Highheel Ideals The annual Walk a Mile In Her Shoes event had a new twist this year. This year, the guys had to walk a mile in high heels down the streets of North Battleford on Thursday evening, with money raised from the event going to support the Battlefords and Area Sexual Assault Centre. The route began at Freedom Skate and Snow and went down 100th Street to 11th Avenue, where the participants then crossed over towards the Capitol and made their way back up 100th Street. Gold Eagle Lodge donates to Humane Society

In the first of what looks to be an annual occurrence, the Gold Eagle Lodge presented the Battlefords Humane Society with $1,000 on Monday, Aug. 28. The Gold Eagle Lodge held a golf tournament in May at the Jackfish Lodge Golf and Conference Centre. Oh Canada We Sing For Thee! hits Dekker Centre stage Thursday

Sept. 14 might as well be July 1, as Way-to-Go Productions brings their show, Oh Canada We Sing For Thee! to the Dekker Centre on Thursday.

Oh Canada We Sing For Thee! is a touring group that performs hits by a number of Canada’s bestknown artists. The extensive list of covers features songs by Gordon Lightfoot, Celine Dion, Neil Young, k.d. lang, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell and Stan Rogers, among many others.

At the helm is Leisa Way, a singer who has been performing and recording for many years.

Of the shows she’s created over the years, she said this show stands out.

“This one has been so overwhelming with the audience response because they thank us for reminding them how they should be so proud to be Canadian,” Way said.

Some past musical styles include country, British Invasion and Christmas music, along with a Peggy Lee tribute.

In addition to singing,

Way has toured as an actress, having starred in Anne of Green Gables early in her career, and a number of other roles since, including off-Broadway work.

Choosing individual songs to represent artists was difficult, Way said, due to the long careers and

variety of work by some of Canada’s artists. Way surveyed some of her friends to gauge what was popular.

The accomplishments of the Wayward Wind Band, who make up the rest of the ensemble, features members with 25, 30, 35 and 40 years of experience playing and touring.

The range of backgrounds, including blues, pop, jazz, bluegrass and country, allow the musicians to interpret the diversity of musical styles that come with famous Canadian music.

Performing songs that everybody knows sometimes produces a physical response from audiences, Way said.

“You can just feel the air in the theatre. Everyone takes an intake of breath and they go ‘Oh yes, I love this song,’” The show is like taking people across Canada.

“It’s really visual when people hear the words to these songs, they start to see Canada. You can just feel the pride as people listen to those words about building our country and how it started and the railway, and the people who gave their lives to that.”

Something Way has found surprising is the appeal of fiddle music. While not many across the country have been raised on it, she said it generally elicits an enthusiastic audience response.

“I’ve discovered just about everybody loves a good fiddle tune, whether they think they do or not,” Way said.

In between songs, Way said she explains some of the context in which they arose, such as the artists’ life circumstances.

Way also brings her theatricality to the performance: shows features 12 costume changes and 11 wig changes.

The North Battleford date is also Way’s birthday. She said she plans to celebrate with her husband, who’ll also be on the tour for 10 days, along with the Dekker Centre’s Moe McGuinty, who like Way’s parents, is from North Bay, Ont. Oh Canada We Sing For Thee! begins at 8 p.m.

Thursday, Sept. 14. Tickets are $40, and can be purchased at the Dekker Centre box office, or online. The performers will be available after the show to pose for photos and chat with audiences.

Cheveldayoff brings leadership bid to Bfds

Ken Cheveldayoff brought his bid for the Saskatchewan Party leadership to the Battlefords on Wednesday night.

Cheveldayoff held a campaign event at the Blend restaurant in North Battleford, a chance for local party members to meet the candidate and hear his policy positions, and determine whether he has what it takes to take over from Brad Wall as Premier.

He is one of five contenders in a race that will be decided next Jan. 27. It is also one many observers believe is dividing along “rural” and “urban” fault lines among the candidates. But Cheveldayoff looks to be staking out a middle ground.

His campaign slogan is “rural roots, urban strong,” a reference to his own background. While Cheveldayoff is the longtime MLA for Saskatoon Willowgrove, his roots are in Blaine Lake where he spent the first 18 years of his life.

Cheveldayoff points to that experience as “the best of both worlds,” something he says will help the party win.

“For the Saskatchewan party to win government next time around, we need to win the urban seats as well as the rural seats,” said Cheveldayoff in speaking to the News-Optimist.

“I think I’ve got the experience. I think I’ve got the background to do that, along with the five cabinet positions that I’ve held over the years, everything from Crown corporations to environment and several in between. I think that I have a very strong case to be a very strong premier in this province.”

The Northwest region is already one the candidate is familiar with. Cheveldayoff ran federally in Battlefords-Meadow Lake for the Progressive Conservatives.

Unfortunately, he was buried in the infamous Kim Campbell election of 1993 in which his party was reduced to two seats. Despite that, he took away positives from that experience. “I made so many great friends

and some of them are here tonight,” he said.

His campaign has gotten off to a fast start, he said.

“It’s been fantastic.

We had 300 people at our launch in Saskatoon, and we have hit the ground running and been working hard ever since.”

The candidate has been travelling the province, which included stops the previous day in the Watrous, Lanigan and Humboldt.

wasted no time making his way to the Northwest region. In addition to North Battleford, Cheveldayoff had also gone to Meadow Lake earlier in the week at the urging of party members who had planned to support local MLA Jeremy Harrison, who withdrew from the leadership race a few days earlier.

Moe admits part in fatal collision Staff Sask Party leadership contender Scott Moe is addressing a 1997 motor vehicle collision in which another person was killed.

Moe, MLA for Rosthern-Shellbrook, said alcohol was not a factor in this particular incident; however, he did receive a traffic violation.

Moe had previously been convicted for impaired driving in 1992, something which he has admitted publicly and which was an issue during the 2016 provincial election.

His campaign has issued a news release about the 1997 incident. Moe’s statement is as follows: In 1997, I was travelling on a gravel road near Shellbrook to work on our

farm. While crossing the highway, I was involved in a collision that resulted in the loss of a person’s life.

The fact that a life was lost is something I have lived with every day since this happened.

Alcohol was not a factor in this collision. However, there was a full police investigation that resulted in a traffic violation. I have been forthcoming about this with my constituents and the media, including during the 2016 general election when I responded to media inquiries with these details.

I will continue to be honest with my constituents, supporters, and colleagues about who I am, and the mistakes that I have made, as I pursue the leadership of the Saskatchewan Party.

from North Battleford, as well as a 43-year-old man from Battleford. One person has been charged with disobeying a stop sign and driving without due care and attention under the Traffic Safety Act. Further investigation is underway.

Man chases individual around with a machete in Cochin Staff

Battlefords RCMP responded to 43 calls for service over from Thursday, Sept. 7, 6 a.m. to Friday, Sept. 8, 6 a.m., including but not limited to the following: 2:38 p.m. Police called to a business located in the Resort Village of Cochin. A 20-year-old male was chasing another male around with a machete.

Both individuals were gone on police arrival. The sus-

One MLA Cheveldayoff is still trying to convince is Battlefords MLA Herb Cox. Cox was at the North Battleford event where he introduced Cheveldayoff, but he told the News-Optimist he was there as a caucus colleague and was not yet officially endorsing any candidate.

Nevertheless, Cox had good things to say about Cheveldayoff in his remarks, thanking him for coming to the Battlefords to help his campaign in the 2011 election.

“Whenever there’s something that needs to be done, Ken was there lending a hand to do it,” said Cox to supporters.

As for the leadership race going forward, Cheveldayoff said he would be running a policy-oriented campaign. He told the News-Optimist his priorities will focus on economic development and more jobs, so that there would be resources the government could put into health care, education, and social services.

He said the province needs to be ready when the

economy returns to create jobs in Saskatchewan.

“People are going to be making decisions across the country. Do they invest in Saskatchewan, do they invest in Alberta, do they invest in Manitoba? I want to make it very easy for them to say ‘invest in Saskatchewan,’” he said.

He gave some indication of some of his policies on Wednesday night. He told the audience he would make a major policy announcement the following day in which he would call for the PST to be removed from insurance premiums – a reversal of a decision in the provincial budget this past spring.

Cheveldayoff also spoke about the Global Transportation Hub, acknowledging “mistakes were made.” As for the future, he supported divesting the government’s portion of the GTH. When asked if that sounded a lot like what Jeremy Harrison had been proposing, Cheveldayoff says “not really – you know, there are some similarities there.”

the mistakes that have been made, admit the mistakes that have been made,” said Cheveldayoff. “But more importantly demonstrate to the Saskatchewan people that we can sell that asset, that they wouldn’t have lost a dime on it, and put it in the private sector. I think it will be better run in the private sector.”

As for Gord Wyant’s recent proposal of a public inquiry into the GTH, Cheveldayoff said he would not rule it out.

“At some point we have to clear the air,” he said.

Another major part of Cheveldayoff’s efforts will be a “listening tour” around the province.

Cheveldayoff said it would start on the topics of small business and entrepreneurship, and groups from across the spectrum will be invited to come and present their ideas.

“That’s what this leadership campaign is all about, is about listening and then about articulating their ideas in the end, and providing a vision for Saskatchewan people,” said Cheveldayoff. “I’m very confident that I’ll have one that they’ll get behind and be part of.”

Taxes – not housing and basic necessities – are largest Canadian household expense Given the following, is it any wonder Canadians are calling for tax relief? – News-Optimist VANCOUVER—Despite high housing costs across the country, the average Canadian family spent more on taxes in 2016 than housing, food and clothing combined, finds a new study released today by the Fraser Institute, an independent, non-partisan Canadian public policy think-tank.

“Many Canadians may think housing is their biggest household expense, but in fact the average Canadian family spent more on taxes last year than on life’s basic necessities—including housing,” said Charles Lammam, director of fiscal studies at the Fraser Institute and co-author of the Canadian Consumer Tax Index, which tracks the total tax bill of the average Canadian family from 1961 to 2016.

Last year, the average Canadian family earned $83,105 and paid $35,283 in total taxes compared to $31,069 on housing (including rent and mortgage payments), food and clothing combined.

In fact, the average Canadian family paid nearly twice as much of their income in taxes (42.5 per cent) as they did for housing (22.1 per cent). The basic necessities of life, which include food, clothing and housing, amounted to just 37.4 per cent of income—still less than the percentage of income going to taxes.

This represents a marked shift since 1961, when the average Canadian family spent much less on taxes (33.5 per cent) than on food, clothing and housing (56.5 per cent).

The total tax bill reflects both visible and hidden taxes that families pay to the federal, provincial and local governments including income, payroll, sales, property, carbon, health, fuel and alcohol taxes and more.

Since 1961, the average Canadian family’s total tax bill has increased by a staggering 2,006 per cent, dwarfing in-

creases in annual housing costs (1,527 per cent), clothing (677 per cent), and food (639 per cent).

Even after accounting for inflation, the tax bill has still increased 157.6 per cent over this period.

“Taxes help fund important public services that Canadians rely on, but the issue is the amount of taxes governments take compared to what Canadians get in return,” Lammam said.

“With more than 42 per cent of their income going to taxes, Canadians might ask whether they’re getting good value for their tax dollars.”

Wawanesa donates $5,000 for gazebo

Battlefords Trade and Education Centre Inc. have accepted a donation for a much needed gazebo at their new building.

BTEC received a donation of $5,000 from Wawanesa Insurance recently.

Wawanesa senior business development representative Darlene Nadeau is seen along with executive director Mona Leece and Gerry Caron of Battlefords Residential Services Inc. at the cheque presentation Thursday.

“Wawanesa Insurance likes to support our local broker offices in the communities that they are located in,” said Nadeau of the BTEC donation. “We are happy to donate $5,000 towards that cause.”

The gazebo will be much welcomed by those BTEC clients who would like to enjoy the outdoors, but who are on medications and need to have a place where they can remain in the shade.

Wawanesa Insurance provided a $5,000 donation that paid for a new gazebo on the site of the new Battlefords Trade and Education Centre, Inc. building.

Youth Services built the gazebo and construction took place over the last month and a half, with the structure finally finished in the past week.

“This was a much needed fixture for our new building,” said Leece. She

says a lot of the clients will take their lunch to the gazebo and eat it there.

The cheque presentation took place on the same day that about 25 staff of Notre Dame School were on hand volunteering for the day at BTEC. They were helping

serve food, painting, taking clients for walks, and doing other activities.

Allan Senger, principal of Notre Dame, said it was their way of giving back to the community.

“Our theme for our school division is ‘serve,’”

said Senger, and this was the venue they chose.

He noted the BTEC clients were very happy to

see their volunteers help out. “They seem very enthused that we’re here, and it’s good to see.”

Hit and run in downtown alley caught on camera Staff It was inevitable that extra traffic in a downtown alley due to construction on downtown streets would result in property damage, if not injury.

Battleford RCMP are investigating a reported hit and run which occurred in the back alley on the 1100 block between 101st and 100th Street on the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 6.

Surveillance footage in the area shows a suburban striking a parked car with significant force causing damage to the passenger side. The suburban stops briefly before fleeing the scene.

A male parked in another vehicle in the lot appears to have attempted to approach the driver after the collision, and police would also like for this person to come forward with any in-

formation they may have.

Fire on 105th Street results in $150,000 damage Staff The North Battleford Fire Department was on the scene at a residential structure fire on Wednesday night.

The fire was reported shortly before 9:10 p.m. on the 900 block of 105th Street.

Three engines, one chief unit and 12 firefighters were on the scene, according to the fire department’s news release.

According to the fire department, fire crews found the house fully involved on arrival. They were able to do a quick knock down to gain access to the structure to do a search. Fortunately, the occupants had evacuated the property and were later located.

North Stars wrap up pre-season on winning note

The long and winding road that was the Battlefords North Stars 2017 pre-season ended on a high Sunday in Saskatoon.

In what was their seventh game in eight days, the defending Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League champions picked up a dramatic 4-3 overtime win over the Yorkton Terriers at the Rutherford Arena to finish off their pre-season with a 4-3 record.

“It was a long process but I learned a lot from it,” North Stars general manager and head coach Brandon Heck said. “I saw the high character from the guys, especially tonight [Sunday] against Yorkton when were banged up but we were able to get the win.

“There were lots of good signs over the last week but it will be nice to get some practices in and have a chance to clean up some of the details in our team game.”

Sunday’s contest saw an interesting finish as North Stars defenceman Connor Jensen made a wraparound play just 31 seconds into the extra frame that appeared to be stopped by Terriers netminder Logan Bateman.

the North Stars skated away with the win.

“There were about five guys on the bench that were yelling that the puck had gone in but I couldn’t see anything from my vantage point,” Heck said. “I just assumed that their goalie had maybe pulled it out but they all knew where the puck was, so it was kind of funny when they called it.

“The first thing I thought of when they ruled it had gone was of Patrick Kane’s Stanley Cup winner in 2010 [for the Chicago Blackhawks]. Obviously it was scored in a different way but it was a similar scenario where no one knew what had happened.”

Jensen also scored the game-tying goal on a third

period power play as he banged home a rebound from a shot on goal by MacGregor Sinclair.

Troy Gerein and Keith Anderson also found the back of the net for the North Stars, who split goaltending duties between Taryn Kotchorek and Kolby Matthews.

The Terriers were led on offence by a two-goal performance from Jordan Hudson, while Shane Sherban also lit the lamp.

Logan Bateman played the entire game in goal and was saddled with the loss.

“We had a few regulars sitting out but I felt like this was a really good test for the younger guys,” Terriers head coach and general manager Casey O’Brien

said.

“It was a really competitive game and it’s always been like that whenever Yorkton and the Battlefords play each other. I expect more of the same between us this year.”

Sunday’s win was a nice bounce-back for the North Stars after they dropped a 6-3 decision to the Kindersley Klippers at the West Central Events Centre.

Layne Young scored twice in the loss, with the team’s other goal coming from Connor Manegre.

Cody Hodgson was impressive for the home team as he put up a hat trick and

had two assists.

Jordan Funk scored twice for the Klippers and Tanner Thompson also found the back of the net.

The previous meeting between the two sides Friday at the Civic Centre saw a polar opposite result as the North Stars cruised to a 7-1 win over their rivals.

Young had another twogoal performance in the win, which also saw lamplighters from Gerein, Blake Fennig, Jacob Tibbats, Jayden Nachtegaele and Owen Lamb.

Nick Malencia had the only goal for the Klippers.

With the pre-season now in the books, Heck and assistant coach Boyd Wakelin will now determine who will make the

team’s 25-man squad as they currently have 29 players on the roster.

That includes newly acquired forward Matthias Urbanski, defenceman Michael Sande and goaltender Kolby Matthews who have joined the team over the course of the last week.

“We’re going to watch some film before we overreact after a game,” Heck said. “We’re going to take some time to think things over.

“I think opening night will be the best case scenario to have our roster set in stone.”

While the North Stars will introduce many of their players at their kickoff breakfast at the Civic Centre Thursday morning, their title defence will officially begin Friday when they’ll visit the Klippers for a 7:30 p.m. tilt.

The two sides will play again Saturday in North Battleford at 7:30 p.m., which will see the 2017 Canalta Cup banner presented to the team.

“I’m sure the players will be fired up to face their biggest rival right away,” Heck said. “I may not have that feeling quite yet, but I’m sure that will change.

“Through the opening weekend and our first few games there’s going to be a huge level of excitement.

I don’t think it matters if it was Kindersley or anyone else. You’ll be fired up.”

Vikings win season opener

A pre-season tune-up may have been what the doctor ordered for the North Battleford Comprehensive High School Vikings senior football team.

Coming off of a loss in a high-scoring 43-36 game in Lloydminster to the host Lloydminster Comprehensive Barons a week earlier, the Vikings started off their Saskatoon Secondary Schools Athletic Directorate season on a winning note Friday afternoon with a 56-20 romp over the Evan Hardy Souls in Saskatoon.

“I was really happy with how physically the guys played on both sides of the ball,” Vikings head coach Mike Humenny said. “I thought we were a lot sharper on offence compared to how we played in Lloydminster, especially in the first half.

“I thought we would be a little bit more engaged earlier on defence, but once we got rolling we played

really well. You have to give credit to Evan Hardy, as they have a number of high skilled players on offence that forced us to adjust to their speed early.”

Helping the Vikings out was a strong three-headed monster on offence with quarterback Damon Dutton, running back JT Lamb and all-around weapon Zach Wolfe.

“Damon’s awesome all the time back there, but I think that was probably his best game as a starter for us, as he was 15-for18 passing for 289 yards and three touchdowns,” Humenny said.

“JT was a beast all game as he ran the ball 18 times for 188 yards and Damon did a number of different things for us all game, including lining up in the backfield a few times.”

While the Vikings offence did their thing, the defence also played their part in helping to slow down the Souls as the afternoon wore on.

“Kolby Heidt didn’t play

for us last week in Lloydminster but he was all over the field making place on defence and special teams,” Humenny said.

“As the game wore on, Zack Weber became a monster for us. He was in their backfield all day long and just crushing guys.”

The Vikings will look to continue their success on the road this Friday at 4:30 p.m., as they’ll take on a Warman Wolverines side that will playing their first home game in the 12-man league after dominating the nine-man scene provincially.

“They were on the wrong end of a lopsided score against Bishop J Mahoney, but they are a team that will get better each week,” Humenny said.

“Judging by the film we have on them, they are a well-coached team with a number of good athletes, especially on defence as they just fly around the field.

“We’re not planning to make any major adjustments. As I’ve said before, our making focus is to get better with the fundamentals each week, and that’s what we will focus on during out three practices.”

Although his team suffered an 18-7 loss to the Kindersley Kobras in their home opener Friday, there were a lot of positives that John Paul II Crusaders head coach Bruce Yockey could take out of his team’s showing at Crusader Field.

“I was really happy with how the defence played as it would have been scoreless at halftime if it wasn’t for an interception we threw,” Yockey said. “We just needed to get them off the field more often than we did, but we were really struggling on offence.

“The biggest thing was that weren’t ready to play a regular season yet, especially with a younger team.

it’s really tough for them to get used to some of the adjustments that comes with playing at this level, especially with the timing on offence. As the season goes on though, I think you will see that come around for us.”

The Crusaders actually took the lead with 9:16 to go when running back Decklan Wychopen scooped up a loose ball and ran into the endzone from 31 yards out.

That momentum would soon switch back in the Kobras favour following a blocked punt that led to a nine-yard touchdown for quarterback Hudson Baum.

“Decklan’s one of those guys that darts around quickly when he has an open field in front of him,” Yockey said. “He’ll mature quickly out there and I think you’ll see the improvements in his game going forward.

“The guys weren’t afraid out there, especially on defence. Hunter Priddle had two picks and he just about had one more in the second half. Latral Foulston was playing at linebacker for us and he had a really strong game for a Grade 9 player.”

The Cobras used the

ground game for all three of their touchdowns, as Tristan Benson and Dylan Schmidt also ran across the goal line.

“That game was certainly one for the people who like defence as both teams stepped up on that side of the ball,” Cobras head coach Tavis Lehman said.

“That first game of the year came up on us quick and we could have used some more time to get the offence put together, but we have a good core of veteran players that really helped us get on track.”

The Crusaders will look to get their first win of the season this Friday afternoon, as they’ll pay a visit to the Martensville Royals.

“It’ll be good to have some video for the guys to watch as they’ll have a chance to see some of the mistakes that they can easily correct,” Yockey said.

“It’s going to be another tough game. Martensville loves to pound the ball with their running game so it’ll be another good test for our young guys in the early part of the season.”

The next home game for the Crusaders is slated for Thursday, Sept. 28 when Meadow Lake will come to Crusader Field.

Community gardens about more than growing Submitted by Battlefords Family Health Centre Community Garden Project 2017 As the days are getting shorter, we bring out our sweaters in the morning as we head to the gardens.

Harvest and blanching vegetables for the winter months has begun. It is great to look in the fridge and see the abundance of fresh, delicious food options at our fingertips. It makes meal planning and cooking exciting and fun.

In 2017, our garden project involved two classrooms from Connaught Elementary School, Me to We students from Battleford Central School, four groups of summer literacy students from McKitrick School and Battleford Central School and students from the special ed class at North Battleford Comprehensive High School.

With these students, our project staff incorporated many land-based learning strategies – three sisters planting using the fourdirection method, incorporating Cree language words and phrases on site signage, planting of traditional tobacco, adding ad-

ditional plants to the healing garden, and developing a “Project of Heart Garden” to honour residential school survivors.

The garden project provided staff with the opportunity to pick traditional berries, pick sweet grass and to attend a sweat. Garden staff was involved in planting a medicine wheel and tipi flower gardens.

On site events included local and regional guest speakers on a variety of topics and hands on learning such as rock painting, basket making, and learning about arrowheads.

The project also supported food security issues by supporting The Lighthouse Homeless Shelter participants, Friendship Centre and Friendship Centre Housing First initiative, Kids First, Catholic Family Services, Prairie North Health Region Mental Health Day Treatment Program, North Town Food Ministries, Mental Health Group Home participants and immigrant families.

We had four cherry trees donated by four mystery youth – who we were told sold lemonade to raise money for the cherry trees, which they in turn came and planted, watered and

nurtured at the Battleford garden location.

This year, our in-kind and new partnerships grew.

By growing partnerships this allows the community a better understanding about the community garden project and that it is more than just growing a garden. By having previous partners/donors provide repeat support this shows us that they continue to see the benefits that such a project delivers to the community and the people in it.

Besides addressing physical activity, diabetes prevention, access to healthy foods and opportunities for learning how to grow our own foods, participants supplement their budgets with produce they might not normally purchase because of the cost.

The gardens have turned run down lots into green spaces and provided habitat for birds, animals, insects etc. The garden project offered dedicated outreach workers who continue to work to improve the gardens and green spaces that have been created. Garden outreach staff were also responsible to plan, prepare and deliver weekly events that brought garden participants together for a free meal and fun activity.

SOLONINKO: It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Soloninko on August 21, 2017. John was born at Kamsack, SK. on April 22, 1935. He attended Poplar point school in the Togo, SK. area.

He left school after completing his Grade Ten education to help his father on the farm. In the winters he was employed by a seismic drilling company in Alberta. In the spring after the seismic drilling had finished for the summer John went back home to help on the farm. In 1962 John began his career with Elk Point Drilling, a water well drilling company out of Alberta. John was a long time friend & partner of the Sask. office of Elk Point Drilling, opening the Sask. office in 1967. He was an exceptional water-well driller and was well known for his knowledge of water bearing formations throughout Sask. John loved his work & loved going to work even after he could not longer go out into the field. John is survived by his beloved wife Barbara of 56 years, his sister Sonia (Norm) Ethier, Gimli, MB, Elizabeth Renz, Shellbrook, SK., Catherine (Ron) Stanners Okatoks, AB. and number of neices & nephews and many friends. Storing the harvest Many of us have been enjoying the fruits of our labours in the garden!

However, if your garden is like mine and you cannot consume all that is offered, then it is time to begin to put some of the harvest away for later. Enjoy the following article on how to store your harvest.

As with any type of storage, it is important to ensure that anything you are putting away is of good quality. Be careful when harvesting your produce to not break, nick or bruise what you are picking. Compost or consume quickly any product which is not in the optimum shape for storage.

Different vegetables require different storage conditions. If we are storing crops which are not being processed, then temperature and relative humidity (RH) are the main considerations of storage.

There are three basic types of storage. Cold and dry (0 to 5 C and 65% RH); cool/ cold and moist (0 to 10C with 95% RH); and warm and dry (10 C and 60% RH).

Please note that these are optimal conditions for storage and any temperatures or humidity that are different than these optimal conditions then your

shelf life will shorten.

Our basements are generally cool and dry during our colder months and our home refrigerators can be considered cold and dry.

Putting vegetables in perforated plastic bags will give a good short-term storage option for those that require cold and moist conditions. If you are lucky enough to have a root cellar, then you can likely easily store potatoes for the entire winter and beyond.

Do note that any type of storage does need to provide ventilation as the vegetables are still respiring.

Any storage facility should be cleaned prior to storing any products and should be free of any potential rodent infestations.

For an example of how to store some of what you may be harvesting, then do read on. Apples store best in the dark at a temperature just above freezing.

A covering of perforated poly will help to prevent shrivelling. As apples exude ethylene gas ensure you do not store them with leafy green or cole crops as those crops are damaged by exposure to ethylene.

Saskatoon School of Horticulture conditions with good ventilation. Ensure that these crops go into storage when they have dried thoroughly. Beets, parsnips, carrots, cabbage, beans, peppers and rutabagas will lose moisture readily so cover them with perforated poly.

They do well at the bottom end of the range at 0 to 5C. Potatoes will keep the best quality if they are stored at about 4 C when mature.

Tomatoes like to be stored a bit warmer at about 10 to 15C. All of these vegetables should be stored in the dark.

Peppers, pumpkins, squash and sweet potatoes should be stored in warm, dry conditions Garlic and onions prefer cold and dry storage conditions. If you happen to be harvesting seed for next year, most seed will store best if it has matured appropriately, cleaned and then stores in cold, dry conditions.

For any produce that you are processing, it is necessary to blanch them

prior to freezing. This blanching process means that you plunge the vegetables into boiling water - for just a tiny bit of time and then immediately immerse in an ice bath. Different produce uses specific guidelines for the blanching time. Blanching will stop the life of the produce which means that respiration has stopped and following this process will ensure you keep the maximum amount of colour and nutrition.

It might cramp your style, but it will allow you to cut costs and free up some money for investing and savings. This is a shortterm arrangement that can help you save thousands.

Do you have a mortgage? A car loan? And if so, do you have a plan to pay it off quickly? If you become ill or disabled, will you be able to continue living where you are, in the style you’re used to?

You definitely need to create an emergency fund worth three months of monthly expenses. It might seem impossible, but it’s not. Set up that automatic deposit method I mentioned earlier, and start putting money into a TaxFree Savings Account to cover you against the unexpected. Purchase some disability insurance. As a single person, you rely solely on yourself for income, and if you were to be injured or in an accident, you could be faced with expenses you cannot afford.

Maximize any employee benefits you may be entitled to (major medical, dental, and prescription drugs, for example), and integrate those with carefully selected insurance products to ensure you’re fully protected in the mostcost-effective manner possible. Check with your employer to see if they have disability coverage for you, and if not, get some.

Get a plan! Stick to it!

Now, every financial

blogger, journalist, and planning expert will tell you that you first need to create a financial plan. But that’s one of those obvious bits of “advice” that hardly anyone follows. It’s not hard to see why. Some of the advice you read makes personal financial planning seem like an exercise in a Level III CFA program. But not all of us care deeply about income statements, balance sheets, and debt-equity ratios. So, put off by the daunting prospect of all those debits and credits and assets and liabilities, many singles sadly never consider financial housekeeping until it’s almost too late. Then they find themselves with maxed out credit cards, collection agencies calling, and credit rating at risk.

It doesn’t have to be this way. If you’re not cut out for do-it-yourself financial management, there’s still hope! A financial planner can help you with budgeting and cash flow, saving and investing, and risk management, including a professional analysis of your insurance and healthcare needs. Look for a “fee-for-service” Certified Financial Planner (that is, someone with the “CFP” designation) in your area who specializes in small accounts. Ask friends for recommendations or referrals. Often, you’ll find fully certified planners at your local bank. Sometimes your employer will offer financial planning services as a benefit. Always take advantage of these!

Joining with the angels in a heavenly activity Composer Felix Mendelssohn, a dedicated Christian, wrote a beautiful melody he called in German Auf Flügeln des Gesanges, meaning On Wings of Song.

Though written for the words of a secular love song, there’s a sense in which that phrase says something about the hymns of the church.

When they serve their highest purpose, they bear the truths of Scripture on musical wings into the hearts and minds of the participants and hearers.

They also lift our praises up to God on wings of sacred song.

We can sing these songs on our own, or in family gatherings, but hymn singing is also to be a major activity in the services of the local church.

We’re told in the Word of God to “Sing out the honour of His name; make His praise glorious” (Ps. 66:2), and to “serve the Lord with gladness; [and] come before His presence with singing” (Ps. 100:2). We’re to teach and admonish one another with our songs, as well as singing to the Lord (Col. 3:16).

Notice the call, in Psalm 66:2 to “make His praise glorious.” The Hebrew word for glorious (kabod) describes something of great splendour, something that is abundant, rich, and reverent,

befitting our glorious God. There’s a gospel song that says, “Love so mighty and so true / Merits my soul’s best songs.” Our glorious Lord is infinitely worthy of the best of our songs, sung to the best of our ability.

By these songs we pass on truth from one generation to the next. This is why I believe it is important to teach the great hymns to our children, early on. The psalmist pledges, “I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever; with my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations” (Ps. 89:1). Our songs can also be a witness to the unbelieving world. David says, “I will praise You, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing to You among the nations” (Ps. 57:9).

Anglican bishop, J. C. Ryle (1816-1900) said, “Good hymns are an immense blessing to the church of Christ. I believe the last day alone will show the world the real amount of good they have done. They suit all, both rich and poor. There is an elevating, stirring, soothing, spiritualizing, effect about a thoroughly good hymn, which nothing else can produce. It sticks in [the memory] when texts are forgotten. It trains [us] for heaven, where praise is one of the principal occupations. Preaching

and praying shall one day cease forever; but praise shall never die.”

We know that singing God’s praises predates the creation of the present world, because the angels sang when it came to

be. The Lord asked Job, “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth... when the morning stars sang together?”

– “morning stars” being poetic imagery for angels in the passage (Job 38:4,

7). We are also told that the angels, as well as the saints, will continue to sing songs of worship in the eternal heavenly kingdom (Rev. 5:8-10).

Francis Pott (18321909) was an English clergyman. He also wrote some hymns, translated those of others, and served as a hymn book editor.

One of his own hymns speaks of how we are privileged to share with the angels the joy of praising God in song.

“Angel voices, ever singing, / Round Thy throne of light, / Angel

Lilies for the prairies With a frost warning last Monday night, perhaps it’s time to admit that summer is nearly over. Doesn’t mean that the gardening season is done for the year. I’m hopeful that we have several weeks of great weather still ahead of us. One thing we can do is start preparing for next year by planting lilies in the next couple of weeks. Margaret Driver sorts us out when it comes to the different kinds of prairie-hardy lilies and tried-and-true cultivars. – Erl Svendsen

By Margaret Driver Most of the lilies grown in prairie gardens are hybrids of Asiatic species.

Their ancestors originated in Asia in a climate very similar to ours. They can vary in height from 10 inches to four feet and come in a generous range of colours, blooming variously from June to late August.

The LongiflorumAsiatic (LA) hybrids have similar characteristics to the Asiatics, but are sturdier, bloom more profusely, and are altogether showier.

They can be more prone to colour-breaking virus especially the purple-red varieties. These have been are primarily hybridized in Holland where disease resistance is not high on the list of breeding goals. All are up-facing.

Martagon lilies have very good disease-resistance and tolerate a wide range of conditions. They should be well watered when planted and given another good watering each spring and occasionally in summer during prolonged dry conditions.

Otherwise, they require very little additional water, actually preferring being kept on the dry side. Their down-facing blooms are dainty, recurved and often described as turkscaps.

Blooming begins during the last week in June and some have as many as 50 flowers per stem. They are

best placed in a semi-shady spot.

The best time to plant lilies is mid- to late-September. Choose a site that is well drained and where they will receive at least 6 hours sun per day. Heavy soils should be amended with fibrous materials such as coarse peat moss.

Sharp sand, washed gravel or crushed gravel can be added to beds as well to improve drainage. Lighter soils can be amended with compost or other organic material to improve water holding capacity. However, do not plant bulbs in close contact with rotted manure.

For xeriscape gardens, Asiatics and martagons are usually the best bet, but a number of LA hybrids will perform well too.

Plant in small groups of three or five bulbs, spaced 20 to 25 cm (8 to 10 in.) apart. In light soils, final planting depth should be 3 times as deep as the bulb’s diameter (= 5-6 inches deep); in heavier soils, twice the depth as its diameter (= 4-5 inches). To start, dig the hole 2 inches deeper than required, sprinkle a couple of tablespoons of general lawn fertilizer (e.g.

16-20-0 or 11-52-0) in the bottom, add back 2 inches of soil, then set the bulb in the bottom and cover with soil. Water well. During the first winter, cover with mulch to add an extra layer of protection.
