RCMP from Biggar Detachment and RCMP Major Crime North responded Friday afternoon to a rural property located near the village of Arlee to investigate the discovery of what appears to be human remains.

The discovery was made late

in the afternoon by a local resident.

More investigation is required to determine the identity of the deceased as well as the cause of death. It is expected an autopsy will be ordered but the date and time has not been confirmed.

Investigate amalgamation says Mayor Hamilton

It was a major bombshell that Mayor Ian Hamilton dropped on unsuspecting attendees of the annual Chamber of Commerce State of the City/ State of the Town Address in Battleford Wednesday.

In closing comments, Hamilton raised a hotbutton issue that has been brought up before at previous state of the city/town events – amalgamation.

“I’d like to acknowledge a significant fact – the state of the Town is significantly impacted and influenced by the state of the City, and vice-versa to some extent.

“I am often asked why are we not one community?

And I do often wonder what might be, or what could be,” said Hamilton.

The North Battleford mayor noted such a com-

munity would be 20,000 residents and would be the fifth largest city in Saskatchewan.

“Would prospective business interests view us more favourably as one city of 20,000, and the hub of a functional economic area representing over 9,000?

“Together, are we more than just the sum of our two parts?”

Hamilton suggested answers needed to be sought on what the benefits and costs would be.

“Do the potential costs outweigh the benefits of a favourable economic environment? Would the financial benefits overcome the sense of loss of autonomy?

I think we need to stop wondering and research the answers. We need actual information to assess the cost-benefit analysis of any proposal in considering partnerships, co-operation,

collaboration or perhaps amalgamation of our communities.

“And we need to co-operate, and we need to share information in order to have all that’s needed to evaluate the options. This is the challenge I leave you to consider as residents and business owners in our community.”

In speaking to reporters afterwards Mayor Derek Mahon of Battleford indicated there was very little enthusiasm for amalgamation with his own council.

“Existing council is not in favour of that whatsoever,” said Mahon.

Still, he acknowledged it could turn into an election issue for the fall’s municipal vote in Battleford and North Battleford.

Mahon said he would “actually be interested in candidates that came forward in the town of Battleford to push amalgamation

as their campaign status – I’d be really interested to see how well they would do in an election.”

Mahon did acknowledge the whole issue was one faced by other municipalities around the world – pointing to the various communities in the metro Edmonton, metro Vancouver and metro Phoenix areas as similar examples.

“Why is there Phoenix, why is there Glendale, why is there Mesa?” Mahon noted. “So it’s a question that’s out there.”

In the end, Mahon maintained his belief the appetite for amalgamation was simply not there among Battleford residents.

“What I’ve heard over my 16 years here is there’s not a lot of interest from the town of Battleford, so I’ll leave it at that for now and (it’ll) be interesting to see as it moves forward,” he said.

Mayor Derek Mahon has confirmed he is not running again for mayor of Battleford.

The news is not entirely unexpected, as much of the private speculation had been that Mahon would wrap up his long tenure on Battleford council this fall.

“The election of 2016 is 160 days away, it is the same day as my 55th birthday and I will not be seeking re-election as mayor,” said Mahon.

Even though Mahon is in his first term, he has been a part of Battleford council for 16 years, including 12 years as a councillor.

The news makes for an interesting 2016 municipal election in the town of Battleford and the speculation is due to start quickly on who the next mayor might be, and who might run for the job.

Mahont told reporters he would continue to “move forward” with the “next 160 days of the mandate.”

After his term is up, he

intends to focus on his consulting business that works with First Nation governments, a business he’s had for 25 years. He pointed to a number of projects that will likely take him out of town.

He also wants to spend more time with family and that will involve travelling outside the community as well.

“All my kids do not live in Battleford, so we’ll have to do a little bit more travelling to see them,” said Mahon, who pledged he would “spend time with the family and on the business that pays the bills a little bit more than the mayor’s salary.”

It will be a different story for Mayor Ian Hamilton. He confirmed to reporters he is seeking re-election for mayor for a third term.

“I have good health now,” said Hamilton, who said it has been affirmed by his doctors he is cancer free. “I look forward to another four years of working for the City of North Battleford.”

Hamilton had missed last year’s State of the City/ Town Address in order to go

under the knife for cancer surgery at Battlefords Union Hospital, something he acknowledged in his opening remarks.

“I was unable to be here last year, and I’m sure as hell happy I’m here this year,” Hamilton said.

Hamilton also made waves during the address by raising the amalgamation issue during his remarks. He told reporters he felt he had to raise it.

“I’m asked very often about this very issue. So I think I had to confront it at some point in time,” said Hamilton.

“I didn’t know when the best time would be but why not take the opportunity given to us to bring to the attention of the business community and the residents of our communities the opportunities that might exist should we decide to explore this opportunity, to explore this initiative.”

Mahon made no mention of amalgamation or of his decision to not run again during his speech, which

mainly focused on town initiatives and also the issue of what will happen with the historic post office.

“The town has been approached by realtors representing Canada Post in regard for available land for a new facility within the community,” said Mahon.

“Canada Post officials have recently responded that ‘a review process is taking longer than we originally expected.’ I wish I had more answers but that’s what I have.”

Mahon also noted that the town was in a period of transition with a number of senior staff retiring while the assistant administrator has also moved on to a new job. He introduced John Enns-Wind who is the new town chief administrative officer and who was in attendance at the address.

“Thank you to all the residents for your support over the last year,” said Mahon in his closing remarks. “We look forward to our continued growth and to a strong and vibrant Battleford.”

Grave relocation phase two underway

The relocation of a number of atrisk graves in the Battleford Cemetery begun last year is continuing this spring.

“At the moment, crews are out in the Battleford cemetery,” said Mayor Derek Mahon at Monday’s town council meeting.

Phase one and part of phase two were completed last year and more phase two work is underway now.

Mahon said any affected family members with questions or concerns were encouraged to contact the Town.

“The project has gone very well to date and seems to be going very well

this spring as well,” he said.

The graves being moved are among those at risk from slope instability in the northwest corner of the cemetery, which is perched along the bank of the North Saskatchewan River valley.

The relocation of the graves is being undertaken by Eternal Memories Funeral Service and Crematorium, a local company.

The graves affected are mainly those of pioneers of the area and North West Mounted Police members who died in the 1800s to early 1900s.

The Town was approved for a half million dollars in 2014 under the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program to be put toward mitigating the cemetery’s slump issues.

Tree Planting Milestone

City tax notices mailed out last Wednesday Staff

Get ready for your property tax bill, folks in North Battleford.

Passage of mill rate bylaws earlier this month has cleared the way for the City of North Battleford to issue tax notices for 2016.

They were mailed May 18 and the city has issued a news release reminding property owners payment is due by June 30. Penalties will start being applied July 1.

According to the budget adopted for 2016, the average property in North Battleford with taxable assessment of approximately $111,000 will see an increase of approximately 2.5 per cent in municipal taxes.

This assumes property assessment has not changed since 2015 and excludes the frontage charge for Underground Pipe and Asphalt Replacement (UPAR).

Permits drop

UPAR frontage charge increased by $0.60 per frontage foot per year, which equates to an increase of $30 per year for a typical residential lot with 50 feet of frontage.

Payments can be made by cheque at City Hall or through online banking. The City also offers a tax install-

ment payment plan divided into 12 monthly payments though direct deposit (the penalty is not applied) on the 10th day of the month or, if that date falls on a weekend, on the next banking day.

Police issued 14 tickets related to vulnerable road user safety during April’s traffic safety focus on pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists.

There were: • eight tickets for drivers failing to yield or stop for pedestrians or changing lanes when unsafe; • five tickets for pedes-

trians disobeying crosswalk signals or walking into the path of a vehicle; • one ticket for a motorcyclist failing to wear a helmet In addition, there were 5,427 speeding/aggressive driving offences, 301 impaired driving-related offences, 286 distracted driving offences (108 of those for cellphone use) and 414 seatbelt/car seat/booster seat violations.

Police remain focused on impaired driving throughout May.

Building permits are down in North Battleford not only for the month of April but the year as well.

According to the permit report to the Planning Committee of council Monday, for the first four months of 2016 the city has issued 32 building permits for $4,348,000, compared with 37 permits for $8,832,000 for the same period a year earlier.

In April, 12 permits were issued for $2,185,000, compared with 16 for $2,571,500 for the previous April.

Even though numbers were down from a year earlier, April did see a return to robust building activity in North Battleford.

Among the totals were two dwelling permits for $640,000 and four commercial alteration permits for $924,000. One industrial alteration permit was issued for $600,000.

There were also three residential alterations for $10,500, one new garage permit for $10,000 and one sign for $500.

Amalgamation: Who would reap the most?

Every now and again amalgamation pops up on the local political landscape.

This time it was North Battleford mayor Ian Hamilton speaking on the possible benefits of merging the governments of the City of North Battleford and Town of Battleford.

He makes some good arguments, pointing out a community of 20,000 (the fifth largest city in the province) and a surrounding economic hub of 9,000 would be a positive selling point.

He asks if potential costs would outweigh the benefits of what he describes as a favourable economic environment and whether the benefits would outweigh the loss of autonomy.

He also talked about co-operation and the need to share information.

It is telling that this idea was raised (again) by North Battleford’s mayor, because even superficial analysis of the pros and cons reveal it would be North Battleford that would benefit the most, not Battleford.

It’s no secret the City is deep in debt as it struggles to catch up with infrastructure repair that has snowballed because of decades-long neglect by successive administrations dedicated to holding the line on taxes. It was a focus that led to an infamous water contamination scandal and is now manifesting itself in a special UPAR frontage charge to address the burgeoning cost of repairing neglected roads and water and sewer lines.

Granted the focus of council and administration has made a huge turnaround in the years since cryptosporidum, but playing catch up is costly and the City has taken on significant debt financing to accomplish a lot in a short time.

Many in the community also point to the CUplex as an expensive drain on City resources.

Look to the other side of the river and you will find balanced budgets, infrastructure that is kept up to date on a constant basis and an entire mayor and council opposed to the notion of amalgamation. Heck, Battleford even has a vibrant and pleasant downtown.

As for co-operation between communities, that already exists on many fronts including the recreation grant paid to the City by the Town to support the use of City recreation resources by town residents.

On our Facebook page Becky Cuthbert says, “… no way.

I grew up in Battleford. I like it that way.”

Randy Wasson-Wintonyk simply says, “No way.”

Roger Piatt commented, “Lived here for more than 20 years and never understood why these two communities were not one legal entity.” Piatt lives in North Battleford.

Dear Editor We read that this area must provide $8 million for furnishings for the new Saskatchewan Hospital, which is essentially a provincial facility. We are reminded that local jobs will be created which will, we are told, benefit the local economy in years to come.

Dear Editor North Battleford wants to amalgamate with Battleford. I think that they may be after Battleford’s tax dollar. I think that that complex is costing more than they thought.

Session opens with speech from the throne Last week the 28th session of the Saskatchewan legislature got under way.

The events of the week included the swearing-in of all legislative assembly members Monday, followed by the unveiling in the evening of the dome on the top of the legislature, after restoration work over the past number of months.

Tuesday morning saw the election of a new speaker, with Saskatchewan Party MLA Corey Tochor of Saskatoon Eastview winning that vote.

Tuesday afternoon, the 51 Saskatchewan Party MLAs and 10 New Democrats gathered in the legislature to hear the throne speech from Lt. Gov. Vaughn Solomon Schofield. The throne speech outlines the government’s objectives and priorities for the upcoming session.

The following are some of the highlights from the transcript. The speech began with a thank-you to all candidates and those who took part in the election, and then proceeded to remember those in Fort McMurray.

My government also wants to thank the people of Saskatchewan for their heartfelt responses to the horrific events in La Loche and in Fort McMurray.

Saskatchewan will continue to stand with those communities as they recover and heal from thes.

On April 4th, my government was re-elected based on a campaign that made few specific promises, but instead made one simple yet significant commitment – to keep Saskatchewan strong.

During this session, my government will keep its promises and it will honour its commitment to keep Saskatchewan strong in three key areas: - My government will keep our economy strong; - It will keep the province’s finances strong; and - It will keep Saskatchewan’s position in Canada strong by always standing up for Saskatchewan’s interests.

Over the past eight years, my government has made record investments in highways and infrastructure, repairing and rebuilding over 10,000 kilometres of Saskatchewan roads.

Still, there is more work to be done and more highways to be fixed.

Starting this year and over the next three years, my government will fix more highways through a $70 million surge in highway repair and maintenance.

This is part of a new Highways 2020 Plan to invest $2.7 billion in highways and transportation capital over the next four years.

My government will also continue to move forward on many other important infrastructure projects underway throughout the province – schools, hospitals, long-term care facilities, the Regina Bypass – using both traditional funding models and public-private partnerships or P3s to ensure Saskatchewan residents receive the best possible value for their tax dollars.

My government is committed to ensuring Saskatchewan never returns to those days of decline and that this new era of growth continues.

To that end, my government will consult with industry on the establishment of a new growth tax incentive.

It will be the first innovation tax rate of its kind established in North America.

My government is also committed to helping small, home-based food businesses grow in Saskatchewan.

To that end, it will allow home-based food producers

to sell high-quality, low-risk foods, prepared in the home, directly to consumers and retailers.

These new initiatives build on many steps my government has already taken to encourage economic growth and diversification, including: - Lowering taxes for businesses, individuals, families, homeowners and farmers; - Reducing the burden of unnecessary regulation and red tape; - Working with Saskatchewan exporters to open and expand new markets for Saskatchewan products around the world; - Actively promoting Saskatchewan’s tourism industry; and - Investing in skills training to match Saskatchewan’s labour market needs, with a specific emphasis on First Nations and Metis education and skills training.

Saskatchewan farmers, ranchers and agribusinesses are also keeping our economy strong.

In 2015, Saskatchewan’s agri-food exports reached nearly $15.3 billion, surpassing my government’s Growth Plan target of $15 billion in exports by 2020.

The government also acknowledged a number of major projects going on in the province including one in Edam and Vawn: - Husky Energy will invest more than $1 billion related to heavy oil thermal projects creating approximately 90 full-time jobs and 500 construction jobs; The government congratulated the companies for their ongoing confidence in Saskatchewan’s future by investing in new projects and creating new jobs.

pledged to improve the Graduate Retention Program.

My government is now improving the Graduate Retention Program to allow recipients to use up to $10,000 of their GRP benefits toward the down payment on their first home in Saskatchewan.

In this session, my government will also introduce a legislative amendment to remove the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority from The Crown Corporations Public Ownership Act. This change is part of a campaign commitment to convert 40 governmentowned liquor stores to private stores, add 12 new private liquor stores and create a level playing field for liquor retailers in order to provide more choice, more convenience and more competitive pricing for Saskatchewan consumers.

The Speech from the Throne also outlined a pledge to expand the “twofor-one” model recently introduced for MRI scans to also include CT scans,to expand an innovative remote technology health care pilot project in Pelican Narrows to other northern communities and to amend The Saskatchewan Employment Act to ensure those caring for a family member in the final stages of life will be eligible for 28 weeks of leave per year.

My government believes in a strong Saskatchewan within a strong and united Canada.

But it is troubling that today, there are some in this country who, given the opportunity, would shut down major parts of Saskatchewan’s economy and put thousands of hard-working Saskatchewan people out of work, all in the name of some misguided dogma that has no basis in reality.

There are those who are not comfortable with and even oppose much of what we produce in Saskatchewan and how we produce it - oil and gas, coal and uranium, livestock and grains.

They would prefer that those sectors did not exist and that the thousands of jobs in those sectors did not exist.

They look at those jobs like they are somehow harming the country and the world.

To those people, my government has a message.

You are wrong.

You could not be more wrong.

Saskatchewan feeds Canada and the world.

Saskatchewan supplies energy to Canada and to the world.

What we do here makes Canada a better place.

What we do here makes the world a better place.

My government will take every occasion to stand up for this province, to defend those vital sectors and to stand up for every one of those jobs.

toward improving seniors’ care by hiring more registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and continuing care aides in long-term care facilities.

During this session, my government will also fulfill its commitment to help seniors remain in their own homes longer by allowing seniors with household incomes under $70,000 to defer the education portion of their property taxes, beginning in 2017.

The government also committed to extending the current net metering program for residential and commercial customers for another two years, as well as forging a new partnership with the First Nations Power Authority which will see First Nations develop 40 megawatts of clean energy generated from solar power and flare gas.

Despite the challenges in our resource sector, Saskatchewan’s finances remain strong.

Our budget deficit remains much smaller and more manageable than our neighboring provinces.

Our debt to GDP ratio is the second lowest in Canada and we continue to enjoy a triple-A credit rating.

In two weeks, my government will present a budget that will keep Saskatchewan strong by keeping our provincial finances strong and by ensuring that the budget returns to balance by 2017.

At Fort Battleford on Thursday afternoon, an honours and recognition ceremony was held in which a number of employees from the RCMP received awards.

These included members of Battlefords RCMP detachment as well as those from the surrounding area.

Lt. Gov. Vaughn Solomon Schofield as well as F Division commanding officer Brenda Butterworth-Carr presided over the awarding of honours.

Also awarded at the event were a number of St. John’s Ambulance Life Saving Awards going to those who used first-aid skills to save a life.

The list of honours began with long-service Awards: 35 years: S/Sgt. Anthony Shumilak, whose tenure

with the RCMP included stints in the Battlefords; 25 years: Civilian member Murray Beavers, also of Battlefords detachment; 20 years: Sgt. Brent Olberg, who served in the Battlefords and is now with Saskatoon major crimes division; 30s year: Gertrude Maxwell (not in attendance at the ceremony).

Oct. 24, 2014, Cst. Doug Lachapelle teamed up with other members and used his first aid skills to save the life of a woman found unconscious in a North Battleford restaurant. He performed CPR until the woman was able to breathe on her own and stayed with her until emergency response arrived.

Chelsy Villeneuve used first aid skills in resuscitating an individual near Meadow Lake on May 20, 2015 along Highway 55 near a weigh station. Cst. Vanditmars and Villeneuve, an off-duty nurse, worked as a team with two other people to perform life-saving CPR and first aid until EMS arrived.

ATV injury prevention Tips for safe summer riding

STARS air ambulance is reminding ATV riders to focus on safety.

Over the May long weekend in 2015, STARS responding to 107 serious ATV emergencies.

“May long weekend is the start of the trauma season,” said STARS CEO Andrea Robertson. “This year we hope to reduce injuries by asking the public to focus on safety when riding allterrain vehicles.”

The Canadian Off-Highway Vehicle Distributors Council is also encouraging riders to stay safe this summer.

“ATVs are not toys, but they are fun. Knowing all you can about your ATV and the places you can ride is the best preparation for safe and enjoyable riding,” stated JoAnne Farquhar, director of communications for the COHV. “Remember, ATVs are intended for off-highway use only. Never operate an ATV on pavement and always wear helmets and protective clothing,” added Farquhar.

Kevin Hasselberg nominated for CJHL Coach of the Year

Not only did the head coach and general manager of the North Stars win the SJHL Coach of the Year award, he has now been nominated as one of the best in the Canadian junior hockey scene.

"I’m very proud of the organization and everyone who has contributed to this," Kevin Hasselberg said, "You look at the names that are recognized on that list and you're pretty thankful to be recognized that way."

Other nominees are Rick Swan of the Bonnyville Pontiacs (AJHL), Blake Spiller of the Portage Terriers (MJHL), Fred Harbinson of the Penticton Vees (BCHL), Dustin Treylen of the Brock-

ville Braves (CCHL) and Pierre Petroni of the College Francais de Longueuil (QJHL).

The award criteria is based on the coach's team and individual performance during the regular season.

Each of the 10 CJHL leagues submit a candidate for the award and then a representative from each league ranks their top five choices from the nominees.

Since Hasselberg took over behind the bench during the 2011-12 season, the Battlefords North Stars have seen continued success with an overall record of 174-8410-14.

Most recently, the North Stars took home the regular season title for the first time since 1994-95. Fans will see this banner as soon

as the next campaign gets underway. Hasselberg led the North Stars to their best

winning percentage in the franchise's 42-year history and claimed their second

Finning Division title in three seasons.

Hasselberg did a tremendous job of recruiting this year, using a mixture of speed and size en route to a 43-win campaign. He has now reached the 40-win plateau in two of his four years at the helm. Hasselberg was able to get the best out of his skaters under his leadership. Layne Young, Coby Downs and Cody Spagrud were named to the SJHL all-rookie team. Young was named the SJHL rookie of the year, Igor Leonenko put together an impressive campaign (47 goals, 41 assists) and won the Finning Division MVP, Connor Sych was the co-winner for the Finning Division top defenceman; and several players won weekly and monthly

sion, paired with hundreds of other hockey games and skating events. The concession is operated by the North West Hockey Development Association and, for another year, have generously given a donation to the club.

NWHDA is a group of nearly 25 volunteers and has been running the concession for years.

NWHDA has been a strong supporter of the Bat-

tlefords North Stars and local hockey during their time here. This season was the most profitable for the NWHDA in 30 years.

After the bills were tallied and expenses paid, NWHDA made a donation to the North Stars for $10,000.

It doesn't come without the support of a great staff, an amazing family and a very supportive wife, and obviously a tremendous organization. When you have all of those things in place, it makes your job a lot easier."

The recipient of the 2016 Coach of the Year award will be announced this week.

Viceroy baseball inducted into the Hall of Fame Submitted The Saskatchewan baseball Hall of Fame will be inducting the Viceroy Baseball team, 1946-1975, into the team category Saturday, Aug. 20 in Battleford.

This team was first formed by veterans returning from the war, as well as local citizens and farmers from Sussex and Surprise Valley School District. In 1949 or 1950 the team attended a big tournament at Indian Head.

For a few weeks, a league was formed with teams from Viceroy, Readlyn, Bengough and Crane Valley. These teams played for the Constituency Cup. In the final game, Viceroy defeated the Readlyn Orioles.

In 1950, Eddy McDaniels and Rob Reburg were hired

by Viceroy to teach the fundamentals of the game. This helped to establish the excellent play of the team.

Over the years, the Viceroy team played in many sports days in Saskatchewan, including tournaments in Viceroy, Bengough, Ogema, Crane Valley, Ormiston, Willow Bunch, Pangman, Radville, Fillmore, Coronach, Rockin Beach, Dahinda, Assiniboia, Flintoff, Gravelbourg, Wood Mountain, Glentwort, Cardross, Mitchellton, Crestwynd, Easons Grove, Davidson, Eyebrow, Tugaske, Tuxford, Dilke, Grand Coulee, Rouleau, Spring Valley, Weyburn and Kronau.

They travelled across

the line, once in the back of a farm truck, and played in Flaxville and under the lights at Scobey and Glasgow in Montana.

In most of these games, Viceroy played in the final games, making enough

money to purchase equipment, pay travel expenses as well as uniforms and jackets every few years. In 1963, gloves were purchased for every player.

Tony Schmidt was the manager for 50 years, start-

ing in 1950.

The official scorekeeper and statistician for most of the years was Marjorie Schmidt. Game scores, batting averages, pitching records and runs batted in were all recorded.

Schmidt was also the catcher for most of the games.

Pitchers were Orris Monson, Alfred Monson, Mel Tendler, Andy Volsky, Herb Schmidt, Ernest Tendler, Garth Pinfold, Lawrence Shenher, Rob Shenher, Jerry Schmidt, Keith Monson, Ron Tendler and Ed Shenher.

First base was Ed Tendler.

Second base was Andy Volksy and Harold Tendler.

Hardy prairie perennials, recent introductions

Siberian Iris Concord Crush (Iris Sibirica): Native to central Europe and Asia, Siberian iris are very tough and do well on the prairies. With large, vibrant blue, “ruffled” double flowers in early summer, Concord Crush is 70 centimetres or more in height with narrow blue-green, grass-like foliage. Unlike the bearded iris, Siberian iris do best in full sun and evenly moist soil well amended with organic matter. Once established, it is easily divided every three or four years. Introduced by Bob Bauer and John Coble in 2009. Deer resistant. A four-inch mulch layer will retain soil moisture.

Autumn Fire showy stonecrop (Sedum spectabilis): In the same group as the well known Autumn Joy, Autumn Fire was selected for its tight growth habit,

thick succulent blue-green foliage, and more brightlycoloured dusty-rose flowers, which deepen to a rusty red. Although the species is native to China, Autumn Fire is a Quebec Norseco Nursery introduction. It’s taller than Autumn Joy, with sturdier, less floppy stems.

Once mature, plants have a height of 50 centimetres and a spread of 40 centimetres.

Blooming in late summer and early fall, it also provides winter interest. Plant in full sun and well drained soil. Drought-tolerant once established. Easily divided once established.

Hosta Empress Wu (Hosta): If you want an enormous focal point, Empress Wu will be your hosta of choice this season. With an impressive mature height of 110 centimetres and a spread of 120 centimetres, it’s hard to beat and is considered “the largest hosta known in the industry.” But it may take up to five years to achieve its mature size. Named after an Empress of China (624-705 AD), it has thick, dark green, deeply veined leaves and forms an enormous clump with reddish-violet flowers in August. Hostas do best

For many, gardening is a competitive sport. Some brag that theirs is bigger, better, brighter or bloomier (OK, not a real word, but it fits in the sequence). Others like a challenge and go to extremes to grow what others find impossible on the prairies. While others are connoisseurs or collectors – these gardeners like to have something that no one else has: rare and/or expensive.

And lastly, there are the ones who need to have the latest and newest. These latter gardeners may be in interested in the following recent introductions: Tall bearded iris Mallory Kay (Iris germanica): Mallory Kay is a lightly scented, dark cherry red iris, 80 centimetres or more in height. Iris hybridizer Larry Johnson introduced it in 1989. Its green swordlike foliage remains attractive throughout the growing season. Bearded iris have graced prairie gardens almost since European settlement. Their demands are minimal: full sun and welldrained soil. They are easily divided every three or four years. This is best done after flowering in late June or

Scent in the summer garden Summer evenings are fabulous for enjoying the sweet, and yes, romantic scents of your garden. Summer on the prairies is short so spending as much time as possible outside is always recommended. If you have a spot in your garden that you frequent in the evening then plan to plant to include marvelous scent. Better yet, plant a window box or other suitable planting outside your bedroom window. As the cool night air wafts into your bedroom, it could carry the evocative scents of a host of truly exotic flowers that might only bloom at night.

Many of the night blooming plants are sweetly scented to attract insects for pollination.

For the best lemon scent (and taste) plant some lemon verbena. It is a truly delicious scent that conjures

up the extreme pleasure of sucking on lemon sherbet sweets, tangy on the outside while at the same time being extremely refreshing on the inside. On the prairies this is a tender herb that is best grown in a container of some kind. Bring it inside in the autumn, give it a variety of life support treatment before you finally cut it back and let it rest in preparation of another summer outside.

Other annuals that have lots of scent for summer include any of the scented geraniums. Lemon, peppermint, rose and even chocolate scents are available. You might also get the added benefit of enjoying them inside for at least part of the winter. A must for every garden is evening scented stock.

This is a rather small plant that comes to life after dark to reveal purple flowers that

carry a wonderful spicy sent that will literally ambush those in close proximity.

A couple of other great choices are nicotiana and heliotrope. Nicotiana (a member of the tobacco family) is a simply splendid flower that becomes intensely scented at night. The ivory flowers are most scented, but it also is available in pink, red, and green.

Brugmansia is a bushy plant with large trumpet-like flowers. They are extremely fragrant with a spicy, exotic scent. Please do be cautious as all parts of this plant are poisonous.

Even though we garden in a rather extreme climate, it is still possible to grow lavender as an annual. Give it full sun and well-drained soil. The purple to white flowers are a marvel and emit a complex scent. Once

Nature is also a remarkable thing with creating a balance that we as stewards of the land constantly disrupt.

It is important for all gardeners and other stewards of the land to learn about the individual critter and its life cycle to determine whether it is friend or foe!

Beneficial insects (sometimes referred to as bio-control agents) are naturally in nature or readily available to farmers, growers and others. They fall into two basic categories with some being predatory and some being more parasitic in nature. Some do a little “host feeding” of both the parasitic and predatory nature.

Some of the common predacious beneficial are beetles, wasps, mites and true bugs.

The more parasitic beneficial are often mini-wasps and nematodes.

Introducing any biological control can be very effective but does not act like a pesticide solution. For instance if you have a fly problem, you can spray a multitude of products on these flies and effectively gain control for a while. However, the flies evolve quite quickly and often become more im-

mune to the chemical control agents, which in turn causes us to use more toxic products to gain the same control. A biological works by interrupting the life cycle of the problem critter, (in this case the fly) and over time gains control of the population. This is not an instant fix but takes some time to be effective. The predator or parasite grows in number in response to the host and then decreases in number as the host dies off. This is a somewhat similar scenario to the coyote and the rabbit, or many other examples in our ecosystem.

It was my personal introduction into the beneficial world when I was a intensive livestock producer and gave an ideal environment to the many species of flies by providing livestock, bedding debris and my home landscape to aid them in living a happy life. As I am less than enamoured with flies, I strove to find a control measure that was sustainable but also economically feasible and effective. I discovered parasitic wasps whose only purpose in life is to source out the pupae of flies, and lay their eggs in those pupae. The parasitic wasp lar-

Other favourites that surely should not be forgotten include sweet peas, lilac, mock orange and thyme.

Bugs can be beneficial for our balance Now that summer is almost officially upon us and most days there is more warmth in the air, there is also evidence of many buglike critters enjoying the sun! The world of insects is fascinating as to the gardener their life cycle, the colonies they may live in and their ability to hunt for food all makes them rather remarkable. Even the thought of those little critters walking across your garden in perspective must be like walking from Saskatoon to Regina or Edmonton depending on the size of your garden area.

Sometimes the response by gardeners to any of these critters is to squish or spray now and be rid of those ugly and damaging pests! However, not all bugs/insects are a danger to the plants in our gardens – not all of the little critters are bad! Some present a more neutral side, doing neither harm nor good, happily living their life in the garden world. Arrangements were entrusted to Battlefords Funeral Service. ____________________________________________________ HUTCHISON: Alan Hutchison was born December 20, 1950 in North Battleford to Lily and Bill Hutchison. He moved to the existing farm in 1955 with his parents and younger brother Alec. When he managed to get a driver’s license, he found employment at the Gardiner Dam construction site and helped build some of the connecting canals.

Later he started work at Premium Feeds where he met up with his future brothers-in-law Ken & Keith Sinclair. He found road construction as a way to travel.

This led to the Dempster Highway and the love of the north. There are also many a grid road in Saskatchewan and Alberta that Alan worked on. Alan met his future wife Gina at Gina’s grandparents Edie & Matt Parkinson where he was staying. They were quietly pushed together. Judge Policha gave Gina and Alan a life sentence December 23, 1980.

Alan shared his birthday with his mother-in-law Olive Southgate. He and Gina were blessed with a beautiful daughter Andrea December 1, 1988. His trucking career took off after Andrea was born. He hauled tanks and all equipment involved in oil production and later fertilizer. Trucking also involved family along. We saw a lot of country from behind the windshield of a semi. Trucking was very important to him and he used it to allow him to travel here, there and everywhere. His world came crashing down June 15, 2005 when he lost his beloved daughter, from which he never recovered.

In 2014 Alan was slowed down by cancer and all its treatments, but it did not stop him from travelling. Mother’s Day evening ended with Alan in hospital. In the afternoon hours of Monday, May 9, 2016, the family was called and at 10 p.m. with his wife at his side, he went to meet Andrea, his angel. Service Of Celebration And Thanksgiving For Alan’s Life was held on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. From St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church with Minister Mrs. Joyce Salie. Journalist and author by profession, she threw herself into volunteer work from Habitat for Humanity to refugee and immigrant support as well as countless other causes. LOCH: It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sharlene Loch on Thursday, May 5, 2016, days shy of her 54th birthday. Sharlene leaves behind to forever cherish her memory her loving husband Keith; sons Mitchell (grandson Cohen), and Codie (Kat); her mother Gloria (Ed); sisters: Linda, Sandy (Albert), and Brenda; her stepmother Shirley of North Battleford; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She is predeceased by her father Ron Belanger; and her grandparents Jonas and Marie Sjoberg, and Joseph and Mary Belanger. Sharlene had the heart of an angel and the mouth of a trucker. She was extremely passionate about her family and taking care of others. Sharlene spent her life making sure everyone was healthy, happy, and well taken care of.

She was direct, hardworking, compassionate, motivated, honest, and always there for her family, friends, and patients. No matter who you were or what walk of life you came from, Sharlene was there with an open mind, an open soul, and an open heart.

Sharlene was also known for her amazing toffee. Whether it was at bakes sales or given as a gift, you couldn’t help but eat half a tray at once. She always baked and cooked enormous amounts of food because leaving her house hungry was not an option. Sharlene loved to garden, mainly her flowers. You could always find her singing, mainly Tina Turner’s “Addicted To Love”. Sharlene also loved reading Viking romance novels and writing poetry. If you couldn’t find her doing those things, she was probably shopping or at the casino. She also enjoyed the amazing jewelry gifts from the doctors’ trips around the world. She was quite the fashionista. A service to celebrate Sharlene’s life was held on Monday, May 9, 2016 from the Chapel of Sallows and McDonald - Wilson and Zehner Funeral Home. She was laid to rest with her father Ron at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens following the service. Giving them the world I gazed out into our yard and focused on the world I have created for my little daycare family. My gaze was directed towards what is pretty much a dream come true for the child version of myself.

I remember playing in the basement of my friend’s home and creating a world of make believe with boxes.

I remember creating a pretend “house” out of a place in a barn at the bottom of the hill with a childhood friend. I remember wishing for child-sized furniture for this land of make believe.

I thought of all I have accumulated for my imaginative young daycare family. The little kitchen, indoor picnic table, doll-tending centre, dolls and all the accessories I could have ever wished for. We have Fisher Price toys bursting out the seams. Castles, princes and princesses, houses, farms, circuses, a zoo, fences, accessories and all the Little Animals and People one could ever hope for.

We have cars, plains, boats, helicopters, an airport, car mats and a plethora of car ramps. We have trikes, scooters, wagons and little “Fred Flintstone” cars (Little Tykes cars where the kids propel them with their feet just like on the Flintstones). Yes. Plural.

There is more than one of almost every little thing we have. I have created my own childhood dream within our home. I would have given anything to live in this world when I was a young girl.

I grew up watching “Bewitched” and wishing I could watch episode after episode of my most favorite show. I also wished I could twitch my nose and make my wishes come true. That is almost exactly what has happened. Children can watch episode after episode of their favorite TV show and not have to wait another week for it to air on a television that receives only two channels, three at best. Saturday morning cartoons?

Our kids have cartoons on demand at the flick of a few buttons.

LIFE as I know it

By Colleen Crawford Special outings to the beach and visiting the playground that had the “twirly slide” were rare treats in my day. Now we of six parks within walking distance of our home; two of which have paddling pools. Two others have spray parks. Every park is new and different and exciting. Heavens, we even have a “park” right in our own back yard!

I dreamed of being able to walk to school (we lived on the farm until I was halfway through Grade 4). Now I can see the school from our living room window. I remember having a basketball hoop in behind the garage and thinking we were in heaven. Now, there is a paved basketball court in the school ground at the end of our block.

Kids these days can entertain themselves by turning on the TV, watching a movie of their choice, play on electronic gadgets geared from ages “zero” to “100” and tune into the world wide web at a keystroke. And kids know how to do all of this!

But do you know the most amazing part of all of this? Do you know what captivates their interest every time? Lady bugs, ants, butterflies and caterpillars. Boxes, margarine containers, rocks and dandelions. Give a child “the world” and that is exactly what they expect.

Open up the doors and let them explore the world and there is no end to what they can find to amuse themselves.

I have created the world I have always wanted and opened my doors to share it with my young little daycare family. And they would have been content with boxes and bugs. Go figure.

It’s about time for something big to happen Scientists speak of the space-time continuum as a connected whole. Human beings move through three dimensions of space, length, width and height, but in doing so are moving also in a fourth dimension: time. For example, I can be at home at ten o’clock, and shopping at the store at eleven. I have not only traveled through space, but also through time.

Because of the constraints of time, we are often made aware of it. Am I on time for that appointment, or late, or early? We speak of now and then.

Where we are at present, and where we expect to be in the future. We own clocks, and wear watches, so we can handle our time in a responsible way. If we are late, we may hear, upon arriving, a cranky and impatient, “It’s about time!”

Another expression about time that we use is: sooner or later.

Surprisingly, that phrase has been around for several centuries. Found in writings as early as 1577, it’s meant to indicate something particular may happen in the short term, sooner than we expected. Or, it may happen in the longer term, later than we thought. However, there is an air of certainty about it. It may be soon, or it could come later on but, depend upon it, it will

happen.

To some extent, that could be said about the coming of spring. We may know the date when spring officially begins.

But, in our climate, it’s not unusual for spring-like weather to begin sooner than that – or later. If we are still struggling with winter boots and icy sidewalks when spring is supposed to have sprung, and when farm fields are still mantled in drifted snow, it can be disheartening.

Something similar could be said about the second coming of Christ. A little over 2,000 years ago, the eternal Son of God broke into the space-time continuum, born of a virgin, in Bethlehem. After spending about 35 years on Earth, He returned to His heavenly Father, with the promise that He would one day return. (Jn. 14:2-3) Unbelieving skeptics deny it. They often adhere to a theory of evolution – a

word that means an unrolling. That suggest the universe and everything in it has unrolled by chance and accident, and will continue to do so. That there is no

God who created all things, let alone is involved with His creation. “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were,” they say. (II Pet. 3:4) But Christ’s return will happen sooner or later, and Christians struggle with conflicting feelings about that. On the one hand, we desire that as many as possible hear the message of the gospel, and receive Christ as Saviour.

The Lord Himself has told us to “go into all the world and preach the gos-

pel.” (Mk. 15:16) We have ministry goals we want to fulfil.

However, the second coming is closely tied to the consummation of all things, the eternal condemnation of sinners and the eternal blessing of the saints. We look with longing at the description of a future time when “God will wipe away every tear from [our] eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” (Rev. 21:4)

What can I do to help?

Expected, or perhaps even above expectations around the news reports and Facebook posts examining the devastation of the Fort McMurray fires, is the response coming from people across the country and beyond to the needs of evacuees.

From individuals to small towns to major cities and corporations, donations of every kind have been pouring in. Rent-reduced or even totally free accommodations, clothing and shoes of every size, food, bedding, the list goes on and on. It’s gratifying to realize that a culture that is often

me grateful and proud to call these folks my fellow citizens.

In an appreciation-filled interview with the media, one evacuee expressed his thanks then added this sobering thought. Getting used to being conscious of the needs of others while countering that with wisdom isn’t always easy. Perhaps it might be best summed up in this question, what can I do to help?

Helping then is expanded to include not only an immediate response to an immediate need but also investing in helping make a long-term difference in the life of someone.

Wherever we are or find ourselves, there will always be needs to be met. Let’s get used to being kind to one another.
