Council results in NB: Steinborn, Taylor and Lindgren three newest members

Three incumbents are being joined by three new faces at the council table in North Battleford.

Incumbents Kelli Hawtin, Don Buglas and Greg Lightfoot were all re-elected, with Kevin Steinborn, Len Taylor and Kent Lindgren joining them.

And a lot of big names, including Wayne Ray, Grace Lang, Don Salie and incumbent Cathy Richardson, ended up on the outside looking in.

The unofficial tally with all 19 polls reporting showed Steinborn, former North Battleford deputy fire chief, topping the field with 1,273, Hawtin with 1,257, Taylor with 1,232, Lightfoot and Buglas tied with 1,129, and Lindgren claiming the sixth and final spot with 1,062, edging out Richardson with 1,051.

Results were declared official Friday morning by city returning officer Debbie Wohlberg.

The six councillors will join mayor-elect Ryan Bater, who was acclaimed

as mayor in September, at the council table beginning with the swearing-in ceremonies on Nov. 7.

City Hall was where all the action was on election night. Candidates gathered in council chambers to watch results from all polling places posted on the big screen. Reporters were also there to cover the results live, with Access 7 TV doing an election-night broadcast from chambers as well.

Despite a crowded field of experienced challengers it turned out to be a good night for most incumbents.

For Buglas it is his fifth win in a row, and the second in a row for Hawtin and Lightfoot.

“Very humbled,” was the reaction of Lightfoot when the results were in.

He credited meeting the people during the campaign for his win. “Definitely get out there and talk to a lot of people and find out what the issues are, and make sure that you’re listening to the folks in the community.”

He adds that “most people were happy with the way the community was going. We’ve tried our best to keep taxes low, we’ve taken a fairly proactive approach to fixing our infrastructure issue. And we’ve definitely done a fairly good job putting together a good safety strategy.”

Lightfoot also said people were happy with some of the actions downtown.

While Taylor is a newcomer to this next council, he is far from an unfamiliar face in politics. His political experience has spanned the federal and provincial level, but it has been a long time since the last council meeting Taylor attended. He was on council from 2000 to 2003, during the water crisis years.

“It’s been a while,” said Taylor. “I was there during cryptosporidium time, (I) learned an awful lot about how council works and all those sorts of things pretty quickly. Of course I’ve done a few things since

then, but I’ve never lost my interest in the city of North Battleford and its citizens.”

Taylor was also happy to see a council with both experience and some youth to it. He was pleased to see Lindgren, an HIV project co-ordinator who has been active in politics with the local NDP, get elected as well.

“The city of North Battleford has an awful lot of young, active people,” said Taylor. “I was very happy to see that Kelli (Hawtin) was running again and that Kent was putting his name into the race. I was thinking at that point a mix of older, experienced council members and new, active young people in the community would make a dynamic council. So I’m very happy that both Kelli and Kent will be sitting around the council table with a couple of us older guys.”

Perhaps the biggest winner of the night was Steinborn. He was known in the community from his days as a deputy fire chief and as chair of HUB, but never expected a firstplace finish among the 15 candidates.

“I’m very proud and honoured and very surprised,” said Steinborn, who said he was hoping simply for a fifth or sixth place finish to get on council.

“I think just me working with the City, with the fire department over the last 30 years, a lot of people in the city got to know me and got to know how passionate I was for the protection and safety of the citizens

of North Battleford. Like I said, I didn’t expect this at all. I just wanted to run, be an ear for the community and a voice ... I’m just very proud of the outcome and I’m very proud of the team I’m going to be able to work for and work with, and we’ll make some positive changes.”

It was obvious from early on in the count that Steinborn, Hawtin and Taylor were headed for victory. The battle for the last spot on council proved especially tight between Richardson and Lindgren, with Lindgren managing to come from behind to prevail with the results from the very last poll to come in.

Results were initially slow to arrive, but after about 40 minutes a flood of results started to come in and counting was done by roughly 10 p.m.

The city council race was not the only one in North Battleford on Wednesday.

Results are also in for the three Living Sky school board seats in North Battleford and the winners are Richard Hiebert with 794, Glenn Wouters with 785 and David Garth Link with 777. Finishing fourth was Margaret-Rose Uvery with 414.

Overall, 2,563 voters went to the polls in North Battleford, for an estimated voter turnout of 20.6 per cent, according to the City’s news release Thursday morning. Voter turnout was up from 17.5 per cent in the last election in 2012.

Ames Leslie earns strong mandate as mayor New councillors eager to get to work

With the results in from Wednesday night’s election in Battleford, residents will have two new voices to represent them around the council table.

Judy Pruden and Kevin Russell, first and third highest vote-getters respectively, will be joining incumbent councillors Susan McLean Tady, Doug Laing, Shelley Boutin-Gervais and Gordon Yarde, along

with former-councillor, now-mayor, Ames Leslie.

Speaking about her new role, Pruden said she was eager to get started.

“I think the community is interested in what’s happening and I find that very exciting,” Pruden added, “I want to be part of the team to continue on [with what council has been doing].”

Previous council decisions she says she would like to see more of include the Automatic Road Analyzer scan that took place

last September that analyzed the quality of Battleford’s roads. She also supports the newly implemented town-wide, curbside recycling. She says the initiatives have taken a proactive, long-term approach to the town’s needs.

Russell echoed Pruden’s sentiments about continuing in the previous council’s tracks, but particularly highlighted maintaining affordable taxes and spending money wisely.

investment is one of his priorities, in regards to both a permanent post office and the proposed liquor store.

As for why Russell decided to run for council this year, he said he’s invested in the community for two reasons — his daughters.

“I chose this community to raise my family. Most of the time it’s safe to play at the park and ride a bike to a friend’s house.”

Russell continued, “I want to be a big part of our community, I have been in

the past and I want to continue.”

Both Russell and Pruden will be sworn in at the next regular meeting of town council on Nov. 7 Leslie earned the right to be Battleford’s mayor for the next four years, having 680 votes cast for him.

Challenging in the mayor’s race was David George, who received 347 votes.

Incumbent candidates elected were BoutinGervais, who received

577 votes, Laing with 712, McLean Tady with 663 and Gordon Yarde with 576.

The two remaining council seats go to the newly elected candidates. Pruden, was the top vote-getter with 722. Russell had 695 votes.

Also running for council were Kirby Arbeau, who had 376 votes, and Ken Chartier, who came close to the last council spot with 563 votes.

A total of 1,033 were votes cast, with six ballots were spoiled.

Bugler Jr. would have been elected to council seats if the students had their say, earning seats alongside Don Buglas, Kelli Hawtin and Kevin Steinborn.

Results came in from four North Battleford schools as part of the 2016 Student Vote initiative.

The Student Vote is conducted to provide students

under the voting age the opportunity to experience voting and learn about how democracy and government works.

Students marked their ballots in voting booths set up at schools across the province, to closely simulate how an election is run.

According to the results for North Battleford

released by Student Vote, Buglas topped the student vote with 115 votes.

Hawtin had 112, Steinborn 99, Bugler 84, Cormons 74

and Turcotte 66.

The “unsuccessful” candidates for council were Darren Olson with 64, Don Salie 61, Wayne Ray 58,

Greg Lightfoot 57, Kent Lindgren 55, Len Taylor 53, Cathy Richardson 52, Grace Lang 47 and Colin Evans 41.

The results were declared in a short ceremony held in council chambers at the Kindersley administration office.

Perkins takes over from Shaun Henry, who had been serving as acting mayor of Kindersley since early this year. Henry was re-elected to council in the election.

There is a local Battlefords angle to the story.

The former Kindersley mayor was John EnnsWind, who resigned in January to accept his new job as chief administrative officer in Battleford.

Commentary

What is an ISDS? A threat to nationhood

By William Wardill ISDS is an acronym for investor state dispute settlement. It is a feature of the North America Free Trade Agreement that gives foreign investors the right to sue Canada if their potential profits are limited by any legislation passed by any level of government within Canada.

It is a partial surrender of national sovereignty, which is what all treaties involve. Its poisonous nature was first revealed when the U.S.-based Ethyl Corporation sued Ottawa for passing legislation that banned the import and inter-provincial transportation of a manganese-based fuel additive called MMT. The additive, made by Ethyl, had already been outlawed in the United States by the Environmental Protection Agency. Despite this, Ethyl, acting under the terms of NAFTA, sued Canada for lost profits from the sale of the additive.

Let’s get back to basics. Any national government, no matter how small, has, in the interest of its citizens and the environment in which they live, the right to control the activities of all corporations, both domestic and foreign, within its borders. If this is not recognized as an over-arching principle of international relations, it should be. If foreign corporations don’t like the rules and if governments can’t or won’t change them, the foreigners should pack up and leave, without protest.

According to some sources, Canada was being sued by the Ethyl Corporation for $350 US million. According to another account, Ottawa caved and made an out-

of-court settlement $13 US million. Canadians should have known all about it, but they didn’t. Canadians should have been outraged, but they weren’t.

The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives claimed in 2015 that Canada had paid out $172 CAD million to settle claims brought by U.S. corporations and that adjudications of a further $6 billion in claims were pending.

With this experience in mind no informed Canadian could justify the presence of the same corporationfriendly feature in the Trans Pacific Partnership and the European trade deal that was initiated by the former Conservative government. With the second coming of a Trudeau to the hallowed halls of parliament, avid supporters believed Justin Trudeau would excise the offending feature or else was in possession of a magic formula that would inoculate Canadians against its harmful consequences. Anybody who believes this is plainly wrong.

Trade deals are treaties and treaties limit the sovereignty of nations for whatever period they remain in effect.

The pending trade deals are being presented as beneficial to all sectors of the Canadian economy and harmful to none. Visualize them as beautiful red apples hanging in a tree and then realize that ISDS are worms in both of them.

Consider the immensely profitable investment of Swiss-based Nestle in Canada. The company draws 316 million litres of water from an aquifer that is also the water source for the communities of Fergus and Elora, Ont. The company pays the Province of Ontario $3.71 for a million litres. On average, the retail price of a single litre of bottled water is $1.20. Such a wide profit margin is unconscionable.

In British Columbia, Nestle is extracting 265 million litres of water annually from aquifers that are of vital importance to Canadians, many of whom reside in First Nation communities. The province raised the price to $2.25 per million litre in 2016. Thus far, there has been no public announcement that Nestle in the United States will sue Canada under the terms of NAFTA. It is reasonable to assume the NDP will oppose both new trade deals. Unless the Trudeau Liberals rediscover their pre-election conscience, the pacts will be approved.

Under the terms of CETA, Nestle from Switzerland will become a new player in the piratical plundering of Canada’s fresh water resources. ISDS are not only impractical, they are immoral.

Canada is a democracy. Government has a duty to provide fair and equal treatment to its citizens. ISDS infested trade deals make foreign corporations, to quote George, “more equal” than anybody else.

Read Brian Zinchuk’s From the Top of the Pile in this coming Thursday edition of the Regional Optimist and you’ll get in on his rant against Regina’s bylaw that prohibits parking of RVs on driveways during the winter months.

That rule does seem a little over the top, and enforcement officers are going to be unpopular people over the coming weeks.

But how about the fact winter is coming and those who park their big honking RVs on the street in Battleford continue to do so. In some cases they’ve been there all summer. I tried to access bylaws on the Town’s website but couldn’t find them. That said, I’m certain there are rules setting out how long you can park on the street.

I recall getting a notice on our truck once when we still had teenagers at home and there wasn’t enough room on the driveway for everyone’s vehicle.

So how about it, new administration, can we get some bylaw enforcement?

And, with creative new minds on council, perhaps the problem of quads destroying the river valley can also be solved. The quad jockeys were having a heyday down there Sunday afternoon.

Carbon tax debate, NDP convention dominate Not all the action in provincial politics was in the legislature during this past week.

Some key activity took place in Saskatoon at TCU Place. About 400 delegates attended the Saskatchewan New Democrats’ convention Oct. 21-23, with the party still reeling from their disastrous election showing in the April provincial vote.

The gathering included several policy resolutions as well as speeches from Alberta NDP MLA Sarah Hoffman and newly-elected Manitoba NDP MLA Wab Kinew, as well as from interim Opposition leader Trent Wotherspoon, Back in the legislature Monday, Battlefords issues and achievements enjoyed prominence.

During members’ statements, Battlefords MLA Herb Cox, coming off his most recent cancer treatment, delivered remarks about the Battlefords Business Excellence awards that took place earlier this month in North Battleford.

Here were his remarks as recorded in Hansard.

Mr. Cox: — Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I’m also pleased to rise today to congratulate a number of Battlefords area businesses that were recognized at the 23rd annual Battlefords Business Excellence Awards gala. This sold-out event was hosted by the Battlefords Chamber of Commerce and was held at the Dekker Centre for Performing Arts in North Battleford on October the 4th.

Mr. Speaker, a record 41 finalists were nominated for awards in six categories this year. The winners included All Out Graphics & Design Ltd. in the category of New Business Venture; Fisher’s Drug Store for Customer Service; Lakeland Veterinary Services for

Community Contribution; Gold Eagle Casino in the category of Marketing; Jewellery Connection Inc. in the category of Microbusiness; and Anderson Pump House Ltd., winner of the Battlefords Best Employer. Mr. Speaker, two additional groups were recognized for their exceptional business contributions in the Battlefords area. The Dekker family was honoured with the Heritage Award for their dedication to broadcasting and community involvement. The family’s 60 years of involvement with Battlefords area radio stations came to an end last year when David Dekker retired from his role as general manager of CJNB, Q98, and 93.3 The Rock.

Mr. Speaker, the evening culminated with the member from BiggarSask Valley presenting the Business of the Year Award to Fortress Windows and Doors Ltd. I ask all members to join me in congratulating all of the outstanding nominees and winners of the 2016 BBEX [Battlefords Business Excellence] awards. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

During Question Period, the issue of funding to the Lighthouse in North Battleford came up. Prince Albert Northcote MLA Nicole Rancourt demanded answers from Regina University MLA Tina Beaudry-Mellor, Minister of Social Services, on the issue.

Ms. Rancourt: — Mr. Speaker, it isn’t just Saskatoon where the Sask Party has made these backward cuts. In fact their cuts to the Lighthouse in North Battleford made national news.

The Lighthouse in North Battleford serviced not only that city but all the communities surrounding it. Front-line workers and

newsoptimist.john@sasktel.net community members have told us about the devastating consequences to these cuts. Most governments would have fessed up and reversed this terrible decision, but not the Sask Party. They have gone further and cut deeper.

Mr. Speaker, how does this make any sense?

The Speaker: — I recognize the Minister of Social Services.

Hon. Ms. BeaudryMellor: — Mr. Speaker, we have no contract with the North Battleford Lighthouse, and we will be meeting with the Saskatoon Lighthouse to discuss longer term, sustainable planning. But let’s remember that our government has created 252 new shelter spaces in Saskatchewan as a government, which is more than double what existed before.

We’ve also increased the per diem rates up to eight times since 2008, and we’ve increased our investments in 332 units for those who are hard to house — exactly the kinds of people who are looking for longer term, sustainable housing that exist here.

The main news from the Monday sitting, however, was the start of debate on a motion by Premier Brad Wall on the carbon tax issue.

His extensive remarks slammed the carbon pricing introduced by the Trudeau government.

Hon. Mr. Wall: —Make no mistake, Mr. Speaker:

this tax may be revenue neutral I guess in principle, but it is not sector neutral. And it is not neutral as to the regions of this country. There are two provinces that will pay mightily with jobs that Saskatchewan and Alberta families depend on if this tax goes ahead. And all the revenue-neutral bell whistles don’t change the fact that when you make this carbon-intense part of Canada’s economy uncompetitive, it’s going to go somewhere else, and so will those jobs.

Do you know, the economists call it carbon leakage. And here we call it layoffs, in Saskatchewan. We call it declining business and declining opportunity. And if we let that happen, Mr. Speaker, we have less of a tax base upon which to provide better health care and better education and to fix more roads, and we are determined that it not happen in Saskatchewan. … For many, many, many years, these provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta have provided — and they still do today — opportunity for other Canadians. And we’ve seen them come and work here and then go back, sometimes, to Atlantic Canada. But that’s when the country’s working at its best, and well we are

proud to play that role.

That’s a role we didn’t always play in this country. We’re proud that we play that role as a have province. We say to the federal government, let it continue. Let’s actually focus on the real problem.

And let us not go down the road with an ill-considered and reckless carbon tax that will cost the jobs of Canadians without any relief in sight, Mr. Speaker. And so I will move this motion: That this Assembly supports the Government of Saskatchewan’s position on climate change as outlined in the climate change white paper released on October 18, 2016; and further That this Assembly opposes the federal government’s plan to impose a national carbon tax.

Opposition leader Trent Wotherspoon proposed an amendment to Wall’s motion.

Mr. Wotherspoon: —Mr. Speaker, instead of leadership and meaningful advocacy, time and time again we have seen this Premier and his party pass on the chance to invest in renewable energy and technologies that would lower emissions and create good mortgage-paying jobs for Saskatchewan people — the kind of jobs that would be driving and helping our economy right now, Mr. Speaker.

When there’s so much at stake for Saskatchewan

people, we need leadership. We need Saskatchewan action and a made-in-Saskatchewan plan. Doing nothing isn’t going to cut it.

The Premier’s response of doing nothing and sitting on this just won’t cut it.

Do we need to act on climate change? We certainly do. It’s unfortunate that this Premier has denied Saskatchewan people having that opportunity to be leaders from this point into this debate, Mr. Speaker, and as such has given up the voice that we should have.

So I’ll propose the following amendment to the Premier’s motion: That all words in the motion after “supports” be struck out and replaced with the following: the implementation of The Management and Reduction of Greenhouse Gases Act so that Saskatchewan can once again show leadership in reducing carbon emissions and earn back credibility on this file; and further That this Assembly condemn the Premier for his failure to address climate change after nearly a decade in power, and for giving up Saskatchewan’s voice and credibility when it comes to protecting Saskatchewan’s interests in our environment; and further That this Assembly opposes the federal government’s plan to impose a national carbon tax.

Dekker Centre Presents

Pre-show performers add to series enjoyment Submitted Since its grand opening in September 2012, the Dekker Centre has brought a rich variety of entertainers to North Battleford’s premium performing arts centre.

The Dekker Centre Presents concert series includes 12 to 16 performances from September to June, selected to represent a variety of performance forms and genres.

Concert seriesgoers now have an incentive to arrive early to enjoy a preshow performance in the Dekker Centre Atrium.

Starting at approximately 7:15 p.m., prior to the 8 p.m. main show curtain, a talented local artist plays, strums or sings while guests visit, drink a glass of wine or simply sit and appreciate the music.

The Dekker Centre Showcase committee finds and schedules the performers. Responsible for producing the showcase On Stage at the Dekker Centre (last March’s production of Home was a big success), Dianne Gryba and JoAnne Kasper try to select musicians who

will complement the main stage performer.

So far this season, the centre has presented the fiddling of Kanndece Quijada-Sawitsky, pianist and composer Sarah Whitbread and the choral stylings of the Sweet Adelines. Singer-songwriter Jeremy Grey will perform prior to the April Verch concert Saturday, Nov. 5,

while Brent Nixon and the Beer League Band will get us in the mood for the Ray Charles Tribute Orchestra on Sat., Nov. 19.

North Stars win streak reaches six games

Thanks to some stellar play as of late, the Battlefords North Stars are locked in a tight battle for first place in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

Following an 8-2 rout of the Yorkton Terriers Friday and a 2-1 triumph over the Notre Dame Hounds Saturday at the Civic Centre, the North Stars have rattled off six straight victories and are just one point back of the Estevan Bruins and Humboldt Broncos for the top spot in the 12-team loop.

Despite the team’s success, head coach and general manager Nate Bedford is keeping everything in perspective with just one month gone in the 2016-17 campaign.

“This team is used to winning under (former head coach and general manager) Kevin (Hasselberg), so they know what to expect,” Bedford said.

“We don’t try to talk about the win streak too much. We treat every game with a fresh slate and go at it period by period. Our main focus right now is to have much better starts instead of coming out of the gates slow and finishing strong.”

Following back-to-back eight-goal outbursts on home ice, Saturday’s game against the Hounds was a

much tighter affair.

Captain Kendall Fransoo was the difference maker for the North Stars, as he tied the game up in the second period with a power play goal and moved the home side out front for good midway through the final frame.

“Just when you thought you’ve seen everything from him, he goes out and steps things up,” Bedford said.

“He finds a way to elevate his game at the most important times and he did with two seeing-eye shots.”

Joel Grzybowski continued his stellar rookie season for the North Stars in goal, as he made 21 saves to earn his seventh win of the year.

The Hounds got their lone goal from captain Craig Berube, while Jordan Greenfield-Flemon made 41 saves in a losing effort.

“We had our chances,” Hounds head coach Clint Mylymok said.

“We were up 1-0 with (Ben) Duperreault on a breakaway, but their goalie made a great save. We didn’t do anything on the power play as well, and I think that really would have frustrated them if we were able to get up by a pair of goals at that point.”

Friday’s dominant performance was highlighted by the first two SJHL goals for forward Jayden Nachtegaele and defenceman Conor Jensen.

Holinaty had two goals and an assist in Friday’s victory while Connor Logan scored a goal and dished out two helpers.

“We’ve been playing strong on defence and that allows us to have good opportunities on offence,” Nachtegaele said. “When you’re generating nearly 50 shots on goal, it’s hard for a goaltender to stop that many shots.”

Cole Keenleyside and Regan Seiferling scored for the Terriers, who gave up eight goals a night later in an 8-0 setback to the Kindersley Klippers.

“We’re not going to make any excuses, we weren’t very good tonight,” Terriers head coach Casey O’Brien said.

“We made mistakes out there and I think the North Stars came in with a chip on their shoulder after we beat them in our home rink about a month ago.”

The North Stars, who sit in second place in the Finning Division with a 14-50-0 record, will be back in action Friday as they will pay a visit to the La Ronge Ice Wolves.

They will return to the Civic Centre a night later for a massive contest with the Broncos, who are ahead of the North Stars in the Finning Division.

After going to penalty kicks in their league and regional finals, the two sides seemed destined for another shootout at Centennial Field Saturday in the 1A provincial final.

That all changed late in the second half as Grade 10 student Taylor Zwarych found the back of the net to give the Mohawks a 2-1 triumph and their first-ever provincial crown.

“I really wasn’t sure if it was going to go in,” Zwarych said. “It was kind

of a lucky shot as they have a really good goalie who makes a lot of great saves.

“It’s really awesome to come away with the provincial title. We’ve been close with Muenster all year and it was great to play them for a chance to win gold.”

Saturday’s final marked a return to the provincial final for the Mohawks, who lost a 2-0 affair to Lake Lenore last year.

“The girls that came back to the team had a better idea of what to expect this time around,” Mohawks head coach Teri Tarrant said. “I feel like this was the best performance our team has had all year long, as they were clicking as soon as we got

So what have we learned so far from the first month or so of the 2016-17 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League season?

Well for starters, trying to predict the results of the games on any given night is just as foolish as predicting the weather.

Heading into Tuesday night, the race for first place in the 12-team league is a very close one.

The Estevan Bruins and the Humboldt Broncos both have 29 points, while the Battlefords North Stars sit just one point behind them.

While the always-debatable Canadian Junior Hockey League Top 20 have the Bruins as the best team of the lot with a 10th place ranking at the moment (the Broncos are in 18th and the North Stars have received an honourable mention), I don’t think it’s that clear cut for who leads the pack.

Now naturally, I see the North Stars on a regular basis so I’m biased in that regard when compared to the other two sides.

Sharks lose thriller to Hounds

Saturday’s game was much closer than the final score would indicate, as the Sharks out-shot the Hounds 42-31.

The difference in the

contest came during a second period power play for the home team, as the Hounds scored two shorthanded goals in a 10-second span.

“That really set us back,” Berggren said. “I felt like we outplayed them and we got a lot of shots on goal, we just had trouble putting the puck in the net.

“I thought we had a really strong third period but when you give up two short-handed goals, it’s really tough to come back.”

Jessie Herner and Kulbida scored for the Sharks in the loss, while Chloe Burt made 25 saves.

Tana Terry led the way for the Hounds with a pair of goals and Kaitlyn Ross turned aside 40 shots to earn the win.

The Sharks, who have a 0-4-0-1 record, will return to the Battleford Arena this weekend, when they’ll host the Regina Rebels for a pair of games.

“They have a really good top line that generates a lot of offence, so we’ll have to key in on them,,” Berggren said.

“They are another fast team so we’ll need to be physical once again in order to slow them down.”

The two sides will meet for at 7:30 p.m. Saturday before taking to the ice at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

The Battlefords Sharks are still in search of their first win of the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League season.

But if their play at the Battleford Arena on Sunday afternoon is any indication, the elusive taste of victory is just around the corner.

After a tough 6-2 setback a night earlier, the Sharks were in a spirited battle in a rematch with the Notre Dame Hounds, but came up just short by a score of 3-2 in a shootout.

“It was a good game from start to finish and we had our chances for sure,” Sharks head coach Gary Berggren said.

“We’re having trouble around the net at the moment when it comes to finishing on our chances, but we’re seeing progress in that part of our game.”

The Sharks, who outshot the Hounds 54-39 over the course of 70 minutes, held a 2-1 lead going into the third period thanks to power play goals from Ali Aitken and Jordan Kulbida.

The Sharks had a gorgeous chance in the third round of the shootout to win the game, but Jaici Wiegers’ shot ended up ringing off of the goal post.

Kendra Zuchotzki made a nice move on the very

next attempt to give the Hounds their third straight victory.

“I feel like we are right there, especially when it comes to our goal scoring,” Berggren said.

“If you look at our power play, we were able to score two goals on Sunday, and that’s something

we weren’t able to do in the last few games. That’s something we’ve been working on improving here over the last week, and although it is improving, you can’t work on everything so there’s more we can improve on.”

Lashburn School being one of them. She returned to the Richard area and married Joseph Wawryk on November 27, 1968. This couple farmed and lived on Joe’s parents yard & farm for the rest of their lives. They also farmed some of the Steve and Dennis Bouskill land. They both had a strong passion for farming. Donalda suffered major health issues in 2005 and could no longer live on her own. She became a resident of the Oasis Personal Care Home at Speers in February of 2006. She remained there until September 2011 when she became a resident of Hafford Special Care Centre. Donalda always loved the outdoors. Farming, gardening, yard work or even long walks in the winter – just to be outside. Nothing ever went to waste from her garden. She always found a use and a place for it. She also enjoyed sewing. Another passion of Donalda’s was keeping track of the weather, she could tell you for years what the weather was on a specific day. She enjoyed animals, especially their dog. Donalda was always very grateful for the care she received and very seldom complained about anything. LIFE as I know it

I have regrets. There was another family who does not even exist within my childhood memories, more second cousins I didn’t even know by name.

Even as I write this, I had to backtrack to figure out there was the same degree of separation between us.

But without that one small childhood memory to use as a catalyst to a conversation, I barely realized who they were and I had no idea what to say.

It is hard to start that conversation. OK now, who are you and who am I to you? And once we figure that out, where will our conversation go? My only regret is the conversations I didn’t have.

Suddenly I was in the shoes of the “missing generation”. The generation of second cousins without the childhood memory to launch them into a conversation with someone they not only don’t know, but have no memories to connect and unite them, let alone reunite.

My own children would have been at a gathering of cousinhood with all the “once removed” and “second” and “third” descriptors. I fully understand their hesitation over coming. You kind of “need” your base family group of people you know well to launch you into new and unknown territory.

Reuniting is an up close

and personal set of stories.

Uniting is something (I think) we all have a little more trouble with. There were oh so many up close and personal conversations that weekend. I love rehearing the words as they waft into my consciousness as I remember those days.

Reuniting is fun and easy. Uniting is akin to starting a new job where you walk in and everyone and everything is a stranger to you. Reuniting is like stepping into an old job you know well and running with it. Uniting is learning the ropes, but discovering the connections of what you already know and how it applies to all you are learning. It was a wonderful reunion. The new unions? I didn’t do so well in that area. It is hard to get to know brand new people in a large setting.

It is so busy, so overwhelming and there are so many people to feel like you don’t have the focus required to get to know the one person in front of you when there are about 90 others in your midst.

The sun that set upon our day of great connections and reconnections was a piece of art. It was as if all those who were not with us here on Earth said “good night” with the only language they had. It was a breathtaking sunset on a day that took my breath away.

Rotary district governor working to attract youth

The need to keep building the membership of Rotary was highlighted by the district governor in her visit to the Battlefords last Monday.

Laura Morie, Rotary district governor for District 5370, which includes the Battlefords, spoke at their regular meeting Monday at Northland Power Curling Centre.

Afterwards Morie was scheduled to tour the com-

munity to see the positive impact Rotary initiatives have on the area.

Morie, who is from the Westlock area, spoke of the work Rotary does around the world, and the growth of Rotary clubs in India and through Asia.

She noted India used to be one of the largest beneficiaries of their international grants and now are the fourth-largest contributor.

She spoke of the progress made towards polio eradication and expressed

confidence the disease would be defeated.

“It will be only the second disease in history to have ever been wiped out.”

Morie also looked to the future and the importance of attracting the young generation to Rotary, pointing to the growth of

Interact and Rotaract clubs in the district.

“Now it’s time to bring the kids along,” Morie said.

“We need to help these young people weave a path, not just to Rotarian membership but to meaningful service and work in our community.”

Putting it off until tomorrow may be trouble We have a long word for it: procrastination.

Crastinus is the Latin word for tomorrow, so pro crastinus means for tomorrow. Don’t bother with it today, tomorrow is soon enough. But of course, as the saying goes, tomorrow never comes.

Once we pass midnight, it becomes today, and “tomorrow” is pushed on yet another day.

Why is it we put off some things until a later time? Having a doctor check out that pain, or finding out what’s causing that odd sound in the car motor – we have lots of ways we rationalize doing nothing. We tell ourselves: maybe it’s not that serious; there’s likely no real danger; I can handle it on my own; I have more important things to do; I’m afraid of what it will cost me; maybe it will go away by itself.

Years ago, at the beginning of a holiday weekend, there was a long line at a gas station, as people filled up their cars for a trip. An attendant spotted the local minister’s car, back in the line, and went to him. “Sorry about the delay,” he said.

“It seems as if everyone waits until the last minute to get ready for the trip they’ve planned.” The pastor smiled and said, “I know what you mean. I

have the same problem in my business.”

That speaks to spiritual procrastination, a failure to deal with things as the Lord is prompting us to do. Revelation pictures Christ standing at the door seeking entrance.

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine [fellowship] with him, and he with Me.” (Rev. 3:20) While, in the context, the appeal is made to a worldly church, the imagery could also represent in invitation to individuals.

“To as many as did receive and welcome Him, He gave the authority (power, privilege, right) to become the children of God, that is, to those who believe in (adhere to, trust in, and rely on) His name.” (Jn. 1:12, Amplified Bible) Welcoming Christ into our lives, by faith in Him, presupposes we realize our great spiritual need, and see Him as the only answer. As the Lord Jesus Himself put it, “No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (Jn. 14:6) Many of the excuses sinners make for rejecting the Saviour are the same ones we use for procrastinating about other things. “Maybe there’s no real danger to

my soul.” Or, “I think I can get to heaven on my own.” Or, “I’m afraid of all I’d have to give up if I become a Christian.”

But none of the feared sacrifices weighs a feather in contrast to an endless

eternity.

The Roman governor, Felix, wanted to wait for “a convenient time” to listen to Paul’s gospel message (Acts 24:25). But neither biblical nor secular history reveals that he

ever found an occasion more convenient to him.

Where’s your heart home?

Ever heard the expression, “Home is where the heart is?” Let me rephrase that question. “Who hasn’t?”

It was a present in the form of a gift card from one of our granddaughters that got me thinking about the expression. As I struggled to find a topic for today’s article I decided to head to Tim Hortons.

There, while standing in line at the order counter of this iconic Canadian quick-service restaurant, I couldn’t help but

notice a poster that read, “Home is where Tim’s is.” Hmm, I mused, now that sounds like something to chew on, or more accurately, to sip on. After enjoying my medium steeped tea (with three milk, please) I headed home to do some Internet searching.

I found it interesting to discover that the first attributed use of the term “home is where the heart is” was traced back to Pliny the Elder (A.D. 2379). Many centuries later its first recorded use in North America was said to be in the United States in 1870. J.J. McCloskey, in a volume of plays titled Davey Crockett and Other Plays wrote, “Well, home, they say, is where the heart is.”

Looking back over my life I realized I’ve left my heart in a couple of places, including

sacred music, he has given us Where He Leads Me I Must Follow, There Is a Quiet Place and other songs.

The present selection says: “The Saviour is waiting to enter your heart– / Why don’t you let Him come in? / There’s nothing in this world to keep you apart– / What is your answer to Him? / Time after time He has waited before, / And now He is waiting again / To see if you’re willing to open the door– / O how He wants to come in.” the prairie towns of Saskatchewan. Yes it’s cold out there and yes, farming is big and mechanized, but I learned to love the culture and the people.

Above all else, though, my heart is centred in the hope and peace that come from a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Am I perfect? Far from it! I have no greater desire, though, than to please Christ on Earth and to live with Him for eternity. Even more amazing is that He longs to live in me.

Try-a-Trade Expo gives a hands-on experience

High school students and other job searchers had the opportunity to try their hand at scaffolding, surveying and more at North West College’s Trya-Trade Interactive Career Expo at NationsWEST Field House Wednesday, Oct. 26.

Jennifer Whyte, coordinator of Try-a-Trade, said she was pleased with the feedback she’d received so far that students were eager to learn more about a particular trade through hands-on interactive activities at each booth.

Attending the expo was Shaelynn Kahpeaysewat, a high school student at Atoskewin Success Centre, who said she had already visited the booth demonstrating hairstyling.

As for any other trades that caught her eye, Kahpeaysewat said she was interested in nursing and wanted to look into paramedics training as a possible entryway into the medical field.

For Kahpeaysewat, a key factor in her career decision will be future financial stability.

“Cosmetics is something that I wanted to take for a long time, but it’s kind of falling back now because, for me, it’s not something I could make good money out of,” said Kahpeaysewat.

She added that she was still interested in learning the skill “on the side,” in addition to another trade or post-secondary education.

Kahpearsewat came to the expo, she said, to see what options are available to her and, with 46 booths registered by trades and sub-trades, she was sure to find a few options she’d never considered beforehand.

Whyte said there was anywhere from 1,300 to 1,500 people expected to attend the expo. A majority of the registrants were from high schools in the area, but the expo was open to anyone interested in learning a trade.
