19-year-old facing multiple charges Staff

Johnathan Ryann Gunville, 19, of North Battleford is facing abduction, unlawful confinement and a long list of other charges as a result a Sept. 17 Amber Alert.

According to RCMP hundreds of hours of surveillance footage from more than 200 businesses were viewed as part of the investigation, establishing the movements of a vehicle stolen from a strip mall with a six-year-old child inside that evening.

The vehicle with the child still inside was located by searchers the next morning. The child was safe but was taken to Battlefords Union Hospital where she was reunited with her family.

The charges against Gunville include: abduc-

tion of a person under 14; unlawful confinement; abandoning a child; dangerous operation of a motor vehicle; theft of a motor vehicle; possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000; driving while disqualified; and failure to comply with a probation order. All are criminal code offences. Gunville made his first appearance in North Battleford Provincial Court Monday.

Considerable resources were deployed in locating the lost child and investigating this incident including Battlefords RCMP, Battlefords Provincial General Investigative Section, Battlefords Municipal GIS and Saskatoon Provincial GIS. The Amber Alert also resulted in a widespread response from members of the public, who helped to search for the missing girl.

Les Guthrie: Good delivery in bad weather

Everybody has a STORY

(With files from Les Guthrie) Les Guthrie, who currently resides in Harwood Manor in North Battleford, wrote a short book of stories detailing some experiences he had after the Second World War. Guthrie, who will turn 100 in October, began working as a circulation representative for the Saskatoon StarPhoenix and stayed with the newspaper from 1946 to 1982.

Guthrie was born to Samuel and Maimie Guthrie in 1918 on the family homestead northwest of Swift Current.

The family moved to Eston in 1919 and Saskatoon in 1925.

Quotes are from Guthrie’s book: “While in Grade 12, I got a part-time job with the Saskatoon StarPhoenix sports department. Upon graduation I continued with this part-time job until I got a full-time job in a furniture store as an apprentice upholsterer, which

also meant selling when the store was busy. I eventually decided that to make more money I would have to get a better paying job.

“I got a job in a grocery store, a grocery warehouse and the Canadian National Railway.

“I served in the army during the war. Some years later, after receiving my commission from the navy, I served several years as a Sea Cadet Officer. In 1946, I got a job with the StarPhoenix as circulation representative for North Battleford and the towns in between, which meant a move to North Battleford.

Part of this job required me to transport the afternoon edition of the paper to North Battleford, which meant having to buy a vehicle.

“There was a shortage of cars in 1946, as they were not produced during the war. I bought a 1936 International half-ton panel truck and started on my 36-year newspaper journey. The driver’s seat was

Les Guthrie, former Saskatoon StarPhoenix circulation representative for the North Battleford region, invited the News-Optimist to publish some of his life stories. Guthrie wrote some of his stories down in a small book and is sharing them with readers. Guthrie spent 36 years with the StarPhoenix and many years in North Battleford. Many of his stories detail life in and around North Battleford during a time many, now, are unaware of. Guthrie keeps a small statuette he earned after working for the StarPhoenix. I didn’t have a spare tire. When I had a flat tire I would take it off and bum a ride into town, get it repaired and then bum a ride back

to my truck. The truck did not have a metal roof, but a treated canvas one. When it rained it leaked.

“One time my agent at Maymont needed a ride to Saskatoon. Shortly after we left it started to rain.

do his job. Highways at the time weren’t like they are now, as, Guthrie wrote, they were often two lanes of gravel without shoulders.

Some stories detail roundabout ways Guthrie delivered newspapers after his vehicle would malfunction or get stuck, or how he would help people out of those same situations.

In the spring, parts of the highway could become, as Guthrie puts it, “big mud holes.” Sometimes Guthrie delivered newspapers with the help of the train.

“My agent in Ruddell owned the hotel. He was a real character. He would stand on the corner with a big gold watch in his hand and inform me if I was late or early. One day

he showed me through the hotel. I was amazed at the size of the kitchen, which contained a huge stove.

We went into the room that had been the bar. It looked just like the bars in the old Western movies. There was a big mirror behind the bar and a brass foot rail. As I had been told that Charlie could fix anything, I took notice that the bar was covered with all kinds of things waiting to be fixed.

“One night I was driving into Saskatoon when the car broke down about a mile from Ruddell. I walked into Ruddell to see if Charlie could be of any help. He said that we might as well wait until morning, so off to one of the hotel bedrooms I went.

Move SLGA liquor store out of downtown?

The Battlefords Chamber of Commerce is looking at having the liquor store moved out of downtown.

At their board meeting Tuesday, directors voted in favour of surveying their members on the whole issue of the downtown Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority store location.

That survey should go out soon to businesses, and would include questions on whether they were in favour of SLGA relocating outside of downtown, what areas of the city they would like to see it relocated to and whether they were interested in writing to the SLGA or government officials.

The overriding sentiment at the meeting was that the downtown SLGA location, at the corner of 11th Avenue and Railway Avenue, was causing more problems than it was worth.

Concern was expressed about the ongoing addictions and alcohol issues seen in the downtown core. The liquor store was singled out for its share of blame for the situation.

“We’d like to see it moved,” said Chamber chair Terry Caldwell of the downtown location.

“There’s no constructive reason for it being there.”

Caldwell cited the general attitude to downtown “has not been favourable” due to the issues there. As well, Caldwell acknowledged the opposition expressed to murals on the side of the liquor store building depicting First Nation images.

That mural has been subject to criticism by Indigenous leaders who see it as promoting stereotypes linking First Nation people with alcohol.

Also cited by Caldwell was the access and amount of alcohol available at that location, and especially access to cheap alcohol, a sentiment shared by other directors at the meeting.

“SLGA is the number one culprit for that,” said Caldwell.

Caldwell noted the grief caused for other businesses downtown, and added while SLGA is not the only issue there, “at least without them there we can identify where the rest of the problems are.”

The experience of other cities had been looked at, and it was noted those

communities experienced significant upsides by moving their downtown liquor store locations.

Caldwell noted the closing of a downtown SLGA store on 20th Street in Saskatoon resulted in the “doubling the values of businesses there in months.”

Another example cited later at the meeting was the liquor store that was formerly located at the Sturdy Stone building in downtown Saskatoon. It was noted a lot of issues there were resolved after the liquor store moved out.

On the flip side, Caldwell noted other cities had liquor stores in their commercial and industrial areas that have been successful, without the issues associated with loitering or access to alcohol.

It was acknowledged a downtown location for a liquor store made sense at one time. Chamber director Warren Berg noted it was previously common to have the liquor store, the bank and other vendors in proximity as part of the “footprint of the community.”

changed now, with offsale.

“The needs of the liquor store have changed, the needs of the society have changed,” said Berg.

It was a frank discussion. Among the directors speaking was Tom Hawboldt of Light of Christ Schools, who wrote a letter to the editor published in the NewsOptimist calling for the SLGA store to be moved out of downtown.

While reiterating support for a move, Hawboldt also cited the need to keep the existing liquor store building occupied. It is considered one of downtown’s anchor buildings and the need to line up a new occupant that could take it over right away was seen as paramount, to pre-

Winter Games surplus could go to new arena, endowment fund

The 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games were a big financial winner for the Battlefords, and now decisions must be made on how to divide up the surplus.

It was confirmed by Councillor Kelli Hawtin at a Sept. 17 planning committee that Rob Rongve and David Schell, Games host committee co-chairs, would share financials and present a proposal to coun-

cil at their meeting this Monday.

On Sept. 6 at Blend restaurant, the Games board held their unofficial windup meeting, with the surplus being a prime topic.

It was reported there was approximately $250,000 in funds available.

In a report provided to council about that meeting, it was noted the majority in attendance believed the funds should be split between the new arena to replace the Civic Centre and

an endowment fund that could be applied for annually by sports teams and groups in the Battlefords.

However, there was also concern expressed that the arena might be years away, and that the memory of the games could be lost in the meantime.

Acting Director of Finance Margarita Pena said she had discussions with RBC on the possibility the City could open a separate investment account for the legacy funds. That way, the

money could be invested over the 10 years and generate returns.

“That addresses the concern in this report that the funds could get lost in City coffers,” said Mayor Ryan Bater, who liked the idea of a dedicated fund being set up.

There were also concerns expressed that moving the liquor store out of downtown might just shift the problems to other areas of the city.

It was also emphasized by directors that they did not want SLGA out of the community, instead, they wanted to be helpful in suggesting alternatives.

Five facing weapons charges back in court

The five suspects facing weapons charges dating to Sept. 4 in North Battleford were back in provincial court Thursday morning.

All matters for Kelly Muskwa, Dimitry Gopher, Justice Katcheech and Madison Dorion have been adjourned to Oct. 10.

The exception is for Riley Gopher, who is remanded to his next appearance Monday, when the court will consider granting his release on electronic

monitoring.

A bail verification report has been completed for Gopher. The indication from his lawyer was they still need time to confirm to officials that a landline has been installed as a requirement of the electronic monitoring system.

A bail verification report was also done for Kelly Muskwa, however, counsel indicated that report was not favourable and Muskwa has been remanded by consent to Oct. 10.

The other three coaccused are out on condi-

tions, and will appear on that date as well.

The five face charges of occupying a motor vehicle knowing there was a prohibited weapon, possession of a prohibited weapon with readily accessible ammunition and possession of a stolen firearm.

Muskwa also faces an additional charge of possession of a firearm while prohibited, while Riley Gopher also faces charges of assaulting a constable, failing to stop for police, dangerous driving and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

Byelections suggest Saskatchewan Party still solid The Saskatchewan Party’s Sept. 12 byelection loss in Regina Northeast doesn’t much affect the short-term or even long-term future of this government.

After all, the Sask. Party still holds 48 of Saskatchewan Legislature’s 61 seats, so New Democrat Yens Pedersen’s win changes little.

The truth be told, this city seat was a way bigger deal for the 13-member NDP Opposition than it was for the Sask. Party.

Because funding at the Saskatchewan Legislature is directly tied to the number of MLAs a party has, another member means more in Opposition because it means money to hire staff researchers and communicators.

Moreover, losing a city seat would not have looked good for the NDP. But a loss in a city seat — even one it held — isn’t much of threat to the Sask. Party’s long-term viability, either. Here’s why.

Pedersen’s approximate 730-vote win (the official Election Saskatchewan tally is yet to come) is a healthy enough win.

Time to reform rural government Dear Editor Murray Mandryk’s well written piece on “Something needs to change at the RM level” (News-Optimist Sept.

4) served well to set the table regarding challenges being faced at the RM level. However, I was disappointed he didn’t take it a step further and recommend solutions that are long overdue.

Let’s take a step back and look at the period RMs were formed. Roughly between 1880 and 1915 (In 1898 my granddad arrived in Canada and took a homestead in Rossburn, Man.). Plots of land of 160 acres were measured out, surveyors used horses, canoes and walked as forms of transportation. My father applied for and was granted a homestead of 160 acres in 1927 in Grandview, Man. There was no road, no telephone, no electricity, no natural gas and none of the potpourri of conveniences of communication we have today.

Of course we needed a reeve and councillors back then, but this is 2018. Why have we not changed? We have not changed because the human species, generally speaking, does not like change. Therefore for a period of time it would not be a popular move and the politicians want only to do what is popular not necessarily what is right.

So the politicians of all stripes sit on their hands instead of changing to a county system or giving the elected councillors in the county system training and guidance that Mandryk alludes to.

Governance at the local level will continue to get more complex beyond what for many RMs is still grading and gravelling. Time and education will become more paramount.

Where there is a will there is a way. County systems need not be more expensive. However, that hallowed argument will be used by those who wish to preserve the status quo.

We have made larger units of governance in the health and education fields, so why not municipal?

mandryk@postmedia.com And for the NDP, it does mark a significant turnaround from the former Sask. Party finance minister Kevin Doherty’s 2011 and 2016 wins that were by even wider margins.

This win now followed two other city NDP byelection wins in Saskatoon Meewasin (Ryan Meili) and Saskatoon Fairview (Vicki Mowat) since the 2016 election.

This has added significance because the federal election scheduled for 2019 will see two sitting MLAs — Corey Tochor in Saskatoon and Warren Steinley in Regina — contest seats for the federal Conservatives.

That means their current respective seats of Saskatoon Eastview and Regina Northwest will face byelections because the next provincial general election won’t be until 2020. Law states no legislative seat can be vacant for more than six months.

Two more city seat byelection losses for the Sask.

Party is a distinct possibility. Given the trend we witnessed in Regina Northeast, one might think a couple more byelection wins would give the NDP plenty of momentum going into that 2020 general election.

But we need to remember just how solid the Sask.

Party is in rural Saskatchewan.

Between the NDP wins in the two Saskatoon byelections and its win earlier this month in Regina Northeast, the Sask. Party won three rural elections in Kindersley (won by Ken Francis to replace Bill Boyd), Swift Current (won by Everett Hindley to replace Brad Wall) and Melfort (won by Todd Goudy to replace the late Kevin Phillips).

Kindersley is solid conservative country. You’d have to go back to the Tommy Douglas era to find a time when the CCF/NDP last had a legitimate shot of winning. Both Swift Current and Melfort did flirt with NDP representation after the demise of the Grant Devine Progressive Conservative government.

However, it’s been 27 years since Devine was in power and everywhere in rural Saskatchewan has become rock solid for the Sask. Party. Or at least, that’s what the recent byelections suggest.

The margins of victory for the Sask. Party candidates in the three rural byelections was between 75 per cent and 85 per cent of the popular vote. By comparison, the margins of victory by NDP candidates in the three city byelections was between 50 and 60 per cent.

Pedersen’s win in Regina Northeast was solid enough, but this part of the city voted NDP for 40 years prior to Doherty.

There are more than a dozen urban seats in Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw and Prince Albert, all of which, the Sask. Party now hold, that will be tougher for the NDP to win.

And besides having to win all of these city seats, the NDP byelections would still have to make a breakthrough somewhere in the Sask. Party’s rural fortress.

Recent byelections suggest there is no chance of that.

Les Guthrie: Good delivery in bad weather Continued from Page 2 “When we got to discussing my problem he said, ‘You’re driving a Dodge!’ I said, ‘Yes, a 1940 model.’ He said the carburetor in that model had a hole in the bottom containing a screw. He asked me if I chewed gum and I said ‘Yes.’ ‘Well,’ he said, ‘the screw probably fell out, so you chew some gum and then put the gum in that small hole.’”

“I kind of wondered about this. However I did as I was told, started the car up and away I went.”

Blizzards were also an occupational hazard.

“There were quite a few blizzards and blocked roads. In one of the worst storms I got stuck six miles west of Radisson. I walked to a farmhouse and asked the farmer if he could pull me out. He said anyone who would be out in the blizzard

deserved to be stuck. I said I was the StarPheonix man and had to be out. He said that was different, hitched up a team of horses and pulled me out. I eventually got back to Radisson after a lot of snow.”

Of the years he spent on the road, Guthrie said the winter of 1947-48 was the worst, as “there were snowdrifts up to the top of the telephone poles and snow tunnels on the highway.”

“There were many times that the highway would get plugged and I would get snow-bound some place.

One of these places was Langham. The storm was starting when I left the StarPhoenix. When I got just outside Saskatoon they were stopping the traffic.

I stopped and when they looked at me, they said “Oh, it’s you. Good luck.’

“And away I went.

“The storm kept getting

worse and by the time I got to Langham the visibility was so bad that I decided to stop. I took my papers to the railroad station and made arrangements for them to be put on the train for North Battleford. When I went to check into the hotel I could hardly see the lampposts across the street.

“There was a girl sitting with us in the lobby and she asked how the bedrooms were heated. One of the men asked if she had seen the metal grate in the floor in the middle of the hall. She said she had.

He explained to her that was where the heat came from. She then wanted to know how the bedrooms were heated. He explained that you keep your door open. She replied that she couldn’t do that.

“It was later found out that her door was half open the same as the rest.

“Later that evening as we were sitting in the lobby, two men came in and said that they had to have a meeting and they needed [the hotel manager] to form a quorum. He said that he couldn’t go. They came a second time and got the same answer. Getting the same answer on the third visit they asked him why.

He replied that he had to open the beer parlour or he would lose his licence, and the hired man couldn’t get into town because of the storm.

“I said if [he wanted] to go, I would look after the beer parlour. He asked if I could draw beer. I said no but I could sure take the cap off a bottle. In we went.

He got the stove going and gave me some magazines and said, ‘there’s the beer and there’s the money’ and away he went.”

Guthrie married

Marjorie Clark in 1949 and together they had three sons.

Guthrie was also involved in the Kinsmen Club, K-40, Associated Canadian Travellers, Band Parents Association and the Navy League of Canada. Provincially, he was on the executive of the Navy League of Canada and the swimming association.

Guthrie worked in two North Battleford elections, one he covered for the Canadian Press and the other as an assistant to the returning officer for the advance poll. He ran for the public school board, but wasn’t elected. He was also master of the Ionic Lodge Masons and president of the Battlefords Shrine Club.

Coaching was also part of Guthrie’s life as he coached hockey for seven years, was assistant coach and manager of the swim-

ming club for seven years, coached and managed the speed skating club for five years and was chairman of speed skating for the 1977 Saskatchewan Winter Games. Guthrie was also a member of the Legion and served on the United Church board of stewards.

Guthrie also took photographs, and some can be found on his walls at Harwood Manor, along with other activities.

“After the floods were over in the spring I would take my dog and pick up driftwood to take home to polish up. I also refinished a wooden chair that had been in the Clark family for years.”

Guthrie keeps his stories in a brown envelope that features the names of the people who read them.

His 100th birthday celebration will take place Oct. 6 at Harwood Manor.

PR firm hired to repair Battlefords’ reputation

The Battlefords Chamber of Commerce is hiring a public relations and marketing firm in connection to Action Battlefords.

Action Battlefords is the Chamber’s initiative to turn around the reputation of the community.

Last Tuesday, it was confirmed the Chamber had a meeting earlier in the day to approve a contract with Martin Charlton Communications out of Saskatoon for that work.

The firm was chosen, according to the Chamber’s Linda Machniak, because of their provincial and national reach. One of the principals is Paul Martin, a well-known Saskatchewan business commentator

who has done considerable work with the Chamber in the past.

“He is a Chamber guy from way back,” said Machniak. “He certainly understands the Chamber world, and his people are familiar with community reputation and reputationrepair.”

The contract is initially for six months. A flat fee covers the initial contract to develop a media strategy.

After that, it would be followed by a fee-per-month arrangement.

Machniak indicated enough money was available or had been raised already to cover the costs.

Up to now, Action Battlefords had concentrated on two main initiatives — programming aimed at teen youth and support for

Citizens on Patrol. The PR effort was to be the third, with Action Battlefords initially planning to launch it after the other two were underway.

Now, the communityreputation PR push is being moved up. One reason is because the Chamber was not yet ready to move ahead on the youth programming component.

But a second reason for the urgency was word that CTV’s W5 newsmagazine show was in the Battlefords in the spring, preparing a story. That finished piece is expected to air nationally in October.

The thinking, according to Machniak, is that now was the time to “start to move on the great news stories in the Battlefords.”

One example she point-

ed to was the business community’s potential involvement in the “Class of 2030” initiative, a longterm initiative launched last October to address high school graduation rates in the division.

earlier in the evening, seeking to increase business participation in the program. They pitched the idea of businesses or other groups getting on board to “adopt” all the classes in the community, and provide supports needed for students to stay in school and graduate.

Machniak pointed to that initiative as a potential story idea that media outlets would be interested in covering. “There’s some positive news out there about this community, not only the negative stuff that we all hear so much about,” said Machniak.

A birthday potluck lunch was hosted by North Battleford Seniors’ Action Now Aug. 8. Members celebrating July birthdays were Dave Manegre, Jean Smith, Mildred Heidel, Rita Peterson, Mary Nykiforuk, Simone Michaud, Yvonne Arsenault and Jeannine Beloin. August celebrants were Margaret Kemp and Ruth Bilanski.

At the same time, Fay Taylor presented Rita Peterson, Margaret Kemp and Mary Nykiforuk, all 85, with lifetime membership certificates.

After grace, members sang Happy Birthday before sitting down to lunch.

Members then enjoyed an afternoon of fun and Kaiser.

A meeting was held at 1 p.m. Sept. 17, with 13 members attending. Two minutes of silence was observed in memory of Stella Perkins and Renie Lassard.

They were remembered in conversations about water tower lights and teddy bears.

Funds were received from Sask. Lotteries and a donation was made to the Saskatchewan Abilities Council in August.

The centre’s next birthday lunch will be Oct. 10.

A proof of continuing education and marks were received from scholarship recipient Sofie Bonefacio.

North Battleford Comprehensive High School student Emma Schaefer has applied for this year’s scholarship. Members discussed both.

located at 1501 - 101 St. in North Battleford. The centre is open four days a week. Monday and Thursday canasta is played at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday the game is Kaiser cash back at 1:30 p.m. Friday cribbage cash back is hosted at 1:30 p.m.

On the first and third Friday of every month there is a Kaiser tournament at 7:30 p.m. and everyone is welcome. If you don’t have transportation, the handi bus is available for a small fee. Anyone 50 years and over is invited to join the club.

OBITUARIES STEPKO: Our family is saddened to announce the peaceful passing of Merven William Stepko on September 5, 2018 at Battlefords Union Hospital. Merv was born on the family farm on March 20, 1935 to Steve and Anna (Smal) Stepkow. He grew up in the Cando District, where he completed grade eight at Beswick School. Merv moved to Saskatoon to continue his education in 1949, but due to his father’s failing health, soon needed to leave high school and return to the farm. When Merv married Janis Dahl in 1975, a new home was built for their family, where they lived for 25 years. They welcomed a daughter, Karen, in 1978 and a son, Steven, in 1980. When they sold the farm in 2000, Merv and Janis moved to North Battleford.

Merv enjoyed working alongside others for the benefit of the wider community. While still on the farm, he served as a councilor for the R. M of Prairie, a trustee for Biggar School Division #50, and on the boards of Mountrose Telephone Company, Battlefords Union Hospital, and the Cando Memorial Hall. In retirement, Merv assisted Joe Pyra with harvest, drove vehicles for Valley Ford, and for a short time, became a member-at-large for the city council of North Battleford. He loved being a member of the North Battleford Lion’s Club, devoting himself wholeheartedly to whatever service project was on the agenda. Merv also assisted many people with digging their wells through his talent for divining water. Merven is survived by his wife of 43 years, Janis Stepko, his daughter, Rev. Karen Stepko of Rhein, SK, his son, Steven Stepko of Saskatoon, his sister, Mary Marshall of Winnipeg, his mother-in-law Jean Dahl of Kindersley, two brothers-inlaw: Dr. Aron (Diane) Dahl of Calgary and Eldon (Cheryl) Dahl of Kindersley, and six nieces and nephews: Teresa (Chad) Edwards, Christine (Daniel) Neilson, John (Brittany) Dahl, Shallon Dahl (Thomas Blatchford), Richelle (Isaiah) Ortman, and James Dahl. Merv was predeceased by his parents, Steve and Anna Stepkow, father-in-law, Elvin Dahl, and brother-in-law, Gordon “Al” Marshall. A service of thanksgiving for Merven’s life was held on Wednesday, September 12th, 2018 at Third Avenue United Church in North Battleford with Rev. Fred Tinio officiating. Merv’s daughter, Karen, delivered the eulogy and served as urn bearer, his nieces Christine and Shallon shared scripture readings, and his fellow Lions served as a honour guard. Music was provided by Glenn Goodman, the Third Avenue Sanctuary Choir, and Robert MacKay, who sang “Amazing Grace”. Merv was interred at Prairie Willows Columbaria in the North Battleford City Cemetery. In memory of Merven, the family requested donations, designated for ‘Home Care’, to the Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation, Box 1358, North Battleford, SK S9A 3L8.

Merven’s family would like to thank Dr. Lipsett, the Saskatoon Cancer Clinic, Battlefords Union Hospital, and Home Care for their compassionate care throughout his illness. The moon is at last quarter Oct. 2, a little bit west of M44, the Beehive Cluster. The two share the same space Oct. 4, and Regulus, the bright star in Leo, joins up Oct. 5. Jupiter is four degrees south of a thin sliver of moon, just two days past new. Oct. 14, Saturn is a mere 1.8 degrees south of the moon, while Mars meets up with Luna Oct. 18. The moon is full Oct. 24, and by Oct. 31, is again close by the Beehive Cluster.

Mercury is coming out from behind the sun’s glare, but poorly placed for Northern Hemisphere viewers, as it hugs the horizon at sunset. It’s an excellent apparition for those people south of the Equator.

Venus rounds toward inferior conjunction Oct. 26, when it passes between the sun and Earth. Careful telescopic setup will allow observers the chance to see Venus in the daylight as it skirts by a little over six degrees south of the sun.

Great care must be taken to avoid looking directly at the sun, especially so through a telescope.

Mars loses brightness as Earth rapidly pulls away. Last month’s magnitude reduced from -2.1 to -1.3; this month it again halves from -1.2 to -0.6.

Watch for the first-quarter moon nearby Oct. 17 and 18.

Promises that fail, and ones that never will Advertisers are paid a great deal of money to come up with catchy slogans, mottos that are short and sharp, and become so identified with a product that, when we hear one, we almost immediately think of the other.

Here are a few slogans.

See if you can identify the products they advertise.

1) Snap! Crackle! Pop! 2) Let your fingers do the walking. 3) The quicker picker upper. 4) Fingerlickin’ good. 5) It keeps going, and going and going. .. 6) It takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

Each advertising slogan must not only be memorable, but it has to say something important about the product, or at least tease our imagination with some fantasy that can be linked to it. Driving a Toyota car may not make us exclaim, “Oh, what a feeling!” but the company wants us to imagine it will.

Now, here are the products represented by the slogans given earlier: 1) Kellog’s Rice Krispies; 2) the Yellow Pages; 3) Bounty paper towels; 4) Kentucky Fried Chicken; 5) Energizer batteries; 6) Timex watches.

Some advertising goes to impossible extremes in assuring potential customers that it can absolutely be relied upon not to let

them down. At the turn of the 20th century, the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company’s slogan was, “The light that never fails.”

But that’s a kind of God-like pronouncement that implies omniscience and omnipotence. Can any company, run by fallible mortals, in days of economic uncertainty, and in a world where change often seems to be the only consistency, say there’s no possibility they will ever fail a customer? No. “Almost never” might be closer to it, but that would hardly make an attractive motto.

Only Almighty God can speak in absolutes.

“I am the Lord, I do not change,” He says. (Mal. 3:6) And Christians can be “confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.”

(Phil. 1:6; cf. Rom. 8:35-39) Does that mean we’ll never suffer pain or disappointment? Or that we’ll always get what we pray for? No, because God’s ways are infinitely above our own, and He may be doing good things we don’t understand at the moment.

ing meetings in a remote mountain community in Kentucky. There was no telephone, and it was only accessible by a train that came up the mountain once a week. But after a couple of days a telegram

arrived for Mr. Luther saying his boy had taken seriously ill and had been rushed to the hospital.

Home was 600 miles away, and it would be four or five days before another train came. The musician

(Abridged) Gospel singer, Mahalia Jackson (Oct.26, 1911 – Jan. 27, 1972), penned and recorded these words but I’ve found myself humming them over the past few

days. Known as the Queen of Gospel, she encapsulated the panic folks must have felt while rain continued to fall during Noah’s time. Not known as any kind of singer, I find her words reflecting the sentiments I’ve often heard voiced over the past

felt so helpless.

Back at the place where he was billeted, he began to pray. Then, almost without thinking, he sat down at a piano and found himself improvising a new melody, as the words flashed into his mind, “Jesus never fails.” Then more words came, words that would eventually become part of a song: “Though the sky be dark and drear, / Fierce and strong the gale, / Just remember He is near / And He will not fail. / Jesus never fails, / Jesus never fails; / Heav’n and earth may pass away, / But Jesus week or so. “So much rain! So much flooding!

When will it stop!”

I have and considered how just a few days ago we were praying for rain.

Forest fires were raging in our province, though some still are. Tinder dry conditions produced drought and water restrictions. I could go on and on but won’t. The point I’m trying to make is that excesses of any kind create problems of their own.

While some excesses are beyond our control, including the weather, we are to choose carefully how we view and execute those matters

Shortly after, another telegraph message arrived to say the crisis had passed, and his son was expected to make a full recovery. But that was only the beginning of the blessings that would come from the song written at that time crisis. Twenty years later Art Luther wrote an article telling story after story that had been sent to him from around the world of times when believers in desperate need were encouraged by the words to keep trusting in the Lord. Jesus never fails!

That’s a motto to live by.

Once again, we can turn to the book of Proverbs for direction: “For by wise counsel you will wage your own war, and in a multitude of counsellors there is safety.” (24:6) Proverbs speaks of other areas where discretion is essential but in summing it up, Solomon writes: “Like a city that is broken down and without walls, leaving it unprotected is a man who has no self-control over his spirit [and sets himself up for trouble].”
