Tree farm spruce burn Staff Another large grass fire, this one in the RM of North Battleford, brought out a full response from North Battleford Fire Department.

The blaze happened northwest of the 19th Tee location Thursday at around 3:52 p.m.

According to the fire department, a large portion of spruce trees at a tree farm that the landowner owned was consumed, along with numerous round bales, a large portion of grass and an open stubble field.

Five apparatus and 13 personnel were on hand for two hours and 40 minutes to put out the blaze.

Firefighters were also called to a dumpster fire Saturday at about 10:40 p.m. The blaze was set at 11204 - Railway Ave. Three personnel were on the scene for about 15 minutes.

Fun Finale

The Community Youth Choir wound up its season Sunday with an imaginative concert and colourful costumes. Logie Hall at Third Avenue United Church was filled with the sounds of children’s voices as family and friends applauded their performance. The Community Youth Choir is a non-audition choir founded by Lisa Hornung, whose goal is to make music available to all children.

Mental Health Awareness Week

The Canadian Mental Health Association held their flag-raising at City Hall Monday morning to launch a week of activities in the city as part of Mental Health Awareness Week. A number of events are planned for the week including the annual Talent Show at Saskatchewan Hospital on Wednesday and the Walk for Awareness on Thursday in North Battleford. Funding situation still an issue for The Lighthouse

It remained an uncertain funding situation for The Lighthouse Serving the Battlefords as of the last week of April.

There had been various discussions behind the scenes over the last number of weeks to try to find a more permanent resolution to the ongoing funding woes of the organization, which has been struggling through a funding shortfall that hit last December.

Chiefs CDC had kept the doors open through the end of March. More funds raised from the Lighthouse’s Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser as well as a matching $25,000 from the City of North Battleford have kept it operating since then.

But the future was still in flux as noted in the monthly monitoring report to city council April 25 by Community Safety Co-ordinator Herb Sutton. His report noted sustainable funding was still an issue.

“At time of writing, The Lighthouse cannot confirm that it has sustainable fund-

ing to continue to operate,” Sutton’s report stated.

Still, The Lighthouse has not thrown in the towel on efforts to seek any funds that might be available.

At the Battlefords Chamber of Commerce monthly board meeting April 19, Executive Director Linda Machniak reported she had received email correspondence from Caitlin Glencross, manager of the North Battleford Lighthouse, requesting the Chamber’s support.

Machniak later had a meeting with Glencross.

The concerns expressed

were about “money, money and money,” Machniak told directors.

What Glencross requested was assistance from the Chamber to “advocate on their behalf,” said Machniak. There do appear to be some funding opportunities available, particularly at the federal level.

Machniak seemed willing to offer the chamber’s help, such as letters of support that might be required for funding applications.

But Machniak also noted there was still a lot of work ahead.

Bylaw passes; others to come back Staff

One bylaw passed and was signed and sealed April 25 at North Battleford council, but three others will need to come back for third reading later on.

The bylaw that passed Monday was the one amending M1 Light Industrial District Development standards, with the minimum site area

changed from 1,100 square metres to 550 square metres for construction trades, convenience stores, parking lots, restaurants without associated lounges, restaurants with associated lounges, storage garages, veterinary clinics, warehouses and welding and machine shops.

Also changed was the designation from “permitted use” to “discretionary use”

for construction trades and welding and machine shops.

The bylaw was advertised, and a public hearing was held at the beginning of council with no opposition expressed. Second and third reading carried unanimously at council at the end of the night.

Three other bylaws made it through second reading, but got no further for the time being. The bylaw to

establish mill rate factors, a bylaw to authorize levying of the tax rate and to establish minimum and base taxes and the bylaw authorizing the levying of a base tax for the funding of the Underground Parks and Roads program did not receive unanimous consent for third reading, so those three bylaws will have to come back to council for third reading and final passage.

Commentary

Canadian cattle industry faces a growing crisis

By Sylvain Charlebois The Earls restaurant decision to turn to a U.S. supplier for humanely-produced beef points to a significant problem for the future of the cattle industry in Canada.

The Earls decision follows a similar one by A&W a few years ago. That chain had to procure beef from Montana and Australia for its “no hormones, no steroids” campaign.

Both decisions point to shortcomings in the Canadian beef industry.

And given the deepening problems in the Alberta economy, ranchers have reason to be particularly unhappy with the Earls decision because any loss of income is cause for concern.

But the industry problems exposed by these decisions are hardly singular. A number of issues face the cattle industry in Canada.

The cattle industry has been slow to recognize and respond to how fragmented the marketplace has become in recent years. Market scale, though, has always been an issue in Canada. The U.S. market is immense, which makes niche markets more practical and gives them the look of a gold mine. In Canada, the business case for conversion to niche markets was weak for years, since the quantities sold did not warrant any changes.

While the Canadian cattle industry has not been idle, changes have been exceptionally slow in coming. The industry has been working with the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef to establish standards for how beef is produced, which, of course, includes humane standards.

However, reports suggest that the project has faced challenges in recent months. Consensus building on what sustainable beef actually means has apparently been difficult to reach.

Nonetheless, the market is shifting rapidly and the Canadian industry is having difficulty coping.

For years, many ranchers felt that working to certain animal welfare standards simply did not bring the necessary payback. But with higher food prices, a greater number of consumers are more willing than ever to consider alternatives.

When food is cheap, choices can be more trivial for a

significant group of consumers, but higher grocery bills compel consumers to look more closely at what they purchase, seeking benefits and understanding the origins of food. And that forces supply chains to become much more transparent.

As a result, animal welfare has more market currency.

Just a few years ago, Earls likely could not have cared less where their beef came from and how it was produced.

Not now. And other restaurant chains already have open procurement strategies, which are very much imbedded in their approach to corporate social responsibility.

But for a growing number of consumers, none of this matters. For them, humane or sustainable beef is a fairy tale - it doesn’t exist. They feel that livestock production for human consumption is simply no longer acceptable.

That perspective has been enhanced by social media, which has brought greater attention to consumer concerns about animal welfare.

And raising cattle puts significant pressure on our environment. That has clearly created discomfort among some consumers.

Unlike the chicken or pork industries, for which production cycles are not as resource intensive, beef is going through an identity crisis in the western world. Cattle require more than 10 pounds of feed and eight gallons of fresh water to produce one pound of edible beef. These numbers are beginning to influence how consumers per-

ceive beef as a commodity.

And this is only the beginning. An increasingly number of restaurant chains that rely on beef sales will commit to becoming more open about how animals are treated on farms. Using animal welfare as a retail tool can no longer be overlooked. It just wouldn’t be good business practice.

The changing profile of consumers contributes to all of this. Millennials now outnumber boomers, and they have far more diverse desires and habits.

And higher food prices are a major game-changer for the western world. Charging more for calories brings a different set of expectations.

The marketplace is now more attuned with food systems. What was once taken for granted is now an issue of focus for consumers: quality, composition and origin matter.

Certainly, modern consumers may still be a little confused about food systems. But consumers are clearly more engaged, and that means the industry must respond.

So the next time a restaurant seeks to cater to a growing consumer need, the Canadian cattle industry needs to be much better prepared.

Commissionaires medal for Hickson Staff Ray Hickson has received yet another prestigious and distinguished honour.

Hickson’s work as a North Battleford commissionaire has been honoured by the corps with a Distinguished Service Medal.

According to their news release, it’s a national award to recognize service that brings credit to the federation warranting formal recognition at the national level but does not involve an element of bravery or personal risk by the recipient.

Hickson has been with the Commissionaires Saskatchewan since 1998, and from 2003 to 2015 was the North Battleford branch manager.

He was credited with tireless promotion of the commissionaire brand and excellent customer service, and respected by staff for leading by example.

RCMP announces winners of Name the Puppy Contest Battleford entry of ‘Jett’ earns prizes Staff INNISFAIL, Alta. – Thirteen puppies born at the RCMP Police Dog Service Training Centre now have names, thanks to boys and girls representing every province and territory in Canada.

The PDSTC received almost 16,000 entries to this year’s Name the Puppy contest.

One of the entries chosen was Jett submitted by Lucas Anthony of Battleford.

“The training centre staff had a great time sorting through all the entries,” said Insp. Akrum Ghadban, the officer in charge of the Police Dog Service Training Centre.

“Congratulations to the 13 winners and I look forward to hearing about the success of these newest RCMP recruits.”

All names had to start

with the letter J. For multiple entries of the same name, winners were selected at random.

The 13 winners will each receive a certificate, a laminated photo of the puppy they named, a plush German shepherd toy dog named Justice and an RCMP cap.

If only for an hour ... ‘Trust in your heart’ “If you could sit on this bench and chat for an hour with anyone from your past or present, who would it be?”

That was the question posted on my Facebook feed one morning. I read the words and exhaled one simple word “Dad.” Then I wondered how that conversation might go. One hour goes by fast when you are speaking about matters of the heart.

I wouldn’t want to waste a breath. What could one say to someone you haven’t had a conversation with in 33 years?

Me: I think about you a lot, Dad. Dad: I know.

Me: I have felt your presence with me at times. Were you really there?

Dad: More than you will ever know.

Me: I’m sorry.

Dad: Why? Me: I wasn’t “enough” to you after you were hospitalized. I should have done more, said more, tried more, believed more.

Dad: I knew what was in your heart. That was all that mattered.

Me: I became more concerned about Mom. Dad: That is what I wanted.

Me: What was it like? To be trapped in a body that did not work?

Dad: We only have an

hour. Let’s talk about living, not dying.

Me: I moved back “home,” Dad! Right after you died. I needed to move away. And I wanted to be closer to “you,” to our roots.

Dad: I was there.

Me: I wanted to get to know your brothers and I am doing it, Dad! I am!

They are incredible and wise and kind. Oh, so kind.

Dad, they talk about you with such admiration.

Dad: I wish they could hear what I think about them. I wish they knew how I felt.

Me: They see it in the pictures of you. They remember how you treated them when they were younger and how that really never changed. They hold you in such high esteem because of your actions. You were a role model to them, Dad. Dad: See what I mean about knowing what is in another person’s heart?

Believe it when you feel it.

It is real.

Me: You are missed, you know. I wish you could walk at your son’s side to guide and encourage him. He is a great man, you know.

Dad: Yes, I know.

Me: He is so much like you, Dad. Too much in some ways.

Dad: Let him learn from my mistakes. Family first, work second.

LIFE as I know it

By Colleen Crawford Me: We know that in our heads and by some miracle I have been able to take that lesson and make it work for me. Why is it so much harder when you are a man?

Dad: We only have an hour.

Me: What can I tell him?

Can you find him and give him an hour of your time?

I need to tell him what you want to say, but he needs to hear it from you.

Dad: We never know why we are given what we are given. We have this time. Let’s make the most of it. I want you to know I believe in you. I believe in all of you. I always have.

Silence. Just silence, as I look into his eyes and there is no need to memorize them because I already have.

Dad: If I could do things over again I would want to do them differently, but chances are that I would end up doing it all exactly the way I did it the first time, you know. I was following

the path I thought I was destined to live.

Me: Mom thought there was a better path.

Dad: There is always a “better” path, when you are not on it. When you are on it, you see the obstacles and sacrifices then suddenly the path you abandoned looks better.

Me: I know exactly what you mean.

Dad: Mom believed in me more than I believed in myself you know. I was doing the best I could do, but we get stuck on a path because we know it so well.

It is only in looking back that we see there could have been a better way. It was important your sisters were well established in their own lives before we made any big moves or changes.

Everything would have changed if I had done one thing differently. Everything.

I sit quietly and know what he says is the truth.

Dad: What is, is good.

It is so very good. You may not have been born if it had been any other way. Nor so many of the grandchildren.

Everyone is making a difference. Everyone. You all need to know and remember that. Even when it doesn’t feel like it is, every little thing is important. It all matters. Remember the time I came out and talked with you when you were sitting in the trailer? Little at the time. Not so little now.

Me: I remember it well A wordless conversation transpires and so very much is said without a word being uttered.

Me: Our family has grown so much since you were here. So much has changed. Yet much has stayed the same.

Dad stares off into the scenery as if he sees and knows exactly what I am saying and so much more.

Me: Mom found the baseball cap your grandson gave to you and gifted it back to him along with the memories he wrote about on that day.

Dad: I’m glad (he tears up and his words get caught up in his throat. Then he manages to sputter out the words) ... these are happy tears.

Me: Your grandson felt exactly the same way.

Dad: I know. I know.

Silence as we both gaze into the skies above and

think of all we know without knowing.

Dad: I have to go now.

Me: Can you go see the others? They need to hear this. They need to see you.

They need to feel you!

Dad: I cannot make any promises. Tell them to trust in their hearts. Let them know I am there. I always have been. I always will be.

Tears fall down my cheeks my shoulders throb with the ache of wanting to sob aloud.

Dad: Family first. Don’t forget. Work second.

I open my eyes and I was back home in my world. A world where family is (almost always) first, a world where I (try to) believe in my heart and I am grounded, oh-so-grounded, knowing the decision I made on that fateful day in December, 1987 (when Dad lost his battle here on this Earth), I was being guided to find this very spot of paradise.

Right here on earth.

He is gone but he is here in so very many ways, always in my heart. “You are forever in my heart, Dad. I hold my memories dear and create conversations where I try to believe I hear what you are telling me” “Trust in your heart. I am there. I always have been. I always will be.” His words echo in my mind like he was sitting right beside me, if only for an hour.

Baxter Katner Second round NHL Stanley Cup playoff predictions commits to Stevens Point Lace ‘em hockey team Eastern Conference

Another alumni of the Battlefords North Stars will be continuing his hockey career in the NCAA. Baxter Kanter, the six foot three inch power forward who was a valuable member of the North Stars over two seasons, has committed to join the men’s hockey team at the University of Wisconsin’s Stevens Point known as the Pointers.

The announcement was made by the North Stars this past week.

Stevens Point, Wis. should be a good fit for Kanter, who hails from Lincoln, Neb. just a couple of states away.

The Pointers play in the Division III Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. They are coming off a championship season having won the NCAA Division III National Championship over the St. Norbert Green Knights in Lake Placid, N.Y. In 125 games with the North Stars, Kanter scored eight goals and notched 26 assists for 34 points. He accumulated 359 penalty minutes.

He earned Most Improved Player honours in 2014-15 season, and was named the team’s playoff MVP for 2016.

The North Stars have had success moving a number of their players on to opportunities in the

Baxter Kanter NCAA recently. They are congratulating Kanter on landing at Stevens Point and are wishing him well as he moves on to college hockey in the United States.

“Baxter was a presence for the North Stars in many ways,” said North Stars head coach and general manager Kevin Hasselberg in a news release.

“His physical effort and relentless pursuit of the puck created time and space for his teammates.

Baxter was a presence away from the rink with his honest and humble demeanor consistently making time for fans, volunteers and supporters of the team. He was a pleasure to coach and will be a significant player with Stevens Point for the next four seasons.”

Washington Capitals vs Pittsburgh Penguins Here we are again, the great Alexander Ovechkin faces off against Canada’s Sidney Crosby. Last time these two clashed it was 2009, where Ovechkin tallied 14 points (eight goals and six assists) while Crosby had eight goals and five assists in the seven-game series. Ultimately, this series may come down to who can stop and contain these leaders. Capitals netminder Braden Holtby was one of the best netminders in the game this season, and has continued his strong play in the playoffs, leading the NHL with a .968 playoff save percentage. He is also one win away from Washington’s all-time post-season wins record. I will give the Capitals the slight advantage in this one, even though the Penguins currently lead the charge in goals per game and power play conversions.

Capitals in six.

New York Islanders vs Tampa Bay Lightning The Islanders were able to squeak out a come-frombehind game six victory against the Florida Panthers before moving on to play Tampa in round two. John Tavares played the role of hero, scoring the game tying goal and the eventual double overtime winner. He will have to step up in a huge way if New York has a shot at taking down the Lightning.

The forward currently leads the playoffs in goals, but the Lightning offence has received a dose of rest after dealing with the Detroit Red Wings in five games.

Without Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Drouin has done a great job of filling in for the goal scorer. With Ben Bishop backstopping Tampa, I have a hard time seeing them falling in this one.

Stanley Cup Champion this year as St. Louis was able to knock off the Chicago Blackhawks and San Jose dealt with the Los Angeles Kings. This should be another great series to watch, with some of the great offensive players in the game taking to the ice. The Blues were able to handle Dallas during the regular season, winning four of five games against them, allowing only 10 goals during that span.

They were also able to shut down Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa for

the most part in the opening round. Now they get to deal with Jamie Benn and Jason Spezza. While both teams have given up the most goals out of each club still represented in the playoffs, I have to believe the welloiled machine of the Blues, and their depth scoring, can get the job done.

San Jose Sharks vs Nashville Predators The Sharks bested the Kings in six games, slaying their rivals the Los Angeles Kings. They now have a best of seven series against

the Nashville Predators. The Preds were able to walk into the Honda Center and steal game seven away from the Anaheim Ducks, who threw everything and the kitchen sink at them. Goaltender Pekka Rinne was absolutely fantastic, and will have to be an influential part of the team in order to get past this San Jose team, destined to make one of the deeper playoff runs in recent franchise history. Over the course of the regular season it was Nashville who bested the Sharks in two of their three games, but the playoffs are an entirely different monster. San Jose is a different team this year, mentally.

Brent Burns has played out of his mind, now second in the playoffs for scoring with 10 points.

I see them taking this in five games and moving onto the Western conference finals.

Co-chairs named, more volunteers are needed

The co-chairs have been announced and a number of volunteers are now in place for the 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games coming to North Battleford.

The appointments were made in a resolution passed April 25 at city council. They are: North Battleford Host Committee Co-chair Rob Rongve, Special Advisor to the Committee Doug Silvester, Athlete Services Co-chair Bruce Friesen, Food Services Co-chair Rhea Good, Security Co-chair Insp. John Sutherland, Marketing and Promotion Co-chairs Ryan Bater and Nathaniel Puffalt.

As well, the following have volunteered to work at specific locations at the games: Diana Griffiths, Audrey Trach, Glenn Rubidge, Colleen Sabraw, Kelly Villeneuve, Philip McGee, Abdul Basit Siddiawi, Kim

Frolek, Cheryl Stewart-Rahm and Karen Highton.

It should be noted Mayor Ian Hamilton will be sitting on the committee in an ex officio capacity and City Manager Jim Puffalt and Director of Leisure Services Bill Samborski are the city representatives.

This is the initial group of appointments.

“We’re going to need a lot more people,” said Puffalt.

“So this is the initial start of the people that volunteered. In essence we accepted everybody that volunteered because we’re going to need lots and lots.”

The plan is to meet with the initial group of co-chairs over the next couple of weeks, and continue efforts towards getting more volunteers.

Puffalt estimated another 15 more co-chairs are needed as well as more volunteers for the various events.

AAA Stars shopping for new coaches

Jody Reiter and Martin Smith have stepped down from their coaching duties with the Battlefords AAA Stars.

There will be some big shoes to fill, as Reiter and Smith led the Stars to backto-back league final appearances in 2014 and 2015.

This year, the Stars were able to hold on to the eighth and final playoff spot. Their post Christmas surge led them to the post-season, where the Stars were eventually swept by the first place Regina Pat Canadians.

It was a giant turnaround season. Layne Young graduated from the black and white with a 31-goal season, and was named the rookie

of the year with the North Stars. Troy Gerein accompanied him, while Spencer Bast made the jump to the WHL. The Stars tweeted that

the organization was accepting applicants for the head coach position April 29. The team will look to fill in this role before looking for their new assistant coach.

Golf championship schedule set Staff The Golf Saskatchewan Championship schedule for 2016 has been announced and North Battleford is on the schedule.

North Battleford Golf and Country Club will host the 18th Saskatchewan Mixed Team event Aug. 27 and 28.

A strained relationship, laziness a positive force “Far from idleness being the root of all evil, it is rather the only true good.”

– Soren Kierkegaard, Danish philosopher and founder of existentialism It’s damn time we face this one unavoidable reality, and this may sting a little.

It’s good to be lazy. Truth be told, laziness is boredom’s tortured identical twin, the one forced to put up with the harsh appraisals, the one having to listen to the legions of excuses laid out by his unpretentious mother to explain away his brother’s same idle behaviour. Yes, their outward appearances remain uncannily similar, but there’s certainly no question that it’s their personalities – the way they’re perceived by popular culture – that set them apart.

Laziness implies a lack of motivation and dogged determination for the status quo, while boredom is more tolerated. Boredom is generally viewed as a leisurely break from worthwhile activity. One becomes bored, for example, once all productive work has been completed and there’s nothing else to do. Laziness, sadly, will forever remain a stigma, the ultimate behavioural end point, a label, a rep tough as nails to shake within certain circles.

Tragic, really, that this seared perception of laziness has drawn the short straw, time and time again.

But strip away the preconceived notions and the misguided attitude simmering out there, and what remains is this whimpering, feeble, naked little misconcep-

tion, itching at the chance to finally voice its opinion and justify its endurance as a force not only to be celebrated, but also promoted.

Yes, being lazy is good because it actually provides the premium fuel that churns the world’s economic engine. Consumers are viewed by advertisers as lazy, though you’ll never see the “L” word prominent on any billboard or brochure (that would be mud-onyour-face insulting, of course). But astute advertisers know full well their repressed target markets, as evidenced by the generally accepted notion of “making things easier” for their clients. Remote car door openers, for example, eliminate the labour intensive chore of manually turning a key.

Online shopping cancels the previously unbearable task of dragging out the raincoat and driving down to the local strip mall. And Richard Simmons parading around his hideous candystriped Dolfin shorts highstepping to Sweatin’ to the Oldies aside, the boob tube remains arguably science’s most widely hailed donation to passivity today.

Modern conveniences allow for all of this, and much more. Contemporary society is actually geared towards laziness. But in spite of it all, people moan and groan about their lack of free time. Nobody seems to have enough time in their day to sit back, relax and be lazy. But that’s okay because the manufacturing and marketing of such sedentary-promoting gadgets create jobs.

And who dreams up these contraptions, anyhow?

Why – big surprise here – it’s often the do-nothing crowd themselves, those who would rather vomit than, say, crawl to their TV sets, stick out a finger and press the ON/OFF button (much more on this in a later observation). So in this way, laziness opens the floodgates to productive creativity. Ironically, it is during this perpetual quest to remain lazy that productivity surfaces.

The geniuses behind the six-pack abs shirt hit the trifecta here, striking it rich and creating silk-screening jobs, all while selling an impressive optical illusion.

How many multi-platinum songs have been conceived by thumb-twiddling, garage-band musicians, banging their drums and strumming their guitars, arousing their geezer neighbours from their regularly scheduled naps?

In layman terms laziness is a precondition for boredom, which, in turn, earns its keep in terms of increased economic productivity and creativity.

Lazy people generally lack the necessary oomph to succeed. They tend to oversleep

on couches and floor rugs, watch excessive amounts of television, become masters at emitting various types of bodily blasts on command, or exhibit – through their actions or complete inactivity – behaviour consistent

with the shameful lazy label. At some point, though, motivation for action takes hold, compelling these once lazy people to take action, do something or somehow change their condition. Not immediately, mind you, but soon.

Hence, their previous state of do-nothing laziness becomes a precursor to accepted boredom.

Lazy people lack motivation while bored people don’t. The latter just don’t have anything to do. These people continue to oversleep, flip channels while plopped down on their aptly named La-Z-Boy reclin-

ers or cruise the hood, but they’re now officially bored – and thus free as a bird to conceive flashy music videos, contribute nouveau footprints and otherwise make the world a better place.

So, yes indeed, the ‘L’ word should be encouraged.

It should be promoted at the local level through PSAs and nationally via social media. The public deserves to be educated that this concept of laziness is (who would’ve thunk it?) indeed a valuable, unlearned skill, a fact that should be enough to quell any sibling rivalry.

Battleford Army Cadets win top honours John Cairns

There was a surprise in store for members of the Battleford Legion Army Cadet Corps No. 2537. The Cadets thought they were gathering at the Wildlife Federation building for a special event to celebrate Captain Marnell Weikle’s birthday.

But that was just a phony cover story used so they could all get together and be surprised by the good news that their cadet corps was named the top army cadet corps for Northern Saskatchewan.

To earn the honour they had to compete against cadet corps throughout the northern portion of the province including ones in cities such as Saskatoon.

There was a scoring system and a number of criteria considered, including participation marks for attending and hosting various events and competitions, and Cadet Corps No. 2537 finished in first place overall by one point.

Captain Doug Jordan, area cadet officer (army) Saskatoon, presented Captain Weikle, Commanding Officer of Battlefords Legion Army Cadet Corp No. 2537, with the certificate.

Afterwards, instead of a birthday cake, the cadets enjoyed a big celebration cake.

A selection of tough, long-lived perennials – great for your first perennial border

By Sara Williams I remember my first perennial border. I had bought two packets of seed in late winter. That spring I proudly planted about 30 feet of Shasta daisy and Bellis perrenis. The Shasta daisy thrived and soon had seeded itself in the lawn.

The Bellis perrenis did not survive.

Many perennials and 40-some years later, I’ve learned a little through trial and lots of error. If I were to do it all again, here is my selection – based on hardiness, longevity, good behavior and foliage as well as flowers. These perennials should get you off to a good start and then you can begin with your own trials and errors, knowing that the basics are in place. Don’t be afraid of the botanical or Latin names. They ensure you buy what you really want.

Monkshood (Aconitum spp.) is about three to four feet tall with attractive foliage and blue (or bicolour purple and white) flowers.

It seldom needs staking.

Plant in full sun to partial shade in evenly moist, organic soil.

Goatsbeard (Aruncus diocus) with panicles of creamy flowers (said to resemble the beard of a goat) does well in partial to full shade with evenly moist, organic soil. It reaches about three feet in height.

Canadian ginger (Asarum canadensis) is an excellent ground cover in a moist shady spot. About six inches tall, the attractive foliage is roundish and about two to three inches in diameter.

The flowers are usually hidden below the foliage – and not worth seeking out on bended knee. European ginger (Asarum europaeum) is similar, but with glossy

and 18 inches across. It produces golden yellow flowers for about four weeks in midspring and is excellent for rock gardens or the front of the border. Plant in full sun in well-drained soil Bergenia (Bergenia cordifolia) has to be one of the most long-lived and adaptable of all perennials.

Gertrude Jekyll, a famous British garden designer, included this among her “signature” plants. It does equally well in full sun to full shade, dry to moist soil, rock gardens to bog plantings. Only 12 inches tall, the leaves turn a reddishpurple in fall and pink flowers emerge in early spring. It makes an excellent ground cover but is not unduly aggressive.

is one of the best, if not the best, of the ornamental grasses suitable for the prairies. It grows four to five tall and forms a good-sized clump without being aggressive or invasive. Green in the summer, it turns a handsome beige in fall and waves gently in the wind and snow through the winter. Plant in full sun in average soil.

Bleeding heart (Dicentra spp.) (up to two by two feet depending on species) is an old-fashioned perennial with lovely foliage that graced the gardens of the Victorians and probably that of your grandparents. The flowers, in pink or white, were thought by the overly romantic Victorians to resemble a broken or bleeding heart of unrequited love. They do best in partial shade in organic soil with

plenty of moisture.

KYKKANEN: Eileen Elizabeth Kykkanen of St. Walburg passed away on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at the age of 93 years. Eileen Kykkanen passed away peacefully on April 9, 2016 at the St. Walburg Health Complex at the age of 93. She was born in Turtleford, on October 1, 1922 to Frank and Olive Mills. Eileen married Tom Kykkanen in 1944 and they were blessed with 9 children: Teddy, Betty (Terry) Burton, Robert, Ronald, Wayne (Lisa), Barry, Tommy, Annie, and Cindy (Steven) Nasby. Tom and Eileen started raising their family

by Moonlight Bay, Turtle Lake, and then moved into Livelong, in 1959. After Tom had passed away she moved to Mervin, with Paul (Nadon) who was the love of her life and best friend. They lived in Mervin for a few years until they purchased a new house and moved to St. Walburg where they lived until Paul’s passing in 2000.

The final move made the most sense since she was just down the street from the Bingo Hall. The early years were difficult as they were for most in her generation but money and material things never meant anything to her and she was satisfied with just the basics. She was an excellent cook and would always put together a meal when the kids stopped by for a visit. Her and Paul loved going for drives and their drives usually took them to a Bingo! Paul knew how much she loved the game and he would usually play the Nevada cards to pass the time. We would like to thank all the nurses and staff who cared for Eileen in her final years at the Lakeland Lodge in St. Walburg. The care and compassion she received will always be fondly remembered. Eileen was predeceased by her: parents, Frank & Olive; brothers, Gordon, Ronald (2015); husband, Tom (1970); loving companion, Paul (2000); sons, Ted (2014), Robert (1967), Ron (2004); grandson, Robert (1990). She is survived by her: children, Betty (Terry), Wayne (Lisa), Barry, Tommy, Annie and Cindy (Steven); and their families which include 15 grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren; brother, Frank (Jean), and numerous nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service for Eileen was conducted from the Marshall’s Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor John Sellwood officiating. BROWN: Rosina Kerr Brown passed away in Coquitlam BC on March 4th, 2016, at almost 104 years of age. Rose, as she was known to her many prairie friends, was born May 21st, 1912, at Qu’Appelle Valley, Saskatchewan. Her passion was education and, as an elementary school teacher in North Battleford, she taught and inspired hundreds of students from many generations over her more than 30-year teaching career at King Street and Bready Schools. Rose and her husband of over 60 years, Robert Victor Brown, lived together for many years in North Battleford and were active in their community. They are greatly missed by many friends and neighbors at the dance club, bridge club and Lakeview Meota Beach. Rose is lovingly remembered by her two sons, Robert William and Brian Victor; her grandchildren Robert, Patrick, Christopher, Ted and Doug; and her great grandchildren Brandon, Rachel, Aaron, Syndie Rose, Victoria, Abigail and Findley. Rose is now back “home” in North Battleford with her husband Victor, where she dearly wished to return. Rose was interred at North Battleford cemetery on April 12th, 2016. A celebration of her life for all friends and family will be announced at a later date.

Finding a spiritual treasure beyond imagining The mining industry is big business in Canada.

Some 380,000 people, working for 3,400 different companies add over $50 billion a year to our Gross National Product.

We are among the top five countries in the world producing such things as: potash, uranium, cobalt, aluminum, tungsten, platinum, sulphur, nickel and diamonds.

Mining is described in the Bible as well. Various clues place the events of the book of Job back around the time of the patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, who lived about 4,000 years ago.

In the book, Job describes miners, hanging perilously from ropes, as they seek the mineral riches of the earth. He says: “Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore. Man puts an end to darkness, and searches every recess for ore in the darkness and the shadow of death. He breaks open a shaft away from people; in places forgotten by feet they hang far away from men; they swing to and fro.” (Job 28:1-4) For enriching our spiritual lives, the Bible is a treasure greater than any precious mineral found in the earth. The psalmist says,

“The law of Your mouth is better to me than thousands of coins of gold and silver.”

(Ps. 119:72) “The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold.” (Ps. 19:9-10) Why is the Bible so precious? Whole volumes have been written on that subject. But here are a few things to consider.

It is a message from the infinite and eternal God. It certainly claims to be, thousands of times. And when it is examined with an open mind, and tested, it also proves to be.

Further, since He is “a God of truth” (Deut 32:4), His Word is unfailingly reliable. And it is enduring.

While the pronouncements of men are changeable and often untrustworthy, of God it is said, “Concerning Your testimonies, I have known of old that You have founded them forever.” (Ps. 119:152) When we are sick, we

need an expert opinion as to what’s wrong, and what can be done about it. It’s the same in the spiritual realm.

Since it is a true message from our Creator, we can be sure to find there an accurate diagnosis of our

need. The Bible says all are sinners (Rom. 3:23), and that sin brings death. (Rom. 6:23) Not only physical death, but eternal condemnation and separation from God, which Scripture calls “the second death.” (Rev. 21:8) But the Word of God also offers the effective prescription to meet our desperate need. God the Son came to this Earth, and took on our humanity, so that He could take our place under the wrath of God. Now, all who put their trust in Him can be cleansed and forgiven, and receive the

gift of eternal life. (Jn. 3:16; Eph. 1:7) Through Christ, we cannot only live meaningful and fulfilling lives, but look forward to the hope of heaven.

That means that, beyond all else, the Bible is a treasure precisely because it reveals the Lord Jesus Christ to us, our wonderful Saviour.

Whatever other riches we find in the pages of God’s Word, He Himself is, beyond imagining, the greatest Treasure of all.

Hymn writer Fanny Crosby thought so. In 1882 she published a song exalt-

ing the infinite spiritual riches found in and through Christ.

“O the unsearchable riches of Christ, / Wealth that can never be told! / Riches exhaustless of mercy and grace, / Precious, more precious than gold! / O the unsearchable riches of Christ! / Freely, how freely they flow, / Making the souls of the faithful and true / Happy wherever they go! / Oh, the unsearchable riches of Christ! / Who would not gladly endure / Trials, afflictions, and crosses on earth, / Riches like these to secure!”

My Jesus knows what I need There’s a beautiful chorus that goes like this: “My Jesus knows just what I need/ yes He knows just what I need/He satisfies and every need supplies/ Yes, He knows just what I need”.

This week I was reminded of that song while going through a difficult time. Repeating the words was more an act of the will than a celebration of the spirit. All efforts to ignore my feelings simply weren’t working. Is anyone else able to relate?

It was tempting that morning to skip my regular

devotions and head out to the track earlier than usual.

Walking those laps always seems to encourage me and besides, I argued to myself, maybe the Lord will give me a special promise at the same time I’m replacing fat with muscle. Fortunately I didn’t give in to that temptation.

Picking up my Bible I turned to the day’s passage. Though not convinced that I’d get much out of it, I petitioned the Lord in prayer, asking Him to speak to my heart and thanking Him for the strength He knew I needed. I began perusing the day’s scheduled reading.

Well, if I ever proved the reality of that lovely song, it was that morning. As I started reading Matthew 6, I mulled over Jesus’ warnings to His disciples that they weren’t to try imitating those who pretended to be His follow-

ers. They proclaimed their supposed religiosity by praying loudly in the streets in order to be noticed by people.

“You don’t need to do that,” Jesus told His disciples because “your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.” I stopped reading and my heart rejoiced as I genuinely and fervently declared: My Jesus knows just what I need! Before I do!

National Summer Safety Week May 1 - 7

Swim, don’t sink! Stay safe on the water this summer Submitted When the average person thinks of drowning-related deaths, their minds may immediately wander to islands or densely-populated landmasses surrounded by water on all sides. But drowning is a real problem in Canada, too — in 2014, there were at least 308 preventable waterrelated deaths in Canada according to the Lifesaving Society of Canada.

This National Summer Safety Week, May 1 – 7, the Canada Safety Council is reminding Canadians

from coast-to-coast to take special care around water, whether they are accomplished swimmers, frequent water users or parents to a young child who is getting familiar with their surroundings.

Water-related fatalities are especially tragic because they are entirely preventable. The vast majority of these deaths occur during recreational activities, including swimming, powerboating, fishing from a boat and walking near water or thin ice.

In fact, many Canadians

who drowned never had any intention of being in the water in the first place. If you have a pool, lake or other body of water near you, consider putting up fencing around the hazard to limit the danger.

The most important preventative measure you can take to keep yourself safe is to wear a personal floatation device. Canadian law requires that there be at least one PFD on a boat for every boater, which is a great start.

However, it’s not realistic to expect that you’ll be able to locate and put on your PFD

if adverse or unexpected conditions arise.

Get in the habit of wearing a PFD at all times while on a boat. It can quite literally make the difference between life and death. According to the Canada Drowning Report 2015, based on incidents where PFD information was available, four out of five water-related fatalities due to boating could have been mitigated if the victim were wearing a lifejacket.

Swim with a buddy. It’s always a good idea to ensure that you’re within earshot and sightline if you

get caught under a strong current, lose your bearings or get trapped under something.

Crucial as well in water safety is supervision, especially among young children. Parents, children are especially susceptible to drowning. A child can drown in just a few centimeters of water, meaning that everything from bathtubs to buckets can be potentially dangerous. Stay within arm’s length from your child at all times when they are in or near water.

Additionally, drowning

can happen in seconds and very quietly, so even something as simple as answering the door or taking a phone call can be a differencemaker. Take your child with you if you have to be away from the water.

There is also a lot of value in enrolling children for swimming lessons. Being a good swimmer isn’t enough in and of itself to keep an individual safe 100 per cent of the time, but being a weak swimmer or, worse, a non-swimmer, can be a severe detriment in getting to safety.
