Following all-candidates forums in Unity and Lloydminster last week, the major candidates in BattlefordsLloydminster were back on the campaign trail meeting the electorate and looking for votes.

Two campaign events took place Thursday in the Battlefords. The first was a morning event at the NDP campaign office of Glenn Tait, which officially opened at the corner of 12th Avenue and 98th Street, North Battleford.

The candidate was there along with a number of NDP volunteers and supporters

from the riding. Also on display was food, much of which was coloured in NDP orange, including carrots, oranges, melon and other fruit.

Tait cut the cake for the grand opening. Not surprisingly, it was carrot cake.

The plan is for the office to house the NDP campaign activities in the riding through election day. The tentative plans are to watch the election results from that location.

The NDP campaign has been active in putting up signs, with a number of them spotted along Highway 16 between the Battlefords and Lloydminster.

In speaking to reporters Wednesday night in Lloyd-

minster, Tait said his campaign seemed to be going well. He planned to attend a number of events before election day, where he could meet as many people as possible.

But Tait admitted it was a struggle to juggle his harvest activities with campaigning.

“I wish I could be in 10 places at once. I just can’t be,” said Tait. “There’s about 80,000 people in this riding to talk to. I would love to do it, I love talking to people one-on-one.”

confidence about the Conservatives’ prospects in the election Oct. 19.

“I think there will be some surprises on election night, much to the chagrin of some people who’ve touted our funeral,” said Ritz.

“I feel confident, I feel good. I mean, I’m not ready to predict a majority or anything like that. I think there’s a lot more recognition out there from real people on the street that the economy is in good shape, leadership is solid, and we need to carry on what we’re doing.”

But Liberal candidate Larry Ingram was also expressing confidence about Liberal chances after the Lloydminster forum.

“We’re doing awesome nationally, aren’t we?” said Ingram, who believed the New Democrats were in big trouble.

pense account, they’ve really set themselves up for a disaster, and that makes it so that people are telling me ‘anybody but Conservative,’ they’re definitely voting Liberal.”

The “ABC” movement was a real one, said Ingram.

“When I’m out knocking on doors … this is what people tell me. Especially anybody raising their family, anybody affected by this oil industry drop —‘anybody but Conservative.’”

Independent Doug Anguish has also been campaigning and attending election forums. He now has a campaign office open on 100th Street and a number of his signs have been going up.

After the Lloydminster forum Anguish said his plan was to “go around and get as many votes and exposure as I can,” and get the word out about his independent run.

They heard a speech from Ritz, and that was followed by an extensive question and answer session in which the mainly partisan audience posed questions on familiar topics that included the Syrian refugee issue, the niqab issue, pipelines, the Senate and other issues.

He roasted Liberal leader Justin Trudeau in his speech over his now infamous remarks praising the dictatorship of China.

“For him to say that’s what we want to emulate, that scares me a little bit.”

“That became the moniker then, ‘he’s just not ready.’

And I was talking to a farmer the other day and I said, ‘I see you’ve still got your canola out,’ and he said, ‘Yeah, it’s the Trudeau variety, just not ready,’” said Ritz to laughs from the audience.

Residents’ call for changes heeded by town council

The 35th Street curve coming up from the Flats in Battleford has sometimes been overshot by speeding vehicles in the area of 3rd Avenue and Riverbend Crescent, causing damage to properties adjacent and concern among residents for their safety.

Letters to Town Hall from Brian and Janet Nehring and from Victor and Kanndece Quijada-Sawitsky have resulted in some changes made by the Town of Battleford, including the moving of existing signs and the erection of additional signs, including a flashing amber light.

While residents had called for a barrier to be constructed, the Town found it had to rule that option out due to liability issues.

At Monday’s council meeting, in filling in the councillors about the improvements, Mayor Derek Mahon said he would also like to see new lines painted in the spring. There is one area, he said, where the width of the pavement may be misleading as to where the traffic is supposed to go. But moving some chevron signs away from the bushes along the side of the road closer to the traffic lane has helped.

A curve sign that has been installed includes solar-powered flashing amber bulbs. Council is hoping no nearby residents have complaints about the flashing light.

Councillor Shelley Boutin-Gervais also suggested the Town look at installing a rumble strip along the outside of the traffic area like the ones found on the highway. That will be investigated, said Town Administrator Sheryl Ballendine.

Ballendine also said the residents involved have been sent a letter about the changes. Most recently, town council had received a letter from the Nehrings Sept.

21 asking for a response to the letter they sent in the spring.

In the last five years, there have been three alcohol-related incidents in which speeding vehicles have crashed into the Nehrings’ yard. The two most recent incidents, Oct. 30, 2014 and Jan. 30 of this year combined to destroy the Nehrings’ front yard landscaping, fencing and a boat and motor and damage their vehicle and house.

The collision Oct. 30, 2014 also affected the Quijada-Sawitsky property when it destroyed shrubs and uprooted a 15-foot pine tree before coming to a stop in their front yard within 10 feet of hitting the house. That was after it had already passed through the Nehring’s yard.

Cowboys to team up with animal shelter

A parade held annually in the fall or early winter in Battleford has gone through more than one transformation – from a Christmas theme to a harvest theme and from a November time frame to October. But it has always been the project of the Battlefords Quarter Horse Club.

This year, the club is partnering with the Battlefords Humane Society and it’s become a Halloween event, says Heather Hall, humane society board member, in a letter to Battleford

town councillors received Monday.

This year’s parade will be called the Hooves ‘n Paws Halloween Parade and will be raising funds for the Shelter Us Building Fund. The Humane Society is working toward funding a new shelter building to replace the aging structure now being used.

The date of the parade will be Halloween day, which is Saturday, Oct. 31.

The parade is to commence at 1 p.m. and is expected to last about an hour.

The route will run from Fort Battleford, down Cen-

tral Avenue to 22nd Street, west on 22nd Street to the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum where it will do a U-turn, back up 22nd Street to Central Avenue, returning to the original form up area at the Fort.

Form up will be in the field across from the Fort, unless it is raining, in which case the form up will take place along the roadway.

If the weather is nice, organizers would like to hold a barbecue after the parade as well. Sponsorship for a barbecue is presently being sought. They will be asking Friends of the Fort for use

Playground considered for Battleford West Staff The Town of Battleford will be looking at building another children’s playground in the budget process for next year.

At last week’s town council meeting, a letter from the developer of Battleford West, Dean Kupchanko, asked the councillors to give consideration to supply and install a children’s playground in the municipal reserve area of the subdivision.

His letter stated, “Now that there is a community of houses in Telegraph Heights and new affordable housing going up in Heritage Court there is a population of children residing in the area.

Some of the residents were considering assembling a

petition for a playground, but asked if I would approach council first, hence this letter.”

The letter concluded, “Children are playing on the street and residents are concerned about their safety.”

The municipal reserve area where the playground is proposed is between Heritage Court and Parker Court.

Councillors noted the development agreement with Kupchanko does not call for the developer to build a playground, however the town does collect an off-site services fee that can include the cost of such projects.

The request has been referred for consideriations during the next budget process.

Monday, upon reviewing the minutes of a recent Battleford and District Parks and Recreation Board meeting, councillors noted the

board would like to see the Friends of the Fort set up a beer garden and open the washrooms in the information centre, as they did the first two years the parade form up was moved to that area.

“Otherwise, there seems to be no point in having it start and end there,” stated the minutes.

Do Canadians pay too much in taxes?

Here’s why that’s the wrong question to ask

By Michael C. Wolfson A recent Fraser Institute report and commentary stated taxes are the single largest budget item of Canadian households. “Your family’s largest expense may surprise you,” the think tank wrote alarmingly, with taxes as the punch line.

Of course, if you divide all household expenditures into a number of different categories like food and transportation, but leave all the different levels and types of taxation lumped together in a single category, the Fraser Institute’s finding is neither false nor surprising. If, instead, you lump all of Canadians’ (non-tax) spending together, the resulting discretionary amount is a larger portion of household budgets than the taxes the Fraser Institute claims we pay.

But there is more obfuscation in its figures. On the one hand, the Fraser Institute assigns the taxes paid by corporations to individuals and families, but they don’t assign the corresponding corporate profits to anyone. This inconsistency inflates its tax rate numbers.

Let’s tackle the issue another way. If we examine Canada’s entire economy, the OECD pegs total taxes, including CPP and EI contributions, at about 31 per cent of the gross domestic product rather than the Fraser Institute’s figure of 44 per cent.

And let’s not forget governments in Canada actually account for about 20 per cent of GDP if we focus on their direct purchases - from teachers’ salaries to hospitals to roads and public libraries. Providing these kinds of public goods is why we have governments in the first place.

Most of the rest of the economy’s taxes flow back to individuals and families as cash, ranging from child tax benefits to public pensions, forms of redistribution and social insurance fundamental to Canada’s social fabric.

But there may be a silver lining. Such economic exercises as that undertaken by the Fraser Institute raise a fundamental question: Just what indicators should we be using to keep score on Canada’s economic performance?

In the 1990s, a cover story for the Atlantic Monthly was titled, “If the economy is up, why is everyone down?” reflecting a widespread feeling that the most commonly used scorecard for the economy, GDP, was misleading.

In 2009, then French president Nicholas Sarkozy, frustrated with the focus on GDP, funded a group of Nobel laureates and internationally prominent economists to see whether there was a better economic scorecard. Their answer, in the area of incomes, was to focus on median family income — the income level that separates families into two equal sized groups when arrayed by income.

For Canada, the trends in this measure of economic performance do not jibe with GDP per capita, nor with the family income figure used by the Fraser Institute. In 1997, median Canadian family after-tax income (in constant 2014 dollars) for a four-person family was about $64,000, just a few hundred dollars higher than it was in 1976. Over this same period, GDP per capita had grown by about 20 per cent.

After this period of stagnation, there was a clear turning point in 1997, with median family income (again using a four-person family as the point of reference) growing quite steadily, reaching just over $85,000 in 2013. This figure reflects real growth of 33 per cent, faster than the roughly 26 per cent growth in real GDP per capita over the same period.

We have, then, three very different impressions of Canada’s economic performance: the Fraser Institute’s implausibly high average tax rates, with the implication that Canadians are losing close to half their income to taxes; the mainstream financial press’s focus on short term wiggles in the GDP stats; with politicians trying to score points on

who is to blame or reward for particular wiggles in GDP. But far less effort is devoted to producing and trying to understand data on how actual Canadian families are doing.

We need to make more use of modern kinds of “big data” to estimate median family income and related indicators like the prevalence of low income, the size of the middle class, the share of the top one per cent and income inequality. Such information would help paint a truer portrait of Canadian household prosperity — both improvements and declines — across the country.

It’s time we stopped buying biased and second-rate economic indicators and took a thoughtful look at how Canadians are really doing.

Kramer Campground

New service centre under construction

The Eiling Kramer Campground is closed for the season, but there is still activity going on.

A new service centre shower house is being built to replace the one that visitors describe as clean but dated.

Lesmeister Construction has begun work on the building after being awarded the contract for $332,000 at the Sept. 21 meeting of town council. An additional $61,000 is being spent on design and engineering by Associated Engineering. This includes, however, $25,000 that was allocated to a project at the Battleford Arena.

Oct. 5, upon receiving the year end report from campground manager Joe Mills, council members asked administration to look into the cost of increasing the number of full service sites, as the public is looking for those kinds of sites and some campers went elsewhere because there weren’t any available. Only five of the sites are full service at present, offering water, sewer and electrical.

There are also 74 electrified sites, separate tenting and picnic areas with an

enclosed shelter that is available to rent.

“Considering we have only five full service sites, the feasibility to open another area and tripling these sites could be considered in the future,” wrote Mills in his report. “An expansion in full service sites would greatly increase revenue.”

This year’s revenue at the Kramer campground was $106,000.97. A total of 1,121 campers were registered.

“Campers’ comments were positive,” said Mills.

“They cited cleanliness of the washrooms (although dated), campsite care, lawn care, large trees and open areas. They cited the staff as friendly, helpful and positive. Many registered campers were appreciative of the free showers and could not believe a free bundle of firewood each night, as compared to other campgrounds.

This year we had a number of campers from Europe and the southern USA.” A common not-so-positive comment, however, was poor signage while travelling on Highways 16, 4 and 40 and within the town limits. This is an ongoing comment heard by the Town, said Mayor Derek Mahon.

promote via Internet and brochures throughout the RV communities may help increase our attendance numbers.”

Mills also reported on the use of the picnic shelter, which was used throughout the season.

“We had many reunions, weddings, school gatherings, parties and birthday

parties,” he wrote. “Our camping permits increase from the shelter rental.”

He added there were times when a great deal of clean-up time is required, so he asked council to consider an increase in the shelter fees.

Later in the meeting councillors did approve a change in the fees.

Man wanted on warrant arrested Staff

Friday, Blaine Lake and Shellbrook RCMP worked together to arrest a man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for being unlawfully at large.

Shellbrook RCMP received information that Cheyenne Pechawis, who had walked away from a halfway house in British Columbia two weeks ago, was at a residence on the Mistawasis First Nation.

The arrest was made without incident, according to police.

Pedestrian Struck by Vehicle

A pedestrian was transported to Battlefords Union Hospital by WPD Ambulance at about 9:35 a.m.

Sunday after being hit by a vehicle.

According to the North Battleford Fire Department, the individual was struck at

the intersection of Territorial Drive and 95th Street.

Thursday, firefighters

were called to 1191 – 99th St. where smoke from an unattended pot on a stove had

set off the fire alarm system.

Four firefighters spent about 30 minutes on the scene.

Youth arrested after cabin break-ins Staff

One 17-year-old youth has been arrested and charged with theft after a number of complaints to RCMP in the early morning of Sept. 28 about breakins to several cabins in the Cochin area.

The youth is facing charges of theft and failing to stop for a police officer.

RCMP say several other suspects have been identified and are being sought.

Three motorized golf carts were reported stolen at the time, and police say all have been recovered and returned to their owners.

The RCMP urge cabin owners to

take steps to ensure the safety of seasonal property, and are urging people to remove items from seasonal dwellings if at all possible. This has been a historic issue in the Cochin area, and the police encourage people to take precautions in order to minimize potential loss of property.

Continued from Page 6 “I just recently finished my seventh treatment,” says Fox. Despite her illness, things were going smoothly at work. Progress was being made on the new building. Her uncle began helping with the contracting and her husband returned to work reluctantly.

“His job takes him all over Saskatchewan and Alberta and he doesn’t want to leave because of my cancer,” she explains.

“I have one more chemo treatment to do and then I have surgery, so everything is set,” she says.

Then there will be a follow up of one month of radiation treatments, Monday to Friday, she says.

“I will have to take time off. I will have to go to Saskatoon for that.”

She told the staff, “Possibly, I will be gone three months, but I’ll check up on you guys and will hire somebody to help, another manager. I won’t leave you high and dry.”

Everything seemed on track and a date was set to move into the new store in August. But yet another personal tragedy was about to befall Fox. Her son, while in Saskatoon looking for work, took his own life.

“I think that was the last straw, because still today I don’t know if I am ready to carry on,” says Fox, who cannot yet talk about her son without weeping. “He was 19 years old, and it was a shock.”

Fox says he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of his death. She doesn’t know why he did it, but his girlfriend had just broken up with him and that may have been part of it.

Fox was devastated, but she has managed to find a way to carry on.

“I didn’t come to work for all of August and most of September,” says Fox. “One day I got up and I came and sat outside with the staff and they said, ‘We miss you, come back, we’re falling apart. We need you back.’”

She told them, “I don’t know if I can do it. I miss my baby.”

But, she says, “I have a seven-year-old at home who tells me every day, ‘I love you,

“My husband, sisters, uncles and my staff encouraged me to keep going on and build the store. Now it’s a big deal to everybody because now they see after everything that’s happened in my life in the past year that I’m not stopping. We’re still going.”

Friday, Oct. 16 has been set for the grand opening.

“I did talk about putting it off, but the staff said, ‘No, we’re going to do it.’”

They have a barbecue planned, along with door prizes and draws.

She told them, “I need your guys’ help because I can’t do it on my own anymore,” and they have taken on the move from the old store to the new building about 150 yards away with gusto.

“They don’t want me to move anything.

They’ve been doing all the moving,” says Fox. “I was going to hire movers, but they said, ‘No, we’ll do it.’”

She says she is feeling well and though she can’t help with the moving, she still plays her part.

“I’m good to walk around and order them around,” she laughs.

Last Tuesday, a crane was on the site to move the gas tank to its new position for hookup to the new pump. All the staff were there, moving equipment and stock and watching the relocation of the tank, an important step toward the grand opening.

Meanwhile, customers were coming and going as the old store continued business as usual.

Fox says, “I’m happy here with management of the store. I know I have to take some time off and council wants me to take time off to heal after my cancer, so I am hoping to beat that, and it not to come back.”

She’s relieved that moving day has finally come for her staff.

“I want to make sure they are in that new store before I leave. That’s my goal.”

Bats in post office

Infestation causes temporary closure Staff The Battleford post office is temporarily closed until further notice.

Other media sources indicate an infestation of bats has been cited as the reason for the closure.

According to those reports there is concern for the safety of employees and customers.

Bats can carry diseases that can be passed on to humans.

During the closure, post office customers can pick up their mail and do other business at a temporary office set up in the former Hillcrest Centre building. It is located at 122 - 24th St.

There was football under the lights Thursday at Beaver Lions Stadium as the North Battleford Comprehensive High School Vikings battled the Bishop James Mahoney High School Saints.

The Vikings were looking to get back in the win column after last week’s tough 38-35 defeat to P.A. St. Mary in Prince Albert.

The game did not get off to a fast start on the score sheet, though the Vikings did have chances in the first quarter.

A great run by Landon Aimoe put the Vikings in position at the 18-yard line of Bishop Mahoney, but a couple of plays later quarterback Damon Dutton fumbled the football away to the Saints, putting a stop to the

best Viking scoring chance in the first.

Early in the second quarter a 40-yard reception by Ethan Godson set up a Doug Fleming touchdown run on the next play, and BJM took a 7-0 lead.

Late in the second the Vikings fumbled at the 25 and BJM took over deep in Vikings territory. A touchdown toss to Taijal Verma made it 14-0.

Before the half a costly pass interference penalty put the Vikes at the Saints 15-yard line. A few plays later Dylan Schafer capped the drive with a TD run near the end of the half to make it 14-7. A late Saints drive into Viking territory was stuffed by a Jesse McNabb interception, however, and it remained 14-7 Saints at the half.

other drive midway through the third and a third-down gamble paid off with a long conversion to Aimoe who rumbled into the end zone for the touchdown. The extra point tied the game at 14 all in the third.

Late in the third, a big catch by Verma put the Saints at the Vikings 42. A short gain was followed by a 2nd-and-9 pass completion to Noah Muensch, which put the Saints in position to score again as the quarter ended.

Early in the fourth, the Saints’ Matthew Nagy scored on a 25-yard touchdown catch to make it 2014, but Dawson Lehman blocked the extra point to keep the game within reach for the Vikings.

by Matt Dutton put the Vikings in the red zone at the four-yard line within the final three minutes of regulation.

A pass attempt to Schaefer fell short, and then another pass went incomplete. It came down to a third down play, and Matt Dutton caught the ball in the end zone for the touchdown.

The extra point was good to give the Vikings a 21-20 lead with 2:31 left on the clock.

The Saints were unable to mount a comeback. Their final drive fizzled out, and the Vikings marched down the field for a final clockconsuming drive.

AAA Stars win two, lose one on the weekend

Coach Martin Smith’s boys were at Beardy’s First Nation Thursday night, as the Battlefords AAA Stars were looking to return to the win column against the Blackhawks.

The first period was scoreless, but an explosive second period on the score sheet put the Stars ahead. Goals by Ben Hiltz, Jordan Mish and Jayden Nachtegaele gave the Stars an immediate 3-0 lead.

After Cody Madarash took an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, Keelan Saworski’s power play goal from Owen Lamb midway through the third period made it 4-0. With 3:22 remaining, a goal from the Blackhawks’ Shay Kiryk, also on the power play, ruined the shutout bid of Jake Taylor, who nevertheless stopped 23 of

24 shots for the Stars victory.

Kody Kushniruk was able to stop only 26 of 30 in net for Beardy’s.

The Maulers and Stars were back in action again Sunday afternoon at the Civic Centre, and this time the Stars got off to a much better start, in large part due to the efforts of Tanner Brewster.

Brewster’s goal midway through the period from JC Dubecky and Owen Lamb, followed by a power play goal from Brewster with Lamb assisting, made it 2-0 Stars through one.

With the Maulers’ Austin Shumanski off for holding, Keelan Saworski’s power play goal at the 4:40 mark of the second period from Kent Hanson and Brandon Griffiths made it 3-0 Stars.

But Yorkton came back as Carson Miller and then Drayson Skulmoski (on the power play) added goals to cut it to 3-2. In the second period, shots also favoured Yorkton 17-12.

The Stars got into a hole early and often against the Yorkton RawTec Maulers at the Civic Centre Saturday night.

The final score was 5-2.

Shots on goal favoured the Rebels by a 40-25 margin.

The Sharks now have some time off before their next game Oct. 21 in Prince Albert against the Bears.

Must win a bust, now what?

Newsflash: The Saskatchewan Roughriders will not win the 2015 Grey Cup. Although you may have had that suspicion for much of this ill-fated campaign, the Green and White were officially eliminated from the playoff race Friday night with a 30-15 loss to the Tiger-Cats at a sold out Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton.

It dropped the Riders to 2-13 and represented the earliest in a season they’ve been mathematically extinguished in my 17 seasons of calling Saskatchewan’s games on radio. There are still three games left to go.

So what’s next?

We’ll examine that in a minute.

But first, as far as Fri-

day’s game went, it was another must-win game for the Roughriders and for a second straight week, they inexplicably came out flat.

With Kevin Glenn as the team’s starting quarterback (just like the 46-20 loss in B.C. the week before), Saskatchewan trailed 20-0 at halftime and it was at

that point Glenn was given the hook in favour of rookie Brett Smith.

Bob Dyce told reporters they have “two plans” for the rest of the season. One for the scenario of them remaining in postseason contention and the other for if/ when they were mathematically eliminated. And the latter is where they sit now.

Interim General Manager Jeremy O’Day divulged on Friday’s pre-game show those two plans are “significantly different” and that they were just waiting for the right time to implement them. They didn’t want to indicate to the players they were “throwing in the towel” on the season.

Conventional wisdom suggests they would play their veteran starters when the games counted and play their rookies and youngsters once the games don’t.

That, right now, is the most intriguing situation with Canada’s Team. Unfortunately we’re not on the edge of our seats with the drama of a playoff race but we’re curiously watching where the franchise goes as it attempts to repair itself from the wreckage of one of its worst seasons ever.

And no one is quite sure which direction that will be.

“I have no idea what our staff is going to do with the last three games,” admitted starting receiver Weston Dressler. “I don’t take this game for granted. I know how quickly it can end at any time. I’m going to make the most of my opportunities whenever I’m on the field.”

Of course the question now is: how much will that be?

Activities promote fire prevention in the B’fords

The week of Oct. 4-10 was a chance for people in the Battlefords to hear the message of fire prevention.

North Battleford Fire Department organized a number of activities to get the message out during Fire Prevention Week.

A display was set up at Sobeys and there were also fire drills conducted at schools, which included a blocked exit exercise to teach students what to do if an exit isn’t accessible.

Wednesday was the annual smokey on a bun event, inviting people to visit the fire hall, get some fire prevention information and see the department’s equipment. All proceeds went to the Burn Fund.

The fire department also hosted a Junior Fire Chief program Friday. Students representing nine schools in the Battlefords visited the fire hall and learned about all aspects of the fire department and how to use the fire equipment.

A display was also set up at Co-op Mall to end the week .

The theme of the week this year was “hear the beep where you sleep,” highlighting the importance of having a working smoke alarm in your home and in your bedroom.

Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Steinborn noted a fire could easily start in a bedroom because of electronics being plugged in and possibly overloading.

“Every time you have so much of that stuff you have the potential of having a fire hazard,” said Steinborn, noting the importance of having a smoke alarm that is working and which can wake people up in the middle of the night.

He cited the importance of having one in the bedroom because by the time a smoke alarm sounds in a hallway, it could be too late for the person inside the room, he said.

“We do and have had bedrooms that have been on fire, so it’s a good message.”

Steinborn said the law states you need a smoke alarm for every level of a home. For existing homes, they are recommended for sleeping rooms as well, but for new homes it is a requirement.

While the job title is “firefighter,” the function of educating and communicating to the public is a vital part of the fire department’s mandate. And it is a function that goes on well beyond Fire Prevention Week.

“It’s not just Fire Prevention Week,” said Steinborn.

“It’s Fire Prevention Year, and that’s what we’re doing all the time, is trying to go out and teach people about fire safety and how to be safe in their homes.”

Recognizing important milestones The years of our lives are dotted with milestones.

Significant events that become markers along the way, ones bringing major change, watersheds that turn the course of our lives in a new direction, for better or worse.

I can remember V.E. Day when I was a boy, marking the end of the war in Europe. My father came in the house bearing a newspaper with giant headlines. “It’s over,” he said. As adults, many of us recall vividly the horror of the terrorist attacks of 9-11.

On a more personal level, there’s perhaps the day of our wedding, of the birth of a child, but maybe also the day a parent or spouse died.

Sad days and glad days.

Milestones.

The greatest turning point in anyone’s life is the day of his or her conversion. Becoming a born again Christian through personal faith in Christ is the most transforming change of all. Kenneth Taylor’s paraphrase of Second Corinthians 5:17 says: “When someone becomes a Christian he becomes a brand new person inside. He is not the same any more. A new life has begun.”

The Bible uses various descriptions to impress this difference upon us. The one who was spiritually dead

and that great spiritual milestone in the life of the believer. Published in 1918, and taking its title from the first line of the refrain, it says, “I was lost in sin when Jesus found me, / But He rescued me, all glory to His name! / And the cords of worldly pleasure bound me,

is now spiritually alive.

“You He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins.” (Eph. 2:1; Rom. 6:23) He has gone from being under condemnation, to being delivered from condemnation. “There is ... no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Rom. 8:1; cf. Jn. 5:24) Through faith in Christ, the one who was in spiritual darkness now is flooded with light, “that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” (I Pet. 2:9; cf. Eph. 5:8) And the one who was lost has been found. This latter contrast is brought out repeatedly in three parables Jesus told. In one, the prodigal son’s father says of him that he “was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.” (Lk. 15:32; cf. vs. 6, 9, 24) This is a drastic and dramatic change indeed. And so it seemed to pastor and hymn writer Albert Simp-

son Reitz (1879-1966). Reitz was born in Kansas, the son of a Methodist pastor.

For some years he travelled as a soloist with evangelist Henry Ostram (author of the gospel song Is It the Crowning Day?). Then, after attending Moody Bible Institute, in Chicago, Albert Reitz became a pastor himself and the author of over 100 hymns.

Perhaps the most familiar of his songs is Teach Us to Pray. Reitz was serving a church in California, where he ministered for twenty-six years. During that time an inspiring Day of Prayer was held. He reports, “From early morning, we prayed, and God definitely made His presence real to us.”

The following morning, reflecting on the blessings of that day, wrote the song, based on Luke 11:1.

The song we are looking at now may be lesser known, but it is a joyful testimony to the transforming power of the gospel,

/ Till He saved me from sin and shame.”

This is one of a few of our sacred songs whose refrain (or chorus) is longer than the stanzas–in fact, it’s twice as long–saying, “‘Twas a glad day when Jesus found me, / When His strong arms were thrown

around me; / When my sins He buried in the deepest sea, / And my soul He filled with joy and victory. / ‘Twas a glad day, O hallelujah! / ‘Twas a glad day He claimed His own. / I will shout a glad hosanna in glory / When I see Him upon His throne.”

Thanks for the service With just a few more minutes needed to complete another lap, I enter the final curve of the track, eyes fixed on the barracks. I’ve left behind views of the forest and the mountains; vistas of the Pacific Ocean have once more come into view but that’s not where my attention is focused. It’s on the older, but wellmaintained, buildings tucked into the forest across the street.

Known to locals as the Timberlane Barracks, hundreds if not thousands of young people have completed their army, navy or air force cadet training here. Over those same years brand new recruits have brushed shoulders with veterans who have paid the price of defending our freedom,

civilian instructors have contributed their knowledge and experience alongside those who have given their best to preserve our right to choose who will determine our country’s future. Tears are not uncommon as I round this stretch of asphalt.

In this last Tracking my Thanks note of gratitude, I am reminded not only of our military, but also of those who guard and protect us closer to home. This week our community is experiencing a rare event — the

discovery of a body and the presence of police and a taped-off crime scene. I feel new depths of appreciation for those men and women who help make this sort of thing a rarity.

Then there is our fire department and its rapid response to incidents requiring their expertise. Be it an accident, a community event or an actual fire, they are there and their presence is reassuring.

Not to be forgotten is our strong contingent of search and rescue volunteers, a special group of men and women who have committed themselves to put the needs of lost or stranded individuals ahead of their own plans.

I start another lap, spurred on by thanksgiving.

Jessie, along with her older sister Helen and younger brother James were born and raised at her parent’s farm north of Livelong across from Turtle Lake and attended elementary school in a nearby rural school and High School in Livelong. She attended Normal school in Saskatoon with her sister Helen. She taught in a number of schools before retiring to North Battleford. Jessie married Edwin Hicks in 1952 and resided in Fairholme and the family farm located near Fairholme for a number of years raising their only daughter Heather. Jessie was predeceased by her husband Edwin in 2004, her father and mother (Bella and Charles McTeer) her brother James and her sister Helen Eischen and brother-in-law Victor. She is survived by her daughter Heather and son in law Dennis, her grandchildren, Tracy Gaja (Joe) Stacy, Michael(Michelle) and Melissa. Her great grandchildren Catherine, Logan and Noah, sister-in-law Marion Ray ; nieces Bernadette Beynon (Pat) and Veronica Padget (Brett) and nephew James Eischen (Laurette) as well as numerous other nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at the Livelong Cemetery in May or June of 2016. Thank you is a word that cannot express our immense gratitude for all those that helped mom in her last year, especially during her hospitalization on August 21. The emergency doctors, her family Doctor, Dr. Morton and his staff. The dedicated Homecare Workers who came to her home daily and even gave up part of their lunch time to help mom with her lunch in the hospital. The Home Care Administrative staff that organized and explained many important issues to her. The nurses who looked after her needs in rooms 313 and 323.

They helped to retain part of her dignity and self-respect at a time when she was very aware of what was happening. Every small act from clerks in stores, Handi-van drivers, workers at Tim Horton’s where she went for her morning coffee, complete strangers. You never know when one small gesture can have far reaching effects.

Culture Days activities draw all ages to ARC

During Culture Days Sept. 25 to 27, ARC Creative Studios opened the studio to the public, offering an opportunity to participate in creative artistic possibilities.

Over the three days the studio was full. Men, women and children of all ages, who were more than ready to roll up their sleeves, get dirty and create some art, took advantage of the opportunity.

The studio offered five art events each of the three

days, running from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday evening and all afternoon Saturday and Sunday. The events were: Printmaking with Mary Anne Baxter; Acrylic Possibilities with Rosemarie Stadnyk; Reclaiming or Creating a New Toy by Sherron Burns; Inks on Ceramic Tile by Kamila Badura; and Clay Creations with Joanne Rivers Wing.

Participants spent extensive time at their stations of choice. All the activities took no less than one hour and often close to two hours, so many people returned for a second or third visit. The

studio has a small gallery space, so most participants chose to leave their masterpieces for a couple of weeks to display on our walls.

We hope the public feels free to stop by any Friday or Saturday afternoon to view the show. We felt our weekend was a huge success and are tweaking plans for next year.

We are grateful to Saskatchewan Culture Days for their assistance supporting the weekend, to all our visitors, art facilitators and Culture Days photographer, Amanda Fisher.
