspect Staff RCMP say a complaint of shots fired at a house in Battleford overnight does not appear to be a random incident. A suspect has been apprehended, but no name has been released yet.

On Aug. 26 at 2:27 a.m., Battlefords RCMP received a call of shots fired at a residence in the 200 block of 15th Street in Battleford.

RCMP attended and located the residence. Several appeared to be from damage from a firearm discharge. There were no injuries to the residents reported to police.

Other RCMP members on patrol located a vehicle close to the scene of the shooting. Members attempted to stop the vehicle and the vehicle refused to stop.

After a short pursuit the vehicle was disabled with a spike belt and the driver was taken into custody.

Members located a firearm and numerous rounds of ammunition inside the vehicle. The investigation is continuing and charges are pending.

Further information will be released once charges have been laid.

MP Falk ‘waiting for the writ to drop’

Conservative MP Rosemarie Falk is waiting for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to call an election.

Visitors stopped by Falk’s North Battleford office at 1322-100th St. on Friday for a meet-and-greet with the Member of Parliament. Falk has been MP of the Battlefords-Lloydminster riding since winning the seat in a by-election in late 2017.

Falk’s upcoming plans include lots of door knocking. Many people are willing to volunteer, Falk said, “to make this prime minister a one-term prime minister.”

Commenting on recent months, Falk said “it’s clear that the prime minister is more concerned about himself and his friends and making sure that they’re above the law, which isn’t fair to everyday Canadians because we all have to abide by the law.”

Falk called former Minister of Justice Jody Wil-

son-Raybould “an amazing attorney general,” and said the Liberals expelling her from the party was “appalling.”

The upcoming federal election will be about affordability, Falk said, and the Conservative plan involves increasing affordability with less taxes.

Falk said a Conservative government would repeal the carbon tax. Some provincial governments including Saskatchewan’s have opposed the Liberal carbon tax plan, and Falk said the provinces want to “be good stewards of the environment without hindering the taxpayer.”

Falk criticized the Liberals’ handling of the situation with China, saying the conflict “shouldn’t have gotten to this point” and that it should have been resolved already.

In speaking with agricultural organizations, Falk said cattlemen “feel like they’re not being heard.”

As a social worker, Falk said her work has taught

her the skills of empathy “which is very much different that sympathy,” she said.

“Empathy is … having the ability to understand and walk with the patient or the client with what they’re going through, which I think is very important,” Falk said.

“Making advancements on issues isn’t just apologizing and saying sorry,” Falk said, “it’s actually making tangible change.”

Regarding immigration, the Conservative Party, Falk said she believes in “fair, legal immigration,” and said the economy needs immigration.

But “we can’t just open up the borders,” Falk said.

Conservative leader Andrew Scheer has also promised no cuts in health or social transfer payments, or education or health cuts from the federal government to the provinces, Falk said.

Centralization of power?

Commentators and academics have worried about the federal government’s

centralization of power in the prime minister’s office under Stephen Harper’s Conservative government and Trudeau’s Liberals, as well as their governments’ use of omnibus bills.

Omnibus bills are large proposals for legislation that can be on a wide variety of topics. During Harper’s years, the party proposed Bill C-38, which numbered over 400 pages.

According to Canadian Lawyer magazine, the big bills can be a problem because they cause MPs to vote with an all-or-nothing approach.

On the campaign trail four years ago, Trudeau said he’d govern differently. Some commentators and academics say centralization and omnibus bills have continued nonetheless.

A few years later, Trudeau’s Bill C-74 was over 550 pages.

When asked about omnibus bills, Falk responded, “I think in order for government to get anything done, I think [omnibus

bills are] something that’s always going to happen.”

“I think that’s just the way our process is,” Falk said.

She said she couldn’t speak more specifically due to not knowing who would be in prominent positions upon the formation of a Conservative government, and the possible ma-

jority/minority situation.

Canada last had a minority government in 2011.

Falk also said provincial jurisdiction “needs to be respected,” but federal intervention would be justified on matters relating to natural resource development deemed to be “in the country’s best interest.”

Consultants to develop joint recreation master plan

A contract has been formally awarded for a Joint Recreation Master Plan between the City of

North Battleford and Town of Battleford.

The winning proposal was RC Strategies + PERC (Professional Environmental Recreation Consultants), topping

eight other bidders in the process.

Both the City of North Battleford and Town of Battleford approved awarding the bid at their council meetings last

week. The proposal from RC Strategies + PERC was in the amount of $97,090.

An evaluation committee consisting Battleford’s leisure services director and town CAO, as

well as North Battleford’s city manager and Leisure Services director, met on Aug. 13 to choose the proposal.

According to North Battleford city manager

Randy Patrick it was a unanimous decision to award the bid to RC Strategies + PERC. It will be the Town of Battleford that will formally administer the contract.

Residential waste audit report deferred to later meeting

Discussion by North Battleford city council members of the recentlycompleted audit on waste and recycle streams in the

city has been deferred to September.

City council was scheduled to discuss the North Battleford Residential Waste Audit 2019 at their council meeting last Monday

night. The audit had taken place during the summer and the report itself had already been completed and submitted.

At the last minute, council agreed to take it off the council agenda for

that night.

It was noted by Mayor Ryan Bater that the agenda was already a full one, mainly because council was still on a summer schedule. It was also felt the waste audit topic

“warrants discussion on its own,” Bater said.

“The information in there may have an implication on city policy and I think it warrants a dedicated discussion on a night when we don’t have

a full agenda like we do,” said Bater.

The intention now is to bring the issue back to a meeting in September for a full discussion by council members and administration.

RFP awarded for storm sewer trunk main project

The city has selected a project manager for the $13.6 million primary sanitary sewer trunk main project.

The winning bid came from KGS Group, which beat out four other bids in a request-for-proposals process. Council voted to award the bid to KGS Group unanimously at Monday’s meeting.

The decision was made to go to a dedicated project manager, said Director of Operations Stewart Schafer, because of the magnitude of the project.

An RFP was opened up and five bids came back.

According to Schafer, three of the bids were

very close but KGS Group emerged the winner.

The five bidders were reviewed independently according to a points system that ranked the bids based on project understanding,

KGS Group came back with the top score of 71.67 out of 100.

Is the City of North Battleford towing the taxpayer into a lawsuit they can’t win?

Dear Editor This is the second time I have been compelled to write a letter to this newspaper, the first was prompted by the City of North Battleford entertaining the idea to buy the old CN Railway building for one dollar, that one dollar would have by their own calculations ended up costing the taxpayers more than one million dollars before they even made renovations to it.

Now I am reading about the city’s latest brain storm.

They think getting into the towing business would be a good idea and that the taxpayers of North Battleford should fund this new venture.

Most people know when government at any level involves itself in things best left to private enterprise it ends up costing the taxpayer more. Having said that, I believe that what they are trying to do is a travesty that reeks of interference in free enterprise.

From what I understand, the city wants the towing industry to pay them for the privilege of supplying a service that they (the towing companies) have already been supplying for years.

I can remember something like this happening when watching a movie a while ago, a mafia boss sent his men around to local businesses, his men informed the business owners that if they wanted to do business in his area of influence a percentage of their sales had to be paid to the mob boss. Those that didn’t comply where put out of business.

If the city is able to bribe its way into the towing business by offering one towing company exclusive rights to all the towing and impound fees (providing they, the city, get their kickback) what will stop them from targeting other businesses?

If I was a business owner in this city I would be very concerned with this proposal by the City of North Battleford.

I am also concerned for the legal ramifications that the city and the taxpayers would be facing should this scheme go forward.

I can’t believe the owners of the tow companies the city would be excluding from doing business will sit back and not engage legal counsel to sue the city.

Lastly, I have to ask those behind this outlandish scheme, by proposing such a scheme, what kind of a message are you sending potential companies or investors that may be thinking of setting up business in North Battleford? I for one would take one look at this and say no thanks.

Disappointed city wants to get into towing business

Dear Editor I am disappointed with the recent suggestion floated at City Hall re: the city getting into the towing and impound business – representing a philosophy that government should rule all rather than legislate and keep the playing field reasonable so the average citizen can rise to his or her fullest potential. The city should under no circumstances get involved in the towing and compound business because we have free enterprise doing the service efficiently.

Most taxpayers are aware that the city has spent into the forever future on things “nice to have.” There comes a time when the councillors have to not only live up to the fact but let the average people know, “We can’t afford it.”

Drilling rigs have worked most of the industry out of a job I have spent a lot of time looking at numbers over the years – numbers of active drilling rigs, oil production, investment in the patch, etc. A significant segment of my effort is sorting the wheat from the chaff, picking out the key figures of what matters.

One really good source is the North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources. Their director, Lynn Helms, has been director of the department quite literally for decades.

And as a “director,” he likes to make the allusion to Hollywood, so his regular report is known as the “Director’s Cut.” He’s actually a very affable guy who starts every speech with a pretty decent joke, so he’s entitled to call it whatever he wants. He’s overseen the growth of North Dakota from 120,000 barrels per day (bpd) in 2007 to 1,424,555 barrels per day today.

you exist and I not know it?) You can find it at https://dashboard.saskatchewan.ca/businesseconomy/business-industry-trade/oil-production Unfortunately it speaks in cubic metres, whereas the oil industry often uses barrels. The most recent data shows 2,396,696.8 cubic metres in the month of May. My math says that’s 486,282 barrels per day. If my calculations are correct, it corresponds very closely with the little infographic on the page that says, “In 2015, the province produced 486,000 barrels of oil per day and shipped about 65 per cent of that production to the United States.”

So, we have now finished five years of downturn, and four years ago we were producing pretty much precisely what we are now. All told, that’s not bad given the aforementioned natural declines.

But we’re also running a lot fewer rigs. I routinely use Rig Locator, a sister publication within our parent company, for

my rig analysis. It says on Aug. 23 we had 45 drilling rigs working. That’s about half of what we had prior to the downturn. Yet we’re still producing the same amount of oil.

One of the interviews I did this month pointed out a similar thing. Josh Biggs, owner of Top Torque Services Ltd., said, “You keep hearing all the buzz how the States is booming, but I disagree with that. I look at Baker’s rig count. We’re five years into this downturn. When the rig count drops off, it’s a great time to look. North Dakota, five years ago, 185 rigs. Now? 47. So they’re at 25 per cent of what they were at.”

Baker’s numbers differed from the Director’s Cut, which said 61 rigs, but close enough. Biggs’ point is there aren’t nearly as many drilling rigs out there.

Canada’s drilling rig fleet has shrunk from 800 five years ago to 549 today. And now the whole, much-reduced fleet, nation-wide, is currently running at only 29 per cent capacity.

So what does all this tell us? Not good news

if you’re in the drilling business. You, and your competitors, have largely worked not many, but most of your industry, out of a job.

That’s right. Most.

When just 29 per cent of a fleet that is already down by 31.4 per cent is working, most of the drilling industry is out of a job.

Rigs have simply become too efficient for their own good. The last time I spoke to Helms, a year ago at the Williston Basin Petroleum Conference, he noted that the rigs in their state have become 300 per cent more efficient. It used to take an average rig a month to drill a North Dakota Bakken well. That same rig is now drilling three wells in a month.

(I should add, a North Dakota Bakken well is not only twice as deep vertically, but twice as long horizontally, compared to a typical Saskatchewan Bakken well.)

I’ve been told that advances in bits, with polycrystalline diamond cutters, solids control, and much larger mud motors have all played a factor.

But the sorry conclu-

sion of all this is that the Canadian drilling rig fleet is still overbuilt by a very large measure. If we can keep producing the same amount of oil with so few rigs, eventually the conclusion will be that we don’t need that many rigs anymore.

I’ve heard tales of long ago of trees growing through rig substructures.

I’m pretty sure that’s happening today with the idle rigs, many of which haven’t spun a pulley in years.

A lot of that iron is going to be cut up. A lot of capital is going vanish in stranded assets.

I understand one rig recently sold at auction for the price of what just one key component cost. They essentially got the rig for free.

I don’t know when I will see a new drilling rig in Saskatchewan, but I expect it will be a long time from now, while the fleet continues its merciless cull.

Fin Island Run 2019 raises $800+ Staff

The Fin Island Run was underway again recently, this year taking place on Aug. 24.

Participants got some exercise and a feel-good uplift as the run raised more than $800 for the Canadian Mental Health Association - Battlefords Branch.

According to the Fin Island Run Facebook page, “[it’s] so great to be able to give back to our community that gives so much to us every year to keep our event going year after

year!”

In the 1K event, Graham Nagy of Vonda placed first, with a time of 2:16. Madison Harder of Denholm had a time of 3:41, and North Battleford’s top finisher in the category was Cohen Lafreniere, with a time of 3:50.

Gabrielle Ball, Battleford’s top finisher, had a time of 4:09.

Harvey Weber of Saskatoon had the top time in the 5K event, finishing at 26:13, Kaylee Kisser of Lloydminster finished with 27:37, T:4.85” and Battleford’s Tristan Ball finished with a

28:27 time. Other top finishers included Julia Egert of Cando and Clay Lazar of North Battleford.

Another Egert from Cando, Lisa, had a top finish in the 10K event with 44:44. Nicole Dubois and Ryan Wandler of Saskatoon and Ellyssa Neilsen of North Battleford each finished under 47 minutes. Battleford’s top finisher, among those in the results who recorded their hometowns at registration, was Chantel Lapointe.

In the long 18K event, Jacques Lacock of Bat-

tleford had a top time of 1:13:42, considerably in front of second place finisher Rhonda Serafini of

Baldwinton. Lacock ran 4:37 per kilometre.

The Pee Wee Beavers went into the final game having a perfect 3-0 record facing the White Butte Broncos team. When looking at the results, they were down to their chance come

Head Coach Mike Hummeny said he was pleased with the effort of his team over the entire weekend and will use it as a stepping stone going into the 2020 season of baseball.

Monday morning, Aug. 26, saw 27 New Horizons golfers brave the elements to play in their weekly scramble. It was cloudy, windy and cold, and the scores reflected it. Only

one team was able to crack the 40s and that was the team of Harry Zamonsky, Karl Palm, Ron Falcon and Nester Brunwald, coming in with a score of 37.

There were three teams with an identical score of 40, requiring a countback, with the foursome of John Chomyn, Sharon Boskill along with Denis and Connie Carignan, getting second place. Just out of

Don Murray was closest to the pin on number eight, with Denis Carignan winning the Co-op car wash for making the longest putt on number nine.

Unity minor hockey registration takes place Thursday, Sept. 5 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Unity Community Centre. As well, the annual NWT 3-on-3 hockey conditioning tournament takes place Sept. 30 to Oct. 12 and its open to novice, atom, pee wee and bantam players.

Firefighters receive $10,000 gift for SCBA equipment

Congratulations to Mackinley Gader from Borden who competed at the Western Canada Summer Games in Swift Current and in Special Olympics won gold in long jump, silver in 100m and 200m and bronze in shot put. Mackinley helped Saskatchewan place second in the standings with 213 medals overall.

The Borden Fire and Rescue cover RM of Great Bend, Village of Borden, Town of Radisson if needed, and the area along Highway 16 from the west side of the Borden Bridge to North Battleford, so have a lot of area to cover and often get called out at night to accidents or fires. The community appreciates all that these volunteer firefighters do

and many of them are first responders, also, so it is not always fires or accidents they have to deal with.

Summer is drawing to a close and the students will be back in school on Sept. 3 for a new term and we wish them all the best for the upcoming year. The Borden Friendship Club members have their August potluck supper and birthdays on Aug. 28, then they are invited to Radisson Senior’s for Sept. 5 supper and program.

Congratulations to Jordan and Jeanette Hauck of Borden on the birth of their son Finn on Aug. 16, a new brother for Ivy, and a new grandson for Earl and Laura Unruh of Borden.

Fire at Young’s Century-Old Hotel in 2011

In the early morning hours of Nov. 13, 2011, two sisters, ages 10 and 12, snuck out of their parents’ home and huddled in the front porch of the old, unoccupied hotel at Young. They lit some papers on fire to keep warm.

When they returned home, the girls left the fire unattended.

Sometime around 2:30 a.m., volunteer firefighters were called to a blaze at the 100-year-old Young Hotel. Within an hour of their arrival, flames had completely consumed the building. Young is located 100 km southeast of Saskatoon on Highway 2.

The older sister was charged with mischief and was dealt with through the Youth Alternative Measures Program, the RCMP told the Saskatoon StarPhoenix on Nov. 18. The 10-year-old was too young to be charged. Both girls apologized for their actions.

The Young Hotel, formerly called the Manitou Hotel, was built in 1910 by Thomas Murphy. In 1911, Robert Barry bought the hotel and made extensive alterations. The following year, Barry built the Barry Hotel on the corner of Avenue B and 20th Street in Saskatoon.

Katheryne passed away a few months later, on Nov. 22, 1918, during the Spanish Flu epidemic. Fred remarried a few years later.

After selling the hotel, the Harpolds moved to Melfort and then, in 1936, to Crooked River where they were again in the hotel business.

Mr. Feader owned the Manitou Hotel from 1923 to 1927. Under Feader’s management, according to the Young local history book Footsteps to Follow (1981), the hotel was recognized as one of the best hotels between Saskatoon and Melville. “It was quiet and a homelike place,” the history book states. “Large sample rooms in the annex of the hotel were at the disposal of travelers.”

From 1927 until 1946, the Manitou Hotel in Young was owned by Charles Jimsie and George Kaw. In 1935, a beer parlour opened in the hotel,

replacing the restaurant and ice cream parlour. In 1946, Otto Renner and his son bought the hotel and, in 1951, opened the New Manitou Café in a new addition to the hotel.

Joseph and Katherine Fornalik of Prince Albert bought out Renner in 1955.

Their daughter, Patricia Button (nee Fornalik) recalls in Footsteps to Follow: “When our family lived in the hotel, it had a verandah and a balcony on the second floor at the front, recalls Patricia (Fornalik) Button in Footsteps to Follow.

When mixed drinking was allowed in Saskatchewan in 1961, Earl Nicklas bought the Manitou Hotel, turning the beer parlour into a beverage room.

Joe and Doreen Freyling owned the Young Hotel for 27 years, from 1981 to 2008. “We enjoyed our time there,” Freyling told the StarPhoenix the day after the 2011 fire.

“It was a booming place when we bought it. It was a young crowd who’d come out and party at the bar and we’d get right in there too.” During the years the Freylings owned it, the hotel had a 100seat bar, a 27-seat dining room, a living quarters for the owner, and seven nonmodern guest rooms.

Giselle Begrand, who had owned the Young Hotel for three years up to the 2011 fire, was devastated by the loss. “My three kids and I put in our blood, sweat and tears for as long as we could manage here, so everything we owned and everything that we had was put into this,” Begrand told CBC News. The hotel had been closed in March and Begrand was just weeks away from selling the hotel when it burned down.

The people of Young were saddened by the loss of the hotel, which they had used as a meeting place.

New taxi bylaw coming, may accommodate Uber, Lyft

City council in North Battleford has gotten the ball rolling towards a new taxi bylaw for the city.

Administration introduced the issue to council Monday night at their meeting. Council voted in favour of directing administration to bring forward a draft vehicle-for-hire bylaw for approval.

Director of Planning

and Development Jennifer Niesink explained to council that the current bylaw is old and dated. In a memo to council she noted administration has fielded many questions and inquiries related to the taxi bylaw, as well as the potential for ride-sharing opportunities such as Uber or Lyft.

To address the concerns, administration has been looking at bylaws in cities across the country, and have been in contact

with the local taxi company, Crown Cab, and included their comments.

“There’s a lot of changes coming to the way people get around cities,” said Niesink. “We’re not at the Uber stage yet, but this would help us start to prepare to be there.“ According to the current bylaw, taxi licenses are restricted to 16 in the city – one per 1,000 population – and are given to one company. The current

bylaw doesn’t address ridesharing.

Administration suggested a number of procedures be put into the new bylaw.

According to administration’s memo to council on the issue, those include the following: 1. Only taxis can be hailed from the street.

2. Taxis, limousines and transportation network vehicles must be open to the public and report any refusals to the City.

3. Taxis and transportation network companies must be open to the public full time seven days a week and 24 hours per day.

4. Taxis and transportation network vehicles cannot be home-based businesses and must have a commercial office.

5 Limousines with two or more vehicles cannot be home-based businesses and must have a commercial location for the storage of vehicles.

6. Transportation network vehicles can only be ordered in advance.

7. Taxis must have a top light, a meter, and company information on vehicle.

8. Transportation network vehicles and limousines must have company markings on the vehicle, cannot have a meter or top light and cannot use the word taxi, cab or taxicab in advertising.

OBITUARIES SILZER-QUINN, Rose Rose Silzer-Quinn, of Saskatoon, SK passed away at her home surrounded by her family on August 14, 2019 at the age of 60 years. She was the beautiful, loving mother of Lesley Voellmecke of Ottawa, ON and Amanda Thiemann (Jason) of St. Gregor, SK. She will also be dearly missed by her “dollies” - her granddaughters Ava and Reece Thiemann, her father Ewald Silzer, her brothers and sisters, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her mother, Leona Silzer. Rose was born on January 12, 1959 in Humboldt and grew up on a farm near St. James. Rose’s career consisted of over 30 years in the Credit Union system, including as manager in Muenster, where she resided for many years and where her daughters grew up. Her strong leadership role extended beyond Muenster to reach throughout the Credit Union system in Saskatchewan. In addition to those contributions, Rose dedicated her time and energy to various causes close to her heart, including the Saskatchewan Regional Health Board, the United Way, and Ronald MacDonald House. Most recently she served as President of the Heritage Crescent Condo Board, and as a volunteer in an elementary school classroom. Rose was an incredibly generous and warm person who connected with everyone she met. Her home was often filled with friends, family and freshly baked cookies. Time spent with Rose always left you feeling nurtured and cared for. Her selfless and giving spirit continued to her last days in the ways in which she continued to care for all of those around her. Her light will continue to shine.

A celebration of Rose’s life was held on Sunday, August 18, 2019 at 7:00pm from Hillcrest Funeral Home (210 Wess Rd, Saskatoon). Charlie will be sorrowful missed by his dear sweet girlfriend of over 35 years Violet Vahsistiwan of Northbattleford. Eileen was born August 5th, 1919, the third of twelve children. She grew up in the Melfort area. She later married Everett Sharp and together they moved to the Paynton area where they farmed for nearly 40 years. When Everett retired from farming they moved to North Battleford. Eileen was a talented seamstress and worked at Craig’s clothing store and did other sewing on the side. She also quilted, crocheted and knit. Many family members are fortunate enough to have quilts, afghans and her other wonderful creations. Many of Eileen’s family were in attendance at her 100th birthday celebration less than 3 weeks ago. Despite her extraordinary age, Eileen was fortunate enough to live a remarkably independent life. Left to mourn are her children Wayne (Bea), Joan, Betty and Natalie (Brian), 13 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 13 great great grandchildren, her siblings & their families, daughters-in-law Deanna and Julie and her friends. Eileen is predeceased by her husband Everett, sons Vaughn and Neal, her parents, 6 siblings, two sons-in-law Marv and Ed, daughter-in-law Evelyn and one great grandson Landon. The family wish to thank the staff at Harwood Manor for Eileen’s care in the last few years, the staff at the University Hospital for their compassionate care in the last few days and family friend Shelby Greuter for being in attendance as Eileen made her last journey. Donna was born February 23, 1937 in Kinistino, SK, she was one of 6 girls and had 6 brothers. On November 18, 1955 she married Raymond Hickson and began their life in North Battleford.

Donna helped raise three children while also working part-time at Canada Post for 32 years to help support the family. She was a devoted wife, mother and friend to those who she crossed paths with. She is predeceased by her daughter Lana and leaves to mourn her loving husband Ray, daughter Sheryl (Brian Houk), son Rodney (Janice), numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one sister Darlene.

Lunch will follow the celebration of Donna’s life in the church.

Cabins going up at the lake

There’s been lots of action around the village, but I don’t have reports of the goings on. The concession is still open for meals and, of course, ice cream.

The cool weather last week brought one fellow out onto the golf course in his winter parka, one does have to be comfortable to play a good game. There appears to be lots of action out there still. It is so sad to see more of the big trees around the course dying every year. They were doing so well for so many years.

The STOP sign that has been missing for some time at the junction of the Metinota Road and the highway at Meota has been replaced.

A couple of lots have been cleared of their trees in Meota and in Lakeview for further development.

There are several cabins under construction in both places, and many for sale.

There are still a few showing up for morning coffee at the Do Drop In to catch up on the latest news and visit their neighbours.

The bridge players only got out twice this past week. In Meota Monday afternoon top score went to Vern Iverson and Joyce Antoine, then Margaret Dyck and Maureen

Campbell and thirdly Joyce Luckey and Linda Ard. They played in the Pioneer Hall in the city Thursday evening with top score by Margaret Dyck and Dave Creegan, then Vern Iverson and David Sharpe and third were Jean Lawes and Fraser Glen.

There were four tables of Canasta players at the Do Drop In Aug. 23. Top score went to Vern Iverson and Jack Stewart, second were Paulette Neale and Marion Ottas and third were Janice Morton and Arlene Walker. This is always a pleasant social time and some garden produce was brought and shared, much appreciated.

Summer isn’t quite over as campers are still coming in and going out.

They want nice, warm, dry weather, as do the farmers these days. The combines will be rolling before too many more hot days as they are already in southern areas of the prairies.

Visiting me from Wetaskiwin this week is my daughter Joyce Rowland. We’ve been working on our family trees and have to get together for finalizing data.

A tragedy in our family, in Uncle Jim and Aunt

Gladys Shepherd’s family, was the loss of their grandson John Schaffer in a boating accident off the coast of Florida. He went for a swim and was caught in the rip tide and carried away from the boat and didn’t respond to resuscitation when rescued by the Coast Guard. His mother was Margaret, the second daughter of Jim and Gladys, and he grew up in Africa and later in Oregon. His parents are both deceased. He leaves his adopted son, 29-yearold Cameron and 23-yearold triplets – Nicole, Paige and Brodey – and brothers Jim in Rhode Island and Mark in Washington and their families.

It is good to see the little house beside the Credit Union building has been sold and is being used by families. No doubt both house and yard needed some work but for the short summer holiday, folks can make do with what there is and make use of the yard and garage.

The Home Hardware Fall Scramble is on Sunday, Sept. 22 with an 11 a.m. shot gun start Sign up sheets will be up soon. Last year we originally had over 120 signed up but inclement weather put a damper on the weekend.

Make sure your child knows your cell phone number and place of work, as well as his or her home address. Kids should also have a backup phone number for another trusted adult, and know to call 911 in the event of an emergency.

Teach kids what traffic signals and signs mean, and communicate the importance of obeying them. Remind kids to carefully cross streets at crosswalks, looking both ways twice and never entering the street from between parked cars.

Go over school bus rules with kids, reminding them to stay seated throughout the ride. Teach kids to never approach or prepare to exit the bus until it comes to a complete stop, and to only cross at least 10 giant steps in front of the bus when exiting, so the driver can see them.

Make sure your child’s backpack weighs no more than10 percent of his or her body weight.

Select a pack with padded shoulder straps and a hip or chest belt, and make sure your child uses all straps to evenly distribute weight.

Teach kids to remain alert at all times when walking anywhere.

It is dangerous for kids to be distracted by headphones or smartphones while walking to school.

Kids riding bikes to school should always wear their helmets, riding single file on the right side of the road.

Make sure kids know the hand signals to use when turning, and to walk bikes across crosswalks.

Why do happy weddings turn into miserable marriages?

Ed, my old neighbour in Saskatchewan, wanted to hear about the wedding I officiated at yesterday.

He asked, “Did the bride or groom faint? Did the groom act like he was having second thoughts?”

I told Ed, “They were young and in love. Both were confident as their wedding vows were exchanged. It was a simple service in the backyard of the groom’s grandfather’s home. A small group of relatives and friends were there to witness their marriage ceremony. It was very close to a perfect wedding, I thought, except their kiss was a little too long and passionate, but they sure enjoyed it.”

I think marriage is God’s answer to our need for loving companionship.

they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one, will lift, up, his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him - a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”

I was reading of Linda Wolfe of Anderson, Indiana USA who at age 68 is recognized as the world’s most married woman. She has been married 23 times so far. She is open to marrying again because she

says life gets lonely.

I believe that the loving companionship God wants a couple to build in their marriage reflects His nature and will. God’s love for us never ends, and He would have us endure and bear in continual love for each other in marriage. We are to be patient and kind to each other. As spouses, we do not envy or boast; we are not arrogant or rude; we do not insist on our own way, become irritable or resentful of each other. We take no pleasure in wrongdoing but rejoice in the truth. If you want to love your mate this way, God will help you.
